Literary Techniques Used In Beowulf
In the epic poem Beowulf , Beowulf himself used a variety of unique and smart methods and ways to
win and defeat the monster s that tormented Herrot. One method he used to defeat and kill one of his
enemies was with the element of surprise and with no weapon. Another method he used to defeat and
kill another one of his enemies was by going in right through the front door of the enemy s lair. His
method to that was originally thought of to kill his last enemy didn t work out so well and had to get
help from a loyal and brave warrior, Wiglaf. Beowulf was constantly changing his methods and
strategy s to win the battles and obstacles that he was confronted with.
One method Beowulf used, to find and kill Grendel, was with the element of surprise and with his
bare hands. Beowulf s method and plan to kill Grendel was to lure him to him, surprise Grendel, and
finally, attack and kill Grendel. Beowulf lured in Grendel by staying in the Mead Hall, where he knew
Grendel would search for something to kill. Then, to get Grendel distracted, he sacrificed one of his
own warriors to get eaten so Grendel would have his focus on the warrior he was eating and
murdering. Finally, when Beowulf saw the perfect time to attack and kill Grendel, he took it. Beowulf

So Beowulf started to hunt for the dragon. At first, he tried to sneak up on the dragon. He would soon
learn that sneaking on the dragon wasn t so smart of him. The dragon found Beowulf and the battle
between them both was ignited. Beowulf tried to strike the dragon, but as soon as his sword came in
contact with the dragon, the sword broke. A warrior named Wiglaf noticed that Beowulf was in serious
danger. Since all of the other warriors cowered out, Wiglaf stood up to the plate and helped Beowulf.

Project #2
Project #2 Conic Sections Conic sections are the various gemetric figures created by the interection of
a plane. They are among the oldest curves in history and is one of the oldest area of study for
mathmaticians. conics were discovered by Menaechmus (c. 375 325 BC), a Greek pupil of Plato and
Exodus. He was trying to solve the famous problem duplicating a cube. Euclid studied them and
Appollonius reinforced and expanded previous results of conics into a book he named Conic Sections.
It is a series of eight books with 487 propositions. He applied his findings to the study of planetary
motion and it was used to advance the development of Greek astronomy. It is because of Appollonius
that the name ellipse, parabola, and hyperbole were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In some cases, the circle is listed as a fourth conic. A circle is really a unique ellipse. Conics have very
unique features. For instance curves can also be defined using a straight line, the directrix, and a point
called the focus. If you measure the distance from the focus to a point on the curve, and
perpendicularly from the directrix to that point. The two distances will always be the same ratio for an
ellipse the ratio is less than 1, for a parabola the ratio is 1, and for a hyperbola the ratio is greater than
1. These ratios are known as the eccentricity, so we can say that any conic section is all points whose
distance to the focus is equal to the eccentricity times the distance to the directrix. A circle has an
eccentricity of zero, an ellipse has an eccentricity between 0 and 1, a parabola has an eccentricity of 1,
and a hyperbola has an eccentricity greater than 1.
Ellipse is known by its focal definition: it s a locus of all points P in the plane the sum of whose
distances from two fixed points F1 and F2, the foci, has a constant value. The Belgian mathematician
G. P. Dandelin in 1822 gave a beautiful proof of a conic section is a finite shape then it is always an
ellipse. First imagine a huge sphere S1 inside a cone. Let the sphere be so big as to not touch the
cutting plane. Assume it touches the cone over the circle k1. Shrink the sphere S1 (suck it into the
cone) until it touches the plane at point F1.

Francisco s Restaurant and Cotton Patch Cafe Most people or college students like me have work in
the food industry. While I have only worked in two restaurants my whole life, I have learned so much
about food and management. First I worked in Francisco s Tex Mex Restaurant while I was still in
High School. Then, after graduating I changed to Cotton Patch Cafe because they could fit my
schedule better. Although they have many similarities, both follow different procedures in making
food and managing. Cotton Patch Cafe and Francisco s Restaurant relate to the same industry but have
differences in their service and cuisine. (Thesis) To begin, both restaurants have great service but both

They even have a professional chef that creates these amazing food and recipes. Each recipe has its
instructions well developed for better quality food. In addition, they have their secret seasoning
recipes which gives food a whole different flavor. However, recipes in Francisco s are not always
followed. To illustrate, they don t measure the condiments while making the food. Because some
recipes come from the owner s traditions, they don t like changing the recipes for a better taste.
Consequently, this causes the prep cook to not follow recipes. One reason customers come back is
because of their original flavor and taste. (STS 2) Cotton Patch Cafe is an american style cuisine.
Their best sellers are the juicy steaks, fried food and seafood but they sell other tasty food like salads

and Dr. Pepper chocolate cake. On the other hand, Francisco s has a traditional mexican style cuisine.
Some of the food has the flavor and taste I would find in Mexico. For example, the stuffed chiles with
Monterey Jack cheese and taco meat are delicious. One appetizer that is quite unique is the fried

My Career Path For A Teacher
On October 21, 2015 my cooperating teacher mocked me in front of my class. You see I was the
student teacher in a second grade classroom at Charles Olbon Elementary School. After class I went
home, locked myself in my bedroom and I started pondering my future and my career path. I thought I
would not be a good teacher, why did I choose this career path? I choose this path because my friends
and family saw me a teacher, but I guess they do not know the real me. In 2003 at the age of ten years
old I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. My father saw me down at the kitchen table and strongly
advised me to go into an easy profession. He instructed me to become a teacher, therefore I mindlessly
agreed to his requests. Then when I entered college, I did not enjoy the teaching classes and I told my
friends, family, and fellow teachers. However everyone told me the similar line: you will make a great
teacher, you re just nervous cause you re almost graduating, just stick it out and get your degree. I
listened to others while ignoring my inner voice and passion. Now fast forward to October 23 25th I
ended up skipping student teaching to go into the city for Robert McKee s Story and Storynomics
seminar class. I consider myself a happy go lucky person who is a positive thinker and dreamer
however on this particular day when my mom dropped me off at the bus station I was in a depressed
state of mind. The night before I stayed in my bed didn t eat dinner, and I just cried

Theory on Control of Assets Essay
Part 1: Theory on control of assets
1) Internal controls are methods that a company puts in place to ensure the integrity of financial
reports and accounting information, and that they meet operational and profitability targets. They are
implemented to assure the safe guarding of assets as well as to detect fraud and any other errors. As
such, they provide the company with reasonable assurance that specific objectives will be achieved.
2) The overall purpose of internal controls is to help a department achieve their goals by establishing
protocols, preventing fraud and theft, separating duties, organizing information, reducing errors,
protecting assets, making sure people adhere to policies and to ensure accurate accounting records ...

An internal auditing process would consist of a series of questions being asked and compared to the
criteria needed, thereafter conclusions would be drawn up and a plan put in place.
Examples: ( The process of internal auditing )
➢ Condition: What is the particular problem identified?
➢ Criteria: What is the standard that was not met? The standard may be a company policy or other
benchmark.
➢ Cause: Why did the problem occur?
➢ Consequence: What is the risk/negative outcome (or opportunity foregone) because of the finding?
➢ Corrective action: What should management do about the finding? What have they agreed to do
and by when?
➢ Every month a small portion of money disappears and no one knows where and how this happens.
An internal auditor will follow a set process similar to the above one and put in place a strategy or a
new system in order to minimize the risks and to stop the problem
4) a) Preventive controls:
Stopping things from happening. They are designed to keep errors or irregularities from occurring in
the first place.
*E.g. Segregation of duties, safes, burglar bars or metal detectors.
Examples:
Installing metal detectors will allow you to monitor movement of stock. You will know every time
stock leaves the store when it hasn t been paid for and this will monitor and prevent theft.
Storing valuables in safes or enclosed secure areas also prevents theft.
Assign an individual to receive cash but then a different

Character Analysis Of A Room With A View
Claire Conti
AP Literature
Mrs. Scruggs
29 August 2017
A Room With A View Lucy is a young woman born and raised in 19th century England, when the
country was in its prime. England was the world power, causing it to be extremely wealthy and a safe
place to live. Lucy and her aunt go on vacation to Italy, and her eyes are opened to a whole other
world. During the time, Italy was a scummy city where the poor lived, but she is able to discover
herself while vacationing there. Within Italy, she finds love, adventure and exhilaration that she could
never experience in her homeland. In A Room with a View by E. M. Foster, Lucy s character is
dynamically developed from uptight and predictable to full of adventure and excitement as she travels
between the prime and proper England to the dirty and unkempt Italy. England is clean, neat and
boring, which makes Lucy predictable and boring due to the structured life she is forced to live. The
buildings within the city of London are simply lackluster in both looks and character. As Lucy gazes
upon a meadow, she notices how pretty cottages lined it on two sides, and the upper and third side was
occupied by a new stone church, expensively simple (82). There is no exciting architecture in
England, but everything is very old and very expensive. The diction used to describe the buildings and
the city illustrates how archaically beautiful England is, but highlights how humdrum it becomes it
Lucy. Then, when she returns from Italy, she is

Joy Kogawa s Where There Is A Wall
The poem Where There is a Wall by Joy Kogawa is about the struggles of overcoming challenges in
life. Kogawa s poem addresses a social phenomenon. The poet was born in Vancouver, British
Columbia and her writing style is explained by the events that happened early on in her life. Kogawa s
family was sent to an internment camp for Japanese Canadians during World Word II. Therefore, the
poet s history with racism has greatly impacted her and influences her writing today. Considering the
poets past experiences with racism the poem is told in an objective view and could be described as her
giving an inspirational pep talk to her readers. For the most part, the poet s word choice is concrete
and the poem is free of clichés. Also, the diction that

The Possibility Of Evil Short Story
We all like to look at things that appeal to us. But sometimes appearances can deceive us: such as a
good deal going online until you re ready to pay and they hit you with shipping and handling taxes and
therefore raising the price dramatically. Or a movie that has a good trailer but once you watch it as a
result the movie was not as good as it appeared to be. It s good to notice the bigger picture and to
analyze it in more depth, rather than judge it but it s first sight. The main characters in the short stories
Lamb to the Slaughter , by Roald Dahl, The Possibility of Evil , by Shirley Jackson, could have
adapted from this lesson. In Lamb to the Slaughter Mrs. Maloney is this sweet, loving and caring wife
who loves her husband dearly, but once he came back from work he hit her with heartbreaking and
bad news: which sets her off. In The Possibility of Evil Miss Strangeworth appears to be this kind and
respected elderly lady, but behind close doors she is completely different. Just because we see
something to appear to be good doesn t mean that it can t reveal it s true colors in a blink of an eye. Or
that it could be the total opposite of your initial though. In both stories, the reader discovers that even
though something may appear to be one thing, it could turn out to be something completely different.
In The Possibility of Evil, Shirley Jackson gives us a character who may seem to be the town s most
respected and longest established resident, but who actually

Compare And Contrast Twilight And The Vampire Diaries
Twilight Movie Series Versus The Vampire Diaries Television Series It is an extraordinary thing to
meet someone who you can bare your soul to and accept you for what you are , this is a quote from
Edward Cullen in the movie Twilight. The Twilight movie series focuses on Bella and Edward s love
life and what it entails. These movies came out from 2008 2012. In 2009 the CW came out with the hit
television series The Vampire Diaries, which focuses on Elena Gilbert and her life along with the
Salvatore brothers. Both series originated from a book series and have been a popular source of
entertainment for years. The Twilight movie series and The Vampire Diaries television series both
have similarities and differences that revolve around the main characters, content, and story line. First,
to compare and contrast Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, the main characters need to be analyzed.
Bella Swan and Edward Cullen are the main characters in the Twilight movies, while Elena Gilbert
and Stefan and Damon Salvatore are the main characters in The Vampire Diaries. Both Elena and
Bella are humans at the beginning of each series and fall in love with a vampire. However, the
similarities between the two female characters end there. Elena is an older sibling and very protective
of her younger brother, Jeremy. Elena is also very popular and has many friends. Elena makes it very
clear in the series that she does not want to be a vampire. Bella, on the other hand, wants to become a

Figurative Language In A Devil In The White City
Have you ever known a psychopath who finds pleasure of going around and murdering thousands of
people? In Erik Larson s nonfiction novel, A Devil in the White City, published in 2003, he sets the
scene around the World s Fair in Chicago. During this time, the city preoccupies themselves with the
new construction and excitement of the fair that it draws away attention from the rather secretive, sly,
serial killer, H.H. Holmes. Larson uses figurative language, imagery, and juxtaposition throughout the
entire novel to develop just how sinister natured Holmes truly is.
Throughout his novel, Erik Larson uses figurative language to reference the iniquitous, hidden
personality displayed in Holmes. For example, the office building where Holmes portrays his work is
similar to an empty space, where the gaslight [cannot] reach (Larson 166) it fully, which evokes the
feelings of loneliness and detachment in the reader s mind. Holmes is never bothered with while
working and he often does his work solemnly in the dark, so nobody is able to watch him, allowing
the reader to see just how closed off he truly is. He then continues to show the reader Holmes more
demented side by alluding to Jack the Ripper s killings relating to the strokes of Van Gogh s paintings.
The way Holmes [slashes people s] throat (Larson 70) illustrates how Holmes sees murder as graceful,
like each killing is a new piece of art. By comparing Holmes to Jack the Ripper, it paints a vivid image
in the reader s head

Critique Of John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
Thomas Scarseth included several critiques in his published article. Scareth focused on pointing out
the examples of theme, character, and symbolism in the novel, Of Mice and Men. He supported his
claims with strong textual evidence. Hev then went on to explain the reasoning behind his views.
On the topic of the novel s characters,Scarseth and I have a slight deviation in how we think the
characters went through their lives, especially when it comes to Curley, and his wife. ... They are
trying to do the best they can; they are trying to he good people and to have good lives. They have
good intentions. They have noble aims. Here is where my opinion is different. I strongly believe that

We humans may die, but we can love one another. This applies especially to Lennie and George.
Lennie had already had an Incident, prior to his final one, which proved fatal to his victim . George
had instructed Lennie to hide in a secure spot where only the two of them knew. After Lennie killed
Curley s wife, this is what he did. After waiting in hiding at the location for some time, George
showed up, and ultimately had to shoot Lennie. George did this because he loved lennie. He knew that
Curley was on his way, and that he was armed. If Lennie had fallen into Curley s hands, I am almost
100% positive that he would have suffered at Curley s hand. He would have died slowly, and
painfully. George loved Lennie so much, that he took matters into his own hands, and killed Lennie.
When reading this part, some of my classmates were against what George had done. But I see why. I
look at it this way. If I had someone who I loved, I would save them, and sacrifice my own freedom. If
anyone did what George did in today s time, they would be sent to jail. But if you really truly did love
that person, the sacrifice would be worth it. The choices that both Lennie and George made in the final
chapters of the book reflect their character. Lennie was a giant of a man, with immense physical
strength, but very little mental strength. He could be describe as a gentle giant , for lack of a better
phrase. He did have several incidents where his strength got the best of him, but he was a tender, kind
man, even though he had the physical capability to harm almost anyone with ease. George is an able
bodied man, who could be on his own, working to achieve his dream of owning his own land.
However, he instead chooses to stay with Lennie, and look after him the best that he can. If George
wasn t there to look after Lennie, Lennie probably would have ran into trouble a lot sooner than he did

Statement Of Purpose For Petroleum Engineering
Pratiksha Tathed MS: Petroleum Engineering Statement of Purpose It is when I struggle that I
strengthen. It is when challenged to my core that I learn the depth of who I am. I kept on repeating this

Why You Should Not Stand Without A Thesis
In the same way that a house, gorgeously designed and elegantly decorated as it may be, cannot stand
without a solid foundation, so can a college essay not stand without a thesis statement. Of course, facts
and the way in which they are presented are vital to whatever point a writer is trying to make, but
without a central foundation to link the arguments, all one can hope to present is a collection of
various points jumbled together in an futile attempt to grasp some sense of reason. A thesis is precisely
that foundation; a crucial statement that tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper ,
according to Writing Center. Since the thesis presents the central arguments of an essay, it must be
corroborated by the rest of the author s work, otherwise it will not suffice to convince a professor of
the matters it addresses. In addition to being the cornerstone of the essay, Aims says that a thesis states
why the essay is important and worth reading . Certainly, a thesis may be well constructed to inform
the reader about the subject of the paper. However, if it is not captivating and fails to provide the
reader with a good reason as to why he or she should spend their time learning about the matters of the
essay, the writer has already made a fatal flaw since the reader will begin the essay uninterested.

Taking Command from Colonel Michael Dane Steele
From June to 2004 to present, beloved Colonel Michael Dane Steele is in command of 3rd Brigade,
101st Airborne Division (Rakkasans). I have just been notified that I will take command from Colonel
Steele in November 2006 which leaves just short of six months for me to plan for the change. A
review of author Raffi Khatchadourian s article, The Kill Company, published in The New Yorker on
July 6, 2009 is necessary for background in writing this paper, however; the timeframe assumed for
the purpose of writing this essay is June 2004. To this end, it must also be assumed that the author
does not benefit from the knowledge gained by reading most of the information in Khatchadourian s
article. My goal is to set and maintain an effective, ethical command climate through investigation,
self education, and unit wide professional military education. With the knowledge that General
Chiarelli felt Colonel Steele s ...acts, omissions, and personal example have created a command
climate where irresponsible behavior appears to have been allowed to go unchecked, it is time for
change. Colonel Steele s military reputation yields a loyal following of soldiers after returning from
combat with less than half the amount of casualties felt by former commands operating in the same
area of operations in Iraq, in large part due to his leadership style. The redeeming qualities of his
methods are largely tactical and are to be continued under my command conducting the intense

character, Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), who explores another vast Solar System in search of a
new Earth like home. On his journey to discover this new planet, Cooper learns a tremendous amount
about love, greed, and life. In Interstellar, Christopher Nolan puts emotion and reason up against each

The Earthworm is a crucial component of the environment due to their interactions with soil which
then, in turn, provides benefits to other living organisms such as their burrowing behavior, which
allows nutrients, air, and water to delve deeper into the soil. After soil is swallowed by the pharynx,
the food matter is sent through the esophagus and into the crop, where the soil is stored until it

War Of The Worlds Chapter 1 Summary
War of the Worlds Chapter One Despite its location, Dot s Donut Shop was about to get famous. I
mean, being the crash site for the second wave of aliens on earth can earn quite the reputation, and
what are the odds I would be working there that very day? Well, to understand my position entirely,
we need to go back to the beginning. In 1939, the U.S. declared itself a neutral country in the
European conflict that would come to be known as World War II. In 1941, Franklin Roosevelt became
the first and only president elected for three terms. Later that year, Japan attacked the U.S. at Pearl
Harbor. These events spiraled into the earth changing event that was the bombing of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. Many scientists believe this to be the event that caused the Invasion, as it sent some sort of
radioactive wave throughout the galaxy. Although people tend to may disagree with each other, there
was no doubt that it was a devastating blow to the entire world. The Roswell crash in 1947 was the
first contact we had with any species not from Earth. Although the creature didn t survive long enough
to greet us, it seems it was alive long enough to send a distress signal, calling the rest of its friends. We
scavenged what we could from the wreckage, using it to create new technologies that advanced our
world by a couple hundred years. What would have taken us 100 ... Show more content on

The Soldier In Tim OBrien s The Things They Carried
One of the main characters in the short story The Things They Carried , written by Tim O Brien, is a
twenty four year old Lieutenant named Jimmy Cross. Jimmy is the assigned leader of his infantry unit
in the Vietnam War, but does not assume his role accordingly. Instead, he s constantly daydreaming,
along with obsessing, over his letters and gifts from Martha. Martha is a student at Mount Sebastian
College in New Jersey, Jimmy s home state. He believes that he is in love with Martha, although she
shows no signs of loving him. This obsession is a fantasy that he uses to escape from reality, as well
as, take his mind off of the war that surrounds him, in Vietnam. The rest of the men in his squad have
items that they carry too, as a way of connecting to their homes. The story depicts the soldiers by the
baggage that they carry, both mentally and physically. After the death of one of his troops, Ted
Lavender, Jimmy finally realizes that his actions have been detrimental to the squad as a whole. He
believes that if he would have been a better leader, that Ted Lavender would have never been shot and
killed. The physical and emotional baggage that Jimmy totes around with him, in Vietnam, is holding
him back from fulfilling his responsibilities as the First Lieutenant of his platoon. Jimmy has apparent
character traits that hold him back from being the leader that he needs to be, such as inexperience and
his lack of focus; but develops the most important character trait in the

Comparison Of Watson And Winslow Homer Portrayed In The...
The works of art, that John Singleton Copley portrayed in Watson and the Shark and Winslow Homer
portrayed in The Fog Warning, strike a sense of mystery and fear into the heart of the viewer. With
The Fog Warning, I wonder if the fisherman will meet his destination at the large vessel before the
looming ominous fog swallows him up. If the fisherman does not arrive at the large vessel within the
given time, he may be lost at sea forever. When I admire Watson and the Shark, I contemplate if the
blood running from the mouth of the shark (where it presumably previously attacked Watson) and also
pouring into the water (where Watson seems to have lost the bottom portion of his leg in an attack)
will be the final blood shared amongst the two. Will the sailors save Watson from the ferociousness of
the mighty beast or will he suffer a terrible fate and perish at sea? While both compositions allow for
mystery and contain a quite eerie sense of doom, the artists portrayed these stories through painting
them in quite opposite directions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Five Principles Of Retail
Building relationships with customers is basics step of success. Businesses spend millions trying to
attract new customers or win back lapsed ones and yet often neglect to develop their existing customer
relationships.
Successfully managing your customer relationships involves finding out about their purchasing habits,
their opinions and their preferences. Record their data and create profiles of individual customers.
Armed with this valuable information, marketing will become more effective and sales will increase.
Ask customers for information and feedback to create a complete picture. Customers sometimes need
to be asked more than once, so use multiple stages or complementary media. Dealing with complaints
properly can also teach a lot about the weaknesses in retail business. A retailer may also need to
rethink his operations to improve customer service and marketing. It s all about enhancing the
customer experience.
Five Principles of Retail
1. The customer is the most important person in a retailer s business: The customer holds the key to

The Theory And Factors Affecting Reaction Rates
Chemical Background Hydrogen peroxide is a by product of many reactions that occur within the
body however, it is toxic so needs to be broken down. The equation for this decomposition is as
follows: 〖2H〗_2 O_2 → 〖2H〗_2 O+ O_2 In the body, this reaction can be catalysed by the
enzyme catalase. Catalase is not removed or used up in this reaction, and speeds up the rate of
reaction. It is acting as a catalyst. The decomposition can be catalysed by other catalysts, however, and
this is the basis of my investigation. By using different catalysts, I can investigate how the rate of
reaction changes with each one and find out if catalase is the best catalyst for this decomposition. The
collision theory and factors affecting reaction rates For a reaction to take place, two particles must
collide with each other so they come in to contact. However, just colliding with each other does not
initiate a reaction. Something called the activation enthalpy must be overcome. The activation
enthalpy is the minimum (kinetic) energy required by a pair of molecules that are colliding before a
reaction can occur. So, for a reaction to take place, pairs of molecules must collide with enough energy
to equal or overcome the activation enthalpy. There are several factors that affect the rate of reaction
(three of which I am investigating). The factors are as follows: Concentration of reactants This factor
is explored in more depth in a later section. Temperature this factor is explored in

Robin Hood Cultural Influences
The story of Robin Hood, the famous archer and advocate for the poor, has been adapted into
hundreds of books, films, and television series. However, Robin Hood was not always depicted as a
beloved hero, stealing from the rich and redistributing to the poor. In fact, many early representations
of Robin Hood characterize him as a morally ambiguous, primarily self interested yeoman. Regardless
of the highly varying interpretations of the character, Robin Hood s adventures seem to resonate with
audiences through the ages and the narrative has no doubt had a profound impact on modern day

Robin Hood was Robert Hobbehod, a fugitive of the early 13th century. Sir J.C. Holt, an English

similarities between Hobbehod and the Robin Hood described in one of his earliest depictions, A Gest

class. If we are to point at all to a historical Robin, Hobbehod s claims are at present

Pro Choice Vs. Pro Life
Pro Choice vs. Pro Life: Abortion Should Remain Legal Jaelyn Evans Atlanta Metropolitan State
University The controversy surrounding abortion has been long debated since the Roe v Wade case
(1973) as pro life advocates and pro choice advocates go neck to neck on whether the process should
be banned or remain legal. According to APA (American Psychological Association), abortion is the
medical or surgical termination of a pregnancy and is one of the oldest, most common and most
controversial medical procedures . To be Pro Life means to be against the termination of a fetus; one
who is not in favor of the practice. Pro life advocates believe a woman should continue the pregnancy
and deliver the baby no matter the circumstance. Pro choice represents those who believe the woman
deserves a choice to carry the baby or have an abortion. Although the 1973 Roe vs Wade case
legalized abortion, abortion is still currently a much heated debate in America as the surgical
procedure is possibly on the verge of becoming illegalized. However, abortion should definitely
remain legal for various reasons such as individual freedom, victim protection, life opportunities,
failed contraception, and it is not fair for the government to make such crucial decisions for a woman s
life. Pro life advocates argue that personhood begins at conception, though quite contrarily, Sarah Fox

Module 5 Assignment ( A Presentation Sheet
Module 5 Assignment (a presentation sheet)
The observation of both animal and humans has revealed that mechanical ventilation can cause severe
lung injury if over distention occurs (Roupie et al., 1995). To make the matter even worse, the very
patients that need mechanical ventilation the most, patients with the acute respiratory distress
syndrome for example, are especially susceptible to over distention and therefore, lung injury (Stewart
et al., 1998). The main reason that patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome or respiratory
distress syndrome are in higher risk of lung injury is due to over distention, caused by reduced
numbers of alveoli as result of fluid buildup, consolidation, and atelectasis (Roupie et al., 1995).
Another group of patients which require challenging ventilation strategies are the preterm infants. The
lungs of preterm infants have undeveloped distal airway structures, with a thick air/blood barrier and a
small surface area for gas exchange (Wallace et al., 2009). They are most likely to be surfactant
deficient due to under developed epithelial cells which lack the type II alveolar cells (Wallace et al.,
2009). As a result, preterm infants often require respiratory support in the minutes following birth
(Roupie et al., 1995).
Although essential for survival, mechanical ventilation of preterm infants is closely associated with a
high risk of developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) (Wallace et al., 2009). Bronchopulmonary
dysplasia is

U.s. Counterintelligence And Covert Operations
U.S. Counterintelligence and Covert Operations
Counterintelligence (CI) involves actions aimed at protecting the United States against foreign
intelligence operations and espionage from penetration and disruption by hostile nations or their
intelligence services (Lowenthal, 2014). Three main components of Counterintelligence include
collection, defensive and offensive. Collection is ability to gather intelligence information about
rivalry capabilities against own nation; defensive part of CI involve measures to prevent and thwarting
other nations attempts to penetration into own nations intelligence system; while offensive deal with
running double agents to penetrate, manipulate, exploit, and control targeted adversaries. CI is said to
be the most essential aspect of the intelligence disciplines, in the sense that collecting vast quantities
of secret information and produce excellent analysis of the intelligence, but ineffective
counterintelligence measures may diminish confidence the final results (Van Cleave, 2013). According
to Federal Bureau of Investigation (2011) Significant advances have been made in clarifying and
rectifying intelligence gaps and requirements through the formation of liaison and working
relationships with other U.S. intelligence community agencies, foreign partners, the private sector, and
academia . For instance, since 2001, FBI CI program has resulted to total arrests of 249, of which 46

Questions The Necessity Of Free Will And Its Compatibility...
The fatalism framework assumes that human action is necessitated and therefore, it negates free will.
Fatalism questions the necessity of free will and its compatibility with divine foreknowledge. Much of
medieval philosophy returns to this question, attempting to reconcile these two seemingly conflicting
truths. The Law of Non Contradiction is one of logic s most fundamental ideas. It claims that
something can not be both true and not true. Under this law, no affirming statement can negate itself.
For example, an object cannot be both square and circular. They cannot exist within the same context
and so, a square circle is a contradiction. In Chapter 9 of De Interpretatione, Aristotle discusses the
problem of whether a sea battle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whichever is true, is true in the past. So, assuming there will be a sea battle tomorrow, it has always
been true that there will be a sea battle tomorrow. And because the past in unalterable, it implies that
human action has no ability to make a sea battle not happen tomorrow. Therefore, it is necessarily true
that there will be a sea battle tomorrow. Augustine says, in Free Choice of the Will, that divine
foreknowledge creates a necessity that is problematic for free will:
God has divine foreknowledge of everything in the future; and we sin by the will, not by necessity?
For, you say, if God foreknows that someone is going to sin, then it is necessary that he sin. But if it is
necessary, the will has no choice about whether to sin; there is an inescapable and fixed necessity.
This brings up a significant issue. This argument claims that actions are determined rather than open
to human action. If actions occur by necessity, human beings should not be blamed for their actions.
This suggests that God is responsible for the actions of man. This also requires that God is responsible
for evil. However, he is not the cause of evil. God gives man the ability to will but does not necessitate
what he wills. However, humans are still responsible for what they will because the thing that is willed
is not of necessity. For example, Augustine in his Confessions, tells the story when he stole

Cappuccino In San Francisco
To determine just how expensive a cappuccino was in San Francisco, I sampled cappuccino prices at

statistic corresponding with 99%, 2.576, and added/subtracted that value from the point estimate,

It is possible, albeit unlikely, that the prices shown on these cafe s websites is different from the prices

Cappuccino sizes are not standardized, so I tried to pick the smallest size whenever possible, which
varied from Small at most cafes to Tall at Starbucks to 12 oz at other institutions. In order to provide a
basis for equal comparison, I should have ensured that the cappuccinos in the population had the same
price in liquid ounces. Additionally, some coffee shops such as Starbucks include tax in the prices
listed on their menus, whereas others do not. The combined effect of the methodological problems and
sampling biases leads me to conclude that my sample is most likely biased. Since confidence intervals
are usually centered around sample means, which are supposed to be equal to the population means,
there is evidence to believe that the constructed confidence interval contains the population mean
despite the fact that it is most likely biased. First of all, the coffee shops I sampled are quite
representative of San Francisco coffee shops by general price. Most of the coffee shops sampled were

statement on evaluation form was to measure the enjoyment level of participants after taking a whole
semester of the boring class. The independent t test showed that there was a significant difference
between how conventional and creative group responded to taking the class was a waste of time .
Participants in creative group (M = 2.94, SD = .97) scored significantly higher than participants in
conventional group (M = 2.25, SD = .86, t(31) = 2.17, p = .038).Also independent t test showed a
significant difference between creative and conventional responses to I did not gain any useful

As shown in the result section, the ANOVA test showed that there was no significant relationship
between individuals attachment styles and openness to new experiences with how much they enjoyed
taking the class. Another part of the study focused on how people in different conditions would enjoy
the forced task differently. The independent t test results, mentioned in result section, showed that
participants in creative condition reported less enjoyment than participants in conventional condition.
To be specific, participants in creative group scored higher (than conventional group) in the statement;
taking the class was a waste of time , which means they found the class was a waste of time, therefore,
they did not enjoy the class. Also, participants in creative condition scored higher (than conventional
group) in I did not gain any useful knowledge from taking this class which means they developed a
more negative perspective towards the class. Furthermore, participants in the creative group reported
that they did not benefit from taking the class so it means the conventional participants found the class
more enjoyable and beneficial. All these significant findings suggest that the overall class enjoyment

Licenses are signed for a different time periods. Licensing agreements are subject to negotiation and
they vary from company to company and from industry to industry. A major disadvantage of licensing
is the company s dependence on the local licensee to generate revenues and, thus, royalties, usually
paid as a percentage on sales volume only. Another disadvantage is the resulting uncertainty of
product quality.
Franchising Its a special form of licensing in which the franchiser makes a total marketing program
available, including the brand name, logo, products, and method of operation.
Many companies find it to their advantage to manufacture locally instead of supplying the particular
market with products made elsewhere. Numerous factors such as laws, political considerations, local
costs, tariifs and market size may affect a choice to manufacture locally, so it requires fair amount of
attention before making a final decision. The local production may be contract manufacturing,

Social Classes In America Essay
The United States is often seen by many as a country of equal opportunity. A place where social
classes do not exist. Unfortunately, thoughts such as these are wrong because the US is far from being
the only country to escape this exception. When observed closely there are signs that each person
manifests that distinctively show what social class they belong to. Although money is the most
common marker of class, education along with health related topics such as heart disease and eating
habits are strong inicators of class. Throughout time one of the most obvious class markers has been
education and it still remains so. People who belong to the higher classes view education as a higher
priority and have more access to the best school in the country. When stuck in lower classes people
must attend schools where books, computers, and education are not found at the same level. An article
in the Atantic Times mentions that Kids who belong to lower social classes fell behind children in the
upper classes by about a year or so. Today, that gap is close to four years. For those in the upper class
their kids are placed in an abundance of classes from an early age such as foreign language, art, and
many sports. Children who are in lower classes have no way of getting a head start when compared to
children in higher classes Sarah Garland also mentions how When children have plenty of time to
build social skills and bigger vocabularies in short term reduce their chances of

A Trip On Vacation With Other People s Families
Going on vacation with other people s families was not foreign to me. I had gone on beach trips three
times before Hot Springs. Therefore, I was used to going on trips without my own family, but this trip
was very different. This trip was nothing like the other trips I had gone on. This one would would
introduce me to more people than I can even count. Marjorie Ann, Lilly, and I have been my nickels
for about a year now. I call them my nickels for reason I honestly cannot remember, but it has stuck.
We were brought together by our brunette hair since we carry the dominant genes in our larger friend
group. About two weeks before the fourth of July, I was at home depot when Lilly Hunter texted
Marjorie and I about our plans for the upcoming holiday. She wanted us to come with her to Hot
Springs, Arkansas for her great grandmother s 99th birthday hoorah. We both quickly replied eagerly
letting her know we would come. Marjorie Ann had been at the beach, I had been at the beach, and
Lilly had been at home in Oxford. We had not seen each other for about two weeks. Lilly Hunter is not
a good person when it comes to letting you know information about a trip. Marjorie and I had to
almost literally pull the information out of her. We finally received details about the trip such as what
to wear, bring, where we would be staying, and who would be there. A couple day later, we were
piling into Mrs. Sloan s car. Mrs. Sloan is Lilly s mom and is one of the most hospitable people I

Donald Trump s Ineligibility In The United States
If Donald Trump s plans were ever implemented, the country would sink into a prolonged recession,
said former GOP nominee Mitt Romney (Cary). By saying this Romney is trying to convey his strong
belief on Trump s ineligibility to be the president of the United States. The debate on this political
issue has been going on since the presidential campaign started last year. While it is true that he won
the presidential election, many Americans are still questioning if he s the right person for their country
or not. They have been considering both his personal and professional life. From his relationships to
his success. Some say that his ties with other countries can be very beneficial, while others disagree
due to his lack of political experience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That he has great negotiating skills, which would help America get its way with other countries.
However, these reasons that claim that his business skills are enough are overlooking the fact that
Trump has a long list of business troubles as stated in the article Donald Trump s Many Business
Failures, Explained . This article also stated that lost contracts, bankruptcies, deceptions and
indifference to bankers are only a few of the troubles in Trump s business life. Also, his net worth isn t
accurate either, as he himself admitted that he based his net worths off his own feelings which often
ended up being wrong (Eichenwald). And as a man who doesn t have any political experience nor a
good or honest history it s almost impossible to say that he knows how to get things done and could

Enhancing Critical Thinking Skills
Critical thinking is a skill that can be developed by learning over time. Using critical thinking is about
having the ability to comprehend and push for answers. It works best with a positive attitude, and a
will to learn (Bethel University, 2013). The article I read was a study to improve your critical thinking
and writing skills. They used a series of writing assignments over a 10 week period, starting with
simple writing assignments, ending with ones that were more formal to push your critical thinking,
thus improving your writing skills (Varelas, Wolfe, Ialongo, 2015). By the end of this exercise, the
student s critical thinking and writing had improved significantly. They were able to interpret and
enhance discussions with more clarity

Abel s Proof Of The Insolvability Of Algebra
Niels Henrik is perhaps the greatest mathematician to have come from Norway. Though his father was
a philosophy teacher, he and Abel s mother managed to acquire a large amount of debt due to
scrupulous spending. Thus, much of Abel s youth was spent well acquainted in poverty. His poverty
continued to adulthood when his father died, and his studies had to be supported by his professors and
through the Norwegian government. Before his university, he was granted a fellowship to travel and
study and Europe, and the year and a half which he spent in Germany, Italy, and France was one of the
happiest periods in his life. Yet, upon return to Norway, Abel could only attain temporary positions.
The last years of his life were beset by many difficulties, but it was during this period of poverty and
struggle that he developed his most famous proof of the insolvability of the quintic function. Though
he died tragically young at twenty seven, before any recognition, by tuberculosis, he left a bountiful
legacy for mathematics. It was not until his death that the world became aware of his genius, for his
proof of the insolvability of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though the function had in origins in Babylonian and Arabic times, the cubic and quartic equations
had been solved by 1600 by the Italians Cardano and Ferrari, respectively. Thus, following this line of
thought, it seemed likely that the quintic equation could be solved through rational operations and
extraction of the fifth root. Yet, despite much effort of from some of the best mathematicians in the
world of the time, no solution was found for over two and one half centuries, and the seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries witnessed a multitude of ineffectual attempts at solve the general equation of fifth
degree by radicals. Abel had thought he found a rational resolution in school, but after reexamination,

Why Death Is Accepted As A Natural Part Of The Process Essay
Similarly, a study taken from the International Journal of Older People Nursing shows that that in one
third of the cases, nursing staff members who were caring for residents who died with dementia
reported that they experienced what they perceived as a high emotional burden (Albers, Block,
Stichele 2013). Healthcare workers in another study reported feelings of guilt and moral dilemma
regarding patient deaths (Dwyer, Hansebo, Andershed, and Ternestedt 2009). In this same study it is
important to note that the participants acknowledged that death is accepted as a natural part of the
process, however it was the circumstances under which the residents died and the employees
employee s feelings of personal responsibility for meeting individualized needs of the residents that
upset the employees the most. Most caretakers enter enters the profession due to a desire help others,
and it is inevitable that they form bonds with the residents they care for. This feeling of responsibility
coupled with the sheer frequency of experiencing the death of residents they care for can in turn
generate depressive symptoms.
What Is Not Currently Known About Depression and Healthcare Workers
Though studies have been done regarding the prevalence of depression among nursing home and
palliative care residents, little has been formed on the healthcare workers that come in contact with
them. As the above referenced study from the journal Palliative Medicine puts it, There has been a

Choice And Agency In The Matrix Trilogy
As Dr. Mike Sosteric sagaciously suggests, the Matrix trilogy is a comprehensive metaphor for
modern capitalistic society (Sosteric, 2015). In the simplest discernment, the Matrix trilogy reveals
that the mass majority is either unaware of, or indifferent to, the extent that they are controlled by the
uppermost in society. Furthermore, the concepts put forth in the Matrix trilogy relate to a multitude of
the concepts introduced specifically in this unit, and the course in its entirety. These concepts include,
but are not limited to, agency, choice, power, propaganda, resistance, mobilization, demobilization,
ideology, and religion.
To begin with, regarding choice and agency, one part of the Matrix that resonates with me is when the

  • 3. Literary Techniques Used In Beowulf In the epic poem Beowulf , Beowulf himself used a variety of unique and smart methods and ways to win and defeat the monster s that tormented Herrot. One method he used to defeat and kill one of his enemies was with the element of surprise and with no weapon. Another method he used to defeat and kill another one of his enemies was by going in right through the front door of the enemy s lair. His method to that was originally thought of to kill his last enemy didn t work out so well and had to get help from a loyal and brave warrior, Wiglaf. Beowulf was constantly changing his methods and strategy s to win the battles and obstacles that he was confronted with. One method Beowulf used, to find and kill Grendel, was with the element of surprise and with his bare hands. Beowulf s method and plan to kill Grendel was to lure him to him, surprise Grendel, and finally, attack and kill Grendel. Beowulf lured in Grendel by staying in the Mead Hall, where he knew Grendel would search for something to kill. Then, to get Grendel distracted, he sacrificed one of his own warriors to get eaten so Grendel would have his focus on the warrior he was eating and murdering. Finally, when Beowulf saw the perfect time to attack and kill Grendel, he took it. Beowulf s method of luring and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. Project #2 Project #2 Conic Sections Conic sections are the various gemetric figures created by the interection of a plane. They are among the oldest curves in history and is one of the oldest area of study for mathmaticians. conics were discovered by Menaechmus (c. 375 325 BC), a Greek pupil of Plato and Exodus. He was trying to solve the famous problem duplicating a cube. Euclid studied them and Appollonius reinforced and expanded previous results of conics into a book he named Conic Sections. It is a series of eight books with 487 propositions. He applied his findings to the study of planetary motion and it was used to advance the development of Greek astronomy. It is because of Appollonius that the name ellipse, parabola, and hyperbole were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In some cases, the circle is listed as a fourth conic. A circle is really a unique ellipse. Conics have very unique features. For instance curves can also be defined using a straight line, the directrix, and a point called the focus. If you measure the distance from the focus to a point on the curve, and perpendicularly from the directrix to that point. The two distances will always be the same ratio for an ellipse the ratio is less than 1, for a parabola the ratio is 1, and for a hyperbola the ratio is greater than 1. These ratios are known as the eccentricity, so we can say that any conic section is all points whose distance to the focus is equal to the eccentricity times the distance to the directrix. A circle has an eccentricity of zero, an ellipse has an eccentricity between 0 and 1, a parabola has an eccentricity of 1, and a hyperbola has an eccentricity greater than 1. Ellipse is known by its focal definition: it s a locus of all points P in the plane the sum of whose distances from two fixed points F1 and F2, the foci, has a constant value. The Belgian mathematician G. P. Dandelin in 1822 gave a beautiful proof of a conic section is a finite shape then it is always an ellipse. First imagine a huge sphere S1 inside a cone. Let the sphere be so big as to not touch the cutting plane. Assume it touches the cone over the circle k1. Shrink the sphere S1 (suck it into the cone) until it touches the plane at point F1. ... • 6. My Career Path For A Teacher On October 21, 2015 my cooperating teacher mocked me in front of my class. You see I was the student teacher in a second grade classroom at Charles Olbon Elementary School. After class I went home, locked myself in my bedroom and I started pondering my future and my career path. I thought I would not be a good teacher, why did I choose this career path? I choose this path because my friends and family saw me a teacher, but I guess they do not know the real me. In 2003 at the age of ten years old I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. My father saw me down at the kitchen table and strongly advised me to go into an easy profession. He instructed me to become a teacher, therefore I mindlessly agreed to his requests. Then when I entered college, I did not enjoy the teaching classes and I told my friends, family, and fellow teachers. However everyone told me the similar line: you will make a great teacher, you re just nervous cause you re almost graduating, just stick it out and get your degree. I listened to others while ignoring my inner voice and passion. Now fast forward to October 23 25th I ended up skipping student teaching to go into the city for Robert McKee s Story and Storynomics seminar class. I consider myself a happy go lucky person who is a positive thinker and dreamer however on this particular day when my mom dropped me off at the bus station I was in a depressed state of mind. • 9. Character Analysis Of A Room With A View Claire Conti AP Literature Mrs. Scruggs 29 August 2017 A Room With A View Lucy is a young woman born and raised in 19th century England, when the country was in its prime. England was the world power, causing it to be extremely wealthy and a safe place to live. Lucy and her aunt go on vacation to Italy, and her eyes are opened to a whole other world. During the time, Italy was a scummy city where the poor lived, but she is able to discover herself while vacationing there. Within Italy, she finds love, adventure and exhilaration that she could never experience in her homeland. In A Room with a View by E. M. Foster, Lucy s character is dynamically developed from uptight and predictable to full of adventure and excitement as she travels between the prime and proper England to the dirty and unkempt Italy. England is clean, neat and boring, which makes Lucy predictable and boring due to the structured life she is forced to live. The buildings within the city of London are simply lackluster in both looks and character. As Lucy gazes upon a meadow, she notices how pretty cottages lined it on two sides, and the upper and third side was occupied by a new stone church, expensively simple (82). There is no exciting architecture in England, but everything is very old and very expensive. The diction used to describe the buildings and the city illustrates how archaically beautiful England is, but highlights how humdrum it becomes it Lucy. Then, when she returns from Italy, she is ... • 11. The Possibility Of Evil Short Story We all like to look at things that appeal to us. But sometimes appearances can deceive us: such as a good deal going online until you re ready to pay and they hit you with shipping and handling taxes and therefore raising the price dramatically. Or a movie that has a good trailer but once you watch it as a result the movie was not as good as it appeared to be. It s good to notice the bigger picture and to analyze it in more depth, rather than judge it but it s first sight. The main characters in the short stories Lamb to the Slaughter , by Roald Dahl, The Possibility of Evil , by Shirley Jackson, could have adapted from this lesson. In Lamb to the Slaughter Mrs. Maloney is this sweet, loving and caring wife who loves her husband dearly, but once he came back from work he hit her with heartbreaking and bad news: which sets her off. In The Possibility of Evil Miss Strangeworth appears to be this kind and respected elderly lady, but behind close doors she is completely different. Just because we see something to appear to be good doesn t mean that it can t reveal it s true colors in a blink of an eye. Or that it could be the total opposite of your initial though. Compare And Contrast Twilight And The Vampire Diaries Twilight Movie Series Versus The Vampire Diaries Television Series It is an extraordinary thing to meet someone who you can bare your soul to and accept you for what you are , this is a quote from Edward Cullen in the movie Twilight. The Twilight movie series focuses on Bella and Edward s love life and what it entails. These movies came out from 2008 2012. In 2009 the CW came out with the hit television series The Vampire Diaries, which focuses on Elena Gilbert and her life along with the Salvatore brothers. Both series originated from a book series and have been a popular source of entertainment for years. The Twilight movie series and The Vampire Diaries television series both have similarities and differences that revolve around the main characters, content, and story line. First, to compare and contrast Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, the main characters need to be analyzed. Bella Swan and Edward Cullen are the main characters in the Twilight movies, while Elena Gilbert and Stefan and Damon Salvatore are the main characters in The Vampire Diaries. Both Elena and Bella are humans at the beginning of each series and fall in love with a vampire. However, the similarities between the two female characters end there. • 13. Figurative Language In A Devil In The White City Have you ever known a psychopath who finds pleasure of going around and murdering thousands of people? In Erik Larson s nonfiction novel, A Devil in the White City, published in 2003, he sets the scene around the World s Fair in Chicago. During this time, the city preoccupies themselves with the new construction and excitement of the fair that it draws away attention from the rather secretive, sly, serial killer, H.H. Holmes. Larson uses figurative language, imagery, and juxtaposition throughout the entire novel to develop just how sinister natured Holmes truly is. Throughout his novel, Erik Larson uses figurative language to reference the iniquitous, hidden personality displayed in Holmes. For example, the office building where Holmes portrays his work is similar to an empty space, where the gaslight [cannot] reach (Larson 166) it fully, which evokes the feelings of loneliness and detachment in the reader s mind. Holmes is never bothered with while working and he often does his work solemnly in the dark, so nobody is able to watch him, allowing the reader to see just how closed off he truly is. He then continues to show the reader Holmes more demented side by alluding to Jack the Ripper s killings relating to the strokes of Van Gogh s paintings. The way Holmes [slashes people s] throat (Larson 70) illustrates how Holmes sees murder as graceful, like each killing is a new piece of art. By comparing Holmes to Jack the Ripper, it paints a vivid image in the reader s head ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

George had instructed Lennie to hide in a secure spot where only the two of them knew. After Lennie killed Curley s wife, this is what he did. After waiting in hiding at the location for some time, George showed up, and ultimately had to shoot Lennie. George did this because he loved lennie. He knew that Curley was on his way, and that he was armed. If Lennie had fallen into Curley s hands, I am almost 100% positive that he would have suffered at Curley s hand. He would have died slowly, and painfully. George loved Lennie so much, that he took matters into his own hands, and killed Lennie. When reading this part, some of my classmates were against what George had done. But I see why. I look at it this way. If I had someone who I loved, I would save them, and sacrifice my own freedom. If anyone did what George did in today s time, they would be sent to jail. But if you really truly did love that person, the sacrifice would be worth it. The choices that both Lennie and George made in the final chapters of the book reflect their character. Lennie was a giant of a man, with immense physical strength, but very little mental strength. He could be describe as a gentle giant , for lack of a better phrase. He did have several incidents where his strength got the best of him, but he was a tender, kind man, even though he had the physical capability to harm almost anyone with ease. George is an able bodied man, who could be on his own, working to achieve his dream of owning his own land. However, he instead chooses to stay with Lennie, and look after him the best that he can. • 16. Why You Should Not Stand Without A Thesis In the same way that a house, gorgeously designed and elegantly decorated as it may be, cannot stand without a solid foundation, so can a college essay not stand without a thesis statement. Of course, facts and the way in which they are presented are vital to whatever point a writer is trying to make, but without a central foundation to link the arguments, all one can hope to present is a collection of various points jumbled together in an futile attempt to grasp some sense of reason. A thesis is precisely that foundation; a crucial statement that tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper , according to Writing Center. Since the thesis presents the central arguments of an essay, it must be corroborated by the rest of the author s work, otherwise it will not suffice to convince a professor of the matters it addresses. In addition to being the cornerstone of the essay, Aims says that a thesis states why the essay is important and worth reading . Certainly, a thesis may be well constructed to inform the reader about the subject of the paper. However, if it is not captivating and fails to provide the reader with a good reason as to why he or she should spend their time learning about the matters of the essay, the writer has already made a fatal flaw since the reader will begin the essay uninterested. ... I mean, being the crash site for the second wave of aliens on earth can earn quite the reputation, and what are the odds I would be working there that very day? Well, to understand my position entirely, we need to go back to the beginning. In 1939, the U.S. declared itself a neutral country in the European conflict that would come to be known as World War II. In 1941, Franklin Roosevelt became the first and only president elected for three terms. Later that year, Japan attacked the U.S. at Pearl Harbor. These events spiraled into the earth changing event that was the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Many scientists believe this to be the event that caused the Invasion, as it sent some sort of radioactive wave throughout the galaxy. Although people tend to may disagree with each other, there was no doubt that it was a devastating blow to the entire world. The Roswell crash in 1947 was the first contact we had with any species not from Earth. Although the creature didn t survive long enough to greet us, it seems it was alive long enough to send a distress signal, calling the rest of its friends. The Theory And Factors Affecting Reaction Rates Chemical Background Hydrogen peroxide is a by product of many reactions that occur within the body however, it is toxic so needs to be broken down. The equation for this decomposition is as follows: 〖2H〗_2 O_2 → 〖2H〗_2 O+ O_2 In the body, this reaction can be catalysed by the enzyme catalase. Catalase is not removed or used up in this reaction, and speeds up the rate of reaction. It is acting as a catalyst. The decomposition can be catalysed by other catalysts, however, and this is the basis of my investigation. By using different catalysts, I can investigate how the rate of reaction changes with each one and find out if catalase is the best catalyst for this decomposition. The collision theory and factors affecting reaction rates For a reaction to take place, two particles must collide with each other so they come in to contact. However, just colliding with each other does not initiate a reaction. Something called the activation enthalpy must be overcome. The activation enthalpy is the minimum (kinetic) energy required by a pair of molecules that are colliding before a reaction can occur. So, for a reaction to take place, pairs of molecules must collide with enough energy to equal or overcome the activation enthalpy. There are several factors that affect the rate of reaction (three of which I am investigating). The factors are as follows: Concentration of reactants This factor is explored in more depth in a later section. Temperature this factor is explored in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pro Life Pro Choice vs. Pro Life: Abortion Should Remain Legal Jaelyn Evans Atlanta Metropolitan State University The controversy surrounding abortion has been long debated since the Roe v Wade case (1973) as pro life advocates and pro choice advocates go neck to neck on whether the process should be banned or remain legal. According to APA (American Psychological Association), abortion is the medical or surgical termination of a pregnancy and is one of the oldest, most common and most controversial medical procedures . To be Pro Life means to be against the termination of a fetus; one who is not in favor of the practice. Pro life advocates believe a woman should continue the pregnancy and deliver the baby no matter the circumstance. Pro choice represents those who believe the woman deserves a choice to carry the baby or have an abortion. Although the 1973 Roe vs Wade case legalized abortion, abortion is still currently a much heated debate in America as the surgical procedure is possibly on the verge of becoming illegalized. However, abortion should definitely remain legal for various reasons such as individual freedom, victim protection, life opportunities, failed contraception, and it is not fair for the government to make such crucial decisions for a woman s life. • 35. Module 5 Assignment ( A Presentation Sheet Module 5 Assignment (a presentation sheet) The observation of both animal and humans has revealed that mechanical ventilation can cause severe lung injury if over distention occurs (Roupie et al., 1995). To make the matter even worse, the very patients that need mechanical ventilation the most, patients with the acute respiratory distress syndrome for example, are especially susceptible to over distention and therefore, lung injury (Stewart et al., 1998). The main reason that patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome or respiratory distress syndrome are in higher risk of lung injury is due to over distention, caused by reduced numbers of alveoli as result of fluid buildup, consolidation, and atelectasis (Roupie et al., 1995). Another group of patients which require challenging ventilation strategies are the preterm infants. The lungs of preterm infants have undeveloped distal airway structures, with a thick air/blood barrier and a small surface area for gas exchange (Wallace et al., 2009). They are most likely to be surfactant deficient due to under developed epithelial cells which lack the type II alveolar cells (Wallace et al., 2009). As a result, preterm infants often require respiratory support in the minutes following birth (Roupie et al., 1995). • 39. Questions The Necessity Of Free Will And Its Compatibility... The fatalism framework assumes that human action is necessitated and therefore, it negates free will. Fatalism questions the necessity of free will and its compatibility with divine foreknowledge. Much of medieval philosophy returns to this question, attempting to reconcile these two seemingly conflicting truths. The Law of Non Contradiction is one of logic s most fundamental ideas. It claims that something can not be both true and not true. Under this law, no affirming statement can negate itself. For example, an object cannot be both square and circular. They cannot exist within the same context and so, a square circle is a contradiction. In Chapter 9 of De Interpretatione, Aristotle discusses the problem of whether a sea battle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whichever is true, is true in the past. So, assuming there will be a sea battle tomorrow, it has always been true that there will be a sea battle tomorrow. And because the past in unalterable, it implies that human action has no ability to make a sea battle not happen tomorrow. Therefore, it is necessarily true that there will be a sea battle tomorrow. Augustine says, in Free Choice of the Will, that divine foreknowledge creates a necessity that is problematic for free will: God has divine foreknowledge of everything in the future; and we sin by the will, not by necessity? For, you say, if God foreknows that someone is going to sin, then it is necessary that he sin. But if it is necessary, the will has no choice about whether to sin; there is an inescapable and fixed necessity. This brings up a significant issue. This argument claims that actions are determined rather than open to human action. If actions occur by necessity, human beings should not be blamed for their actions. This suggests that God is responsible for the actions of man. This also requires that God is responsible for evil. However, he is not the cause of evil. God gives man the ability to will but does not necessitate what he wills. However, humans are still responsible for what they will because the thing that is willed is not of necessity. To construct a 99% confidence interval for this sample, I multiplied the standard error by the z statistic corresponding with 99%, 2.576, and added/subtracted that value from the point estimate, $3.54. The resultant confidence interval was [$2.13, $4.96]. In other words, if I continued sampling cappuccino coffee prices and creating unique samples of sufficient size, both including and not including the coffee shops already sampled, 99% of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is possible, albeit unlikely, that the prices shown on these cafe s websites is different from the prices they actually sell cappuccinos at. I also failed to correct for inconsistencies in cappuccino prices. Cappuccino sizes are not standardized, so I tried to pick the smallest size whenever possible, which varied from Small at most cafes to Tall at Starbucks to 12 oz at other institutions. In order to provide a basis for equal comparison, I should have ensured that the cappuccinos in the population had the same price in liquid ounces. Additionally, some coffee shops such as Starbucks include tax in the prices listed on their menus, whereas others do not. The combined effect of the methodological problems and sampling biases leads me to conclude that my sample is most likely biased. Since confidence intervals are usually centered around sample means, which are supposed to be equal to the population means, there is evidence to believe that the constructed confidence interval contains the population mean despite the fact that it is most likely biased. First of all, the coffee shops I sampled are quite representative of San Francisco coffee shops by general price. Most of the coffee shops sampled were within the inexpensive to moderate price range as described by Yelp, which is quite representative of coffee shop prices in San ... The independent t test results, mentioned in result section, showed that participants in creative condition reported less enjoyment than participants in conventional condition. To be specific, participants in creative group scored higher (than conventional group) in the statement; taking the class was a waste of time , which means they found the class was a waste of time, therefore, they did not enjoy the class. Also, participants in creative condition scored higher (than conventional group) in I did not gain any useful knowledge from taking this class which means they developed a more negative perspective towards the class. Furthermore, participants in the creative group reported that they did not benefit from taking the class so it means the conventional participants found the class more enjoyable and beneficial. Licensing agreements are subject to negotiation and they vary from company to company and from industry to industry. A major disadvantage of licensing is the company s dependence on the local licensee to generate revenues and, thus, royalties, usually paid as a percentage on sales volume only. Another disadvantage is the resulting uncertainty of product quality. Franchising Its a special form of licensing in which the franchiser makes a total marketing program available, including the brand name, logo, products, and method of operation. Many companies find it to their advantage to manufacture locally instead of supplying the particular market with products made elsewhere. • 44. Social Classes In America Essay The United States is often seen by many as a country of equal opportunity. A place where social classes do not exist. Unfortunately, thoughts such as these are wrong because the US is far from being the only country to escape this exception. When observed closely there are signs that each person manifests that distinctively show what social class they belong to. Although money is the most common marker of class, education along with health related topics such as heart disease and eating habits are strong inicators of class. Throughout time one of the most obvious class markers has been education and it still remains so. People who belong to the higher classes view education as a higher priority and have more access to the best school in the country. When stuck in lower classes people must attend schools where books, computers, and education are not found at the same level. An article in the Atantic Times mentions that Kids who belong to lower social classes fell behind children in the upper classes by about a year or so. Today, that gap is close to four years. For those in the upper class their kids are placed in an abundance of classes from an early age such as foreign language, art, and many sports. Children who are in lower classes have no way of getting a head start when compared to children in higher classes Sarah Garland also mentions how When children have plenty of time to build social skills and bigger vocabularies in short term reduce their chances of ... • 45. A Trip On Vacation With Other People s Families Going on vacation with other people s families was not foreign to me. I had gone on beach trips three times before Hot Springs. Therefore, I was used to going on trips without my own family, but this trip was very different. This trip was nothing like the other trips I had gone on. This one would would introduce me to more people than I can even count. Marjorie Ann, Lilly, and I have been my nickels for about a year now. I call them my nickels for reason I honestly cannot remember, but it has stuck. We were brought together by our brunette hair since we carry the dominant genes in our larger friend group. About two weeks before the fourth of July, I was at home depot when Lilly Hunter texted Marjorie and I about our plans for the upcoming holiday. She wanted us to come with her to Hot Springs, Arkansas for her great grandmother s 99th birthday hoorah. We both quickly replied eagerly letting her know we would come. Marjorie Ann had been at the beach, I had been at the beach, and Lilly had been at home in Oxford. We had not seen each other for about two weeks. Lilly Hunter is not a good person when it comes to letting you know information about a trip. Marjorie and I had to almost literally pull the information out of her. We finally received details about the trip such as what to wear, bring, where we would be staying, and who would be there. A couple day later, we were piling into Mrs. Sloan s car. Mrs. Sloan is Lilly s mom and is one of the most hospitable people I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. Abel s Proof Of The Insolvability Of Algebra Niels Henrik is perhaps the greatest mathematician to have come from Norway. Though his father was a philosophy teacher, he and Abel s mother managed to acquire a large amount of debt due to scrupulous spending. Thus, much of Abel s youth was spent well acquainted in poverty. His poverty continued to adulthood when his father died, and his studies had to be supported by his professors and through the Norwegian government. Before his university, he was granted a fellowship to travel and study and Europe, and the year and a half which he spent in Germany, Italy, and France was one of the happiest periods in his life. Yet, upon return to Norway, Abel could only attain temporary positions. The last years of his life were beset by many difficulties, but it was during this period of poverty and struggle that he developed his most famous proof of the insolvability of the quintic function. • 49. Why Death Is Accepted As A Natural Part Of The Process Essay Similarly, a study taken from the International Journal of Older People Nursing shows that that in one third of the cases, nursing staff members who were caring for residents who died with dementia reported that they experienced what they perceived as a high emotional burden (Albers, Block, Stichele 2013). Healthcare workers in another study reported feelings of guilt and moral dilemma regarding patient deaths (Dwyer, Hansebo, Andershed, and Ternestedt 2009). In this same study it is important to note that the participants acknowledged that death is accepted as a natural part of the process, however it was the circumstances under which the residents died and the employees employee s feelings of personal responsibility for meeting individualized needs of the residents that upset the employees the most. Most caretakers enter enters the profession due to a desire help others, and it is inevitable that they form bonds with the residents they care for. This feeling of responsibility coupled with the sheer frequency of experiencing the death of residents they care for can in turn generate depressive symptoms. What Is Not Currently Known About Depression and Healthcare Workers Though studies have been done regarding the prevalence of depression among nursing home and palliative care residents, little has been formed on the healthcare workers that come in contact with them. In the simplest discernment, the Matrix trilogy reveals that the mass majority is either unaware of, or indifferent to, the extent that they are controlled by the uppermost in society. Furthermore, the concepts put forth in the Matrix trilogy relate to a multitude of the concepts introduced specifically in this unit, and the course in its entirety. These concepts include, but are not limited to, agency, choice, power, propaganda, resistance, mobilization, demobilization, ideology, and religion.
