Jesse Pink-M The Man Who Changed My Life
In my life, I saw people get mistreated. I watched it happen. Now, I understand how it feels. Here at

couldn't focus on my classes and grades. Luke was big. Luke mange to be an individual who has an
over–inflated sense of self worth, compounded by a low level of intelligence, behaving ridiculously
in front of colleagues with no sense of how moronic he appears. He was into fight's, movies, and
bulling me. He first notices me when a couple of my friends started to talk and hang out with Luke
and left me behind. Luke saw how much of a loser I was and started to pick on me. Luckily for me, I
made friends with his old ones Skyler, Walter, and Mike. I started to talk to them. They told me that
he left them, used them to get something. They were sad. Then one day he saw me talking to them.

The Theme Of Forbidden In The Duchess Of Malfi
Webster's play The Duchess of Malfi is a tragedy about a forbidden love but more specifically a
forbidden marriage, which leads to the deaths of the both the lovers and many other characters of the
play. The theme of the forbidden is also portrayed through the Machiavellian qualities of certain
characters as they lie and are deceitful. There is also the use of the motif of fruit which represents
the forbidden. Lastly, the forbidden is shown using women. These are also shown in other pieces of
literature, such as Paradise Lost, written by John Milton, however both writers portray the theme of
forbidden in different ways.
The use of the fruit as a motive fit into the theme of the forbidden as the Duchess eats the apricots
which forces her into pregnancy. In the quotation "How greedily she eats them!" with the use of the
exclamatory sentence it suggests that the Duchess is enjoying the forbiddance within the fruit which
ends up leading her to a big problem. It foreshadows the future events due to the fact that during the
16th century it was believed that apricots are what caused labour and this play supports this as the
Duchess went into labour straight after eating the apricots. It shows that the Duchess wasn't able to
recognise the risk of the fruit, but the enjoyment of the fruit is what lead her to carry on eating. The
Duchess seems to be chasing after the forbiddance within things and to explore them. However, this
is what causes the death of others as she is wanted to

Introduction Marks & Spencer is a British retailer with over 800 stores in more than 30 countries

In 2006 as stated by the Guardian, Chief Executive of Marks & Spencer Stuart Rose wanted to
stretch the company brand, for example he considered selling food online as part of a plan to
become a multi–channel retailer, this was obviously to keep up with the competitive market such as
Asda. Asda and Marks & Spencer appeal to different markets in terms of social class and other
demographics; this has a major influence on the way they respond to current issues.
In response to the current cheap clothing industry supermarkets have increasingly over the last few
years caught up with fashion trends, helping them to rival the high street clothing stores with their
less expensive versions. Marks & Spencer is no exception to this and they have bought their
clothing ranges up to date to keep up with the latest trends and to keep their customers interested.
"Consumer purchases are influenced by cultural, social, personal and psychological characteristics.
For the most part, marketers cannot control such factors, but they must take them into account".
Armstrong, G and Kotler, P (2007) Marketing: An Introduction, 8th Ed. Prentice Hall.
Technological Factors
Technology is vital in the retail market. "Companies must manage their brands carefully. First the
brands position must be continuously communicated to consumers. Major brand marketers often
spend huge amounts on advertising to create brand awareness and to build preference and loyalty".

John Stuart Mills Argument On Happiness
Do you agree or disagree with John Stuart Mills argument?Happiness will come to you without
dwelling it.I agree with John Stuart Mills argument that we should not search for happiness. The
enjoyments of life are sufficient to make it a pleasant thing.Enjoying your life, doing the things that
make you happy should make you feel happy. If you search for happiness it wont come to you
because happiness comes to you the moment you don't expect it to come. Happiness should not be
searched for.
You should find happiness by the things you are surrounded by.You should be happy by having your
family and friends around you.People search for happiness but they do not achieve their goal
because happiness should be around the little things you have.

Mgm Studios And Stuart Little
Whether the story is about a tiny mouse or a gigantic ogre, there is magic in storytelling and
bringing to life characters that relate their challenges of being unique. By comparing and contrasting
two films, Shrek (2001) by DreamWorks Studios and Stuart Little (1999) by Sony Studios, the
reader will better understand the dynamics of successful family entertainment with regards to the
"Disney model". Over the years family appropriate content, style and marketing has allowed for
non–Disney produced films to achieve success, but will they ever be as profitable as the Disney
films? The Disney model has created a culture of mega–entertainment and expectations, so that
more family entertainment from non–Disney companies makes for a greater variety of films, but not
a guarantee of the synergy and ancillary markets to support the films.
The giant company that started as Disney, all began with Walt Disney arriving in California in 1923.
Earlier in Kansas City, he had made a cartoon called "Alice's Wonderland" which would soon be the
pilot for his series called "Alice's Comedies". Disney was contracted by a distributor, M. J. Winkler,
on October 16, 1923, which was the official start of one the largest entertainment companies to ever
exist, Walt Disney Company. Disney went on to produce many short and full length films suited for
family entertainment. Their early full length animation movies in the 1950's that captured family
viewing were Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland

Cool Hand Luke Movie Critique: Courage and Self-Respect
Cool Hand Luke directed by the reputable Stuart Rosenberg and nominated for four Oscars is a
tragic tale of an ordinary individual rising up the courage to oppose the establishment, thus
becoming a hero. Cool Hand Luke weaves a rich tapestry of the prison life on both sides of the
establishment and the injustices of the system. In short Cool Hand Luke is a movie that focuses on
the struggles of a single courageous man and his quest for freedom. After being incarcerated for a
petty crime and sent to a chain–gang jail, Lucas Jackson (Paul Newman) has risen up the ranks of
the establishment and become the prisoners' idol as well as the guard's enemy. Jacksons's contrasting

Walter Fitzalan Personality
Born about the year 1108 and growing up at Oswestry, Walter FitzAlan knew wealth, privilege, and
warfare. And he was quick to capitalize on his background. In his late twenties, Walter joined forces
with some of the most powerful Norman figures in England, engaging a series of battles in which
the throne of England was at stake. On one side was the claimant Stephen of Blois, and opposing
him Matilda (called "Maud"), the daughter of recently deceased King Henry I. In these contests,
Walter FitzAlan linked up with Scotland's King David and also with one of King Henry's sons
named Reginald Dunstanville, a half–brother of Maud [10]. Although their cause on behalf of Maud
was eventually lost, firm relationships between Walter FitzAlan, Reginald ... Show more content on

David granted Walter the lands of "Kerkert" and "Strathgryffe" (much of the land of Renfrewshire)
and it was here, in Paisley, that Walter established his home. He built a structure called Blackhall
Manor that served him and his descendants for generations [12]. Blackhall served as an ancestral
home for subsequent generations of his family who served as hereditary stewards of Scotland. In the
centuries to follow these hereditary stewards ascended to the Scottish throne as kings, adopting the
surname Stewart for themselves and ultimately forming the Stuart dynasty that ruled Scotland,
Ireland, and England during the 17th century [13]. Thus Blackhall Manor can be thought a cradle of
kings, as the Stuart dynasty of Scotland and England find their beginnings in Walter FitzAlan at
Blackhall. Also at Paisley, Walter endowed a Cluniac monastery in Paisley in Renfrewshire,
importing monks from Shropshire, which monastery grew into Paisley Abbey in Walter's lifetime. In
later years Walter would be buried

John Stuart Mill's Philosophy of Happiness Essay
John Stuart Mill's Philosophy of Happiness
Along with other noted philosophers, John Stuart Mill developed the nineteenth century philosophy
known as Utilitarianism – the contention that man should judge everything in life based upon its
ability to promote the greatest individual happiness. While Bentham, in particular, is acknowledged
as the philosophy's founder, it was Mill who justified the axiom through reason. He maintained that
because human beings are endowed with the ability for conscious thought, they are not merely
satisfied with physical pleasures; humans strive to achieve pleasures of the mind as well. Once man
has ascended to this high intellectual level, he desires to stay there, never descending to the lower
level of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Utilitarianism, Mill noted, "utility includes not solely the pursuit of happiness, but the prevention
or mitigation of unhappiness" (Mill 12).
The pursuit of pleasure has also been condemned by critics as being little more than the promotion
of one's own interests, with no regard to the happiness of others. Mill disputes this as being narrow–
minded, clarifying that the pleasure principle which forms the foundation for utilitarianism, "what is
right in conduct, is not the agent's own happiness, but that of all concerned" (Mill 16). With this
acknowledgment, however, comes the criticism that people cannot possibly be motivated by
something as satisfying the collective good of society. Mill countered this by pointing out, "The
utilitarian morality does recognize in human beings the power of sacrificing their own greatest good
for the good of others" (Mill 16). To the objection that pleasure is an acceptable end is contrary to
Christian principles because it is "godless," Mill states, "If it be a true belief that God desires, above
all things, the happiness of his creatures, and that this was his purpose in their creation, utility is not
only not a godless doctrine, but more profoundly religious than any other" (Mill 21).
Mill's pleasure principle was disputed by both philosophers and theologians because of its apparent
lack of association to a code of morality. To this, Mill contended that there can

How Does John Stuart Mill Define Happiness
Argumentative Essay Happiness is when someone is joyful and enjoys life right? John Stuart Mill
disagrees and says that you can not be self–conscious and attain happiness. He also stated that the
pursuit of happiness is not itself. I disagree with John Stuart Mill's theory of happiness. The reason I
do not agree is because I believe that happiness is what you enjoy not anyone else. For example, in
the article, he states that if you let your "self–consciousness exhaust themselves" you will attain
happiness. The reason I disagree with this because people have different opinions on stuff. In
addition, other people believe that this theory is correct or believable. This is because some people
see happiness as caring for other and never

Essay on Marriage in the Victorian Age
Many people believe that marriage is important in this day and age, but it holds little significance
compared to the importance of marriage in the Victorian era. In the Victorian era women were to get
married to a man of the same or a better social status, be good wives, and be a mother to her
husband's children. Very few marriages started with love, but a woman's life is not complete without
being married. Over time, the role of married women has evolved a great deal and they now have
rights and privileges. John Stuart Mill was one of the great thinkers of the Victorian era, and his
essay The Subjection of Women tells how few privileges women had and that they were slaves to
their husbands. He also says that women are their own people and ... Show more content on

Feminists ought to get a good whipping. Were woman to 'unsex' themselves by claiming equality
with men, they would become the most hateful, heathen and disgusting of beings and would surely
perish without male protection (Moore).
There are many different reasons why women got married in the Victorian era. First and foremost
was due to the lack of education. Women were usually uneducated or were taught only basic
responsibilities. If a woman had too much education, Victorians thought that it would weaken their
womb and deform their bodies (Moore). From early childhood, girls were taught that they should
get married and have children when they get older (Hamilton). The little education that women got
was received mostly at home. There were some boarding schools, but there was no university for
women to attend. The studies that a girl would learn were French, drawing, dancing, music, and how
to use globes. If the boarding school was interested in teaching any practical skills, girls would learn
plain sewing as well as embroidery, and accounts. Through knowledge and education a woman
could have had a better sense of self–worth and pride. On the contrary, boys were well educated at
home by a tutor until they were old enough to attend public

Analysis Of The Film Cool Hand Luke
Cool Hand Luke Film Analysis The film, Cool Hand Luke, directed by Stuart Rosenberg and
produced by Gordon Carroll, was released in November 1967. It is an American prison drama film
about a former soldier who is sent to jail for taking the heads off of parking meters. Luke, the
protagonist, is sentenced to two years in a chain gang prison ran by severe guardians. If the
prisoners violate the rules it results in spending the night in the "box", which is a small room with
limited air and limited space to move. Most of them follow every rule, while Luke is alienated at the
prison. He does not take the regulations seriously, which always gets him into trouble. This film
presents several examples of religious symbolism and themes which will be analyzed through the
character of Luke, which is often applied in the film to add depth to his character. In Cool Hand
Luke, there are some scenes in which the theme of crucifixion is depicted. One of the scenes is when
Luke ingests fifty eggs, which "represents the souls of the earth Christ died for on the cross" (Christ
Imagery in Cool Hand Luke). This happen when all the prisoners gather around him while Dragline
served him the eggs. Luke accepted the challenge to prove himself to the inmates and to get the
money from all the bets made on him. Whenever he finishes eating, he lies on the table with his
arms extended. This scene alludes and emphasizes to Christ crucifixion. Even though the audience

Once More Of The Lake
"Once More to the Lake" is a short essay written by E.B. White for his column in the New Yorker,
One Man's Meat. "Once More to the Lake" is a story about a father who is taking his son to his
childhood vacation spot. On the trip, the father finds himself inside the memories of his past.
Throughout the trip, the father finds differences in the lake from when he was a child. While much
of E.B. White 's essay is set in the present, the author explores his own mortality as he looks both to
the past and to the future. Elwyn Brooks White was born on July 11, 1899, in Mount Vernon, New
York, and died in 1985. Throughout his lifetime, White had traveled to many places and held several
jobs ranging from reporter to army private. He became a multifaceted writer but primarily wrote
style manual, fiction, poetry, and children's literature. Throughout his life, White was surrounded by
many other talented writers including Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, and Stephen Leacock.
White wrote the well–known children's stories Stuart Little and Charlotte's Web. Many of White's
works were accomplished with the help of his wife, former editor, Katharine Angell. "Once More to
the Lake" was published in 1941 along with many other works on which he and Katharine had
collaborated. The year 1941 was the onset of World War II in America. Other countries had been at
war for some time. In 1941, however, the war became increasingly eminent for Americans. E.B.

Comparing John Stuart Mill's The Subjection of Women and...
Comparing John Stuart Mill's The Subjection of Women and Florence Nightingale's Cassandra
For thousands of years, women have struggled under the domination of men. In a great many
societies around the world, men hold the power and women have to fight for their roles as equals in
these patriarchal societies. Florence Nightingale wrote about such a society in her piece, Cassandra,
and John Stuart Mill wrote further on the subject in his essay The Subjection of Women. These two
pieces explore the same basic idea, but there are differences as well. While they both recognize its
presence, Mill blames the subjection of women on custom, and Nightingale blames it on society.
These appear to be different arguments, but they may be more ... Show more content on

He feels that because women have been in this position for so many years, it would feel irregular to
deviate from it. "The subjection of women to men being a universal custom, any departure from it
quite naturally appears unnatural" (Mill 1157). As he continues, he reveals his thoughts on the
matter to the reader: "this relic of the past is discordant with the future, and must necessarily
disappear" (Mill 1159). Mill explores many aspects of the issue. He attempts to uncover the
differences between the sexes to provide maybe another solution to the problem, but to no avail,
"nothing final can be known" (Mill 1162); nothing is as strongly stated as when he places the blame
on custom. Later in his essay, while exploring the systems of past societies, he comes to the same
conclusion as earlier. Only this time, he states that there has been some improvement in the system
as time went by; however, equality has not yet been reached. He believes that the small increase in
power over time is enough to suggest that equality is the solution: "Through all...human history, the
condition of women has been approaching nearer to equality with men. This does not itself prove
that the assimilation must go on to complete equality; but it assuredly affords some presumption that
such is the case" (Mill 1160). This quote is yet another contribution to the blame of custom. In the
past, societies lacked equality

Lansdowne Research Paper
The Lansdowne Dining Room (1766–1769), as its name suggests, is a dining room from the
Lansdowne house located at the southwest corner of Berkeley Square, in London. This house
actually belonged to two unpopular British statesmen of the eighteenth century, John Stuart (1713–
1792) and William Petty Fitzmaurice (1737–1805). Indeed, Stuart was the third earl of Bute (earl
meaning "a British nobleman ranking above a viscount and below a marquess") until 1763 when he
left in political disgrace and sold the unfinished house to Fitzmaurice who was the second earl of
Shelbourne and was created first marquess of Lansdowne in 1784. He was despised by many
contemporaries such as Henry Fox but his efforts were appreciated abroad as he favored the

In fact, the room contains a lot of classical elements such as the light colors, delicate ornament,
slender proportions, columns and more details influenced by the Roman and Greek culture, which
makes this room fit into the English Neoclassical period (1770–1820).
Indeed, Robert Adam (1728–92) was the famous architect and designer of the Lansdowne house. He
was one of the architects and designers who brought seriousness to the revival of classicism in
England as he studied the Greek and Roman antiquities, traveled to Italy and worked to reproduce
exactly the original models. He would go to specific temples and specific places in Italy and would
draw detailed drawings of them to keep a record of what he saw and experienced. He is actually a
Scottish architect who worked in partnership with his brother James Adam in their father's firm.

Robert Adam brought to England "a virtuoso vocabulary of complex interior forms that had not been

In Mill's "Utilitarianism," he argues that the principle of utility is the foundation of all morality. In
other words, the greatest happiness principle says to choose the decision or action that in return
creates the greatest amount of happiness for all that that are involved. He says that every other
principle we follow are principles that we take into our lives based on the fact that they will
hopefully help us to better or quantify our happiness. Abortion satisfies John Stuart Mill's
description of Utilitarianism. Women get abortions for a variety of different reasons. Different
reasons for getting an abortion range from health concerns and rape, to simply not being ready to
take on the responsibility of having, providing, and taking care of another life. Whatever the reason
may be, abortion is not wrong. According to Utilitarianism, one should do what will make them and
everyone around them the happiest. Now, one could argue that having an abortion may make the
other people around the women unhappy. The simple reply to this is that a women's decision to have
an abortion has nothing to do with other people. Other people will not be going through the
pregnancy and will not have to take care of another human life. Just because one doesn't agree with
a women's decision to have an abortion does not mean that the decision to have an abortion will
make other peoples lives unhappy.

Stuart Little Film Techniques
The film Stuart Little starts off when the Littles go to an orphanage looking to adopt a brother for

but throughout the film not only George, but also all the Littles welcome Stuart into their home and
fight to keep him there. Throughout the film, sound, camera angles, and film shots help to show the
dominate theme of friendship. First, sound is one of the devices used to show friendship throughout
Stuart Little. One example of sound would be in the opening scene. The Little's are sending George
off to school while happy, upbeat music is playing in the back ground. George leaves the house
smiling and thrilled that he will be meeting his new brother shortly after school. The Little's home is

the first time Stuart is getting ready in the Little's home and by having his own bathroom set such as

The Baseline Leadership Survey For The First Cohort Essay

Leadership Survey
When analyzing the baseline leadership survey for the first cohort, we specifically looked at
baseline frequency distributions of the "I feel like a Leader" scenarios, most Littles reported feeling
more like a leader at home and with friends. On a scale of one to five, one being "Not at all like me"
and five being "A lot like me", many girls indicated that they were less likely to feel like a leader at
school. As seen in table 8 below, 14 percent of Littles reported that they did not feel like a leader at
school, compared to that of 11.6 percent who did. Conversely, 7 percent of Littles reported that they
did not feel like a leader with friends, compared to the 16.3 percent that did. Lastly, when assessing
Littles who felt like a leader at home, 11.6 percent reported that they felt less like a leader, compared
to the 23.3 percent who did.
When analyzing the end of program leadership survey for the first cohort, most Littles reported

In today's business industry, there are a number of management and external factors that each
organisation has to deal with during day–to–day circumstances. These factors include topic areas
such as technology, sustainability, leadership and management and the common environmental
factors. On a global scale, every organisation will act differently which brings the number of
competitive elements to rise. Within my essay I will discuss these issues in relation to Marks and

selling of clothing, home goods, and luxury food products making it a major competitor to other
retailers.

The most recent figures available show M&S's UK business turning over £8.9bn last year; compared
to John Lewis' and Waitrose £9bn achieved this year. Compared to John Lewis, M&S is still playing
catch–up with the re–launch of its website. This involves simple marketing techniques including;
visitors being greeted by eye–catching images that broadcast the sites new offers, again a manager's
position to overcome and deal with. Thus overall resulting in an increase in customer brand loyalty,
a boost in profit, and the possibility of increasing their short–term market share.
Doing a SWOT analysis on M&S indicates their winning strengths such as their comfort of the past
years being one of the most awarded companies in the industry, therefore their brand identity and
customer loyalty lying at a constant profitable level. M&S are also one of the most sustainable
supply chain with one of the most efficiently built organisation in the industry. Weakness's they need
to consider are the high cost of the products offered in comparison to rivals. Also for business and
marketing strategies, the necessity of the new marketing strategy focusing on the younger audience
is a big concentrated factor to be working on due to their current middle–aged target market. This
has been dealt with concentrating on their younger gender packaging, making it gender–neutral
solely down to recent customer complaints of it being to gender objectified, being marketed

Marks and Spencer Merger with Sainsbury Essay

Strategic Change
Unit 3 1. Background to organisational strategic change.
Marks and Spencer plc is a UK–based company. Many people regard the business as a national
institution. It is lovingly called "M&S" and "Marks and Sparks". M&S is known as a best
retailer. There are over 370 Marks & Spencer stores throughout the UK that sell clothing, food
and household goods. The core of its retailing business is clothing, particularly women's. Over 80%
of Marks & Spencer's stores are sited in traditional high street locations. More than 10 million

M&S clothing could also be sold through Sainsbury's stores, providing a powerful boost to the
supermarket's non–food business. Last night one City analyst said there was a "lot of logic
surrounding the deal" and suggested a move could come soon.
He said: "M&S have a fantastic property portfolio, there would be huge synergies between the
two companies. M&S is strong in non–food, Sainsbury is strong in food and Sainsbury is
desperately trying to get into non–food so a deal is a possibility. It would also help to find a
successor to Sir Stuart Rose."
Despite Rose persuading the City that the company's profits are going to take a hit while the
recession lasts, he has enraged some shareholders by breaching the City's best–practice standards
with his twin roles of chairman and chief executive.
City investors and local authority pension funds that hold shares in M&S have demanded that
the company appoint an independent chairman or a new chief executive by next summer, and it is
now widely expected that Rose will step down long before the mid–2011 deadline set last year. A
potential tie–up between the two has been rumbling ever since Rose let slip at a retail conference in
2007 that his shareholders would consider him "an idiot" if he did not think about mounting a
takeover, before adding: "Watch this space."
But since then, the fortunes of the two have changed. While M&S is struggling against a

Similarities Between Mill And Nietzsche
Introduction
In today's paper, I will be discussing Mill and Nietzsche. These two have differing opinions on what
the biggest threat to society are: Mill argues that Freedom of Speech is essential to finding the truth
(Mill, 2006, p. P12)– so even controversial opinions should be listened to. He fears that the tyranny
of the majority could mean the Truth could be lost because alternative opinions are not listened to.
The other threat to society to Mill is that women have fewer rights then men – such as voting – he
believes women should be allowed to have the same opportunities (John Stuart Mill; Alan Ryan,
2006). In contrast, Nietzsche believes the biggest threat to society is the assumption that morality is
natural. Morality is dangerous because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nietzsche's argument about morality is, largely, about rejecting Christianity (Frederick Nietzsche;
Douglas Smith, 2008, p. P203). His statements about morality can be argued is a tool to critique
organised religion in general. In contrast, Mill's goal is to make society stronger through learning the
Truth (Mill, 2006, p. P12) and allowing equality (John Stuart Mill; Alan Ryan, 2006). The two's
goals are different hence their conclusions are quite different.
Mill's opinion on biggest threat to society
Firstly, like I stated in the introduction, Mill believes that the biggest threat to society is that
Freedom of Speech being stifled and women not having the same rights and opportunities as men.
This is a threat to society for several reasons. Mill pointed out that "the opinion which it is attempted
to suppress by authority may possibly be true" (Frederick Nietzsche; Douglas Smith, 2008, p. P386)
which indicates that an unpopular opinion could be true – ignoring this opinion would mean the
public would be pursuing something which is incorrect – this would clearly damage society. Mill
also stated that "though the silenced opinion be an error, it may, and very commonly does, contain a
portion of truth; and since the general or prevailing opinion on any subject is rarely or never the
whole truth, it is

The Consequentialist View Of Utilitarianism By John Stuart...
The Negative Side Although I have stated how the theories of these philosophers in a way go in
accordance on how using performance–enhancing drugs is morally right they also hold small facts
on how they could also be viewed both ways. The theory of utilitarianism that John Stuart Mills
brought up has been criticized for many reasons. Critics declare that it does not provide adequate
protection for individual rights, as well that not everything can be measured by the same standard,
and that happiness is more complex than reflected by the theory. Immanuel Kant is one of those who
criticizes the Utilitarianism and argues how the Consequentialist view, by contrast, disputes that
moral value lies not in our actions but in the consequences. It is also to be known that the
utilitarianism of John Stuart Mill is one of the most influential forms of ... Show more content on

Rhetorical Analysis Of Once More To The Lake
In the text "Once More to the Lake" author E.B. White focuses on appealing to fathers or even
possibly parents in general. The text is eloquently written to ultimately reiterate that change is
constant and at some point in life all people will eventually die. His primary goal of this text is to
enjoy the moments in one's life before life is over. A nostalgic tone is used throughout when
comparing his childhood memories to the current memories he is making with his own son. White is
effective in illustrating his purpose by using techniques such as logos, ethos, pathos, and imagery to
encourage his audience to be aware that their own lives are inevitably growing older each day. In

He refers multiple times to fishing terms that the general audience may not be knowledgeable of
such as "spinner" ("Once" para. 1), "hellgrammite" ("Once" para. 5), and "bass" ("Once" para. 5).
These terms not only classify White as a fisherman but also suggest the importance or impact that
fishing and the lake have on his life. By using logos in his writing, he gains credibility with his
intended audience. Although ethos and logos are important modes as well, this text is most effective
due to White's continuous use of pathos. His thesis statement suggests the urge to return to his
childhood memories, "...this feeling got so strong I bought myself a couple of bass hooks and a
spinner and returned to the lake where we used to go, for a week's fishing and to re–visit old haunts"
("Once" para. 1).The audience is also evoked with anticipation to what will happen later. A good
example of this is "I took along my son, who had never had any fresh water up his nose and who
had seen lily pads only from train windows" ("Once" para. 2). The audience is left asking how the
trip with his son will compare to his own memories. White goes on to describe in intricate detail his
memory of the lake, cabins, and scenery. He uses visual imagery to allow the audience to place
themselves in the setting he has described. "White wants to emphasize the permanence of some
things, or at least the memory of some things, despite the continual change that happens in the
world"

According to Delaney, Thoreau's subtle humor and individualistic philosophy has influenced White
and it can be seen through his writing, including his short fiction. Delaney also said that White never
lost his sense of humor even when dealing with depressing subjects. Most characteristic of White's
short stories is their strange mixture of humor and emotional distress. In this way he resembles his
friend James Thurber. Thurber was a major influence on White, just as White was on him. Delaney
also went on to say that they were both admirers of Henry James, and that older writer's high literary
standards and dedication to his craft are obviously reflected in White's short stories. White has also
been praised for his use of prose style. This makes his writing flow easily and seem almost

John Stuart Mill 's On Liberty And Utilitarianism Essay
This essay examines and inspects liberty and order conflict based on the writings of philosopher
John Stuart Mill, titled On Liberty and Utilitarianism. We will discuss how his philosophical views
on equality as fundamental to what it means to be human. We will interpret John Stuart Mill's
theorist view on equality as fundamental to the good or bad functioning of the state? The question
and debate we would also raise will be, is equality be integral the arrangements of power? Lastly,
we would argue the theorist's approach to liberty fundamentally influenced the way we view
equality in the 21st century. In John Stuart Mill works of On Liberty, the piece focuses and concerns
common and social freedom or, to take a gander at it from the opposite perspective, the nature and
points of confinement of the power that can honest to goodness be practiced by society over the
person. In John Stuart Mill works of Utilitarianism, it offers a possibility for a first standard of
ethical quality, a rule that gives us a model recognizing good and bad. The utilitarian applicant is the
guideline of utility. We will convey works from both pieces and examine his theoretical/
philosophical values of equality. Despite the fact that all may have concurred that an activity 's
results for the general satisfaction and happiness were to direct its rightness or misleading quality,

Describe and assess the explicit (and sometimes merely implicit) notions of freedom and unfreedom
we find in the texts we have read by Marx, Mill and Freud. Use the esoteric traditions we have
examined thus far (from the Book of Job to Plato) as a comparative yardstick, or point of reference,
but without letting them take over the foreground in your paper –– the latter should be reserved for
these three figures. Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, and John Stuart Mill are three authors who tackle
the topic of freedom in unique ways, but their messages are fundamentally the same and continue
the ideas that we encountered in the esoteric texts as well as in The Matrix: . First, we have Karl
Marx's Capital: Critique of Political Economy and The Communist Manifesto, where we encounter
the proletariat, or the working–class people regarded collectively. In these two texts, the latter of
which was co–authored by Frederick Engels, we learn that the proletariat is enslaved just like the
people in the matrix. And just like the people in the matrix, the proletariat is oblivious to this limit
on its freedom. That is why in Karl Marx's view, unfreedom is what we are living in now. According
to him, many people think that abolishing private property through communism is what will infringe
on our freedom, but that is not the case. Specifically, in The Communist Manifesto Marx states,
"You are horrified at our intending to do away with private property. But in your existing society,

John Stuart Mills Romanticism And Radicalism
John Stuart Mill was born in 1806 and was the eldest son of James Mill and Harriet Barrow. James
Mill taught John Greek at the age of three and Latin at age eight. By the age of 14, John had read
many Greek and Latin classics. He had studied world history, logic and mathematics and had
mastered the basics of economic theory, all of which was part of his father's plan to make John
Stuart Mill a young advocate of the views of the philosophical radicals. By his late teens, Mill spent
many hours editing Jeremy Bentham's manuscripts, and he threw himself into the work of the
philosophic radicals. John also founded a number of intellectual societies and began to contribute to
periodicals, including the Westminster Review, founded by Bentham and James Mill. In 1823, his
father secured him a junior position in the East India Company, and he, like his father before him,
rose in the ranks, eventually taking his father's position of chief examiner. In his twenties, John
Stuart Mill felt the influence of Historicism and Romanticism. This led him to begin searching for a
new philosophic radicalism that would be more sensitive to the limits on reform imposed by culture
and history and would emphasize the cultivation of our humanity, including the disposition of
feeling and imagination.
John Stuart Mill influenced the shape of nineteenth century greatly through British thought and
political discourse. James Mill, John Stuart Mill's father, and Jeremy Bentham led the "Philosophic

If people around the world would adopt the philosophy of John Stuart Mill, the world might become
a more intelligent, and therefore tolerant, place in which to live. John Stuart Mill espoused beliefs
on the subjection of women and theism, which, if embraced by the majority of people in the world,
would put a stop to much of the oppression the world, now endures. Mill was a philosopher who
took the unusual stance that women should be considered equal to men in all respects and given the
same opportunities as men. He had very strong feelings on the subject, and in his essay entitled "The
Subjection of Women" he states, ... the principle which regulates the existing social relations
between the two sexes––the legal subordination of one sex to the other–4s wrong in itself, and now
one of the chief hindrances to human improvement; and that it ought to be replaced by a principle of
perfect equality, admitting no power or privilege on the one side, nor disability on the other.1 [1] In
this essay Mill admits the difficulty of achieving this, but defends his ideas by showing that the
position of authority held by men is not a result of the comparison of several kinds of systems being
tried and its having been found to be the best system, but that it is the only system that has ever been
tried. As a result, one cannot not use past experience to say that women are incapable of being in
positions of authority. In this essay Mill states, In the first

Queens have always meant to govern well, be perfect, and be loved by everyone. Most of them were

Mill On Liberty
John Stuart Mill writes "On Liberty" as an attempt to not only define liberty, but also define the
freedom an individual holds. Mill's definition of liberty can be summarized as an individual free to
do as they please as long as they are not harming another individual or infringing on another
individual's freedom. In the mind of John Stuart Mill "over himself, over his own body and mind,
the individual is sovereign." (Mill, 13) However, through the progression of the essay, it can be seen
that Mill's outline of individual liberty does not produce a healthy public life. This conclusion is
apparent in the vagueness of what constitutes as harm, the fact that liberty applies only to certain
groups, and the blurred line of the State's control on the life of an individual. From the beginning of
the essay, Mill claims that an individual has freedom of opinion and action. ... Show more content

While Mill's definition of liberty may seem acceptable at first glance, a question of what constitutes

Art George Washington Essay
Gilbert Stuart's portrait of George Washington is called the "Lansdowne" painted in the 1800, it is
located in the American Wing; room Anthony W. and Lulu C. Wang Galleries of Eighteen–century
American Art. It is an oil canvas painting displayed upright against the wall near the corridor,
dimension are 48 x 37 in. This painting was lent to the museum by Mr. and Mrs. Michael Stienhardt
in 2008. Alongside the George Washington portrait there are other portraits by Gilbert Stuart's, such

was made for Ms. William Bingham of Pennsylvania and another is the one displayed at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art.i The portrait shows the movement of the ratification of the Jay Treaty
and the transatlantic political alliance brought together during George Washington's second term.i
Similar material painted around this time in 1817 was John Trumbull's oil canvas "Declaration of
Independence," located in the United States Capitol Rotunda. ii Gilbert Stuart was a renowned artist
who was known for capturing the inner character, which he believed was reflected in their physical
features. He believed Washington features indicated a man with great passion.i The George
Washington portrait brought Gilbert Stuart fame. This period in time a person like George
Washington would give the artist more sitters.iii In addition, reproducing this portrait gave Stuart
more money, either painting it with his own two hands or having

  • 5. The Theme Of Forbidden In The Duchess Of Malfi Webster's play The Duchess of Malfi is a tragedy about a forbidden love but more specifically a forbidden marriage, which leads to the deaths of the both the lovers and many other characters of the play. The theme of the forbidden is also portrayed through the Machiavellian qualities of certain characters as they lie and are deceitful. There is also the use of the motif of fruit which represents the forbidden. Lastly, the forbidden is shown using women. These are also shown in other pieces of literature, such as Paradise Lost, written by John Milton, however both writers portray the theme of forbidden in different ways. The Duchess seems to be chasing after the forbiddance within things and to explore them. However, this is what causes the death of others as she is wanted to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Over the years family appropriate content, style and marketing has allowed for non–Disney produced films to achieve success, but will they ever be as profitable as the Disney films? The Disney model has created a culture of mega–entertainment and expectations, so that more family entertainment from non–Disney companies makes for a greater variety of films, but not a guarantee of the synergy and ancillary markets to support the films. The giant company that started as Disney, all began with Walt Disney arriving in California in 1923. Earlier in Kansas City, he had made a cartoon called "Alice's Wonderland" which would soon be the pilot for his series called "Alice's Comedies". Disney was contracted by a distributor, M. J. Winkler, on October 16, 1923, which was the official start of one the largest entertainment companies to ever exist, Walt Disney Company. Disney went on to produce many short and full length films suited for family entertainment. Their early full length animation movies in the 1950's that captured family viewing were Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In his late twenties, Walter joined forces with some of the most powerful Norman figures in England, engaging a series of battles in which the throne of England was at stake. On one side was the claimant Stephen of Blois, and opposing him Matilda (called "Maud"), the daughter of recently deceased King Henry I. In these contests, Walter FitzAlan linked up with Scotland's King David and also with one of King Henry's sons named Reginald Dunstanville, a half–brother of Maud [10]. David granted Walter the lands of "Kerkert" and "Strathgryffe" (much of the land of Renfrewshire) and it was here, in Paisley, that Walter established his home. Blackhall served as an ancestral home for subsequent generations of his family who served as hereditary stewards of Scotland. In the centuries to follow these hereditary stewards ascended to the Scottish throne as kings, adopting the surname Stewart for themselves and ultimately forming the Stuart dynasty that ruled Scotland, Ireland, and England during the 17th century [13]. Thus Blackhall Manor can be thought a cradle of kings, as the Stuart dynasty of Scotland and England find their beginnings in Walter FitzAlan at Blackhall. Also at Paisley, Walter endowed a Cluniac monastery in Paisley in Renfrewshire, importing monks from Shropshire, which monastery grew into Paisley Abbey in Walter's lifetime. • 20. John Stuart Mill's Philosophy of Happiness Essay John Stuart Mill's Philosophy of Happiness Along with other noted philosophers, John Stuart Mill developed the nineteenth century philosophy known as Utilitarianism – the contention that man should judge everything in life based upon its ability to promote the greatest individual happiness. While Bentham, in particular, is acknowledged as the philosophy's founder, it was Mill who justified the axiom through reason. He maintained that because human beings are endowed with the ability for conscious thought, they are not merely satisfied with physical pleasures; humans strive to achieve pleasures of the mind as well. In Utilitarianism, Mill noted, "utility includes not solely the pursuit of happiness, but the prevention or mitigation of unhappiness" (Mill 12). The pursuit of pleasure has also been condemned by critics as being little more than the promotion of one's own interests, with no regard to the happiness of others. Mill disputes this as being narrow– minded, clarifying that the pleasure principle which forms the foundation for utilitarianism, "what is right in conduct, is not the agent's own happiness, but that of all concerned" (Mill 16). With this acknowledgment, however, comes the criticism that people cannot possibly be motivated by something as satisfying the collective good of society. Mill countered this by pointing out, "The utilitarian morality does recognize in human beings the power of sacrificing their own greatest good for the good of others" (Mill 16). To the objection that pleasure is an acceptable end is contrary to Christian principles because it is "godless," Mill states, "If it be a true belief that God desires, above all things, the happiness of his creatures, and that this was his purpose in their creation, utility is not only not a godless doctrine, but more profoundly religious than any other" (Mill 21). Mill's pleasure principle was disputed by both philosophers and theologians because of its apparent lack of association to a code of morality. To this, Mill contended that there can ... In the Victorian era women were to get married to a man of the same or a better social status, be good wives, and be a mother to her husband's children. Very few marriages started with love, but a woman's life is not complete without being married. Over time, the role of married women has evolved a great deal and they now have rights and privileges. Were woman to 'unsex' themselves by claiming equality with men, they would become the most hateful, heathen and disgusting of beings and would surely perish without male protection (Moore). There are many different reasons why women got married in the Victorian era. First and foremost was due to the lack of education. Women were usually uneducated or were taught only basic responsibilities. If a woman had too much education, Victorians thought that it would weaken their womb and deform their bodies (Moore). From early childhood, girls were taught that they should get married and have children when they get older (Hamilton). The little education that women got was received mostly at home. There were some boarding schools, but there was no university for women to attend. The studies that a girl would learn were French, drawing, dancing, music, and how to use globes. If the boarding school was interested in teaching any practical skills, girls would learn plain sewing as well as embroidery, and accounts. • 28. Analysis Of The Film Cool Hand Luke Cool Hand Luke Film Analysis The film, Cool Hand Luke, directed by Stuart Rosenberg and produced by Gordon Carroll, was released in November 1967. It is an American prison drama film about a former soldier who is sent to jail for taking the heads off of parking meters. Luke, the protagonist, is sentenced to two years in a chain gang prison ran by severe guardians. If the prisoners violate the rules it results in spending the night in the "box", which is a small room with limited air and limited space to move. Most of them follow every rule, while Luke is alienated at the prison. He does not take the regulations seriously, which always gets him into trouble. This film presents several examples of religious symbolism and themes which will be analyzed through the character of Luke, which is often applied in the film to add depth to his character. In Cool Hand Luke, there are some scenes in which the theme of crucifixion is depicted. One of the scenes is when Luke ingests fifty eggs, which "represents the souls of the earth Christ died for on the cross" (Christ Imagery in Cool Hand Luke). This happen when all the prisoners gather around him while Dragline served him the eggs. Luke accepted the challenge to prove himself to the inmates and to get the money from all the bets made on him. Whenever he finishes eating, he lies on the table with his arms extended. • 30. Once More Of The Lake "Once More to the Lake" is a short essay written by E.B. White for his column in the New Yorker, One Man's Meat. "Once More to the Lake" is a story about a father who is taking his son to his childhood vacation spot. On the trip, the father finds himself inside the memories of his past. Throughout the trip, the father finds differences in the lake from when he was a child. While much of E.B. White 's essay is set in the present, the author explores his own mortality as he looks both to the past and to the future. Elwyn Brooks White was born on July 11, 1899, in Mount Vernon, New York, and died in 1985. Throughout his lifetime, White had traveled to many places and held several jobs ranging from reporter to army private. He became a multifaceted writer but primarily wrote style manual, fiction, poetry, and children's literature. Throughout his life, White was surrounded by many other talented writers including Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, and Stephen Leacock. White wrote the well–known children's stories Stuart Little and Charlotte's Web. Many of White's works were accomplished with the help of his wife, former editor, Katharine Angell. "Once More to the Lake" was published in 1941 along with many other works on which he and Katharine had collaborated. The year 1941 was the onset of World War II in America. Other countries had been at war for some time. In 1941, however, the war became increasingly eminent for Americans. E.B. White did not slow down his writing during ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparing John Stuart Mill's The Subjection of Women and Florence Nightingale's Cassandra For thousands of years, women have struggled under the domination of men. In a great many societies around the world, men hold the power and women have to fight for their roles as equals in these patriarchal societies. Florence Nightingale wrote about such a society in her piece, Cassandra, and John Stuart Mill wrote further on the subject in his essay The Subjection of Women. These two pieces explore the same basic idea, but there are differences as well. While they both recognize its presence, Mill blames the subjection of women on custom, and Nightingale blames it on society. These appear to be different arguments, but they may be more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He feels that because women have been in this position for so many years, it would feel irregular to deviate from it. "The subjection of women to men being a universal custom, any departure from it quite naturally appears unnatural" (Mill 1157). As he continues, he reveals his thoughts on the matter to the reader: "this relic of the past is discordant with the future, and must necessarily disappear" (Mill 1159). Mill explores many aspects of the issue. He attempts to uncover the differences between the sexes to provide maybe another solution to the problem, but to no avail, "nothing final can be known" (Mill 1162); nothing is as strongly stated as when he places the blame on custom. Later in his essay, while exploring the systems of past societies, he comes to the same conclusion as earlier. Only this time, he states that there has been some improvement in the system as time went by; however, equality has not yet been reached. He believes that the small increase in power over time is enough to suggest that equality is the solution: "Through all...human history, the condition of women has been approaching nearer to equality with men. This does not itself prove that the assimilation must go on to complete equality; but it assuredly affords some presumption that such is the case" (Mill 1160). In other words, the greatest happiness principle says to choose the decision or action that in return creates the greatest amount of happiness for all that that are involved. He says that every other principle we follow are principles that we take into our lives based on the fact that they will hopefully help us to better or quantify our happiness. Abortion satisfies John Stuart Mill's description of Utilitarianism. Women get abortions for a variety of different reasons. Different reasons for getting an abortion range from health concerns and rape, to simply not being ready to take on the responsibility of having, providing, and taking care of another life. Whatever the reason may be, abortion is not wrong. According to Utilitarianism, one should do what will make them and everyone around them the happiest. Now, one could argue that having an abortion may make the other people around the women unhappy. The simple reply to this is that a women's decision to have an abortion has nothing to do with other people. • 48. Similarities Between Mill And Nietzsche Introduction In today's paper, I will be discussing Mill and Nietzsche. These two have differing opinions on what the biggest threat to society are: Mill argues that Freedom of Speech is essential to finding the truth (Mill, 2006, p. P12)– so even controversial opinions should be listened to. He fears that the tyranny of the majority could mean the Truth could be lost because alternative opinions are not listened to. The other threat to society to Mill is that women have fewer rights then men – such as voting – he believes women should be allowed to have the same opportunities (John Stuart Mill; Alan Ryan, 2006). In contrast, Nietzsche believes the biggest threat to society is the assumption that morality is natural. Morality is dangerous because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nietzsche's argument about morality is, largely, about rejecting Christianity (Frederick Nietzsche; Douglas Smith, 2008, p. P203). His statements about morality can be argued is a tool to critique organised religion in general. In contrast, Mill's goal is to make society stronger through learning the Truth (Mill, 2006, p. P12) and allowing equality (John Stuart Mill; Alan Ryan, 2006). The two's goals are different hence their conclusions are quite different. Mill's opinion on biggest threat to society Firstly, like I stated in the introduction, Mill believes that the biggest threat to society is that Freedom of Speech being stifled and women not having the same rights and opportunities as men. This is a threat to society for several reasons. Mill pointed out that "the opinion which it is attempted to suppress by authority may possibly be true" (Frederick Nietzsche; Douglas Smith, 2008, p. P386) which indicates that an unpopular opinion could be true – ignoring this opinion would mean the public would be pursuing something which is incorrect – this would clearly damage society. Mill also stated that "though the silenced opinion be an error, it may, and very commonly does, contain a portion of truth; and since the general or prevailing opinion on any subject is rarely or never the whole truth, it is ... Critics declare that it does not provide adequate protection for individual rights, as well that not everything can be measured by the same standard, and that happiness is more complex than reflected by the theory. Immanuel Kant is one of those who criticizes the Utilitarianism and argues how the Consequentialist view, by contrast, disputes that moral value lies not in our actions but in the consequences. It is also to be known that the utilitarianism of John Stuart Mill is one of the most influential forms of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 54. Rhetorical Analysis Of Once More To The Lake In the text "Once More to the Lake" author E.B. White focuses on appealing to fathers or even possibly parents in general. The text is eloquently written to ultimately reiterate that change is constant and at some point in life all people will eventually die. His primary goal of this text is to enjoy the moments in one's life before life is over. A nostalgic tone is used throughout when comparing his childhood memories to the current memories he is making with his own son. White is effective in illustrating his purpose by using techniques such as logos, ethos, pathos, and imagery to encourage his audience to be aware that their own lives are inevitably growing older each day. He refers multiple times to fishing terms that the general audience may not be knowledgeable of such as "spinner" ("Once" para. 1), "hellgrammite" ("Once" para. 5), and "bass" ("Once" para. 5). These terms not only classify White as a fisherman but also suggest the importance or impact that fishing and the lake have on his life. By using logos in his writing, he gains credibility with his intended audience. Although ethos and logos are important modes as well, this text is most effective due to White's continuous use of pathos. His thesis statement suggests the urge to return to his childhood memories, "...this feeling got so strong I bought myself a couple of bass hooks and a spinner and returned to the lake where we used to go, for a week's fishing and to re–visit old haunts" ("Once" para. 1).The audience is also evoked with anticipation to what will happen later. A good example of this is "I took along my son, who had never had any fresh water up his nose and who had seen lily pads only from train windows" ("Once" para. 2). The audience is left asking how the trip with his son will compare to his own memories. White goes on to describe in intricate detail his memory of the lake, cabins, and scenery. He uses visual imagery to allow the audience to place themselves in the setting he has described. "White wants to emphasize the permanence of some things, or at least the memory of some things, despite the continual change that happens in the world" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Delaney, Thoreau's subtle humor and individualistic philosophy has influenced White and it can be seen through his writing, including his short fiction. Delaney also said that White never lost his sense of humor even when dealing with depressing subjects. Most characteristic of White's short stories is their strange mixture of humor and emotional distress. In this way he resembles his friend James Thurber. Thurber was a major influence on White, just as White was on him. Delaney also went on to say that they were both admirers of Henry James, and that older writer's high literary standards and dedication to his craft are obviously reflected in White's short stories. White has also been praised for his use of prose style. This makes his writing flow easily and seem almost effortless. • 62. John Stuart Mill 's On Liberty And Utilitarianism Essay This essay examines and inspects liberty and order conflict based on the writings of philosopher John Stuart Mill, titled On Liberty and Utilitarianism. We will discuss how his philosophical views on equality as fundamental to what it means to be human. We will interpret John Stuart Mill's theorist view on equality as fundamental to the good or bad functioning of the state? The question and debate we would also raise will be, is equality be integral the arrangements of power? Lastly, we would argue the theorist's approach to liberty fundamentally influenced the way we view equality in the 21st century. In John Stuart Mill works of On Liberty, the piece focuses and concerns common and social freedom or, to take a gander at it from the opposite perspective, the nature and points of confinement of the power that can honest to goodness be practiced by society over the person. In John Stuart Mill works of Utilitarianism, it offers a possibility for a first standard of ethical quality, a rule that gives us a model recognizing good and bad. The utilitarian applicant is the guideline of utility. We will convey works from both pieces and examine his theoretical/ philosophical values of equality. Despite the fact that all may have concurred that an activity 's results for the general satisfaction and happiness were to direct its rightness or misleading quality, the explanations for the acknowledgment of that guideline and the utilizations to which the rule was put changed ... • 64. Marx, Mill And Freud 's Critique Of Political Economy And... Describe and assess the explicit (and sometimes merely implicit) notions of freedom and unfreedom we find in the texts we have read by Marx, Mill and Freud. Use the esoteric traditions we have examined thus far (from the Book of Job to Plato) as a comparative yardstick, or point of reference, but without letting them take over the foreground in your paper –– the latter should be reserved for these three figures. Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, and John Stuart Mill are three authors who tackle the topic of freedom in unique ways, but their messages are fundamentally the same and continue the ideas that we encountered in the esoteric texts as well as in The Matrix: . First, we have Karl Marx's Capital: Critique of Political Economy and The Communist Manifesto, where we encounter the proletariat, or the working–class people regarded collectively. In these two texts, the latter of which was co–authored by Frederick Engels, we learn that the proletariat is enslaved just like the people in the matrix. And just like the people in the matrix, the proletariat is oblivious to this limit on its freedom. That is why in Karl Marx's view, unfreedom is what we are living in now. According to him, many people think that abolishing private property through communism is what will infringe on our freedom, but that is not the case. Specifically, in The Communist Manifesto Marx states, "You are horrified at our intending to do away with private property. But in your existing society, private ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. John Stuart Mills Romanticism And Radicalism John Stuart Mill was born in 1806 and was the eldest son of James Mill and Harriet Barrow. James Mill taught John Greek at the age of three and Latin at age eight. By the age of 14, John had read many Greek and Latin classics. He had studied world history, logic and mathematics and had mastered the basics of economic theory, all of which was part of his father's plan to make John Stuart Mill a young advocate of the views of the philosophical radicals. By his late teens, Mill spent many hours editing Jeremy Bentham's manuscripts, and he threw himself into the work of the philosophic radicals. John also founded a number of intellectual societies and began to contribute to periodicals, including the Westminster Review, founded by Bentham and James Mill. In 1823, his father secured him a junior position in the East India Company, and he, like his father before him, rose in the ranks, eventually taking his father's position of chief examiner. In his twenties, John Stuart Mill felt the influence of Historicism and Romanticism. This led him to begin searching for a new philosophic radicalism that would be more sensitive to the limits on reform imposed by culture and history and would emphasize the cultivation of our humanity, including the disposition of feeling and imagination. John Stuart Mill influenced the shape of nineteenth century greatly through British thought and political discourse. James Mill, John Stuart Mill's father, and Jeremy Bentham led the "Philosophic ... If people around the world would adopt the philosophy of John Stuart Mill, the world might become a more intelligent, and therefore tolerant, place in which to live. John Stuart Mill espoused beliefs on the subjection of women and theism, which, if embraced by the majority of people in the world, would put a stop to much of the oppression the world, now endures. Mill was a philosopher who took the unusual stance that women should be considered equal to men in all respects and given the same opportunities as men. He had very strong feelings on the subject, and in his essay entitled "The Subjection of Women" he states, ... the principle which regulates the existing social relations between the two sexes––the legal subordination of one sex to the other–4s wrong in itself, and now one of the chief hindrances to human improvement; and that it ought to be replaced by a principle of perfect equality, admitting no power or privilege on the one side, nor disability on the other.1 [1] In this essay Mill admits the difficulty of achieving this, but defends his ideas by showing that the position of authority held by men is not a result of the comparison of several kinds of systems being tried and its having been found to be the best system, but that it is the only system that has ever been tried. As a result, one cannot not use past experience to say that women are incapable of being in positions of authority. In this essay Mill states, In the first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Mill On Liberty John Stuart Mill writes "On Liberty" as an attempt to not only define liberty, but also define the freedom an individual holds. Mill's definition of liberty can be summarized as an individual free to do as they please as long as they are not harming another individual or infringing on another individual's freedom. In the mind of John Stuart Mill "over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign." (Mill, 13) However, through the progression of the essay, it can be seen that Mill's outline of individual liberty does not produce a healthy public life. This conclusion is apparent in the vagueness of what constitutes as harm, the fact that liberty applies only to certain groups, and the blurred line of the State's control on the life of an individual. From the beginning of the essay, Mill claims that an individual has freedom of opinion and action. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
