The hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) originates in the medulla oblongata and exits the skull through the hypoglossal canal. It innervates all the muscles of the tongue except for the palatoglossus, which is innervated by the vagus nerve. The hypoglossal nerve is responsible for motor control of the tongue muscles to enable all tongue movements. It also transmits some fibers from the C1/C2 spinal nerves to innervate muscles of the neck and hyoid bone.
