St. Joan of Arc was a Catholic saint and patron saint of France who helped lead the French army to victory against English occupation in the 15th century. As a young peasant girl, she began hearing voices of saints telling her to help the king free France from English rule. At age 16, the voice of God instructed her to join the army. Shortly after becoming their leader, she led the French army to victory. However, in 1431 jealous soldiers turned her over to the enemy. After a trial where she was found guilty, she was burned at the stake at age 19. Twenty-four years later, she was declared innocent and recognized as a martyr.
