INTERVIEW
DEFINITION;
An interview is conversation between an
interviewer and an interviewee. Where one
participant ask questions and the other
provides answers .
PHASES OF THE
INTERVIEW
The nursing interview has three basic phases.
 Introductory phase
 Working phase
 Summary and closing phase
Introductory phase
After introducing him/herself to the client; the nurse explains the purpose of
the interview’ discuss the types of questions that will be asked 'explain the
reasons for taking notes 'and assure the client that all information will remain
confidential 'the nurse also make sure that the client is comfortable(physically
and emotionally)and has privacy.
WORKING PHASE
During this phase’ the nurse elicits the client's comments about
major biographic data, reason for seeking care ,history of present health
concern, past health history, family history, review of body system for current
health problems, lifestyle and health practices, and developmental level. The
nurse then listens, observes and use critical thinking to interpret and validate
information received from the client.
Summary and closing phase
During the summary and closing, the nurse summarizes information obtained
during the working phase and validates problems and goals with the client. She
also identifies and discuss possible plans to resolve the problems with the client.
Finally, the nurse make sure to ask if anything else concern the client or if there
are any further question.
