#TCI2019 Break - out sessions: The Vanguard Initiative
The Vanguard Initiative is a methodology for increasing cluster collaboration across 35 European regions through interregional cooperation projects. It involves companies and knowledge institutes demonstrating new industrial technologies through pilot projects. The goals are to develop new industrial value chains, stimulate business and tackle non-technological topics. Some example pilot projects develop 3D printed hybrid components, de-manufacturing for circular economy, and reducing weight. The methodology has been adopted by the European Commission and involves over 180 regions. The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) provide grants for researchers in all stages of their careers – be they doctoral candidates or highly experienced researchers – and encourage transnational, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary mobility. It enables research-focused organisations (universities, research centres, and businesses) to host talented foreign researchers and to create strategic partnerships with leading institutions worldwide.
With this study, PPMI in partnership with the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and Optimity Advisors assessed the impacts of business participation and entrepreneurship on the results of the research fellowships funded by the programme.
The study relied on the evidence gathered and analysed using qualitative and quantitative methods, including desk research, statistical analysis of the monitoring data, a large-scale case study programme (50 case studies of the MSCA projects involving businesses and cross-case analysis), more than 300 interviews with various types of interviewees (EU and national-level stakeholders, business participants in the MSCA and representatives of unsuccessful business applicants), as well as surveys of the MSCA fellows and participating organisations.

Virtual worlds can provide new opportunities for small and medium enterprises in Europe to collaborate and innovate in a cost effective manner. A business case study of a Swedish startup called RunAlong found that virtual worlds enabled knowledge sharing between dispersed users in different European countries about local markets and supported ideation. While virtual worlds have potential, user inexperience with the technology could impact participation. For European SMEs, virtual worlds may improve access to market knowledge across borders, offer a new approach for user-driven innovation and product development, and provide an affordable way for different SMEs in various countries to work together.

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) provide grants for researchers in all stages of their careers – be they doctoral candidates or highly experienced researchers – and encourage transnational, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary mobility. It enables research-focused organisations (universities, research centres, and businesses) to host talented foreign researchers and to create strategic partnerships with leading institutions worldwide.
With this study, PPMI in partnership with the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and Optimity Advisors assessed the impacts of business participation and entrepreneurship on the results of the research fellowships funded by the programme.
The study relied on the evidence gathered and analysed using qualitative and quantitative methods, including desk research, statistical analysis of the monitoring data, a large-scale case study programme (50 case studies of the MSCA projects involving businesses and cross-case analysis), more than 300 interviews with various types of interviewees (EU and national-level stakeholders, business participants in the MSCA and representatives of unsuccessful business applicants), as well as surveys of the MSCA fellows and participating organisations.

This scalable process could enable Talga to become the world's largest supplier of these materials. Talga is focusing on applying its graphene products to improve performance in sectors like energy storage, coatings, composites, and construction materials.

Bridging the innovation gap • The Union's intellectual and scientific potential does not always translate into new products and services that can be sold on markets. • The main reasons for this commercialisation gap are: difficulties in accessing finance, market barriers and excessive red tape. • The grouping of research institutes and industry ("clusters") can provide the ground for fruitful interaction between them and for the emergence of new products, services and industries.

Better coordinated use of tools to support research and innovation • Europe needs a better-coordinated use of tools such as grants, pre-commercial public procurement and venture capital, • Europe needs an integrated approach from research and innovation to market deployment. • Special attention should be paid to the role of the public sector in enabling systemic innovations • Open access to publicly funded research results and knowledge transfer as part of innovation strategies at national and European levels.
