This document discusses how to envision and plan for the future of libraries. It recommends that library staff close their eyes and imagine what their library will look like in 2015-2016. Staff are encouraged to think positively about the future and not focus on barriers. The document provides questions to guide visualization of details about the library's services, spaces, processes, and community engagement. It also suggests identifying barriers that can and cannot be controlled and factors critical for the envisioned change. The goal is to focus on controllable factors and steps that can realize the vision.

Anne is Deputy Head of the Measurement and Evaluation at New Philanthropy Capital (NCP) and helps charities and funders to measure and communicate their impact. Her role includes developing tools and approaches for improving impact measurement for a wide range of organisations.
VAL was delighted to welcome Anne to present a workshop during our 2013 Future Focus Conference. Anne's workshop was all about helping charities tell a compelling story about what they do and the impact they have.
Specifically, Anne's workshop looked at the benefits of measuring impact, information about the 'theory of change process' to help charities understand what outcomes they are aiming to achieve, and helped groups start thinking about the type of data they need and how best to collect that data.
While the 2013 Future Focus conference is now over, VAL runs trainings and workshops year-round. If you'd like to learn more about training for your organisation, visit www.Valoneline.org.uk.
This presentation provides information from an interactive informational session given at the Oakland Literacy Coalition in 2015. The presentation was led by Nada Djordjevich, Paul Gibson and Julie Johnson of Gibson and Associates. The interactive workshop was designed to help non-profits and school-based services understand how to use program evaluation to improve their programs, inform funders and create accountability. The event was designed for an audience somewhat familiar with program evaluation and uses tools designed in multiple contexts, including municipal funding, public health, education, nonprofit arts, childcare and environmental agencies. The event was well-received with several agencies using the tools with their own agencies in follow-up meetings.
Creating Alignment with Non-Facilities Professionals - APPA 2016Sightlines
How does the facilities manager create alignment with non-facilities professionals and up the reporting ladder? How do you assure yourself a seat at the table where you can communicate past successes and future investment requirements to drive the institution forward and deliver best-in-class service? You can use data, like many facilities leaders nationwide, who are arming themselves with validated longitudinal data, peer comparisons, and predictive analytics. By creating a common vocabulary that can be understood and communicated from the boiler room to the boardroom, you become a better partner to all constituents at your institution.

Using case studies from our experience at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, we will highlight how embedding behavioural scientists within service design teams can bolster the impact and scalability of design solutions. We have found that adding scientific methodologies and evidence-based findings to the service design toolbox amplifies designer's ability to improve the patient experience. This combined approach helps to identify, test and measure promising low-touch design approaches in ways that correspond with the mental models of diverse stakeholders, facilitating smoother implementation and scaling of successful design solutions.

The high-tech, consumer-savvy, not-too-distant future may very well require different skills than we have traditionally hired for or trained for. Let’s talk about what skills we actually need to be building in our existing staff and looking for in those we hire. If we don’t have those skills ourselves, how do we hire for them? What do we need to know, how difficult is it to learn, how big a leap is it? Whether you’re a broker or a carrier, you need to know and we’re here to tell you!

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Close your eyes. Place yourself in 2015 or 2016. Visualize the library, probing the details with these types of questions:
What does the library look like to you in 2015 or 2016? What is happening in the library?
How is the library engaged with the community or campus? Physically? Virtually?
What are people in the community or on campus saying about the library?
What are politicians and community leaders or faculty or management saying about the library?
What is staff saying about the library? What is staff doing, or how they engaged in the library, & with users?
How is the library impacting users?
What has changed for the library since 2010? What is the same for the library?

What makes this vision inspiring? What’s in it for people? For clients? Staff? Board? The Community?
