The Silmarillion Chapter Summary
Thus Douglas Charles Kane sets forth the inspiration for his meticulous review of the origin of the text
Christopher Tolkien presented in 1977 as The Silmarillion. I confess that I myself belonged to the
second group, until the publication of The History of Middle earth volumes revealed the extent of the
evolution of the Legendarium. Christopher has presented that evolution roughly in a chronological
format, with The Book of Lost Tales containing Tolkien s earliest writings and The War of the Jewels
the latest concerning the tales of The Silmarillion. Anyone interested in following the development of
a single tale, therefore, must work through portions of multiple volumes. Kane, who calls The
Silmarillion arguably his most important work (23), set out to show how Christopher, with the
assistant of Guy Gavriel Kay, put together what has become the settled text of The Silmarillion. Kane
proceeds through The Silmarillion chapter by chapter, showing the source within The History of
Middle earth for each paragraph. [Additionally, he referred rarely to Unfinished Tales, The Children of
Húrin, and, in at least one instance, Tolkien s letters (25).] Each chapter of Kane s book contains a
table detailing his findings. For example, for Chapter 13 Of the Return of the Noldor, paragraph 1 was
taken from the later Quenya paragraph 88, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only do we lose a fuller understanding of two female characters, we lose insight into Tolkien s
thoughts about Elven death. Kane posits that Christopher was concerned about the book s length, but
nevertheless considers this choice in particular to be a great loss to The

Paperless Tickets
As a sports fan, what do you think of paperless tickets to attend a sporting event?
I believe paperless tickets are useful, considering that it provides a new, efficient, and alternative way
to accelerate the process of validating your ticket at a venue. I recently had an experience with
paperless tickets when I went to the Knicks vs. Wizards games about two weeks ago. Before attending
the game I had the tasks of printing out the tickets that my friend paid for. On the TicketMaster site,
the option paperless tickets pop up in which we received our tickets via electronically. It definitely
was a different process for me, as I have never obtained paperless tickets before, but the process of
obtaining the ticket was smooth. The ticket takers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is definitely bad on the venue and ticketing system, as what if the customer had some random
emergency and needed to sell their ticket for they cannot attend the game? This decreases the
reputation of the ticketing system, as they do not value the customer needs. They also do not provide
different options other than transferring the ticket. In other words, ticket outlets like TicketMaster
essentially own your ticket in which the customer is not in control. This can also result in negative
press for paperless tickets, as they do not allow refunds or the reselling of your

Court Standards, Rules, and Regulations
THE STANDARDS USED TO DETERMINE EXPERT WITNESSES In the legal foundation of the
courts, the courts are typically known for prohibiting witnesses from offering testimony based upon
opinions of their own or even their own analysis. Courts, however, are more lenient when it comes to
including testimony by expert witnesses that provide testimony that falls within the realm of their own
expertise. Cornell University Law School state that, in general terms, expert witnesses are provided
the ability to testify about the opinions of a case given that their analysis that they use can be
determined as scientifically sound (n.d.). It is, however, important to identify that there are standards
to which expert witnesses are determined and that there are federal rules designed to that of the use of
expert witnesses and the standards behind their inclusion as well as the information that they are
allowed to claim knowledge to. These federal rules are listed under the Federal Rules of Evidence
under Article VII: Opinions and Expert Testimony (Rule 701 706); these, however, are not to be
confused with the previous article which is Article VI: Witnesses, which contain rules 601 615 about
witnesses used within court as a general basis of information (Committee on the Judiciary House of
Representatives, 2013). To provide a simple understanding of Rules 701 706, these rules show that an
expert witness or an expert who is qualified, is granted the ability to provide their opinion to assist

Military Leadership Style Paper
From a previous class, Management of organizational change we accepted the task of the Leadership

From some additional research on the subject of leadership I uncovered an interesting article that was

Tillie Olsen s Yonnondio Essay
Tillie Olsen s Yonnondio
In contrast to many other Depression era novels, in which the teamwork of the common man is seen as
society s glue, Tillie Olsen s Yonnondio looks with great admiration at one family s struggle to keep
above water. Through the travails of a coal mining/farming family, Anna Holbrook becomes the one
constant in a society that turns man against himself, and where fortune is evanescent.
The thirst for something stable is evident as the children show their awe of the physical world. As an
adult explains the stars to Mazie, Olsen writes: As his words misted into the night and disappeared,
she scarcely listened‹only the aura over them of timelessness, of vastness, of eternal things that had ...

With his comment, Olsen shows how the two worlds, country and city, are fundamentally separated.
This is further emphasized when the teacher scolds Mazie: Perhaps you indulged in rough play of this
nature where you come from, but we do not permit it here, nor does it go unpunished. (50 1)
The lack of cooperation between men is shown as Jim s young, single work partner quits in protest of
unfair conditions. Jim is keeps his fury silent: Alright for him to talk, alright with nothing more
important to worry about than getting canned up and stepping out a floosieÅ he couldn t see what was
really around and he believed the bull about freedomofopportunityÅ and something about pursuit of
happiness. (62) Olsen s condensation of the maxims of our country shows their value as clichés and
their disconnection with the Holbrooks. The proper method living lies with the ants Erina observes:
Watch the little antsÅ Dont hurt their houses. They have to hurry and work so hard and carry heavy
things and I sees them carry each other sometime. (120)

American Agriculture Needs a Free-Market System Essay
American Agriculture Needs a Free Market System
The words to the famous old children s song Old MacDonald Had a Farm are due for a revision. The
new lines should read Old MacDonald had a farm . . . with a lawyer here, and an accountant there, and
everywhere a new federal program and regulation. Not quite as poetic, but definitely more
appropriate. The current state of agribusiness consists of an incredibly complex mix of subsidies, price
supports, and bureaucratic regulations that could confound the most knowledgeable business minds.
Underlying this tangled web of rules and regulations are political battles that pit normally allied
groups against each other, and bring normally adversarial groups into allegiance. One bizarre ... Show

However, by the late sixties and early seventies the percentage had climbed to 20%, and in 1987 direct
payments totaled 30% of net farm income (Rapp, 1988).
Now, most economists will tell you that government control of prices simply does not work.
Artificially high prices provide an incentive for an efficient producer to undercut the price to grab a
larger share of the market. This wasn t the only problem. Besides trying to control the power of the
free market, the government faced another uncontrollable force: the weather. Agriculture, being
entirely dependent on the whims of Mother Nature, and therefore an industry where accurate forecasts
of production are nearly impossible, is not suited to long range price fixing schemes. Thus, the 1950s
saw the abandonment of price supports and the introduction of income supports.
Early in the twentieth century, our leaders believed that the vitality of our agri cultural base was vital
to our national interest, and as the most abundant country in the world there was no reason to expect
that we would lose that vitality. But the Great Depression changed that perception. Since the
depression, it has been the continuing policy of the government, Republican and Democratic
administrations alike, to support the

The Court Of Appeals Of Maryland
I: Case
The Court of Appeals of Maryland Number 69 September Term, 2012.
Glenn Joseph Raynor v. State of Maryland. Case number 12 K 08 001527. Argued: April 8, 2014.
Decided: August 27, 2014
II. Case Summary This appeal evolved out of a 2006 rape case that occurred in Harford county
Maryland. More than two years after the incident the victim identified Glenn Joseph Raynor, hereby
known as petitioner, as a possible suspect. After departing a voluntary police interview in which
petitioner ultimately declined a request for his DNA to be collected for comparison. Investigators
collected DNA on swabs from the armrest of his chair. DNA analysis revealed a match from samples
collected at the crime scene. After further investigation petitioner was charged and convicted of first
degree rape and related offenses. Petitioner challenged his conviction based on Fourth Amendment
grounds contending that the collection and analysis of his DNA from the chair constituted an unlawful
search as it violated his expectation of privacy (Sternstein, 2014). According to Raynor v. State 2014
to ascertain whether this conduct is a search under the Fourth Amendment two conditions must be
satisfied:
1) a defendant must demonstrate an actual subjective expectation of privacy in the item or place
searched and
2) Prove that the expectation is one that society is prepared to recognize as objectively reasonable.
Upon appeal during oral arguments petitioner further specified it was not the

Display Rules Research Paper
Projection of emotion is an essential aspect of communication in society to express one thought
regarding situation given. Yet, this expression of inner thought can be regulated as it is projected
towards audiences. It is processed to substitute the expression that needs to be verbalised or
showncalled display rules. Ekman and Friesen (1969) defined display rules as control over displayed
emotion through corrective etiquettes. The nature of display rules can be categorised by two distinct
principles behind the use of it, the first one being pro social and the other is self protective (Saarni,
1981). Ekman and Friesen (1969) wrote guideline about different reasons behind the use of display
rules, most of the time people are pushed by cultural display rules and need of the moment. Cultural

Children are shown to be able to replace facial expressions as well verbal expressions. Test has been
done to group of children ranging from 5 14 years old by Gnepp and Hess (1986) as well Harris,
Olthof, and Tergwort (1981) on children with different range of age. Several similar research has been
done differently throughout different cultures as to understand ability of children to use display rules
and conceal their emotions. The use of display rules is expected to increase as the children tested is
from older group as has been researched through experiments such as Australian children test done by
Choy (2007); Caroll and Steward (1984). One of the main discussion of display rules on children is
when do they started to learn the use of display rules as well as the earlier development of it, whether
facial or verbal display being understood first. Saarni (1979a) found that it was facial display rules,
but there are thesis and experiment that show the other way round and children are more capable to

Workers During The 1900s S
Workers in the 1870s to 1930s Throughout history many people, such as politicians, officials, and
generals, have been noted to have molded the United States, neglecting the fact that workers have also
played an important role in shaping this nation s history. During the 1870s to the 1930s, laborers faced
many hardships; they had trouble keeping their jobs, had their wages decreased, and were forced to
work sixty hour weeks without insurance. Over time, workers began to feel aggravated by their
employers demands and began to voice their opinions. Only by forming into unions and standing up to
what employers thought was freedom in the workplace were the laborers able to change working
conditions more favorable for them. Early in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eventually the workers began to protest. They went on strikes, formed unions, and even used violence
against the employers. One of the unions called the Knights of Labor, founded in the 1869, fought for
eight hour workdays and wage equality among male, female, black, and white workers. They
participated in many strikes, boycotts, and other activities protesting for workplace freedom. Another
labor union was the American Federation of Labor founded in 1881 consisting of mostly skilled
workers. Formed in 1903, the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and Women s Trade Union
League also played a role in aiding workers, specifically female laborers, to gain work rights. These
labor movements played significant roles in history because they influenced or forced employers to
make changes in the workplace. One of the key issues that workers were fighting for was wages.
During the 1870s to 1920s, employers often lowered the workers wages. For example, when the
legislature of Massachusetts enacted a fifty four hour working limit per week, employers decided to
lower the wages. During the first national labor walkout, laborers protested against employers
decreasing their wages; this event became known as the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. An example of
a successful strike was in New Orleans of 1907, 10,000 dockworkers were able to stop employers
from reducing their wages. In 1912, the Industrial Workers of the World and other workers went on
strike

Carrie White Compare And Contrast
Contrasting the house De Palma made into an uncanny character of its own, this house is nice looking
and spacious; its yard and street are fertile and well maintained; the walls appear freshly painted and
light colored; the furniture is pleasingly organized and equipped for company; and condemnatory male
religious icons don t border the female residents and shimmer down at them as they did in the
previous version. Although some of the events that take place in the household are far from normal,
the film gives no indication that Carrie is not in a healthy environment. By highlighting the normality
of Carrie s living conditions the director removes the focus off of the mother daughter relations.
In the original version, there was a sense of self hatred, but in the latest version, that self hatred is
magnified. Margaret White s self harm in the original version seemed like a ploy to increase the fear
of her daughter. However, in Pierce s version anytime she is on screen in the new edition it raises ...

The original version did a perfect job of making Carrie White look weak, but in the latest version, she
appears the opposite. Her being weak in the beginning made the audience feel more sympathetic to her
situation at home. Margaret White in the newer version seemed to be the weakest character in the film,
and thirty minutes into the film Carrie White is already sassing back to her mother. Also, Carrie White
disregards her curfew while she was out looking for dresses in the film leaving her mother worried
sick. Her actions in the film don t seem like an adolescent that is afraid of her mother. Rarely are there
scenes in Pierce s film where Carrie shrinks at the sound of her mother raising her voice and abusing
her. In this film, it seems as if Carrie is controlling her mother. Again, the director wants to remove the
aspect of her mother being a bully at home to focus on the bullies at

The Story Of The Wolf
A wolf walked out of the alpha s den and to the nervous crowd, sadly shook his head, No, he said, Our

alpha was old, but he was a wise leader. He expanded our territory to where no wolf thought possible.
May his spirit have eternal peace. Her gaze scanned the pack and happily changed the subject. Now,

will find powers, he thought, but maybe not my own powers to be exact.
The Earth below the clouds was in its daily nighttime. The spirit wolf pack always continued sleep,
though they really didn t need to. Just inside the range of their senses, Alpha Night Shadow slowly,
and stealthily, crept up until he was beside them. Carefully, he stole their amulets from around their

Out of their range, he put on all six powers amulets and tried each power one by one. First, he tried

Shadow trotted to a nearby dark cloud and lifted his head, letting out a sharp, ear shattering howl. As
he howled, he raised his voice louder and louder. The thunder was so loud it was almost able to shake

Best Water Hydration
What s The Best Water for Hydration (different types of water)
Staying hydrated, is so important, that many professionals recommend that you start, and end, your
day with water, to balance out the amount you lose while sleeping. You lose water when you breathe,
sweat, and urinate, and you lose much more when you are active. Many people underestimate the
amount of fluids that they lose from perspiration; for example, if you exercise for an hour, you can
lose up to a quart of fluids from sweating. Dehydration occurs, when there is more fluid moving out of
cells, than being taken in. Not only will you experience a dry mouth, and increased thirst, your
symptoms may include dizziness, confusion, weakness, fainting, or heart palpitations. Dehydration ...

Catcher In The Rye Salinger s Legacy
He was a literary giant despite his really small body of works and reclusive lifestyle. His most famous
and innovative novel, The Catcher in the Rye, set a new course for literature in post WW2 America
and vaulted Salinger to the heights of literary fame. JD Salinger s Holden Caulfield, the main
character of his novel, is to the 20th century the unforgettably haunting voice of the adolescent at odds
with a very troubling world. Holden is an unhappy, rich and lost boy who has done a bunk from his

above taking a bus tour of Niagara Falls. He loved ballet and he was enthusiastic about the ballet,

That same year, Salinger lamented that only two people had ever truly known him as person: his son,
Matthew, and his beloved dog, Benny, the dog that Salinger had brought home from Germany in 1946
and who had died nearly thirty years before. For a moment, Salinger seriously considered abandoning

Ex Conscientious Objectors In Ww1
Bread was not rationed, but by law had to be sold by weight and not by the loaf. Even so, the
government took steps to decrease its consumption further by banning the sale of bread until twelve
hours after it had been baked. The government decided that fresh bread was very difficult to cut thinly
so, if everyone cut their loaves in thick slices, they would consume more. Additionally, the more
appetising taste of fresh baked bread could encourage people to eat it immoderately. Plans were put in
place to substitute the established white loaf with a national loaf made from wholemeal grain. It is a

Pros And Cons Of Wal-Mart s Abuse Of Power
As the largest retailer in United State s history, Wal Mart attracts both praise and criticism. According
to the company website, Wal Mart sells more than $400 billion worth of goods a year and employees

being predatory and therefore pushing out competing businesses. Because Wal Mart is extremely
large, it has become a price setter for both sellers and competition. Furthermore, to maintain Wal Mart

about Wal Mart is negative. Wal Mart also offers the less affluent a place to shop within their means,

almost half the profit. While, increasing wages would lower turnover costs, it seems unlikely that Wal

parties; this is also unlikely to happen. For progress to occur, the government would need to separate
itself from corporations and refuse contributions and lobbyists. This will not happen, as the
government not only benefits from corporations contributions but also the taxes. If Wal Mart was
more harshly monitored and regulated, then it would likely not have the same income, and their taxes
would be less. This would also hurt America as a whole. Wal Mart and its relationship to the
government makes progress and change difficult, as the situation is complex and interconnected. For
Wal Mart to improve its negative aspects, there would have to be an overhaul in the

The Age Of War And Displacement By Simon Wiesenthal
In the Age of War and Displacement is characterized by imperialism, nationalism, racism, and power.
In an era of both freedom and confinement, Simon Wiesenthal describes his experience of the
Holocaust, which is used to analyze, what it means to be human. After World War One (WWI), the
Germans lost, Hitler assumed authority and began to blame the Jews for what happened in WWI
(Bingle). Within a few months, Germans started to believe Hitler that they were the master race or
supermen, and had no trouble committing genocide of any group Hitler labeled as bad or subhuman .
The Sunflower, address the nature and task of human but also gives a Jewish perspective of
Humanness . Wiesenthal asks, Were we truly all made of the same stud? If so, why were some
murderers and other victims? Was there in fact any personal relationship between us, between the
murderers and their victims, between our camp commandant, Wilhaus, and a tortured Jews
(Wiesenthal 7)? Nationalism is key characteristic in the 20th century and Germany was the primary
country to demonstrate this, with National Socialism. Germans showed their patriotism and loyalty to
their country and fellow citizens. National Socialism affected many Germans... [it] was for them the
fulfillment of their dearest wishes. It lifted them out of their insignificance. That is should come to
power at the expense of innocent victims did not worry them (Wiesenthal 91). For the Jews, the
human experience was to be treated like a person

Good Communication Is Effective Communication
Good communication is effective communication; it provides direction, a clear goal, and encourages
the flow of ideas. Successful communication is achieved through a variety of methods, but most
importantly, it begins with a foundation of security and trust within the team. Successful
Communication
Over the past few weeks my group has been using our group discussion board as our primary method
of communication. Since beginning our power point project we have been posting updates, questions
and simple check ins to see how each member of the group is coming along with their portion of the
PowerPoint assignment. Our key to success has been because of our communication; this is especially
important because we are a virtual group. We touch base with each other regularly for multiple
reasons, the first being the need to establish a relationship.
In contrast to teams who meet face to face on a regular basis, we cannot pick up on non verbal clues
that are expressed through body language, nor are we able to establish an emotional connection with
one another; with that being said, we must maintain regular contact in order to build a rapport.
Secondly, regular communication allowed us to report progress and drawbacks that may hinder our
success. Moreover, scheduling regular periods of communication enforced accountability by
instituting periodic milestones of progress.
In previous experiences I have had working in collaborative groups, in regard to the importance of
communication,

Role Of Phosphorylation Of Second Messenger Dependent On...
1. What is the role of the phosphorylation of GPCRs in the process known as receptor desensitization?
First describe the process, or what is meant, by the term receptor desensitization. What does it mean
when we say that the receptor is uncoupled versus down regulation of the receptor? Define and
contrast the roles of the second messenger dependent protein kinases versus the G protein coupled
receptor kinases in the process of receptor desensitization. What do the terms homologous versus
heterologous desensitization refer to? (Ferguson, Pharmacological Reviews 53:1 24, 2001;
Gainetdinov et al., Annual Review of Neuroscience 27:107 144, 2004; Vasudevan et al., Cell Cycle

This process called the uncoupled . Down regulation means the receptor mRNA and protein synthesis
decrease and the preexisting receptor degradation. The uncouple and down regulation are both
involved in the receptor desensitization, but in different steps. These steps are following described.
First, the receptor uncouple from heterotrimeric G proteins; Second, cell surface receptors internalize
into intracellular membranous compartments; Third, receptor mRNA and protein synthesis decrease
result in the down regulation of the total cellular complement of receptors, as well as both the
lysosomal and plasma membrane degradation of pre existing receptors. There are two generally
kinases which are G protein coupled receptor kinase GRKs and second messenger dependent protein
kinases(e.g., PKA and PKC). The G protein coupled receptor kinase only act on the phosphorylate
agonist activate receptor. For example, GRK family members work on activated receptors, and then
promote the binding of cytosolic arrestins, which sterically uncouple the receptor from heterotrimeric
G protein. In contrast, second messenger dependent proteins kinases act on both phosphorylate agonist
activated GPCRs and other phosphorylates receptors that have not been exposed to agonist. Thus,
agonist independent phosphorylation can only happen with the second messenger dependent protein
kinases, but GRKs cannot do it. When we recognize the

Response To The Jesus I Never Knew By Philip Yancey
Response to The Jesus I Never Knew the Jesus I Never Knew, by Philip Yancey, was a lot more
interesting than I was expecting. When I first read the plot, or summary, on the back of the book itself,
I begin to wonder what this book what relate to me in what way. As I continued to dig deeper in the
marvelous writing of Philip Yancey, I instantly began to relate to his occurrences, and remembering of
Jesus as a young child. Just as I begin to read the first chapter, I noticed Yancey referred to Jesus as the
nurturer in his Christian walk. As children we always have an imagination of what Jesus is and ours
were very similar. He is the man we run to when there is no one there to comfort us in our valleys. As
Yancey continues, he begins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But his appearance is not what made people want to follow Him, and listen to what Jesus had to say,
because what he said, need to be heard by the people on this earth.
Yancey brings Sermon on the Mount, in to perspective and breaks down what we think is something to
look up to in our lives, but then talks as if, this day in time, the things we should be doing as
Christians is somehow hard to do. To summarize, how to be a Christian. How do we compare our lives
to the high expectations. When sometimes we cannot go a day without sin. I don t think Yancey was
bashing the sermon itself, but explaining that sometimes being a Christian is hard, and our
expectations are high. But if we keep our eyes on Jesus in everything we do in life, we will be the best
we can be.
Something we all love about Jesus was his ability to preform miracles on human beings just like us.
Yancey tries to explain why Jesus was on this earth and did the things He did while he was here.
Yancey begins to describe some of the miracles Jesus did like water to wine for example. Then Yancey
questions why some of these miracles were preformed and why some were not. This was hard for me
to understand because I have never thought about this before. Why did some people receive the
blessing of healing and others did not? Honestly, I begin to come up with my own thoughts and begin
to think I cannot compare people that received and people who did not. When we

Personal Narrative On My Converse
Navy blue with silver eyelets, no laces, a white toe cap, and a black racing stripe. What could be so
special about a shoe? To a child, shoes are just something that you sport until your feet bust out of
them, or until you wear holes into them. I was eight years old when my feet stopped growing, when I
got my first pair of converse, and when my shoe obsession began. The first place I took my Converse
was on the third grade trip to Camp Mary Orton. I was nervous about going somewhere new for an
entire week, but my fresh out of the box shoes gave me the confidence to do anything. The muddy
earth no longer daunted me and the idea of climbing a wooden pole named after a diaper company
(the Pamper Pole) did not shake me. The thought of failing to scale a rock wall could not phase the
confidence that my new shoes provided. If the shoes could walk me through the halls of the school,
perfectly matching the plaid of my jumper, then I could handle whatever challenges camp threw at me.
Two years of wear on the already faded blue created a dull black. I forgot about the color they had
once been and began wearing them with everything. At 11, my favorite outfit was a slouchy Hello
Kitty top with black leggings and my distressed blue converse. I wore that outfit when I boarded the

advances in communication. Bob Marley is one of the main influences the spread of Jamaican culture

Marley as an icon for the struggle for justice, peace and human rights 5 not just another musician or

Although opposed to many established governmental policies, Marley was not an anti establishment
advocate. He was an individual that believed governments and everyday people, such as those who
may not be involved in politics, needed to look out for their fellow humans and treat all people equally
regardless of ethnicity and income.
Marley used his music to bring many social issues to the forefront that had previously been
suppressed. Many of these issues were not suppressed because of their nature, but because of the lack
of influence Jamaica had on the world.
The country of Jamaica is highly dependant on tourism and agricultural exports such as raw sugar. By

The Effect Of Daylight And Control On Artificial Light And...
ABSTRACT: Availability of daylight in a building not only improves the well being of an individual
but also plays an important role in reducing our dependence on artificial light and the operational cost
of a building. Daylight if not controlled could cause the major problem of solar heat gain in a building
and thus causing an increase in the air conditioning cost of the building especially in warm climates.
Offices being one of the building categories that need to be well lit regardless of their size and
location, it is important to optimize the daylight and control the heat gain in an office building. This
paper discusses the different daylight strategies to achieve this.
1. INTRODUCTION A room is not a room without natural light. Louis I Khan
Buildings in the residential, commercial and public sectors are responsible for 20 40% of the total
energy consumption in the world [Pérez Lombard, L. Ortiz, J. and Pout, C., (2008)]. Around 70% of
this consumption is spent on artificial light and air conditioning systems [Energy Information

consumption due to HVAC is 39% and lighting is 25%. In countries having warm climates like India

This understanding and pre planning is something that we do during a Pre Deployment Site Survey
(PDSS). From personal experience, I admit that detachments that I have served on weren t as prepared
as Finian. Our PDSS has returned to the detachment with questions left unanswered and I attribute that
to a lack of prior understanding of the environment. If prior research is not conducted to understand
the full spectrum, there is no way that a thorough site survey can occur. This can lead to an ill prepared
deployment and risk damaging rapport with the host nation. Another imperative that Father Finian
displayed was his ability to ensure legitimacy and credibility with the local population. He did so not
by showing up as the educated, knowledgeable, and powerful American, but by making himself a peer
amongst the locals. Finian knew there were three things that had to happen rather quickly: Find a
courageous Catholic, learn the local language, and build an immunity to the local cuisine and water.
Finding another Catholic is an obvious must; however, learning the local language and eating the local
fare is an imperative that Americans are doing less of as the years go by. Learning the language and
eating the food should be an obvious necessity but that s not the case. Some Americans have the
arrogance that English is the superior language of the world and that others should strive to learn it. I
say this because one of those Americans

Essay On Drug Addiction
When a person has a drug addiction, they have a disease that has the ability to affect and hurt the
entire family. Everyone in the addict s immediate family is affected in one way or another. Addiction
impacts a family s finances, physical health as well as psychological wellbeing. It can also cause
tension, miscommunication, and more frequent arguments within a household which in turn creates an
unhealthy environment for everyone involved. The addict can be very unpredictable which can cause
anxiety, emotional pain, stress, and a loss of trust because that person cannot be counted on to follow
through with what they say. Frequently, the people who are addicted don t even realize or believe they
are causing these problems within their families. And unfortunately, they don t view themselves as
sick or suffering from a problem, so they don t reach out for help. When the person finally realizes
they may have a problem, they believe the solution is to escape and run away from their addiction.
In Sonny s Blues, Sonny tells his brother I couldn t tell you when Mama died but the reason I wanted
to leave Harlem so bad was to get away from drugs. And then, when I ran away, that s what I was
running from really. (218) At this point, Sonny is telling his brother he was willing to leave his family
behind to run away from his addiction. But it also shows how misguided he was, or rather all drug
addicts, to think he could just run away from the drugs. Because in the end, he ends

Preparation For A Marching Band
The sport/activity that I have chosen to talk about is marching band. Technically, this would be my
second year doing it but I am looking forward to doing marching band and jazz band later in high
school. So, I have chosen this activity to talk about because it s actually really fun and entertaining.
Many people would watch you, maybe, play one of their favorite songs while walking down the
streets of their hometown. Yea, it could get dark in that town, but it s better to be doing it, than to not.
There are many things to talk about with this sport like preparing, positioning, and errors. To be honest
there are a lot of errors in marching band, and it can get very detailed and confusing.
Preparation for Accomplishment of Activity Preparation for marching band can be fairly simple. First,
you obviously need to get your instrument and start putting it together once in a quiet, non distracting
place. If your instrument is a woodwind, it would do you a whole lot better if you were to wet your
reed. If you have a brass instrument, it would help your ametuar to do some buzzing excersises.
Percussion would be able to manage their 5 stroke roll better and their paradiddles better if they do left
to right and right to left drills. After your instrument is put together, practice your songs. If you ve got
that down, practice marching. Starting with your right foot, and keeping a steady beat. In marching
you have to walk with a steady pace as the rest of your group and/or band. Whilst

Examples Of Betrayal In Macbeth
Betrayal is when the trust between a group of people or two people is broken by lies or deception
harming or ending the relationship. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare Macbeth receives the
unexpected visit from three witches who tell him and his companion Banquo their prophecy, which
unravels the desire of Macbeth to become King. At first it seemed like Macbeth would let fate decide
if he would be King, however that changed with the manipulation of his wife. Both Macbeth and Lady

Language Identification of Individual Words with Joint...
Within a multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, knowledge of the language of
origin of unknown words can improve pronunciation modelling accuracy. This is of particular
importance for ASR systems required to deal with code switched speech or proper names of foreign
origin. For words that occur in the language model, but do not occur in the pronunciation lexicon, text
based language identification (T LID) of a single word in isolation may be required. This is a
challenging task, especially for short words. We motivate for the importance of accurate T LID in
speech processing systems and introduce a novel way of applying Joint Sequence Models to the T LID
task. We obtain competitive results on a real world 4 language task: for our best JSM system, an F1
value of 97.2% is obtained, compared to a F1 value of 95.2% obtained with a state of the art Support
Vector Machine (SVM). Words, phrases and names are often used across language boundaries in
multilingual settings. Especially for minority languages, such {it code switching} with a dominant
language can become an intrinsic part of the language itself~cite{modipaimplications}. Automatic
speech recognition (ASR) systems are required to deal with various types of words of foreign origin.
For example: automated call routing systems or voice driven navigation systems often process proper
names and foreign words that tend to have pronunciations that are difficult to
predict~cite{reveil2010improving}. These

The Ethics Of Animal Research Essay
PHILOSOPHY 106 Is the use of Animals in Biomedical Research Morally Justified?
Animals have been treated immorally since the beginning of time, this is shown by hunting, farming,
trapping, testing of products and biomedical research etc. As humans, majority of us claim animals as
our resources as we use them for eating, making clothing, (leather and fur jackets, shoes) working
animals, as a means of transport, animal testing etc. In this essay I will discuss the use of animals in
biomedical research and state why some believe it is morally justified. I will then present an objection
to argue why biomedical research is morally unjustified and why I believe this. I will write this essay

animal research: what are the prospects for agreement? , Baruch A. Brody s, Defending animal
research: An international perspective and Peter Singer s, Animal Liberation at 30 . I will then come to
my own conclusion based on the different perspectives from the above philosophers and by using my
own knowledge on the issue.
In this first half of the essay I will discuss the different viewpoints from the philosophers Regan,

Regan s The Case for Animal Rights he argues that animals have a quality that can t be decreased to

Benefits Of Attending A Community College
Students nowadays face many challenges when it comes to obtaining a college education. We evaluate
an institution s quality based on what we need the most. The qualities sought out may vary by each
person s personal point of view. However, as a student, I ve found that most students seek for an
institute that benefits them the most. Attending a community college has been an enormous advantage
towards my education. I have been attending San Bernardino Valley College for the last two
semesters. I have come to respect their philosophies and values. The institution has now been in
business for 87 years. They venture to encourage both students and faculty towards high standards of
achievement and progress into exceptional members of the society. They now offer a variety of
degrees, transfer programs and certificates for a wide range of students. San Bernardino Valley
College has an accomplished staff, student support services and technological tools that pave the road
towards the conquest of a quality education.
Benefits of attending a community college as opposed to a traditional university tend to be overlooked
by potential students. They are either unaware of its advantages or do not fully understand how this
type of education can benefit their cause. Year after year large amounts of students choose to go
straight from high school and in to four year universities. The problem with this particular situations is
that universities in general tend to have 50 400 students in one

The Film Analysis Of The Film Cold Mountain
The film Cold Mountain follows two people Ada Monroe and W.P. Inman, these two star crossed
lovers quickly become separated after the Civil War begins. Ada has to figure out how to make it in
life after being completely alone and being lucky enough to have the right people in her life. Whereas,
Inman had to take a dangerous journey back Cold Mountain to be reunited with Ada again. The movie
is about Inman s journey and Ada learning how to live. For the first third of the movie, it goes back
and forth between Inman s current military life to flash backs of their interactions. The movie begins
with Inman in Petersburg, Virginia looking at a photo of Ada, while the Union soldiers are planning an
attack. It cuts to the first time Ada and Inman officially met, when Sally Swanger approached Ada in
an attempt to get her top field plow if Ada would talk to Inman. Their chat was brief and a bit
awkward as they managed small talk for a moment. The movie flashes back to Inman and the
Explosion, which ensued the battle, viewers saw Inman fight to save his friends life and made sure he
stood by his side until he passed. In another moment of reminiscing Inman remember Ada playing her
piano on the back of the wagon as he was plowing Sally s fields, memories of them talking at a party
about the war and Ada s concern about him enlisting is visibly seen as she asks for a tintype of him.
soon after he dropped off sheet music belonging to his father. Ada, her father Monroe, and Inman take

Informative Speech On The Black Sox Scandal
General Purpose: I will inform the class about an event in history.
Specific Purpose: I would like to inform people on the 1919 Black Sox Scandal in Major League
Baseball.
Introduction
Attention Getter: In 2008 the New York Giants won the Super Bowl by defeating the previously
unbeaten New England Patriots in what most sports fans call one of the greatest upsets in sports
history. What would you think if I told you the Patriots lost the game on purpose? They didn t, but in
1919 eight members of the Chicago White Sox conspired to intentionally lose the World Series against
the Cincinnati Reds in what people now refer to as the Black Sox Scandal.
Speaker Credibility:
My uncle is a huge sports buff and he s often talked to me about this specific scandal. I remember
growing up and still hearing how upset this scandal made him. Its something that still prevalent in
todays sports.
Relate the topic to the audience:
You all probably have watched sports at some time and it should be very interesting for you guys to
know about some drama within the sports industry.
Specific purpose:
Today I want to share with you the story of the black sox scandal of 1919.
Preview of Main Points:
I will talk to you about why the Whitesoxs were the favorites, why the Whitesoxs players didn t like
their management, and how that affected how baseball changed his management.
Body
A. Transition: Heading into the World Series the White Sox were heavy favorites, and people in both
cities believed they would make quick work of the Reds.
I. Throughout the time leading up to the 1919 World Series, reporters in both Chicago and Cincinnati
spoke about how good the World Series would be, and the odds makers listed the White Sox as heavy
favorites.
A. The former MLB pitcher Cristy Mathewson, predicted the best played series in years .
1. He gave the edge on pitching to the Reds, but believed the White Sox offense and experience gave
them a better chance at victory.
2. He also pointed to the fact the Sox played in a better league and had a tougher road to the series,
making them ready for a fight
B. Gamblers also made the White Sox heavy favorites in the World Series.
1. The Cincinnati Inquirer on the article red money appears on

Spying In Sony s Film, Without You, There Is No Us
Spying could be defined as observing furtively and to perceive by careful observation. Literature
resembles spying because an author writes a story line that containing characters who interact and
build up the plot; as a reader or viewer, we see what happens within the characters. Also, the author
has the ability to create an espionage story line or narrate what goes on. An example of this type of
literature spying would be the production of the film, The Interview, where Seth Rogen and James
Franco both have the opportunity to produce and act in the film. In 2014, Sony s film production of
The Interview rose a controversial argument between the North Korean government and Sony
Corporation, which later involved president Barak Obama. The film directed by and starring Seth
Rogen and James Franco, begins with a tabloid show run by Dave Skylark and Aaron Rapoport.

When the two protagonists first arrive to the Dictators home, they use technology provided by the CIA
to assure their dormitories have not been bugged by the military officials. The main example of
surveillance throughout the film involves the CIA eavesdropping on all their conversations, while in
North Korea it involves surveillance through a hearing piece. Director and producer Seth Rogen,
creates the film with the entire plot revolving around spying. Rogen previously explained that he
intended the film to work as a political satire against North Koreas totalitarian regime as well as a
comedy. (Rebecca Hawkes). Despite the film being a comedy, it represents factual information about
the totalitarian government and the living conditions of citizens in North Korea. Before the film got
released, a group called the Guardians of the Peace hacked into Sony only to expose all their private
data and top secret

The Hollow Hope By Gerald Rosenberg
The Hollow Hope by Gerald Rosenberg is based on one research question. That question is: Can the
Court bring about significant social change? In examining this question Rosenberg presents two
different views of the Court. The dynamic court view believes that the court is an excellent catalyst for
social change while the constrained court view believe that there are constraints in place that prevent
the court from making significant change. The constrained court believes that it is only when these
constraints are lifted and certain conditions met that the Court can have an effect on social change. To
explore his question Rosenberg looks into different court cases in which believers of the dynamic
court view think had the most impact on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One thing that he does not make so clear is what he constitutes as significant social change, and how
he will measure what that exactly.
In reading the book Rosenberg does seem to give a hint of bias toward the constrained court as being
more correct, as it appears he spends less of his time arguing for the dynamic court view. However it
may not be bias that is perceived, but just that through his investigation he has found that the
constrained court view is a more accurate representation. There are some parts in the book where
Rosenberg almost asks too much of the Court for the dynamic court view, which makes it appear that
he is setting up the dynamic court argument to fail. As Feeley (1992) mentions in his review of the
first edition of The Hollow Hope, Rosenberg makes his arguments as a lawyer would, which by
definition sets up his opponent to fail and as his conclusion as the most obvious choice. With this in
mind one could conclude that Rosenberg sets up the dynamic court view to fail on purpose to make
his point more clear. There are some points throughout the book where there is a correlation for the
dynamic court that it means there is nothing there, whereas when there is a correlation for the
constrained court he uses that as a point to prove his conclusions.
The sources that Rosenberg used are dependable sources, and he presents the information that the
sources provide in a

Pest Control
Substantial Content
I. Importance of natural method of pest control
The problem with broad range conventional pesticides is that they not only kill the bad bugs, but they
rub out the good bugs, too. A garden without natural predators means a world of insects gone wild.
There s nothing left to keep pest levels in check. In fact, chemicals can mean double trouble because
although you wipe out the first wave of pests, the second wave which is not the usual pest, but another
insect moving into the area can cause even greater losses than the insects you were trying to get rid of
in the first place. Another reason to go natural and use beneficials, is that a greater number of insects
are now showing resistance to chemical pesticides. For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Garlic: Mix four quarts water, two tablespoons garlic juice do not use garlic powder, it will burn
plants, 32 grams of diatomaceous earth and one teaspoon or rubbing alcohol.
Effects: spray garlic pesticide on sweet potatoes to repel rabbits
Ground Coffee: Leftover coffee grounds make great ingredients to compost. They work as natural
pesticides and literally perk up ailing plants. Place the grounds into the soil surrounding your plants.
The acidity of the coffee is what keeps invaders at bay.
Vegetable oil: If mildew, mold or fungus is a problem, heres a solution you can spray right on the plant
that makes a big difference in a very short time. Combine a gallon of water, a tablespoon of baking
soda and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Put into a spray bottle and mist plants from top to bottom
even in places where there are no signs of a problem.
Dish Washing Liquid: If a fungus has invaded your plants, mix a few drops of dishwashing liquid and
water and wipe it down. You ll be surprised how quickly this will rejuvenate sickly looking plants!
Egg: To get rid of snails and slugs in your garden, add crushed eggshells to your soil. To them, its
walking on glass, so snails and slugs will tend to avoid the area entirely. If slugs are a continuing
problem, a few pinches of salt will make quick work of them.
C. Physical Method
Time consuming but very natural, this method consists of many things you can physically do to
control bugs and other pests. Picking grubs

My Future Goal To Attend A D1 School
My future goal is to one day attend a D1 school. With this goal in mind, I would be able to combine
my leadership background gained from playing hockey, maintain academic excellence and continue to
develop my Christian morals if accepted to Brother Rice High School. As a young man, I knew
hockey is something that I loved to do. I enjoyed playing hockey with my family on our outdoor ice
rink and on my hockey team. At this time, however I did not realize that the skills I was developing
would prepare me for the future. Hockey not only gave me leadership skills, but also helped me grow
individually giving me responsibility and critical thinking. From the time I scored my first goal to
assisting my teammates in annual charity events, I knew going

Feather Ina Creative Writing
Once in awhile she d come across some sort of berry she knew was okay to eat. The bright red, minty
wintergreen berry grew on low plants and every so often she d find a few ripe ones to pick. She
chewed on them a little and shared them with Christopher. Even the leaves tasted good to chew. It
would get their hunger going though because it was such a tiny amount of food. There were other
berries in the woods, but she knew some of them were deadly. She had come across some fat blue
berries that looked edible and had almost tasted them, and then she saw a dead sparrow lying under
the bush. It was too close a call, she decided not to try anything else unless she knew exactly what it
was, no matter how hungry they got.

The thick bushes with their leathery green leaves, and twisting branches, were a tangled growth well
over the height of her head. She had moved halfway up on a mountainside. Now, the ravine the creek
was in was narrow, and steep all the way down to the water. It was very hard to see any distance ahead
of her while walking in the heavy cover. She was following some sort of game trail that skirted the
side of the mountain but away from the openness of the stream. She turned a corner and started down
a gradual slope when something dark caught her eyes on the trail ahead. It was two black bear cubs
rolling around and wrestling with each other. She stood and watched their comical antics and couldn t
help but chuckle at how much they looked like little children who teased and poked and chased each
other in play. One cub would wrap its arm around the other s neck and chew on its ear. Then the
victim would break away and circle right back to jump on the back of its sibling. All thoughts left her
mind for a few moments as she saw them play in their wild home. She had never been so close to
animals like this before and was riveted in place by fascination. Then Christopher got restless, cried
aloud, and suddenly both cubs stopped playing and looked towards her. When they saw her standing
there, they became alarmed and separated. Each one ran up a separate tree by the path. Once in the
trees they looked her way and then bawled loudly. It was a noise that sounded like a deep Maaww,

Victoria Chemicals Report
Introduction The following report shows that the proposal of the modernisation project should obtain
funding from the corporate headquarters of Victoria Chemicals. The project has an initial outlay of
GBP12 million to renovate and rationalise the polypropylene production line at Merseyside plant. This
is done in order to make up for deferred maintenance and exploit opportunities to achieve increased
efficiency. This report will look at the following four main areas of concern in order to calculate the
feasibility of this Merseyside Project: * The cost of GBP2 million for the purchase of new rolling
stock being allocated to the Transport Division or to the Merseyside project. * The cannibalization
affect on Rotterdam ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Transport Division would have to pay nothing if it was included in the initial outlay of the
Merseyside Project, yet the Transport Division would gain the benefits from the project with extra
throughput 2 years early at no cost to them, except increased maintenance of their trucks. We do
acknowledge that this is a big assumption to make saying that the Merseyside project should not take
on any transport costs. Therefore we put in the clause that if taking on the Merseyside project
decreases the NPV of their project we can come to some sort of agreement over the percentage of
costs each division should take for the purchase of the new tank cars. There is also an agency problem
here with the executive VP of Transport Division and Intermediate Chemicals Group who receive an
annual incentive bonus pegged to the performance of their division. Hence both executive VP s would
want to reduce costs as much as possible and try off load any cost they can to another division.
Concerns of the ICG Sales and Marketing Department The director of sales raised the issue that the
company wouldn t be able to sell the extra output that the project would produce. Instead of selling
more units in total the Liverpool plant would just cannibalize Rotterdam s sales. Therefore the
company would not be able to take full advantage of the efficiencies of the new project. We disagree
with the directors belief that the new sales will all be

  • 2. The Silmarillion Chapter Summary Thus Douglas Charles Kane sets forth the inspiration for his meticulous review of the origin of the text Christopher Tolkien presented in 1977 as The Silmarillion. I confess that I myself belonged to the second group, until the publication of The History of Middle earth volumes revealed the extent of the evolution of the Legendarium. Christopher has presented that evolution roughly in a chronological format, with The Book of Lost Tales containing Tolkien s earliest writings and The War of the Jewels the latest concerning the tales of The Silmarillion. Anyone interested in following the development of a single tale, therefore, must work through portions of multiple volumes. Kane, who calls The Silmarillion arguably his most important work (23), set out to show how Christopher, with the assistant of Guy Gavriel Kay, put together what has become the settled text of The Silmarillion. Kane proceeds through The Silmarillion chapter by chapter, showing the source within The History of Middle earth for each paragraph. [Additionally, he referred rarely to Unfinished Tales, The Children of Húrin, and, in at least one instance, Tolkien s letters (25).] Each chapter of Kane s book contains a table detailing his findings. For example, for Chapter 13 Of the Return of the Noldor, paragraph 1 was taken from the later Quenya paragraph 88, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. Paperless Tickets As a sports fan, what do you think of paperless tickets to attend a sporting event? I believe paperless tickets are useful, considering that it provides a new, efficient, and alternative way to accelerate the process of validating your ticket at a venue. I recently had an experience with paperless tickets when I went to the Knicks vs. Wizards games about two weeks ago. Before attending the game I had the tasks of printing out the tickets that my friend paid for. On the TicketMaster site, the option paperless tickets pop up in which we received our tickets via electronically. This is definitely bad on the venue and ticketing system, as what if the customer had some random emergency and needed to sell their ticket for they cannot attend the game? This decreases the reputation of the ticketing system, as they do not value the customer needs. They also do not provide different options other than transferring the ticket. In other words, ticket outlets like TicketMaster essentially own your ticket in which the customer is not in control. This can also result in negative press for paperless tickets, as they do not allow refunds or the reselling of your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Court Standards, Rules, and Regulations THE STANDARDS USED TO DETERMINE EXPERT WITNESSES In the legal foundation of the courts, the courts are typically known for prohibiting witnesses from offering testimony based upon opinions of their own or even their own analysis. Courts, however, are more lenient when it comes to including testimony by expert witnesses that provide testimony that falls within the realm of their own expertise. Cornell University Law School state that, in general terms, expert witnesses are provided the ability to testify about the opinions of a case given that their analysis that they use can be determined as scientifically sound (n.d.). It is, however, important to identify that there are standards to which expert witnesses are determined and that there are federal rules designed to that of the use of expert witnesses and the standards behind their inclusion as well as the information that they are allowed to claim knowledge to. These federal rules are listed under the Federal Rules of Evidence under Article VII: Opinions and Expert Testimony (Rule 701 706); these, however, are not to be confused with the previous article which is Article VI: Witnesses, which contain rules 601 615 about witnesses used within court as a general basis of information (Committee on the Judiciary House of Representatives, 2013). To provide a simple understanding of Rules 701 706, these rules show that an expert witness or an expert who is qualified, is granted the ability to provide their opinion to assist ... Tillie Olsen s Yonnondio Essay Tillie Olsen s Yonnondio In contrast to many other Depression era novels, in which the teamwork of the common man is seen as society s glue, Tillie Olsen s Yonnondio looks with great admiration at one family s struggle to keep above water. Through the travails of a coal mining/farming family, Anna Holbrook becomes the one constant in a society that turns man against himself, and where fortune is evanescent. The thirst for something stable is evident as the children show their awe of the physical world. American Agriculture Needs a Free-Market System Essay American Agriculture Needs a Free Market System The words to the famous old children s song Old MacDonald Had a Farm are due for a revision. The new lines should read Old MacDonald had a farm . . . with a lawyer here, and an accountant there, and everywhere a new federal program and regulation. Not quite as poetic, but definitely more appropriate. The current state of agribusiness consists of an incredibly complex mix of subsidies, price supports, and bureaucratic regulations that could confound the most knowledgeable business minds. Underlying this tangled web of rules and regulations are political battles that pit normally allied groups against each other, and bring normally adversarial groups into allegiance. One bizarre ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, by the late sixties and early seventies the percentage had climbed to 20%, and in 1987 direct payments totaled 30% of net farm income (Rapp, 1988). Now, most economists will tell you that government control of prices simply does not work. Artificially high prices provide an incentive for an efficient producer to undercut the price to grab a larger share of the market. This wasn t the only problem. Besides trying to control the power of the free market, the government faced another uncontrollable force: the weather. Agriculture, being entirely dependent on the whims of Mother Nature, and therefore an industry where accurate forecasts of production are nearly impossible, is not suited to long range price fixing schemes. Thus, the 1950s saw the abandonment of price supports and the introduction of income supports. Early in the twentieth century, our leaders believed that the vitality of our agri cultural base was vital to our national interest, and as the most abundant country in the world there was no reason to expect that we would lose that vitality. But the Great Depression changed that perception. Since the depression, it has been the continuing policy of the government, Republican and Democratic administrations alike, to support the ... Argued: April 8, 2014. Decided: August 27, 2014 II. Case Summary This appeal evolved out of a 2006 rape case that occurred in Harford county Maryland. More than two years after the incident the victim identified Glenn Joseph Raynor, hereby known as petitioner, as a possible suspect. After departing a voluntary police interview in which petitioner ultimately declined a request for his DNA to be collected for comparison. Investigators collected DNA on swabs from the armrest of his chair. DNA analysis revealed a match from samples collected at the crime scene. After further investigation petitioner was charged and convicted of first degree rape and related offenses. Petitioner challenged his conviction based on Fourth Amendment grounds contending that the collection and analysis of his DNA from the chair constituted an unlawful search as it violated his expectation of privacy (Sternstein, 2014). According to Raynor v. State 2014 to ascertain whether this conduct is a search under the Fourth Amendment two conditions must be satisfied: 1) a defendant must demonstrate an actual subjective expectation of privacy in the item or place searched and 2) Prove that the expectation is one that society is prepared to recognize as objectively reasonable. Workers During The 1900s S Workers in the 1870s to 1930s Throughout history many people, such as politicians, officials, and generals, have been noted to have molded the United States, neglecting the fact that workers have also played an important role in shaping this nation s history. During the 1870s to the 1930s, laborers faced many hardships; they had trouble keeping their jobs, had their wages decreased, and were forced to work sixty hour weeks without insurance. Over time, workers began to feel aggravated by their employers demands and began to voice their opinions. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eventually the workers began to protest. They went on strikes, formed unions, and even used violence against the employers. One of the unions called the Knights of Labor, founded in the 1869, fought for eight hour workdays and wage equality among male, female, black, and white workers. They participated in many strikes, boycotts, and other activities protesting for workplace freedom. Another labor union was the American Federation of Labor founded in 1881 consisting of mostly skilled workers. Formed in 1903, the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and Women s Trade Union League also played a role in aiding workers, specifically female laborers, to gain work rights. These labor movements played significant roles in history because they influenced or forced employers to make changes in the workplace. One of the key issues that workers were fighting for was wages. During the 1870s to 1920s, employers often lowered the workers wages. For example, when the legislature of Massachusetts enacted a fifty four hour working limit per week, employers decided to lower the wages. During the first national labor walkout, laborers protested against employers decreasing their wages; this event became known as the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. An example of a successful strike was in New Orleans of 1907, 10,000 dockworkers were able to stop employers from reducing their wages. • 11. Carrie White Compare And Contrast Contrasting the house De Palma made into an uncanny character of its own, this house is nice looking and spacious; its yard and street are fertile and well maintained; the walls appear freshly painted and light colored; the furniture is pleasingly organized and equipped for company; and condemnatory male religious icons don t border the female residents and shimmer down at them as they did in the previous version. Although some of the events that take place in the household are far from normal, the film gives no indication that Carrie is not in a healthy environment. By highlighting the normality of Carrie s living conditions the director removes the focus off of the mother daughter relations. In the original version, there was a sense of self hatred, but in the latest version, that self hatred is magnified. Also, Carrie White disregards her curfew while she was out looking for dresses in the film leaving her mother worried sick. Best Water Hydration What s The Best Water for Hydration (different types of water) Staying hydrated, is so important, that many professionals recommend that you start, and end, your day with water, to balance out the amount you lose while sleeping. You lose water when you breathe, sweat, and urinate, and you lose much more when you are active. Many people underestimate the amount of fluids that they lose from perspiration; for example, if you exercise for an hour, you can lose up to a quart of fluids from sweating. Dehydration occurs, when there is more fluid moving out of cells, than being taken in. His most famous and innovative novel, The Catcher in the Rye, set a new course for literature in post WW2 America and vaulted Salinger to the heights of literary fame. JD Salinger s Holden Caulfield, the main character of his novel, is to the 20th century the unforgettably haunting voice of the adolescent at odds with a very troubling world. Holden is an unhappy, rich and lost boy who has done a bunk from his posh secondary school, Pencey Prep, in Agerstown. Holden begins his first person narrative. Even so, the government took steps to decrease its consumption further by banning the sale of bread until twelve hours after it had been baked. The government decided that fresh bread was very difficult to cut thinly so, if everyone cut their loaves in thick slices, they would consume more. Additionally, the more appetising taste of fresh baked bread could encourage people to eat it immoderately. Plans were put in place to substitute the established white loaf with a national loaf made from wholemeal grain. Before Xmas, 1914, the truth dawned on me I had been selfish ignoring the fact that thousands of fine, brave fellows had already given their lives good Christian men most of them and presumed to put my conscientious objections before my country s need and the cause of God. According to the company website, Wal Mart sells more than $400 billion worth of goods a year and employees more than 2.2 million people. Wal Mart is famous for its low prices, which have attracted criticism for being predatory and therefore pushing out competing businesses. Because Wal Mart is extremely large, it has become a price setter for both sellers and competition. Successful Communication Over the past few weeks my group has been using our group discussion board as our primary method of communication. Since beginning our power point project we have been posting updates, questions and simple check ins to see how each member of the group is coming along with their portion of the PowerPoint assignment. Our key to success has been because of our communication; this is especially important because we are a virtual group. We touch base with each other regularly for multiple reasons, the first being the need to establish a relationship. In contrast to teams who meet face to face on a regular basis, we cannot pick up on non verbal clues that are expressed through body language, nor are we able to establish an emotional connection with one another; with that being said, we must maintain regular contact in order to build a rapport. The uncouple and down regulation are both involved in the receptor desensitization, but in different steps. These steps are following described. First, the receptor uncouple from heterotrimeric G proteins; Second, cell surface receptors internalize into intracellular membranous compartments; Third, receptor mRNA and protein synthesis decrease result in the down regulation of the total cellular complement of receptors, as well as both the lysosomal and plasma membrane degradation of pre existing receptors. There are two generally kinases which are G protein coupled receptor kinase GRKs and second messenger dependent protein kinases(e.g., PKA and PKC). The G protein coupled receptor kinase only act on the phosphorylate agonist activate receptor. For example, GRK family members work on activated receptors, and then promote the binding of cytosolic arrestins, which sterically uncouple the receptor from heterotrimeric G protein. To a child, shoes are just something that you sport until your feet bust out of them, or until you wear holes into them. I was eight years old when my feet stopped growing, when I got my first pair of converse, and when my shoe obsession began. The first place I took my Converse was on the third grade trip to Camp Mary Orton. ABSTRACT: Availability of daylight in a building not only improves the well being of an individual but also plays an important role in reducing our dependence on artificial light and the operational cost of a building. Daylight if not controlled could cause the major problem of solar heat gain in a building and thus causing an increase in the air conditioning cost of the building especially in warm climates. Offices being one of the building categories that need to be well lit regardless of their size and location, it is important to optimize the daylight and control the heat gain in an office building. This paper discusses the different daylight strategies to achieve this. 1. INTRODUCTION A room is not a room without natural light. Another imperative that Father Finian displayed was his ability to ensure legitimacy and credibility with the local population. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare Macbeth receives the unexpected visit from three witches who tell him and his companion Banquo their prophecy, which unravels the desire of Macbeth to become King. At first it seemed like Macbeth would let fate decide if he would be King, however that changed with the manipulation of his wife. • 37. Language Identification of Individual Words with Joint... Within a multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, knowledge of the language of origin of unknown words can improve pronunciation modelling accuracy. This is of particular importance for ASR systems required to deal with code switched speech or proper names of foreign origin. For words that occur in the language model, but do not occur in the pronunciation lexicon, text based language identification (T LID) of a single word in isolation may be required. This is a challenging task, especially for short words. We motivate for the importance of accurate T LID in speech processing systems and introduce a novel way of applying Joint Sequence Models to the T LID task. We obtain competitive results on a real world 4 language task: for our best JSM system, an F1 value of 97.2% is obtained, compared to a F1 value of 95.2% obtained with a state of the art Support Vector Machine (SVM). Words, phrases and names are often used across language boundaries in multilingual settings. Especially for minority languages, such {it code switching} with a dominant language can become an intrinsic part of the language itself~cite{modipaimplications}. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are required to deal with various types of words of foreign origin. For example: automated call routing systems or voice driven navigation systems often process proper names and foreign words that tend to have pronunciations that are difficult to predict~cite{reveil2010improving}. • 40. The Ethics Of Animal Research Essay PHILOSOPHY 106 Is the use of Animals in Biomedical Research Morally Justified? Animals have been treated immorally since the beginning of time, this is shown by hunting, farming, trapping, testing of products and biomedical research etc. As humans, majority of us claim animals as our resources as we use them for eating, making clothing, (leather and fur jackets, shoes) working animals, as a means of transport, animal testing etc. In this essay I will discuss the use of animals in biomedical research and state why some believe it is morally justified. I will then present an objection to argue why biomedical research is morally unjustified and why I believe this. I will write this essay using resources from Tom Regan s, The case for animal rights , David DeGrazia s, The ethics of animal research: what are the prospects for agreement? , Baruch A. Brody s, Defending animal research: An international perspective and Peter Singer s, Animal Liberation at 30 . I will then come to my own conclusion based on the different perspectives from the above philosophers and by using my own knowledge on the issue. In this first half of the essay I will discuss the different viewpoints from the philosophers Regan, DeGrazia and Singer on their perspectives on why biomedical research is morally unjustified. In Tom Regan s The Case for Animal Rights he argues that animals have a quality that can t be decreased to their utility and puts forth a defense to eliminate harm brought about ... They venture to encourage both students and faculty towards high standards of achievement and progress into exceptional members of the society. They now offer a variety of degrees, transfer programs and certificates for a wide range of students. San Bernardino Valley College has an accomplished staff, student support services and technological tools that pave the road towards the conquest of a quality education. Benefits of attending a community college as opposed to a traditional university tend to be overlooked by potential students. They are either unaware of its advantages or do not fully understand how this type of education can benefit their cause. In examining this question Rosenberg presents two different views of the Court. The dynamic court view believes that the court is an excellent catalyst for social change while the constrained court view believe that there are constraints in place that prevent the court from making significant change. One thing that he does not make so clear is what he constitutes as significant social change, and how he will measure what that exactly. In reading the book Rosenberg does seem to give a hint of bias toward the constrained court as being more correct, as it appears he spends less of his time arguing for the dynamic court view. However it may not be bias that is perceived, but just that through his investigation he has found that the constrained court view is a more accurate representation. There are some parts in the book where Rosenberg almost asks too much of the Court for the dynamic court view, which makes it appear that he is setting up the dynamic court argument to fail. As Feeley (1992) mentions in his review of the first edition of The Hollow Hope, Rosenberg makes his arguments as a lawyer would, which by definition sets up his opponent to fail and as his conclusion as the most obvious choice. With this in mind one could conclude that Rosenberg sets up the dynamic court view to fail on purpose to make his point more clear. There are some points throughout the book where there is a correlation for the dynamic court that it means there is nothing there, whereas when there is a correlation for the constrained court he uses that as a point to prove his conclusions. The Transport Division would have to pay nothing if it was included in the initial outlay of the Merseyside Project, yet the Transport Division would gain the benefits from the project with extra throughput 2 years early at no cost to them, except increased maintenance of their trucks. We do acknowledge that this is a big assumption to make saying that the Merseyside project should not take on any transport costs. Therefore we put in the clause that if taking on the Merseyside project decreases the NPV of their project we can come to some sort of agreement over the percentage of costs each division should take for the purchase of the new tank cars. There is also an agency problem here with the executive VP of Transport Division and Intermediate Chemicals Group who receive an annual incentive bonus pegged to the performance of their division. Hence both executive VP s would want to reduce costs as much as possible and try off load any cost they can to another division.
