Joan of Arc was born in a French commune called Domrémy in 1412. Her parents were tenant farmers,
JacquesD’ArcandIsabelleRomée,andshe wasthefourthof fivesiblings. She grewupduringtheHundred
Years’ War, an eventthat became extremelymeaningful inherstory. Divine guidance convincedthe girl
that her life missionwastoleadthe French army throughthe war and save France from the English.Her
devotion gave herthe strengthtofulfillhergoal butalsocausedhertodie.Yearslatershe was canonized
and she is known today as Saint Joan of Arc, patroness of soldiers and France. [1]
Voices and visions
Joan of Arc was raised Catholic and lived a life of faith. When she was 12 or 13 years old, she believed
heard heavenly voices. These voices from St. Michael, St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Margaret of
Antioch, claimed and urged her to live her faith. She believed what they told her and followed their
counsel. Moreover, the voices were preparing her for a mission, which was to liberate France from the
English. Joan’s faith inspired many of them to believe in themselves and trust that they could drive the
English out of France. She encouraged them to live it strictly, without prostitutes in the French army to
protect the faith of her soldiers and provided them with ways to do so as they traveled with her from
battle to battle.She reliedheavilyonherfaithuntil the final daysand hoursof her life.Because she was
terrified of being burned at the stake, which ultimately became her fate.
Hundred Years’ War
The HundredYears' War was one of the most significantconflictsof the Middle Ages.For 116 years, five
generations of kings from two rival dynasties fought for the throne of the largest kingdom in Western
Europe.The appearance of Joan of Arc at the Siege of Orléans strengthenedthe spiritof the French.The
Englishlaidsiege to Orléans in1428, but theirforce was insufficienttocompletelyassumecontrol of the
city. In 1429 Joan persuaded the Dauphin to send her to the siege, saying she had had visions of God
tellinghertoexpel the English. She raisedthe morale of the troops,andtheyattackedthe Englishfortes,
forcing the English to lift the siege. Inspired by Joan, the French took several English strongholds on the
Loire.
The end of her journey
After leading the French army through the Siege of Orléans successfully, Joan gained a lot of support
across France. The English,onthe otherhand,believedthatsuch a younggirl defeatingtheirarmymust
have had to do with herbeinga witchor guidedby the devil.Joanhad ledseveral more militaryactions
with flying colors whenshe was captured by the Anglo-Burgundian soldiers and handed over to English
authorities.SomewherearoundFebruary1431 the girl wasput ontrial,acussedof heresy,witchcraftand
cross-dressingwithin 70 otherchargers. The trial lastedclose to three months and eventhoughshe was
claimed guilty of heresy the 29th of May, her sentence was not carried out until the following day. On
May 30, 1431 a crowdof abouttenthousandpeoplewitnessedhow the 19-year-oldgirl whohadbrought
victory and greatness to France was relentlessly burned on the stake. [2]

2. After Joan of Arc
Joan of Arc's legacy goes beyond time and history as she is a symbol for different movements such as
feminism for her way of breaking gender roles in such an ancient time. Religiously speaking she is
considered a saint and a Catholic representative today. She also forms a large part of French art as she
wasrepeatedlyportrayedasanordinaryperson,aswellasportrayedwithheroicfeatures.She isasymbol
of strength and power for many people and many current movements.
