The City
Time draws on and the ground lays cold.
The streets lay dormant in a dark sea of black,
With lamp posts littered around the vast space,
Emitting an eerie light which creeps into all cracks.
A nearby bridge glistens with frost and due,
It's metal a bitter cold, so harsh and sharp.
I gaze down into the reaches of the curdling,
tumbling tide below as it cascades in symphony.
“Writing free verse is like playing
tennis with the net down.”
Robert Frost

I Love To Write Poems
I love to write
Day and night
What would my heart do
But cry, sigh and be blue
If I could not write
Writing feels good
And I know it should
Who could have knew
That what I do
Is write, write, write
- Unknown Author
Theme
 the statement the poem or the poet makes
about its subject
 usually may be expressed in several different

ELEMENTS OF POETRY
Sunset—Coney Island
-Langston Hughes-
The sun,
Like the red yolk of a rotten egg,
Falls behind the roller-coaster
And the horizon sticks
With a putrid odor of colors.
Down on the beach
A little Jewish tailor from the Bronx,
With a bad stomach,
Throws up the hot-dog sandwiches
He ate in the afternoon
While life to him
Is like a sick tomato
In a garbage can.
“A poet's autobiography is his
poetry.”
Yevgeny Yevtushenko
