Mankind has been searching for existential reasoning since our earliest beginnings. One of the
biggest questions, the one that keeps me up at night, How ought we to live? will be explained from
the viewpoints of Epictetus in his Enchiridion and Aristotle in Nicomachean Ethics. In this paper, I
will discuss both philosophies in principle and practice, while giving insight to how to they may
function in a modern world situation. Although both theories have useful guidance for navigating
the human condition, Aristotle s theory of virtue encompasses more of a real world schematic of
how to interpret oneself in relation to our surroundings through compassion rather than apathy.
Epictetus Enchiridion or Manual lays out guidelines according to his stoic doctrines. He
essentially instructs the reader to understand their relativity to nature and guide one into a
submissive state under the grander scheme of cosmological law. Epictetus tells us to let go of

Sebastian Junger began to write The Perfect Storm without even knowing it (Junger XIV). His
personal experience with the storm was ...standing on Gloucester s Back Shore watching thirty foot

about a Gloucester boat (The Andrea Gail) that was believed to be lost at sea. He saved a clipping

With considerable amounts of psychological research focused on volunteers, this paper will attempt
to indicate and reiterate the motivations of volunteers in non profit organizations through an
integrative style of thinking. A lot of research is based on the well being of a person in regards to
their motivation, so this research paper will target the potentially important aspects a volunteer
associates themselves with, with respect of their motivations and their well being. No real research
has been done, but through an internship at the American Red Cross, this will assist the integrative
style of writing to produce helpful information for volunteers and their motivations.
INTRODUCTION For many years, millions of people have engaged in some kind of volunteering
act that has contributed to a number of unimaginable hours of work. Of these people though, 49%
have represented the adult population with a quarter of them having devoted their time to 5 or
more hours per week for volunteering (the motivations to volunteer). These figures for volunteering
have been inspiring for psychologists to seek and understand the instrumental factors that lead

Death is not fair. Some see death as an enemy to defeat, others as a friend to welcome. Some die
young, others with long life expectancy. Some die quickly and violently, others slowly but
peacefully. Some die naturally without pain. Other, especially people with incurable illnesses,
such as cancer or AIDS, die by inches in great sufferings. Even though medical treatment and
palliative care are advancing at a fast speed, they are often not available or not effective enough
for those terminally ill patients. Besides devastating pain, what is the worst is losing control of one
s life and having to wait for deathin despair and indignity. As a result, an increasing number of
dying patients want more control over the timing and manner of their deaths and want to have the
option of a humane, peaceful death. A substantial majority of citizens believe that competent,
terminally ill patients should have the option of receiving medication that patients could self
administer to bring about a humane and peaceful death if pain and suffering become intolerable,
and a majority of physicians believe such patients should have this option (Tucker). Over the past
two decades, both professionals and citizens have shown a markedly favorable shift towards the
legalization of physician assisted suicide. Yet the translation of that endorsement into a feasible
legislation process has not followed that pace.

The Mathematics Involved in Deciphering A Crime Scene
Introduction
Though one may assume that the logistics involved with deducing the events that occurred at a
crime scene merely involve the reasonable deduction skills of an individual, in reality adequate
results can only be achieved through the use of certain mathematical methods. For this particular
investigation, the examples deal with a homicide case where it is known that there was only one
shooter and one victim. In order to analyze blood patterns and determine a time of death, the
Pythagorean Theorem and Newton s Law of Cooling must be utilized. This exploration is important
to my future as an attorney with a focus on homicide cases. It will be important to discover the
uncertainties associated with each of these methods, as they appear quite simple to begin with.
Proving the Pythagorean Theorem
In an effort to fully understand the Pythagorean Theorem, I must first examine a method used to
derive the formula. Whilst I examined several different methods, I was confused as to how a
person could think of such strategies. This method was first derived by Bhaskara. I used this proof,
because it best connects with the crime scene situation at hand. The use of multiple triangles and
squares mimic the makeup of a room.
Bhaskara s Proof: I decided to manipulate Bhaskara s method and make it more understandable for
my usage.

It was mid October in Rosewood. The adults were working at their jobs and most of the children
were attending school at the Palm Valley School District. It was a pretty normal life here for James
Miles, who was currently attending eighth grade at Palm Valley Middle School. He had a few

GLENDALE, CA Threatened with a lawsuit that claims their current electoral system discriminates
against Latino voters, the Glendale City Council, the Glendale Community College District Board
(GCCD), and the Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) have considered introducing measures
that would replace the city s at large votingsystem with council districts.
Attorney Kevin Shenkman sent a letter to the City, the GCCD, and GUSD threatening to file a
lawsuit, asserting that the election system of the three bodies violates the California Voting Rights
Act of 2001. Shenkman wants the aforementioned bodies to create specific geographic council
districts to replace the current at large voting system.

Chapter 6
Simon accidentally drops Joe of a cliff and he has no way to get up. Simon is stuck in a seat he
made in the snow. If he moves they will both get pulled down the crevasse. He falls out of the seat
and has to cut the rope.
Chapter 7 Joe lands on a ledge in a crevasse. He lies on the edge of the ledge expecting Simon to
fall and pull him of into the crevasse. Simon never falls down so he pulls down the rope and
realises that it has been cut.
Chapter 8
Simon gets down the mountain and onto the glacier. He finds the lake and gets back to the base
camp. He tells Richard, who helped carry the gear up, that Joe is dead.
Chapter 9 Joe crawls across the crevasse to find a way out. He finds a large snow slope and makes
stairs to climb out of. At the top of the slope he finds an opening out to to the
