This paper discusses a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for load frequency control (LFC) in deregulated power systems, aiming to maintain frequency and tie-line power flow despite fluctuating load demands and parameter uncertainties. The proposed MPC outperforms conventional PI controllers in simulations, effectively damping frequency deviations and power flow changes with better robustness against disturbances. A decentralized MPC strategy is evaluated using a three-area power system model, demonstrating improved performance over PI control in handling large load changes and uncertainties.
