Framing the opportunities for powerful metrics in libraries with joe matthewsRebecca Jones
The document discusses framing opportunities for powerful metrics in libraries. It suggests libraries focus on understanding stakeholder needs rather than what the library thinks people need. Successful measurement involves understanding context, aligning strategies with objectives, identifying impactful services, defining appropriate measures, managing measurement data, translating data into outcomes and impacts, and communicating results. The document advocates reframing measurement from outputs to impacts by starting with desired impacts in mind. It provides examples of studies measuring library impacts at various universities.

Meaningful Measures: Why size (and volume) doesn't matterRebecca Jones
This document provides a framework for developing a performance measurement system for libraries. It begins by outlining key underlying assumptions, such as the difficulty of establishing a "culture of assessment" in libraries. It then presents a multi-step framework for defining and implementing meaningful performance measures. The steps include understanding the context, aligning strategies and objectives, identifying services and programs, defining measures, managing measurement data, translating data into outcomes and impacts, and communicating results. Examples are provided for each step to illustrate how to apply the framework. The overall goal is to select measures that demonstrate the library's impact and value to its stakeholders.

This document summarizes Firelight's approach to building monitoring and evaluation (M&E) capacity among grassroots organizations. It discusses (1) Firelight's training approach which uses practical exercises to teach M&E concepts, (2) outcomes of training 43 partners in 3 countries which showed increased confidence and recognition of M&E's value, and (3) challenges faced including limited resources and high staff turnover. The training aimed to make M&E accessible and less technical for grantees.
Monitoring and evaluation can provide several benefits to charities and funders. It helps to increase their impact by focusing on theories of change and effective commissioning. NPC works at the intersection of charities and funders to strengthen collaboration toward shared goals. Measuring impact is important as it raises an organization's profile, motivates staff, and influences debates on "what works". However, before collecting data, organizations should determine if the data is important and if others already collect it to avoid duplicating efforts. Both quantitative and qualitative data can be used, and measurements should be taken before and after a program or service to assess impact while considering alternative explanations.

On October 25, 2012, Veena Pankaj of Innovation Network gave a 5-minute Ignite presentation at the American Evaluation Association's annual conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The presentation was titled, "Data Placemats: A DataViz Technique to Improve Stakeholder Understanding of Evaluation Results."

This document discusses how to use Raiser's Edge and action tracks to manage prospects through various stages from identification to cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Key tools include queries and reports to identify prospects, documenting research findings, tracking prospect ratings and statuses, creating action tracks to engage prospects according to strategic plans, and monitoring progress through action reports and dashboards. Action tracks make the process more efficient by stringing individual actions together, setting dependencies between actions, and automatically triggering follow-ups.
The document summarizes activities of the Digital Analytics Association (DAA). It discusses the DAA's history and growth over time, including an increasing number of corporate members, individual members, and local chapters. It outlines the DAA's educational programs and certifications, events, resources like reports and guides, and goals for further expanding its offerings in 2017.

Refreshing Evaluation in Support of the Social Movements RevivalInnovation Network
There is a growing social consciousness in America and a revival of using social movements as a vehicle for social change—with increasing nonprofit involvement and philanthropic funding support. Since the mid-2000’s there have been several notable movements that have taken hold of the public consciousness: the immigration reform movement and DREAMers, The Occupy Movement, Gay Marriage, climate change movement, Black Lives Matter, and a nascent, potential movement developing in protest of the Trump Administration. While evaluating movements has some parallels to established evaluation practice, it also represents some thorny challenges. In a session presented at the American Evaluation Association Conference on November 10, 2017, we explore and share what we are learning about evaluating social movements, including: what we know about social movements, their components, characteristics, and types; what aspects of social movements are ripe for evaluation; and what existing evaluation approaches are well suited to evaluating social movements.
Strategic Direction Setting For Libraries Nov. 2010Dan Wiseman
This document outlines Dan Wiseman's strategic direction setting process for libraries. It discusses Wiseman Consulting and Training's approach, which focuses on building commitment to a desired future through engagement and prioritizing actionable goals. Their process uses appreciative inquiry, gathers both quantitative and qualitative community data, and emphasizes staff and community involvement to develop priorities and an implementation plan. The document then provides examples of strategic planning processes at different levels, from a basic board-driven option to a more comprehensive community-engaged process.
Data Placemats: Construction and Practical Design TipsInnovation Network
Increasing stakeholder involvement throughout the evaluation lifecycle, not only enhances stakeholder buy-in to the final evaluation results, but it also ensures that the evaluator is taking into consideration multiple viewpoints to be able to provide a more comprehensive picture of a program or initiative. Data placemats, a data viz technique to improve stakeholder understanding of data, can be used to communicate preliminary evaluation results during the analysis phase of the evaluation life cycle. When done correctly, it offers stakeholders an opportunity to form their own judgments about the data and weigh in prior to the final report. In this session, the presenter will review the concept of data placemats, focusing specifically on the nuts and bolts of constructing a data placemat.
- A student group at Ryerson University is proposing the creation of a Business Analytics Zone to enhance data analytics education and collaboration. The group met with their industry advisor, a professor, and has received support from various university departments.
- Business analytics utilizes data and technology to analyze past business performance to gain insights for future decision making. It has applications across many industries and is in high demand, but many companies lack professionals with these skills.
- The proposed zone would foster collaboration between different academic disciplines and support data-focused events and startups. If approved, it could help address skills shortages and establish Ryerson as an innovation leader in business analytics education. A student survey found strong support for the initiative.

This document summarizes a presentation about how data and predictive analytics are changing expectations around accountability and student success in post-secondary education. It discusses how predictive modeling can identify at-risk students, but predicting risk is not enough - institutions must also link predictions to interventions. The presentation also explores opportunities to generate new insights from data and leverage online learning to fulfill its promise by embracing analytics. The PAR Framework collaborative aims to help institutions improve effectiveness and outcomes through common data definitions, benchmarks, predictive models, and an intervention inventory tool.

Putting Data to Work
This session explores changing data sensibilities at US post-secondary institutions with particular attention paid to how predictive analytics are changing expectations for institutional accountability and student success. Results from the Predictive Analytics Reporting Framework show that predictive modeling can identify students at risk and that linking behavioral predictions of risk with interventions to mitigate those risks at the point of need is a powerful strategy for increasing rates of student retention, academic progress and completion.

3. Why Is It a Struggle?
1. Libraries do not set targets for their measures.
2. Not enough understanding of stakeholders’ value

3. Measures not an integral element of services or
programs.
4. Value measures are not differentiated from
operating measures; outcomes are confused with
outputs, which confuses everyone.
5. No clear responsibility for managing measures.
