meaning making. Has an imagery, rhymes,
sounds and rich in figurative language.
Elements of Poetry
 Persona – speaker in the poem.
 Theme – insights revealed by poem.
 Stanza
 Rhyme – sound at the end of the words.
End Rhyme
Internal Rhyme – eg. Jingle jungle in a poem.
 Rhythm – pattern of beats between the
stress and unstress syllables.

Types & Forms of Poetry
Lyric Poetry
 Sonnet – compose of 14 lines with formal
pattern of rhyme.
1. How do I love thee? Let me count the
ways.
2. I love thee to the depth and breadth and
height
3. My soul can reach, when feeling out of
sight
4. For the ends of being and ideal grace.
5. I love thee to the level of every day’s
6. Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
7. I love thee freely, as men strive for right;

praise.

10. In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s
faith.

 Elegy – the theme is death that expreses
mourning for the dead.
 Songs – poem that accompanied by
instrumental music.
 Psalms – a song praising God an Virgin
Mary, contains also philosophy of life.
Psalms 23:1-3 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack
nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green
pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he
refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right
paths for his name’s sake.
Narrative Poetry – contains the same elements of
short story.
 Epic – narrative poetry tells about
heroines including gods/goddesses.
Dramatic Poetry – focuses on Character rather
than narrative.

Annabel Lee

5 pattern of syllables.

PROSE- came from a Latin word “prosa” meaning
straightforward. An ordinary form of written
language.
Fiction – an imaginative event that base from
experience (added with invented
characters/events) or imagination of a fiction
writer,
 Folk tales
- Tales of Magic – A.k.a fairy tales, the
characters are came from upper class
of society.
- Romance – story of lovers who were
separated but because of magic, they
were reunited again.
- Realistic Tales – may happen in real
life, no magic is involved.
 Fables – the characters are animals who
behave like humans.
 Parable – stories are based from biblical
events.
 Legends – regarded as historical but not
verifiable.
 Myths- traditional story that unfold part
of the world view of a people.
 Short Story – brief work of fiction.
Non-Fiction – a story based on real facts.
 Biography – detail description of person’s
life..
 Autobiography – written account of the
life of a person written by that person.
 Diary – day to day personal record.
 Journal – day-to-day record but expected
to be read by other people.
 Essays – long piece of writing.
 Letters – a written message .
