2. CHE COSA SONO I RIFIUTI?
I rifiuti sono materiali di scarto o avanzo di svariate attività umane.
Esempi tipici ne sono i rifiuti solidi urbani, le acque reflue (contenenti
rifiuti corporei), il deflusso superficiale della pioggia in idrologia e in
particolare nei sistemi di drenaggio urbano, i rifiuti radioattivi e altri.

5. COME VENGONO SMALTITI?
Nei Paesi industrializzati la discarica è ancora il
sistema più diffuso per lo smaltimento dei rifiuti.
- La discarica a cielo aperto è la più dannosa per la
salute pubblica e per il paesaggio, per questo oggi è
solitamente sostituita dalla discarica controllata.
- Le alternative alle discariche sono limitate, costose
e spesso mal tollerate dalla popolazione locale.
- Una possibilità consiste nell’utilizzo
dell’inceneritore in cui vengono bruciati i rifiuti per
valorizzarli dal punto di vista energetico, producendo
vapore o energia elettrica. Normalmente gli
inceneritori però inquinano l’aria quindi devono
essere provvisti di attrezzature di controllo.

In conclusione non è stato ancora trovato un metodo
soddisfacente per lo smaltimento di rifiuti dannosi
per l’ambiente.
6. L’INQUINAMENTO È DATO DAI RIFIUTI?
La combustione dei rifiuti genera gas
acidi e metalli pesanti che producono
inquinamento atmosferico, provocano
l’aumento delle piogge acide e
contribuiscono alla tossicità delle
ceneri.
Inoltre, per le comunità costiere l’oceano è stato
a lungo un luogo dove scaricare i rifiuti urbani e
quelli industriali e ciò ha deturpato e inquinato la
maggioranza delle acque terrestri. Per finire la
costruzione di discariche e inceneritori sta
aumentando e ciò comporta una diminuzione
seguita dall’ inquinamento di luoghi destinati ad
ospitare gli organismi viventi.
