To Study Pedestrian Road Crossing Behaviour at Intersection under
Mixed Traffic Condition

Abstract - Among different modes in transportation walking is one of the sustainable mode in urban transportation especially in
India, because of the flexibility and mobility involved in the walking mode. This research presents relationship between traffic
stream parameters. The models developed in this research predict speed, delay, density, maximum queue estimates with varying
volume, for urban roads. So on the basis of study of mixed traffic at signalized intersections, the conclusion is made that the graph
of relationship of speed, density and flow does not match with the existing green shield model. So modeling of new equation for
signalized intersection for Indian traffic by using linear regression model is obtained.
1. INTRODUCTION
Pedestrian requirements have received considerable attention compared to motorized vehicles. Although the external costs
imposed by pedestrian on the system are minimal, no clear credit is given to them in the context of how they are treated in the
mode hierarchy, particularly in urban areas. Understanding pedestrian road crossing decisions is an important traffic safety
issue, especially for those countries, where populations are rapidly aging. A mixed traffic stream consists of vehicles that have
different speeds, sizes, operating characteristics, and vehicle spacing. The Indian traffic is mixed traffic. Homogeneous design
methods do not fit the heterogeneous situation, especially in nonlane basedroadwaysthatpopulatethedevelopingworld.This
paper reviews the status of heterogeneous mixes worldwide, and what factors need to be consideredinsuchmixes.Theissues
of safety, modeling and non-motorized transport are considered, and solutions for these are discussed. These are important
because the need for an understanding of heterogeneous mixes will grow in the future due to their presence in developing
world mega cities and growth in the developed world.
1.1 Objectives
1) To study macroscopic traffic parameters (delay, flow, speed and density)
2) Comparing the relationship between traffic parameters speed-flow, flow-density and speed-density.
3) To study literature governing stream, composition traffic stream, parameter and traffic flow model.
4) To study Statistical methods to analyze the data which is used to compare model.
5) Least square regression method will be used to model bi-variate relationship like speed flow relationship, speed-density
relative and flow density relationship.
2. DATA COLLECTION
A video graphic survey has been done at intersectionsnamelyRajkamal.Eachoftheseintersectionshavethreeapproachesanda
camera was setup at an elevated station to record the data to each approach of these intersections. The survey was done for
morning and evening to find out the pedestrian peak hour in the respective intersections.

5. CONCLUSION
By using SPSS software for speed-density curve, we get regression value and coefficients value. If the regression value is one,
then there will be perfect correlation between two variables. The value of correlation varies between +1 to -1. –Ve sign
indicates the –ve correlation between two variables.So on thebasisofstudyofheterogeneoustrafficatsignalizedintersections,
the conclusion is made that the graph of relationship of speed and flow does not match with the existing green shield model.
We modeled new equation for signalized intersection for Indian traffic by using linear regression model.

This research presents relationship between traffic stream parameters. The models developed in this research predict speed, delay, density, maximum queue estimates with varying volume, for urban roads. So on the basis of study of mixed traffic at signalized intersections, the conclusion is made that the graph of relationship of speed, density and flow does not match with the existing green shield model. So modeling of new equation for signalized intersection for Indian traffic by using linear regression model is obtained. 1. INTRODUCTION Pedestrian requirements have received considerable attention compared to motorized vehicles. Although the external costs imposed by pedestrian on the system are minimal, no clear credit is given to them in the context of how they are treated in the mode hierarchy, particularly in urban areas. Understanding pedestrian road crossing decisions is an important traffic safety issue, especially for those countries, where populations are rapidly aging. A mixed traffic stream consists of vehicles that have different speeds, sizes, operating characteristics, and vehicle spacing. The Indian traffic is mixed traffic. Homogeneous design methods do not fit the heterogeneous situation, especially in nonlane basedroadwaysthatpopulatethedevelopingworld.This paper reviews the status of heterogeneous mixes worldwide, and what factors need to be consideredinsuchmixes.Theissues of safety, modeling and non-motorized transport are considered, and solutions for these are discussed. These are important because the need for an understanding of heterogeneous mixes will grow in the future due to their presence in developing world mega cities and growth in the developed world. 1.1 Objectives 1) To study macroscopic traffic parameters (delay, flow, speed and density) 2) Comparing the relationship between traffic parameters speed-flow, flow-density and speed-density. 3) To study literature governing stream, composition traffic stream, parameter and traffic flow model. 4) To study Statistical methods to analyze the data which is used to compare model. 5) Least square regression method will be used to model bi-variate relationship like speed flow relationship, speed-density relative and flow density relationship. 2. DATA COLLECTION A video graphic survey has been done at intersectionsnamelyRajkamal.Eachoftheseintersectionshavethreeapproachesanda camera was setup at an elevated station to record the data to each approach of these intersections. The survey was done for morning and evening to find out the pedestrian peak hour in the respective intersections. 3. CONCLUSION By using SPSS software for speed-density curve, we get regression value and coefficients value. If the regression value is one, then there will be perfect correlation between two variables. The value of correlation varies between +1 to -1. –Ve sign indicates the –ve correlation between two variables.So on thebasisofstudyofheterogeneoustrafficatsignalizedintersections, the conclusion is made that the graph of relationship of speed and flow does not match with the existing green shield model. We modeled new equation for signalized intersection for Indian traffic by using linear regression model.
