• Make distinctions about what it is and what it is
not.
• Compare and contrast to things your audience
probably already knows.
Be CONCISE
• Choose words carefully
▫ Please repeat that again.
▫ These two are both alike.
▫ The pens are identically the same.
▫ She arrived at 8am this morning.
• Don’t waste words!
Be COMPLETE
• Use advance organizers
▫ Tell us where you’re taking us in your speech.
▫ What are some words you can use?
 For example, “There are three things you need to
know about…” and keep it to three things. Don’t add
a fourth or fifth.
Be CORRECT
• We’re trusting you to be the expert.
• If you don’t know for sure, don’t say it.
• Identify sources correctly.
• Give credit where credit is due.
Be CONCRETE
• Give us specifics.
• Not just candy…gourmet jelly beans,
• rich, dark chocolate.
• Help us make mental pictures.
• Provide physical details.
CONNECT
• Analyze your audience
• What are the demographics?
• What will they know about your topic already?
• What level of cultural literacy will you be dealing
with?
Narrow down your subject
• Limit your subject in time.
• Limit your subject in space.
• Limit your subject in extent.
• Now divide it in half.
▫ This is also a good technique for making your
essay writing stronger.
