The human heart is located slightly left of center in the chest and is about the size of a fist. It has four chambers - two upper auricles that receive blood and two lower ventricles that pump blood out. The right side receives deoxygenated blood and pumps it to the lungs while the left side receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it out to the body via the aorta, the largest artery. There are two types of valves in the heart - atrioventricular valves that prevent backflow between chambers and semilunar valves that prevent backflow in the ventricles. The heart is a muscular pump that circulates blood through the body using these chambers and valves.
