This document introduces the concepts of diction, denotation, and connotation. It discusses how words have explicit dictionary definitions (denotation) as well as feelings or images they evoke (connotation). Examples are given of word sets like mother/mama that have the same denotation but different connotations. Readers are asked to consider how word choice (diction) can alter meaning and the formality levels of language. Poetic diction is also introduced as the specialized vocabulary and phrasing used in poetry.
