How do you get a job in data science? Knowing enough statistics, machine learning, programming, etc to be able to get a job is difficult. One thing I have found lately is quite a few people may have the required skills to get a job, but no portfolio. While a resume matters, having a portfolio of public evidence of your data science skills can do wonders for your job prospects. Even if you have a referral, the ability to show potential employers what you can do instead of just telling them you can do something is important. We all know the feeling. The creeping sense of doom that our project is falling apart. The growing horror as we watch it unravel despite all our best laid plans. The moment of terror when we realize it’s well and truly dead.
All of us—whether we make launch plans or business plans, product plans or go-to-market-plans—have at least one skeleton in our closet. And it was most likely put there by one of these plan killers: poor alignment with corporate strategy, bad metrics or lack of understanding of the market.
Fortunately, this issue of Pragmatic Marketer provides practical tools and tips for addressing all three.
First, Bill Thomson walks us through creating a strategic product plan. Robert Boyd and our own Jon Gatrell talk about key metrics—how to measure everything from overall organizational strength to individual sprints. And finally, weaving it all together, is a real-life look at how Hubspot ensures its product launch plans succeed.
There are bone-yards full of good ideas that collapse during planning and execution. In this issue we help ensure your project isn’t one of them.
Happy reading,

Creative + Development - Designer vs Developer: Aligning Forces for GoodForum One
This webinar focuses on how the synergy between creative design and development works, why it is paramount to the ultimate success of a website, and provide you with a few fundamental steps to implement as you get started.
This is the scene: you’ve launched a beautiful new site that is modern, fresh, and amazing... and no one knows how to use it. Your customers are calling (often!) because they can’t find the information on the website. They’re frustrated, mad even. You’ve already poured money and time into designing and building a beautiful site, but you left out one crucial aspect: User Experience (UX) design.
Designing a solution without considering the user experience can be disastrous. That’s why high-performing companies and organizations always ensure that creative design and UX are working in concert, ensuring that your audiences have delightful experiences all around.
During our webinar we’ll discuss:
- the differences and overlaps between Creative and UX
- how both rely on a clearly-defined brand experience
- how to collaborate effectively to find solutions that get results
We’ll talk about how beauty and usability can be best friends. By the end you’ll have some clear next steps to take back to your team and begin designing for user journeys that are both beautiful and usable.

Drupal & Design / 10 Thing I Hate About YouForum One
If you are using a CMS, you are using it to save time by having it do much of the heavy lifting for you. Drupal is a very powerful and complex CMS and can easily accomplish things that would be much harder within a simpler CMS (e.g., WordPress). However, one drawback to that is the more complex the CMS, the more assumptions it makes about how content is organized and displayed. In this sessions, we will try to illuminate some of the constraints you'll need to work with when designing on Drupal.
Presented March 2, 2015 / NTEN Nonprofit Technology Conference 2015 in Austin.
Data For Policy Influence: How to Manage, Distribute, and Present Your DataForum One
To make smart policy decisions on important issues – whether global, national or local – leaders and influencers need information, analysis, and insight.
If your organization is in the business of supplying that information, then you already know that Data is an essential ingredient for success. You also know that in this digital age your briefs and reports – the traditional distribution tools for your insights – are competing for attention in an extremely competitive and noisy online marketplace of ideas. Attention is scarce, and gaining attention with 20-page PDFs online is not very easy.
So how can you put your data to better use digitally to extend your influence?
In this presentation, Laura Castillo-Page of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) and Kurt Voelker of Forum One dig into real-world examples from the AAMC and others about the first steps that organizations like yours can take to better present their data.
IN THIS PRESENTATION YOU WILL LEARN how NGO’s can evolve their use of data to be more digitally native by:
• Presenting data as engaging interactive visualizations
• Distributing data in more accessible formats
• Managing data more effectively on the backend

Wireless communication involves the transmission of information over a distance without the help of wires, cables or any other forms of electrical conductors.
Wireless communication is a broad term that incorporates all procedures and forms of connecting and communicating between two or more devices using a wireless signal through wireless communication technologies and devices.
Features of Wireless Communication
The evolution of wireless technology has brought many advancements with its effective features.
The transmitted distance can be anywhere between a few meters (for example, a television's remote control) and thousands of kilometers (for example, radio communication).
Wireless communication can be used for cellular telephony, wireless access to the internet, wireless home networking, and so on.

9. ● This is still debated, since
everything is changing, always
● You may be working on mobile &
web development, analytics & data,
content creation, social media
● You need to understand the
technology, the design process, the
gov environment, the user, the
stakeholder, the business goals
and the delivery process
9
So What’s Your Role?
YOU ARE THE SWISS ARMY
10. 10
Be realistic.
Tactics for Success
Communicate early and often.Prefer action.
Stay positive.
Put yourself in their shoes, but
always advocate for the user.
Listen and learn.
11. Find a group to talk over
program. Have a meet up with
those in a similar role.
11
Dealing with Stress
Talk about it Have an escalation plan
Pathways for escalation can
allow you to change the context
of the conversation.
Work on something else
Switch your focus. Make
progress on something else if
you find yourself stalled.
Put things in context
Nobody is on the operating
table.
12. 12
How Do We Do It?
Managing the Agile Process
12
13. At Its Core, Agile Is:
Rapid & steady value delivery
(Mitigate risk of doing the wrong
thing)
Small batches (Reduce
complexity & impact of change)
More teamwork
New skills built over time
13
15. Increased communications between development
team and internal stakeholders.
Goals re-set at the beginning of each sprint and
progress can be tracked via the project “burndown”,
which (hopefully) leads to fewer surprises.
Time is tracked by all parties, so in time, we should
develop a good idea of the team’s velocity across sprint,
keeping expectations realistic.
^Attention CORs, this also has accounting benefits.15
Pros
16. The core team is empowered by having a say on what is
in the Sprint Backlog and is encouraged to push back on
deadlines (Joint accountability––remember, not
everything is on you).
A planned approach forces you to finish dependencies in
previous sprints.
The process can be used to push back against or
accommodate phantom stakeholders.
16
Pros
17. Product Owner and stakeholders need training and they
have to be engaged in the process.
Additional diligence must be done by the PO to make
sure that each Story/Task is impeccably defined
(acceptance criteria!) and that there is a joint definition
of “done”.
Hotfixes can be disruptive.
Not really suited to firm-fixed scope and/or price17
Cons
18. Team morale can be more tumultuous (on all sides).
Time tracking can lead to a “do it quick, not right”
attitude, creating technical debt.
Pressure can be put on creative decisions, which are
harder to time-box.
18
Cons
20. 20
- Us, always
“ A little risk management saves a lot of fan cleaning”
21. Are expectations clear to
everyone?
This includes you and your
team as much as the client,
user, and stakeholders. And
who’s doing what?
The Three Big Questions
Are you staying flexible?
The process works until it
doesn’t. If the project is in
trouble, don’t just keep
checking boxes.
How well are you communicating?
Don’t just phone it in. You
need to be checking in with
your team as much as with the
client, and talk things out
