In DC-Link capacitors the ESR is constant in the range 2KHz – 50KHz, so
we can simply consider the total Irms instead of the harmonic composition
in order to calculate the Power Dissipation.
• Rth = Thermal resistance
• PD = Power dissipated
• ESR = Equivalent Series Resistance @ 10KHz

Life Calculation Example for DC Link
• The DC link capacitor in a converter shall provide an Irms current of 60A at 990V / 10kHz. Capacitance of
around 500uF and temperature around 55°C - Life time 100 khrs.
1) Calculation of the ripple voltage: Urms = 60A / (2π * 10000 Hz * 500 μF) = 1.9 V
2) Calculation of Undc: Undc = 990 + (1.9 * √2) = 992.7 V
3) For DC application our range C44U is the best choice and we choose the C44U 1100V
4) Irms application = 60A < 90A → OK
5) ESR = 1.1 mOhm, Rth = 3.4 °C/W
6) P = ESR * Irms ^ 2 = 1.1 mOhm * 60 ^ 2 = 4.0 W
7) Ths = Tamb + (Rth * P) = 55 + (3.4 * 4.0) = 68.6 °C
8) 68.6°C < 70°C max reference temperature → OK

C44P-R AC Filter: Safety Device activation
The expansion of the internal oil causes the elongation
of the can and the disconnection of the wire.
The oil expansion limit the maximum hotspot at 80°C
NOTICE: Care should be taken to ensure that there
still is electrical clearance of 15 mm between
terminations and other live or earthed parts above the
capacitor, in case of safety device activation

  • 9. 9 C44U series for DC-Link Applications Hot spot calculation 𝑃 𝐷 = 𝐼𝑟𝑚𝑠2 ∗ 𝐸𝑆𝑅 Δ 𝑇 𝐴𝑚𝑏 − 𝐻𝑆 = 𝑃 𝐷 ∗ 𝑅𝑡ℎ 𝑇 𝐻𝑆 = T 𝑎𝑚𝑏 + 𝑅𝑡ℎ * (𝐼𝑟𝑚𝑠2 ∗ 𝐸𝑆𝑅) In DC-Link capacitors the ESR is constant in the range 2KHz – 50KHz, so we can simply consider the total Irms instead of the harmonic composition in order to calculate the Power Dissipation. • Rth = Thermal resistance • PD = Power dissipated • ESR = Equivalent Series Resistance @ 10KHz Input data: Irms, T 𝑎𝑚𝑏 Catalogue data: 𝑅𝑡ℎ , 𝐸𝑆𝑅 Output data: 𝑇 𝐻𝑆 𝑇 𝐻𝑆 = T 𝑎𝑚𝑏 + Δ 𝑇 𝐴𝑚𝑏 − 𝐻𝑆 The hot spot is the internal point of the capacitor where the temperature reaches maximum value. Rth and ESR are listed in the catalogue as a function of cap and Rated Voltage Typical trend
  • 10. 10 Life Calculation Example for DC Link • The DC link capacitor in a converter shall provide an Irms current of 60A at 990V / 10kHz. Capacitance of around 500uF and temperature around 55°C - Life time 100 khrs. 1) Calculation of the ripple voltage: Urms = 60A / (2π * 10000 Hz * 500 μF) = 1.9 V 2) Calculation of Undc: Undc = 990 + (1.9 * √2) = 992.7 V 3) For DC application our range C44U is the best choice and we choose the C44U 1100V 4) Irms application = 60A < 90A → OK 5) ESR = 1.1 mOhm, Rth = 3.4 °C/W 6) P = ESR * Irms ^ 2 = 1.1 mOhm * 60 ^ 2 = 4.0 W 7) Ths = Tamb + (Rth * P) = 55 + (3.4 * 4.0) = 68.6 °C 8) 68.6°C < 70°C max reference temperature → OK
  • 11. 11 Life Calculation Example for DC Link 9) Life Expectancy from Life Time Curve: Voltage ratio 992.7 / 1100 = 0.9 at Ths ≈ 70 °C Result of around 130 khrs → OK

  • 21. 21 C44P-R AC Filter: Safety Device activation The expansion of the internal oil causes the elongation of the can and the disconnection of the wire. The oil expansion limit the maximum hotspot at 80°C NOTICE: Care should be taken to ensure that there still is electrical clearance of 15 mm between terminations and other live or earthed parts above the capacitor, in case of safety device activation
