1-CLIMATIC FACTORS: insufficient and unpredictable (time
& duration) rainfall, high temperature, high evaporation
2. SOIL FACTORS: less moisture, less nutrients, less
vegetation, low organic matter, sandy soils with high wind
erosion
3. SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS: low yield, food security
problem, lack of facilities of transport, markets & storage
etc., low education, low health, unemployment etc.
4. TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS: lack of modern cultural
practices, poverty, growers unable to buy quality seeds,
fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides or use tractor and
threshers etc.

Objectives
1. To evaluate various organic carbon sources: animal manures (cattle, sheep,
poultry) versus plant residues (cereals, pulses, vegetables, trees) on growth
analysis, productivity and profitability of field crops
2. To evaluate different forms of organic carbon sources (fresh, dry, biochar,
compost, ash) on growth analysis, productivity and profitability of field crops
3. To study the impact of integrated nutrients management [OCS applied in
various combination with (+) and without (-) chemical and bio-fertilizers] on
growth analysis, productivity and profitability of field crops

7-RESULTS
Conclusions
1. The use of different organic carbon sources were found beneficial than control in terms of better
growth, higher productivity & profitability.
2. Organic carbon in the form of animal manure was better than plant residues.
3. Among the animal manures; poultry manure was found to be the best organic source for improving
growth and yield.
4. Among the plant residues, legume residue was found to be the best organic source for improving
growth and yield as compared to trees, vegetables and cereal residues.
5. Interestingly, the residues of trees (peach & paper mulberry) and vegetables (onion & garlic) were
found better than cereal residues.
6. Organic carbon sources in the form of compost and biochar were better than organic sources used in
the residues (dry) form.
7. Integrated use of organic carbon sources along with chemical and bio-fertilizers improve crop
productivity and profitability under different cropping systems in arid and semiarid climates.

arid and semiarid climates in developing countries
Recommendations
• Evaluation of different crops varieties (root: shoot, LAI, WUE, FUE etc.)
• Crop residues management & green manuring
• Animal and poultry manures management
• Bio-fertilizers (Rhizobia, Mycorrhizae, Azospirillum, Bacillus, Pseudomonas,
Trichoderma, PSB etc.)
• Moisture conservation measures (mulching, deep tillage practices)
• Increasing fertilizer and water use efficiencies (increase in yield)
• Intercropping & crop rotation (legumes and pulses crops)
• Farmers training & field days (important)

  • 3. Problems in drylands 1-CLIMATIC FACTORS: insufficient and unpredictable (time & duration) rainfall, high temperature, high evaporation 2. SOIL FACTORS: less moisture, less nutrients, less vegetation, low organic matter, sandy soils with high wind erosion 3. SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS: low yield, food security problem, lack of facilities of transport, markets & storage etc., low education, low health, unemployment etc. 4. TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS: lack of modern cultural practices, poverty, growers unable to buy quality seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides or use tractor and threshers etc. Less attention by the GOVERNMENT BIG CHALLENGE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
  • 4. Objectives 1. To evaluate various organic carbon sources: animal manures (cattle, sheep, poultry) versus plant residues (cereals, pulses, vegetables, trees) on growth analysis, productivity and profitability of field crops 2. To evaluate different forms of organic carbon sources (fresh, dry, biochar, compost, ash) on growth analysis, productivity and profitability of field crops 3. To study the impact of integrated nutrients management [OCS applied in various combination with (+) and without (-) chemical and bio-fertilizers] on growth analysis, productivity and profitability of field crops

  • 13. Conclusions 1. The use of different organic carbon sources were found beneficial than control in terms of better growth, higher productivity & profitability. 2. Organic carbon in the form of animal manure was better than plant residues. 3. Among the animal manures; poultry manure was found to be the best organic source for improving growth and yield. 4. Among the plant residues, legume residue was found to be the best organic source for improving growth and yield as compared to trees, vegetables and cereal residues. 5. Interestingly, the residues of trees (peach & paper mulberry) and vegetables (onion & garlic) were found better than cereal residues. 6. Organic carbon sources in the form of compost and biochar were better than organic sources used in the residues (dry) form. 7. Integrated use of organic carbon sources along with chemical and bio-fertilizers improve crop productivity and profitability under different cropping systems in arid and semiarid climates. Integrated nutrients management is key to success in arid and semiarid climates in developing countries
  • 14. Recommendations • Evaluation of different crops varieties (root: shoot, LAI, WUE, FUE etc.) • Crop residues management & green manuring • Animal and poultry manures management • Bio-fertilizers (Rhizobia, Mycorrhizae, Azospirillum, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Trichoderma, PSB etc.) • Moisture conservation measures (mulching, deep tillage practices) • Increasing fertilizer and water use efficiencies (increase in yield) • Intercropping & crop rotation (legumes and pulses crops) • Farmers training & field days (important) Integrated nutrients management is key to success in arid and semiarid climates in developing countries
