INTRODUCTION
TO PRODUCTION
MANAGEMENT
Production management: Production management is an
organizational lifecycle function within a company
dealing with the planning, directing, co-ordination and
control the activities related to the production.”
• Production is the process of converting row material
into finished goods by applying process using
machines or manpower.
• Production is affected by four factors namely, land,
labour, capital and entrepreneurship.
• The effective and controlled administration of
production factor is termed as ‘production
management’.
OBJECTIVES OF PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT
1) Quality objective
2) Quantity objective
3) Time objective
4) Effectiveness objective
5) Efficiency objective
6) Capacity utilization objective
7) Cost objective
FUNCTIONS OF PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT
1) Selection of product& design
2) Selection of process for production
3) Selecting right production capacity
4) Production planning
5) Production control
6) Inventory control
7) Cost & quality control
8) Maintenance & replacement of machine
PLANT LOCATION
• Plant location is a strategic decision of the management.
• The selection of site is very important for the starting industry.
• When it has been decided to start a plant, it is the most important
to select a suitable site or location to for factory.
FACTORS AFFECTING THE PLANT LOCATON
1. Availability of raw material
2. Availability of labour
3. Availability of water
4. Availability of power & fuel
5. Transportation facility
6. Climatic condition
7. Nearness to market
8. Nearness to suppliers
9. Government benefits
10. Community attitude
11. Security
PLANT LAYOUT
• DEFINITION: “It is an arrangement of facility & services in the plant”
• And then plant layout define as ‘to locate different machine and plant
services within the factory so that the greatest possible o/p of high
quality at the lowest possible total cost can be available’
FACTOR AFFECTING PLANT LAYOUT
1. Management policy
2. Manufacturing process
3. Nature of product
4. Volume of production
5. Type of building
6. Availability of total floor area
7. Types of equipment
8. Possibility of future expansion
TYPES OF PLANT LAYOUT
1. Process layout
2. Product layout
3. Mixed layout
4. Static layout
PRODUCT LAYOUT
• This kind of layout is designed according the operations
required in manufacturing the product . the machines are
arranged sequentially according to the processes to be carried
out on raw materials. this product layout is used when the large
amount of same product is to be manufactured.
PROCESS LAYOUT
• This kind of layout is the machine are located together i.e. similar
types of machine are arranged in one area of the plant . So, the
similar processes are carried out the same place. This layout is also
termed as job layout having low volume of production.
COMBINED LAYOUT
• It is rare to find out pure product or process plant layout. The
combined layout is mostly used in the in the industrial in order to
get the advantages of both types of plant layouts. In such case
machinery is arranged in a process layout but process grouping is
then arranged in a sequence to manufacturing various types and
size of group.
FIXED POSITION LAYOUT
• In this type of plan layout, the product is kept at a fixed position
and all other material , components , tool, machines, equipment ;
workers are brought in periphery of it . this generally happens
when the work piece is huge in size and it cannot be loaded on to
any machine . Generally the process of ship building, design of
wind blades, aircraft structuring and other projects involve this
kind of plant layout.
