Alice Walker The Color Purple Essay
Imagine having a hard life full of secrets and truth. This novel, written by Alice Walker, shows how a
young lady, Celie, goes threw thick and thin only to ponder who she really is. In the beginning she is
timid, submissive and passive. As the novel progresses, Celie transforms into a strong, independent,
and outspoken woman. The technique that she uses throughout this novel is the fearing of God. Alice
Walker takes her readers from low to high, with this powerful story, all narrated through letters to
God.

Afternoon of an American Boy
Afternoon of an American Boy
When I was in my teens, I lived in Mount Vernon, in the same block with J. Parnell Thomas, who
grew up to become chairman of the House Committee on Un American Activities. I lived on the
corner of Summit and East Sidney, at No. 101 Summit Avenue, and Parnell lived four or five doors
north of us on the same side of the avenue, in the house the Diefendorfs used to live in. Parnell was
not a playmate of mine, as he was a few years older, but I used to greet him as he walked by our house
on his way to and from the depot. He was a good looking young man, rather quiet and shy. Seeing
him, I would call Hello, Parnell! and he would smile and say Hello, Elwyn and walk on. Once I
remember dashing out of our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My sister had heard tales of tea dancing at the Plaza Hotel. She and a girl friend of hers and another
fellow and myself went there to give it a try. The expedition struck me as a slick piece of arrangement
on her part. I was the junior member of the group and had been roped in, I imagine, to give symmetry
to the occasion. Or perhaps Mother had forbidden my sister to go at all unless another member of the
family was along. Whether I was there for symmetry or for decency I can t really remember, but I was
there. The spectacle was a revelation to me. However repulsive the idea of dancing was, I was filled
with amazement at the setup. Here were tables where a fellow could sit so close to the dance floor that
he was practically on it. And you could order cinnamon toast and from the safety of your chair observe
girls and men in close embrace, swinging along, the music playing while you ate the toast, and the
dancers so near to you that they almost brushed the things off your table as they jogged by. I was
impressed. Dancing or no dancing, this was certainly high life, and I knew I was witnessing a scene
miles and miles ahead of anything that took place in Mount Vernon. I had never seen anything like it,
and a ferment must have begun working in me that afternoon. Incredible as it seems to me now, I
formed the idea of asking Parnell s sister Eileen to accompany me to a tea dance at the Plaza. The plan

Qualitative Critique
IntroductionThis study examined qualitative research on Pregnancy and protection: Perceptions,
attitudes and experiences of Australian female adolescents to determine designs and methods used and
to discover emergent themes across study. Most of the study reviewed was described as qualitative or
phenomenological by design and included samples comprising of Australian females participants
exclusively. Based on analysis of the collective primary findings of the sample research studys, three
themes were identified: (a) Perceptions, (b) attitudes and (c) experiences of Australian female
adolescents. Overall, the study revealed that most adolescent females perceive pregnancy as a rite of

One example of a qualitative research design might be a survey constructed as a precursor to the paper
towel experiment. A study completed before the experiment was performed would reveal which of the
multitude of brands were the most popular. The quantitative experiment could then be constructed
around only these brands, saving a lot of time, money and resources. Qualitative methods are probably
the oldest of all experimental techniques, with Ancient Greek philosophers qualitatively observing the
world around them and trying to come up with answers which explained what they saw. Some reviews
and metasyntheses of qualitative studies have been done [Barroso and Powell Cope 2000, Field and
Marck 1994, Jensen and Allen 1994 and Sleutel 1998], but established and systematic guidelines,
aside from critique and evaluation of methodology and quality of the components of the study, are
lacking [Sandelowski et al 1997]. [Sandelowski et al 1997] stated, In general, studies should not be
excluded for reasons of quality,...there are wide variations in conceptions of the good, and in quality
criteria (p. 368). Research studies were not excluded based on their scientific merit to avoid exclusion
of research studys germane to the purpose of this study. However, universal standards for qualitative

Sumarian Beliefs
History
In the southernmost region of ancient Mesopotamia laid the land of Sumer. Many believe that it is the
cradle of civilization. The name Sumer comes from the language of Northern Mesopotamia known as
Akkadian. It translates as the land of civilized kings . The Sumerians referred to themselves as the
black headed people and the thier home was simply the land . The biblical Book of Genius makes
mention of this area calling it Shinar. We know the land today to be southern Iraq.
Archeologists believe Sumer was settled somewhere between 4500 to 4000 BC. They developed thier
culture in the form of city states. Known city states are Ur, Kish, Eridu, Lagash, Nippur and Urak.
Urak is regarded as the first true city.

The music that has been found is difficult to convert to modern music. The staff notation that we use
today did not exist in ancient Sumer. They utilized a system of words or intervals followed by
numbers to identify pitch. We had no idea what interval matched what pitch. It was decided that we
would base the intervals off the tones made from replicas of ancient instruments. The Sumerian music
system is based around the lyre (a type of portable harp) that had nine strings just like contemporary
harps. Each string was tuned a step above or below the next string. The Sumerian scale had seven
notes in it just like a modern scale. The Sumerians gave their scales names just as we do today.
However, we do not know what the Sumerian scale names translate to. In other words, we do not
know the mode. Melodies today are made by assigning each note a specific pitch. Sumerian notation
gives each note a certain interval followed by a number. This is confusing. Does the number mean that
we play the interval a certain number of times? Do we play the same interval an octave apart at the
exact same time? No one knows for sure. Most scholars do not think that it means to play the intervals
simultaneously. That would make the music polyphonic. Polyphony in music was not truly seen until
1000 AD, 2000 years after Sumerian music was

deserve to die that night. It was not my time. I pray for the person who has done this to me. I wish he
could feel the pain that he put me through. (Barnum, 2003).
In 2001, Louis Guccione Jr. repeatedly stabbed his newly ex girlfriend, Dana Roppo, when she
requested a breakup. In her victim impact statement in the courtroom, she pleaded to the jury the first
sentences that Art Barnum, a Chicago Tribune reporter copied and put into a 2003 edition of the
newspaper and that I now began the presentation with. Relevance to audience: Many of us in this class
are around the age of nineteen, the same age that Dana Roppo was when she was attacked. She only
wanted a ride home when she was nearly killed. Like many other victims of Chicago crime, she was
not expecting it. Crime in one city affects crime in every city. The stories of the crimes in this city is
much like the story of the crime in our own city. Although the Greater Houston area is not considered
to be as dangerous place to live, we experience the same dangers as Chicago. Heed these warnings as
such. Dana Roppo was not expecting to be stabbed. Credibility material: Since the assignment of this

Duong Thu Huong s Paradise Of The Blind
An Analysis of Duong Thu Huong s Application of Audio in Paradise of the Blind During the
turbulent setting of post war Vietnam, Duong Thu Huong projects the chaos experienced by her
characters through auditory expression and musical elements. Primarily a bildungsroman, Paradise of
the Blind portrays the protagonist, Hang, guided by her hometown s chants and foreign influences.
Although the timeline of this novel is nonlinear, aspects like the cripple s chant consistently transform,
adapting to Hang s level of maturity and emotional progression. Huong demonstrates Hang s journey
physically and emotionally. Young Hang lives a life of silent confusion, with a void left by her absent
father. Huong therefore fills the void with cacophonies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

changing discernment of the cripple s song, which followed her from childhood to adulthood. This

The Art Of Madame De Pompadour
Madame de Pompadour, mistress, confidante and advisor to King Louis XV of France, and later, Lady
in Waiting to his Queen, rose from the middle classes to become a woman of influence in the French
court of 1746 1764. Pompadour embraced the grand lifestyle of the aristocracy including having her
portrait painted numerous times by many artists, utilizing her influence in how she was painted and
the messages those paintings portrayed (Jones). Her court painter, Francois Boucher represented her as
an idealized beauty (Jones) especially in his masterful oil painting of 1756, Portrait of Madame de
Pompadour, which showcased her opulent lifestyle, beauty, and intelligence (Davies 766) and status in
the French court. In this portrait, Boucher sets Pompadour in an intimate scene, typical of Rococo
style art, dressed in sumptuous silks, surrounded by books, flowers and elaborate draperies, at her
ease, gazing into the distance, caught in a moment of thought. Painted shortly after her appointment as
Lady in Waiting to the Queen, the painting is a celebration of Pompadour s status in the French Court
of King Louis XV.
The main subject of the painting is Madame de Pompadour, who sits half reclining, engulfed by yards
and yards of colorful fabrics, with gilded furnishings and flowers galore, a celebratory painting of a
femme savant (Goodman 1), at ease in her surroundings. Books and papers fill the scene, proclaiming
her intellectual prowess. An educated woman, Pompadour is

The Role Of Flappers In The 1920 s
The way everyone presents themselves in the 1920s by dressing as chosen and fashion styles, people
show this by each gender having their own style of clothes. One of the roles for a female is flappers
who are independent females. At night they dressed up to go out to nightclubs in dresses and high
heels and crazy fashion styles. Flappers also changed there hair style to be different and act out such
as Jordan Baker said You ve dyed your hair since then (Fitzgerald 43). Jordan had no idea who the girl
was because she changed her hair so much that she couldn t be recognized by the guests at Gatsby s
party.. This shows how a flapper style is over the top with not staying the same and changing styles a
lot. During the age of the flapper, females

Traits Of Raskolnikov
Raskolnikov is depicted as crushed by poverty, but the anxieties of his position had of late ceased to
weigh upon him (Dostoyevsky 3). During 1861, the Emancipation Reform had recently taken place.
After the defeat of Russia in the Crimean War, Russian officials declared to give rights to the serfs.
The serfs were treated poorly leading to protests and eventually leading to the Reform. The
Emancipation Reform put Russia backward socially and economically. The serfdom illustrated Russia
s weaknesses and Raskolnikov was a representation of an individual struggling with Russia s
difficulties. The economy was suffering and the need for money became crucial for regular basic
needs to survive. Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the author of the novel, considers ... Show more content on

History Of Curling
Originating in Scotland, curling in one of the oldest team sports recorded to date. Created in the 16th
century, the earliest known curling stones were found in Perth and Sterling, Scotland. These curling
stones are dated back as far as 1511. As the game developed, stones with handles were designed and
used to help improve accuracy. The first known use of this development dates back to the early 1600 s.
Back then the sport of curling was played during the winter months on frozen ponds and lochs by two
teams ( Olympic Curling , 2018). As curling grew in popularity, curling clubs began to appear in
Scotland. The Grand Caledonian Curling Club was the first to develop official rules for the sport in

Literary Explication Of Shakespeare s Sonnet 130
Literary Explication When thinking of a love poem, one thinks of a cliché description of the speaker s
lover or maybe is an imaginative portrayal of love in a general sense. Love poems always have an
exaggerating characteristic when describing something or someone. Sonnet 130 by William
Shakespeare, is a parody of love poetry; love is not always like it is illustrated in others
contemporaries poems. The author of this sonnet uses the traditional English sonnet form, containing
fourteen lines, written in iambic pentameter, and has an ABABCDCDEFEFGG rhyme scheme. The
sonnet s form is part of the parody because usually love sonnets writers use traditional sonnet forms,
an example for this is Francesco Petrarch that is well known for his love sonnets written in Italian
sonnet form. Shakespeare makes the contradiction between a traditional sonnet form and a non
traditional content of the sonnet. The content of this sonnet, a decretory description of the speaker s
lover, is very opposite to a traditional love poem s content. In the first three quatrains of Sonnet 130 ,
the speaker compares his mistress with various thing and tells us how she doesn t measures up to
them. In the last couplet the speaker changes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Love poets seem to obsess with woman s appearances, but Shakespeare mange to poke on that
obsession, making this poem kind of a wakeup call on our image of beauty. As the speaker lightly
mocks traditional poems and beauty images, he turns the theme to an illustration of true love, ending
the poem on a sweet note. By turning the theme he goes from the person who he is mocking other
poets to the poet he has mocked all along. This couplet also sends the message that even in a poem
where he is mocking other poets he need to express his true feeling about his

The Causes And Consequences Of Low Birth Weight
The Causes and Consequences of Low Birth Weight
Low Birth rate is defined by the World health Organization as a baby weighing under 2,499 grams or
less regardless of gestational age. (WHO) This is a Prominent issue in our world today because on
average 30 million low birth weight babies are born every year. There are many factors that can causes
low birth weight such as premature birth, substances that affect the mother s health, father s support,
stress, the mothers age and race, and insufficient prenatal care. Low birth weight is important to
prevent and treat because it can lead multiple life threatening consequences, some of which can
remain with the child for life.
Pre mature birth is the number one cause of low birth weight in the United States. A baby is
considered pre mature if they are delivered before the thirty seventh week of pregnancy. This occurs
when the mother goes into labor to early. This can become very dangerous for the baby because it had
less time to develop in the womb leading to developmental issues. Symptoms of premature birth
include a large head in comparison to the body size, respiratory distress, trouble maintaining body
heat, eye damage. There are three types of pre term are Extremely preterm a child born less than 28
weeks, very preterm born between 28 to 32 weeks, and moderate to late preterm born between 32 to
37 weeks.

Glycogen In Muscle And Liver Tissue Lab Report
Post Mortem Presence of Glycogen in Muscle and Liver Tissue
Background
There are four main classes of macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. For
this experiment the main focus will go to the carbohydrates, more specifically the polysaccharides.
Polysaccharides consist of three or more sugar molecules linked together ( macromolecules ) or one
sugar derivative are called homopolysaccharides.( polysaccharides 1) Homopolysaccharides are
glucose that includes glycogen and starch, which is the storage of carbohydrates in animals and plants.
( polysaccharides 2) During the second lab of this course, one of the technique to determine if
something had polysaccharides in it was using the Iodine test. Starch and glycogen units have a unique

Clinicians usually become aware of a person s kleptomania only when the individual is in treatment
for some other psychological problem such as an anxiety disorder, psychoactive substance abuse,
eating disorder, or mood disorder (Bradford Balmaceda, 1983; McElroy et al., 1991). The fact that
most kleptomaniacs seen in a clinical context also suffer from another psychological disorder raises
some interesting questions. Is it possible that kleptomanic behavior is a symptom of some other
disorder, possibly biologically caused? With this possibility in mind, some researchers have speculated
that a serotonin deficiency might underlie kleptomania, an idea that is supported by the fact that the
medication fluoxetine (Prozac), which increases serotonin in the nervous system, has been found to
reduce kleptomanic behavior (McElroy et al., 1991). In addition to pharmacological interventions,
behavioral treatments are also used to help individuals control their urge to steal. In covert
sensitization, the client is insstructed to conjure up aversive images during the act of stealing (Glover,
1985). For example, a kleptomaniac may be instructed to conjure up disgusting images, such as vomit,
when the compulsion to steal is emerging.

1. What is A? Why is it there? Why should we care? Lake Baikal, head water to the Lena River and is
a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lake Baikal is said to be the Galapagos of Russia and was formed by
a rift zone that is no longer active. It is 1700 meters deep and has 20% of the worlds unfrozen
freshwater. The lake is a big resource for the planet and it has very unique plants and animals due to
its isolation. Also due to the isolation, it has a high rate of endemic species. Lake Baikal was also the
site of the first democratic movement in the Soviet Union. The Perestroika movement freedom of

In general terms, discuss the ways in which the change from a centrally planned economy to a more
market based economy has affected career options and standards of living for the elderly, young
professionals, unskilled laborers, members of the military, women, and former government
bureaucrats. The collapse of the Soviet Union started the change to a market driven economy.
Everyone had to learn what capitalism was and had to do so very quickly, which was not an easy
process. Changing to a market driven economy was great for those who had an advantage, such as the
previous leaders in the Soviet Union. They were able to take over state run businesses as their own
and become wealthy. Others, like young professionals, unskilled laborers etc....lost their jobs and
unemployment skyrocketed. With the unemployment so high, the standard of living for these workers
worsened.
3. Discuss the declining birthrate in Russia and other countries in the region. What do you think the
impact of this decline can have on neighboring countries and regions? Are similar declines happening
elsewhere? The declining birthrate is seen all throughout Russia and neighboring countries. A lot is
due to many choosing to have less children and also the high mortality rate of younger men. It seems
that Europe and the United States are also seeing a decline in the birthrate, but not as bad as

Plastic And Its Effects On The Marine Ecosystem
Plastic has become a staple, and the use of plastic products is abundant in everyday life even if it is not
apparent. The production and use of plastics has increased dramatically over the last sixty years, and a
vast majority of plastic being produced is not recovered after it is used. It is clear that much of what
we have today would not be possible without plastics, but the fact that it is not biodegradable and
toxic creates a product that just takes up a vast amount of space and poisons animals. The overflow of
plastic eventually makes its way into the ocean and is affecting marine life at an alarming rate. Plastic
debris pollutes oceans all over the world as it breaks down into smaller pieces and are ingested by a
large range of species. Animals exposed eat the plastic products and it causes health problems
throughout the marine ecosystem. Some humans rely on these animals for food without knowing that
they have been exposed to toxic products. The smallest organisms or exposure to chemicals can wreak

America s National Language Should Be English
America is predominantly known for its music, food, diversity and its ongoing various languages.
Nearly eighty percent of America speaks English (Kasperowicz). The other twenty percent of the
population who do not speak English are mostly made up of immigrants. Because the United States
has an incredibly large amount of diverse languages, it unfortunately does not have a national
language. America s national language should be English. When immigrants and travelers come into
this country, they are aware that they will see and hear the English language, as it is unavoidable. In
my experience, I have concluded that it would be much simpler to have an official, nationally common
language that will be more recognized and simpler to accept. It isn t always accepted because of the
never ending debates about its value in our multicultural society. The debates in our society often
argue that we have at least 322 different languages, and they aren t always easily translatable by the
government. (US English).
The value that the English language has had on this country is significant in infinite ways. This
particular language defines our country as a whole. It unifies the people. America s fifty unique states
have a common value with this common language, and therefore, it will lastingly tie us all together.
Language could be described as to represent the national identity of a nation or country and that it is
enhanced as a language in common or community language (Brann).

Pre k provides many children their first opportunity for learning and provides many others with
enrichment activities that enhance the opportunities they have already been provided. This learning
environment should be structured so that children who are impoverished can explore and those more
advanced can excel. This includes academics, socialization, and motor and communication skills.
Research indicates programs such as preschool and Head Start will accentuate these skills in all

Elementary grades are equally important. Academics are important with each progressing grade but so

The Veil By Jean Dubois
For DuBois, the veil refers to three things. First, the veil suggests to the darker skin of Blacks, which
is a physical difference from whiteness. Secondly, the veil suggests white people s lack of clarity to

outside of what white America describes and provides for them. Dubois believes that socially present

American Jacques Rousseau Women
ean Jacques Rousseau, an eighteenth century French philosopher, was the only Enlightenment thinker
that wrote two social contract theories. In each of Rousseau s narratives, he completely disregards
women. Throughout all of Rousseau s work, but Emile in particular, he emphasizes women as passive
agents in the world. In Pacha Mama, Rousseau, and the Femini, Nalinia Persram, a contemporary
philosopher, argues that women s superiority extends from the private sphere extends into the public
sphere. (236) Women are only superior as long as they maintain control of nature and nurture. (237)

In this work, he traces Emile from birth to adulthood in order to explain that education comes from
nature, experience, and others. In Book V, Rousseau uses Sophy to explain how to educate women,
who he believes do not have the same rational capacity as men. Rousseau states, The man should be
strong and active; the woman should be weak and passive. (2) Rousseau endorsed patriarchal societies
which deemed women incompetent, weak, and in need of protection. Men only depend on women
because they want women, whereas women need and want men. In Rousseau s understanding, women
are not created as equal to men. Instead, women serve as the resources of men; therefore, females are
taught only how to serve men. (2) In this social structure, women s statuses depended on men; women
were the property of their fathers and husbands. Rousseau confines women to traditional gender norms

Dividend policy is the regulations and guidelines that a company uses to decide to make dividend

Instances where Music Has Been Influenced by Politics
Music has always been tied to what has been happening to in the world around its creator. This is true
for classical music, as well as popular (pop) music. Pop music is music that is mass marketed and
shared primarily by recordings. The Emergence of pop music occurred because of the invention of
three recording devices, the phonograph cylinder (1878), the flat gramophone record (1887), and the
Player piano (1896). Musicians like James Reese Europe had to find ways to allow himself (and other
African Americans) able to perform, as well as get his music heard. Shostakovich had to work within
Stalin s Social Realism. Ravel s La Valse is a reaction the War in Europe. In many ways has music has
been influenced by the politics of the time these are the three composers I am going to focus on. James
Reese Europe lived from 1880 1919. He studied music theory and violin from the Assistant Director
of the United States Marine Corps Band. When he was 22 he moved to New York, where he was able
to get some work but not a whole lot. This was due to his African heritage. So, he responded by
creating the Clef Club. The Clef Club was a multipurpose organization; it served as social club, a
booking agency, and a trade union for African American musicians in New York City. Through this
club, he was able to stage concerts at Carnegie Hall with 125 piece orchestras. In 1913 the Castles,

According to Sarah Sparks, in her article Studies Find Cheaters Overinflate Academic Ability, not
only are students who cheat successfully more likely to cheat again, but as they cheat more frequently
they rationalize their cheating to ease their consciences. Sparks is concerned that students who cheat
begin to value grades only for the grades themselves, and not for the education they were supposed to
have claimed. The people who are most affected by these actions are, the student teacher relationship.
By the student cheating off of someone else and getting caught they set up a reputation of cheating
between themselves and the teacher that caught them doing so. The next thing that is affected by this,
is the others who don t cheat. Now you wouldn t think that this group is affected but they are one of
the most affected. This is because the student sets up a reputation for the whole class because of his or

Both circuit switching and packet switching are methods of data communication between two parties.
In circuit switching, both parties agree on a specific path which the data will travel along while the
connection is open using a resource optimization algorithm before the transmission begins. The route
is used exclusively for the entire session and only released when the session is terminated.
In packet switching, the path which the data takes is not predetermined but rather decided upon by the

to get to its destination. At each hop, the packet will re evaluate the shortest path to get to the

  • 3. Afternoon of an American Boy Afternoon of an American Boy When I was in my teens, I lived in Mount Vernon, in the same block with J. Parnell Thomas, who grew up to become chairman of the House Committee on Un American Activities. I lived on the corner of Summit and East Sidney, at No. 101 Summit Avenue, and Parnell lived four or five doors north of us on the same side of the avenue, in the house the Diefendorfs used to live in. Parnell was not a playmate of mine, as he was a few years older, but I used to greet him as he walked by our house on his way to and from the depot. He was a good looking young man, rather quiet and shy. Seeing him, I would call Hello, Parnell! and he would smile and say Hello, Elwyn and walk on. Once I remember dashing out of our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My sister had heard tales of tea dancing at the Plaza Hotel. She and a girl friend of hers and another fellow and myself went there to give it a try. The expedition struck me as a slick piece of arrangement on her part. I was the junior member of the group and had been roped in, I imagine, to give symmetry to the occasion. Or perhaps Mother had forbidden my sister to go at all unless another member of the family was along. Whether I was there for symmetry or for decency I can t really remember, but I was there. The spectacle was a revelation to me. However repulsive the idea of dancing was, I was filled with amazement at the setup. Here were tables where a fellow could sit so close to the dance floor that he was practically on it. And you could order cinnamon toast and from the safety of your chair observe girls and men in close embrace, swinging along, the music playing while you ate the toast, and the dancers so near to you that they almost brushed the things off your table as they jogged by. I was impressed. Dancing or no dancing, this was certainly high life, and I knew I was witnessing a scene miles and miles ahead of anything that took place in Mount Vernon. I had never seen anything like it, and a ferment must have begun working in me that afternoon. Incredible as it seems to me now, I formed the idea of asking Parnell s sister Eileen to accompany me to a tea dance at the Plaza. The plan shaped ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Qualitative Critique IntroductionThis study examined qualitative research on Pregnancy and protection: Perceptions, attitudes and experiences of Australian female adolescents to determine designs and methods used and to discover emergent themes across study. Most of the study reviewed was described as qualitative or phenomenological by design and included samples comprising of Australian females participants exclusively. Based on analysis of the collective primary findings of the sample research studys, three themes were identified: (a) Perceptions, (b) attitudes and (c) experiences of Australian female adolescents. Overall, the study revealed that most adolescent females perceive pregnancy as a rite of passage and a challenging yet positive life event. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example of a qualitative research design might be a survey constructed as a precursor to the paper towel experiment. A study completed before the experiment was performed would reveal which of the multitude of brands were the most popular. The quantitative experiment could then be constructed around only these brands, saving a lot of time, money and resources. Qualitative methods are probably the oldest of all experimental techniques, with Ancient Greek philosophers qualitatively observing the world around them and trying to come up with answers which explained what they saw. Some reviews and metasyntheses of qualitative studies have been done [Barroso and Powell Cope 2000, Field and Marck 1994, Jensen and Allen 1994 and Sleutel 1998], but established and systematic guidelines, aside from critique and evaluation of methodology and quality of the components of the study, are lacking [Sandelowski et al 1997]. [Sandelowski et al 1997] stated, In general, studies should not be excluded for reasons of quality,...there are wide variations in conceptions of the good, and in quality criteria (p. 368). Research studies were not excluded based on their scientific merit to avoid exclusion of research studys germane to the purpose of this study. The name Sumer comes from the language of Northern Mesopotamia known as Akkadian. It translates as the land of civilized kings . The Sumerians referred to themselves as the black headed people and the thier home was simply the land . The biblical Book of Genius makes mention of this area calling it Shinar. We know the land today to be southern Iraq. Archeologists believe Sumer was settled somewhere between 4500 to 4000 BC. They developed thier culture in the form of city states. The music that has been found is difficult to convert to modern music. The staff notation that we use today did not exist in ancient Sumer. They utilized a system of words or intervals followed by numbers to identify pitch. We had no idea what interval matched what pitch. It was decided that we would base the intervals off the tones made from replicas of ancient instruments. The Sumerian music system is based around the lyre (a type of portable harp) that had nine strings just like contemporary harps. Each string was tuned a step above or below the next string. The Sumerian scale had seven notes in it just like a modern scale. The Sumerians gave their scales names just as we do today. However, we do not know what the Sumerian scale names translate to. In other words, we do not know the mode. Melodies today are made by assigning each note a specific pitch. Sumerian notation gives each note a certain interval followed by a number. This is confusing. Does the number mean that we play the interval a certain number of times? Do we play the same interval an octave apart at the exact same time? No one knows for sure. Most scholars do not think that it means to play the intervals simultaneously. That would make the music polyphonic. Polyphony in music was not truly seen until 1000 AD, 2000 years after Sumerian music was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Informative Speech Of A Speech On Chicago Crime I. General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To inform my Public Speaking class about Chicago crime Attention Getter: I did not deserve to die that night. It was not my time. I pray for the person who has done this to me. I wish he could feel the pain that he put me through. (Barnum, 2003). In 2001, Louis Guccione Jr. repeatedly stabbed his newly ex girlfriend, Dana Roppo, when she requested a breakup. In her victim impact statement in the courtroom, she pleaded to the jury the first sentences that Art Barnum, a Chicago Tribune reporter copied and put into a 2003 edition of the newspaper and that I now began the presentation with. Relevance to audience: Many of us in this class are around the age of nineteen, the same age that Dana Roppo was when she was attacked. She only wanted a ride home when she was nearly killed. Like many other victims of Chicago crime, she was not expecting it. Crime in one city affects crime in every city. The stories of the crimes in this city is much like the story of the crime in our own city. Although the Greater Houston area is not considered to be as dangerous place to live, we experience the same dangers as Chicago. Heed these warnings as such. Dana Roppo was not expecting to be stabbed. Credibility material: Since the assignment of this project, our group has been reading articles from Chicago newspapers, blogs, news stations, and government agencies. Duong Thu Huong s Paradise Of The Blind An Analysis of Duong Thu Huong s Application of Audio in Paradise of the Blind During the turbulent setting of post war Vietnam, Duong Thu Huong projects the chaos experienced by her characters through auditory expression and musical elements. Primarily a bildungsroman, Paradise of the Blind portrays the protagonist, Hang, guided by her hometown s chants and foreign influences. Although the timeline of this novel is nonlinear, aspects like the cripple s chant consistently transform, adapting to Hang s level of maturity and emotional progression. Huong demonstrates Hang s journey physically and emotionally. Young Hang lives a life of silent confusion, with a void left by her absent father. Huong therefore fills the void with cacophonies, ... Maturity and growth are encompassed by Hang s changing discernment of the cripple s song, which followed her from childhood to adulthood. • 8. The Art Of Madame De Pompadour Madame de Pompadour, mistress, confidante and advisor to King Louis XV of France, and later, Lady in Waiting to his Queen, rose from the middle classes to become a woman of influence in the French court of 1746 1764. Pompadour embraced the grand lifestyle of the aristocracy including having her portrait painted numerous times by many artists, utilizing her influence in how she was painted and the messages those paintings portrayed (Jones). Her court painter, Francois Boucher represented her as an idealized beauty (Jones) especially in his masterful oil painting of 1756, Portrait of Madame de Pompadour, which showcased her opulent lifestyle, beauty, and intelligence (Davies 766) and status in the French court. In this portrait, Boucher sets Pompadour in an intimate scene, typical of Rococo style art, dressed in sumptuous silks, surrounded by books, flowers and elaborate draperies, at her ease, gazing into the distance, caught in a moment of thought. Painted shortly after her appointment as Lady in Waiting to the Queen, the painting is a celebration of Pompadour s status in the French Court of King Louis XV. The main subject of the painting is Madame de Pompadour, who sits half reclining, engulfed by yards and yards of colorful fabrics, with gilded furnishings and flowers galore, a celebratory painting of a femme savant (Goodman 1), at ease in her surroundings. The Role Of Flappers In The 1920 s The way everyone presents themselves in the 1920s by dressing as chosen and fashion styles, people show this by each gender having their own style of clothes. One of the roles for a female is flappers who are independent females. At night they dressed up to go out to nightclubs in dresses and high heels and crazy fashion styles. Flappers also changed there hair style to be different and act out such as Jordan Baker said You ve dyed your hair since then (Fitzgerald 43). During 1861, the Emancipation Reform had recently taken place. After the defeat of Russia in the Crimean War, Russian officials declared to give rights to the serfs. The serfs were treated poorly leading to protests and eventually leading to the Reform. The Emancipation Reform put Russia backward socially and economically. • 12. Literary Explication Of Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 Literary Explication When thinking of a love poem, one thinks of a cliché description of the speaker s lover or maybe is an imaginative portrayal of love in a general sense. Love poems always have an exaggerating characteristic when describing something or someone. Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare, is a parody of love poetry; love is not always like it is illustrated in others contemporaries poems. The author of this sonnet uses the traditional English sonnet form, containing fourteen lines, written in iambic pentameter, and has an ABABCDCDEFEFGG rhyme scheme. The sonnet s form is part of the parody because usually love sonnets writers use traditional sonnet forms, an example for this is Francesco Petrarch that is well known for his love sonnets written in Italian sonnet form. Shakespeare makes the contradiction between a traditional sonnet form and a non traditional content of the sonnet. The content of this sonnet, a decretory description of the speaker s lover, is very opposite to a traditional love poem s content. In the first three quatrains of Sonnet 130 , the speaker compares his mistress with various thing and tells us how she doesn t measures up to them. In the last couplet the speaker changes ... The fact that most kleptomaniacs seen in a clinical context also suffer from another psychological disorder raises some interesting questions. Is it possible that kleptomanic behavior is a symptom of some other disorder, possibly biologically caused? With this possibility in mind, some researchers have speculated that a serotonin deficiency might underlie kleptomania, an idea that is supported by the fact that the medication fluoxetine (Prozac), which increases serotonin in the nervous system, has been found to reduce kleptomanic behavior (McElroy et al., 1991). In addition to pharmacological interventions, behavioral treatments are also used to help individuals control their urge to steal. In covert sensitization, the client is insstructed to conjure up aversive images during the act of stealing (Glover, 1985). According to Sarah Sparks, in her article Studies Find Cheaters Overinflate Academic Ability, not only are students who cheat successfully more likely to cheat again, but as they cheat more frequently they rationalize their cheating to ease their consciences. Sparks is concerned that students who cheat begin to value grades only for the grades themselves, and not for the education they were supposed to have claimed. The people who are most affected by these actions are, the student teacher relationship. By the student cheating off of someone else and getting caught they set up a reputation of cheating between themselves and the teacher that caught them doing so. The next thing that is affected by this, is the others who don t cheat. Now you wouldn t think that this group is affected but they are one of the most affected. This is because the student sets up a reputation for the whole class because of his or her actions. Lastly and most obvious is the student that cheated. All they are doing is handicapping them selves because if you cheat you haven t actually learned anything from it therefore hurting your knowledge of the concept. The consequences of cheating can be hard for a tween or teen to understand. Without the ability to see the long term effects, children may feel that the pros of cheating (good grades) outweigh any negatives. (middleearthnj) I have experienced what these children feel when they think that the pros can outweigh the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gaining technical support for this particular solution can be troublesome and expensive, as the support officers must become completely familiar with the software before they can supply advice. 4.1 Both circuit switching and packet switching are methods of data communication between two parties. In circuit switching, both parties agree on a specific path which the data will travel along while the connection is open using a resource optimization algorithm before the transmission begins. The route is used exclusively for the entire session and only released when the session is terminated. In packet switching, the path which the data takes is not predetermined but rather decided upon by the packets during transit. It does this using the packet header which contains all the information it needs to get to its destination. At each hop, the packet will re evaluate the shortest path to get to the destination. Packet switching is the more appropriate technology to be used for the internet because of the dynamics of the internet itself. Computers connected the internet are ... Tristan PHIL 1106 002 Trial by Fire: Interpreting Evidence In late 1992, Cameron Todd Willingham was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death for a fire that claimed the lives of his three daughters the previous December. During the trial, the prosecution cited evidence from two arson investigators, Douglass Fogg and Manuel Vasquez, listing more than twenty indicators of arson, along with testimony from medical experts and other witnesses. The trial lasted only two days and resulted in a unanimous guilty verdict. However, now following Willingham s execution, it has come to light that much of the evidence used in his conviction in no way guarantees that arson had occurred. Finally, a sample taken from the home revealed the presence of mineral spirits, a substance that is often found in charcoal lighter fluid, near the front door. The remaining evidence came from witness testimony, such as an inmate in the same jail who alleged that Willingham had confessed to him, neighbors, firefighters, and police that were at the scene, and testimony from medical experts.
