Who can understand modern warfare?
War has without a doubt changed extremely from what the term originally meant. Waris already
hard to define, according to Clausewitz, war is an act of force intended to compel our opponents to
fulfil our will... a continuation of political intercourse with a mixture of other means (Michael
Sheehan, 2014, 217). More specifically, war was between countries/states and it involved open
armed conflict. But war cannot be defined like this anymore in our modern times.
With open conflict between nations and non nation organizations, for example the War on

The link is to a report, titled Ecosystems and Human Well Being, A Report of the Millennium
Ecosystem Assessment. The report covers ecosystem changes and how that is intertwined with
humans and their well being. The ecosystems of the earth are complex and have many variables.
Human actions can have a significant impact on these ecosystems and the report aims to seeks and
apply scientific analysis and reasoning to how human actions have and need to change to support
these diverse ecosystems focusing on sustainability.

The first thing I learnt was the concept of value of an ecosystem resource. One example was a
country hypothetically cutting down and selling all the wood from its forests and farming all of its
fish. This can be reflected by a positive GDP (Gross Domestic Product) for that country. But what
about the value of the forests and fish? And what about the value that these two ecosystems no that
have been reduced and are non sustainable and unable to be replenished? This helped highlight the
concept of value from different perspectives and how ecosystems, sustainability and the effect of
change in ecosystems and the connection to humans needs to be calculated and represented. It also

Where I come from in Australia we are an island so we have unique animals and plants not
present elsewhere int he world. Some pests that have been introduced into he environment such
as cats, rabbits, cane toads prickly pears have had a devastating impact on local ecosystems.
While I was aware of the impact on local ecosystem from the introduction of foreign plants and
animals from local experience, the report highlighted the dilution of diversity where species are
