Themes In A Separate Peace
Many young adults try to play pretend to avoid their reality. When school or friendships build up they
may become difficult to deal with. In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, some of the
students of the Devon School try to escape their lives to create new ones in their imagination. Gene
thinks of excuses and others stop believing in the world that they are living in. The war makes most of
the kids create delusions about themselves and the others around them. The theme, one s internal war
is derived from external struggles, is demonstrated when Gene cannot face his delusions about Finny,
Leper s brain pulls tricks on itself, and Finny trying to make himself no longer believe in the war.
Gene believes that everyone is out to get him including his best friend. Gene is one of the top students
in his class but by the drop in his grade says otherwise. When Gene starts failing his tests, Finny

Finny has a broken leg after falling off a tree into a lake because Gene jounced the limb. The recovery
for Finny s leg is a long process and the doctor said he will never be able to enlist in the war or even
play sports again. Finny s only dreams are to enlist in the war and go to the Olympics, but that is all
stolen from him. Finny tries to hide the truth from himself about the war when he thinks that the
politicians have made it all up (115). He does not want to think that he will never be able to participate
in his dream because of a broken leg. Finny s theory about the war all being a setup helps him forget
that he actually will not be able to compete in the Olympics or fight for his country. His war inside of
himself trying to hide his pain in not doing what he loves is all influenced by his physical state and the
actions of his best friend. Finny has to deal with his broken leg and his feelings towards not going to

Baseball Problems
There s a problem coursing through baseball, and it goes well beyond Philadelphia Phillies manager
Gabe Kapler choosing which reliever to use by throwing a dart.
Attendance for Major League Baseball games is down 6.6 percent from this time last year, forecasting
the third straight season of decline. While the popular excuse is to blame the downturn on early season
washouts, Commissioner Rob Manfred recently told The Wall Street Journal he is concerned that there
s something to it more than weather.
In Philadelphia, attendance is actually up about three percent from 2017 to 24,855 per game. But
considering the Phils are currently 15 games improved over their 22 47 record a year ago, this is no
cause for smug satisfaction.
Manfred is correct, of course. The national pastime has systemic ... Show more content on

Three problems that I see, actually:
1. The sport has become too expensive While attending a Major League Baseball game remains
cheaper than watching other sports, it has moved out of the range where heading to the park can be an
impulse buy.
The average Phillies ticket this season costs $36, according to the data tracking company Statista.
While this is actually cheaper than last year, it still means that including parking, a few snacks, and a
souvenir a family of four s visit to the ballpark will be a $250 hit.
2. Baseball lacks identifiable superstars The NBA has LeBron James, Steph Curry, and many others
recognized just by their first name. The NFL has at least six quarterbacks famous to the world.
Baseball has . . . uhh.
Yes, Mike Trout is an amazing player. Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer may be all time greats.
But, alas, none has any kind of national or international standing. A recent ESPN study of the 100
most famous athletes in the world included zero baseball players.
We can fairly blame poor marketing, but the sport sorely needs players with the magnetic personalities
of Ken Griffey, Jr., Randy Johnson, and Big

My Work Ethic, Commitment For The Job And Facility, And My...
I will share my work ethic, commitment to the job and facility, and my values. This includes: being
accountable to the job, showing up on time with a positive attitude, willingly take on tasks and
assignments, being proud of our facility and that we are a part of it, treating everyone with respect and
in a friendly manner, focusing on work and leaving personal issues outside the workplace, and seeing
my work as an opportunity for continuous personal growth and lifelong learning. There is a concept
called The Self Fulfilling Prophecy which states that people generally will perform in the way others
expect them to perform. So, if I have high expectations for staff, I will treat them as if they are
capable, competent people and I will expect them to function as such. However, if I micromanage
them, this means I think they cannot function well on their own. This is not the behavior I want. I will
have high expectations for staff and treat them accordingly. I will give credit for successes to coaches,
and take responsibility when things do not go well. As the athletic director it is my job to make sure
staff is well trained, capable, and competent. If for some reason they fail to perform their job in the
expected manner, it is my responsibility to insure that they receive further direction and training so
they will perform up to standards. I can help improve the knowledge and teaching skill level of
coaches by making staff evaluations a positive experience. One

Essay Use of Ability Grouping
Use of Ability Grouping
How widespread is ability grouping? No reliable national surveys of ability grouping in elementary
schools have been conducted, but a consistent picture emerges from several local studies. According to
the article Ability Group Effects: Instructional, Social, or Institutional?, (Pallas, 1994) ability grouping
for reading instruction appears nearly universal, especially in the early grades. Schools seek to create
teachable groups of children within classes containing a broad range of skills, from students who
independently breeze through children s novels to those who have yet to learn basic letter sounds.
Ability grouping in math is less frequent and only in the upper grades, but remains rare at the
elementary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once students are grouped, they generally stay at that level for their school careers, and the gap
between achievement and levels becomes exaggerated over time. The notion that students
achievement levels at any given time will predict their achievement in the future becomes a self
fulfilling prophecy (Slavin, 1990). Wheelock doesn t dismiss all forms of ability grouping. For
example, a group might be set up within a class to help students who are having difficulty with a
specific skill, or a group might be formed to pre teach a skill to a group of students who might have
difficulty grasping a concept.
Advocates
Those that support ability grouping in schools argue that it is not just gifted and talented students that
benefit from this practice. Although students benefit slightly from ability grouping even when course
content is not altered, they could gain much more when the curriculum is adjusted to suit their
academic needs, according to Mary Ann Swiatek (1997). Swiatek argues, students with mathematical
talented are ready to learn statistics/probability, geometry, and pre algebra long before those topics are
introduced in school. If the advanced material is presented, gifted students will learn it, thereby
boosting their academic achievement. (Swiatek, 1997)
Standardized achievement tests show that gifted

Selfishness In Macbeth
Macbeth by William Shakespeare is the story of how one mans hubris destroys him. From it, we can
extrapolate and comment on how in society people have a choice. We can live a life of altruism,
valour and nobility or one fuelled by ambition, greed and violence. Macbeths journey from the former
to the later showcases to the audience the dangers of selfishness. It prompts us to question our view of
life do we succumb to the false promises of evil, as tempting as they are, or do we remain defiant and
true to ourselves. Shakespeare s play is a very clear warning against listening to the dark forces that
are constantly around us. In the initial scenes of the play, Shakespeare creates a very deliberate first
impression of Macbeth and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It contains the ominous line the greatest is behind . These words, though ambiguous, suggest to the
audience that that Macbeth believes the greatest has already been achieved (i.e. it is his destiny to be
king) so the next steps will be easier. The next steps include getting rid of Duncan. Through his aside
he describes to the audience the thoughts running through his head. He is battling with his innate
goodness if good, why do I yield to that suggestion whose horrible image doth unfix my hair and
make his heart knock at his ribs . His language reveals that he is considering murdering king Duncan,
though he would loathe doing it. However at the end of the aside Macbeth decides not to follow
through with the murder if chance will have me king, why chance may crown me without my stir and
instead leave it to chance as he knows he should be loyal to king Duncan our duties are to your throne
. From this aside the audience learns that Macbeth wants greatness to be his but the horribleness of
murder and his loyalty to the throne are preventing him. At this point Macbeth is still a good man even
though he is flawed. He is aware of his own ambition but is not allowing to undermine his integrity.
An aside is also used following a meeting between Duncan, Macbeth and Banquo. In this scene
Shakespeare uses dramatic irony for when Duncan refers to the traitor Cawdor ne says he was a
gentleman upon which I built an absolute trust . This foreshadows how

Why Is Harry Potter Controversial

21 November 2014
The Debate over J.K. Rowling s Harry Potter Controversy over children s literature is nothing new.
Children are deemed innocent because they have yet to experience the world, and there is a viewpoint
that children should be protected from literature, if it potentially harms their innocence. Despite the
worldwide popularity of the Harry Potter series, its use of witchcraft, wizardry, and violence has
drawn plenty of controversy because some believe that these books are not suitable for children. In the
early 2000s, the topic of witchcraft was a major concern, and it was (and still is) viewed as a threat to
children s literature. The Harry Potter series holds the dubious distinction ... Show more content on

Is the explicit portrayal of death suitable for children s literature? Is it too frightening for children to
read? Deaths include key characters like Dobby the House Elf, Harry s parents, etc. Critics (ex.
parents) argue that these deaths, as well as many others, are causes for concern because they occur as a
result of violence and evil. These books should not be made appropriate for children, because it could
potentially lead to nightmares and bad thoughts.
Despite all the controversy surrounding the Harry Potter series, I have always admired/will always
admire the books because I feel it promotes important values such as courage, love, and friendship.
Critics make the argument that the Harry Potter books encourage witchcraft to children, but I do not
believe that is the case. I feel that real witchcraft is more extreme and violent, than what is portrayed
in this series. This wonderful work of literature opened my eyes to the power of imagination, and it
allowed me to develop a passion for

Periodic Limb Research Paper
What is Periodic Limb Movement Disorder?
Periodic limb movements are when you have episodes of simple, repetitive muscle movements. You
are unable to control them. They usually do not keep you from falling asleep. Instead, they severely
disrupt your sleep during the night. This can cause you to be very tired during the day. They do not
involve a change in body position, stretching a muscle, or a cramp. Instead, the movements tend to
involve the tightening or flexing of a muscle. They occur most often in the lower legs
Symptoms of Periodic Limb Movement Disorder
They can occur at two different times: o Periodic limb movements while you sleep (PLMS) o Periodic
limb movements while you are awake (PLMW)

Low brain iron may play a role in making PLMS worse.
Other Common Conditions Associated with Periodic Limb Movement Disorder
High rates of PLMS have been found in some people with:
Spinal cord injury
Multiple system atrophy (a rare neurological disorder)
Sleep related eating disorder (SRED)
The following medications are thought to cause PLMS or make them worse:
Some antidepressants
Lithium
Dopamine receptor antagonists (e.g., some anti nausea medications)
Data is not certain about a link between PLMS and the following:
Kidney disease
Parkinson disease
ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
Pregnancy
Posttraumatic stress disorder
Multiple sclerosis (MS)
Why Seek Help for Periodic Limb Movement Disorder
To improve the quality of the patient s and bed partner s sleep
To determine if PLMD is caused by another medical condition
How We Treat Periodic Limb Movement Disorder
When it is necessary to treat PLMS, the same drugs that are used for restless legs syndrome also work
for PLMS. These include drugs that replace a chemical in the brain called dopamine. These drugs are
also used to treat Parkinson s disease. However, if you have PLMS, you are not at an increased risk of
getting Parkinson s disease. Other medications used include the

Icelandic Saga Argumentative Essay
I believe that one of the most prominent aspects of Icelandic Saga s is the very unique feuds and
resolutions that are found in our readings. The social issues found in these sagas are constructs of
many different influences upon society during the viking ages making distinctive culturally unique
plots. Despite having a very warrior like history and a culture which praised characteristics which
were violent, we see the progression of Icelanders as we begin to notice more problems solved without
violence. Through the inspection of these feuds solved by peace are we able to obtain a better grasp of
what went into the creation and order of icelandic society and stories. In this essay I will provide an
examination of the resolution of feuds present ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This appreciation for intelligence is also reflected back towards seeking alternatives to violence.
Previous Viking culture appreciated the warrior and voyager who embarked on dangerous raids. While
some of that still held true, there was certainly a transition to dueling without swords, but rather
words. The importance of poetry is highlighted many times in the Sagas. In the Saga of the
Confederates we see Ofeig skillfully use his verses to get the attention of powerful men like Egil and
Gellir when they would have otherwise not wanted to talk. Ofeig crafts this verse on the spot to get
Egil to converse with him, You won t refuse to confer wit me, because worthy men call you wise ,
elegantly playing on the idea that he, simply an old man, just wishes to speak to a wise man.
Obviously, this is no longer a Viking age where threatening people into alliance works, but rather
superior intellect promotes a feeling of trust and

My Life Path My Music Changes With It
(title)
As I look back on the life I have lived so far I see that with every challenge or shift I have faced in my
life path my music changes with it. Whether I move to sad, upbeat, or empowering music, there is
always something I listen to to drift away from the world and think. I think music is important for
everyone because of that. It gives people an excuse to think and to comprehend what s going on in
their life. I know if I am going through something rough nothing feels better then to rest on my bed
with headphones in and forget about whatever is going on around me. However it seems hard for me
to forget about what is happening, for the music I select matches the moods I am in. As I go over my
timeline to this point in music, my choices seems to become more mature and more independent as I
grow up. A major point in my life in which a lot of things started to shift was in 3rd grade when my
parents got divorced.
As I look back on all the music I have listened to throughout my life the first song I can remember
hearing is Yellow Submarine by The Beatles. I have never forgotten about this song and I don t think I
ever will. I can remember when I was about five years old, my mom would throw a disc into a CD
player and repeat it all night and the only song on that CD was Yellow Submarine . Something about
its repetitive tune and the friendly voices of the beatles was always able to knock me out cold no
matter what mood I was in. I barely even got what the song was

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Economic Globalization
Economic globalization alludes to the expanding reliance of world economies because of the

and wide and quick spread of advancements . ( http://www.un.org/en/development/desa ). The quick
developing importance of data in a wide range of beneficial exercises and marketization are the two
noteworthy main thrusts of financial globalization. Economic Globalization is the expansion in

downsides of globalization. The advantages incorporate more prominent rivalry, bring down costs,
economies of scale. While globalization can likewise abandon a ton because of the pace of the

Frank Conroy s Essay Think About It
There is this strange misconception that the implementation of math when creating literature is
impossible. People tend to see math and literature as polar opposites; so, there is no way they could
interact in a cohesive manner. But isn t there a saying about how opposites attract? Literary pieces are
nothing more than intricate mathematical equations. Therefore, superior writers yield more complex
equations. Frank Conroy is particularly talented at manipulating his literature in a mathematical way.
Specifically, Conroy s essay, Think About It, provides an exemplary model of mathematical literature
because of the equation like structure Conroy implements in his writing. Mystery + Experience =
Resolution. A peculiar equation, but a powerful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Too complex to be irrefutably solved one way or another. In this instance, Conroy writes following an
equation that more closely resembles Complex Idea + Experience ≠ Understanding. First, the complex
idea. Conroy meets Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. After telling Justice Douglas that he
knows another prestigious judge named Hand, Conroy assumes the role of messenger boy between the
two. During this time Conroy is informed on the specifics of a controversial Supreme Court case,
Dennis v. United States, which convicted eleven Communist Party leaders plotting to overthrow the
United States government. Conroy begins to analyze the meaning of clear and present danger and
discovers that, Things are sometimes more complicated than they appear. (Conroy 76). Conroy
realizes that clear and present danger does not have one defined meaning. Instead, there are various
connotations supplied by the phrase that may be analyzed and applied to a variety of situations. At this
point, Conroy has reached an understanding of the meaning of clear and present danger without
having reached any specific resolution. This is the main theme that Conroy aims to illustrate
throughout his essay and also a reason that court cases can take so long to be examined. For, if the
rules that governed a nation had only one definite meaning, then there would be nothing to debate

Mindfulness Meditation and The Reduction of Anxiety
Mindfulness Meditation and The Reduction of Anxiety
Mindfulness meditation is a form of meditation that has been prevalent for thousands of years, and is
only becoming increasingly more popular. Over the past decade, neuroscientists like myself have
become increasingly interested in studying how meditation affects the brain and body. The number of
studies conducted per year in this new field of contemplative science is rising exponentially, with
more than 200 studies published last year alone, (Hasenkamp). It s a form of meditation in which a
person builds a practice of awareness, intentionally focuses their attention on the present moment, and
accepts whatever the present moment brings, without any judgment.

The majority of study participants reported decreases in anxiety. Researchers found that meditation
reduced anxiety ratings by as much as 39 percent. (Beck and Davis)
The direct effect that focusing the mind on the present moment has on reducing anxiety and its
symptoms are largely important. The idea of not controlling one s thoughts, but redirecting them to the
present moment is a fairly hard concept for most people to fully understand. Redirecting one s
thoughts to the present moment distracts the mind from any worry some or anxiety inducing thoughts
or feelings, without giving attention to them. The redirection of thoughts essentially keeps the mind
occupied, which means the mind has less time to spend worrying or cultivating anxiety inducing
scenarios in one s mind.
In relation to the redirection of thoughts being effective in reducing anxiety, it also has been proven to
reduce physical symptoms of anxiety or discomfort. By reverting attention away from pre existing
physical discomforts, these same discomforts are given time to subside, which they typically do
immensely, solely because it isn t the focus of one s attention. Some experts believe that mindfulness
works, in part, by helping people to accept their experiences including painful emotions rather than
react to them with aversion and

Complementarian Versus Egalitarian Theology
Complementarian vs. Egalitarian Theology and Beliefs
Christian views, attitudes and beliefs about gender have always varied with some ideas evolving with
society and others set in tradition, never to change. While some see gender difference as a feminist
issue, others see it as a role requirement set by God. Of course, there are extremists on both sides of
this argument, as well as inter lapping beliefs, but gender issues are still debated by Biblical scholars
often and passionately. Not exclusive to denomination, gender equality is a subject that can be
examined in many ways, but the focus of this paper will be on two types of theologies,

This view can also be referred to as biblical equality. Egalitarians feel that Bible teaches Christians
equality both genders within all racial and ethnic groups, economic classes, and age groups based on
the example and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Egalitarian theology interprets scripture with the inference that the teachings of Jesus Christ, through
the Apostle Paul, ended gender specific roles for both genders with regards to the church, ministry and
in marriage. This view explains that God calls each of us to roles within the church with no regard to
race, gender or class. Egalitarians feel that each person should have equal responsibility to use their
talents to follow their calling in order to glorify God, without limitations or rights that are based on
gender. Under this theology, leadership or control in the Church or in the home should not be based on
gender or be male dominated. Egalitarian theory stresses the importance of the Bible teaching
individuals the equality of both genders in the creation and redemption. Nevertheless, in the Lord
woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man,
so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. (1 Corinthians 11:11 12 NIV). There

The account holder can easily access their money through ATMs, transfer and check their account

There are two types of funeral ceremonies which is the Green and Dry disposals of the dead. Green

Dbq Antebellum Reform Movement Essay
In the 1820 s to the 1850 s, the Antebellum Reform Movement was created. It was an act of
improvement, and self change. Reform movements in the United States sought to expand democratic
ideals. This quote is true because, democratic ideals are what the people want and a democracy is
where people rule the government. Reform movements were created by the Second Great Awakening
and it is where people tried to improve their lives. For example, no alcohol, expanding education,
separating themselves from utopias, and womens suffrage. All these examples are ways to improve
oneself, and spread democratic ideals.

The women s suffrage movement, was the women s right by law to vote in elections. The movement
was especially big in the United States and in Britain. The abolition movement caused the rise of the
women s suffrage movement and Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the Grimke Sisters and Lucy
Stone who were all women s rights activists, also sparked the cause of the suffrage movement. Mott
and Stanton organized the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, which was a place to discuss women s
rights. By 1918, women had won the right to vote in 15 states in the U.S. Stanton stated, ... to declare
our right to be free as man is free, to be represented in the government which we are taxed to support,
to have such disgraceful laws as give man the power to chastise and imprison his wife... (Doc. K).
Men aren t better than women. Men and women should be equal, and they should both have the right
to vote. This reform movement really helped expand democratic ideals because the women s suffrage
movement was a success, and all the strong, female leaders also really helped to expand this idea

Bebe And Kid Ink Analysis
Am I wrong for calling the Black Star Elephant album by Nico Vinz one of the best pop albums of
2014? I believe am not wrong. That album was a masterpiece and they continue in its successful
footsteps with their latest song that features Bebe Rexha and Kid Ink. The song is titled That s How
You Know and the perfectly blending duo does what they do best before they let Bebe and Kid Ink put
their art on it.
That s how you know is a very captivating song. It is fun, educative and entertaining all at the same
time. I see this song becoming a hit with circles of people as it portrays very relatable incidents. The
song is sang over a catchy guitar which I found very interesting. It makes the whole song sound like

Bebe Rexha does the second verse and she had the best verse for me. The lady on the song killed it.
You were the man in college / got a degree in awesome / and had more zeros in your bank than all the
matrix coding, sings Bebe. Pretty impressive right? Hell yeah. Bebe definitely had the most exciting
verse on the song. Nico Vinz come back for the third verse then Kid Ink does the last verse.
Kid Ink continues to display an exceptional level of comfort with any style of music he is invited to
feature on. From the guitar the song is sang on, it is hard to imagine what Kid Ink s verse would flow
like but Kid Ink imposingly laid his verse. The flow was well paced to match the guitar and the lyrics
also demonstrate the perfect that s how you know you f**ked up situation. The final chorus comes in
after his verse and Bebe adds superb background vocals for this one. Her vocals will send chills
allover your body they are that amazing.
That s how you know is that reunion song as you all tell stories about how life turned out and if you
messed it up, the entire group will have to sing for you the chorus of this song. It would be perfect for
that occasion. Nico Vinz continue to give us music that s not only entertaining, but educative and fun

sides of this newly created border. One of the best, and perhaps most famous, partition story clearly
reveals this sense of bewilderment, Toba Tek Singh was written in Urdu, Pakistan s national language,
by Sadat Hasan Manto, a Kashmiri who left his home in 1948 and moved to Karachi, Pakistan s
capital. The story recounts the effects of partition on a very particular portion of the population.
The 1955 short story, writen by Saadat Hasan Manto, was based on inmates of lunatic asylums being
split in the wake of the Partition with Hindu and Sikh inmates being transferred to India and Muslim
inmates going to Pakistan. It focused on a particular inmate, Bishan Singh. Bishan Singh is a Sikh
inmate who, fifteen years earlier, had gone mad and was admitted to the asylum by his family.
Everyone in the asylum called him Toba Tek Singh, the name of his village. Almost bald, his legs
swollen, because he is always seen standing and occasionally leaning against the wall, he had the habit
of speaking this nonsensical phrase, Uper the gur gur the annexe the bay dhayana the mung the dal of

to display, that the partion is nonsense. From the story we learn a little bit about Bishan s family and

Early Ottoman Medicine
Early Ottoman Medicine ranged from the 16th century to the 18th century but unlike most places of
the time, its medicinal knowledge was not isolated. The Ottomans had a very diverse body of
knowledge and based their practices on ideas from all around the world. The knowledge came from
the traditions of medieval Islam and central Asia. They also collected information from many sources
such as Greek, Persian and Turkish books. When it came to immigrants, Ottomans always had open
arms. By doing this, they were able to collect information from Iranian physicians and Jews who were
running from persecution in countries such as Spain, Portugal and Italy. The Ottomans collected
information from all around the world, helping them implement the most advanced and up to date
practices. However, not all of their practices were advanced. In early Ottoman medicine there was a
wide range of medical practices ranging from those deemed superstitious and supernatural to practices
considered extremely advanced. Some Ottoman physicians practiced advanced methods but they did
not come from advanced beliefs. The beliefs of Humoralism, one of the three types of medicine
practiced at the time would today be laughed at. Humoralists believed that the body was made up of
four humors: blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile. They believed that sickness would be caused
by an imbalance of these humors. To heal the sick person it was necessary to find what humor was

Andrew Jackson Message Regarding Indian Relations Summary
Rhetoric of Message Regarding Indian Relations ; Andrew Jackson Unwrapped
When one hears the name Andrew Jackson, there are many feelings that are conjured up by an
individual. Some of these emotions include fear, disgust, and comedy. These sentiments are of reason
for substantial evidence exists to prove these emotions plausible. Andrew Jackson was the seventh
president under the Constitution of the United States of America who presided from 1829 until 1837.
However, he was the first president to be impeached. With his controversial presidency, Andrew
Jackson implemented many policies that continue to impact the United States in the modern era. His
most controversial contribution was the Indian Removal Act. The Indian Removal Act prompted the
infamous Trail of Tears that killed many Cherokee Native Americans and moved them westward to
confined reservations. Of course, to implement such grand policy, Jackson had to unduly convince
Congress of those actions. In Andrew Jackson s speech given February 22nd, 1831 entitled Message
Regarding Indian Relations, he tries to vindicate the Indian Removal Act, outline the benefits of such
legislation, and explain why such it was indeed important. Rhetorical strategies such as ethos, pathos,
and logos are effectively utilized by Jackson to persuade Congress to believe in the merits of
upholding the Indian Removal Act which then lead to westward expansion and Native American
migration from their homelands.

Thesis Statement Of Family Law
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act, 1956 primarily deals with the issue of guardianship to a
minor child. The expression minor includes a person who has not completed the age of eighteen years.
The Act is applicable only to the persons who are Hindu by religion. Section 6 of the act provides that
the father shall be the guardian of minor child and after him mother shall be the guardian. Even under
Muslim Law, father has preferred right over child. The proviso thus, discriminates between the father
and mother.

helps in maintaining the sanctity of relationship and keeps the bondage tight and unfailing.
Guardianship is a concept or relationship arising from the natural incapacities of infants and persons
of unsound mind and sometimes other category of persons to manage their own affairs . A guardian is
a person who has the authority and the corresponding duty to care for the personal and property
interests of another person, called a ward. Usually, a person has the status of guardian because the
ward is incapable of caring for his or her own interests due to infancy, incapacity, or disability. Most
countries and states have laws that provide that the parents of a minor child are the legal guardians of
that child, and that the parents can designate who shall become the child s legal guardian in the event

The Dystopian Society of Oceania in the Novel 1984 by...
Power over the mind and power over the past are both necessary to ensure power over the population.
Both language and power are crucial to controlling the population and since language has the power in
politics to mask the truth and mislead the public, one could use them both to increase public
awareness of this power. In the dystopian society of Oceania in George Orwell s novel 1984, Orwell
gives readers a glimpse at how power and language relationship can be used to gain control of the
public. In order to display one s dominance, power is the key factor that should be displayed to gain
control over the public. In the novel The Party has the power and control over the population. The
Party promulgates the idea that whatever government is in power has the power to control everything
that is, that was, and everything that ever will be. The Party seems to be imposing a tension between
two different types of discourse, or two different attitudes to the uses of language through which the
world is represented to the people of Oceania. Their slogan Who controls the past controls the future;
who controls the present controls the past, is a prime example of how they use language to control the
population (p.37). The Party use slogans such as big brother is watching to ensure that there is no
deviation from Big Brother s doctrine. This also gives the party a sort of god like power because it
seems as though they are always watching and will always know when someone sins. One

for transgender people was 32.01. No strata of respondents had a mean score greater than 50. These
findings of generally negative attitudes toward transgender people are consistent with studies among
transgender people in which they report widespread stigma and discrimination. A recent review of the
literature on nurses attitudes toward LGBT patients showed evidence of negative attitudes in all 17
articles. A study of 427 LGBT physicians found that 65% had heard derogatory comments about
LGBT individuals and 34% had witnessed discriminatory care of an LGBT patient. Moreover, the
growing process of the globalization follows the society to the tolerance, and the investigation

Toward A Recovery Of Nineteenth Century Farming Handbooks
Toward a Recovery of Nineteenth Century Farming Handbooks
While researching texts written about nineteenth century farming, I found a few authors who
published books about the literature of nineteenth century farming, particularly agricultural journals,
newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures. These authors often placed the farming literature they were
studying into an historical context by discussing the important events in agriculture of the year in
which the literature was published (see Demaree, for example). However, while these authors discuss
journals, newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures, I could not find much discussion about another
important source of farming knowledge: farming handbooks. My goal in this paper is to bring this
source into the agricultural literature discussion by connecting three agricultural handbooks from the
nineteenth century with nineteenth century agricultural history. To achieve this goal, I have organized
my paper into four main sections, two of which have sub sections. In the first section, I provide an
account of three important events in nineteenth century agricultural history: population and
technological changes, the distribution of scientific new knowledge, and farming s influence on
education. In the second section, I discuss three nineteenth century farming handbooks in connection
with the important events described in the first section. I end my paper with a third section that offers

Identity in Cindy Sherman´s Contemporary Art
Identity is one of the most significant aspects in the discourses of contemporary art. An artist s identity
can reveal cultural and personal truths about them through the employment of specific subjects,
techniques, and colors incorporated into their artwork. Cindy Sherman, the famous feminist artist,
portrays a plethora of different identities in her photographic works in order to highlight societal
issues such as stereotypes, perceptions, and biases. Although Sherman does not blatantly set out to
become an activist for femininity, audiences inherently view her work as attempting to cross
boundaries and bring forth political statements because of the myriad androgynous, feminine, and
sexist facets integrated into her images. In order to display the importance of identity in culture, Cindy
Sherman refrains from revealing her own identity in her art and because of these ambiguous images,
she allows for the identities of her audience to be reflected back at them, bringing forth awareness of
inequality, while quietly calling for the anticipated change of these enduring stigmas. Cindy Sherman
began focusing her creative outlets through photography during her time at Buffalo State College, NY
in 1972 1976. Despite her future success with photography, Sherman had considerable difficulty
honing the techniques of darkroom development. Nevertheless, the real magic clearly displayed in her
photographs began to occur in the very confines of her bedroom few years later. According to

Modern Family Vs. Present Family Essay
1950s Family vs. Present Family There is always that one question that has been on everyone s mind,
what does a real family look like? What is a family? What are mothers supposed to do? fathers?
children? What are their gender roles? Well, during the 1950s, there were many families whom
believed that the show I Love Lucy portrayed the perfect family, but that was back in the good old
days . It has been more than 50 years and there are still current shows today that portray a perfect
family, in different ways. The American television series, Modern Family portrays one big perfect
straight, gay, diverse, traditional family. These televisions hit series are informing the audience how a
perfect family is supposed to be but some in a positive way and others in a negative way. Well, the real
answer is that the 1950s were not the good old days . For example, in the television hit series, Modern
Family , episode 2 and 3 season 1, portrays an imagine of what the key is to being a great dad . The
first family (Jay, Gloria and Manny) take a while to respond to this question but towards the end of the
episode Jay says, Sometimes things work out just the way you want. Sometimes they don t. You have

Ap Euro Dbq French Revolution Calendar
The French Revolution inspired the desire for change and freedom from oppression. Being limited by
the Roman Catholic Church and government was no longer ideal, resulting in many new proposals. Of
these proposals was the notion of wanting to change the Gregorian calendar to a new and non religious
calendar, the Revolutionary calendar. This calendar was made strictly on reasons aimed to improve
France and change previous rituals. With the new system of different months and days, the adoption of
the calendar stimulated controversy between supporters of it and the opposition. Those in favor of the
calendar argued that in order to fully break away from the old customs of France and the church, there
must be a reform in all former things. This includes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The new calendar should not have changed because everyone was already used to the system of the
Gregorian calendar. Making a new calendar will confuse many and throw off schedules of customary
practices (Document 2). Abbe Sieyes responded with this because he was a clergyman who supported
the National Assembly, meaning that the new calendar could consequently result in hardships for the
lower class, which went against what Sieyes fought for. Adding onto this, the people of the lower class
will have a harder time with the new ten days in a week. Working nine out of ten of those days doing
hard labor is vigorous work that required all of their time. A peasant at this time would hate the
Revolutionary calendar because having only one day to take a break is not enough for one to fully
regenerate themselves after constant weeks of labor (Document 4). In addition, this calendar upset
many because it was imposed on the people by force, no one previously had a problem with the
Gregorian calendar (Document 5). Also, images of spiritual related objects will constantly be seen and
since the people were accustomed to religion, practices and traditions will never fade away (Document
6). Being a government official who resides in a French town will have first hand view of the rituals
among the people and will notice that the new calendar system is flawed. It was only a matter of time

friendships with boys his own age like Tom Sawyer or with outcasts from the society of his elders like
the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet there is ample evidence of Huck s basic sense of decency, or rather shame, at his resemblance to
his non account father. Huck even accepts the Widow s forging religious Providence in spite of his low
self esteem:
I judged I could see that there was two Providences, and a poor chap would stand considerable show
with the widow s Providence, but if Miss Watson s got him there warn t no help for him any more. I
thought it all out, and reckoned I would belong to the Widow s if he wanted me, though I couldn t
make out how he was a going to be any better off then than what he was before, seeing I was so
ignorant, and so kind of low down and ornery.
Huck is ignorant in the sense of lacking a formal education, but low down and ornery is the
characterization of his father that Huck sees reflected in himself whenever he fidgets in front of a
mirror. In fact, Huck s greatest virtue is his absolute honesty in his self examination, which overlooks
his fundamental decency and compassion. Huck is actually very different from his father, who is
bigoted and ill tempered, as becomes apparent when Pap shows up to reclaim Huck and the money.
Huck probably would be happier in the wild state in which he lives with his father after the latter
abducts him, however. We sense this is the scenes of his self sufficient existence on the island after he

The Scottsboro Trial
The Scottsboro Trials were among the largest legal injustices in the South. The events that started the
trials began in the early spring of 1931, when nine young black men were falsely accused of raping
two white women on a train. The cases were tried and appealed in Alabama and twice argued before
the U.S. Supreme Court. The state pursued the case and all white juries delivered guilty verdicts that
initially carried the death penalty. Several of the accused were sentenced to prison terms and all had
long stays in prison as the case made its way through the legal system. The case later was one of the
inspirations for Harper Lee s book To Kill A Mockingbird The story began on March 25, 1931, when a
fight broke out between groups of young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following the verdict, another of the defendants, Ozzie Powell, was shot in the head after attacking a
deputy sheriff in an apparent escape attempt. After Patterson s conviction was upheld in the Alabama
Supreme Court, the prosecution and the Scottsboro Defense Committee agreed to a strange
compromise in an effort to end the long ordeal. Clarence Norris was convicted of rape and sentenced
to death; Norris sentence was subsequently commuted to life imprisonment by Alabama governor.
Andy Wright and Charlie Weems also were convicted of rape and sentenced to lengthy prison terms.
Rape charges were dropped against Powell, but he was convicted of assaulting the deputy sheriff and
sentenced to 20 years. Meanwhile, all charges against the other four defendants Roy Wright, Olen
Montgomery, Willie Roberson, and Eugene Williams were dropped. Thus, on the basis of the same
body of evidence, four defendants were freed and four convicted. In 1938 a final attempt to win the
remaining prisoners freedom failed when both the Alabama Pardon Board and governor Graves denied
pardon applications. Charlie Weems was paroled in 1943; Clarence Norris and Andy Wright were
paroled a year later but both were sent back to prison shortly thereafter for violating the terms of their
probation; Ozzie Powell was paroled in 1946; Haywood Patterson escaped from prison in 1948.

Food Safety Modernization Act ( Fsma ) Into Law
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention documented that about one out of six Americans get
sick (approximately 48 million people), 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die each year from
foodborne diseases (CDC.gov). According to the FDA this is a significant public health concern which
can be preventable (FDA.gov). This was the main reason why on January 4th, 2011, President Obama
signed the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) into law. Some specific examples and major
events that might have led to signing the FSMA into a law are major outbreaks that have happened in
the past few years. Some examples are the Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreak which was linked to
spinach, contamination of wheat gluten with melamine, and the outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium
in Peanut Corporation of America s peanut butter (Acheson, 2015). The FSMA amends the Federal
Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD C) with respect to safety of the food supply. The FD C Act consists
of the regulation of food, drugs, devices, and biological products by the FDA. These changes were
made in order to highlight that the FDA has to adapt the way it operates according to what is
happening in the food industry. Our food now travels more to get to us and the pathogens that we
encountered before are now changing, adapting and sometimes becoming stronger and harder to
defeat. In addition, people live longer and develop chronic diseases, making them susceptible to
getting a foodborne illness. FSMA provides

Computers Can Not Have Minds
Alan Turing, father of modern computers, created the Turing Machine in order to prove, through the
use of an imitation game, that computers can think. John Searle argued that the Turing Test is simply
just imitating, rather than thinking. Based on Searle s argument against the Turing Test, I think that
computers cannot have minds. Although Turing argues that computers can think, there are many
arguments, such as Searle s Chinese room argument, and defenses that I will present that support
Searle and his belief that computers do not understand the information they simulate and cannot think.
As stated above, the purpose of the Turing Machine is to prove that computers can think. A Turing
Machine is composed of a scanner with a tape made of paper running through it. This paper tape is
divided into squares. Each square on the tape contains a symbol, either a 0 of a 1. The machine, along
with two humans, will participate in an imitation game. Human A and the Turing Machine are hidden
from view of Human B and have a conversation in order for Human B to try to determine which of the
communicators is a robot, if either one is a robot. The machine s goal is to trick Human B into
thinking it (the machine) is the human. Turing states that if the machine is successful, then the
machine does have a mind. Turing s machine has the ability to answer any question presented to it,
and Turing saw this ability as a sign of extreme intelligence. On the other hand, Searle argued that this

Attendance for Major League Baseball games is down 6.6 percent from this time last year, forecasting the third straight season of decline. While the popular excuse is to blame the downturn on early season washouts, Commissioner Rob Manfred recently told The Wall Street Journal he is concerned that there s something to it more than weather. In Philadelphia, attendance is actually up about three percent from 2017 to 24,855 per game. No reliable national surveys of ability grouping in elementary schools have been conducted, but a consistent picture emerges from several local studies. According to the article Ability Group Effects: Instructional, Social, or Institutional?, (Pallas, 1994) ability grouping for reading instruction appears nearly universal, especially in the early grades. Schools seek to create teachable groups of children within classes containing a broad range of skills, from students who independently breeze through children s novels to those who have yet to learn basic letter sounds. Once students are grouped, they generally stay at that level for their school careers, and the gap between achievement and levels becomes exaggerated over time. The notion that students achievement levels at any given time will predict their achievement in the future becomes a self fulfilling prophecy (Slavin, 1990). Wheelock doesn t dismiss all forms of ability grouping. For example, a group might be set up within a class to help students who are having difficulty with a specific skill, or a group might be formed to pre teach a skill to a group of students who might have difficulty grasping a concept. Advocates Those that support ability grouping in schools argue that it is not just gifted and talented students that benefit from this practice. Although students benefit slightly from ability grouping even when course content is not altered, they could gain much more when the curriculum is adjusted to suit their academic needs, according to Mary Ann Swiatek (1997). Swiatek argues, students with mathematical talented are ready to learn statistics/probability, geometry, and pre algebra long before those topics are introduced in school. If the advanced material is presented, gifted students will learn it, thereby boosting their academic achievement. (Swiatek, 1997) Standardized achievement tests show that gifted ... It prompts us to question our view of life do we succumb to the false promises of evil, as tempting as they are, or do we remain defiant and true to ourselves. It contains the ominous line the greatest is behind . These words, though ambiguous, suggest to the audience that that Macbeth believes the greatest has already been achieved (i.e. it is his destiny to be king) so the next steps will be easier. He is battling with his innate goodness if good, why do I yield to that suggestion whose horrible image doth unfix my hair and make his heart knock at his ribs . His language reveals that he is considering murdering king Duncan, though he would loathe doing it. However at the end of the aside Macbeth decides not to follow through with the murder if chance will have me king, why chance may crown me without my stir and instead leave it to chance as he knows he should be loyal to king Duncan our duties are to your throne . From this aside the audience learns that Macbeth wants greatness to be his but the horribleness of murder and his loyalty to the throne are preventing him. At this point Macbeth is still a good man even though he is flawed. He is aware of his own ambition but is not allowing to undermine his integrity. One of the best, and perhaps most famous, partition story clearly reveals this sense of bewilderment, Toba Tek Singh was written in Urdu, Pakistan s national language, by Sadat Hasan Manto, a Kashmiri who left his home in 1948 and moved to Karachi, Pakistan s capital. The story recounts the effects of partition on a very particular portion of the population. The 1955 short story, writen by Saadat Hasan Manto, was based on inmates of lunatic asylums being split in the wake of the Partition with Hindu and Sikh inmates being transferred to India and Muslim inmates going to Pakistan. It focused on a particular inmate, Bishan Singh. Bishan Singh is a Sikh inmate who, fifteen years earlier, had gone mad and was admitted to the asylum by his family. Everyone in the asylum called him Toba Tek Singh, the name of his village. Almost bald, his legs swollen, because he is always seen standing and occasionally leaning against the wall, he had the habit of speaking this nonsensical phrase, Uper the gur gur the annexe the bay dhayana the mung the dal of the laltain. Andrew Jackson was the seventh president under the Constitution of the United States of America who presided from 1829 until 1837. However, he was the first president to be impeached. With his controversial presidency, Andrew Jackson implemented many policies that continue to impact the United States in the modern era. His most controversial contribution was the Indian Removal Act. The Indian Removal Act prompted the infamous Trail of Tears that killed many Cherokee Native Americans and moved them westward to confined reservations. Of course, to implement such grand policy, Jackson had to unduly convince Congress of those actions. In Andrew Jackson s speech given February 22nd, 1831 entitled Message Regarding Indian Relations, he tries to vindicate the Indian Removal Act, outline the benefits of such legislation, and explain why such it was indeed important. Rhetorical strategies such as ethos, pathos, and logos are effectively utilized by Jackson to persuade Congress to believe in the merits of upholding the Indian Removal Act which then lead to westward expansion and Native American migration from their homelands. Both language and power are crucial to controlling the population and since language has the power in politics to mask the truth and mislead the public, one could use them both to increase public awareness of this power. In the dystopian society of Oceania in George Orwell s novel 1984, Orwell gives readers a glimpse at how power and language relationship can be used to gain control of the public. In order to display one s dominance, power is the key factor that should be displayed to gain control over the public. In the novel The Party has the power and control over the population. The Party promulgates the idea that whatever government is in power has the power to control everything that is, that was, and everything that ever will be. The Party seems to be imposing a tension between two different types of discourse, or two different attitudes to the uses of language through which the world is represented to the people of Oceania. Their slogan Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past, is a prime example of how they use language to control the population (p.37). • 41. Identity in Cindy Sherman´s Contemporary Art Identity is one of the most significant aspects in the discourses of contemporary art. An artist s identity can reveal cultural and personal truths about them through the employment of specific subjects, techniques, and colors incorporated into their artwork. Cindy Sherman, the famous feminist artist, portrays a plethora of different identities in her photographic works in order to highlight societal issues such as stereotypes, perceptions, and biases. Although Sherman does not blatantly set out to become an activist for femininity, audiences inherently view her work as attempting to cross boundaries and bring forth political statements because of the myriad androgynous, feminine, and sexist facets integrated into her images. In order to display the importance of identity in culture, Cindy Sherman refrains from revealing her own identity in her art and because of these ambiguous images, she allows for the identities of her audience to be reflected back at them, bringing forth awareness of inequality, while quietly calling for the anticipated change of these enduring stigmas. Cindy Sherman began focusing her creative outlets through photography during her time at Buffalo State College, NY in 1972 1976. Despite her future success with photography, Sherman had considerable difficulty honing the techniques of darkroom development. This calendar was made strictly on reasons aimed to improve France and change previous rituals. • 46. Food Safety Modernization Act ( Fsma ) Into Law The Center for Disease Control and Prevention documented that about one out of six Americans get sick (approximately 48 million people), 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die each year from foodborne diseases (CDC.gov). According to the FDA this is a significant public health concern which can be preventable (FDA.gov). This was the main reason why on January 4th, 2011, President Obama signed the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) into law. Some specific examples and major events that might have led to signing the FSMA into a law are major outbreaks that have happened in the past few years. Some examples are the Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreak which was linked to spinach, contamination of wheat gluten with melamine, and the outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium in Peanut Corporation of America s peanut butter (Acheson, 2015). The FSMA amends the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD C) with respect to safety of the food supply. The FD C Act consists of the regulation of food, drugs, devices, and biological products by the FDA. These changes were made in order to highlight that the FDA has to adapt the way it operates according to what is happening in the food industry. Our food now travels more to get to us and the pathogens that we encountered before are now changing, adapting and sometimes becoming stronger and harder to defeat. • 48. Computers Can Not Have Minds Alan Turing, father of modern computers, created the Turing Machine in order to prove, through the use of an imitation game, that computers can think. John Searle argued that the Turing Test is simply just imitating, rather than thinking. Based on Searle s argument against the Turing Test, I think that computers cannot have minds. Although Turing argues that computers can think, there are many arguments, such as Searle s Chinese room argument, and defenses that I will present that support Searle and his belief that computers do not understand the information they simulate and cannot think. As stated above, the purpose of the Turing Machine is to prove that computers can think. A Turing Machine is composed of a scanner with a tape made of paper running through it. This paper tape is divided into squares. Each square on the tape contains a symbol, either a 0 of a 1. The machine, along with two humans, will participate in an imitation game. Human A and the Turing Machine are hidden from view of Human B and have a conversation in order for Human B to try to determine which of the communicators is a robot, if either one is a robot. The machine s goal is to trick Human B into thinking it (the machine) is the human. Turing states that if the machine is successful, then the machine does have a mind. Turing s machine has the ability to answer any question presented to it, and Turing saw this ability as a sign of extreme intelligence. On the other hand, Searle argued that this ...
