Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. - 2. Lesson 9--Pronoun Problems We and Us with Nouns The pronouns we and us are sometimes followed by a noun that identifies the pronoun. (we students, us students) Use we when the noun is a subject or predicate noun. We volunteers like to help out. Use us when the noun is an object. Do you have work for us volunteers? How to choose... You can join (we, us) students tomorrow. 1. Drop the identifying noun from the sentence 2. Decide whether the pronoun is used as a subject or an object. 3. Use the correct pronoun with the noun. 2

Unclear Reference Be sure that each personal pronoun refers clearly to only one person, place, or thing. *if there is any chance your reader will be confused by whom or what you are talking about--use a noun instead. Confusing: Noah and Roger came to work the site, but he didn't stay. Clear: Noah and Roger came to work the site, but Noah didn't stay. 3
- 4. 1. (We, Us) students help out in lots of ways. 2. That garden was planted by (we, us) volunteers. 3. Carlos worked with Joe to clean the river, even though (he, Carlos) had never done that kind of work before. 4. Some of (we, us) athletes offered to coach youngsters. 5. Stacey always beats Teresa to work, but (she, Teresa) still gets there on time. 4
- 5. Lesson 10--More Pronoun Problems Using Pronouns in Compounds People often make mistakes when they use pronouns as parts of compound subjects and compound objects. Use the subject pronouns I, she, he, we, and they in a compound subject or compound predicate pronoun. Shawn and he are on the same team. Use the object pronouns me, her, him, us, and them in a compound object. Our friends saw Darlene and me at the library. *To choose the correct case of a pronoun in a compound subject or object, take out the other noun or pronoun. Shawn gave an article to Darlene and (I, me). 5
- 6. Phrases that Interfere Sometimes words and phrases come between a subject and a pronoun that refers to it. Don't be confused by the words in between. Darlene, like the others, is working on her report. (Her agrees with Darlene, not others.) Harriet Tubman, unlike many people, risked her life to free slaves. (Her agrees with Harriet Tubman, not people.) 6
- 7. 1. Our social studies teacher asked Danielle and (I, me) to do a report on Harriet Tubman. 2. The librarian helped (her, she) and me with the research, 3. Both (she, her) and I knew that Tubman hed slaves to freedom on the underground railroad. 4. Many facts about Tubman were to (she, her) and me. 5. More than 300 slaves, including Harriet's own sister, owed (her, their) freedom to Tubman. 6. (She, Her) and the runaways has to move secretly from one house to another along the Underground Railroad. 7. Tubman, like other conductors, wouldn't let any of (her, their) runaways turn back. 7
