It was based on the Professional standards for accomplished teaching of languages and cultures developed by the AFMLTA in 2005. The standards are designed to reflect accomplished teaching practice and are intended to guide teacher development over their careers. They include standards for teaching and program standards. The standards for teaching describe valued teaching practices, while the program standards outline characteristics of effective languages programs.
