- 26 Previously, the only method to seal conveyor transfer points was to place rubber along the chute wall to act as a containment device. Tremendous pressures are created in the load zone by the conveyed product. These pressures act on the rubber seal forcing material from the containment system. While rubber is an excellent dust seal, it does a very poor job of containing large amounts of material.
- 13 The easiest way to define proper belt support, is to define improper belt support. Improper belt support is when the belt itself moves away from the normal belt line, allowing a gap between the rubber skirting and the belt. This is when the problem of skirt spillage starts. As the material travels along the belt, it can take several paths. As the belt moves down from the normal belt line, material becomes entrapped between the rubber skirting and the belt. This entrapped material will migrate along the belt until it reaches an idler. Tremendous forces are created at this entrapment point. the material will either cause grooving of the belt, scalloping of the skirting, fall to the outside area of the load zone, or travel down the belt as desired. Three of the four situations described are undesirable.
