need of food, but you are a bad
cook?
I am not going to make you a
good cook, so do not get
your hopes up. I am merely
going to teach you English
while I show you pictures of
food to make you more
hungry

• When you cook, you have to follow certain
instructions, correct?
• Let me give you an example of how to pour
yourself a bowl of cereal:
1. Choose the cereal you like the most.
2. Grab a bowl for your cereal.
3. Pour the cereal into your bowl.
4. Pour the correct amount of milk into your bowl of cereal.
5. Enjoy!

given commands.
• Think about it, did the instructions say: please,
if you want to, could you pour the cereal on
the bowl?
• I mean come on! Ask nicely!
• But, no. Commands are orders and you may
ask nicely, but must likely you do not.
• now, let’s think, when your mom tells you to
clean your room, does she ask nicely?
• Most likely, the first time she will, but since
