As of 2015, 2.7% of adults in the United States were under correctional control, the lowest rate
since 1994, however that is still roughly 6.7 million adults (Kaeble Glaze, 2016). While the
correctional population has declined, correctional facilities in the United States are still grossly
overcrowded, with many facilities at or surpassing capacity. A report in 2010 by the California
Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation showed that on average, facilities were at 175%
capacity (Brown, 2010). However, as of midnight on October 31st, 2017 the California Department
of Corrections and Rehabilitation reported that their facilities, on average, were 132% occupied
(Brown, 2017). Not only is prison overcrowding a burden on the facilities themselves, but also on
the inmates. Prison overcrowding, that is, housing more inmates than the facility can humanely
facilitate (Haney, 2006), places a strain on all resources throughout the correctional facility,
including on the healthcare that s offered, educational programs, and most dramatically on the
physical space available to house inmates (Ekland Olson, 1983).

Wheeling Symphony Orchestra
I recently attended the opening night of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra at the Capitol Theatre
in downtown Wheeling. The experience of seeing a live orchestra for the first time was very
unique and pleasant to me. The feel and atmosphere was much different from what you would
experience at a country or hip hop concert. The venue was very quiet and respectful, no one was
talking or playing around on their cell phones. Whereas my prior concert experiences had consisted
of musicians aiming to be as loud and energetic as possible to invoke excitement in the audience,

knowledge of the subject matter, like many historians must do when there is a lack of primary
documents. The usage of maps, as on pages 16 and 96, helps with the visualization aspect. For
weaknesses, because it is an already thin book, I thought that the author spent a lot of time
repeating herself. We also get a lot of quotes from letters back and forth, but it would have been
nice for something more than that. McIlvenna also overstates the case that most of the people in
the Albemarle area were trying to set up a democratic, egalitarian world. Just because they wanted
to be free from the sheriffs, tax collectors, etc., does not mean that they were after some idealistic

I.Thesis Restatement: Down syndrome is the most common genetic disorder in the United States
and it accounts for much of the learning disabilities found in children today. Every person with
down syndrome can display different characteristics, including physical, intellectual, and emotional
characteristics. There is no cure for down syndrome but its symptoms are treatable and much can
be done to improve the lives of those with the disorder.
II.Review: There are three forms of Down syndrome, with three different variations of having an

Prior to the Victorian era, men in England maintained cleanly shaven faces. With the mid
eighteen hundreds came a widespread shift toward facial hair in a multitude of styles
(Camellia). The ability to grow whiskers began to be regarded as a sign of manhood. In pictures
and photographs from the era, it is rare to find a male, past the age of manhood, depicted without
facial hair in some capacity. As the century continued, the preferred style of facial hair grew
progressively longer, bushier, and more pronounced (Nunn), but it remained stylish for men to wear
facial hair of all sizes and descriptions (Camellia).

bushy mutton chops to carefully waxed mustaches, defined the appearance of mid to late nineteenth
century men in England, and created a divide between boyhood and manhood.

The Potential Majors Of The Belk Scholar s Program
Course Overview I found this course to be highly valuable in its efforts to provide insight on the
potential majors of the Belk Scholar s program. While there remain many questions about the
future path of the program, it did help to solidify both my understanding of the major options
and my personal decision. I am more confident now that the M.S. in Economics is the option I
will pursue. Throughout the course, with every new topic, I always found myself asking the
economic questions of each issue. Furthermore, I continue to find the subject matter to be
fascinating. Equally as beneficial as knowing which path I am leaning towards was learning
more about the other options. Prior to the class, I had an incomplete idea of what Mathematical
Finance is. As most people believe, I had taken it to be a field dedicated primarily to money and
how it is used. I now understand that this misconception ignores the core of the field; which is
risk. Our readings from Against the Gods were beneficial in building a foundation for the field
of Mathematical Finance. As was pointed out during class, the book was very dense, but it did
an excellent job in delivering complete information. I read some additional chapters on my own
and would have liked to have additional time during class to discuss other parts of the book. The
last of the degree options to discuss is the Data Science path. While we did not dedicate a portion of
the class solely to the data science field as we did with
