Thermal pollution is the alteration of natural water temperatures from waste heat generated by industrial processes. Major sources include power plants and manufacturing cooling operations. Effects of thermal pollution include ecological imbalance by limiting biological processes, decreasing dissolved oxygen levels which can kill fish, and accelerating the greenhouse effect and global warming by adding hot water vapor to the atmosphere.
