Saint Rose of Lima was born in Lima, Peru in 1586 and died there in 1617. She was known for her piety and charity, helping the sick in her community and working to support her family through needlework and flower sales. Inspired by Saint Catherine of Siena, she performed acts of penance like fasting and hairshirt wearing. There are churches and parks dedicated to her memory in locations like Sacramento, California. She was beatified in 1667 and canonized in 1671, becoming the first saint from the Americas.
