Essay On Reading
Writing an essay on the topic of reading might seem deceptively simple at first glance, given the
familiarity most people have with the act itself. However, delving into the intricacies of crafting
a comprehensive and engaging essay on reading presents its own set of challenges.
To begin with, defining the scope of the essay becomes a critical task. Reading is a vast and
multifaceted subject, encompassing various forms such as literature, academic texts, online
content, and more. Narrowing down the focus to make the essay cohesive and meaningful
requires careful consideration.
Furthermore, striking a balance between personal insights and broader perspectives is crucial.
While sharing personal experiences with reading can add depth and authenticity to the essay, it's
essential to incorporate broader research, literary analysis, or historical context to provide a well-
rounded view.
The challenge deepens when attempting to capture the universal aspects of reading that resonate
with a diverse audience. Readers have different preferences, habits, and motivations, making it
challenging to create an essay that universally appeals to all.
Crafting a compelling introduction and conclusion is another hurdle. The introduction should
grab the reader's attention, conveying the significance of the topic, while the conclusion should
leave a lasting impression and perhaps inspire further contemplation on the subject.
The struggle to maintain a coherent and logical flow throughout the essay is a common hurdle.
Ensuring that each paragraph seamlessly transitions into the next, building a cohesive narrative,
is an art in itself.
In addition, the challenge lies in avoiding clichГ©s and generic statements that fail to add value.
Originality and uniqueness are vital, demanding a creative approach to the topic to stand out
from the myriad essays on reading that already exist.
In conclusion, writing an essay on reading, despite the apparent simplicity of the topic, requires
careful consideration, research, creativity, and a keen understanding of the diverse nature of
readership. The process involves navigating through the complexities of personal experiences,
universal truths, and literary analyses. Nevertheless, mastering this challenge can result in a piece
that not only informs but also inspires and captivates the reader.

1 Outline the main differences between experimental and critical approaches to social
psychology. 2 Describe the three main metaphysical battles between them. 3 Trace
the origins of social psychology through the work of William McDougall and
William James, and the contributions made by Völkerpsychologie and crowd
psychology.
4 Describe the two contrasting images of the person in social psychology. 5 Identify
the roots of and describe the historical development of both experimental and critical
social psychology.

In those days, she said, a lot of men s violence towards women was not really
treated as a crime. The police in the USA and the UK usually treated attacks like
this even very violent ones as domestic incidents and hence private matters. Worse,
common wisdom at that time assumed that any woman stupid or brazen enough to
be out on the streets at 3 o clock in the morning was to be regarded as fair game .
According to Cherry, this was not so much about bystander apathy in general but,
rather, a specific form of turning a blind eye to something that is none of your
business , a very different kind of explanation.
Going critical?
So why am I starting this book with this story, you may ask? My answer is that I
wanted get you interested, to draw you in, right from the start, to thinking critically
cynically, even about social psychology and what it does. The complex and
fascinating story of the story of the rape and murder of Kitty Genovese opens up all
sorts of cans of worms which is what this book is all about. Do not expect to п¬Ѓnd
in this book any simple, factual account of what makes people tick as discovered by
social psychologists. You will, I hope, get a good, basic grounding in the key

Ethical Decisions Of Tony Stark Made In Iron Man
Frist significant ethical decisions that Tony Stark made in Iron Man is to build the Iron
Man suit because he got captured by those murderers. They want him to build the
missile that he demonstrated and donated to the US soldiers. He tricks them by
agreeing to build the missile and ordered them to provide him the supply. However,
he was planning to build a suit that he designs. He wants to get out from the
captured or he will die if he doesn t agree to build the missile. Second significant
ethical decision that Tony made in the movie is to shut down the weapon
manufacturing because he think he did not help the country by building the
weapons. He saw American soldiers got killed by his weapon he created to defend
and protect them. He saw that he had become part of system that is not helpful at all
to the society. He thinks his company can build something that can help the country
instead of mass of weapon and distraction, he can build something to better improve
the society.
Third ethical decision that Tony made in Iron Manmovie is when he uses his suit
and flies to Gulmira town because he wants to save innocent people over there. He
wants to show the world that he did something virtues. He found out that his
opponent Obidiah was disloyal to the company. Obidiah sells his weapon under table
and Tony does not want that to happen in his company. He wants to save the world
from the act of evil.
Fourth significant ethical decision is when he tells his assistant Pepper to go to

Factors Affect The Chemical Rate Of A Chemical Reaction
Introduction:
Enzymes are a protein that replicates a catalyst which helps chemical reactions
begin to move without the enzymes being changed in the process. Enzymes work to
complete only one task. But there are a variety of different enzymes in the body that
each one has their specific task to complete. Something that enzymes do is they are
used in making foods, used for digestion. Many of the chemical reactions in the body
have a bunch of energy in them when they happen, which means it can occur in a
faster amount of time. Enzymes speed up a reaction by lowering the activation energy
. An inhibitor makes the reaction slow down. In this experiment we are testing how
three factors affect a chemical reaction. We will be representing different objects or
materials as the enzyme. We will use three objects or body part: a taped hand, a hand
with a tennis ball in it, and a rendered hand. The importance of this experiment is to
see how three different elements affect the chemical rate of a chemical reaction.
Materials and Method:
In this lab we needed supplies to help us conduct this experiment to make it
successful. The materials we used were 100 pennies, which represent the substrates.
We also needed a hand to help us represent the active site. The person in this
experiment was the enzyme. The tennis ball in their hand is represented by second
enzyme we were testing. We used tape to help us with the third enzyme trial. We
used a stopwatch to help us record how long we had to

My Most Embarrassing Moment Essay
It was in December, during my Christmas vacation, when I decided to start looking
for a summer job. There were many options but the job I decided to apply for was
a position as a lifeguard at a waterpark. I filled out an application and was accepted
almost immediately. The only thing left was the lifeguard training; little did I know
that it was going to be an experience I would never forget.
The aquatic rescue part of the training was held the week of my spring break. I was
excited about the training session because I was finally going to meet some of the
people that would work with me and get to see what the job was like. The day before
the session a meeting was held for all the people who had been accepted. Here I ...

This made my body less buoyant and my speed somewhat slow. There were two
sixteen year old girls in the lanes on either side of me who swam with the agility of
dolphins. These girls and everyone else beat me to the finish, which did not help my
nineteen year old ego. I wanted to crawl away and hide but was determined not to let
myself be outdone.
The next part of the training turned out to be the toughest. We were required to dive
ten feet to the bottom of the pool and retrieve a ten pound weight. Once the weight
was brought to the surface we were supposed to tread water for two minutes while
keeping the weight above the water line. This appeared to be simple so I dived in,
expecting an easy time. I had no trouble getting the weight to the surface and
proceeded to tread water with a feeling of undoubtable success. But once again my
anti floating physical quality began to take effect. At one minute and thirty
seconds I began to sink and within the next fifteen seconds my head was
submerged and I was fighting for air. The water from the pool began flowing into
my mouth with each desperate grasp for air; it felt as if an ocean were draining
into my body. I remember hearing from under the water the instructor s muffled
voice counting down the last ten seconds of the exercise. When it was all over I
slowly made my way back to the pool s edge where I was informed by the two young
girls that they had no difficulty

Khan Academy explains, The second law of motion states that force on an object is
equal to the mass of the object multiplied by its acceleration. If we apply this law to
a football, it tells us that the amount that the ball accelerates depends on the force
applied by the quarterback and the mass of the ball. ( Football Physics ). The less
mass a ball has the further it s potential to travel is. The lighter the ball is, the faster
and further the ball can move. Additionally, Khan Academy writes, The second law
also tells us that acceleration of the football also depends on the mass of the
football. If the player is throwing an extra heavy football, the acceleration of the
football would decrease compared to a lighter football that is thrown with the
same force. ( Football Physics ). This quote explains that the lighter a ball is, the
farther a ball can be thrown. Also, the farthest a ball can be thrown depends on the
amount of force the person throwing applies to the ball. ( Football Physics ). When
a ball is lighter due to less air pressure, the quarterback will be able to throw it further.
The less mass makes the ball lighter, and this will allow the wind to be able to carry
the ball

Though you should dedicate yourself to honing your skills and learning from your
coach, bear in mind that you re there to enjoy. Sure, the club might hold tournaments,
allowing you to compete with others. However, the goal is to have fun and hone
your skills not to become the best tennis player in the bunch. If you re the type of
person who wants to win the grand prize of every tourney, try to settle down and just
enjoy the entire experience.

Coming Of Age Quotes From A Separate Peace
In a place flooded with war and violence, a school is separated from reality; living
within the walls are the boys of the school, shielded from the ugly truths that lie
beyond. During this time of adolescence, the boys are forced to grow and mature
while the walls that protect them begin to fall. One boy, Gene, lives within this wall
and matures into a young man during this time through many events and conflicts he
faces. Through these events occurring, he is now able to withstand the violence of
the world, warand trauma. This coming of age is demonstrated when Gene causes
Finny to fall out of the tree, discovers the reality of war, and Finny dies. Gene s act
of purposely causing Finny to fall out of the tree forces him to feel guilty and move
on from his tendencies of jealousy and anger. After Finny s fall, Gene discovers that
Finny is so faithful as to not even accuse Gene of his actions. This causes Gene to
begin to feel extreme guilt, thence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Gene visits Leper at his home in Vermont, he discovers Leper s mental
instability and fears the same will happen to him in the future when he enlists in

worried about. For if Leper was psycho it was the army which had done it to him,
and I and all of us were on the brink of the army (Knowles 135). Gene is now
coming to the realization that war can have negative effects on those involved and
is beginning to fear the war. Previously, just as the other boys, he has been shielded
from the ugly truths of war by attending Devon, alien to the idea of the violence that
it contains. Now, he has achieved a new understanding and has now created an
informed opinion on war. This serves as a turning point for Gene because he is
losing his innocence and discovering more about the war beyond the walls of

Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts. His ancestors include John
Hathorne who was a judge at the Salem Witch Trials. Nathaniel Hawthorne added

background of the Puritan society was never hidden, especially within his narrative,
The Scarlet Letter. In the Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne tries to recreate a version of
history to provide a context for his narrative. He tells a story of a young woman who
committed sin and was punished. He writes about how the society treats her. I think
that Hawthorne did an accurate job of reshaping the Puritan society. With the overall
story of the Scarlet Letter, it provides a theme about the Puritan Society,... Show more

He is either to run away and leave behind his lies or confess to the colony about his
relationship with Hester. At the end of the book, we find out that Dimmesdale
chose to confess about the life he has hidden for seven years. He brings up Hester
and Pearl and tells society, People of New England! ... ye, that have loved me! ye,
that have deemed me holy! behold me here, the one sinner of the world! At last! at
last! I stand upon the spot where, seven years since, I should have stood, here, with
this woman, whose arm, more than the little strength wherewith I have crept
hitherward, sustains me at this dreadful moment, from groveling down upon my
face! Lo, the scarlet letter which Hester wears! Ye have all shuddered at it!
Wherever her walk hath been wherever, so miserably burdened, she may have
hoped to find repose it hath cast a lurid gleam of awe and horrible repugnance
round about her. But there stood one in the midst of you, at whose brand of sin
and infamy ye have not shuddered! (pg 174 175) This portrays the Puritan society
because before telling society his secret, Hester and Dimmesdale planned to run
away and create a new life together with Pearl as a family. This would lead to a life
full of sin. But Dimmesdale is a true Puritan. He wants to remain true to himself and
that means being honest with not only himself, but also being honest to society
because as a Puritan, they are all one. So
The Aging Population Of America
Introduction
The aging population in America is growing quickly and is projected to double by
the year 2050. The current growth in the number and proportion of older adults in
the United States is unprecedented in our nation s history. By 2050, it is anticipated
that Americans aged 65 or older will number nearly 89 million people (The State of
Aging and Health in America, 2013). Along with this increase in the aging
population, it is estimated that by the year 2020, 157 million Americans will have
some form of chronic illness (Taking Care: Ethical Caregiving in Our Society,
2005). With advances in medicine, people are able to live longer lives with chronic
illnesses that in the past resulted in a decreased life expectancy.
In addition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To compensate for this, many are looking towards helping older adults stay in their
home for as long as possible, even if they experience functional or cognitive
impairments. This idea is known as aging in place. In the USA, 95% of adults over
the age of 75 want to age in place. There are benefits and challenges to aging in
place. The benefits of aging in place are that it improves perceived quality of life and
is cost effective, whereas the challenges include declines in cognitive and functional
abilities of older adults, as well as time pressures on formal and informal caregivers
who must visit older adults in their homes throughout the community (Connelly,
Laghari, Mokhtari, Falk, 2014).
Fortunately, there are technologies that can assist with aging in place. These
technologies produce better health outcomes, lower caregiver burden, and save
money over the life of the individual. There are several types of technologies which
will be discussed in this paper, which include technologies that provide education and
support social networking, technologies that support monitoring and management of
health and well being, and chronic conditions, and finally technologies that support
interactions with the healthcare system (Marchibroda, 2015). This research paper
will show that the use of technology will greatly benefit the elderly population in
helping them to age in place.

Through the tunnel is a story about a young boy, Jerry who visits the beach with his
mother and soon he is determined to pass through an underwater tunnel and prove
himself capable of performing the task. Despite the fact that the other people around
him speak a foreign language, Jerry does not want to lose his pride.
As described, the story takes place on what is considered to be a safe beach (182) and
at the floor of the beach is a wild bay, (182) high up among red brown rocks (182).
The beach adds a warm feeling to the story but the bay complements a darker mood
and atmosphere, making the location dangerous. The current time period seems to
be more modern and portrays how people can easily travel from one place to
another without agonizing about other customs and languages, as Jerry is in a
foreign country. The story embarks as Jerry and his mother visit the beach, but
Jerry s mother feels that he his grown up enough to handle himself. She asks him,
Would you like to go somewhere else? (182). After hesitation Jerry replies, I d like
to have a look at those rocks down there (182). This shows that Jerry is growing

boys welcome Jerry to the beach, even though they can t communicate; Jerry his
happy to be with them and learns about the tunnel and how they were going through

What are these other serious illnesses that are caused by group A Streptococcus? What
is group A Streptococcus? Group A streptococci are bacteria commonly found in the
throat and on the skin. The vast majority of GAS infections are relatively mild
illnesses, such as strep throat and impetigo. Occasionally, however, these bacteria can
cause much more severe and even life threatening diseases such as necrotizing
fasciitis (occasionally described as the flesh eating bacteria ) and streptococcal toxic
shock syndrome (STSS). In addition, people may carry group A streptococci in the
throat or on the skin and have no symptoms of disease.
These bacteria are spread by direct contact with nose and throat discharges of an
infected individual or with infected skin lesions. The risk of spread is greatest when
an individual is ill, such as when people have strep throat or an infected wound.
Individuals who carry the bacteria but have no symptoms are much less contagious.

effects of age on the brains ability to retain and recall the same visual stimuli for
short time periods.
Introduction
Memories are the brains ability to retain information, whether that be long term or
short term. For a sensory input such as an image or a sound to be retained long
term, it has to go through 3 main stages or processes, where at each stage it can
either solidify its position in or towards the long term memory or be disregarded and
forgotten. These 3 main stages are; sensory memory, short term memory and long
term memory, and to progress between stages ... Show more content on

Millers Law states that the short term memory can hold on average 7 distinct
pieces of information at a time give or take 2. These 5 9 fragments of data can be
retained for up to a few minutes (3 5) but unless a conscious effort has been made to
remember the information it will only stay for approximately 30 seconds. Within the
prefrontal Cortex, the central executive has been found to play a significant role in
the short term memory. It serves as the temporary storage for information as well as
calling on information from the long term memory from other parts of the brain,
These older pieces of information can then get

Comparing the Speeches of Mark Antony and Brutus in Julius Caesar
The play Julius Caesar was first performed in 1599 at the Globe theatre in London.
The Globe theatre was built earlier that year and Julius Caesar was one of the first
plays performed there. This gives us reason to believe that the play was written
towards the end of 1598 and beginning of 1599.
William Shakespeare wrote the play Julius Caesar because Plutarchs Lives , William
Shakespeare s source of history, allowed him to use his imagination and create a
sell out play. In the history book of most of the facts are the same as William
Shakespeare s however he had to change some of the events in order to make it into

That if Rome were to be run by an ambitious man such as Julius Caesar then it would
be for the worst.
Mark Antony was not as fortunate with regards to family as Brutus, however he
was highly respected by Julius Caesar and Mark Antony treated him as a loyal,
close friend. Mark Antony was a logical thinker and it was this fact that made him
an excellent soldier along with him being skill full, and cunning in his approach to
life. He claimed to not have the skills of an orator, however this is ironic and he in
fact was one of the greatest orators of his time. He was driven by his emotions so
therefore he is going to whole heartedly persuade the crowd into his way of thinking,
to avenge the death of Julius Caesar and cause a riot against the conspirators.
Brutus task is to calm the crowd and to persuade them that he had a valid reason for
the joint murder of Julius Caesar, therefore he begins with the line

Appealing to their sense of patriotism with the word Romans and suggesting that he

Stapp And Kittinger Analysis
Brian,
Thanks for the nod in this piece. I feel compelled to adjust the impression people
might get reading it. Like you, Col. Stapp and Joe Kittinger were also two of my
childhood hero s. Col. Stapp bravely strapped himself into the seat of a rocket sled to
determine how much punishment a human could safely absorb during an ejection or
a sudden deceleration (crash). To this day, the results of Col. Stapp s experiments still
define the limits of human tolerance for the design of ejection systems and
crashworthy seats.
Rocket sleds are used to test anything that is designed for use in a high speed
aircraft. In this environment, Mr. Murphy rules and, given the opportunity,
anything can and will kill you. A pencil, a pen, a knee board or night vision
goggles in the wrong place when the pilot pulls the yellow handles, can be lethal.
Oregon Aero ejection seat cushion systems for high speed aircraft were no
exception and also had to ride the sled. Today, instrumented anthropomorphic
dummies rather than human beings collect the data. A Mach 1+ sled test is so fast
that it s not possible to watch all three phases of the test, acceleration, egress and
deceleration. One must pick one part of the event and focus or the whole thing is just
a blur. This was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The test seat and dummy are attached to a 2000 pound sled on rails then placed
against a powerful air cannon. To simulate a sudden stop and measure the
dummies spinal loads for injury, the sled is accelerated from zero velocity to 21
miles per hour in 50 milliseconds. That s a little less time than it takes to blink and
makes a big noise. Bang! For perspective, if the acceleration continued for one
second, the sled would exceed 422 miles per hour. For the drag race fans in the
audience, that s, 1,688 miles per hour in four seconds, Mach 2.19 or, more than
twice the speed of sound. I didn t, don t and have no intention of ever riding either a
rocket sled or a crash
Madame Defarge, Sydney Carton, And Charles Darnay
Charles Dickens uses the ambiguity of Madame Defarge, Sydney Carton, and
Charles Darnay to demonstrate how passion for something or someone can dictate
our actions and ultimately bring about a new persona in his novel A Tale of Two
Cities. At first glance, Madame Defarge has a seemingly passive personality. She
constantly knits and never speaks a word, but she is always watching. Dickens
characterizes her in a way so the reader knows there is something more to her, but
he keeps it a secret for the beginning of the novel. A glimpse to her second side is
seen when the intentions of her knitting is revealed: Knitted, in her own stitches and
her own symbols, it will always be as plain to her as the sun (Dickens 174). Her
knitting serves... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She will not stop at anything until she gets the revenge she seeks, even if it is
death. She is killed by Miss Pross in her attempt to get more evidence for her case
against Darnay s family. Her strong emotions are what bring about her dual side.
Dickens is commenting on the fact that humans do not just have positive and
negative qualities that cause them to be ambiguous. There is some other motive
and reason driving them to those opposing qualities. Sydney Carton is another
ambiguous character compelled by his passion. In the beginning of the novel he is
an isolated and depressed alcoholic. He is nicknamed memory because he acts as
the brain of his boss, Stryver. He has no confidence in himself: I am a disappointed
drudge, sir. I care for no man on earth, and no man on earth cares for me (Dickens
85). Carton never puts too much pressure on himself because he knows he is a
failure. He seems to be a guy who floats through life along with the current. When
he meets Lucie, he begins to change. He falls in love with her and even expresses
his feelings. He promises he will do anything for her: I would embrace any
sacrifice for you and those dear to you (Dickens 154). This is the complete opposite
of the reserved Carton from the start of the novel because now he finally has
someone he cares about. This brings up a new,
Comparison Of The Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers The Pittsburgh Steelers are a prime example of a Discourse
community. They have set goals and are not going to let anything get in the way
of those goals. As every NFL team has the goal of winning a Championship only 1
team achieves that goal each year. Some teams just aren t good in general and
some are great, but let little issues interfere with their team chemistry which makes
them lose. Then there are teams that come together on issues and work them out
so that they can be as successful as they can, but with this season there is a huge
issue that all teams are going to have to go through and that is the National
Anthem. The National Anthem is our country s theme song and it is very highly
respected throughout our great country. The Anthem talks about freedom, liberty,
and justice for all and about how there are great men and women who risk their
lives every day so our country can be free. So, when the Anthem is played at
professional football games everyone stands and holds their hand over their heart
and respects our flag and our Anthem because that is the least we can do to help
support and show our respects to our soldiers and our great country. As many
people can see, a lot of things are changing, and these changes started when Colin
Kaepernick (Former Quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, now a free agent)
decided to take a knee instead of standing during the National Anthem in the 2016
17 season. Colin says he did this not to disrespect the soldiers and war veterans but,
to bring awareness of the issues going on in our country. Colin said that he felt that
our country is not free and justice is not done fairly. He believes there is too much

Latin American Foreign Policy
At the end of the century, the total of the U.S. military and police assistance in the
Hemisphere exceeded the economic and social aid it also provided. This was a
new trend as even during the Cold War the economic aid exceeded the military one.
From 2002 to 2003, the number of Latin American troops trained by U.S.
programmes, mostly stationed in the drug war states , doubled (Chomsky, 2010;
LeoGrande, 2007:357). At the beginning of his mandate, President GW Bush
promised Latin America would be a priority for U.S. foreign policy. The challenge
for the new administration was to set a new relationship that would take into account
the region s economic and social worries and its call for change (LeoGrande, 2007).

Knowledge Management Is Critical to the World Bank s
Future
Knowledge Management is critical to the World Bank s future. Knowledge
Management is a subset of IT and that the needs for KM were easily satisfied with
technology based solution. A first shortcoming lies with senior leadership, many at
the top of the bank equated KM early on with various IT based initiatives such as
the global distance learning network or the development gateway. As a result,
leadership never fully appreciated the peculiar characteristics of knowledge at the
bank or its deeply social aspects.
There are few issues in this case study some of the important issues are:
Lake of coordination between the middle manager and operation staff
Reporting to CIO
Inconsistency in one team
Institutionalizing KM practices into their day to day work.
Knowledge Management is one of the most recent change administration
methodologies, basically investigated by business, administration and steadily by the
IT groups. The objective of knowledge management is to capture, store, keep up and
convey valuable learning in a significant structure to any individual who needs it
wherever and whenever inside an association. Fundamentally, knowledge
management is coordinated effort at the association level. Knowledge Management
can possibly alter the method for joint effort and use registering.
As information systems have multiplied in associations, it has been a regular
conclusion to expect the expanded capability of utilizing current data innovations, for
example, Internet, intranets,
Karl Marx s Influence On Society
Karl Marx emphasized conflict in the society due to consumerism, religion,
intersectionality. He saw this conflict and determined that hidden structures can
benefit him and others by using the term of ideology which can rely on true or
false consciousness. Marx was a unique sociologist who expressed his own ideas in
various ways. Applying to Marx s Theory towards slavery, it showed how the society
use to be and how it impacted the slaves to be part of their culture to manifest the
society. Slavery was based on consumerism through religion, capitalism, culture, and
community to enrich the economy. Slavery had an huge impact towards the society
due to their production of goods which were dominated by merchants and were being
paid a certain sum per finished piece, once they had the item they sold to a distant
market. For example: During the market Revolution , American merchants goals were
to think big and risk their money towards the American nationalism which they
decided to invest their money in the putting out system. The putting out system
helped merchants to increase wealth by managing the labor cost, numbers of
workers, production goals, and shoe styles to fit certain markets. (Ch. 12 pg 287;

outcomes which distinguished the study of the real economic and social life between
humanism and naturalism. In Marx s opinion each individuals were motivated to gain

Crystal was devastated. She said she could not forgive and forget this insensitivity
since then. She was in tears. I wanted to console her, but she had more to say:

Racial Inequality And Police Brutality
Racial inequality is a disparity in opportunity and treatment that occurs as a result of
someone s race (Racial Inequality, 1996 2017, line 1). Racial profiling and police
brutality falls under racial inequality. According to Nazgol Ghandnoosh (2017),
Officers racially biased use of discretion either intentional or unintentional is one
cause of racial disparities in policecontact that are not explained by differences in
crime rates (p. 6). When one group is targeted more than another it will cause the
group that is targeted the most to have more involvement. The crime rates for black
peopleis higher than those of white people because more black people are arrested
than white people. Nazgol Ghandnoosh (2017), states that, Almost

Based on the changing electronic industry and business demands, Custom Molds
should correct major issues by adopting the following recommendations. The
molding process should focus on small batch sizes and purchase more small and
customizable machines. More workers should be hired to oversee the production
since there is more labor needed to prepare the machine for each customized mold.
The plastic parts process should focus on few but large capacity specialized
machines. Fewer workers will be needed to oversee this process because there are
few setting changes needed. To control the problem of late deliveries, a better
communication system between offices should be implemented so workers do not
need to walk back and forth between offices. Orders should also be accepted based
on the ability to complete the product in the time that is promised to the customer.
More efficient communication between all departments would result in a more
accurate estimated delivery time. To control errors resulting in defective parts,
Custom Molds should invest in moving the testing center to a more centrally located
area. More frequent testing and less walking will increase efficiency and decrease
defective products. An alternative option to the recommendations listed, is for

Made to Order Hero
Many times in life we encounter an individual that touches us in some profound way.
The relation of this individual to the person they are influencing is as diverse as the
personal experiences that causes this admiration. This individual, or hero, can impact
and totally change the direction of someone s life. A herocan be anyone, from a
professional athlete, to a public service figure, to a relative or parent. Each hero is
defined by an individual s definition of what a hero is and should be. The definition
of a hero has not always been this liberal. As time and the world have progressed so
has the definition of the word hero. The poems Beowulf and Sir Gawin and the

Beowulf followed what he believed was right, helping out a friend in need and
keeping his word. Gawain searches out the Green Knight and fulfills his
commitment because it was how he was raised; it was the thing the law said was
right. ...There were penalties for violation of the spoken bond in medieval society,
related legality to Christian morality violation of contracts with man to breaking
faith with God (Vantuono XXVI). Gawain keeps his word in order to stay right
with the Lord God, whereas Beowulf does not appear to be influenced by God, only
by himself and his belief that he should help out others whom had previously aided
he and his family.
Perhaps the story within the Poem of Gawain and the Green Knight provides us
with the best possible view of the Christian influence on the heroic code. The story
itself seems to somewhat parallel the Biblical story of the life of Jesus Christ.
Gawain steps forward and takes on the Green Knight for King Arthur, knowing full
well that in one year and a day the Green Knight was to repay Gawain with the
same action. This is very similar to the idea that Christ came to earth to take on the
sins of His people, knowing full well that the result would be His death instead of
ours. Later Gawain must fend off the temptations offered by others to flee and not
keep his word. Gawain speaks
The String Theory
Sub atomic particles, known as quarks, electrons, photons, and neutrinos were strewn
across expanding space. Equal amounts of matter and antimatter particles began to
collide and annihilate each other. Gravity, strong and weak nuclear forces, and
electromagnetic forces soon came into play. As the universe started to cool,
fundamental particles called quarks began to smash together forming protons and
neutrons. They, in turn, merged to create the nuclei of simple elements, beginning
with hydrogen, helium, and lithium. This primordial soup contained the building
blocks for everything in the universe. VoilГ, the universe was born.
Matter and energy continued to expand. Static electricity and gravity brought the
expanding matter together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Strings would also give rise to the forces of nature: gravity, strong and weak nuclear
forces, and electromagnetism. Atoms contain protons that produce a positive charge,
neutrons that produce a neutral charge, and electrons that produce a negative charge.
According to the theory, electrons and quarks, which make up protons and neutrons,
were produced by minuscule, one dimensional, randomly behaving, vibrating strings
of energy. A property of matter or force of nature would be the result when the strings
vibrate and interact with each other.
Not so fast, physicists filled blackboard after blackboard with mathematical equations
to prove that the theory was consistent with the force of gravity. Did not happen. A
theory had to be established that was compatible with the gravitational forces in the
enormous universe and the microscopic world. The modified theory had to include
quantum gravity, a high frequency, string vibration that would produce a graviton. A
graviton is responsible for curving surrounding space. The Super String Theory soon
replaced the Not so super String Theory. Particle/wave duality of matter and energy
on the quantum level joined the mix, boson/fermion partnerships known as
supersymmetry brought the wine, quantum gravity served the hors d oeuvres, and the

Timing In Romeo And Juliet Essay
The Story of Romeo, Juliet, Time One of the most important things in our life is
timing. Timing can be the difference between life and death; or between love and
hate. In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, timing
is critical. All throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet are constantly in a battle
with timing. All they want is to be together and live a happy life, but timing has
different plans for them. In the beginning of the play, Lord Capulet wants to marry
Juliet off to Count Paris. As time progresses she falls more in love with Romeo,
than the idea of marrying Paris. When Juliet goes to Friar Laurence s cell, Friar
Laurence catches Juliet by surprise when he says, Go home, be merry, give consent
to marry Paris .(4.1.98 100) Part of his plan was to have Juliet and her parents on

Evolution Of Juvenile Corrections
The evolution of juvenile detention centers has brought about tremendous growth of
the juvenile correctional facilities. With this growth, it is evident that there has been
a decline in what is most important for these centers. The evolution of juvenile justice
facilities involves a transformation that begins with the simple task of separating the
youth from adults. The progression of youth detention centers began in the 18th
century and is still building as the system grows into the future. The idea of a
juvenile corrections facility began with the creation of the hospice of San Michele,
located in Rome, we can see that there was an increase in rehabilitation goals.

Elmira was the first reformatory in America. This facility was originally made for
adult offenders, but they used it for prisoners ages 16 to 30 years old who were

Zebulon Reed Brockway established the Elmira program and made it an educational

believed that prisons should not neglect the education or training of prisoners. The
education included the options of religious studies, military training, academic

interest in pursuing the military after they were released. This program began in

Examples Of Whistleblowing
When a person feels that something illegal or ethically wrong is happening in
their place of work, what can they do? That person has the right to go to their
administration about the acts that are occurring. (GAP) This action would be
called whistle blowing. Furthermore, whistle blowers would be protected by law
from repercussions from coming forward about the ethical or illegal issue.
(Hallman, 2012) The organization that protects accountants and other financial
professionals within the field of business is the IMA. For example, one case
involving a whistle blower within the accounting field was in 1989. In 1988 James
Holzrichter, who was a young auditor with Northrop Grumman in Rolling
Meadows, IL, suspected fraud within the company. He noticed that on certain
transactions, Northrop was inflating their costs to get larger payments in return
from the government agency they were auditing.(Behn) At the same time, his co
worker Rex Robinson who was a test engineer for the company noticed fraud was
occurring. (Merle,2005) Robinson and Holzrichter noticed that the parts weren t
even being tested, they were throwing them away. They wiped these parts from the
inventory to make them look like they were already used, so they would have to
buy the parts over again to actually finish the project. In the end, they were billing
them for twice for each part used in the process. (Carozza, 2015) Holzrichter and his
co worker Rex Robinson found they were doing these acts on many of
Managing Over The Horizon Risk
Managing Over the Horizon Risk There are known knowns. These are things we
know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things
that we know we don t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are
things we don t know we don t know Donald Rumsfeld As the financial crisis seems
largely behind us and the worldwide economy continues to improve, people are
getting excited; looking away from the latest disaster to the next big thing.
Businesses are successful once again and unemployment is hitting new lows. When
people get this excited, it is time to think about risks. When asked what could
possibly go wrong now, most people think of scary low probability events (Black

Many days out those in the weather business were warning that conditions may be
right for a winter storm that is out on the horizon. A couple of days ahead of time
the same people were saying that it was probably going to hit the North Georgia
that is an emerging threat. And then it was real but little had been done to mediate
its effects ahead of time. Another example would be the 2008 global financial
crisis for which there were plenty of warning signs such as the subprime lending
meltdown in 2007. A great example of preparedness can be seen in the way LA is
planning to tackle the next big earthquake with a 126 page package of earthquake
safety recommendations focuses on fixing the three weakest elements of L.A. s
urban infrastructure: its pre 1980 buildings, its creaky, convoluted water system and
its vulnerable telecommunications network. Executives face an ever increasing
portfolio of risks that is broader and more complex. The world is getting more
volatile as it gets more connected, while external and geopolitical over the horizon
risks are becoming both more relevant and tougher to manage with globalization.
Due to this all organizations need a unique way of thinking about OTH and emerging
risks, and in many cases a dedicated process to manage these risks. It is imperative
for organizations to have a structured approach to tracking over the horizon events
that could negatively impact company performance or potentially bring
Analyzing Jonathan Lethem s Star Wars
Throughout 13, 1977, 21, Jonathan Lethem explains how he was thirteen years old
and watched Star Wars twenty one times in the summer of 1977. He goes into detail
about each time and explains how he saw things differently or how his experience of
the movie had changed. Later in the story, Jonathan states that his parents got a
divorce and his mom has health issues. The topic of the story transforms at this time
and puts more focus on how he used Star Warsas a distraction from his real life. The
story starts out as Jonathan telling his audience how he watched Star Wars twenty
one times in a four month time frame. He states that he was the kid who went to the
movie theatre alone and would slip by the ushers, in fear they would recognize him.
Jonathan goes into detail about his different experiences of seeing the movie. He
states that every time he saw Star Wars, he was in the Loew s Astor... Show more

He explains that his parents got a divorce a couple years ago, and his mom was
diagnosed with a brain tumor. She had seizures, two unsuccessful surgeries and dies
a year from the summer of Star Wars. By adding those details, Jonathan makes his
audience realize why he watched Star Wars so many times. It was his distraction from
the real world, and it gave him time to focus on something other than what was going
on at home. The way that Letham told this story was a unique and informal technique
to grab the audience s attention. It starts out, by showing Jonathan s obsession with
Star Wars, and then it turns into how Star Wars was Jonathan s distraction from his
mother s death. He numbered his writing from one to twenty one, by doing this, he
symbolized the number of times he went to Star Wars. Jonathan could have told the
story by discussing his mother s brain tumor first and then went into how he dealt
with it. Then, he could have grabbed his audience s attention at the beginning. I found
it hard to stay focussed on this
Differences In The Emotional Lives Of Animals
In this course, I discovered many new things and expanded my knowledge as I
learned about animal emotions, their representation in the media, their moral status
and more. When reflecting back over the wide array of topics covered in the
course, there were two areas that resonated strongly for me and made me reconsider
my own views. The first was the discussion of the hierarchy of animal rankings and
how that affects their treatment. The second was the exploration of the capacity
animals have to feel emotions and their anatomical similarities to humans. In the
following paragraphs I will reflect on these two areas of the course, current opinions
related the each area and why they had such a profound impact on me.

Animals may experience different emotions and express their emotions differently
however differences between emotions in animals, humans and non human animals,
are by degree and not kind, as argued by Darwin (Bekoff, 2000). Despite these
commonalities, humans do not treat all animals equally, for example in most cases a
mouse does not receive the same treatment and care as a dog. In this way, humans
rank animals and modify treatment towards them based on these rankings. Mark
Bekoff in the Emotional Lives of Animals discusses this dualistic viewpoint and how
our treatment of animals depends on context and the type of animal (Bekoff, 2007).
He uses the example of scientists and their treatment of the animals they keep at
home versus the animals that are kept in the lab to explain this dichotomy; scientists
will perform experiments on the animals kept in the lab but not the animals at home.
This is directly applicable to me because I am a science student and am therefore
constantly surrounded by research and literature that involves the use of laboratory
animals. I previously put little thought to the use of a laboratory rat or mouse in

furnishing all the main floor rooms with live plants and furniture, Stacy was able
to sell the house in only 59 days! This was 180 days faster than the last home that
sold on the street and for $5000 more dollars. Stacy ended up saving her home
sellers $12,000 by selling the home faster. Stacy s story is testament to not only the
home staging activities, but also in pricing the home properly. It s typical for sellers
to price their home higher than the fair market value for their home, but by managing
the process Stacy was able to demonstrate her expertise and guide her client s
decision and get the property sold.
Consequently, Stacy and Kim now know the benefits of having a knowledgeable
stager as your partner. They were both able to produce excellent results that
benefited their clients. Stacy and Kim now employ a home stager as part of integral
contacts so they can work to bring in new clients and expanding her business instead
of spending her weekends battling crowds at estate sales and doing cosmetic updates

Essay On Reading. 03 critical reading continued essay by aaron smith Essays Cognition

  • 1. Essay On Reading Writing an essay on the topic of reading might seem deceptively simple at first glance, given the familiarity most people have with the act itself. However, delving into the intricacies of crafting a comprehensive and engaging essay on reading presents its own set of challenges. To begin with, defining the scope of the essay becomes a critical task. Reading is a vast and multifaceted subject, encompassing various forms such as literature, academic texts, online content, and more. Narrowing down the focus to make the essay cohesive and meaningful requires careful consideration. Furthermore, striking a balance between personal insights and broader perspectives is crucial. While sharing personal experiences with reading can add depth and authenticity to the essay, it's essential to incorporate broader research, literary analysis, or historical context to provide a well- rounded view. The challenge deepens when attempting to capture the universal aspects of reading that resonate with a diverse audience. Readers have different preferences, habits, and motivations, making it challenging to create an essay that universally appeals to all. Crafting a compelling introduction and conclusion is another hurdle. The introduction should grab the reader's attention, conveying the significance of the topic, while the conclusion should leave a lasting impression and perhaps inspire further contemplation on the subject. The struggle to maintain a coherent and logical flow throughout the essay is a common hurdle. Ensuring that each paragraph seamlessly transitions into the next, building a cohesive narrative, is an art in itself. In addition, the challenge lies in avoiding clichГ©s and generic statements that fail to add value. Originality and uniqueness are vital, demanding a creative approach to the topic to stand out from the myriad essays on reading that already exist. In conclusion, writing an essay on reading, despite the apparent simplicity of the topic, requires careful consideration, research, creativity, and a keen understanding of the diverse nature of readership. The process involves navigating through the complexities of personal experiences, universal truths, and literary analyses. Nevertheless, mastering this challenge can result in a piece that not only informs but also inspires and captivates the reader. • 7. Factors Affect The Chemical Rate Of A Chemical Reaction Introduction: Enzymes are a protein that replicates a catalyst which helps chemical reactions begin to move without the enzymes being changed in the process. Enzymes work to complete only one task. But there are a variety of different enzymes in the body that each one has their specific task to complete. Something that enzymes do is they are used in making foods, used for digestion. Many of the chemical reactions in the body have a bunch of energy in them when they happen, which means it can occur in a faster amount of time. Enzymes speed up a reaction by lowering the activation energy . An inhibitor makes the reaction slow down. In this experiment we are testing how three factors affect a chemical reaction. We will be representing different objects or materials as the enzyme. We will use three objects or body part: a taped hand, a hand with a tennis ball in it, and a rendered hand. The importance of this experiment is to see how three different elements affect the chemical rate of a chemical reaction. Materials and Method: In this lab we needed supplies to help us conduct this experiment to make it successful. The materials we used were 100 pennies, which represent the substrates. We also needed a hand to help us represent the active site. The person in this experiment was the enzyme. The tennis ball in their hand is represented by second enzyme we were testing. We used tape to help us with the third enzyme trial. We used a stopwatch to help us record how long we had to

  • 9. My Most Embarrassing Moment Essay It was in December, during my Christmas vacation, when I decided to start looking for a summer job. There were many options but the job I decided to apply for was a position as a lifeguard at a waterpark. I filled out an application and was accepted almost immediately. The only thing left was the lifeguard training; little did I know that it was going to be an experience I would never forget. The aquatic rescue part of the training was held the week of my spring break. I was excited about the training session because I was finally going to meet some of the people that would work with me and get to see what the job was like. The day before the session a meeting was held for all the people who had been accepted. Here I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This made my body less buoyant and my speed somewhat slow. There were two sixteen year old girls in the lanes on either side of me who swam with the agility of dolphins. These girls and everyone else beat me to the finish, which did not help my nineteen year old ego. I wanted to crawl away and hide but was determined not to let myself be outdone. The next part of the training turned out to be the toughest. We were required to dive ten feet to the bottom of the pool and retrieve a ten pound weight. Once the weight was brought to the surface we were supposed to tread water for two minutes while keeping the weight above the water line. This appeared to be simple so I dived in, expecting an easy time. I had no trouble getting the weight to the surface and proceeded to tread water with a feeling of undoubtable success. But once again my anti floating physical quality began to take effect. At one minute and thirty seconds I began to sink and within the next fifteen seconds my head was submerged and I was fighting for air. The water from the pool began flowing into my mouth with each desperate grasp for air; it felt as if an ocean were draining into my body. I remember hearing from under the water the instructor s muffled voice counting down the last ten seconds of the exercise. When it was all over I slowly made my way back to the pool s edge where I was informed by the two young girls that they had no difficulty

Khan Academy explains, The second law of motion states that force on an object is equal to the mass of the object multiplied by its acceleration. If we apply this law to a football, it tells us that the amount that the ball accelerates depends on the force applied by the quarterback and the mass of the ball. ( Football Physics ). The less mass a ball has the further it s potential to travel is. The lighter the ball is, the faster and further the ball can move. Additionally, Khan Academy writes, The second law also tells us that acceleration of the football also depends on the mass of the football. If the player is throwing an extra heavy football, the acceleration of the football would decrease compared to a lighter football that is thrown with the same force. ( Football Physics ). This quote explains that the lighter a ball is, the farther a ball can be thrown. Also, the farthest a ball can be thrown depends on the amount of force the person throwing applies to the ball. ( Football Physics ). When a ball is lighter due to less air pressure, the quarterback will be able to throw it further. The less mass makes the ball lighter, and this will allow the wind to be able to carry the ball

I stand upon the spot where, seven years since, I should have stood, here, with this woman, whose arm, more than the little strength wherewith I have crept hitherward, sustains me at this dreadful moment, from groveling down upon my face! Lo, the scarlet letter which Hester wears! Ye have all shuddered at it! Wherever her walk hath been wherever, so miserably burdened, she may have hoped to find repose it hath cast a lurid gleam of awe and horrible repugnance round about her. But there stood one in the midst of you, at whose brand of sin and infamy ye have not shuddered! He wants to remain true to himself and that means being honest with not only himself, but also being honest to society because as a Puritan, they are all one. So

To compensate for this, many are looking towards helping older adults stay in their home for as long as possible, even if they experience functional or cognitive impairments. This idea is known as aging in place. In the USA, 95% of adults over the age of 75 want to age in place. There are benefits and challenges to aging in place. The benefits of aging in place are that it improves perceived quality of life and is cost effective, whereas the challenges include declines in cognitive and functional abilities of older adults, as well as time pressures on formal and informal caregivers who must visit older adults in their homes throughout the community (Connelly, Laghari, Mokhtari, Falk, 2014). Fortunately, there are technologies that can assist with aging in place. These technologies produce better health outcomes, lower caregiver burden, and save money over the life of the individual. There are several types of technologies which will be discussed in this paper, which include technologies that provide education and support social networking, technologies that support monitoring and management of health and well being, and chronic conditions, and finally technologies that support interactions with the healthcare system (Marchibroda, 2015). This research paper will show that the use of technology will greatly benefit the elderly population in helping them to age in place. This paper will begin

Despite the fact that the other people around him speak a foreign language, Jerry does not want to lose his pride. As described, the story takes place on what is considered to be a safe beach (182) and at the floor of the beach is a wild bay, (182) high up among red brown rocks (182). The beach adds a warm feeling to the story but the bay complements a darker mood and atmosphere, making the location dangerous. The current time period seems to be more modern and portrays how people can easily travel from one place to another without agonizing about other customs and languages, as Jerry is in a foreign country. The story embarks as Jerry and his mother visit the beach, but Jerry s mother feels that he his grown up enough to handle himself. She asks him, Would you like to go somewhere else? (182). After hesitation Jerry replies, I d like to have a look at those rocks down there (182). This shows that Jerry is growing older and wants to be like the older boys, who await him down at the bay. As the boys welcome Jerry to the beach, even though they can t communicate; Jerry his happy to be with them and learns about the tunnel and how they were going through it. As the story advances Jerry becomes less and less afraid of the sea and starts to train by dipping in the

What are these other serious illnesses that are caused by group A Streptococcus? What is group A Streptococcus? Group A streptococci are bacteria commonly found in the throat and on the skin. The vast majority of GAS infections are relatively mild illnesses, such as strep throat and impetigo. Occasionally, however, these bacteria can cause much more severe and even life threatening diseases such as necrotizing fasciitis (occasionally described as the flesh eating bacteria ) and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). In addition, people may carry group A streptococci in the throat or on the skin and have no symptoms of disease. These bacteria are spread by direct contact with nose and throat discharges of an infected individual or with infected skin lesions. The risk of spread is greatest when an individual is ill, such as when people have strep throat or an infected wound. Individuals who carry the bacteria but have no symptoms are much less contagious. Madame Defarge, Sydney Carton, And Charles Darnay Charles Dickens uses the ambiguity of Madame Defarge, Sydney Carton, and Charles Darnay to demonstrate how passion for something or someone can dictate our actions and ultimately bring about a new persona in his novel A Tale of Two Cities. At first glance, Madame Defarge has a seemingly passive personality. She constantly knits and never speaks a word, but she is always watching. Dickens characterizes her in a way so the reader knows there is something more to her, but he keeps it a secret for the beginning of the novel. Dickens is commenting on the fact that humans do not just have positive and negative qualities that cause them to be ambiguous. There is some other motive and reason driving them to those opposing qualities. Sydney Carton is another ambiguous character compelled by his passion. In the beginning of the novel he is an isolated and depressed alcoholic. He is nicknamed memory because he acts as the brain of his boss, Stryver. He has no confidence in himself: I am a disappointed drudge, sir. I care for no man on earth, and no man on earth cares for me (Dickens 85). Carton never puts too much pressure on himself because he knows he is a failure. He seems to be a guy who floats through life along with the current. When he meets Lucie, he begins to change. He falls in love with her and even expresses his feelings. He promises he will do anything for her: I would embrace any sacrifice for you and those dear to you (Dickens 154). Then there are teams that come together on issues and work them out so that they can be as successful as they can, but with this season there is a huge issue that all teams are going to have to go through and that is the National Anthem. The evolution of juvenile justice facilities involves a transformation that begins with the simple task of separating the youth from adults. The progression of youth detention centers began in the 18th century and is still building as the system grows into the future. This facility was originally made for adult offenders, but they used it for prisoners ages 16 to 30 years old who were serving their first sentence for any crime (Allen, Latessa Ponder, 2016). At this reformatory, there was a lot of importance placed on education and trade training. Zebulon Reed Brockway established the Elmira program and made it an educational structure that included less religious values and more secular instruction. Brockway believed that prisons should not neglect the education or training of prisoners. The education included the options of religious studies, military training, academic studies or moral instruction. The military education was for prisoners who had an interest in pursuing the military after they were released. This program began in 1888 with Joseph F. Scott who saw the military training as a rehabilitation method. This military program was implemented at Elmira and encouraged responsibility and a chance at life outside of the jail or prison (Elmira Reformatory, 2017). The system used at Elmira were different from adult prisons because of their emphasis on the youth, academics and intensive trade training and forms of Elmira were produced all over the country. A couple of days ahead of time the same people were saying that it was probably going to hit the North Georgia that is an emerging threat. And then it was real but little had been done to mediate its effects ahead of time. Another example would be the 2008 global financial crisis for which there were plenty of warning signs such as the subprime lending meltdown in 2007. A great example of preparedness can be seen in the way LA is planning to tackle the next big earthquake with a 126 page package of earthquake safety recommendations focuses on fixing the three weakest elements of L.A. s urban infrastructure: its pre 1980 buildings, its creaky, convoluted water system and its vulnerable telecommunications network. Executives face an ever increasing portfolio of risks that is broader and more complex. The world is getting more volatile as it gets more connected, while external and geopolitical over the horizon risks are becoming both more relevant and tougher to manage with globalization. Due to this all organizations need a unique way of thinking about OTH and emerging risks, and in many cases a dedicated process to manage these risks. It is imperative for organizations to have a structured approach to tracking over the horizon events that could negatively impact company performance or potentially bring

It was his distraction from the real world, and it gave him time to focus on something other than what was going on at home. The way that Letham told this story was a unique and informal technique to grab the audience s attention. It starts out, by showing Jonathan s obsession with Star Wars, and then it turns into how Star Wars was Jonathan s distraction from his mother s death. He numbered his writing from one to twenty one, by doing this, he symbolized the number of times he went to Star Wars. Jonathan could have told the story by discussing his mother s brain tumor first and then went into how he dealt with it. Then, he could have grabbed his audience s attention at the beginning. When reflecting back over the wide array of topics covered in the course, there were two areas that resonated strongly for me and made me reconsider my own views. The first was the discussion of the hierarchy of animal rankings and how that affects their treatment. The second was the exploration of the capacity animals have to feel emotions and their anatomical similarities to humans. In the following paragraphs I will reflect on these two areas of the course, current opinions related the each area and why they had such a profound impact on me. All animals share the same basic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Animals may experience different emotions and express their emotions differently however differences between emotions in animals, humans and non human animals, are by degree and not kind, as argued by Darwin (Bekoff, 2000). Despite these commonalities, humans do not treat all animals equally, for example in most cases a mouse does not receive the same treatment and care as a dog. In this way, humans rank animals and modify treatment towards them based on these rankings. Mark Bekoff in the Emotional Lives of Animals discusses this dualistic viewpoint and how our treatment of animals depends on context and the type of animal (Bekoff, 2007). He uses the example of scientists and their treatment of the animals they keep at home versus the animals that are kept in the lab to explain this dichotomy; scientists will perform experiments on the animals kept in the lab but not the animals at home. This is directly applicable to me because I am a science student and am therefore constantly surrounded by research and literature that involves the use of laboratory animals. I previously put little thought to the use of a laboratory rat or mouse in
