The kidney controls the production of urine through three main processes:
1) Glomerular filtration - The glomerulus filters blood in the kidneys, allowing fluid and dissolved substances to pass into the nephron tubules.
2) Reabsorption - Most of the filtered fluid and substances are reabsorbed back into blood vessels in the tubules. This regulates fluid levels and waste removal.
3) Tubular secretion - The tubules actively transport certain substances from blood into the urine.
Together these processes determine the volume, concentration and composition of the final urine to maintain fluid balance and remove waste from the body.
