St. Nicholas was orphaned at a young age but inherited great wealth, which he used to help the poor. He became a priest and later the Bishop of Myra. As Bishop, St. Nicholas was imprisoned for his Christian beliefs, where he endured torture through prayer. He was also known to have calmed a great storm at sea while traveling to the Holy Lands, earning his reputation as the protector of sailors. Today, St. Nicholas is celebrated on December 6th and remembered for bringing gifts to children on Christmas.
