The Inner City Of Los Angeles
Growing up in the inner city of Los Angeles taught me many things; make sure you re inside
before the street lights come on, never wear all red or blue, and make sure you get a good
education so that one day you can leave the inner city behind. I was fortunate enough to have
both a mother and a father who stressed the importance of excelling academically because
attending an inner city, LA county, public school did not instill a love of academics in myself or
my peers. Our teachers had checked out, the curriculum was not inspiring or relatable, and
everyday there was yet another fight happening during recess. As time went on I witnessed my
classmates and I take completely different paths. The strong support system I had at home
proved effective. As I went on to go to college, many of my peers dropped out, the dismal state
of our public school system had clearly failed them. During my undergraduate studies, the stories
of my old classmates did not leave my mind. I remained deeply intrigued with the struggles of
inner city people of color and the mobility they are granted. I began to volunteer at ArtStart, a non
profit program that taught previously incarcerated youth the art of poetry, and I was immediately
intrigued by the stories of what had led these children to a life of crime at such a young age. In
these students, I saw my childhood friends who had went down the same path many years before
and I wanted to know why; where did the disconnect between the school system

Spanish American Slavery
Spain and Britain treated the Native Americans like slaves and participated in the slave trade.
Nevertheless, the Spanish government prohibited Florida Indians to be slaves since it was the
law and it was practiced in other spanish colonies. The governors of Florida and its religious
leaders allowed the Hispanic colonists oppressed Indians to do labor for little or no wages.
Many Native Americans were badly treated, poorly fed, and died because of forced labor. St.
Augustine was mostly built by Indians with forced labor. There were slaves in Florida, but not
as many in England s Carolina colony where there were twice as many Africans as whites.
Spanish law treated slaves differently than English law. In the law of the English, a slave was
property that could be bought, sold, and punished possibly even to death, without any legal or
civil rights. English wives were treated as property of their husbands. Spanish law perceived
slaves as wretched people who still had legal rights, could sue their owners in court, and could
own property. Both men and women slaves could petition the Spanish King. The law permitted
slaves to purchase their freedom and to attain the rights of all the King s free subjects. In Florida,
the Spanish government gave freedom to escaped slaves from England s American colonies if they
converted to the Catholic faith and get recruited in the colonial military. St. Augustine had a free
African settlement and Black slaves who liberated from the English

Philosopher
Immanuel Kant
A Famous Philosopher
10/21/2012
Kelley Huttar
Immanuel Kant (1724 1804):
Immanuel Kant was a modern day German deontologist from Prussia and became one of history s
most famous Philosophers. A deontologist is someone who believes in acts that are strictly right or
wrong. Kant was an influential thinker and one of the last philosophers of the Enlightenment era.
However his work in epistemology (the study of knowledge) and theology (the study of religion)
are still influential to current philosophers of our time. He was also known for his beliefs in ethics
and his knowledge in astronomy.
Kant was an independent person, meaning he did not let others influence his way of thought. He

An example of this would be our duty as humans to tell the truth, this would be considered a perfect
duty. Lying on the other hand would be considered an imperfect duty, because no one benefits from
lying. (Kristina)
The categorical imperative has different formulations; however there are three famous
formulations per my readings. The first is act only according to that maxim whereby you can at
the same time will that it should become a universal law . This is describing an action based on
perfect duty and imperfect duty. A perfect duty is an action that would be blameworthy if the
duty was not met and imperfect duty would be an action that would not be considered
blameworthy if not met because you made the attempt for the better good of the universe and
should be praised for taking on this action on your own. An example of this is a police officer who
is killed in the line of duty, he cannot be blamed for not completing his duties as an officer because
he died while doing his job; however the officer will be praised and honored by his family and
peers for doing his duty as an officer and doing his best to uphold the law. (Driver, 2006).
The second is Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person in the person
of another, always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means . This formulation is

An Essay on the Meaning of Sustainable Development
ASSIGNMENT 1.
AN ESSAY ON THE MEANING OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.
Introduction:
In this essay I will discuss what sustainable development means? I will also discuss weak and strong
approaches to sustainability and how this is related to sustainable development. Finally I will
discuss how Isaac Construction in Christchurch has adopted sustainable development practices. In
order to somewhat understand what sustainable development means, you must first separate the
two words and view them both individually.
Development and sustainability discussion:
Firstly, development can be seen as progress and growth which builds over time at both societal
and individual levels. There are also three senses in which the word ... Show more content on

34). Strong sustainability as mentioned earlier in this essay is an environment centred, balanced
/sustained approach to the demands on Earths resources and for all human activities to be within
the limitations of our natural eco systems, and also to share those natural systems with other
species (Phase2.org). In weak sustainability, Patterson states manufactured capital can substitute for
losses in natural capital (p. 17), and also for that capital to be maintained from generation to
generation so human society is economically sustainable (Patterson, M., 2002, p. 17). From the
strong sustainability point of view this is negative. The perspective of strong sustainability is for
natural capital to be maintained, because you can t produce manufactured capital without natural
capital. Natural capital can perform many economic functions when it is maintained properly. Such
as environmental eco systems that support human life and the co existence of other species.
Through strong sustainability natural capital when maintained over numerous generations, allows
everyone over time to have equal access. This is difficult to do, being able to maintain natural
capital over multiple generations. It is much easier to maintain total capital and manufactured stock.
This is reflected in present day society, with declining natural stocks but increased manufactured

Prairie Vole
Anacker and colleagues (2011) investigated the effect of peer interaction on alcohol consumption in
prairie voles. This study sought to determine whether prairie voles would change their alcohol
consumption to match that of a partner. Briefly, animals were isolated for four days with access to
10% ethanol and water and labeled high, medium, and low drinkers based on the amount of ethanol
they consumed. Prairie voles were then housed with a same sex animal of the opposite drinking
level, with a wire mesh divider allowing them to have separate water and ethanol. Following a
period of four days, voles were again isolated to determine if any changes in drinking behavior
would continue in isolation. Results of this study indicate that prairie... Show more content on

For example, this was another study that used animals that had been isolated for a number of days.
While the reason for isolating the animals was fully explained, the stress from isolation could still
have affected results. Future studies will need to take this into account and investigate the effect of
stress on alcohol consumption in different housing conditions for these animals. Another limitation
was that, while ethanol preference and intake in comparison with total fluid intake was recorded,
these measurements were not reported in the study. While alcohol preference ratios were given to
determine which animals would be labeled high and low drinkers, the actual amount of ethanol
the animals consumed in relation to total fluid was not reported. This is a flaw, as it is necessary
to understand just how much of each substance the animals are drinking in relation to one another.
In the future, total fluid consumption for animals needs to be reported. A final limitation was that
it was not mentioned whether siblings were used in the experiment. Following weaning, animals
were housed with siblings until they were used in the study. The use of multiple siblings in the
experimental groups could have added more animals to the study, as well as added information
about the effect of genetics on drinking, as there is a genetic influence on drinking behavior and,
due to being from outbred colonies, prairie voles exhibit great genetic variability. Future studies
will need to address whether or not siblings are used. Despite the study s limitations, however, this
was the first study to provide evidence that not only could housing condition affect the drinking
level of voles, but the intake of one vole could influence the drinking level of a partner. The
findings of this study suggest that peer interactions do indeed affect drinking behavior in this
species, and that prairie voles can and do alter their drinking level to better match

Integration
Dr. Crabb suggests that there are four viewpoints to integrating spirituality and psychology. The
first being Separate but Equal This viewpoint ascertains that psychology and spirituality do not
mix any more than if a person needs a filling for a cavity or the excising of their wisdom teeth,
they do not peruse the scripture for direction the person goes to a dentist. This view is not solid
for its very premise is flawed. When dealing with man s troubling emotions and thinking scripture
has much to say about this. For example in 1 Cor. 10:5, we are directed to control our thought life

Dr. Hawkins model for the counseling process and the description of the person is diagrammed
using concentric circles (Hawkins, 2011). The first layer is where the core is: human spirit, image
of God etc. The second layer consists of the soul thoughts, will, conscience, feeling. The third layer
consist of the body. The fourth layer consists of temporal systems such as family, friends, church,
society, government, economy, and education. The fifth layer consists of supernatural systems such
as: God, good angels, demons, and Satan.
Hawkins uses a four phase model grid for tracking process. Phase1 is where the counselor listens
to the person talk and seeks to understand. Phase 2 is where one tracks what the patient is saying
and sets the direction and proposes a plan of action. In phase 3 one directs the plan of action from
the information provided and seeks to have client take ownership. In phase 4 one supports the
commitments to change through arranging for accountability. All of this takes place in an
atmosphere that is penetrated by love.

Maturing Is Hard In Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey
There comes a point in everyone s lives where they are compelled to grow up. When an individual
is young, it is advantageous to undergo new experiences and meet wonderful people, but it is also
possible to be taken advantage and make silly mistakes. In the novel Northanger Abbey, Jane
Austen accurately portrays how the process of maturing is bittersweet. A brief synopsis of this novel
is that the main character, Catherine Morland, gets invited to accompany her neighbors in Bath and
meets the love of her life, Henry Tilney. These two characters face a few minor obstacles along the
way due to her adolescence but they end up getting married, despite their differences in fortune. On
her journey, the audience learns that Catherine is highly inexperienced with society and her vivid
imagination is often the reason that predicaments occur, but she is supported and positively
influenced by Henry and Eleanor Tilney.
Throughout the novel, Northanger Abbey accurately portrays how the process of maturing is
bittersweet, especially when an individual like Catherine Morland is highly inexperienced with
society. She gets involved in similar circumstances to modern day teenagers, including that

what it may... (179). This shows how Catherine is very gullible about the material she reads and

The Health Care Field At The Association Of Schools Of...
According to The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (2016), allied health is the
segment of the health care field that delivers services involving the identification, evaluation and
prevention of diseases and disorders; dietary and nutrition services; and rehabilitation and health
systems management. One of the many health professions in allied health is in physical therapy.
Physical therapists can diagnose and treat people of all ages who have medical or health related
conditions. These conditions most likely limit their mobility and their availability to perform
everyday activities. Some of these medical or health related conditions include: cardiopulmonary,
hand and feet issues, musculoskeletal, neurological, pediatrics, sports injuries, women s health, and
pelvic floor. A physical therapist is in charge of helping patients restore mobility, manage pain, and
sometimes they can even reduce the need for surgery or prescription drugs. This is done by
executing a treatment plan. The treatment plan may encompass exercise, soft tissue massage,
functional training, physical modalities and other types of therapies (Onks Wawryzniak, 2014). To
become a physical therapist, one has to undergo many vigorous steps and obtain a Doctor of
Physical Therapydegree. The work environment of a physical therapist typically includes private
offices and clinics, hospitals, and nursing homes. According to the American Physical Therapy
Association, a lot of physical therapists

Love And Love In Plato s Interpretation Of Love
Within Symposium itself, the method to deliver the story occurs through a dialogue. Plato s choice
to do this makes Symposium quite unique and revealing. The speakers throughout the text delve
deeper and deeper into their discussion of love by urging and sometimes challenging their
comrades to push further. The order in which the speakers reveal their own interpretation of love
appears to be purposeful for Platos intentions. Each man represents a different world view or lens
that can be taken when pondering love: what it is, what it means, and why it exists? The
collaboration between the individual thinkers at the symposiumexists in a sort of They say, I say
pattern. Since the text follows this method, it can be argued that the best way to discover or gain
understanding of a topic involves the discussion and progression of ideas.
The progression of the discussion shifts from Phaedrus, who begins with the notion that love leads
to a virtuous life, which Pausanias expands upon claiming that there are two forms of love,
common and heavenly, the latter being the most virtuous (Plato 178C D, 180E). Then Eryximachus
distinguishes the benefits of love as health and harmony (Plato 186C D). Eventually the discussion
makes its way to Socrates, who by this point is able to conclude that love has a strong correlation to
wisdom. Socrates was able to reach this understanding with the assistance of his companions and by
questioning and discussing their own individual theories. When

Soldier s Home by Ernest Hemingway Essay
Soldier s Home by Ernest Hemingway
In Soldier s Home, Ernest Hemingway depicts Harold Krebs return home from World War I and
the problems he faces when dealing with his homecoming and transition back towards a normal
life. After the fighting overseas commenced, it took Krebs a year to finally leave Europe and
return to his family in Oklahoma. Once home, he found it hard to talk about all he had seen in his
tour of duty overseas, which should be attributed to the fact that he saw action in some of the
bloodiest, most crucial battles towards the culmination of the war. Therefore, Krebs difficulty in
acknowledging his past is because he was indeed a good soldier (139), whose efforts in order to

This is why he could not love anymore; the mere thought of it nauseated him. He could not
assimilate back into living a regular life with the thoughts of regular men. In seeing so much
that should be out of the ordinary, he never wanted to deal with common human issues again,
not to mention consequences. Krebs relationship with his sister is probably his best with anyone
in the house. This is most likely due to the fact that she is around 11 years old and is infatuated
with her older brother. When she talks about telling her friends where she learned to pitch a ball,
she says I tell them all you re my beau. Aren t you my beau, Hare? (139). This type of talk does not
bother Krebs in this situation, unlike the girls whom he refuses to talk to in his town. His sister
is pre pubescent, so she has unlikely developed the body of a woman and also, she shows
improbable signs of having sexual urges by asking him if she is his girl and if he will love [her]
always (140). By observing the problems Krebs has with his own family members after the war, one
can understand why his problems communicating in the outside world, with strangers, exists.
While living at home and re adjusting to what had been his old life, Krebs could not even interact

Reviewing The Contract With Marshall
In examining the contract with Marshall there are a number of factors to consider. I would have
to examine all of the professional, legal, and spiritual implications of deciding to part ways with
doing business with his store. Marshall was an intricate part of getting the grapes initial recognition
and the impending financial success may not have been possible without his willingness to
promote the grapes in his store. Without taking the proper steps to rectify this situation in a

Investopedia states: An implied contract is an agreement created by actions of the parties
involved, but it is not written or spoken. This is a contract assumed to have been drawn. In this
case, there is no written record nor any actual verbal agreement. (Investopedia, 2010) Under
these terms, I would have to determine what a fair interpretation of our implied contract would
be and to what extent Marshall should be compensated under those terms. I am under no legal
obligation to continue to provide goods and services and would instead insist on using a
mutually agreed upon mediator to hash out a possible financial settlement to compensate
Marshall for his promotion of the product and find out whether or not the new company that
would purchase my product would be willing to offer Marshall a set rate with their acquisition

that he could use Promissory Estoppel as a legal defense should our case be brought before a

Advantages Of Multilevel Inverter
CHAPTER 3
MULTILEVEL INVERTER TOPOLOGIES AND CONTROL SCHEME
3.1. Multilevel Inverter
Multilevel inverters have ability to generate low switching frequency high quality output
waveforms with several high voltages and higher power applications and the general structure of
multilevel converter is synthesizes a sinusoidal voltage from several level of voltages. The
multilevel inverter has overcome the limitations of conventional two level voltage converters. The
advantages of multilevel inverter are higher power quality, lower switching losses, low
electromagnetic interference and higher voltage capability.
The voltage source inverter gives an output voltage or a current with levels either 0 or В±V_dc.

and input node (dc) voltages are designed by V_1,V_2, etc as shown in Figure 1a. V_a,V_b and

Essay on Jason vs Odysseus
Artful VS Artless
Both famous heroes from antiquity, Jason and Odysseus have much in common and just as much
not. It has been said that The Voyage of the Argo, written centuries past The Odyssey, is an
imitation or some form of plagiarism of the primary epic poem of ancient Greece. I like the other
train of thought; it is more an acknowledgement or tip of the hat, so to speak, specifically to The
Odyssey. Both tales center on a hero and a fantastic voyage. Jason was less the virtuous demi God
we see in Odysseus. At first glance, he appeared an unlikely hero. Not so Odysseus, who
embarked on what, should have been a short journey home following the fall of Troy, but became
an epic journey with many obstacles and delays along the way. ... Show more content on

Aeetes was used to getting visitors who had come for the fleece, and had devised a test for
quickly getting rid of them. He had a standing challenge to give up the fleece to anyone who could
tame two fire breathing bulls and then use them to plow a field with dragon s teeth. Jason was
stumped by how to pass this quest and was saved at the last moment by Aeetes own daughter Medea
, who gave him a potion of wild herbs that would protect him from the fiery breath of the bulls.
With the help, Jason easily tamed the bulls, and began to sow the field, but noticed that where
he had put the teeth, soldiers were springing up from the ground. Jason hid from them, most
cowardly, but then came up with a plan for getting rid of them. He picked up a huge stone and
threw it into the middle of the mass of soldiers, killing one. A quarrel immediately started
amongst the soldiers over who had thrown the rock, and a fight broke out, killing all but a few,
whom Jason was able to easily overcome. With the help of Medea, Jason was able to steal the

Becoming An Educator For English Language Learners
Becoming an educator is what I want to be in life and when I do become an educator I want to
be more than just an average teacher. My objective as a teacher is to be able to teach students
the basic skills in different subjects to increase their cognitive development to prepare them for
the path that the future holds for them. I want to be an educator who helps individuals succeed.
As a future educator for English language learners I have learned that teaching goes beyond core
instruction. I want to teach my students manners, compassion toward others, empathy,
sympathy, cultural awareness to help them to become the best they can be as a person and as a
student. I want my students to develop their own moral and ethics. Preferably, I want to teach
younger students and I have a great interest in teaching students English as their second
language. Being bilingual I have developed a passion in helping students who speak another
language and come from other countries because it reminds me of my family. My parents came
to the United States knowing no English and now they have accomplished so much as well as
learned how to speak English. Growing up in Storm Lake, Iowa I was fortunate enough to be
around a diverse group of students. I have always been intrigued by all the different cultures,
values, and beliefs of my high school peers. I believe becoming an educator will be a wonderful
journey in which I will shape the minds and skills of diverse learners who will also shape my

Significantly, the increasing of cable TV, the pandemic of the HIV/AIDS disease, the changes in

Economic Improvements In The 1700s And 1800s
The 1700s and 1800s bought big changes for the United States. The United States became stronger
due to economic improvements, the War of 1812 and the westward movements. Part of the reason
that the United States became stronger is because of economic improvements. These economic
improvements include: the National Bank, the American System, and The First Industrial
Revolution. When Alexander Hamilton called 8jmfor a Bank of the United States, he imagined a
central bank that would strengthen the national economy. This would allow for the growth in
business without relying on exports to increase money. Hamilton argued that the bank would
strengthen the government by lending money. The First Bank of the United States brought more
strength to the United States money and expanded the economy more than what was expected.
Many congressmen claimed that the bank was unconstitutional and supported the North over the
South. In 1811, they rejected to restate the charter of the First Bank of the United States. In 1828,
Andrew Jackson was elected president and was seeking change because he was frustrated with the
central bank. He lost everything during the market expansion and blamed the banking system for
his financial problems. President Jackson declared war on the Second Bank in 1829. Congress
struggled with the issue of the national government s encouraging economic development. Henry
Clay made an approach that was called the American System. It consisted of: a duty to protect the

Visual Analysis Of Into The Wild By Ryan Harvey
When I looked through the TCC NW student collection, I got to appreciate a lot of art that I had
never paid attention to before. There were a lot of great pieces, but the first one that really spoke
to me was Into the Wild by Ryan Harvey. This painting, featuring a scared young boy has a very
clear mood and theme, and I feel like there are many meanings that can be taken from it. Ryan
Harvey uses lightand colorto really push his message, and he makes the viewer really feel the
emotionin the painting. From an objective standpoint, there are two main focal points. The first
one is a young boy, maybe 4 years old. He has a blank expression on his face as he looks straight
out into the lens. The boy is the only part... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think that the author does an amazing job portraying his idea without having to tell us very
much. This is not to say though, that I agree with his message. Harvey seems to be saying we
are born pure and are corrupted by the world as we grow, but I strongly disagree with this. As we
go on through life, we meet new people and learn new things. Even though there are times where
things can be going downhill, generally people will move up throughout their life, rather than
falling back. Although I don t agree with his message, I can definitely understand where he
comes from. There are some ways in which the blissful ignorance of childhood is better than
knowing the truth, but as you grow you learn to become a part of the world, and whether you
choose to go down the light or the dark path is your own choice to make. In conclusion, Ryan
Harvey s Into the Wild, is a great example of how a picture is worth a thousand words. Harvey
tells us a whole story, of a young boy and his purity along with foreshadowing his inevitable
descent into the gloomy world around him. Into the Wild seems to have a pessimistic viewpoint
on the world, which I personally don t agree with, but the message in itself is powerful; and the
use light and color really do their part in pushing the message, making the viewer really feel the

Distance Education Essay
Distance Education
Distance education is a process that creates and provides access to learning when time and distance
separate the source of information and the learners (Zhang, 1998, p.1). Distance education defies
time and space and can help create a virtual schoolhouse, or a classroom without walls (Wheat,
1998, p.1). The need to take the distance out of education has not been driven largely by sheer
need to bridge physical separations. It has been based mainly on providing access as open as
possible to those who are willing to avail themselves of the opportunities education affords them
(Tam, 1998, p.3). Education needs to reach those who are disadvantaged by location, finance, time,
and resources (Tam, 1998, p.3). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Flexibility is one advantage Web based learning has over the traditional classroom...and you can go
as fast or slow as you need to learn the course materials (Clarker, 1999, p.2). Technology is
opening up many new options for students. Students who wish to continue their education are no
longer limited to a traditional classroom setting (Sonner, 1999, p.1). According to Arlene Krebs of
New Orbit Communications, we have the third wave [of distance learning], where distance
learning is a combination of video and Internet (Hancock, 1999, p.2). However, creators of
distance learning tend to worry about how it looks more than being sensitive to what the learner
really needs (Hancock, 1999, p.2).
What Does the Distance Education Learner Really Need (and where does the instructional
technologist come into play)?
Distance learning, which is a form of multimedia, depends on a rich interactive environment to
foster learning (Hancock, 1999, p.1). The challenge for distance educators is to set up a cognitively
rich learning environment to facilitate the distant students construction processes (Zhang, 1998,
p.4). Modern distance education is student centered, not teacher centered...distance educators are
facilitators of their students education (Markel, 1999, p.3). Learner centric theories focus on the
importance of the learner over the instructor to the instructional activity (Leonard, 1999, p.3). The
new paradigm [for distance learning] is a more

The Relationship Between Warm Colors and Positive Mood
This research is important because every day we have to make choices that include choosing a
color when for example we decide what shade of makeup to use, what color of clothes to buy or
decide what color to paint a wall. Even it has been proved that people often associate their mood
with a specific color. Some frequently responses when a person is feeling sad is to describe it as
feeling blue or when a person fall in love is common to hear that now this person view the world

Author David Simmons studied color effects more generally in his book, Color and emotion: New
directions in color studies. Simmons conducted a lot of experiments trying to prove that color can
enhance positive moods. In one of his experiments he asked 56 undergraduate psychology students
to paint a white wall with a color that made them to feel positive. The results indicated that yellow,
orange and red were picked as the most positive color of the 9 color samples in total.
Jacob and Suess (1975) disagree with the general theory that warm colors are more appealing
and tend to enhance positive mood. They found that participants shown a more positive mood
towards cool colors rather than warm colors. In his article, Effects of four psychological primary
colors on anxiety state; Perceptual and motor skills, states that previous studies may have
overlooked the effects of colors on standard pencil and paper measures of anxiety. He
investigated the effects of primary colors such as: red, yellow, blue and green and the level of
anxiety of the participants. The researcher administered the state scale of the State Trait Anxiety
Inventory to 40 participants. After reviewing the results he found that colors red and yellow were
associated with high levels of anxiety by the participants. On the other hand, color green was
described as calming and associated with low levels of anxiety by the participants.

Accident investigators found that a replacement windscreen had been installed 27 hours before the
flight, and that the procedure had been approved by the Shift Maintenance Manager. 84 of the 90
windscreen retention bolts were 0.026 inches too small in diameter, while the remaining six were
0.1 inches too short ( British airways flight 5390, ). The investigation revealed that the previous
windscreen had been fitted with incorrect bolts, which had been replaced on a like for like basis by
the Shift Maintenance Manager without reference to the maintenance documentation. The air
pressure difference between the cabin and the outside during the flight proved to be too much,
leading to the failure of the windscreen. The incident also brought to attention a design flaw in the
aircraft of the windscreen being secured from the outside of the aircraft, putting a greater stress on
the bolts than if they were secured from the inside. Investigators blamed the British Airways
Birmingham Airport Shift Maintenance Manager for installing the incorrect bolts during the
windscreen replacement and for failing to follow official British Airways policies. They also found
fault with British Airways policies, which should have required testing or verification by another
person for this critical task. Finally, investigators blamed the local Birmingham Airport management
for not directly monitoring the

Sleep Figurative Language
The definition for rest is to stop being active for a period of time in order to relax and get back
your strength, or to cause someone or something to stop doing an activity in order to get back
strength (Cambridge). The definition for sleep is resting state in which the body is not active
and the mind is unconscious (Cambridge). Words have more than one meaning; in many poems
rest may mean rest in peace which means death. Another example of death is in the word sleep.
In some areas in the bible, sleep represents death. Words can be interpreted different forms using
figurative language, imagery, and symbolism. Figurative language is not meant to be interpreted
literally, but is used to intensify the work and please the readers imaginations. In line one in the
poem it states, Where sunless rivers weep , the sunless rivers means the darkness or night time.
Christina Rossetti was a religious person who used her faith in her writing. An example of this
is Led by a single star (5), the star could represent the star on top of the manger, leading people to
the birth of Jesus. There are also similes, metaphors, and repetition in the poem Dreamland .

The author states that children who are immunized are less healthy in general than non immunized
children.
One of the strengths of this article is that the author encourages research before making a decision
in regards to immunization.
There are a number of weaknesses to discuss, the validity of the research is questionable, (due to
further research, contradicting her claims. ) The statement made about Japanese immunization was
found to be incorrect.
Some of the authors information is generalized such as statements like I have NEVER met a fully
vaccinated child that is healthier and more robust than a well nourished, unvaccinated child.
A lot of the statements made are based on her own beliefs and are not backed up by facts and
figures. Someday there will be a study that shows that unvaccinated children have many less health
problems than their vaccinated peers. Don t wait until this study is finally done because it will be
too late for your child. Is an example of this kind of statement.

John Stuart Mill s Final Chapter Summary
Mill begins his final chapter by trying to cover the meaning of justice, by coming up with a list
of things that are frequently classified as just or unjust. He examined what justice is and says that
it is the concept of the moral rights of an individual. He talks about so many solid examples of
injustice. Firstly, it is unjust to deprive one of his legal rights, violating one s moral rights,
everyone should receive what the deserve whether good or bad, break contracts and be partial. Mill
differentiated other outlines of moralityfrom justice through the idea of a perfect duty. Perfect
duties, are what one must always fulfil and have not choice over it, and imperfect duty is we have

Transformation Of Bilbo Baggins In The Hobbit By J. R.
The Hobbit is a book written by J.R.R. Tolkien that has entertained people for decades. The Hobbit
is an adventure fiction story. The main theme is the development and transformation of Bilbo
Baggins into a hero and an outgoing person. I chose this theme because at the beginning of the
story, Bilbo is a person that only worries about himself and only focuses on the comforts in life;
and is very introverted. Towards the ending of the story, Bilbo transforms into a hero due to the
situations he encounters.
The setting of the story occurs in a fictional place called Middle Earth. We don t know the year the
story takes place in. Consisting in northern Middle Earth is the Shire, the lush pasture in which
hobbits reside, along with the western lands. The Misty Mountains run directly through northern
Middle Earth from north to south. Beyond the Misty Mountains to the east lies the dreaded forest
of Mirkwood, which is of immense size. To the north of Mirkwood lie the Grey Mountains, which
are not very important in this book. To the east of Mirkwood lies the Running River and Lake
Town, and the Lonely Mountain. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

King Under the Mountain, which refers to the Lonely Mountain. Thorin s ancestors had
accumulated a great amount of wealth, and were prospering in the valley of the Lonely Mountain.
However, a fiendish dragon by the name of Smaug had seen this great wealth, and was overtaken
by greed. He killed everyone and burned the surrounding villages. He has ever since been guarding

Examining Psychology
Time In The Mind: Examining Psychology Psychology is as ancient as mankind. The concept of
psychology has been dated back to 600 B.C. Early Greek philosophers examined, theorized human
traits and their actions; their studies are now to be considered and known as psychology. Mankind
has molded psychology throughout decades into what it is today the study of the human mind and
the way it affects one s behavior. Psychotherapy and ESP, extrasensory perception, are techniques
that are used to improve human health and well being and their efficacy is widely debated.
PSYCHOTHERAPY Psychotherapy is the treatment of mental or emotional illness by talking about
problems rather than by using medicine or drugs (Merriam Webster), thus aiding one s illness(es)

psychologists from Northern University, John Vessey, and Kenneth Howard reported, those likely
to enter therapy are female, white, educated, well paid and divorced, separated and often never
married (Goode and Warner 114), thus proving that psychotherapy is often stereotyped. Statistics

Women In The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
The narration in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow functions as a way to give authority to the women
of Tarry Town. This power of feminine is elicit by Washington Irving who gives respect and
superiority to women indirectly, but yet evidently through third person narration. Furthermore
through Katrina he parallels the power of Tarry Town s women by illustrating their agency to beget
the downfall of Ichabod.
Irving draws out Katrina Van Tassel only in relation to the farm not to demean her, but rather to
bring out her importance in the town to expose the dominance of women in Tarry Town. At the
beginning of the story Knickerbockers sets the importance of women by stating that the town s

This foreshadows that Katrina will be the desire of the town because she is the fertile nook of the
village where her wealth and power will be passed on to her kids. Katrina is shown as a symbol of
wealth and fertility not to degrade women, but rather to bare the fact they are needed to sustain and
conceive future generations of the town.
Katrina initiates to uphold her agency by gaining Ichabod s affections through her flirtatious
conduct which parallels with the women of town who are looked upon by Ichabod due to their
storytelling skills. The narrator uses diction to initially elicit Katrina as a modern independent lady
who
She [is] withal a little of a coquette, as might be perceived even in her dress, which [is] a mixture of
ancient and modern fashions, as most suited to set her charms. She wore...short petticoat to display
the prettiest foot and ankle in the country round. [Ichabod] passes long winter evening with the Old
Dutch wives... and listen to their marvellous tales of ghosts...
In the first passage Katrina s independence is illustrated through the use if vivid imagery language.
For instance she is perceived negatively as a coquette who willingly displays herself to the men of
the village. This brings out the power of woman in the town because she has freedom of clothing
which is of ancient and modern fashion. Through this Irving inexplicitly states that Katrina is

Bingo History
A Brief History of Bingo
As is the case with many historical facts, the facts as we understand them today have been
written by the victors. This is especially true when we re discussing the history of the great game
of Bingo, which is littered with vague accounts and wild inconsistencies. Of course the game didn
t just spring into being one dark, cold night, as with most things, there was a seed of an idea that
evolved and changed over decades before it became the game that we all know and love today.
When it comes down to it, Bingo is, above all else, a form of gambling, which has been around in
one form or another for thousands of years as a leisure pursuit. All forms of gambling have
changed over time as cultures have moved on, but bingo is unlike any other game of chance,
because it s arguably more about the community and the sheer fun of the game than the prize.
However, it wasn t always that way.
The game has its origins in the lottery games that were popular in Europe throughout the 16th
century, which were based on the drawing of random numbers (sound familiar?) and basic lucky. To
get from there to where we are today was a gradual process.

calls in order to cover the gap between calls and make the game seem more fun. As for the calls
themselves, many of them have military names, and that s because the game was played often (as
previously mentioned) by the British military in the 1930 s and

Summary Of Formation By Anne Moody
These lyrics symbolize power of black women and it proves that as women we have the ability
to get in formation and set free from the growing cultural standards and turn out to be successful
while being leaders. BeyoncГ©, one of the most highly recognized black women of our time is a
model of how black women are looked at in the media. As a society, we are so used to looking at
celebrities and models and we forget what the average womanlooks like and from there we
continue to stereotype and pick a part things that are wrong with black women. In turn, we are
degrading their identity and I think Formation does a good job by reenacting a black society and
the troubles that we go through.

The Theory Of Convivencia Between Christians And Muslims
Is the theory of convivencia between Christians, Jews and Muslims in Iberia convincing in the first
four centuries after 711?
4243296
Word Count: 1904
The theory of convivencia between Christians, Jews and Muslims is considered to be the period in
Medieval Spain in which the three Abrahamic religions were able to coexist and live together
peacefully. The notion of convivencia not only refers to the overall tolerance of Christians and
Jews to be able to practice their religion in Al Andalus, it also incorporates the idea of members of
these three faiths sharing a common culture, a language and working towards advancing
civilisation through poetry, literature and science. Historians who have studied this issue are
largely divided on whether this time period really was as harmonious as it is commonly
described. Historians such as Bat Ye or highlight the lack of convivencia by placing emphasis on
how leaders of Al Andalus would enforce rules such as granting non Muslims with the status of
dhimmi, essentially making them second class citizens which by today s standards would
undoubtedly lead to the theory of convivencia being somewhat unpersuasive. However, relative to
this era, Islamic Iberia was the apex of religious tolerance, immensely surpassing the level of
tolerance in surrounding nations and empires. Montgomery Watt goes as far to say that under
Muslim rule, Jews and Christians were considered as People of the Book who were to be a

The Problem Of A Criminal Trial Under South Australian Law
lood. Sticky, hot, messy, awful blood. For most of us, the sight of it turns the stomach, but in the
court of law, blood can tell a lot more about a crime scene than you might think. Forensic
bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) is the interpretation of bloodstains for the purpose of
reconstructing the events that took place in the case of violent crimes. Using the sciences of fluid
dynamics and trigonometry, BPA examiners form opinions about what did or did not happen by
examining elements of the stains such as the size, shape, distribution and location of the
bloodstains. Following the analysis of the crime scene, BPA examiners then prepare to present
often critical evidence to a jury in the court of law. In many cases including here in Australia BPA is
essential and pivotal to the investigation and can contribute greatly to the outcome of a criminal
trial under South Australian law.
Bloodstain Pattern Principals
To understand how analysts interpret bloodstains, one must first understand the basic properties of
blood. Blood contains both liquid (plasma and serum) and solids (red blood cells, white blood
cells, platelets and proteins). Blood is in a liquid state when inside the body, and when it exits
the body, it does so as a liquid. However, this liquid state does not last very long after the blood
leaves the body. Except for people with hemophilia, blood will begin to clot within a few minutes,
forming a dark, shiny gel like substance that grows more solid as time

William Faulkner s Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech and its Relevance
William Faulkner s Nobel Prize acceptance speech is a dynamic statement that challenges the writer
and man to not simply sit around and watch the end of man, but to help man endure and prevail.
Faulkner refuses to accept the naturalists theme that human beings are dominated, controlled, and
overwhelmed by their environment and nature. He does not accept the end of man, but rather says
that man will prevail. Though many have accepted the easy way out by saying man will simply
endure because one can hear his soft, inexhaustible voice even after death, Faulkner also refuses
this. He says man will not only endure, but he shall prevail or triumph over death. Man will ... Show

Eliot. Eliot wrote about man s effort to transcend the force of time and man s effort to achieve the
timelessness of the eternal. His writings reflect his own personal themes and direction of his life:
the quest for eternal salvation. He believes one can endure and prevail as Faulkner does as evident
in The Wasteland . The Wasteland emphasizes the decay of the western civilization, yet there was
hope and courage in the writings. Eliot joins William Faulkner in the argument that man controls
his own destiny.
Along with many other authors, Stephen Crane would disagree with Eliot and Faulkner on their
views because he was a naturalistic author. Crane saw human beings as wholly controlled by their
environment and their heredity. The Open Boat expresses Crane s naturalistic qualities showing
men having no control over their destiny as they are stuck in the ocean and are controlled by the
sea. Although Crane is seen as a naturalist writer, he is also seen as a Christian symbolist expressing
ultimate understanding of faith and the redemption of people.
Robert Frost, like Stephen Crane, also was a naturalist writer and would disagree with Faulkner.
He believed man had no free will and man would become the sum of your choices. Frost writes in
ordinary speech as Faulkner did in his Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech.
Like Frost and Crane, Eugene O Neill also expressed a naturalistic point of view on his writings. O

Character Change In Macbeth
In the play Macbeth, William Shakespeare showcases throughout the story as the main character
Macbeth slowly changes in consciousness through his conquest for power. Shakespeare manages to
portray their change in character through excitement associated with external action. Shakespeare
shows through the course of the play as Macbethchanges from loyal general of King Duncanas he
transitions to the tyrant king who will do anything to have his way. At first, Macbeth and his wife,
Lady Macbeth, plot to murder King Duncan in hopes of becoming the next king because of a

This enforces the idea that Macbeth has a guilty conscience and understands no matter how hard
he tries he will not be able to clean his hands of this wrongful deed. After the murder of King
Duncan Macbeth s guilt starts to eat away at him a dagger of the mind, a false creation (II.I.50).
This shows that Macbeth is becoming aware of his dark nature within himself. the dagger scene
shows criminality becomes a field for phenomenological speculation in the play (Curran). This
point by Curran emphasizes as to how Shakespeare slowly introduces how Macbeth will slowly
have a change in heart. As the play goes on, Macbeth is having mixed thoughts about every
minor detail as he regrets things that he already set out to do, but he understands that he must
carry out these malicious deeds for the prophecies to become true. As the story progresses,
Macbeth becomes more and more paranoid as one of the prophecies the three witches
prophesied that Banquo s descendants will be kings. Macbeth realizes that his ownership of the
crown may be short because he does not know when Banquo s prophecy will come true, so he
plots to kill Banquo they hailed him father to a line of kings upon my head they placed a fruitless

Banquo s descendants. This shows that Macbeth has fully changed in character from loyal general

  • 2. The Inner City Of Los Angeles Growing up in the inner city of Los Angeles taught me many things; make sure you re inside before the street lights come on, never wear all red or blue, and make sure you get a good education so that one day you can leave the inner city behind. I was fortunate enough to have both a mother and a father who stressed the importance of excelling academically because attending an inner city, LA county, public school did not instill a love of academics in myself or my peers. Our teachers had checked out, the curriculum was not inspiring or relatable, and everyday there was yet another fight happening during recess. As time went on I witnessed my classmates and I take completely different paths. The strong support system I had at home proved effective. As I went on to go to college, many of my peers dropped out, the dismal state of our public school system had clearly failed them. During my undergraduate studies, the stories of my old classmates did not leave my mind. I remained deeply intrigued with the struggles of inner city people of color and the mobility they are granted. I began to volunteer at ArtStart, a non profit program that taught previously incarcerated youth the art of poetry, and I was immediately intrigued by the stories of what had led these children to a life of crime at such a young age. In these students, I saw my childhood friends who had went down the same path many years before and I wanted to know why; where did the disconnect between the school system ... • 3. Spanish American Slavery Spain and Britain treated the Native Americans like slaves and participated in the slave trade. Nevertheless, the Spanish government prohibited Florida Indians to be slaves since it was the law and it was practiced in other spanish colonies. The governors of Florida and its religious leaders allowed the Hispanic colonists oppressed Indians to do labor for little or no wages. Many Native Americans were badly treated, poorly fed, and died because of forced labor. St. Augustine was mostly built by Indians with forced labor. There were slaves in Florida, but not as many in England s Carolina colony where there were twice as many Africans as whites. Spanish law treated slaves differently than English law. In the law of the English, a slave was property that could be bought, sold, and punished possibly even to death, without any legal or civil rights. English wives were treated as property of their husbands. Spanish law perceived slaves as wretched people who still had legal rights, could sue their owners in court, and could own property. Both men and women slaves could petition the Spanish King. The law permitted slaves to purchase their freedom and to attain the rights of all the King s free subjects. In Florida, the Spanish government gave freedom to escaped slaves from England s American colonies if they converted to the Catholic faith and get recruited in the colonial military. St. Augustine had a free African settlement and Black slaves who liberated from the English ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Philosopher Immanuel Kant A Famous Philosopher 10/21/2012 Kelley Huttar Immanuel Kant (1724 1804): Immanuel Kant was a modern day German deontologist from Prussia and became one of history s most famous Philosophers. A deontologist is someone who believes in acts that are strictly right or wrong. Kant was an influential thinker and one of the last philosophers of the Enlightenment era. However his work in epistemology (the study of knowledge) and theology (the study of religion) are still influential to current philosophers of our time. He was also known for his beliefs in ethics and his knowledge in astronomy. Kant was an independent person, meaning he did not let others influence his way of thought. He created his own moral ... Lying on the other hand would be considered an imperfect duty, because no one benefits from lying. (Kristina) The categorical imperative has different formulations; however there are three famous formulations per my readings. The first is act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law . This is describing an action based on perfect duty and imperfect duty. A perfect duty is an action that would be blameworthy if the duty was not met and imperfect duty would be an action that would not be considered blameworthy if not met because you made the attempt for the better good of the universe and should be praised for taking on this action on your own. An example of this is a police officer who is killed in the line of duty, he cannot be blamed for not completing his duties as an officer because he died while doing his job; however the officer will be praised and honored by his family and peers for doing his duty as an officer and doing his best to uphold the law. (Driver, 2006). The second is Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person in the person of another, always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means . • 6. An Essay on the Meaning of Sustainable Development ASSIGNMENT 1. AN ESSAY ON THE MEANING OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. Introduction: In this essay I will discuss what sustainable development means? I will also discuss weak and strong approaches to sustainability and how this is related to sustainable development. Finally I will discuss how Isaac Construction in Christchurch has adopted sustainable development practices. In order to somewhat understand what sustainable development means, you must first separate the two words and view them both individually. Development and sustainability discussion: Firstly, development can be seen as progress and growth which builds over time at both societal and individual levels. There are also three senses in which the word ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 34). Strong sustainability as mentioned earlier in this essay is an environment centred, balanced /sustained approach to the demands on Earths resources and for all human activities to be within the limitations of our natural eco systems, and also to share those natural systems with other species (Phase2.org). In weak sustainability, Patterson states manufactured capital can substitute for losses in natural capital (p. 17), and also for that capital to be maintained from generation to generation so human society is economically sustainable (Patterson, M., 2002, p. 17). From the strong sustainability point of view this is negative. The perspective of strong sustainability is for natural capital to be maintained, because you can t produce manufactured capital without natural capital. Natural capital can perform many economic functions when it is maintained properly. Such as environmental eco systems that support human life and the co existence of other species. Through strong sustainability natural capital when maintained over numerous generations, allows everyone over time to have equal access. This is difficult to do, being able to maintain natural capital over multiple generations. It is much easier to maintain total capital and manufactured stock. This is reflected in present day society, with declining natural stocks but increased manufactured ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Prairie Vole Anacker and colleagues (2011) investigated the effect of peer interaction on alcohol consumption in prairie voles. This study sought to determine whether prairie voles would change their alcohol consumption to match that of a partner. Briefly, animals were isolated for four days with access to 10% ethanol and water and labeled high, medium, and low drinkers based on the amount of ethanol they consumed. Prairie voles were then housed with a same sex animal of the opposite drinking level, with a wire mesh divider allowing them to have separate water and ethanol. Following a period of four days, voles were again isolated to determine if any changes in drinking behavior would continue in isolation. Results of this study indicate that prairie... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, this was another study that used animals that had been isolated for a number of days. While the reason for isolating the animals was fully explained, the stress from isolation could still have affected results. Future studies will need to take this into account and investigate the effect of stress on alcohol consumption in different housing conditions for these animals. Another limitation was that, while ethanol preference and intake in comparison with total fluid intake was recorded, these measurements were not reported in the study. While alcohol preference ratios were given to determine which animals would be labeled high and low drinkers, the actual amount of ethanol the animals consumed in relation to total fluid was not reported. This is a flaw, as it is necessary to understand just how much of each substance the animals are drinking in relation to one another. In the future, total fluid consumption for animals needs to be reported. A final limitation was that it was not mentioned whether siblings were used in the experiment. Following weaning, animals were housed with siblings until they were used in the study. The use of multiple siblings in the experimental groups could have added more animals to the study, as well as added information about the effect of genetics on drinking, as there is a genetic influence on drinking behavior and, due to being from outbred colonies, prairie voles exhibit great genetic variability. Future studies will need to address whether or not siblings are used. Despite the study s limitations, however, this was the first study to provide evidence that not only could housing condition affect the drinking level of voles, but the intake of one vole could influence the drinking level of a partner. The findings of this study suggest that peer interactions do indeed affect drinking behavior in this species, and that prairie voles can and do alter their drinking level to better match ... Theory Critique of Crabb and Hawkins Essay Theory Critique of Crabb and Hawkins Jeremy Poling Liberty University Integration Dr. Crabb suggests that there are four viewpoints to integrating spirituality and psychology. The first being Separate but Equal This viewpoint ascertains that psychology and spirituality do not mix any more than if a person needs a filling for a cavity or the excising of their wisdom teeth, they do not peruse the scripture for direction the person goes to a dentist. This view is not solid for its very premise is flawed. When dealing with man s troubling emotions and thinking scripture has much to say about this. The fifth layer consists of supernatural systems such as: God, good angels, demons, and Satan. Hawkins uses a four phase model grid for tracking process. Phase1 is where the counselor listens to the person talk and seeks to understand. Phase 2 is where one tracks what the patient is saying and sets the direction and proposes a plan of action. In phase 3 one directs the plan of action from the information provided and seeks to have client take ownership. • 9. Maturing Is Hard In Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey There comes a point in everyone s lives where they are compelled to grow up. When an individual is young, it is advantageous to undergo new experiences and meet wonderful people, but it is also possible to be taken advantage and make silly mistakes. In the novel Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen accurately portrays how the process of maturing is bittersweet. A brief synopsis of this novel is that the main character, Catherine Morland, gets invited to accompany her neighbors in Bath and meets the love of her life, Henry Tilney. These two characters face a few minor obstacles along the way due to her adolescence but they end up getting married, despite their differences in fortune. On her journey, the audience learns that Catherine is highly inexperienced with society and her vivid imagination is often the reason that predicaments occur, but she is supported and positively influenced by Henry and Eleanor Tilney. • 11. The Health Care Field At The Association Of Schools Of... According to The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (2016), allied health is the segment of the health care field that delivers services involving the identification, evaluation and prevention of diseases and disorders; dietary and nutrition services; and rehabilitation and health systems management. One of the many health professions in allied health is in physical therapy. Physical therapists can diagnose and treat people of all ages who have medical or health related conditions. These conditions most likely limit their mobility and their availability to perform everyday activities. Some of these medical or health related conditions include: cardiopulmonary, hand and feet issues, musculoskeletal, neurological, pediatrics, sports injuries, women s health, and pelvic floor. A physical therapist is in charge of helping patients restore mobility, manage pain, and sometimes they can even reduce the need for surgery or prescription drugs. This is done by executing a treatment plan. The treatment plan may encompass exercise, soft tissue massage, functional training, physical modalities and other types of therapies (Onks Wawryzniak, 2014). To become a physical therapist, one has to undergo many vigorous steps and obtain a Doctor of Physical Therapydegree. The work environment of a physical therapist typically includes private offices and clinics, hospitals, and nursing homes. • 12. Love And Love In Plato s Interpretation Of Love Within Symposium itself, the method to deliver the story occurs through a dialogue. Plato s choice to do this makes Symposium quite unique and revealing. The speakers throughout the text delve deeper and deeper into their discussion of love by urging and sometimes challenging their comrades to push further. The order in which the speakers reveal their own interpretation of love appears to be purposeful for Platos intentions. Each man represents a different world view or lens that can be taken when pondering love: what it is, what it means, and why it exists? The collaboration between the individual thinkers at the symposiumexists in a sort of They say, I say pattern. Since the text follows this method, it can be argued that the best way to discover or gain understanding of a topic involves the discussion and progression of ideas. The progression of the discussion shifts from Phaedrus, who begins with the notion that love leads to a virtuous life, which Pausanias expands upon claiming that there are two forms of love, common and heavenly, the latter being the most virtuous (Plato 178C D, 180E). Then Eryximachus distinguishes the benefits of love as health and harmony (Plato 186C D). Eventually the discussion makes its way to Socrates, who by this point is able to conclude that love has a strong correlation to wisdom. Socrates was able to reach this understanding with the assistance of his companions and by questioning and discussing their own individual theories. When ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Soldier s Home by Ernest Hemingway Essay Soldier s Home by Ernest Hemingway In Soldier s Home, Ernest Hemingway depicts Harold Krebs return home from World War I and the problems he faces when dealing with his homecoming and transition back towards a normal life. After the fighting overseas commenced, it took Krebs a year to finally leave Europe and return to his family in Oklahoma. Once home, he found it hard to talk about all he had seen in his tour of duty overseas, which should be attributed to the fact that he saw action in some of the bloodiest, most crucial battles towards the culmination of the war. He could not assimilate back into living a regular life with the thoughts of regular men. In seeing so much that should be out of the ordinary, he never wanted to deal with common human issues again, not to mention consequences. Krebs relationship with his sister is probably his best with anyone in the house. This is most likely due to the fact that she is around 11 years old and is infatuated with her older brother. When she talks about telling her friends where she learned to pitch a ball, she says I tell them all you re my beau. Aren t you my beau, Hare? (139). This type of talk does not bother Krebs in this situation, unlike the girls whom he refuses to talk to in his town. His sister is pre pubescent, so she has unlikely developed the body of a woman and also, she shows improbable signs of having sexual urges by asking him if she is his girl and if he will love [her] always (140). By observing the problems Krebs has with his own family members after the war, one can understand why his problems communicating in the outside world, with strangers, exists. It has been said that The Voyage of the Argo, written centuries past The Odyssey, is an imitation or some form of plagiarism of the primary epic poem of ancient Greece. I like the other train of thought; it is more an acknowledgement or tip of the hat, so to speak, specifically to The Odyssey. Both tales center on a hero and a fantastic voyage. The United States became stronger due to economic improvements, the War of 1812 and the westward movements. Part of the reason that the United States became stronger is because of economic improvements. These economic improvements include: the National Bank, the American System, and The First Industrial Revolution. When Alexander Hamilton called 8jmfor a Bank of the United States, he imagined a central bank that would strengthen the national economy. This would allow for the growth in business without relying on exports to increase money. Hamilton argued that the bank would strengthen the government by lending money. The First Bank of the United States brought more strength to the United States money and expanded the economy more than what was expected. Many congressmen claimed that the bank was unconstitutional and supported the North over the South. In 1811, they rejected to restate the charter of the First Bank of the United States. I think that the author does an amazing job portraying his idea without having to tell us very much. This is not to say though, that I agree with his message. Even though there are times where things can be going downhill, generally people will move up throughout their life, rather than falling back. Distance Education Essay Distance Education Distance education is a process that creates and provides access to learning when time and distance separate the source of information and the learners (Zhang, 1998, p.1). Distance education defies time and space and can help create a virtual schoolhouse, or a classroom without walls (Wheat, 1998, p.1). The need to take the distance out of education has not been driven largely by sheer need to bridge physical separations. It has been based mainly on providing access as open as possible to those who are willing to avail themselves of the opportunities education affords them (Tam, 1998, p.3). Distance learning, which is a form of multimedia, depends on a rich interactive environment to foster learning (Hancock, 1999, p.1). The challenge for distance educators is to set up a cognitively rich learning environment to facilitate the distant students construction processes (Zhang, 1998, p.4). Modern distance education is student centered, not teacher centered...distance educators are facilitators of their students education (Markel, 1999, p.3). Learner centric theories focus on the importance of the learner over the instructor to the instructional activity (Leonard, 1999, p.3). The new paradigm [for distance learning] is a more ... Author David Simmons studied color effects more generally in his book, Color and emotion: New directions in color studies. Simmons conducted a lot of experiments trying to prove that color can enhance positive moods. In one of his experiments he asked 56 undergraduate psychology students to paint a white wall with a color that made them to feel positive. The results indicated that yellow, orange and red were picked as the most positive color of the 9 color samples in total. Jacob and Suess (1975) disagree with the general theory that warm colors are more appealing and tend to enhance positive mood. They found that participants shown a more positive mood towards cool colors rather than warm colors. In his article, Effects of four psychological primary colors on anxiety state; Perceptual and motor skills, states that previous studies may have overlooked the effects of colors on standard pencil and paper measures of anxiety. He investigated the effects of primary colors such as: red, yellow, blue and green and the level of anxiety of the participants. The researcher administered the state scale of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory to 40 participants. This is especially true when we re discussing the history of the great game of Bingo, which is littered with vague accounts and wild inconsistencies. Of course the game didn t just spring into being one dark, cold night, as with most things, there was a seed of an idea that evolved and changed over decades before it became the game that we all know and love today. When it comes down to it, Bingo is, above all else, a form of gambling, which has been around in one form or another for thousands of years as a leisure pursuit. All forms of gambling have changed over time as cultures have moved on, but bingo is unlike any other game of chance, because it s arguably more about the community and the sheer fun of the game than the prize. However, it wasn t always that way. The game has its origins in the lottery games that were popular in Europe throughout the 16th century, which were based on the drawing of random numbers (sound familiar?) and basic lucky. The Theory Of Convivencia Between Christians And Muslims Is the theory of convivencia between Christians, Jews and Muslims in Iberia convincing in the first four centuries after 711? 4243296 Word Count: 1904 The theory of convivencia between Christians, Jews and Muslims is considered to be the period in Medieval Spain in which the three Abrahamic religions were able to coexist and live together peacefully. The notion of convivencia not only refers to the overall tolerance of Christians and Jews to be able to practice their religion in Al Andalus, it also incorporates the idea of members of these three faiths sharing a common culture, a language and working towards advancing civilisation through poetry, literature and science. Historians who have studied this issue are largely divided on whether this time period really was as harmonious as it is commonly described. Historians such as Bat Ye or highlight the lack of convivencia by placing emphasis on how leaders of Al Andalus would enforce rules such as granting non Muslims with the status of dhimmi, essentially making them second class citizens which by today s standards would undoubtedly lead to the theory of convivencia being somewhat unpersuasive. For most of us, the sight of it turns the stomach, but in the court of law, blood can tell a lot more about a crime scene than you might think. Forensic bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) is the interpretation of bloodstains for the purpose of reconstructing the events that took place in the case of violent crimes. Using the sciences of fluid dynamics and trigonometry, BPA examiners form opinions about what did or did not happen by examining elements of the stains such as the size, shape, distribution and location of the bloodstains. Following the analysis of the crime scene, BPA examiners then prepare to present often critical evidence to a jury in the court of law. In many cases including here in Australia BPA is essential and pivotal to the investigation and can contribute greatly to the outcome of a criminal trial under South Australian law. Bloodstain Pattern Principals To understand how analysts interpret bloodstains, one must first understand the basic properties of blood. Blood contains both liquid (plasma and serum) and solids (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and proteins). Blood is in a liquid state when inside the body, and when it exits the body, it does so as a liquid. However, this liquid state does not last very long after the blood leaves the body. Except for people with hemophilia, blood will begin to clot within a few minutes, forming a dark, shiny gel like substance that grows more solid as time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. William Faulkner s Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech and its... William Faulkner s Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech and its Relevance William Faulkner s Nobel Prize acceptance speech is a dynamic statement that challenges the writer and man to not simply sit around and watch the end of man, but to help man endure and prevail. Faulkner refuses to accept the naturalists theme that human beings are dominated, controlled, and overwhelmed by their environment and nature. He does not accept the end of man, but rather says that man will prevail. Though many have accepted the easy way out by saying man will simply endure because one can hear his soft, inexhaustible voice even after death, Faulkner also refuses this. He says man will not only endure, but he shall prevail or triumph over death. Man will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eliot. Eliot wrote about man s effort to transcend the force of time and man s effort to achieve the timelessness of the eternal. His writings reflect his own personal themes and direction of his life: the quest for eternal salvation. He believes one can endure and prevail as Faulkner does as evident in The Wasteland . The Wasteland emphasizes the decay of the western civilization, yet there was hope and courage in the writings. Eliot joins William Faulkner in the argument that man controls his own destiny. Along with many other authors, Stephen Crane would disagree with Eliot and Faulkner on their views because he was a naturalistic author. Crane saw human beings as wholly controlled by their environment and their heredity. The Open Boat expresses Crane s naturalistic qualities showing men having no control over their destiny as they are stuck in the ocean and are controlled by the sea. Although Crane is seen as a naturalist writer, he is also seen as a Christian symbolist expressing ultimate understanding of faith and the redemption of people. Robert Frost, like Stephen Crane, also was a naturalist writer and would disagree with Faulkner. He believed man had no free will and man would become the sum of your choices. Frost writes in ordinary speech as Faulkner did in his Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech. Like Frost and Crane, Eugene O Neill also expressed a naturalistic point of view on his writings. • 56. Roald Dahl s Visit To Matilda The Musical On Saturday, September 26, 2015, Sarah, my uncle and I traveled to the Winspear Opera House in downtown Dallas to see Matilda the Musical. Audience members observed the beloved story by Roald Dahl come to life on stage. This is the musical s first national tour filled with an incredibly young and talented cast that draws readers into the story. One exciting detail worth mentioning is I ve had the pleasure of personally meeting two of the talented cast members, Michael Fatica and John Michael Fiumara in 2014 in New York City when they were ensemble members of the Broadway musical Newsies. This cast did an amazing job creating a fun atmosphere while showing excellent musicianship and telling the iconic story. The piece that opens the show is Miracle. This song begins with the children... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She demonstrated very nice diction and did an incredible job at staying in character. The Hammer is the first song in which the audience members are introduced to the hilarious Miss Trunchbull. Interestingly, Miss Trunchbull s character is played by a male tenor and she/he is an absolute blast to watch! He did an excellent job in staying in falsetto and adding vibrato. Bruce is a song that highlights one of the most well known scenes in the book in which Bruce gets in trouble for eating a piece of Miss Trunchbull s cake and therefore must to eat the entire cake. Telly is performed by Mr.Wormwood, Matilda s dad, in which he pokes fun at people who read instead of watching television. This hilarious number was executed perfectly by the actor. He had great sliding notes and made the number very fun to experience. When I Grow Up is a beautiful song that sends a heartwarming message with its sweet melody. One thing that astounded me was that the actors were singing while sitting and standing on moving swings. Not only did they have nice diction, they maintained excellent phrasing along with crescendos and decrescendos. Quiet and My House are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 57. Metropolitan Avenue And The Victorian Era 724 Metropolitan Avenue, which was where I now lived. The three storey champaign house with a total of twelve bedrooms, six large bathrooms and six small. The expensive house was decorated in the theme of the Victorian era from the 1830s to 1901, with the main palette consisting of exquisite and aristocratic furnitures contrasting with pale walls. The furnitures were predominantly decorative delicate flowers exquisite beauty but equally splendid. Olivia liked the shades of red and purple, Edward favored paler colors and dark green, so it was pretty much depending on the area in the house that which colors were the dominant one. The house also had a small garden where Olivia grew her small vines below a steel framework, over the years, they formed a small vergola on the corner of the garden, we often sat under it, read on pleasant summer days or drank hot chocolate on cold winter days, with a small flame we would grill marshmallows, enjoying the sweet taste of milk, sugar and vanilla melting on the tip of our tongues. I pushed the front door open, and the scented warmth engulfed me with delighted glee. Obviously Olivia and Edward were busily preparing for the Thanksgiving dinner, so there would be no lunch at all but chocolate chip cookies and nonfat milk. I greeted them rather half heartedly and went to my own quiet attic, eager to finish the last few chapters of Breaking Dawn and to move on to The Outsider. Olivia did mention about my note stating that I would be back ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 58. Character Change In Macbeth In the play Macbeth, William Shakespeare showcases throughout the story as the main character Macbeth slowly changes in consciousness through his conquest for power. Shakespeare manages to portray their change in character through excitement associated with external action. Shakespeare shows through the course of the play as Macbethchanges from loyal general of King Duncanas he transitions to the tyrant king who will do anything to have his way. At first, Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth, plot to murder King Duncan in hopes of becoming the next king because of a prophecy that was foretold by three witches. To further emphasize on this change at the beginning of the play, it is not Macbeth who presents the idea of murdering King... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This enforces the idea that Macbeth has a guilty conscience and understands no matter how hard he tries he will not be able to clean his hands of this wrongful deed. After the murder of King Duncan Macbeth s guilt starts to eat away at him a dagger of the mind, a false creation (II.I.50). This shows that Macbeth is becoming aware of his dark nature within himself. the dagger scene shows criminality becomes a field for phenomenological speculation in the play (Curran). This point by Curran emphasizes as to how Shakespeare slowly introduces how Macbeth will slowly have a change in heart. As the play goes on, Macbeth is having mixed thoughts about every minor detail as he regrets things that he already set out to do, but he understands that he must carry out these malicious deeds for the prophecies to become true. As the story progresses, Macbeth becomes more and more paranoid as one of the prophecies the three witches prophesied that Banquo s descendants will be kings. Macbeth realizes that his ownership of the crown may be short because he does not know when Banquo s prophecy will come true, so he plots to kill Banquo they hailed him father to a line of kings upon my head they placed a fruitless crown (III.I.65 66). Macbeth realizes that his reign as king will have no impact compared to Banquo s descendants. This shows that Macbeth has fully changed in character from loyal general to tyrant king.
