This document discusses power line communication technologies and KEMET Electronics' pulse transformers for high definition power line communication. It provides information on: 1) The intention of HD-PLC is to enable high-speed communication over power lines for applications like smart metering, smart streetlights, and the Internet of Things. 2) The applicable CENELEC EN 50561-1 standard protects radio services and allows full-speed PLC when radio is not detected. 3) KEMET Electronics' new PLT pulse transformer series is designed for HD-PLC with a flat insertion loss for stable signal modulation across bandwidths up to 240Mbps.

Intention of HD PLC
• Power line communication uses the mains supply to
communicate (see pictures) for up to 240Mbps
• Smart metering information broadcasted to energy
providers for consumption, malfunction, sabotage
• Smart streetlights is a target market also to include
EV/HEV chargers and broadcast for payments etc.
• Conventional home networks, smart home, high speed
communication and IoT solutions of any kind
• The technology is superior above wireless
communication at high distances and avoid interference

Applicable standard CENELEC EN 50561-1
• CENELEC EN 50561-1 is an European Standard for Electromagnetic
Compatibility for PLC products (established 2012)
• Radio broadcast services are dynamically protected when the bands
are detected and notches are inserted in the bandwidth and no digital
communication is present when radio is detected
• If no radio is present PLC can operate at full speed without notching

Application demands for signal modulation
• Pulse transformers with a stable and low insertion
loss are needed to have the same signal level
modulated to mains throughout the whole bandwidth
• Depending which topology is used 2 or 3 pulse
transformers are needed.
• The insertion loss links to the signal to noise ration
and the lower the influence of the transformer the
higher the communication speed is possible
