Letter To Walden
Dear Henry David Thoreau, You may be dead now, but you left a huge impact on the world and on the
lives of high school and college students reading your essay Walden, for school. You spent two years
at Walden Pond. Why you spent exactly that much time, why you got away from society, why you
lived in a small house, will be cryptic to us. You say that this lifestyle was to avoid materialism and
find yourself in nature to achieve transcendence. And, this was true in your large essay, for the most
part. I began to learn from your writings (Walden, Civil disobedience), however confusing and
metaphorical they are. I respect you and what you have taught society. But, you always contradict
yourself. Also, I want to tell you know that in your essay of Walden you said that As you simplify live
your life, the laws of the universe will be simple; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be
poverty, nor weakness will be weakness. I agree with you but considering that in the light of these
modern days it is almost impossible to keep up with simplicity even though I know that to keep up
with simplicity is a good thing. like I said, it is almost impossible for our generation to live without
technology, without light, and without any facilities because in today s modern world technology is
one of the most important parts of each of the individual lives. Technology is like our soul, and we

To me, civil disobedience is not following the rules or going against the rules especially if a rule you
think is wrong or unjust and a good example of protest that happened recently is the protest outside of

civil disobedience is disobedience to the

Jimmy Valentine Identity
Have you ever thought of starting a new life? A new identity, no one could judge you based on your
past. This is what Jimmy Valentine attempted to do when he took on the identity of Ralph D. Spencer.
Jimmy had a questionable past, and knew he wouldn t have anyone s respect given his reputation. He
was out of jail and the window was wide open for him to start completely over. Jimmy Valentine was
dedicated to living a moral life because he got a new job, he tried to detach himself from his past, and
his actions towards others changed. The first step of becoming Ralph Spencer was a new job. This
meant kicking the old habits that came with this previous job. He hadn t done anything illegal in a
year. His most well known crime was cracking safes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Multiple times throughout the story it was mentioned that jimmy carried his briefcase everywhere. His
briefcase contained an expensive set of tools that he used for cracking safes. He may of keeped his
tools for because he still used them, bet he could have well carried them because he was afraid of
them being stolen and him losing the money spent in them or so his future wife wouldn t accidentally
open it and find out something she wasn t supposed to know. Not only did he carry his briefcase every
where, but he remembered how to do everything. He opened up the safe quickly with no problem at
all. If anything, this ended up benefiting everyone. Who knows what could ve happened had Jimmy
not been able to open the safe. He will also carry his gigantic criminal record with him forever. It s
true that you can t erase something off your permanent record. What you can do is try to change your
image and not get in trouble anymore. While some may attempt to make the argument that Jimmy did
not attempt to live a moral life, it is clear that this is not true for many reasons. Jimmy Valentine lived
a moral life by getting a new job, he separated himself from his past, and he got a better attitude.
Jimmy Valentine had a successful attempt to create a new life. It takes a lot of dedication to start
completely over, and Jimmy had what it

Analysis Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde By Robert Lewis Stevenson
As the cities in the nineteenth century grew and expanded, more and more people moved from the
countryside to said cities. With an increase in the size and population of the city a individual s
anonymity increased as well. Both the Paris Morgue and the novella Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde written
by Robert Lewis Stevenson portray the anonymity of modern city life. While middle class men often
appreciated the anonymity of the city, because it allowed them to escape social class restrictions, they
also feared some of the negative implications. The working class, on the other hand, might have
enjoyed the new found entertainment options, however they also had to fear being victims of crime
and ending as nameless corpses. Women, both from the middle class and working class, experienced
more freedom through the entertainment and leisure time options available due to the anonymous
character of the city. For the middle class man the anonymity of the city promised freedom from social
restrictions, that hindered him from behaving in ways that were unseeming for a man of his standing.
In his novella Stevenson writes about a wealthy middle class doctor, Dr. Henry Jekyll, who through a
potion, could turn himself into a different person. This second personality of his being called Edward
Hyde. Mr. Hyde represents the more sinister and evil part of Jekyll s personality, which had been split
after he first took his potion. Before making his potion Jekyll often had desires that were not

How Did The Iroquois Confederacy Influence Feminism
The Iroquois Confederacy and its Influence on Feminism
Today, the feminist movement is a worldwide force, calling for rights and equality for women. It s
come a long way from its shaky beginnings, especially for American women. Many know to thank the
strong pioneers of feminism for bringing women so far leaders like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B.
Anthony, and Matilda Joslyn Gage. However, not many are aware of where they began, and how their
ideas about the way women must be treated in a proper society were shaped. Though they are not
often acknowledged, the women of the Iroquois confederacy had a major impact on the birth of
American feminism (Oneida Indian Nation 2009). In a time where European American women were
supposed to be pious, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike the Europeans, these women kept all the land they owned, as well as their property, and their

through the Indian women that the problem of their civilization must be answered; the ... lands should
be in the hands of the women (Gage 1893). The division of power between the Iroquois men and
women was almost equal, with a natural balance and checking system (Lang 1998). This was
imperative to the early 1800s feminists, who were stunned at how smoothly society ran with women in
a position of power (Ibid.). Agriculture, dominated by the women, bloomed under a woman s touch,

Slide 3: A Z score informs us if a variable s score or value is equal, below, or above the mean. It also
determines the exact proportion or percentage of scores that fall between any two scores of normally
distributed scores. This sounds similar to the standard deviation; however, standard deviations are set
values that fall on a distribution; whereas, Z scores or values may lie anywhere on the normally
distributed curve. Hold that thought and I will go into greater detail as we progress.
Slide 4. The following is a good guideline to understand Z scores and their relationship to standard
deviations.
Slide 5: Let s look at a normal curve, using Z scores. On the left, we see a distribution title Positive Z.
Look at the highlighted area, B, which represents the percentage of scores or values between the mean
and a particular Z score above the mean. This Z score represents a positive Z score as it is to the right
of the mean. Notice that the area to the left of the mean equals 50% of the scores or values of a
variable. Remember we have symmetry of the curve on both sides or 50% of scores or values on both
sides.
On the right, we see a normal curve with a highlighted area, B, which represents the percentage of
scores or values between the mean and a particular Z score below the mean. This represents a negative
Z score.

The Scottish national party is a Scottish political party who was founded in 1934. Even though the

Scotland got inspired by the Scandinavian countries, which only consists of five million habitants, but
still are one of the world s most successful countries, especially Norway with made a fortune on their
north sea industry. Scotland s dream wasn t realistic, though. The union ended up splitting the money,
and Scotland started to dislike being in union with England even more when they have an open chance
to succeed if they were on their own. The fact that Margaret Thatcher wasted a lot of the North Sea oil
revenues on paying for tax cuts and unemployment benefits when it could have been used to rebuild
industry or national infrastructure, didn t help on the Scott s anger. In 1979, The Scots become asked
whether they wanted a Scottish parliament or not, 52% of voters said they did but the number was too
low to accept it. Years went by, the and in 1997, over 74% of Scots voted for a parliament, which

grip, because even though they have their own parliament, they don t have the right to say much.

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Over The Hedge
The author of Animating Revolt and Revolting Animation, Judith Halberstam, uses rhetorical
strategies to speak to her point that animated movies can be used to reach a wide ranging audience to
convey deep underlying messages in a way that is entertaining for all. The author points out how Pixar
movies brings non traditional characters to life and faces them against real life struggles but does so in
a happy ending manor that captivates audiences. This is accomplished by the author introducing a plot
line from a Pixar movie that illustrates a struggle or classic battle and then describes the characters
that are in the struggle and how they live through it. The author then describes an actual real life
struggle and relates it back to the animated movie. Judith Halberstam points out that the movie
Chicken Run illustrates how aggressive industrial businesses maximize profits above anything else or
businesses that have a partnership between owners and workers to maximize profits. What are we to

Analysis Of The Movie Monty Python And The Holy Grail
In class, we watched the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail . This movie is set in the time of the
middle ages (roughly 476 1453). It follows King Arthur and his knights as they search for the Holy
Grail. They look for the Holy Grail after they are told to by God. The movie at first may seem like
nonsense and a silly parody, but in reality, Monty Python and the Holy Grail demonstrates the truth of
the Middle Ages, feudal hierarchy, and other topics we have discussed in class.
In the Middle Ages, the Church was one of the most powerful forces. It was a very important part of
the people s culture and was a unifying force for them. It gave people a common belief, protection and
a sense of safety in a time of war. Many people relied on it to receive sacraments and go to heaven,
especially peasants because that was about all they had going for them. The Church and it s matters
were taken seriously and they maintained power throughout the Middle Ages. In the movie, the power
of the church is shown in many scenes. For example, in the scene where King Arthur and his knights
are trying to get into the cave but the rabbit is stopping them, they call in the priests to give them the
Holy Hand Grenade . The priests take it very seriously and tell Arthur very specific instructions for it.
He activates it and blows up the rabbit they are able to enter the cave. This shows that they believed
that the church and God had the most power and the power to do anything. In a time of need, they
turned to the Church.
The feudal system was the method of government that was used in the Middle Ages. The feudal
pyramid consisted of four levels, King at the top, Church Official and Nobles/Lords next, then
Knights, and peasants at the bottom. The King had the most power, the nobles were sometimes vassals
to the king, knights fought in the king s army, and peasants worked in the field all day and were very
poor. In one scene of the movie, peasants are seen working in the fields. They are very dirty and have
bad quality clothing which shows how little money and power they had compared to King Arthur, who
had fancy clothing and did not have to work. King Arthur then asks the peasants who their lord is,
which shows how lords or vassals

Zodiac Essay
The Monster Within In Zodiac written by Robert Graysmith he says, Just because you can not prove it
does not mean it is not true. This was completely accurate and was disheartening for David Toschi, the
primary detective on the case because he could not uncover concrete evidence to convict Arthur Leigh
Lee Allen. Lee was the number one suspect in the investigation and all signs pointed to him being the
Zodiac, which was the main similarity between the publication and motion picture. In addition, the
text contained two prime suspects but the feature film only fixated on one. Graysmith later went to

being Zodiac. They focused mainly on Lee being the main suspect considering all signs pointed to him
even though law enforcement officers did not have sufficient evidence to validate it. Zodiac allegedly
murdered 37 civilians although only seven were substantiated to be Zodiac with two survivors: Mike

Many seem to think that Born in the U.S.A. is an extremely patriotic song in which Springsteen is
almost proclaiming how proud he is to be an American but this is far from reality. The song actually
deals with the Vietnam War and the suffering that occurs when veterans come back home. One of
Springsteen s verse makes this scene quite a real one for us as listeners, Come back home to the
refinery/ Hiring man said son if it was up to me/ Went down to see my V.A. man/ He said son, don t
you understand (Springsteen). This particular verse deals with the struggle that many veterans had
when they came back home and began looking for jobs.
Vietnam was unlike any other war America had been a part of before. First and foremost, most people
consider the war a loss for America. The main objective of the war was to stop the spread of
Communism to South Vietnam. American troops were able to accomplish this task but as soon as they
were pulled out and sent home, the North invaded the South and took over. In the end Communism
had spread to South Vietnam. Returning troops are generally welcomed home like the heros that they
are. Take World War 2 for example, the troops coming home for combat were welcomed with parades
all across the country, but not after Vietnam (COL. Jack Jacobs, U.S. ARMY (RET.))
Prior to the end of America s involvement in Vietnam, the country was divided. Large amounts of
demonstrations called for an end to the

All Art, Including Music, Is Directly Influenced By The
All art, including music, is directly influenced by the environment in which the artist lives. It is
impossible to create art in a vacuum, unaffected by the society and events surrounding you. The time
period, location, and social changes and innovations can have a direct effect on the art produced.
Political events, especially wars, can have a strong influence on the music and art produced at that
time. For example, music may become more patriotic during a time of war as the composers strive to
publicize their national pride. I will explore this idea through the composer Igor Stravinsky and his
three most famous ballets in terms of music and choreography. Since I have a retrospective
perspective, I will be able to analyze the situation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His wide range of locations creates an expansive social and political influence on his works and their
choreography. Similar to many famous composers, Stravinsky did not study music from the time he
was a small child, but studied law and philosophy at St Petersburg University (Taruskin, White).
Throughout the course of his life, Stravinsky composed almost 100 works, ranging in genres. He
began to be commissioned by the Ballet Russes in 1909 and by the following year was asked by Serge
Diaghilev to produce The Firebird (Taruskin, White). The Ballet Russes was a Paris ballet company
run by Serge Diaghilev that was known for its creative and inventive performances. Many people did
not like the Ballet Russes innovative style and chose to watch classic ballet companies instead in order
to continue the classical style that many believed ballet should express. However, Diaghilev was
determined to do something unique with his ballet company and they made their performances
extremely modern (Lockspeiser). The Firebird was the work that set Stravinsky s career on fire, and
allowed his name to become spoken with respect and fame. It premiered at the Paris Opera on June
25, 1910. It may have been fate that this commission was offered to Stravinsky because it is said that
the Ballet Russes originally commissioned another composer for this piece, but that his slow progress

The Liberty Bell is an iconic artifact in the history of American Independence and is one of the most
influential symbols of slavery during the anti slavery movement long ago in America. The Liberty
Bell has significant semblance and symbolic meaning to the independence of America. The
significance follows down the history lanes to the seventeenth century (1752), when the Bell was used
to summon the legislative sessions and alert Americans of the impending public meetings and
proclamations (Callahan pg. 78). Before the Liberty Bell got its name, it was originally called the

Roe Vs Rhode Abortion
Forty five years ago, the Supreme Court of the United States infamously declared in the case Roe v.
Wade that abortion was a women s right for the entirety of the pregnancy. 1 This case also limited the
states ability to regulate abortions performed in the three trimesters of pregnancy. Since this decision,
over 60 million unborn children have been killed by abortion.2 By contrast, 1.1 million soldiers have
died in all the U.S. wars combined.3 In a country founded upon the principles of life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness, abortion is one of the greatest downfalls of those principles. It must be

Youth Sports Help Children Develop Values, And Teach Children
I can accept failure; everyone fails at something. But I cannot accept not trying. Michael Jordan. As
said by Michael Jordan, everyone fails at something. No matter how good you are, you will not
always succeed. Youth sports help children develop values, and teach children resilience. Not only do
they teach children values, but they teach children why it is important to be physically active. Youth
sports teach children how to transfer values into the classroom and become a better student. However,
there should be guidelines in place to support youth development and increase a positive experience.
Finally, we need to make sure our athletes are being coached properly, and effectively. We need to
ensure that our youth are being coached by coaches who provide a positive experience for them,
engage parents, and to emphasize future success in and out of sport.
Youth sports are important for a variety of reason. They provide students with physical, psychological,
academic, and social benefits. Some psychological benefits of sport include gaining self esteem from
intrinsic motivation, developing social skills, leadership skills, and teamwork. Another important
psychological benefit includes avenues for young people to take initiative, meaning that they can
commit energy to a goal over time. This can transfer over many areas including school, work, and
sport. There are also academic benefits. These benefits include but are not limited to ties with physical

Both of the short stories The Answer is No by Naguib Mahfouz , and Eveline by James Joyce are
basically about the decline of the marriage proposals by the women. These stories took place in the

The man who makes the young girl a hostage, and raped her is named Badran Badrawi , and he says

gets married. And surprisingly that person comes back to her when the girl reaches the marriage age.
This means that this person is a man of his words, but the real question is that why did he come back?
One of the reasons he comes back can be, because she was a very young and beautiful girl, and was
from a rich family. In my opinion, he came back not because what he had done to her was wrong but
because her family s background was rich, he came with this conscience. And when he proposes her, a

of awareness and lack of prevention. To a non athlete, this injury might not sound life altering, but
when an athlete hears that they have torn their ACL, they know that there will be a hard journey in
front of them. Until an athlete endures the hardships of recovering from this injury, they do not

There are also the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and the Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL).
These two ligaments coexist in the center of the knee and balance out the weakness of the other; the
ACL prevents the shin bone from sliding out in front of the thigh bone while the PCL prevents the
shin bone from sliding backwards under the femur (Vorvick). Despite how the ACL and the PCL work
together, the ACL is one of the most well known major injuries in sports.
In her article, High School ACL Injury Rates , Dawn Comstock shows that in 2009, about sixty
percent, of all sports surgeries involve the knee; within the sixty percent, about fifty percent of the
knee surgeries are ACL reconstructions. Sports that could have a higher tendency for an athlete to tear
the ACL are sports that require an athlete to decelerate quickly or need to cut and change direction

when compared to a low impact sport, such as football and women s soccer; football has a forty one
percent ACL injury rate while women s soccer only has nineteen percent. Not only does the level of
impact effect the likelihood of ACL injury, but the gender of the athlete as well. When looking at
women s and men s soccer, men have a merely thirteen percent ACL injury rate because their physical

found, no one has heard from her all day. My dad made me come home right away. When I got home
he ran over to me and wrapped his soft arms around me and held me so very closely. That life

that he hasn t been by my side. Not only is he always there for me he is also a very reliable person. In
our town of Manton, my dad has been a very flexible, helping, and a very patient community member.
Along with that, he has been a great role model for me. My father has been the host of the Bluegrass
Festival, Harvest Festival, and many more Community gatherings. He volunteers his own personal
time to help others that are in need. An example of this is his career. His career of being a pharmacist
changed from employee to boss very quickly. He helps others when they are in need of medicine or
have medical concerns during out of business hours. He makes time to deliver from five to ten pm on
his own time. When I watch him do all this community service, volunteer, and put others first, it
makes me do the same. That is why he is a very loving flexible, helping, patient, role model. For not
only me, but including with the rest of the citizens of Manton. When someone makes mistakes usually
there is a lot of disappointment. Perhaps you do something you re not supposed to, or you let your
sassiness out, or maybe you fail a test because you didn t study. Those

Literary Analysis Of The Poem Morte DArthur
At first the poem Morte d Arthur, or the The Epic. The speaker says he is going to or is at the home of
Francis Allen on Christmas Eve. Also there are the people and Holmes; the poet, Everard Hall; as the
host. They gather around the wassail bowl (hot mulled cider) and discuss how the honor seems gone
from Christmas. The speaker is tired from his day of ice skating and falling, and he dozes off, waking
to the parson lamenting the general lack of faith throughout the world. Francis jokes and says he holds
faith in Everard, and Everard responds by saying he has faith in the cider. The speaker asks Everard
what became of his great gift of poetry that was so evident in college, and Francis says that Everard
had been working on twelve books about King Arthur but threw them into the fire. It seems that
Everard thought nothing new was said and the books were mere Homeric echoes, nothing worth.
Francis says he has saved one book from the fire. The speaker s ears prick up, and he remembers the
talent of his friend. After some urging, the poet begins to read. The noise of battle goes on all day. All
of the men of the Round Table have fallen in Lyonesse. King Arthur has also been wounded, and his
last knight, Sir Bedivere, brings him to a chapel near the field in the barren land. The King speaks to
Bedivere about the severing of the company of knights, the men he loved, and how they will never
talk again of lordly deeds in Camelot. He tells Bedivere to take his sword

What Is The Differences Between D Artagnan And M. Bonacieux
D artagnan the central character of the novel is a young ambitious man whose dream is to become a
musketeer like his dad. He is about 21 years old and is from Gascony. He is brave , noble ambitious,
crafty, and intelligent. He is driven by love and ruled by chivalry but occassionally prone to amoral
behavior due to his pride. Monseur Bonacieux who is D artagnans landlord and Madame Bonacieux s
husband. His wife was kidnapped and went to D artagnan for help. Even though D artagnan was a
young ambitious and brave man he has some similarities to the character Bonacieux who is about 50
years old , married and retired. Some of the similarities between D artagnan and M. Bonacieux is that
they both dont want to see a woman in trouble. In chapter 8 of the novel M.Bonacieux goes to D
artagnan for help and D artagnan agrees to help because they dont want to see a woman in trouble.
Even though they are both ambitious men , they had a soft spot for women and would never hurt a
lady. They both also are smart and crafty men who try to be clever in their dealings. M. Bonacieux
went on and asked for help from D artagnan even though he was warned in the letter not to talk to
anyone about his wife s abduction. One can say his a knuckle head just like D artagnan because he

How Did The Space Race Affect The Social And Public Side...
The NASA Space Program is one of the most, if not, the most known space program that is currently
active. One of the most successful projects was the Space Race . In this essay I will discuss what
happened on the political side, the economical side, and the social/public side of this event and race to
beat and get ahead of Russia and their launch of Sputnik 1.
On the political side of the Space Race , the Sputnik launch was a surprise to Americans. As stated in
Document A, With the launch of the Soviet satellite, Logsdon said, the reaction was more fear than
surprise, because it showed clearly that the United States was no longer safe behind it s ocean barriers.
. So with that in mind they decided to go head to head in a way with ... Show more content on

One of them was stated in Document B, One of Johnson s asides, George E. Reedy, summarized the
feelings of many Americans: the simple fact is that we can no longer consider the Russians to be

Russians with technology anymore because of the launch of the satellite. Also we shouldn t
underestimate them because later they sent the first man into space. But that isn t all with the social
portion of the race. This was stated in Document F, Under the intense media scrutiny of an America
waiting desperately for something to salve the national pride, the Vanguard rocket was prepared for
launch at Cape Canaveral. On December 6, 1957, the slender, delicate instrument was fired, began to
rise, and then sank back down on itself, crushing it s engines and erupting into a huge fireball. . This
crash was on live TV so it was being broadcasted everywhere. This was saying that this was all

Faith Is A Way Of Knowing
Faith plays a strong role in humanity, however, it is a very controversial subject when it is applied to
as a way of knowing. Faith, or undying trust, can be applied to many areas of life in our pursuit of
knowledge; whether it may be for religious purposes or having confidence in world leaders or family
members. Although it does not require physical evidence, faith is based on such strong beliefs that so
many trust it to be the truth. Unfortunately, as human beings, we may not always be correct in our way
of thinking. Questions concerning faith as a way of knowing arise when regarding morals or ethics, as
well as some have a different faith than others. Faith is a more modern approach to a way of knowing,
however, has played such a large part since the beginning of human existence.
While thinking of faith, religion is usually first to come to mind. And it is true, faith plays a large part
in religion. You must have faith that your way of life is the way you are meant to live. As previously
stated, faith does not require empirical evidence, however not having any evidence is justified in the
individual s life. In many religions, faith offers structure to its follower s lives, which helps guide
them into the right direction. In addition to this, who are we to tell an individual that their faith is not
properly justified, therefore, cannot be absolute truth? Religion and its practices have been carried out
for centuries; it helps individuals understand how and why we are

Summary Of A Winter Tale Op 9
Josef Suk was a Czech composer and violinist. In 1894, Suk composed a piece of his works called A
Winter s Tale Op. 9, which was based on Shakespeare. In the beginning years of his career, he was
influenced by Antonin Dvorak, who was Suk s professor at a music academy called Prague
Conservatory. In 1898, Josef Suk ended up marrying Otilie Dvorak, who was the daughter of Antonin
Dvorak. Within the happy life they lived together, Otilie was impressed with her father s and husband
s works of music and she loved to play the piano, but sadly died at a young age. After the death of
Otilie, Suk went back to revise A Winter s Tale, which was later released to the public in May of 1999.
A Winter s Tale Op. 9, based on Shakespeare was written in 1894. This falls into the genre romance
and it has a dramatic structure. The storyline is about two lovers and how the music variations
symbolize their battles with being together. The overture starts with a slow introduction to the piece of
work. A clarinet is heard against a descending figure for muted violins. It reflects to the storyline,
which starts with an act of jealousy, due to the King of Sicilia suspecting that his wife is cheating on
him with one of his friends. The King of Sicilia s daughter was abandoned by her father s orders and
brought in a country village. Eventually, the intensity of the music grows by the movement of an
Allegro, meaning it moves in a direction at a brisk tempo. As the music piece moves in an Allegro

The Narrative Techniques Used by Hitchcock in Rear Window...
The Narrative Techniques Used by Hitchcock in Rear Window
L.B. Jeffries is a high class magazine photographer for what seems to be a worldwide publication. In
Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window , he is a temporarily wheelchair bound man and his voyeuristic side
appears later on in the film.
Rear Window depicts a 20th century New York in which fraudsters, murderers and salesmen all live
alongside each other. The story describes a man who broke his leg during a photography assignment.
He is, for the time being, stuck in a wheelchair with nothing to do but look at the neighbours through
his Rear Window . He hasn t seen the light of day since seven weeks ago.
Rear Window is one of Alfred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This also shows that it is the start of the story. The window fills the whole frame of the shot. This is a
good way of setting the scene for the viewers. Old style joyous jazz music is played at the start a good
way of portraying happy times. The opening scene in Rear Window has no dialogue, leaving even
more of the viewers in a pool of anticipation. The scene highlights the fact that every single thing in
the film will be seen through that particular window.
Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window is a great example of first rate camerawork. The camera is used as
the narrator and probably plays the biggest role within the film. At the start of the film, the camera is
used to pan around every single apartment within the inner city New York apartment block to
introduce the characters. Although the characters do not speak, they still play a major role in the film.
Alfred Hitchcock puts the viewers in the position of L.B Jeffries, making us all voyeurs. The camera is
used to tell the story, as there is very little dialogue in the film. Throughout nearly all of the film, only
one shot is used to tell the story, there are very few cuts. By doing it this way, Hitchcock is showing us
exactly what the character is seeing.
The cast of Rear Window includes Jimmy Stewart, the lovely Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter, and

Operant Conditioning And Continuous Reinforcement
1. Mr. Higginbotham uses the idea of operant conditioning and continuous reinforcement throughout
his classroom. Operant conditioning is the behavior in which voluntary behavior are strengthened or
weakened by consequences, while continuous reinforcement deals with giving a reinforcer after every
response. These reinforcers can be either positive or negative, strengthening or weakening the
behavior that occurred. Positive reinforcements are there to increase the opportunity of a specific
behavior reoccurring and negative reinforcement is strengthening behavior that results in a negative
action. (Woolfolk, 2014, pgs. 277 278). An example in Mr. Higginbotham s class of positive
reinforcement would be during the point in time when he decides to announce that his progress checks
can each be earned towards bonus points on their project and once ten complete progress checks have
occurred the children can also receive a homework pass. Another positive reinforcement is the three
highest scoring students will receive twenty five dollars to their class trip fund for their senior year. A
negative reinforcement is demonstrated in Mr. Higginbotham s class when Susan shows disrespectful
behavior and earns four detentions. These four detentions equal a day of indoor, in school suspension.
So even when students do not want to do their homework the progress report check will help the
students work towards that one homework pass. Both positive and negative reinforcement as

Septic Tank Friendly Toilet Paper
2 Household Items That Will Put Less Stress On A Septic Tank For homeowners that have a septic
tank, it is important that you do not overburden the tank with things that should not go through your
home s plumbing. You may not realize it, but it s even possible for certain dishwasher detergents to
have a harmful effect if you are not carful. If you want your home s septic tank to last a long time, use
these two products. Septic Tank Friendly Toilet Paper While you can be diligent about the amount of
toilet paper that you use, you cannot monitor the toilet paper usage of others in your home. If you have
people in your home that go a little overboard with their toilet paper usage, consider switching to a

You ll be paying a slight premium for the toilet paper, but it will be worth it in the end. You ll find
yourself needing to pump your septic tank less, which could offset the cost of the septic tank friendly
toilet paper. Just remember that switching toilet paper will not eliminate the need for septic tank
pumping. It will need to be done eventually. Liquid Dishwashing Detergent Dishwashing detergent
pods are becoming more popular with homeowners because of how easy they are to use. They have
the exact amount of detergent measured for your dishes, and they don t make a mess when putting
them in. Unfortunately, the plastic pods don t dissolve completely, and only turn into crumbs of
plastic. A septic tank needs all the waste to be organic in order for it to break it all down. That s why
you should avoid using the plastic pods, and stick to liquid dishwashing detergent that will go straight
down the drain without any plastic left behind. Another way to assist your septic tank when using a
dishwasher is to make sure that it is using very hot water. The detergent will break down chemically
much easier when the water is as hot as it can be. Cold water will cause the detergent to turn into solid
chunks that can get caught in the pipes going to your home s septic

Design And Functionalism Of The Industrial Revolution
The industrial revolution was the transition to industrialisation and urbanisation, which took place
from the 18th to 19th centuries. Industrialisation shifted the manufacturing of goods from small
quantities using basic machinery at home, to mass production with the mechanisation of machinery.
The task of drafting a product was no longer left with the craftsmen, thus the creation of the design
profession. (Hauffe, 1998, p.11) Mass production and series production is defined as the large quantity
manufacturing of goods, using assembly line techniques and standardised designs. Manufactured
products that contributed to a high turnover use new sales methods, including catalogs, sales
representatives and advertising. In addition, the ability to create more cost effective and accessible
products. The term form follows function is the principle that the shape of an object should be based
upon its intended purpose. Modernist design and functionalism supporters assumed two different
perspectives of the term. 1. The form of an object had only suit its function without unnecessary
details. 2. The process behind manufacturing products needs to be simple and straight forward using a
metric language, produced of high quality and long lasting These assumptions create a clear
perspective of the intent to design with the clear point of focus in terms of function, to create an object
of simplification. Artistic/aesthetic the creative exploration of ideas and design aesthetics and

Comparing The Hitchhiker s Guide To The Galaxy By Douglas...
One of the most fundamental philosophical problems to be solved is the question: what is the meaning
of life? According to Albert Camus, a French existentialist writer and philosopher, a one s urge to find
the ultimate answer for the question is rather absurd. He believed that people search for the meaning
of anything is vain because a source of meaning as such is non existent. In addition to that, Camus
literary works are often associated to the idea of absurdism and that is the thing he and Douglas
Adams have in common.
Therefore, the main focus of my essay is absurdity, as it is the main theme in the work of Douglas
Adams, The Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy. But why has Adams chosen it to be one of The
Hitchhiker s leading topics?
Of course, one can argue that there cannot be a proper sci fi novel without a certain level of absurdity
included. Douglas Adams appears to agree with the idea but at the same time he seems to believe in
everything in moderation kind of approach. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taking into account the author s intentions, after a detailed analysis I incline to the hypothesis that
Adams used the absurd as a means of expression of deeper human emotions such as anxiety,
discontent or despair. In my opinion that is the reason why he chose to include the absurd in the story
in the first place. Personally, I can understand his intentions, as it is very likely that no reader would
like a pessimistic story dealing with topics so complex and depressing, and that is why the absurd is in

The Shawl, By Cynthia Ozick
Between 1941 and 1945, over six million Jews were victims of the Holocaust, an attempt by the
German Nazis to exterminate the Jewish race. (Holocaust The Basics ). Adolf Hitler, the leader of
Germany, thought the Jews were the reason that Germany lost World War I (Jews in Nazi Germany
History Learning Site). Hitler blamed them for almost all of Germany s problems and he wanted to
exterminate the entire Jewish population. The Shawl , written by Cynthia Ozick, tells one of the many
horrifying stories from the Holocaust. The story has three main characters: the young mother Rosa,
her baby Magda, and her fourteen year old niece Stella. They were victims of the Holocaust who had
an awful experience in the Nazi concentration camps. Whenever the holocaust victims had to march to
different concentration camps, people who could not walk on their own in a line were shot on the spot,
including infants. Rosa protects Magda by hiding her in a magic shawl, but Stella selfishly takes away
the shawl, leading to Magda s death. Through the characters of Stella, Rosa, and Magda, Cynthia
Ozick shows the desperation and inhumanity that resulted when the Holocaust victims were denied of
their basic human rights. The Shawl is set late in World War II when the Allied forces were beginning
to penetrate into Germany itself. During the Holocaust, the Nazis denied the Jews basic human rights,
violating their rights to life, liberty, and property. Hitler said it was not enough for the Jews to

God Created Light, And The Nature Of Sovereignty And Control
God created light, and it was good. God created day and night, and it was good. God created the Earth
and the oceans, and they were good. Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, according
to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over all the wild animals of
the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth (Genesis 1:26). Everything that
God created was good, but some of his creations were agents of evil and others were victims. God
gave humans dominion over the plants and the animals, and that was created to be good. But, this
dominion is misunderstood as it is read in a literal sense, and not within context of the time that the
bible was written. Humans are not given dominion in the sense of sovereignty and control, but rather
humans are to respect plants and animals, they are to till it and keep it (Genesis 2:15). Pope Francis in
his encyclical Laudato Si says that tilling refers to cultivating, ploughing or working, while keeping
means caring, protecting, overseeing and preserving. This implies a relationship of mutual
responsibility between human beings and nature. Each community can take from the bounty of the
earth whatever it needs for subsistence, but it also has the duty to protect the earth and to ensure its
fruitfulness for coming generations (¶67).
God placed Adam in his garden to till and keep it for him. Humans are to do the same with the Earth.
Humans are to take care of and respect

2.Gilmore Whistleblowing In The Given Situation Lends Itself
2. Gilmore whistleblowing in the given situation lends itself to much ethical debate. For this
discussion, one should assume SCE is in violation of the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct by
recognizing revenue in the current period as detailed in the previous issue. To first consider the ethics
of Gilmore whistleblowing, it is essential to define the steps that should be taken by her before she
considers whistleblowing. For this, one can use the standard on ethical conflicts outlined in the AICPA
Code of Professional Conduct. In this instance, the conflict in question surrounds around the pressure
from internal management to do an unethical action (AICPA Code of Professional Conduct). This is
the situation which Gilmore is involved in, due ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This leads to three options Gilmore can take in the given situation. The first option is for Gilmore to
do nothing to address the issue and continue her employment with SCE. The second alternative is for
her to resign from SCE. The final route she has is whistleblowing under the assumption she exhausted
all internal options. As a spot check, the first alternative would be unethical. As stated in the final step
of evaluating ethical conflicts, one should consider leaving the relationship with the given
organization, so they are not in violation of the code. As determined in the previous issue, SCE was in
violation of the code by recognizing revenue in the current period. Therefore, Gilmore would be
associated with this violation by staying in employment with SEC. This means she would potentially
face fines or disciplinary actions from the SEC as well as the State Board of Accountancy. Solely
based on this code section, Gilmore does have a reasonable case for walking away and not
whistleblowing. However, there are other pieces of literate that needs to be addressed before coming
to this conclusion in entirety. To start, one must first address laws surrounding whistleblowing before
looking at ethic based authorities. While there is not a law that requires one to whistle blow, there are
laws that have been put in place to ensure that

determined the future of Vietnam, as bitterness and hostilities turned to bloodshed and death, whilst
enemies and allies came forth in the very first television war. Consequences such as the growth of

factors that clearly demonstrate the importance of Vietnamese victory over the French on the 2nd of

But with the effects of Napster and pressures from recording artists and other organizations being felt,
Canada had to address the issue of peer to peer transfers of electronically stored music. On December

Essay on Compare and Contrast Comedy and Tragedy
Compare and Contrast Comedy and Tragedy
In a comparison of comedy and tragedy, I will begin by looking at narrative. The narration in a
comedy often involves union and togetherness as we see in the marriage scene at the end of
Midsummer s Night Dream. William Hazlitt tells us that one can also expect incongruities,
misunderstandings, and contradictions. I am reminded of the play The Importance of Being Ernest and
the humor by way of mistaken identity. Sigmund Freud tells us to expect excess and exaggeration in
comedy. Chekhov s Marriage Proposal displays this excess both in language and in movements.
Charles Darwin insists that in a comedy circumstances must not be of a momentous nature; whereas,
Northop Frye identifies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Comic characters are often likable and sweet as Jack and Algeron in The Importance of Being Ernest.
Oliver Goldsmith characterizes comic characters as being good and exceedingly generous as well as
having an abundance of sentiment and feeling. Goldsmith is speaking especially of sentimental
comedy, the forerunner of the sit com. Tragic characters, however, are usually of a higher class, even
nobility Aristotle tells us. This seems to be more the case the further back in history we go. Oedipus
fits this description far better than the characters in Desire Under the Elms. Characters in tragedy may
be heroic and seem larger than life as does Hamlet. A quality of greatness is usually seen through
characters in a tragedy.
Comedies and tragedies also differ in their audience appeal. Hazlitt tells us when watching comedy we
laugh at what disappoints our expectations in trifles. But Henri Bergson warns us to expect laughter
without feeling. Bergson also believes that a group is necessary for comedy to work. George Meredith
says that comedy is dependent on a society where there is social freedom and common sense. This
may be why Chekhov s The Cherry Orchard is seen by some as a comedy but not by others. Since it
comments on social change, the humor would be a strain for Russian audiences who lack the social
freedom necessary to laugh at such ideas. Tragedy, on the other hand, evokes fear and pity according

Kennedy s Policy Goals During The Cold War
Kennedy learned various lessons from Cuba and Berlin such as: looking for diplomatic solutions,
being skeptical of his advisors, and to not act without plausible deniability. Kennedy would carry over
those lessons for the rest of his term as President. Had Kennedy remained President from 1964 1968,
the lessons acquired from Cuba and Berlin would have prevented an escalation in Vietnam. Kennedy
viewed getting involved in Vietnam as a disruption to his foreign policy goals. One of Kennedy s
primary concerns during the Cold War was preventing escalation with the Soviet Union, it was a larger
concern to him than to his advisors. The United States lacked support from other major countries and
by interfering in Vietnam, the relationship with China that Kennedy wanted would have been
negatively impacted. Kennedy s priority during the Cold War was to defuse conflicts in Europe, and
Vietnam would have been a secondary struggle with no real benefit. Kennedy demonstrated his
skepticism to his advisor s proposals by rejecting Rostow s Berlin proposals. As a second term
President, Kennedy would only have more freedoms when making foreign policy decisions. Kennedy
did not want militaristic escalation in Vietnam, and would ensure that escalation would not take place.
Although Kennedy did want to prevent the spread of communism in Southeast Asia, sending ground
troops was not the way he wanted to accomplish his goals. Kennedy would carry over his diplomatic
intentions or quick action

Wuthering Heights Thesis
At the center of Wuthering Heights lies a tragic vision of decay and detachment which depends
completely on the severances Emily Bronte has created between characters, estates, and social
statuses. Bronte reveals societal flaws that had never before been recognized during her time and
creates a raw vision of Victorian life; one in which the differences between characters and their social
standings outweigh their true beliefs and desires when it comes to who they choose to be, who they
choose to surround themselves with, and how they choose to treat those around them. In its most

Bronte illustrates the Heights as having a very blunt and intimidating appearance. It is a very strong

who inhabit it prove to be somewhat tormented souls. Nelly describes Heathcliff after his subjection to
the Heights without Catherine, A half civilized ferocity lurked yet in the depressed brows and eyes full
of black fire, but it was subdued; and his manner was even dignified: quite divested of roughness,
though too stern for grace (Bronte, 95). Just a few miles away, the Grange represents sanity and
sensibility with its refinement and pleasant appearance. The civility of its inhabitants, the Lintons, and
their distinguished status stand in stark contrast to the more disturbed Wuthering Heights. Bronte takes
great care to create these images of the two estates for readers because it is what they stand for that
drives Catherine and Heathcliff apart in the first place. Ironically, Bronte also uses setting to reunite
Catherine and Heathcliff. The moors that separate the two estates represent a sort of heaven for the
two, where they used to lose themselves when they were young, the only place either of the two ever
truly felt they belonged. It is here that the two roam together in the afterlife.
As previously discussed, Bronte is fully aware of the division between

Siddhartha River Analysis
Siddhartha
By Hermann Hesse LAP by Frank Palma
Topic 3
Insignificant droplets of water plunging to the ground, gradually elaborating into a system which
proclaims its existence with such scintillation and momentous significance, the river. The river that
carries the same inexorable rate which we live our lives by, parallels to the current of an unstoppable
river. Shifted to different directions by the different obstacles encountered, the river finds different
routes to get to the destination it desires and life mimics its nature as many avenues close and others
open. But the river carries on and does not pass through the same obstacle twice, it does not struggle
or brawl the happenings opposed to it, it simply takes another path and learns from its mistakes. The
river symbolizes life. In the book Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. The river plays a significant role on a
reflective surface which redirects his actions into the eyes of the protagonist, Siddhartha. Born as the
Brahmins Son, Siddhartha was surrounded by the luxuries and privileges of someone that has a
supreme role in the caste system. The concept of Siddhartha s life is represented by the river comes
into motion as we see the river being implemented in the early stages of the book as Herman Hesse
describes Siddhartha s childhood. Different actions, his childhood revolved around the river that
Siddhartha grew up in but most importantly he performs his rituals and his holy offerings. Suntanned

Roles Of A Grand Son
Roles are the parts that individuals play in society. Every single human being on earth has their own
unique set of roles. There are two kinds of roles, Ascribed, and achieved. An ascribed role, is a role
that people are born into, examples include the role of a grand son, or a Canadian. Achieved roles, are
roles that a person has to work to acquire, examples include; a teacher, or a politician. Two roles that I
currently possess are a university student, and a daughter. Being a daughter is an important role that I
play. The role of a daughter is an ascribed role, I know this because I did not have to work for it. I was
simply born into the role. As a daughter, I have plenty of important responsibilities. These
responsibilities are; loving and caring for my parents, helping as much around the house as I can while
I live there, and making sure I stay in contact with my parents when I am no longer living with them.
Along with the list of responsibilities I have when it comes to being a daughter, the role also comes
with a set of rights. These rights include love and protection, help with learning about the world
around me, and a house, and food until I am at least 18. The role of being a daughter plays a key role
in socialization and social belonging. My parents were my source of early attachment. Most
importantly, my parents were my primary agents of socialization. They taught me the language I
speak, my values, and norms. As a daughter, my parents culture was

Some Tips on Car Restoration
Some Tips on Car Restoration Whenever someone decides to take the initiative to restore a car, it
requires a serious commitment. I have seen too many people begin work and never finish. The
successful car restorer chooses a car that fits his/her personality and budget, and follows the job
through to the end. One must have a love for the process as well as the product, or the project will be
rushed and end up to be worthless. I learned this tedious process when I was just fourteen years old,
barely able to perform the difficult and sometimes dangerous tasks that are required to complete a
show car. I would not recommend taking the steps I did my first time, so I will outline the best method
I have learned through experience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The small block Chevrolet V 8 is the engine to get if you want to keep your options open. There are
endless possibilities for carburation, exhaust, ignition, cooling, and transmission compatibility. These
engines can generate anywhere from 150 horsepower to a stout 800 ponies with the help of nitrous
oxide fuels. For the common enthusiast, an aluminum air intake and a four barrel carburetor combine
to make the perfect upgrade. This is the path I took, increasing the horsepower of my 307 cubic inch V
8 from 200 to around 245. If oil is passing by the pistons into the firing chambers and being exhausted
in the form of blue smoke, rebuilding the engine is a good idea. This process is not as difficult as it
might seem, but there are many specialty tools required like an engine hoist, piston ring pliers, and a
cylinder reamer. It is a good idea to have it done professionally if the tools are not readily available. I
was lucky enough to have the garage space and tools to complete the job myself, but I would only
recommend this if you have a lot of time to spend on your engine. The more time that is spent on the
engine the better the project will be in the end. Once the mechanical systems of the car have been
completed, the interior (passenger compartment) is the most logical step to complete next. The cloth
that lines the roof is called the headliner. If it is in good shape, you are already half done.

Theories of Social Evolution Herbert Spencer versus Franz...
Theories of Social Evolution Herbert Spencer versus Franz Boaz
Herbert Spencer and Franz Boaz had two opposing theories on the social evolution
theory. Each theory was difficult to prove but great theories. But both theories had it s ups and
downs.
Herbert Spencer was born in England, he is best known for developing and applying the
evolutionary theory to philosophy and psychology. The evolutionary theory states that societies
go from simple societies to complex societies. The more complex a society is the more evolved
they are.
A complex society is more civilized with different social levels of politics, such as slaves
and kings. He proclaimed, Only the strongest survives. . Spencer explained a ... Show more content on

Spencer compared societies by categorizing race and culture, which he viewed at one
term. Spencer felt race and culture were not different enough to be classified as two different
terms. Spencer believed that every race that belonged to a society is the same as the next, but some are
more evolved then others. A simple society developed into a complex society through prospective
steps. A society
can go only from simple to complex. The only time a society could go from complex to simple
was if a national disaster occurred, but he explained that the most evolved society would develop
back at a faster rate. Boaz was a Jewish German American anthropologist and ethnologist. His theory
on
social evolution stated that no truly pure race existed and no race is innately superior to any
other. He confirmed the differences in peoples were the result of historical, social and
geographic conditions and all people had equally developed cultures. Boaz was objective. He lived
within different societies around the world while collecting
data on everything he saw, from language, customs and history. He concluded that a society can
survive through corporation just as well as a society can through competition. How a society
survives depends on it s psychological conditions, what satisfies their human needs. No matter

  • 2. Letter To Walden Dear Henry David Thoreau, You may be dead now, but you left a huge impact on the world and on the lives of high school and college students reading your essay Walden, for school. You spent two years at Walden Pond. Why you spent exactly that much time, why you got away from society, why you lived in a small house, will be cryptic to us. You say that this lifestyle was to avoid materialism and find yourself in nature to achieve transcendence. And, this was true in your large essay, for the most part. I began to learn from your writings (Walden, Civil disobedience), however confusing and metaphorical they are. I respect you and what you have taught society. But, you always contradict yourself. Also, I want to tell you know that in your essay of Walden you said that As you simplify live your life, the laws of the universe will be simple; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness will be weakness. I agree with you but considering that in the light of these modern days it is almost impossible to keep up with simplicity even though I know that to keep up with simplicity is a good thing. like I said, it is almost impossible for our generation to live without technology, without light, and without any facilities because in today s modern world technology is one of the most important parts of each of the individual lives. • 4. Analysis Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde By Robert Lewis Stevenson As the cities in the nineteenth century grew and expanded, more and more people moved from the countryside to said cities. With an increase in the size and population of the city a individual s anonymity increased as well. Both the Paris Morgue and the novella Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde written by Robert Lewis Stevenson portray the anonymity of modern city life. While middle class men often appreciated the anonymity of the city, because it allowed them to escape social class restrictions, they also feared some of the negative implications. The working class, on the other hand, might have enjoyed the new found entertainment options, however they also had to fear being victims of crime and ending as nameless corpses. Women, both from the middle class and working class, experienced more freedom through the entertainment and leisure time options available due to the anonymous character of the city. For the middle class man the anonymity of the city promised freedom from social restrictions, that hindered him from behaving in ways that were unseeming for a man of his standing. In his novella Stevenson writes about a wealthy middle class doctor, Dr. Henry Jekyll, who through a potion, could turn himself into a different person. • 8. A Rhetorical Analysis Of Over The Hedge The author of Animating Revolt and Revolting Animation, Judith Halberstam, uses rhetorical strategies to speak to her point that animated movies can be used to reach a wide ranging audience to convey deep underlying messages in a way that is entertaining for all. The author points out how Pixar movies brings non traditional characters to life and faces them against real life struggles but does so in a happy ending manor that captivates audiences. This is accomplished by the author introducing a plot line from a Pixar movie that illustrates a struggle or classic battle and then describes the characters that are in the struggle and how they live through it. The author then describes an actual real life struggle and relates it back to the animated movie. • 9. Analysis Of The Movie Monty Python And The Holy Grail In class, we watched the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail . This movie is set in the time of the middle ages (roughly 476 1453). It follows King Arthur and his knights as they search for the Holy Grail. They look for the Holy Grail after they are told to by God. The movie at first may seem like nonsense and a silly parody, but in reality, Monty Python and the Holy Grail demonstrates the truth of the Middle Ages, feudal hierarchy, and other topics we have discussed in class. In the Middle Ages, the Church was one of the most powerful forces. It was a very important part of the people s culture and was a unifying force for them. It gave people a common belief, protection and a sense of safety in a time of war. Many people relied on it to receive sacraments and go to heaven, especially peasants because that was about all they had going for them. The Church and it s matters were taken seriously and they maintained power throughout the Middle Ages. In the movie, the power of the church is shown in many scenes. For example, in the scene where King Arthur and his knights are trying to get into the cave but the rabbit is stopping them, they call in the priests to give them the Holy Hand Grenade . The priests take it very seriously and tell Arthur very specific instructions for it. He activates it and blows up the rabbit they are able to enter the cave. This shows that they believed that the church and God had the most power and the power to do anything. In a time of need, they turned to the Church. The feudal system was the method of government that was used in the Middle Ages. The feudal pyramid consisted of four levels, King at the top, Church Official and Nobles/Lords next, then Knights, and peasants at the bottom. The King had the most power, the nobles were sometimes vassals to the king, knights fought in the king s army, and peasants worked in the field all day and were very poor. In one scene of the movie, peasants are seen working in the fields. They are very dirty and have bad quality clothing which shows how little money and power they had compared to King Arthur, who had fancy clothing and did not have to work. This was completely accurate and was disheartening for David Toschi, the primary detective on the case because he could not uncover concrete evidence to convict Arthur Leigh Lee Allen. Lee was the number one suspect in the investigation and all signs pointed to him being the Zodiac, which was the main similarity between the publication and motion picture. In addition, the text contained two prime suspects but the feature film only fixated on one. One of Springsteen s verse makes this scene quite a real one for us as listeners, Come back home to the refinery/ Hiring man said son if it was up to me/ Went down to see my V.A. man/ He said son, don t you understand (Springsteen). It is impossible to create art in a vacuum, unaffected by the society and events surrounding you. The time period, location, and social changes and innovations can have a direct effect on the art produced. Political events, especially wars, can have a strong influence on the music and art produced at that time. For example, music may become more patriotic during a time of war as the composers strive to publicize their national pride. Throughout the course of his life, Stravinsky composed almost 100 works, ranging in genres. He began to be commissioned by the Ballet Russes in 1909 and by the following year was asked by Serge Diaghilev to produce The Firebird (Taruskin, White). The Ballet Russes was a Paris ballet company run by Serge Diaghilev that was known for its creative and inventive performances. Many people did not like the Ballet Russes innovative style and chose to watch classic ballet companies instead in order to continue the classical style that many believed ballet should express. However, Diaghilev was determined to do something unique with his ballet company and they made their performances extremely modern (Lockspeiser). The Firebird was the work that set Stravinsky s career on fire, and allowed his name to become spoken with respect and fame. It premiered at the Paris Opera on June 25, 1910. As said by Michael Jordan, everyone fails at something. No matter how good you are, you will not always succeed. Youth sports help children develop values, and teach children resilience. Not only do they teach children values, but they teach children why it is important to be physically active. Youth sports teach children how to transfer values into the classroom and become a better student. However, there should be guidelines in place to support youth development and increase a positive experience. Finally, we need to make sure our athletes are being coached properly, and effectively. We need to ensure that our youth are being coached by coaches who provide a positive experience for them, engage parents, and to emphasize future success in and out of sport. Youth sports are important for a variety of reason. They provide students with physical, psychological, academic, and social benefits. Some psychological benefits of sport include gaining self esteem from intrinsic motivation, developing social skills, leadership skills, and teamwork. Another important psychological benefit includes avenues for young people to take initiative, meaning that they can commit energy to a goal over time. Sports that could have a higher tendency for an athlete to tear the ACL are sports that require an athlete to decelerate quickly or need to cut and change direction instantly. For example, an article shows that a high impact sport has a higher percentage of ACL tears when compared to a low impact sport, such as football and women s soccer; football has a forty one percent ACL injury rate while women s soccer only has nineteen percent. Not only does the level of impact effect the likelihood of ACL injury, but the gender of the athlete as well. When looking at women s and men s soccer, men have a merely thirteen percent ACL injury rate because their physical structure along with their techniques when doing certain exercises. • 19. Heroic As A Hero What does the word heroic mean to you? What pops into your mind? For me when I think of the word heroic, I think of my dad. My dad has always supported me on all my decisions and he is alway reliable. Not only does my dad supports me on everything, he is also very understanding and humble. He has always been loving and patient, not only with me, but with the small town of Manton. He also goes out of his way to make others feel good before himself. It was the year of 2010, the sun was shining and the wind was slight. I was on my way home from school when my aunt Angie s phone started ringing. She was driving so she let my cousin Haley answer her phone. It was my dad, he was calling with the most life changing news I have ever heard. It was about my mom, she couldn t be found, no one has heard from her all day. My dad made me come home right away. When I got home he ran over to me and wrapped his soft arms around me and held me so very closely. That life changing day, has made my dad and I more closer. Since she has been gone, there hasn t been one day that he hasn t been by my side. Not only is he always there for me he is also a very reliable person. In our town of Manton, my dad has been a very flexible, helping, and a very patient community member. Along with that, he has been a great role model for me. My father has been the host of the Bluegrass Festival, Harvest Festival, and many more Community gatherings. He volunteers his own personal time to help others that are in need. An example of this is his career. His career of being a pharmacist changed from employee to boss very quickly. He helps others when they are in need of medicine or have medical concerns during out of business hours. He makes time to deliver from five to ten pm on his own time. When I watch him do all this community service, volunteer, and put others first, it makes me do the same. That is why he is a very loving flexible, helping, patient, role model. Also there are the people and Holmes; the poet, Everard Hall; as the host. They gather around the wassail bowl (hot mulled cider) and discuss how the honor seems gone from Christmas. The speaker is tired from his day of ice skating and falling, and he dozes off, waking to the parson lamenting the general lack of faith throughout the world. Francis jokes and says he holds faith in Everard, and Everard responds by saying he has faith in the cider. The speaker asks Everard what became of his great gift of poetry that was so evident in college, and Francis says that Everard had been working on twelve books about King Arthur but threw them into the fire. It seems that Everard thought nothing new was said and the books were mere Homeric echoes, nothing worth. Francis says he has saved one book from the fire. The speaker s ears prick up, and he remembers the talent of his friend. After some urging, the poet begins to read. The noise of battle goes on all day. Faith, or undying trust, can be applied to many areas of life in our pursuit of knowledge; whether it may be for religious purposes or having confidence in world leaders or family members. Although it does not require physical evidence, faith is based on such strong beliefs that so many trust it to be the truth. Unfortunately, as human beings, we may not always be correct in our way of thinking. Questions concerning faith as a way of knowing arise when regarding morals or ethics, as well as some have a different faith than others. Faith is a more modern approach to a way of knowing, however, has played such a large part since the beginning of human existence. While thinking of faith, religion is usually first to come to mind. And it is true, faith plays a large part in religion. You must have faith that your way of life is the way you are meant to live. As previously stated, faith does not require empirical evidence, however not having any evidence is justified in the individual s life. In many religions, faith offers structure to its follower s lives, which helps guide them into the right direction. In addition to this, who are we to tell an individual that their faith is not properly justified, therefore, cannot be absolute truth? In the beginning years of his career, he was influenced by Antonin Dvorak, who was Suk s professor at a music academy called Prague Conservatory. In 1898, Josef Suk ended up marrying Otilie Dvorak, who was the daughter of Antonin Dvorak. Within the happy life they lived together, Otilie was impressed with her father s and husband s works of music and she loved to play the piano, but sadly died at a young age. After the death of Otilie, Suk went back to revise A Winter s Tale, which was later released to the public in May of 1999. A Winter s Tale Op. 9, based on Shakespeare was written in 1894. This falls into the genre romance and it has a dramatic structure. The storyline is about two lovers and how the music variations symbolize their battles with being together. The overture starts with a slow introduction to the piece of work. A clarinet is heard against a descending figure for muted violins. It reflects to the storyline, which starts with an act of jealousy, due to the King of Sicilia suspecting that his wife is cheating on him with one of his friends. The King of Sicilia s daughter was abandoned by her father s orders and brought in a country village. The scene highlights the fact that every single thing in the film will be seen through that particular window. Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window is a great example of first rate camerawork. The camera is used as the narrator and probably plays the biggest role within the film. At the start of the film, the camera is used to pan around every single apartment within the inner city New York apartment block to introduce the characters. Operant conditioning is the behavior in which voluntary behavior are strengthened or weakened by consequences, while continuous reinforcement deals with giving a reinforcer after every response. These reinforcers can be either positive or negative, strengthening or weakening the behavior that occurred. Positive reinforcements are there to increase the opportunity of a specific behavior reoccurring and negative reinforcement is strengthening behavior that results in a negative action. (Woolfolk, 2014, pgs. 277 278). An example in Mr. Higginbotham s class of positive reinforcement would be during the point in time when he decides to announce that his progress checks can each be earned towards bonus points on their project and once ten complete progress checks have occurred the children can also receive a homework pass. Another positive reinforcement is the three highest scoring students will receive twenty five dollars to their class trip fund for their senior year. A negative reinforcement is demonstrated in Mr. Higginbotham s class when Susan shows disrespectful behavior and earns four detentions. These four detentions equal a day of indoor, in school suspension. • 28. Design And Functionalism Of The Industrial Revolution The industrial revolution was the transition to industrialisation and urbanisation, which took place from the 18th to 19th centuries. Industrialisation shifted the manufacturing of goods from small quantities using basic machinery at home, to mass production with the mechanisation of machinery. The task of drafting a product was no longer left with the craftsmen, thus the creation of the design profession. (Hauffe, 1998, p.11) Mass production and series production is defined as the large quantity manufacturing of goods, using assembly line techniques and standardised designs. Manufactured products that contributed to a high turnover use new sales methods, including catalogs, sales representatives and advertising. In addition, the ability to create more cost effective and accessible products. The term form follows function is the principle that the shape of an object should be based upon its intended purpose. Modernist design and functionalism supporters assumed two different perspectives of the term. 1. The form of an object had only suit its function without unnecessary details. 2. The process behind manufacturing products needs to be simple and straight forward using a metric language, produced of high quality and long lasting These assumptions create a clear perspective of the intent to design with the clear point of focus in terms of function, to create an object of simplification. According to Albert Camus, a French existentialist writer and philosopher, a one s urge to find the ultimate answer for the question is rather absurd. He believed that people search for the meaning of anything is vain because a source of meaning as such is non existent. In addition to that, Camus literary works are often associated to the idea of absurdism and that is the thing he and Douglas Adams have in common. Therefore, the main focus of my essay is absurdity, as it is the main theme in the work of Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy. But why has Adams chosen it to be one of The Hitchhiker s leading topics? Of course, one can argue that there cannot be a proper sci fi novel without a certain level of absurdity included. Adolf Hitler, the leader of Germany, thought the Jews were the reason that Germany lost World War I (Jews in Nazi Germany History Learning Site). Hitler blamed them for almost all of Germany s problems and he wanted to exterminate the entire Jewish population. The Shawl , written by Cynthia Ozick, tells one of the many horrifying stories from the Holocaust. The story has three main characters: the young mother Rosa, her baby Magda, and her fourteen year old niece Stella. God created the Earth and the oceans, and they were good. Everything that God created was good, but some of his creations were agents of evil and others were victims. God gave humans dominion over the plants and the animals, and that was created to be good. But, this dominion is misunderstood as it is read in a literal sense, and not within context of the time that the bible was written. Humans are not given dominion in the sense of sovereignty and control, but rather humans are to respect plants and animals, they are to till it and keep it (Genesis 2:15). Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si says that tilling refers to cultivating, ploughing or working, while keeping means caring, protecting, overseeing and preserving. This implies a relationship of mutual responsibility between human beings and nature. Each community can take from the bounty of the earth whatever it needs for subsistence, but it also has the duty to protect the earth and to ensure its fruitfulness for coming generations (¶67). The final route she has is whistleblowing under the assumption she exhausted all internal options. As a spot check, the first alternative would be unethical. As stated in the final step of evaluating ethical conflicts, one should consider leaving the relationship with the given organization, so they are not in violation of the code. As determined in the previous issue, SCE was in violation of the code by recognizing revenue in the current period. Therefore, Gilmore would be associated with this violation by staying in employment with SEC. The narration in a comedy often involves union and togetherness as we see in the marriage scene at the end of Midsummer s Night Dream. William Hazlitt tells us that one can also expect incongruities, misunderstandings, and contradictions. I am reminded of the play The Importance of Being Ernest and the humor by way of mistaken identity. Sigmund Freud tells us to expect excess and exaggeration in comedy. Chekhov s Marriage Proposal displays this excess both in language and in movements. Charles Darwin insists that in a comedy circumstances must not be of a momentous nature; whereas, Northop Frye identifies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Comic characters are often likable and sweet as Jack and Algeron in The Importance of Being Ernest. Oliver Goldsmith characterizes comic characters as being good and exceedingly generous as well as having an abundance of sentiment and feeling. Goldsmith is speaking especially of sentimental comedy, the forerunner of the sit com. Tragic characters, however, are usually of a higher class, even nobility Aristotle tells us. This seems to be more the case the further back in history we go. Oedipus fits this description far better than the characters in Desire Under the Elms. Characters in tragedy may be heroic and seem larger than life as does Hamlet. A quality of greatness is usually seen through characters in a tragedy. Comedies and tragedies also differ in their audience appeal. Hazlitt tells us when watching comedy we laugh at what disappoints our expectations in trifles. But Henri Bergson warns us to expect laughter without feeling. Bergson also believes that a group is necessary for comedy to work. George Meredith says that comedy is dependent on a society where there is social freedom and common sense. This may be why Chekhov s The Cherry Orchard is seen by some as a comedy but not by others. Since it comments on social change, the humor would be a strain for Russian audiences who lack the social freedom necessary to laugh at such ideas. Kennedy viewed getting involved in Vietnam as a disruption to his foreign policy goals. One of Kennedy s primary concerns during the Cold War was preventing escalation with the Soviet Union, it was a larger concern to him than to his advisors. The United States lacked support from other major countries and by interfering in Vietnam, the relationship with China that Kennedy wanted would have been negatively impacted. In its most distinct form, Wuthering Heights is a love story that chronicles the lives of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, regardless of the distance between them. It is ... It is a very strong and prominent structure, however it proves to be a very desolate and lonely place. Likewise, those who inhabit it prove to be somewhat tormented souls. Nelly describes Heathcliff after his subjection to the Heights without Catherine, A half civilized ferocity lurked yet in the depressed brows and eyes full of black fire, but it was subdued; and his manner was even dignified: quite divested of roughness, though too stern for grace (Bronte, 95). Just a few miles away, the Grange represents sanity and sensibility with its refinement and pleasant appearance. The civility of its inhabitants, the Lintons, and their distinguished status stand in stark contrast to the more disturbed Wuthering Heights. Bronte takes great care to create these images of the two estates for readers because it is what they stand for that drives Catherine and Heathcliff apart in the first place. Ironically, Bronte also uses setting to reunite Catherine and Heathcliff. The moors that separate the two estates represent a sort of heaven for the two, where they used to lose themselves when they were young, the only place either of the two ever truly felt they belonged. It is here that the two roam together in the afterlife. As previously discussed, Bronte is fully aware of the division between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Siddhartha River Analysis Siddhartha By Hermann Hesse LAP by Frank Palma Topic 3 Insignificant droplets of water plunging to the ground, gradually elaborating into a system which proclaims its existence with such scintillation and momentous significance, the river. The river that carries the same inexorable rate which we live our lives by, parallels to the current of an unstoppable river. Shifted to different directions by the different obstacles encountered, the river finds different routes to get to the destination it desires and life mimics its nature as many avenues close and others open. But the river carries on and does not pass through the same obstacle twice, it does not struggle or brawl the happenings opposed to it, it simply takes another path and learns from its mistakes. • 44. Roles Of A Grand Son Roles are the parts that individuals play in society. Every single human being on earth has their own unique set of roles. There are two kinds of roles, Ascribed, and achieved. An ascribed role, is a role that people are born into, examples include the role of a grand son, or a Canadian. Achieved roles, are roles that a person has to work to acquire, examples include; a teacher, or a politician. Two roles that I currently possess are a university student, and a daughter. Being a daughter is an important role that I play. The role of a daughter is an ascribed role, I know this because I did not have to work for it. I was simply born into the role. As a daughter, I have plenty of important responsibilities. These responsibilities are; loving and caring for my parents, helping as much around the house as I can while I live there, and making sure I stay in contact with my parents when I am no longer living with them. Along with the list of responsibilities I have when it comes to being a daughter, the role also comes with a set of rights. These rights include love and protection, help with learning about the world around me, and a house, and food until I am at least 18. The role of being a daughter plays a key role in socialization and social belonging. My parents were my source of early attachment. Most importantly, my parents were my primary agents of socialization. They taught me the language I speak, my values, and norms. As a daughter, my parents culture was ... • 45. Some Tips on Car Restoration Some Tips on Car Restoration Whenever someone decides to take the initiative to restore a car, it requires a serious commitment. I have seen too many people begin work and never finish. The successful car restorer chooses a car that fits his/her personality and budget, and follows the job through to the end. One must have a love for the process as well as the product, or the project will be rushed and end up to be worthless. I learned this tedious process when I was just fourteen years old, barely able to perform the difficult and sometimes dangerous tasks that are required to complete a show car. I would not recommend taking the steps I did my first time, so I will outline the best method I have learned through experience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The small block Chevrolet V 8 is the engine to get if you want to keep your options open. There are endless possibilities for carburation, exhaust, ignition, cooling, and transmission compatibility. These engines can generate anywhere from 150 horsepower to a stout 800 ponies with the help of nitrous oxide fuels. For the common enthusiast, an aluminum air intake and a four barrel carburetor combine to make the perfect upgrade. This is the path I took, increasing the horsepower of my 307 cubic inch V 8 from 200 to around 245. If oil is passing by the pistons into the firing chambers and being exhausted in the form of blue smoke, rebuilding the engine is a good idea. This process is not as difficult as it might seem, but there are many specialty tools required like an engine hoist, piston ring pliers, and a cylinder reamer. It is a good idea to have it done professionally if the tools are not readily available. I was lucky enough to have the garage space and tools to complete the job myself, but I would only recommend this if you have a lot of time to spend on your engine. The more time that is spent on the engine the better the project will be in the end. Once the mechanical systems of the car have been completed, the interior (passenger compartment) is the most logical step to complete next. The cloth that lines the roof is called the headliner. Theories of Social Evolution Herbert Spencer versus Franz Boaz Herbert Spencer and Franz Boaz had two opposing theories on the social evolution theory. Each theory was difficult to prove but great theories. But both theories had it s ups and downs. Herbert Spencer was born in England, he is best known for developing and applying the evolutionary theory to philosophy and psychology. The evolutionary theory states that societies go from simple societies to complex societies. The more complex a society is the more evolved they are. A complex society is more civilized with different social levels of politics, such as slaves and kings. He proclaimed, Only the strongest survives. . Spencer explained a ... Spencer felt race and culture were not different enough to be classified as two different terms. Spencer believed that every race that belonged to a society is the same as the next, but some are more evolved then others. A simple society developed into a complex society through prospective steps. A society can go only from simple to complex. The only time a society could go from complex to simple was if a national disaster occurred, but he explained that the most evolved society would develop back at a faster rate. Boaz was a Jewish German American anthropologist and ethnologist. His theory on social evolution stated that no truly pure race existed and no race is innately superior to any other. He confirmed the differences in peoples were the result of historical, social and
