 Transportation Engineering:
 Transportation engineering is a branch of civil
engineering that is involved in the planning, design, operation,
and maintenance of safe and efficient transportation systems.
These systems include roadways, railways, waterways, and
intermodal operations.
 Transportation engineers work to ensure the safe, economical
and timely movement of people and goods. They might be
involved in all aspects of new private and
public transportation projects, which can include addressing
energy needs, budget constraints and environmental concerns.
 The evolution and advancement in Transportation facilities have
been closely linked with the development of human being.
 The economy status of any country depends upon the how well
served the country is by different modes of Transportation.
 For human need all the agricultural or industrial products need to
transport at various stages from production to distribution.
Scope Of
Transportation
Engineering
Engineers having
specialized
in Transportation
Engineering are
required by construction
companies to prepare
preliminary and final
plans for highways,
bridges, drainage
structures, municipal
utilities, roadway
lighting, traffic control
devices and
intelligent transportation
systems.
Modes Of
Transportation
Land Ways
Roadways
Railways
Pipe Lines
Multimodal
Airways
Waterways
 Land ways Transportation
 Land transport is the transport or movement of people,
animals or goods from one location to another location on
land. The two main forms of land transport are
rail transport and road transport.
 Road Ways:
 Road transport means transportation of goods and personnel from one
place to the other on roads. Road is a route between two destinations,
which has been either paved or worked on to enable transportation by way
of motorized and non-motorized carriages. There are many advantages of
road transport in comparison to other means of transport.
 Road Ways
Advantage Disadvantage
Flexible Service Vulnerable to congestion
and traffic delays
Door to Door Service Affected by weather
Cheapest in shorter
distance
Dependence on fuel price
Easy to monitor Need extensive road
network and proper area
 Railways:
 Rail transport is the conveyance of passengers and goods by
means of wheeled vehicles specially designed to run
along railways or railroads. It is a rapid, energy-efficient, but
capital-intensive means of mechanized land transport. It is part
of the logistics chain that facilitates international trade and
economic growth in most countries.
 Railways
Advantages Disadvantages
Safe mood of transport Fixed route
Can be most effective if
connected with
multimodal
Can not be stopped at
intermediate points
Lowest overall cost per
unit weight
Can not provide door to door
service
Environmental protection Inflexible
 Multimodal Transport:
 Multimodal transport (also known as combined transport) is
the transportation of goods under a single contract, but
performed with at least two different modes of transport the
carrier is liable (in a legal sense) for the entire carriage, even
though it is performed by several different modes of transport
(by rail, sea and road, for example).
 Multimodal Transport:
Advantages Disadvantages
Lowest cost as compared to
other modes
Slowest speed as compared
to other modes
Can carry up to 500,000
DWT loads
Accessibility and
frequency may vary by
routes
Most suitable for long haul
and low cost commodities
Dependence on road for last
mile connectivity
 Pipeline Transportation:
 Pipeline transport is the mode of transportation of goods or
material through a pipe. Liquids and gases are transported in
pipelines and any chemically stable substance can be sent through
a pipeline. Pipelines exist for the transport of crude and refined
petroleum, fuels - such as oil, natural gas and bio fuels - and other
fluids including sewage, slurry, water and beer.
 Pipeline Transportation System:
Pipeline Transportation:
Advantages Disadvantages
Suitable for all weather State of commodity to be
transported is limited
Low energy consumption Leakages
Space utilization High fix costs
Continuous Inflexible
 Airways Transportation:
 Air transport is one of the fastest modes of
public transport which connects international boundaries. Air
transport allows people from different countries to cross
international boundaries and travel other countries for
personal, business, medical, and tourism purposes.
 Airways Transportation:
Advantages Disadvantages
Flexible High cost of construction and
maintenance
Quick Service Costliest
Natural Highways Limited carrying capacity
Protection International restrictions
High Speed Unsuitable for bulky goods
 Waterways Transportation:
 Water transport is the process of transport a watercraft, such as a
barge, boat, ship or sailboat, over a body of water, such as a sea,
ocean, lake, canal or river. The need for buoyancy unites
watercraft, and makes the hull a dominant aspect of its
construction, maintenance and appearance.
 Ship transport is primarily used for the carriage of people
and non-perishable goods, generally referred to as cargo.
 Waterways Transportation:
Advantages Disadvantages
Cheapest mode of transport Slow
Large carrying capacity Huge capital expenditure
Safety High cost of maintenance
Protection to goods No door to door service
Flexibility Special packing
