The Machine Chapter 2 Summary Of Kubo s
The machine throughout the story is seen as a triumph of technology but in reality, it destroyed the
nature of mankind, leading to its inevitable failure. The technology places a higher importance on
ideas and reason, sees little need for anything that does not serve a function. The machine removes
any sort of physical fitness since there is limited space there is no need for athletes. Their society no
longer passes on the gene for athleticism, slowly deteriorating and weakening the human body. Babies
are inspected to ensure that they do not include any strength or endurance. Technology started to
replace functions of the human body, making them no longer self sufficient. Kumo is able an
exception of this weakness allowing him to escape and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kumo understands the importance of man being the measure and being able to push oneself beyond
their assumed capacities. Mankind had lost their sense of struggle and perseverance since everything
they needed was handed to them and they lacked a desire for the unachievable. The humans lack goals
of any kind and see no need to have any kind of struggle or discomfort. Kumo is the only one to push
these limits of mankind through his exploration of the world above ground. He trains himself to climb
out from underground through walking up and down the platform until he was tired. He begins to
understand the concept of near and far, something the machine has removed from society due to the
lack of space and the reliance on technology to get one from place and place. Kumo realizes that one s
body is the measure for all that is lovable and desirable and strong (11). These humanistic
characteristic are not displayed throughout the book and he is the only one to not ignore the issue of
relying on technology when it cannot provide these things. He does, however, achieve an
understanding of the machine and the consequences that will subsequently arise from the dependence

Biological Engineering Personal Statement
Walt Disney once said You can design and create and build the most wonderful place in the world. But
it takes the people to make the dream a reality. As I approach my final year as a student here at the
University of Georgia, I find Mr. Disney s words to be quite true. Earning my biological engineering
degree is by far the most challenging goal I have ever set out to accomplish, but I have found that over
the years, my peers and the incredible faculty and staff at UGA have ignited in me a passion for
science and technology. It has taken many people to help make my dreams a reality and I am forever
thankful for the skills and the experiences this school has given me.

Frankenstein Fear Of Science Essay
Some readers have seen the novel as an illustration of the fear of the power of science. To what extent
do you agree with this view of the novel?
Frankenstein shows a contrast between the supernatural and the scientific and highlights that there are
elements of science which we should fear. This attitude reflected that of many at the time of writing,
as science began to gain credibility and was used more frequently, and Shelley shows this in her novel
through supernatural imagery and language, characterisation and setting. However, the novel can also
be seen not to fear science itself, but the way in which it is manipulated, again shown through the
characterisation of Frankenstein and his professors.
Shelley explores the power of science ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most obvious example of this is Frankenstein s own character. He is seen to be very arrogant,
immature, obsessive and melodramatic, especially in the earlier chapters of the book, an example of
which is when he describes that he was left to struggle with a child s blindness when it came to
studying science. This attitude best shows Frankenstein as someone who is not likely to own up to
their errors, such as later on, when the Creature has murdered William and Justine is punished for the
crime although Frankenstein internally realises that it is his fault. This links cleverly in to the idea that
it is not science itself that is frightening, but those who manipulate it. Frankenstein can also be seen as
a cautionary tale, although perhaps not directed towards science, but again, towards the person who is
using science to inform their behaviour and their studies. It is always very clear in the novel that it is
Frankenstein s own doing that has led to the catastrophe of the monster, as, even if Shelley is trying to
suggest that science itself is the evil in the text, it impossible to overlook the fact that it is
Frankenstein himself who has brought the Creature in to being. There is also another debate of nature
or nurture in the text which could

Essay about A Sorrowful Woman by Gail Godwin
In a world usually depicted as a man s world, a woman s role is not considered as significant and thus
can be repressed. It is why a feminist perspective or criticism comes into place, especially in literature.
By definition, a feminist criticism consist of scrutinizing the ways in which literature reinforces the
economic, political, social, and psychological oppression of women. (Tyson) In Gail Godwins s A
Sorrowful Woman, the leading female character is concentrated in her efforts in distancing from her
structured lifestyle. A feminist would critic Godwins story by as the female character is in pursuit of
peace and happiness and wants to escape from the role she has been implanted. The critic would

in pleasing his wife. A feminist critic would concentrate on the switching of the roles and state that
woman is entitled to escape from her role. She wants to peruse other roles other than wife and mom.
She is then summoned to the reality of a wife/mom free environment. A conflicts occurs when she
engages in this change because of her uncomfortableness with structure. While experimenting her new

she starts to feel captured and has to conform to the structure of the new character. Once she arrives at
the point, she gets rid off the role and goes on to the next. A feminist would view this character a lost
person in search of empowerment. She wants a life she is in control but does not want to conform to a
structured lifestyle which can possibly lead her to the destruction of her and her family. Throughout

Genetically Modified Organisms For Human Consumption
Humans have always lived a hunter gatherer lifestyle, but it was not until a couple thousand years ago
that they started to transition into an agricultural lifestyle (American Association of Cereal Chemists,
2007). In the 19th century, Gregor Mendel s genetic theory caused an increase in harvest hybridization
which gave rise to new genetic discoveries. This was the start of genetically modified organisms or
GMOs. Genetic engineering is the manipulation of genetic materials in organisms leading to a mix of
plants, animals and viral genes that do not occur naturally, or through crossbreeding methods creating
GMOs (Non Gmo Project). There have been on going debates on the safety of GMOs for human
consumption and whether they are hazardous for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Mexico where, around a few thousand years ago, ...Human intervention helped a wild strain of grass
develop bigger seedpods with more nutritious seeds (Berkin et al. 6). Their interference transformed
one useless crop into one of the most nutritious crops of their age: maize(corn). This would be the start
of genetic engineering. Claudia Reinhardt and Bill Ganzel, owner of the Ganzel Group
Communications, that specializes in writing, graphic design and video production, explains how
crossbreeding come to be in their article The Science of Hybrids. They state that the study of genes
began with monk Gregor Mendel, who crossbred varieties of garden peas and introduced the concept
of a gene. Mendel s theory was used by plant scientists to manipulate plant species. The American
RadioWorks, a program of the American Public Media, a station based public radio organization in the
U.S., published an article titled, History of Genetic Engineering, that gives an overview of how
genetic engineering started. The author acknowledges that the discovery of the three dimensional
double helix structure of DNA opened the door for genetic engineering. This discovery enabled
scientists to splice genes from one kind of organism into the DNA of another. Herbert Boyer and
Stanley Cohen were the first to successfully create a recombinant DNA

you may put this lump into a bowl to let it cool. Then give this lump to your kids to mess with my kids

oil, rosemary oil, honey, Aloe Vera gel or juice. Then mix well. All these add on ingredients are really
up to your personal tastes, hair texture, hair volume, hair length and the occasion. You also need to
avoid ingredients you or your skin are sensitive or allergic to. Some people may add something like
guar gum to give the gel more weight to define curly hair. And some may also add preservative.
Otherwise, this gel can be kept in small portions in the freezer. Whenever you need, just take out one
of the small portions, thaw it and it is good to go. To apply, crunch the gel using your fingers and

Old Testament
During the first century A.D. the Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, and the Nationalist all lived in
Palestine. Something that all these groups had in common was that they were all Jewish, however,
most did not identify themselves with any of these groups. Even though all these groups were jewish,
their definition and perception of the messiah were all different. Each group also dealt with Roman
rule differently, which cause a lot of problems. A big portion of the scribes, during the 1st century

traditions. According to Mark 7:5, one of the charges against Jesus, along with one of His disciples,
was that that they had violated tradition (Mark ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was conflict with the Pharisees because the Sadducees felt that their official roles in the Temple
gave them the power to make official interpretations of the Law as opposed to the Pharisees lay
interpretation (Robinson, 1986). The third religious party of Jews in Palestine in the 1st century were
the Essenes. Within the Essenes, there were different divisions. The Qumran Essenes are best known
from the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were discovered in 1947. Since the Essenes tended to be more strict
that the Pharisees and did believe that some of the traditions were valid. The Essenes, along with the
Pharisees, possessed a hatred towards the Romans and played a big role in the first Jewish revolt. The
Essenes did not believe that the priesthood of the Sadducees was for real. Likewise, the Essenes
believed that the time of the messiah was near and that after the messiah had established the new
kingdom, they would be restored as legitimate priests (Robinson, 1986). The final group of people,
were the Nationalist. The Nationalists tended to be very patriotic and devoted themselves to national
liberty for the Jewish people. After the revolt, the were later called Zealots. The Zealot beliefs mostly
aligned with the Pharisees and were believed to be an offshoot of the group. The Nationalists resisted
the Roman rule of the Jews. One branch of the Zealots/Nationalists was responsible for assassinations

Literary Britic And Literary Criticism Of Arthur Miller
Literary Criticism
Arthur Miller has been nominated as one of the major dramatists of the twentieth century. He is an
American playwright, editor, essayist, and novelist who earned his reputation for more than sixty
years. He was a dramatist who believes to bring change to society by speaking about real issues that
occur in society. Miller best known plays are The Crucible , Death of a Salesman , All of my Sons ,
and The View from the Bridge . He was once married to the sex icon Marilyn Monroe which gave him
a temporarily Hollywood spotlight for his work and personal relationship. Sadly, Miller died in 2005

Miller s theater work has been strongly influenced by a particular life experience that motivated him

Miller was living comfortably until his father business hit rock bottom during the Great Depression.
For that reason, Miller allows writing to become an outlet during the hardship of the Great
Depression. He later took the opportunity to attend the University of Michigan and prove to himself

Malcom X And The Allegory Of The Cave
Education is a life altering event that involves becoming more open minded. When one s horizons are
expanded they begin to understand and view more. The process of becoming knowledgeable through
education can differ from the individual or situation. The overall experience as well can change the
perception. Two passages, Learning to Read by Malcom X and The Allegory of the Cave by Plato both
contain an individual who goes through the path of gaining wisdom. Although both passages contain
similarities involving one going through an experience resulting in the enlightenment of education,
there are several differences in how the acknowledgement is approached and the type of predicament
the individual is in. The situation before the awakening in both passages involves being imprisoned
and living in the mindset of ignorance. Each predicament of one has a huge influence on how the
wisdom is obtained. The prisoner in The Allegory of the Cave has lived inside the cave since early
childhood where his legs and feet were chained to prevent any kind of movement and from turning his
head. (Plato 1). Because the cave dweller was restrained from movement, he was unable to escape
ignorance and was not able to gain knowledge. Malcom X as well was illiterate because African
Americans at that time were not exposed to education. The black race in America was living in
deafness, dumbness, and blindness (Malcom X 1). In order to liberate ignorance and to begin the

authors suggested that the tumor came from the ectopic gastric mucosa located at the ampullary region
since most of SRCC are found in stomach [9, 10], others declared that SRCC occurs from the gastric

metaplastic changes were are usually observed at the duodenal bulb in peptic ulcer patients [10].

Both the Puritans and William Penn Viewed their colonies as holy experiments . How did they differ?
Penn viewed his colony as a colony in which everyone was treated equally, including blacks, women

A Report On Toyota s Production System
Abstract
Toyota today is one of the leading lean example in today s manufacturing market. Starting back in the
1930 s with the idea of Just in Time to cut down cost in waste from overstocked storage rooms to a
better efficient assembly lines who produced what was needed at a certain time. The Kanban system is
one of the most used methods that the Japanese found during the 1950 s during a trip to United States
in a super market.
Kanban Systems
Lean manufacturing originated long before Toyota and Ford, however the thought that it originated
with Toyota is flattering since they are the ones who perfected it. By creating the Toyota Production
System (TPS), Toyota found a better way to produce large quantities of product efficiently with
eliminating the waste factor and while cutting down cost. Taiichi Ohno a former Toyota vice president
promoted the idea of JIT (Just in Time) which means producing the necessary units in the necessary
quantities at the necessary time. (Monden) Which leads to Toyota s ultimate goal in the TPS is to
improve productivity for better return in investment. To have continuous flow in a production system
Toyota sought out to achieve the concept of JIT and autonomation . Since the TPS is what creates the
parts who monitors the JIT system? The kanban system which is an informational system that controls
quantities being produce in each process. As the discussion carries on throughout this paper about
Toyota and their use of the kanban system the topic

Manifest Destiny And Western Expansion
Manifest Destiny
In the 19th century the settlers in America believed they had a mandate from God to expand west, this
is called the Manifest Destiny. This expansion would involve not merely territorial aggrandizement,
but the progress of liberty and individual economic opportunity as well. The Manifest Destiny shaped
America throughout the years. Three main things that revolve around the Manifest Destiny are the
moon race with Russia, western expansion, and how we found more resources and advancements in
technology. Western expansion was the main topic in the Manifest Destiny, but the Manifest Destiny
was not the only thing involved with western expansion. One of the other main factors in Western
expansion was the louisiana purchase. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson purchased the territory of
Louisiana from the French government for $15 million. The land that the bought stretched from the
Mississippi river to the Rocky mountains, and from Canada to New Orleans, it was also double the
size of the United States. James K. Polk was the 11th presidents of the United states of America. His
name is perhaps most closely associated with Manifest Destiny, because a year before he became the
president, the Manifest destiny started the embody the governing philosophy of the Polk
administration and its ardently expansionist aims. Polk s campaigning methods is the leading cause to
his victory of becoming the president of America. He campaigned on an expansionist platform,

Eminent Domain Should Be Used For The Good Of Mankind Essay
Imagine getting a visitor at your front door, and the visitor offers you a very generous amount of
money for them to take you property for public use. For some people it is the property they grew up
on, and for others it is the property that has been passed down through family generations. That is
what happens when private property owners experience eminent domain. Eminent domain can be a
wonderful thing for big companies and powerful leaders. On the other hand, people lose their homes,
or perhaps their farmland. Those who offer eminent domain often have big plans that can benefit a
community, but the huge loss here is people losing their homes. Most companies will only enforce
eminent domain if they have no other choice. Other companies do it purely for themselves. Eminent
domain should be used for the good of mankind, because it has the power to put some good places in
this world if done correctly. Doing some research on eminent domain I came across the April 2010
issue of the Yale Law Journal. One of the notes in that issue mentioned the history of eminent domain,
and it was called Eminent domain due process by Zachary Hudson. Hudson talks about how after
eminent domain was founded; it was argued that it the power of eminent domain was or was not in the
Constitution. Hudson says that Congress did not pass a statute authorizing the use of eminent domain
more generally until 1867 when it did so to aid in the development of national cemeteries following
the civil war

Benefits Of Supply Induced Demand
The graph below is an illustration of Reinhardt fee test that argues that supply induced demand is
identified when despite an increase in supply (S1 to S2), demand increases sufficiently (D1 to D3)
cause price rise (P1 to P3). Had there been no supply induced demand, an increase in supply would
have resulted in lowering of price (P1 to P2). As can be predicted, not only does this method raise
costs and threatens long term sustainability of the healthcare system, it discourages the efficiencies of
integrated care. Any referral to another health professional equates to loss of income for the doctors
and reduces the quality of healthcare. As figure 1 shows, despite having one of the highest healthcare
expenditures per capita, Canada ranks 10th out of 11 developed countries in terms of quality of its
healthcare system. Canada being one of the largest countries in the world, faces a unique challenge of
geographic distribution of doctors. The remote and rural areas have low population density and
because the FFS mechanism relies on volume of patients that a doctor attends to, it influences their
distribution with a higher number settled in high density areas. The disadvantages of the FFS payment
model coupled with poor performance of the Canadian healthcare system compared to its global
counterparts does necessitate a call to address the payment model to reimburse doctors. Not only will
this help to improve the quality but also help contain costs and enable viability of the

The Life of Saint Anthony
The life of Saint Anthony was vividly pictured in the narration of his life by no other person than St.
Athanasius. In St. Athanasius description of St. Anthony, he explored all areas where St. Anthony was
modeled as a saint. In light of this, the thesis for this essay states that classical genres to which St.
Athanasius modelled the Life of St. Anthony is autobiography/biography, mythology and adventures.
Throughout the description of St. Anthony s life, he conformed himself to these models. To this end,
this essay explores ways in which St. Anthony s life conformed to these models. One of the first ways
St. Anthony s life conformed to St. Athanasius model was his first step into asceticism (Robert 26).
Asceticism was the first major decision St. Anthony took after the death of his parents. The death of
his parents left him with the burden of caring for his sister and taking care of the vast property that
belonged to the family.
However, while on his way to church, he was meditating a bible verse but on stepping into the church,
he was baffled when he heard the Gospel being read instructing whoever wants to serve God to go and
sell of his property and distribute the profits from the sale to the poor. He felt that the verse of the
Gospel was meant for him so he did exactly as he was instructed (Robert 26). After selling off the
property, he distributed the proceeds amongst the poor. St. Anthony went to church again and after
listening to the Gospel again, he said he

How Did Thomas Edison Lose His Hearing
Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. His parents were Samuel and Nancy
Edison. Thomas was very curious from a young age. He started experimenting at the age of 5 when he
sat on chicken eggs to see why they needed to stay warm to be hatched. Thomas started out in a public
school but was told he asked to many questions and his teacher got mad at him. His mom was a school
teacher and she started homeschooling him to get him away from the negativity. His family moved to
Port Huron, MI when he was young.
Thomas s first job was being a newsboy on the Grand Trunk Railroad. This is where he lost most of
his hearing. There is no exact reason why he lost his hearing but there are a few of reasons that could
be true. He could have

The Dependence of Our Society on Technology
During the past two decades technology has seen an explosive progression. In this time we have come
from very few people having personal computers, let alone those that were able to connect to the
internet to having the equivalent of multiple of these machine in our pockets connected to the internet
at all times. In today s society many people opt to use their mobile device over a traditional computer
and these devices make it rather appealing and easy to do so. With applications that are built to make
life easier, games to waste a few minutes, movies and music at the touch of a finger who wouldn t
chose this over the alternative! The problem is when we become too dependent on these devices. Do
we really need to be connected twenty four hours a day? Is this technology restricting our ability to be
productive without it? Can the users succeed in everyday activities like traveling without these
devices? This is a very new topic for argument but one that needs to be thought about and analyzed.
What society must realize is that we are becoming too dependent on these devices and need to make
reasonable concessions or preparations in the case of a failure. When we take a look at the uses of
these devices we will find that they have an absolute plethora of uses. Smart phones can be used for
the original use of making phones calls, but that is really the simplest use of the device. We can
actually use these devices to replace GPS systems and aid in navigation, play video games,

Effects Of A Therapeutic Medical Play Session For...
The Effects and Perceptions of a Therapeutic Medical Play Session for Pediatric Surgical Patients
It has been documented that children undergoing surgery and their families experience high levels of
distress and perioperative anxiety. Stress and perioperative anxiety have the potential to cause more
harm on post surgical healing, in consideration of both physical and mental health, if not addressed
promptly and properly. Child Life Specialists are pediatric healthcare professionals who are able to
provide interventions to help reduce anxiety and increase developmental growth within pediatric
patients, provide family centered care, and facilitating therapeutic play interventions for pediatric
patients, all the while in the hospital environment (Child Life Council, 2014). Child life specialists are
able to meet these values and missions to create a standard of practice that the American Pediatric
Association recommends in all pediatric healthcare settings (Child Life Council, 2014). Typically,
when child life specialists are working with pediatric patients undergoing anesthesia for surgical
procedures they are able to participate as a part of the multidisciplinary health team to provide family
centered care and increase a patient and their families understanding on the medical procedure at
hand. A common intervention for pediatric patients undergoing anesthesia for surgical procedures
include medical play and medical preparation sessions.

What Is The Character Of Matilda Summary
Matilda is the story of an unwanted daughter who turns out to be something of a prodigy. Mr
Wormwood, Matildas father, is a dodgy second hand car salesman who rather foolishly sells old
broken cars to the Russian Mafia, Mrs Wormwood has a penchant for Latin American dancing and
dresses in garish costumes. The Wormwoods dislike their daughter Matilda intensely. They do not
understand her interest in books and encourage her to be like her older brother and fall comatose in
front of the telly . And Mr Wormwood even goes so far as to refer to Matilda as boy even though she
repeatedly corrects him. When Matilda heads off to school she surprises her teacher Miss Honey with
her mathematical skills and intelligence. But she falls foul of the child hating headmistress, the former
hammer thrower Miss Trunchbull. On the occasion I saw the show ten year old Emma Moore took the
lead as Matilda. Ms Moore is an enormously talented young actor with a charming singing voice to
match. She combines in the role intelligent confidence with a certain intellectual aloofness she also
achieved a lovely mixture of solemnity and mischief as the heroine who discovers that to beat the
wicked adults you sometimes have to be a little bit naughty , and she gets maximum value from the
songs too. A moment from Ms Moore that stands out the most for me is when she is talking in sync
with the male acrobat it is a intricate and sad piece of dialect but she performed it beautifully, speaking

Essay Texas Government
The government of the state of Texas is a difficult and complicated institution that is composed of
many different levels. The question comes in to everyone s mind at one time or another whether or not
to trust the government. It could be that people believe that the officials will take advantage of their
power, or simply people don t like the idea of being controlled by someone who is not a family
member or friend. To avoid this centralized power, the government is divided into stages and this is a
reasonable ground for trusting the government. Government runs this state and it does deserve to be
trusted. Our government here in Texas has three major parts that play a significant part in our decision
making process. These levels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even further simplifying this are sub committees which are divisions of the standing committees. This
simplification process has a lot do with why the government is trustworthy. If you take into
consideration the amount of levels that it takes to get something done, then there is almost no possible
way that the power can be obtained by one person. If issues are brought about, or arguments are
carried out, then the Conference Committees are there to resolve these differences. The most common
Governmental figure in Texas is the Governor. This power is nothing more than that of a celebrity
status. Although the Governor has the power to appoint independent boards and commissions, the
senate has to confirm these appointments. This is called senatorial courtesy What is meant when this
job is more like a celebrity is because of the Governor‘s ceremonial roles as acting as Chief of State.
This increases the Governor‘s popularity and prestige, and broadens the image of the office. One
important power or role that the Governor is responsible for is coordinating relations between Texas
and other states. This can definitely be an important factor. For example, the need of federal aid during
the time of an emergency can require the help of other states. The Governor also acts as the Chief
Budget officer of the state. Even though the presiding officer presides over this office, the Governor
does have some control.

Learning Asl After The Classroom
Introduction As a hispanic, it is a rite of passage to speak Spanish. With two full time working parents,
I learned Spanish from my care takers in a home environment. Having care takers that are immigrants
and not highly educated, grammar is not a strong suit and so it was not focused on when I was
learning. Since it was not a school environment, basic grammar rules were memorized through
examples not written and explained. In high school, I took half a year of American Sign Language.
Learning ASL after the critical age in a classroom, made it difficult for me to memorize the grammar
rules. On the first day of class, the professor came in and only communicated through sign language.
After explaining the expectations of the curriculum, she highly encouraged the class to speak in sign
language for the semester. My professor stressed vocabulary and word order and spent very little time
on facial expressions, which effect the meanings of signs. Along with ASL, I took two years of
Spanish in high school. Having two teachers, I had different experiences in the classroom. My first
teacher solely taught the class on memorization, minimal rules were mentioned and accents were not
addressed in class. Much of the class was taught in English and my teachers Spanish was not the best.
My second teacher challenged the students, he required all responses to be in Spanish, active
participation and daily homework. He focused on grammar rules and applying them in different
situations,

Influences Of Plato s Republic, Plato, And Marcus Aurelius
A leader is an explorer, cutting a path through the jungle for the rest of his group to follow, (Team).
The goal of a leader should be to set an example, and standard for others. The well known,
Machiavelli, Plato, and Marcus Aurelius have varying opinions of what a leader should be. Only one
view of a leader that I can agree with correlates with the voice of Aurelius most. Despite this, I must
admit that Machiavelli s and Plato s writings of the Prince and Republic offers a few point that can be
validated. The writings of Plato s Republic, Machiavelli s Prince, and Aurelius s Meditations all
contain a visions of a leader, but the descriptions of Aurelius are more closely related to what a leader
is. There are three impactful minds that affect how people perceive the essence of a leader, and they
are Machiavelli, Plato and Marcus Aurelius. In Plato s Republic, Plato describes what he believes a
leader to possess. He describes a leader to be the person who understands the forms, and seeks the
truth. He calls that person a philosopher king, or a joyful shepherd of sheep. This man/woman is able
to determine what is real and what is not. With this ability they are able to lead people with a
selflessness that cannot be matched by the other two figures. Moving on to Marcus Aurelius s outlook,
the differences show through plainly. Aurelius begins with the definition of stoicism, which is a Greek
philosophy that teaches the development of self control and fortitude as a means

Amaranth Case
Amaranth Advisors: Burning Six Billion In Thirty Days Introduction: In September, 2006, a large
sized hedge fund named Amaranth Advisors LLC lost $4.942 billion in natural gas futures trading and
was forced to close their hedge fund. Although Amaranth Advisors was not exclusively an energy
trading fund, the energy portion of their portfolio had slowly grown to represent 80% of the
performance attribution of the fund. Their collapse was not entirely unforeseeable or unavoidable.
Amaranth had amassed very large positions on both the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX)
and the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) in natural gas futures, swaps, and options. The trades
consisted mainly of buying and selling natural gas futures contracts with a ... Show more content on

Amaranth s success in 2005 and early 2006: It was due to its energy (primarily natural gas) trades.
Amaranth s main energy trader was Brian Hunter, a 32 year old Canadian and the former head of
Deutsche Bank s natural gas trading desk. In September 2005, Amaranth made more than $1 billion
when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the U.S Gulf Coast. These Hurricanes disrupted the supply of
natural gas, and gas prices soared to record highs, just as Hunter had predicted. The rise in natural gas
prices drove Amaranth s 15% return for 2005, as the rest of the portfolio performed poorly. Why
Natural Gas market was unique relative to other commodities: It is because of gaseous form of natural
gas made transportation difficult. Although natural gas could be liquefied and exported overseas, this
process was both expensive and potentially hazardous. Strategy used by the natural gas traders: One
common strategy is to bet on the price of futures for the winter contract months. Many factors can
influence the price of winter contracts, for e.g., a strong hurricane season that disrupts supplies just
before winter. Traders who believe either a cold winter or a strong hurricane season will occur will
take a long position in winter future contracts. The Collapse: In September 2006, things took a turn for
the worse for Amaranth. Hunter s natural gas bets began to backfire, and the fund quickly started to
lose money. By September 20,it was

The Influence Of Cartoons In Nazi Germany
A picture is worth a thousand words . This conventional and hackneyed cliché nevertheless holds an
essential truth that applies to images circulated in society. Not only do pictures express words, but
they also convey opinions, stereotypes, and negativity. The dissemination of images feeds the minds
of observers, and inevitably molds the opinions of viewers. Cartoonists are aware of this knowledge
and are able to channel the importance of this saying to deliver messages about situations, groups of
people, or historical events. They hold the power to influence society with the drawings they produce
and the additive features they incorporate into their cartoons.
Cartoons and altered images are a significant element in propaganda. The images ... Show more

exclude them from society. These cartoons clearly opposed Jewish animals as low status creatures

Mir34a Essay
MiR34a inhibits Aβ fibril uptake and autophagy flux
Regarding the compromised capability of Aβ clearance in AD, we suspected that miR34a may be an
indispensable player. To validate this, Aβ42 fibrils were prepared from Aβ42 monomer ex vivo and
used to treat glioma A172 and U251 cells. Aβ uptake was blocked by both transient transfection of a
miR34a mimic and stable miR34a overexpression (Supplementary Fig. 1B, Fig. 1A), but enhanced by
anti miR34a (Fig. 1B), indicating that miR34a suppressed Aβ phagocytosis in these cells. The fact that
enhanced and decreased levels of miR34a correlated with corresponding changes in intracellular Aβ
supports the notion that miR34a may slow down Aβ clearance by affecting its Aβ uptake and
degradation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since mature autophagosome fuse with lysosomes to become autolysosome in the very late stage of
autophagy, we asked whether miR34a could retard autophagosome lysosome fusion by examining the
co localization of EGFP LC3 and LysoTracker Red, a specific dye for live cell lysosome labeling [47].
As expected, EGFP LC3 puncta were dramatically reinforced in miR34a mimic transfected cells but
did not co localize with LysoTracker Red. This was acting similar to cells treated with bafilomycin A1
(Baf), which blocked autophagosome lysosome fusion. In contrast, E64D treatment induced a
remarkable increased EGFP LC3 puncta, which were well co localized with LysoTracker Red (Fig.
1D). Since lysosome associated membrane glycoprotein 2 (LAMP2) is also critical for autophagosome
lysosome fusion [48], we examined the effect of miR34a on LAMP2 expression using WB analysis.
MiR34a caused an unexpected increase of LAMP2 (Supplementary Fig. 1C), suggesting that the
mechanism by which miR34a blocked autophagosome lysosome fusion was not due to LAMP2. As
LAMP2 is mostly important for chaperone mediated autophagy, its increase might be a compensation
for the decrease in macroautophagy. In summary, the above results reinforce that miR34a
compromised Aβ degradation by, at least, blocking autolysosome formation.

James Doolittle And The Fiery Horse Called War
Imagine watching EVERYTHING fall, just collapse before your eyes. The synging sensation so
undeniably torturing, that you almost feel as if it were calling your name. Beckoning you to come
closer, almost with a mocking tone. Death and destruction reaching out to you with their malevolent
intentions and relentlessly grasping for you with ice cold fingers. This was the spine chilling notice of
which forcefully encouraged James Doolittle to take part in the fiery horse called war. Doolittle knew,
he would of course become involved in the aviation industry, and he was later known as the first man
not only to fly across the world in less than twenty four hours, but he did so in less than twelve!

James (Jimmy) H. Doolittle lived in Alameda, California for the first few years of his life(Biography).
He spent a majority of his youth in Nome, Alaska. It was here that he made record of becoming a well

but was the reason the family had moved to the breathtaking sublime city in Alaska(History). Jimmy
always did academically excel, which in a sense did hamper his passion for certain aircraft, and
interestingly enough, pointed him towards the mining industry. For instance, once Doolittle graduated
from the Manual Arts High School held in Los Angeles, he went to Los Angeles City College, only to
study mining at the University of California, Berkeley, of which he won admission, and then to the
School of Mines(New). Once graduated from college, he went on to pursue his childhood obsession of

Diffusion Lab Report

Lab Report
Introduction
Diffusion is defined as the movement of molecules or ions from an area of a higher concentration to
an area where they are in lower concentration. The driving force for diffusion is kinetic energy. The
speed of diffusion is influenced by the molecular, temperature, bumping bouncing off each other
creating equilibrium in the molecules. The atoms molecules are the building blocks of cells. Cells
have selectively permeable membranes that only allow the movement of certain solutes or solutions.
Diffusion is key to the functions in a cell. Diffusion helps to transport nutrients to cells in the body or
plants. Water is an example of this movement like absorption of water into roots.
Osmosis is the diffusion of a solvent or movement of water through semi permeable membrane from a
region of higher water or solvent into a potential lower region of water (hypertonic solute to a region
of lower water potential (hypertonic solute) to a region of lower water potential (hypertonic solute). ...

Hyperosmolality is usually related to hypernatremia and/or hyperglycemia. Identifying the cause and

hypertonic, isotonic, or hypotonic. When hypotonic, it may be hypervolemic, euvolemic, or
hypovolemic in nature. Determining the precise nature of the hyponatremia allows the clinician to
focus the therapy appropriately. The rate of development of hyponatremia is crucial to safe and
appropriate treatment. In acutely developing hyponatremia, hypertonic saline is required, whereas in
slowly developing hyponatremia, water restriction and slow correction is required to avoid the

The Machine Chapter 2 Summary Of Kubo s The machine throughout the story is seen as a triumph of technology but in reality, it destroyed the nature of mankind, leading to its inevitable failure. The technology places a higher importance on ideas and reason, sees little need for anything that does not serve a function. The machine removes any sort of physical fitness since there is limited space there is no need for athletes. Their society no longer passes on the gene for athleticism, slowly deteriorating and weakening the human body. Babies are inspected to ensure that they do not include any strength or endurance. Technology started to replace functions of the human body, making them no longer self sufficient. Kumo is able an exception of this weakness allowing him to escape and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kumo understands the importance of man being the measure and being able to push oneself beyond their assumed capacities. Mankind had lost their sense of struggle and perseverance since everything they needed was handed to them and they lacked a desire for the unachievable. The humans lack goals of any kind and see no need to have any kind of struggle or discomfort. Kumo is the only one to push these limits of mankind through his exploration of the world above ground. He trains himself to climb out from underground through walking up and down the platform until he was tired. He begins to understand the concept of near and far, something the machine has removed from society due to the lack of space and the reliance on technology to get one from place and place. Kumo realizes that one s body is the measure for all that is lovable and desirable and strong (11). These humanistic characteristic are not displayed throughout the book and he is the only one to not ignore the issue of relying on technology when it cannot provide these things. He does, however, achieve an understanding of the machine and the consequences that will subsequently arise from the dependence on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Frankenstein Fear Of Science Essay Some readers have seen the novel as an illustration of the fear of the power of science. To what extent do you agree with this view of the novel? Frankenstein shows a contrast between the supernatural and the scientific and highlights that there are elements of science which we should fear. This attitude reflected that of many at the time of writing, as science began to gain credibility and was used more frequently, and Shelley shows this in her novel through supernatural imagery and language, characterisation and setting. However, the novel can also be seen not to fear science itself, but the way in which it is manipulated, again shown through the characterisation of Frankenstein and his professors. Shelley explores the power of science ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most obvious example of this is Frankenstein s own character. He is seen to be very arrogant, immature, obsessive and melodramatic, especially in the earlier chapters of the book, an example of which is when he describes that he was left to struggle with a child s blindness when it came to studying science. This attitude best shows Frankenstein as someone who is not likely to own up to their errors, such as later on, when the Creature has murdered William and Justine is punished for the crime although Frankenstein internally realises that it is his fault. This links cleverly in to the idea that it is not science itself that is frightening, but those who manipulate it. Frankenstein can also be seen as a cautionary tale, although perhaps not directed towards science, but again, towards the person who is using science to inform their behaviour and their studies. It is always very clear in the novel that it is Frankenstein s own doing that has led to the catastrophe of the monster, as, even if Shelley is trying to suggest that science itself is the evil in the text, it impossible to overlook the fact that it is Frankenstein himself who has brought the Creature in to being. There is also another debate of nature or nurture in the text which could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Genetically Modified Organisms For Human Consumption Humans have always lived a hunter gatherer lifestyle, but it was not until a couple thousand years ago that they started to transition into an agricultural lifestyle (American Association of Cereal Chemists, 2007). In the 19th century, Gregor Mendel s genetic theory caused an increase in harvest hybridization which gave rise to new genetic discoveries. This was the start of genetically modified organisms or GMOs. Genetic engineering is the manipulation of genetic materials in organisms leading to a mix of plants, animals and viral genes that do not occur naturally, or through crossbreeding methods creating GMOs (Non Gmo Project). The Qumran Essenes are best known from the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were discovered in 1947. Since the Essenes tended to be more strict that the Pharisees and did believe that some of the traditions were valid. The Essenes, along with the Pharisees, possessed a hatred towards the Romans and played a big role in the first Jewish revolt. The Essenes did not believe that the priesthood of the Sadducees was for real. Likewise, the Essenes believed that the time of the messiah was near and that after the messiah had established the new kingdom, they would be restored as legitimate priests (Robinson, 1986). The final group of people, were the Nationalist. The Nationalists tended to be very patriotic and devoted themselves to national liberty for the Jewish people. The process of becoming knowledgeable through education can differ from the individual or situation. The overall experience as well can change the perception. Two passages, Learning to Read by Malcom X and The Allegory of the Cave by Plato both contain an individual who goes through the path of gaining wisdom. Although both passages contain similarities involving one going through an experience resulting in the enlightenment of education, there are several differences in how the acknowledgement is approached and the type of predicament the individual is in. The situation before the awakening in both passages involves being imprisoned and living in the mindset of ignorance. Each predicament of one has a huge influence on how the wisdom is obtained. The prisoner in The Allegory of the Cave has lived inside the cave since early childhood where his legs and feet were chained to prevent any kind of movement and from turning his head. (Plato 1). Because the cave dweller was restrained from movement, he was unable to escape ignorance and was not able to gain knowledge. SRCC is extremely uncommon in the ampulla of Vater, and only 32 previous cases have been described in the literature [3]. Because of its uncommon entity, the histological genesis of SRCC is still mysterious. While previous authors suggested that the tumor came from the ectopic gastric mucosa located at the ampullary region since most of SRCC are found in stomach [9, 10], others declared that SRCC occurs from the gastric type metaplastic epithelium [1] which appeared possibly due to the elevated acidity since the metaplastic changes were are usually observed at the duodenal bulb in peptic ulcer patients [10]. Penn viewed his colony as a colony in which everyone was treated equally, including blacks, women and the Native Americans. The quakers in Pennsylvania believed that everyone had the same rights and liberties, Foner writes, To Quakers, liberty was a universal entitlement, not the possession of any single people a position that would eventually make them the first group of whites to repudiate slavery. Starting back in the 1930 s with the idea of Just in Time to cut down cost in waste from overstocked storage rooms to a better efficient assembly lines who produced what was needed at a certain time. The Kanban system is one of the most used methods that the Japanese found during the 1950 s during a trip to United States in a super market. Kanban Systems Lean manufacturing originated long before Toyota and Ford, however the thought that it originated with Toyota is flattering since they are the ones who perfected it. By creating the Toyota Production System (TPS), Toyota found a better way to produce large quantities of product efficiently with eliminating the waste factor and while cutting down cost. Taiichi Ohno a former Toyota vice president promoted the idea of JIT (Just in Time) which means producing the necessary units in the necessary quantities at the necessary time. (Monden) Which leads to Toyota s ultimate goal in the TPS is to improve productivity for better return in investment. To have continuous flow in a production system Toyota sought out to achieve the concept of JIT and autonomation . Since the TPS is what creates the parts who monitors the JIT system? • 17. Manifest Destiny And Western Expansion Manifest Destiny In the 19th century the settlers in America believed they had a mandate from God to expand west, this is called the Manifest Destiny. This expansion would involve not merely territorial aggrandizement, but the progress of liberty and individual economic opportunity as well. The Manifest Destiny shaped America throughout the years. Three main things that revolve around the Manifest Destiny are the moon race with Russia, western expansion, and how we found more resources and advancements in technology. Western expansion was the main topic in the Manifest Destiny, but the Manifest Destiny was not the only thing involved with western expansion. One of the other main factors in Western expansion was the louisiana purchase. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson purchased the territory of Louisiana from the French government for $15 million. The land that the bought stretched from the Mississippi river to the Rocky mountains, and from Canada to New Orleans, it was also double the size of the United States. James K. Polk was the 11th presidents of the United states of America. His name is perhaps most closely associated with Manifest Destiny, because a year before he became the president, the Manifest destiny started the embody the governing philosophy of the Polk administration and its ardently expansionist aims. • 18. Eminent Domain Should Be Used For The Good Of Mankind Essay Imagine getting a visitor at your front door, and the visitor offers you a very generous amount of money for them to take you property for public use. For some people it is the property they grew up on, and for others it is the property that has been passed down through family generations. That is what happens when private property owners experience eminent domain. Eminent domain can be a wonderful thing for big companies and powerful leaders. On the other hand, people lose their homes, or perhaps their farmland. Those who offer eminent domain often have big plans that can benefit a community, but the huge loss here is people losing their homes. Most companies will only enforce eminent domain if they have no other choice. Other companies do it purely for themselves. Eminent domain should be used for the good of mankind, because it has the power to put some good places in this world if done correctly. Doing some research on eminent domain I came across the April 2010 issue of the Yale Law Journal. One of the notes in that issue mentioned the history of eminent domain, and it was called Eminent domain due process by Zachary Hudson. Hudson talks about how after eminent domain was founded; it was argued that it the power of eminent domain was or was not in the Constitution. Hudson says that Congress did not pass a statute authorizing the use of eminent domain more generally until 1867 when it did so to aid in the development of national cemeteries following the civil war ... Had there been no supply induced demand, an increase in supply would have resulted in lowering of price (P1 to P2). As can be predicted, not only does this method raise costs and threatens long term sustainability of the healthcare system, it discourages the efficiencies of integrated care. Any referral to another health professional equates to loss of income for the doctors and reduces the quality of healthcare. As figure 1 shows, despite having one of the highest healthcare expenditures per capita, Canada ranks 10th out of 11 developed countries in terms of quality of its healthcare system. Canada being one of the largest countries in the world, faces a unique challenge of geographic distribution of doctors. The remote and rural areas have low population density and because the FFS mechanism relies on volume of patients that a doctor attends to, it influences their distribution with a higher number settled in high density areas. The disadvantages of the FFS payment model coupled with poor performance of the Canadian healthcare system compared to its global counterparts does necessitate a call to address the payment model to reimburse doctors. In light of this, the thesis for this essay states that classical genres to which St. Athanasius modelled the Life of St. Anthony is autobiography/biography, mythology and adventures. Throughout the description of St. Anthony s life, he conformed himself to these models. To this end, this essay explores ways in which St. Anthony s life conformed to these models. One of the first ways St. Anthony s life conformed to St. Athanasius model was his first step into asceticism (Robert 26). Asceticism was the first major decision St. Anthony took after the death of his parents. The death of his parents left him with the burden of caring for his sister and taking care of the vast property that belonged to the family. However, while on his way to church, he was meditating a bible verse but on stepping into the church, he was baffled when he heard the Gospel being read instructing whoever wants to serve God to go and sell of his property and distribute the profits from the sale to the poor. He felt that the verse of the Gospel was meant for him so he did exactly as he was instructed (Robert 26). After selling off the property, he distributed the proceeds amongst the poor. On the first day of class, the professor came in and only communicated through sign language. After explaining the expectations of the curriculum, she highly encouraged the class to speak in sign language for the semester. My professor stressed vocabulary and word order and spent very little time on facial expressions, which effect the meanings of signs. Along with ASL, I took two years of Spanish in high school. Having two teachers, I had different experiences in the classroom. My first teacher solely taught the class on memorization, minimal rules were mentioned and accents were not addressed in class. In September 2005, Amaranth made more than $1 billion when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the U.S Gulf Coast. To validate this, Aβ42 fibrils were prepared from Aβ42 monomer ex vivo and used to treat glioma A172 and U251 cells. Aβ uptake was blocked by both transient transfection of a miR34a mimic and stable miR34a overexpression (Supplementary Fig. 1B, Fig. 1A), but enhanced by anti miR34a (Fig. 1B), indicating that miR34a suppressed Aβ phagocytosis in these cells. Since mature autophagosome fuse with lysosomes to become autolysosome in the very late stage of autophagy, we asked whether miR34a could retard autophagosome lysosome fusion by examining the co localization of EGFP LC3 and LysoTracker Red, a specific dye for live cell lysosome labeling [47]. As expected, EGFP LC3 puncta were dramatically reinforced in miR34a mimic transfected cells but did not co localize with LysoTracker Red. This was acting similar to cells treated with bafilomycin A1 (Baf), which blocked autophagosome lysosome fusion. In contrast, E64D treatment induced a remarkable increased EGFP LC3 puncta, which were well co localized with LysoTracker Red (Fig. 1D). Since lysosome associated membrane glycoprotein 2 (LAMP2) is also critical for autophagosome lysosome fusion [48], we examined the effect of miR34a on LAMP2 expression using WB analysis. MiR34a caused an unexpected increase of LAMP2 (Supplementary Fig. 1C), suggesting that the mechanism by which miR34a blocked autophagosome lysosome fusion was not due to LAMP2. As LAMP2 is mostly important for chaperone mediated autophagy, its increase might be a compensation for the decrease in macroautophagy. In summary, the above results reinforce that miR34a compromised Aβ degradation by, at least, blocking autolysosome formation. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
