The Industrial Revolution began in England in the late 18th century and spread to other European countries and later to the United States and Japan. It fundamentally changed production from a largely agricultural economy to one based on new manufacturing processes powered by steam engines. This led to economic, political, and social impacts including the growth of factories, mass production, urbanization, and a new industrial working class. It also increased global trade and national economic and political power.
