Explorations in Design and Technology: Jigs and Fixtures 
Activity: Using Separating Processes to Produce Identically N aSmiez:ed Parts 
Directions: In this activity, your goal is to design, build, and use jigs and fixtures to produce a quantity of identical parts made out of 
specified materials. The materials process that you will be use is called separating . Separating means that you will remove small 
parts of materials from bigger pieces of standard stock. The types of separating processes you will use is: Sawing, Cutting, and 
Induced Fracture (cutting glass and acrylic) 
*Hint = The parts you make will be used in the electrical magnetic engine activity!!! 
Problem #1 (Starting) Upon completion of this activity, you will Design, Build, and Use Jigs and Fixtures to control a tool 
and/or work piece during manufacturing processing. 
1. Acquire the materials to be used in this activity 
2. Before you begin cutting any materials, you must first determine the sizes and quantity of the parts you will be cutting. You will 
need to know the sizes of the parts before you begin designing the jigs and fixtures. Remember, you will be using the parts you cut 
for determining the properties of materials in a later activity. 
3. The sixes for the finished parts of each material will be: (See Instructorfor materials and sizes) 
Material:

(T = Thickness W = Width L = Length) 
4. The parts must be cut to these dimensions so that they can be utilized for the electrical magnetic motor 
Problem #2 (Finishing) Question and Answer 
How well did your jig or fixture work? 
(If the jig or fixture does not work correctly, you will need to adjust or redesign.) 
Did all of the parts get cut to the desired length? 
(Measure the length of all parts to make sure they are the correct sizes) 
Can your jig or fixture be adjusted to cut larger parts? How much larger? 
Why is it important to have knowledge about manufacturing processes when designing jigs and fixtures?

Activity: Jigs and Fixtures 
Using Separating Processes to Produce Identically Sized Parts: 
In manufacturing a product, standard stock materials are cut and or machined to the required sizes. The required sizes are specified by 
working drawings of the product being made. In continuous line manufacturing many identical parts are produced. 
Jigs and Fixtures: 
Identically sized and shaped parts can be made using special types of production tooling called jigs and fixtures. Jigs and fixtures are 
often fastened to machines. A JIG is a device used to hold a part being made and to guide a cutting tool. A FIXTURE is a device used 
to hold a part in place while it is being machined or assembled. 
Directions: Take the time to discuss and brainstorm the type of jig or fixture that you are going to construct. Then design a 
3-dimensional drawing that identifies the overall sizes of your object. When you have finished with the sketch of your 
design, get it approved by the instructor and gather the materials needed to construct your jig or fixture. 
Show all dimensions showing: (Length x Width x Height) Identify in inches the sizes that you will use to construct your object

Directions: To help you keep track of the parts, prepare a Bill of Materials (BOM) by recording the information 
below. Complete the following…

*Safety Note: All cutting tools are sharp and will cut more more than the part being made. Keep your hands away from all cutting edges and wear safety glasses at all times!

Explorations in Design and Technology: Jigs and Fixtures Activity: Using Separating Processes to Produce Identically N aSmiez:ed Parts Directions: In this activity, your goal is to design, build, and use jigs and fixtures to produce a quantity of identical parts made out of specified materials. The materials process that you will be use is called separating . Separating means that you will remove small parts of materials from bigger pieces of standard stock. The types of separating processes you will use is: Sawing, Cutting, and Induced Fracture (cutting glass and acrylic) *Hint = The parts you make will be used in the electrical magnetic engine activity!!! Problem #1 (Starting) Upon completion of this activity, you will Design, Build, and Use Jigs and Fixtures to control a tool and/or work piece during manufacturing processing. 1. Acquire the materials to be used in this activity 2. Before you begin cutting any materials, you must first determine the sizes and quantity of the parts you will be cutting. You will need to know the sizes of the parts before you begin designing the jigs and fixtures. Remember, you will be using the parts you cut for determining the properties of materials in a later activity. 3. The sixes for the finished parts of each material will be: (See Instructorfor materials and sizes) Material: Dimensions: _________ x _________ x _________ (T = Thickness W = Width L = Length) 4. The parts must be cut to these dimensions so that they can be utilized for the electrical magnetic motor Problem #2 (Finishing) Question and Answer How well did your jig or fixture work? (If the jig or fixture does not work correctly, you will need to adjust or redesign.) Did all of the parts get cut to the desired length? (Measure the length of all parts to make sure they are the correct sizes) Can your jig or fixture be adjusted to cut larger parts? How much larger? Why is it important to have knowledge about manufacturing processes when designing jigs and fixtures?

Explorations in Design and Technology Activity: Jigs and Fixtures Using Separating Processes to Produce Identically Sized Parts: In manufacturing a product, standard stock materials are cut and or machined to the required sizes. The required sizes are specified by working drawings of the product being made. In continuous line manufacturing many identical parts are produced. Jigs and Fixtures: Identically sized and shaped parts can be made using special types of production tooling called jigs and fixtures. Jigs and fixtures are often fastened to machines. A JIG is a device used to hold a part being made and to guide a cutting tool. A FIXTURE is a device used to hold a part in place while it is being machined or assembled. Directions: Take the time to discuss and brainstorm the type of jig or fixture that you are going to construct. Then design a 3-dimensional drawing that identifies the overall sizes of your object. When you have finished with the sketch of your design, get it approved by the instructor and gather the materials needed to construct your jig or fixture. Show all dimensions showing: (Length x Width x Height) Identify in inches the sizes that you will use to construct your object
  • 4. Explorations in Design and Technology Activity: Jigs and Fixtures Directions: To help you keep track of the parts, prepare a Bill of Materials (BOM) by recording the information below. Complete the following… -”Bill of Materials”- Materials Dimensions (L x W x H) Quantity Tool/Equipment Power / Hand Tool Quantity *Safety Note: All cutting tools are sharp and will cut more more than the part being made. Keep your hands away from all cutting edges and wear safety glasses at all times!
  • 5. Explorations in Design and Technology Jigs and Fixtures: “Summary Report” Name: Hour: Directions: Answer the following questions!!! 1. Define a JIG? 2. Why do we use jigs? 3. What types of materials could be manufactured using your jig? 4. Does your jig work? Yes / No (Why?) 5. How does using the 5 steps of problem solving help you complete this project? 6. What type of material did you have to manufacture? 7. What were the dimensions? (L= W= H=) 8. How many parts did your jig create in one class period? 9. While manufacturing your work piece were there any imperfections with your product? (WHY!) 10. Identify how a jig helps improve the manufacturing process? (What does it allow you to do?)
