The Boston Fbi Field Office Building
The room was filled with chatter and arguments. The mass murder that was happening in the states of
the New England region was the center of the discussion in the Boston FBI field office building.
Officer Alecia Harrison was sitting silently in the room while the roars of the others burdened her ears.
It was a late night and the agents were talking all at once about their opinions on the situation. She
sighed, looked around the room and shouted over the silence for everyone to be quiet. The individuals
in the room grew silent as they looked at the young woman who had just interrupted their banter.
Listen, this isn t helping the situation. We need to come together and figure out a lead, explained
Alecia. The only information we have is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She felt a chill run down her spine as she had a sense that someone was watching her from afar.
Slowly turning to look behind her, she looked out in the distance of the woods by her house. When she
felt certain that no one was there she proceeded the rest of the way to her front door.
The young woman opened up her door and immediately felt that sense of uneasiness again even
though her home was full of light. She could hear the water running in the bathroom and figured that
her boyfriend, James, was just taking his usual night shower. She went into the kitchen to get a quick
drink of water. As she drank the cool liquid she felt an immense feeling of relief. She advanced toward
the bathroom. She walked down the hallway heading towards the closed bathroom door. Alecia felt a
sense of panic and anxiety when she felt her foot become slightly submerged in a liquid on the floor.
She flung the bathroom door open and felt her throat tighten at the scene. Her loving boyfriend was
laying in the bathtub clearly dead with the water overflowing over the sides of the tub. His eyes were
glazed over, looking almost made out of glass, and his skin had started to become discolored. Letting
out a guttural scream, she ran to the side of the tub and tried to lift him out. However, she knew it was
too late and he was too heavy for her to lift. She sunk to the wet floor with tears falling from her eyes
as she turned off

The Veldt Essay
Many people have devices to help make their lives easier, whether it s a small difference or a large
one. Some devices can do many things, like a phone can make calls or get on the internet. Other forms
of technology have a greater impact on our lives, for example, medical equipment. Ray Bradbury
demonstrates technologies advantages for humans everyday lives through The Veldt and The
Pedestrian. Undeniably, technology can have a negative effect on everyday lives, especially for
children. Ray Bradbury shows how mixing spoiled children with technology is never a good
combination, And brush my own teeth and comb my hair and give myself a bath? (The Veldt, page 7)
In the story, Peter Hadley is livid about hearing he might actually have to do everyday essentials for
himself. While a small amount of help in life is fine, too much can lead to laziness and the lack of
knowledge on daily chores. Peter claims, I don t want to do anything but look and listen and smell;
what else is there to do? (The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This does not only change everyday life, it changes life in the long run. Bradbury describes the house,
They walked down the the hall of their soundproofed Happylife Home, which had cost them thirty
thousand dollars installed, this house which clothed and fed and rocked them to sleep and played and
sang and was good to them. Everyday life is changed for the family in this house when the house
helped cook food and clothe them. The technology to create a house that cooks is cutting edge. It is a
concept people like Bradbury could only dream of. The convenience of a house that cooks opens free
time to start a hobby or just relax from the stress of everyday life. With a house that rocks its
inhabitants to sleep, a family could get much better sleep, compared to a regular bed. This high tech
advancement would make every day life easier and more stress free for anyone living in

Mkt 421 Week 4 Statement Analysis
Meanings In Messages
What influenced the similarities and differences in you answers?
After reading all four statements and carefully answering them, I was more drawn to statements 1 3.
Due the fact that a persons communication skills are needed in most or shall I say in all jobs, to
convey a message for the task to get done and in a timely manner. Also a person can be competitive
and persuasive, in order to say on top, and keep the focus of the company, and the employees that the
business get s handled. Now for the statements 2 4, I really didn t have much to say about the two.
How do these influences contribute to the meanings we assign to messages?
Wow, this is very hard to say, what we assign to messages at any given time weather ... Show more

Typically, however, this is what most focus on.
Having trained many salespeople, recruiters, and even stage speakers, most of them are mostly
concerned with what to say... what s my script, what s my presentation, what do I say when they have
this objection, etc. before you communicate (recruit, prospect, present) words to someone, be sure you
rekindle and reconnect to your true emotion for what you re saying and then say it with the full
passion and enthusiasm of your heart and soul attach the iron bars of emotion to the straight pins of
your words.
What will you do to reconnect with your convictions and feelings before you speak? What will you do
to be sure you resell yourself before trying to sell another? Do that and thousands will march in the
direction of your command (Hardy, 2014).
Reframing the above statements in a conversation that would change how others perceive the
information being received, would be a great way for all parts to be comfortable, and no one will
offended, it s all that easy to do.

Teaching Tenure, The Most Common One Is Job Protection Essay
While there are several reasons educators say they need tenure, the most common one is job
protection. This could possibly stem from the time before tenure when educators were fired for any
reason. Many like to point out that the time before was possibly one of the worst times to be a teacher
because of all the petty reasons one could have been fired. For example, if one was from a different
political party than the principal then said educator could be fired. Many female educators like to point
out how prior to 1886 they could have been fired for wearing pants and how previous to coherent
tenure laws, pregnant women were required to take two unpaid years off of work. Unfortunately many
of the reasons cited for the terminating of teachers is being ineffective. While the meaning of the word
not producing an significant or desired effect seems black and white there are many shades of gray in
between when discussing tenure. One major question when trying to determine effectiveness is how
exactly it should be determined. While it seems easy for school districts to determine who is and is not
effective in their schools, it is hard for them to do so and stay within the law. Many laws protect
teachers from being fired without a due process, meaning that tenured educators about to be fired are
entitled to a trial of their peers. This requires several different lawyers, substantial evidence, and of
course copious amounts of money. While this is a hassle for school districts,

Sarah-Elizabeth Atunrase Final Paper
Sarah Elizabeth Atunrase Final Paper 5/9/18 Final Paper The two behavioral concepts I recognized in
the DeWaal paper were true altruism and empathy. Altruism is defined as altruism without obvious
advantages for the actor (DeWaal). Reciprocal altruism is the act of giving aid or preforming an act of
kindness in order to receive delayed benefits or even immediate benefits (Lecture 23: Empathy and
Altruism). In order to participate in altruistic acts the species must have empathy. Empathy is
important because in order to perform these acts of kindness one has to understand the emotion of
another and be able to imagine what someone else is going through. Dewaal discusses how altruism in
animals must stem from something other than actions with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Instead, he allowed his new friend to protect him and help him ward off competition when it came to
eating. Because geese mate for life the tortoise was lucky enough to find a companion and protection.
It can t be determined if the tortoise understood the actions of the goose. I choose this example
because it lacks the feel good feeling or helping someone in need of aid. I do not see examples of
empathetic behavior in this scenario. Another relationship that was less altruistic was the dog and the
cheetah. This is because they never performed beneficial acts at their expense in order to help each
other. They had companionship built over many years no doubt, but they appeared more like orphaned
siblings who have developed their own ways of communication and no true acts of altruism or
reciprocal altruism were demonstrated. As outlined previously, acts of altruism require the actor to
have self awareness and the ability to have empathy for another. I think it is because Atlas the Gibbon
and the Capuchin troop are cultural close and their forms of communication and playfulness allow
them to understand each other altruism and empathy are easiest to spot in their

In the 1960s and 1970s, small CHW programs began to emerge in various countries, particularly in
Latin America. The experience from CHW programs predating the 1970s provided the inspiration for
much larger CHW programs in many low income countries in the 1980s. Following the failure of
many of the programs in the 1980s and 1990s, new highly successful programs have emerged and, at
present, as a result of research findings demonstrating the effectiveness of community based programs
in improving child health in particular, there is now a resurgence of interest and growth of CHW

Trends in construction dispute resolution
Introduction
10% of the UK s gross national product is accounted for by construction activity, meaning there is a
lot of dispute resolution and it comes in a wide variety of flavours. 35 years ago alternative dispute
resolution did not exists (Gaitskell states 27 years, but paper was done in 2005...), and the phrase
dispute resolution was rarely used. The only forms of dispute resolution regularly employed were
court litigation and arbitration. On isolated occasions there might be an expert determination. These
are all final determinations, subject only to appeals in confined circumstances.

TCC is markedly different, a trial date can be set when parties are ready for it usually in a matter of
months. TCC judges lists are no longer full and be available to act as arbitrators if the parties so chose.
A recently published leaflet on the TCC court says that TCC judges can be appointed as an arbitrator
and the fees are highly competitive.
Statics displaying proceedings in the TCC over a 10 year period dropped from 1,778 in 1995, to only
390 cases in 2004, a drop in 78%. However, these statistics are not as dramatic as they sound, as many
trials in 1995 would not come to court these days.
All this changed due to the introduction of the Woolf Reforms, embodied in the 1998 Civil Procedures
Rules (CPR) which came into force on the 26th April 1999. A consequence of this is litigants must
fulfil numerous requirements of protocols involving alerting the other party of the nature of one s case
prior to commencing proceedings. This weeds out disputes that previously a decade ago would not
have intended to go to a trial.
CPR had an effect across the court system, proceedings dropped dramatically. Within two years of the
reform, civil litigation overall was down by 37%. Various civil court cost issues have made courts less
attractive as the CPR introduced a summary of costs to simplify the costs

themes of both novels are similar, the manner in which characters behave with each other, the
dependency families have on each other, and the ability of individuals to mitigate conflict is different.
Both My Ántonia and Giants in the Earth portray an array of sources causing conflict in relationships.

Instead of attempting to resolve the conflict, viewing the Shimerdas as foreign and distant provides a
perspective that justifies violence. This is demonstrated as [Jake] landed Ambrosch a blow on the head
(83). Jake is able to justify the violence to himself, because the wrongdoing of Ambrosch is amplified
by nativism.
Giants in the Earth conveys a greater sense of difference a racialized depiction between us and them
with a frenzied panic from Per Hansa s family accompanying the appearance of Indians. Fear of
Indian s was common among settlers, who told stories of great massacres and atrocities committed by
tribes. When Indians approach, Per Hansa and neighboring settlers are indignant, stating that there isn
t any doubt the land they inhabit is theirs fearing the Indians may steal it or attack his family (Rölvaag
73). Perception of Indians uncivilized and barbaric contribute to their fear, as they watched with
anxious attention the Indian band as it crept up the slope of the hill towards the crest (68). Per Hansa
creates greater distinction as he drew such ghastly pictures to Sam of the cruelty with which the
Indians would probably treat the cows , bowing to racialized assumptions that Indians are savage (69).
When he remarks that I guess we ll have to be satisfied with a scalp or two , he recognizes that

Why The US Won The Battle Of Midway
The United States had to face two enemies at one time. The U.S.A had to push the Nazis

was the war of Midway. The Japanese tried to take destroy the three aircraft
battleships. The Japanese attacked the Midway ship two times but they thought they
attacked two different ships so they took a break. They only attacked one battleship
so they were resting the other two battle ships got ready to attack the Japanese
battleship and the U.S. destroyed the Japanese battleship. After the Nazis took over

The Fifth Of March Ann Rinaldi Summary
The New World and its Beginning The action, 1770, the American Revolution. Whether you are on
England s side or American s you cannot deny the fact of the bettering of the world, with America
rising as the world s new superpower. But before all this America had to win a war, a war against its
parents, the then, worldly superpower. A great introduction is The Fifth of March by Ann Rinaldi. This
story is about a fourteen year old girl who is forced to choose between loyalist or patriot, in her case
she is faced with many people who influence the final decision. Three great examples of character
traits that Rachel (main character) grows and adapts to, are confidence, empathy, and perseverance.
Before the essay is brought to a start an intro to the background of the US is needed. The King of
England sent the Americans to the new world to grow his power, but the Americans felt left out in the
decision making so they revolted. The formed their own country, the King still believing he was all
and powerful didn t like this. He fought the US, this is how events like the Boston Massacre, the basis
of The Fifth of March, or events like the Battle of Saratoga which lead the Americans towards their
independence occurred. Perseverance, that s a biggie, because without it Americans never would have

place of power in her novels where everything revolved around them, where Rachel had full power to
make this choice herself. Rachel grows immensely in confidence throughout the novel, readers can

When underwater the submarine uses internal guidance systems that keeps tract of the ship s motion
from a fixed starting point using gyroscopes (Works). To locate targets submarines use a passive sonar,
that works by emitting sound waves through water and allowing the sound waves to reflect off the

to be the pressure hull. It is the most important because when the submarine goes below the water
there is lots of pressure pushing in on it. Most submarines have two hulls one on the outside that is
waterproof and another on the inside that is much stronger and resistant to immense water pressure

DSCA Command Relationships during Katrina
SFC Marson, Kellen
Master Leader Course

Introduction
On August 29th, 2005, Hurrican Katrina, a Category 4 hurricane, made landfall. Katrina left severe
destruction along the Golf Coast and evenutally breached the New Orleans levee system putting the
city under water. The death toll was estimated at 1,245 people and an estimated $105 billion dollars in
damage occured (Knabb 2011). During Katrina, command relationships failed because of political
differences between President Bush and Louisiana Governor, Kathleen Blanco as to who should
command the National Guard, delays at the National Guard Bureau (NGB) in deploying troops and
equipment, and failing to create a unity of effort between National Guard and Active Duty forces.
National Guard
The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina left tens of thousands of people in New Orleans without adequate
water, food, shelter, and physical security. Law enforcement was in disarray as 200 New Orleans
Police officers left their post. The Louisiana National Guard was short on personnel and much of their
equipment was unserviceable due to flooding. Thousands of people needed help and critical
distribution of resources from Defense Support of Civilian Authorities (DSCA) failed.
As New Orleans spiraled out of control, looting and crime were becoming a serious problem. The
Louisiana National Guard focused on rescue missions, rather than keeping Law Order. The public
began to blame President Bush and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco for their poor response to the
recovery efforts.
In a meeting on Airforce One, President Bush tried to convince Governor Blanco to federalize the
National Guard in order to have all forces under one central command. Governor Blanco refused this
offer, believing that Bush s attempt to federalize the Louisiana National Guard was just attempt to
blame her for post Katrina problems (Farazmand, 2014).
While President Bush and Governor Blanco argued over politics, valuable time was being wasted and
innocent people in New Orleans continued to suffer and parish at the hands of it s own federal and
state governments. Across the country, National Guard Soldiers from various

There have been multiple studies and experiments done on this particular subject. Scientists have yet
to produce any evidence to suggest that sexual orientation is determined by a particular factor or

when its comes to sexual orientation . If someone can truly change or choose if they are gay or lesbian
or straight would it not be easy for them to just come out and say that they are not gay anymore?
Correct, they can say that they don t feel an attraction to the same sex but most of the time it wouldn t
be true. If people could actually choose color it should be easy to change this for the ones who do
attempt to do so. People who are gay or lesbian describe their attraction as something more than just

Conversion therapy is just what it sounds like. This therapy is an attempt to make a child straight. To

Thematic Analys in Andre Dubus’ Killings Essay
Analysis of Killings
The major theme of Andre Dubus Killings is how far someone would go for the person they love. It is
important to note the title of the story is killings and not killers, for the reasoning that the story does
not just focus on two deaths or two murderers but rather the death of marriage, friendship, youth, and
overall, trust.
Richard Strout was married to Mary Ann, who was most likely fed up with his hot temperedness that
always seemed to get him into fist fights. She separated from her husband and while they were going
through the process of divorce she started a new relationship with Frank Fowler, killing all hope of
reconciling her marriage with Richard. In return he became enraged not only in losing his ... Show

Both men tend to work late nights; Trottier was a bartender, so Fowler meeting with him after hours
was an easy alibi. The hardest part was getting Strout to a secluded place, which they were able to do
by conning him at first, saying they had bought him a plane ticket and wanted him out of their lives so
that everyone could move on. After leaving Strout s car at an apartment building in Boston, they lead
Strout to a pre dug hole in a wooded area where Fowler kills him. The gun kicked in Matt s hand, and
the explosion of the shot surrounded him...Richard Strout, squirming on his belly pushed himself
towards the woods. Then Matt went to him and shot him once in the back of the head (106).
In this story, Dubus invites the reader to mull over the disparity between people s ethical responsibility
to society and the primal urge to protect and avenge their loved ones. At the end of the story, Matt tells
Ruth what happened, but it is clear that he feels deep remorse for the action he has taken. He, his wife
and friend Trottier will be forever scarred by the responsibility of keeping the secret of murder.
Nevertheless, Dubus does not judge Matt and label him either a hero or a sinner; he simply presents
the ethical problem to the reader.
The story begins while Matt Fowler is at his youngest son, Frank s, funeral where the author uses the
literary element of third person limited omniscient

The Flat Earth Model During Europe s Dark Ages
There has been many models of the universe over time. During this paper, I will describe four of the
models, along with evidence and observations that supported them. One of the four models is the flat
earth model. This model is portrayed as a flat surface enclosed in a dome, where the sun, moon, and
stars move across the dome. The sky appears as merely a curtain to conceal the heavens. Some
observations that support this model are the fact that the earth does indeed appear flat when a person
looks at it, and the Sun and Moon arc across the sky. The flat earth model was created in the 12th
century during Europe s Dark ages, and was heavily influenced by the bible and Catholic church. The
bible speaks of the dome of the heavens and the corners

The scratching only gave her momentary relief before the urge to scratch just grew bigger making the

doctors thought that the only way to get rid of the itch was to cut off the function to the nerves where

Persuasive Essay On Privatization Of Water
Water is a utility service for many people since its treatment, distribution, and recycling is funded by
the taxpayer. Water is also a scarce commodity among some communities around the world.
Privatization of water would allow firms to make it a profitable venture. Both domestic and global
business environments have interesting ethical dilemmas to navigate. Peter Brabeck, the former Nestle
CEO noted that water is not a basic human right but a commodity that should be privatized and
controlled. Although the Universal Bill of Human Rights declares that withholding the resource takes
away human dignity it fails to specifically grant the right to water. However, if water is a basic human
right, it should be justly and freely available to all. Therefore, water is a right entitled to all human
beings and thus should not be privatized.
Proponents of water privatization assert that private production of water is advantageous for both
taxpayers and consumers. Brabeck, on his part explains that people do not use water for hydration and
hygiene, which leads to wastage. Privatization of water would lead to price increases thus more
conservation. It would also foster sustainable development among developing regions. Further, private
companies are better at maintaining infrastructure than public companies in addition to increasing
oversight.

Satire of the Knight in the Prologue and Knight s Tale of...
Satire. Satire is a biting literary tool, one that Geoffery Chaucer used liberally when he wrote his
Canterbury Tales. Webster s New World Dictionary says that satire is the use of ridicule, sarcasm, etc.
to attack vices, follies, etc. Using that definition, I think that all of the pilgrims in the Canterbury Tales
are satirized to some extent; some of the satirizations are more subtle than others. The Knight is one of
the pilgrims that is more subtly satirized.
Chaucer satirizes knights and chivalry in two different ways: in the prologue and in the Knight s Tale.
The first way in the prologue is with the pilgrim Knight s character. Chaucer wanted to present a
realistic knight, but he also wanted to give the Knight some very ... Show more content on

Hodges, featured in April 1995 edition of The Chaucer Review, Hodges examines the reasons behind
Chaucer s decisions on the clothing of his Knight. After examining the introduction of the Knight s
character in the General Prologue of the Canterbury Tales, Ms. Hodges said that Chaucer intended his
Knight to be the one true to life portrait of a knight of the 14th century an every knight of sorts. She
also concluded that Chaucer wanted to go against the normal chivalric ideal of a knight by presenting
a knight as he really might have been: a basically good person, but with imperfections. I disagree with
Hodges about Chaucer s intentions when characterizing the knight. I don t think the knight was meant
to be a true to life portrait of the every knight .
I think that the reason Hodges and I disagree has to do with the scope of our examination. Hodges was
mostly examining the Knight s clothing, with only references to the rest of the Knight s description in
the prologue, and only briefly mentions the Knight s Tale. I am looking at the Knight in a more
general sense, and looking at clues in the entire description and the tale.
One of the generalizations Hodges makes is that Chaucer s Knight is not romantically ideal. On this
point, we definitely agree. There haven t been many changes in peoples conceptions of the ideal
knight since the 14th century. The ideal knight is the one

Society In Plato s Five Cyclic Stages Of Government
Everything can be defined by placement in a category. In his Republic, Plato defines the changes that
a society undergoes by categorizing the changes into five cyclic stages of government. The first stage
of government, aristocracy, has the aristocrat do their art for the sake of their art. The second stage is
timocracy, wherein the timocrat works for the sake of honor. In the third stage, oligarchy, the oligarch
works under the sway of greed. Democracy, is the fourth stage, where the democrat is slave to the
destructive thirst for freedom. The final, and according to Plato, the worst stage, is tyranny, wherein
the tyrant strives for power. Within the public school system, the lives of high school students mirror
the lives of people within a functioning society. In Hercules High School, the students lives, and
therefore, their classes are also defined by the different governments. These classes include the
aristocratic Medical Careers, the timocratic AP US History, and the tyrannical Dance Production. The
aristocratic Medical Careers, taught by Mr. Crosby, is a class full of students aspiring to be in the
medical field. Plato defines aristocracy as the government of the best, where the several classes [of
people] will receive the proportion of happiness which nature assigns to them. In an aristocracy, the
different social classes are proficient in their own special art, and continually strive to better their art.
Just as each social class receives this proportion

Carpe diem, should this idea be the sole focus of individuals in their even if it means that it will have

question through their own contrasting. In Herrick s To the Virgins, To Make Much of Time the
speaker argues that after an individual has past their youthful stage, their state of mind will grow old
and decrepit. As such should focus on seizing the day as much as possible. To emphasize his
viewpoint Herrick primarily uses nature as a symbol for life and the passage of time while using

Herrick states that the pursuit of enjoyable experiences should be the primary concern of those with
youth as this is the only time in their lives that they will be able to attain such a high degree of joy.
The author depicts the speaker as an older person who is trying to convince individuals with youth to
forgo any risk and not worry about the future. To this effect the speaker uses nature and its seasons to
convince the reader that youth should be used to acquire as many joyful experiences as possible. To do
this, the speaker implores to the youths that Old time is still a flying (Herrick 2) and that Tomorrow
will be dying (Herrick 4). Herrick also uses his rhyme scheme to emphasize the natural and simplicity
of his argument. The author instills a sense of interconnectivity between the genders by using both
Masculine and Feminine rhymes sequentially and thus Herrick moves in directions that challenge
accepted gender configurations. (Landrum 205). The simplicity of the rhyme scheme, ABAB, instills
the reader with a sense of easiness and flow to the author s argument further emphasizing that carpe
diem should be the utmost importance. Furthermore, by internally rhyming That age is the best which
is the first (Herrick 9) the consonance draws the reader to the line and emphasizes the message that
being the first to seize the day is the best. All in all, Herrick used both nature symbolism and simplistic

Chapter Fifteen Week 1 Accounting Summary
I chose to do a section within chapter fifteen which is all about accounting. In my opinion, accounting
is the hardest concentration you can take on. I believe this because there are many different
components that go into even just a simple transaction. Accounting is a comprehensive system for
collecting, analyzing, and communicating financial information to a firm s owners and employees, to
the public, and various regulatory agencies. The basics to accounting in bookkeeping. However,
accounting is much more than just keeping records. Accountants assess the information in order to
make firms make informed decisions. Many people rely on this information including business
managers, employees and unions, investors and creditors, tax authorities, and government regulatory
agencies. Each one of them use the same information but in a different way. For example, business
majors use the information to assess how they are doing and what they would like to do in the future.
However, investors and creditors use the information to assess the risk of both lending money and
potentially investing in them. Information kept by accountants are a vital part of anyone in the
business sector. There are two main fields you can go into. The first is financial accounting. Financial
accounting focuses on the external users. This includes stockholders, agencies, suppliers, and
creditors. When they prepare their reports such as the income statement and the balance sheet, they
focus on the business as a whole. Managerial accounting serves internal users. ... Show more content

Education Reform Across The World
As with most things in society, there is never one right way to approach an issue, and education
reform across the world is one of the many examples that prove this to be true. Over time, there has
been a growing importance on the quality of education across the globe, which is measured through
standardized testing. This new way to measure the quality of education students are getting has grown
to create high competition among the countries as each strives to obtain the highest ranking country
title. However, not all countries are able to compete, let alone test at all, as they are much less
economically stable and usually have a very poor education system in place. While students in the
United States or China are spending many sleepless nights preparing for one of their many
examinations, children in Ghana or Brazil are struggling to merely find a way to both get an education
and help to support their family. The countries that are a part of the developing world are all very
diverse, however many share similar defining characteristics and face similar problems in their

Greg Cantor Research Paper
A famous German mathematician, Georg Cantor is known for discovering and building a hierarchy of
infinite sets according to their cardinal numbers. He is also known for inventing the Cantor set, which
is now a fundamental theory in mathematics. Georg Ferdinand Ludwig Philipp Cantor was born on
March 3, 1845 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to Georg Waldemar Cantor and Maria Anna Bohm. His
father was a German Protestant and his mother was Russian Roman Catholic. Cantor was brought up
as a staunch Protestant and inherited the love for the arts from his parents. He displayed an aptitude
for music at a young age. He also excelled in his studies and was particularly drawn towards
mathematics. He received his education from the University of Berlin ... Show more content on

In addition, he established the importance of one to one correspondence in set theory. He suffered
from mental illness during the later years of his life, yet he remained actively involved in
mathematical works. He was awarded the Sylvester Medal, which is a highly prestigious award in
mathematics. Cantor was also interested in music and arts. It is said that Cantor was a spiritual
personality and believed that God communicated some of his mathematical discoveries to him.
Georg Cantor began his career by teaching in a Berlin girls school for a brief period of time. He then
accepted a position at the University of Halle, where he spent his entire career. He joined as a lecturer
in 1869 and was promoted to assistant professor in 1872, and full professor in 1879. He published a
series of ten papers from 1869 to 1873 in which he dealt with the theory of numbers. A colleague,
Heinrich Eduard Heine, recognized Cantor s capability and encouraged him to work on the theory of
trigonometric series. He started with the work performed on trigonometric series by the German
mathematician Bernhard Riemann a few years ago, and extended it to show that the function of a
complex variable can be represented in only one way by a

Symbols Of Short Stories For Thematic Enhancement
The use of symbols in short stories for thematic enhancement
Symbolism is a widely used literary technique in short stories. The accounts described in short stories
generally promote a certain aspect like religion, love, politics and discrimination among many others.
These are the themes that are promoted by the stories. Symbols and imagery are an aesthetic way of
bringing out these themes and authors have learnt how to effectively use them for thematic purpose, as
they serve a better role as compared to plain words. Symbolism not only adds meaning to the theme in
question, it creates an aura of aestheticism while reading such stories. The uses of symbolism for
thematic purposes in some of the short stories are discussed below.
The theme of American Dream/Nightmare
American dream highlights the epitome of prosperity that the United States promises to any
hardworking individual. Most importantly, the notion of freedom is one that aligns to values of
prosperity. The American nightmare is the opposite of the American dream in the sense that one s
dream can be another person s nightmare; which translates to one persons success could be another
person s bad luck.
That explained, one of the most highly symbolized book which promotes this theme is Kate Chopin s
The Story of an Hour . Through an exquisite display of objects throughout the story, the author
describes the life of a woman s life in the late 1980 s when the wave of freedom was beginning to flow
across America. At the

Carmichael s Theory Of Black Power
More than fifty years after two simple words black and power captured the nations attention, many
people still struggle with what to make of them. The concept of Black Power, despite being around for
decades, still elicits ambivalent reactions in different groups of people ranging from outright
fascination to heightened, emotionally charged memories or ideas. Oftentimes torn between
veneration and vilification of the public and private politics of Black Power adherents, much of the
middle ground is still to be conquered by great parts of the public and scholars alike. These disparate
views illustrate that after almost twenty years of revision, the new scholarship on the Black Power
phase of the African American Freedom Struggle has yet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Published in 2006, Peniel Joseph s first comprehensive account of the history of the Black Power
movement in the United States was written against a historiographical backdrop that paid little or
selective attention to the distinct ideological and activist roots of the Black Power advocates who rose
to influence in the late 1960s. Addressing a narrative that at best illustrated the young activists as
naïve and mislead, and at worst as criminal and self centered demagogues to be blamed for the
dissolution of the interracial civil rights coalition, Joseph centers his works around the emergence of a
rather apolitical Black Nationalism that turns its focus increasingly toward a more activist stance.
Concurrent with the evolution of Malcolm X, the politics of Black Power, Joseph argues, became
more and more politicized, culminating in separate parties, which, independently of the political
mainstream, pursued a politics of African American self determination. In contrast to those scholars
who consider the Black Power phase as part of the long civil rights movement, Joseph defines it as a
distinct form of radical African

Asperger Syndrome Analysis
What is Asperger Syndrome you ask? It is a rare type of autism that affects about two out of 10,000
children. The definition of autism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized
by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and
abstract concepts. It is sometimes difficult to identify an individual having Asperger syndrome as it
hardly shows any physiological effects, but the social impairment and difficulty these individuals
have, create significant delays in language and cognitive development. In this news article, we will
cover the basics of autism, an in depth analysis of Asperger syndrome and treatment now and in the
future. As described earlier, autism is a mental condition. To be more specific, The Autism Society
defines it as a complex developmental disability... and is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a

1. What was the purpose of the New Democracy strategy? Was it successful? Explain.
The purpose of the New Democracy strategy was meant to spur China s political and economic

The land redistribution program for the peasants was positively accepted such that Mao believed that
the next step, the Great Leap Forward, would also be successful. Unfortunately, the program failed
because the rural collectives did not accomplish the economic and administrative tasks assigned to
them. Instead, the program was established in the wrong moment due to bad weather, which
contributed to the downward trend of food production. Furthermore, many peasants resisted the efforts
to work, thus it also contributed to millions of people dying from starvation in the next several years.
3. Was the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution evidence of Communism s strength or its weakness?
Explain.
The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution was an evidence of Communism s strength because a vast
majority of the economic and educational reforms were carried out successfully. By introducing a new
school system and eradicating profit incentives, it enabled Mao to spread its communism ideologies
into practice in China. For instance, instead of teaching children science and humanities, Mao
encouraged schools to teach what s more important, the Little Red Book, which were Mao s maxim
regarding revolutionary passion and good behavior. Moreover, thoughts, culture, habits, and culture

Comparison between Metropolis and Blade Runner
Comparison between Metropolis and Blade Runner
From the silent epic of Fritz Lang Metropolis 1927 to Ridley s Scott s spectacular Blade Runner 1982
the connection between architecture and film has always been intimate. The most apparent concepts
that connect these two films are the overall visuals of both films and their vision of city of the future.
The futuristic city of both Scott and Lang are distinct in their landscapes, geography, and social
structure. These two films sought to envision a future where technology was the basis by which
society functioned. Technology was the culture and the cities would crumble without it. Metropolis
and Blade Runner uses the themes relationships amongst female sexuality and male vision, and
technology. However, Gender roles and technology seems to be the most important part in both films.
Blade Runner became a cult classic. The film may have survived long enough to benefit from a
renewed taste for darker, more violent sci fi. It s appeal has less to do with a fascination for outer
space (which does not feature beyond reference in a few lines of dialogue) than with a vision of earth
and humankind in the near future (Roberts and Wallis Pg 157 8). Both films have a timeless quality to
it, as they are representative of the future of our planet earth. I find it so interesting that even though
these films were made in different times their ideas about the futuristic city and society are almost
identical.
The futuristic aspect of these

The Pros And Cons Of Bombs
Bombs. The ultimate attention grabber has proven to be a weapon of mass destruction against
humanity numerous times throughout the short life of the weapon, even as recent as the bombing in
New York and New Jersey that took place in late September of 2016 prove exactly what they were
intended to prove: that humans are vulnerable in the face of fear. So many weapons have been used to
prove multiple points, so many that it s hard to list them all; racism, sexism, discrimination against
religion and sexuality, drugs and alcohol, all of these factor into the roles of fights everyday. The
continued assaults have caused every single person to question those around them, to be constantly
concerned about whether they ll come home that night or whether the night before was the last night
that they will see someone they love without having been murdered. Although my generation wasn t

Marine Biology Research Paper
Ever since a young age, I have been extremely interested in ocean life. Due to annual summer beach
trips, I was exposed to aquatic life often as a child and became very comfortable in and around water.
My interest in the ocean is the main reason that I can see myself as a marine biologist in the future.
Another trait of mine that contributed to this career choice is that I enjoy working with others, but also
work well independently. For this reason, I want career where I can collaborate ideas among my

UHG Performance Management
Mission, Goals, and Performance Management Today, organizations need to have a clear
understanding of where their organization is and where it needs to be in the future to secure longevity
and financial success (Moore, Ellsworth, Kaufman, 2011). Organizations need to have a performance
management system in place to stay competitive. Therefore, having a well developed performance
management process in place allows the employer and employee to communicate goals, share
information, and establish career growth. Performance management needs to contribute to the success
of the organization while providing a positive impact on the employees. Therefore, the mission, goals
and performance management should coincide with one another. UnitedHealth Group (UHG) was
founded in 1977, and based their organization on health maintenance organizations (HMOs). UHG is
considered the most diversified health care organization in the United States. They have the largest
network s of physicians, and health facilities and caregivers in the United States. They operate in all
50 states and more than 125 other countries around the world (UHG, 2015a). Their operating revenue
is over $130 billion in 2014 and Fortune magazine ranked them No. 14 of the 500 largest U.S.
corporations (UHG, 2015a). UnitedHealth Group s mission is to help people live healthier lives and to
help make the health system work better for everyone (UHG, 2015b). They enhance the performance

Most Dangerous Game Suspense Essay
Throughout the story. The Most Dangerous Game , one way suspense is created is by the description
of the setting. The old tarts call it Ship Trap Island ...Sailors have a curious dread of this place. I don t
know why. Some superstition (24). These few sentences create suspense by how the characters
Rainsford and Whitney describe Ship Trap Island by saying some sailors have a curious dread of this
place. That means that sailors feel uneasy and eerie about coming to this island due to how it s
surroundings make them feel. Superstition is also raised in this case, because there are many myths
that can be told about Ship Trap Island alone that many sailors fear. The reason why this quote creates
suspense is because of the way the island is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These words explain the severity of the situation to a certain degree. The words pull the readers closer
instead of using common small words such as loud, pained and scared which could not cause the same
reactions of curiosity of the words extremity, anguish, and terror. The reason this quote creates
suspense is that it causes the readers a feel of curiosity and to bring up questions such as: What animal
screamed? Why did it scream? Did someone shoot it? Is there another person on this island Rainsford
doesn t know about? The jungle weeds were crushed down and the moss was lacerated; one patch of
weeds was stained crimson. (27) Suspense is created by the clear description of Rainsford s
surroundings. The author used words such as, lacerated and crimson as adjectives to describe the moss
and the weeds. The moss was lacerated means that there was deeps cuts in the moss on the ground.
The weeds stained crimson means that there is now blood on those weeds possibly due some sort of
attack. This creates suspense by causing the readers to also ask questions on what happened, if there
was an attack, if the attack was of a human or an animal and the cause of the attack. It makes the
readers curious on what was there and what happened. The quotes tell the reader that something
important just happened and that could contribute to an event leading up.
The author also creates suspense through foreshadowing. What perils that tangle of trees and

The Five Imponents Of Alpha Kappa Alpha
In the 1900s, segregation and male dominance were a big part of American Society. African American
women were often underestimated as well as neglected of their respect and authority. Ethel
Hedgeman, who was a student at Howard University, believed that it was essential to create an
organization for a group of women who were willing to use their talents and strengths for the benefit
of others, but at the same time learn to value and respect themselves. She envisioned that this group
would focus on interaction, encouragement, and ethical growth between the members, and that is
exactly what Alpha Kappa Alpha has done ever since she created it. In 1908, AKA also known as the
sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first African American sorority was created. Members of Alpha
Kappa Alpha communicate and express their common ideas and goals in their own unique ways.
Alpha Kappa Alphas represent service and culture more than anything. Ever since AKA was founded
in 1908, their motto has been By Culture and By Merit , and the mission of the sorority goes along
with their motto. According to the mission tab of the official AKA website, service to all mankind, to
cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among
college women, and to alleviate problems concerning girls and women to maintain a progressive
ingress in college life are the five components of Alpha Kappa Alpha s mission to stand by their motto
(Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc., Par. 1).

  • 2. The Boston Fbi Field Office Building The room was filled with chatter and arguments. The mass murder that was happening in the states of the New England region was the center of the discussion in the Boston FBI field office building. Officer Alecia Harrison was sitting silently in the room while the roars of the others burdened her ears. It was a late night and the agents were talking all at once about their opinions on the situation. She sighed, looked around the room and shouted over the silence for everyone to be quiet. The individuals in the room grew silent as they looked at the young woman who had just interrupted their banter. Listen, this isn t helping the situation. She felt a chill run down her spine as she had a sense that someone was watching her from afar. Slowly turning to look behind her, she looked out in the distance of the woods by her house. When she felt certain that no one was there she proceeded the rest of the way to her front door. The young woman opened up her door and immediately felt that sense of uneasiness again even though her home was full of light. She could hear the water running in the bathroom and figured that her boyfriend, James, was just taking his usual night shower. She went into the kitchen to get a quick drink of water. As she drank the cool liquid she felt an immense feeling of relief. She advanced toward the bathroom. She walked down the hallway heading towards the closed bathroom door. Alecia felt a sense of panic and anxiety when she felt her foot become slightly submerged in a liquid on the floor. She flung the bathroom door open and felt her throat tighten at the scene. Her loving boyfriend was laying in the bathtub clearly dead with the water overflowing over the sides of the tub. His eyes were glazed over, looking almost made out of glass, and his skin had started to become discolored. Letting out a guttural scream, she ran to the side of the tub and tried to lift him out. However, she knew it was too late and he was too heavy for her to lift. She sunk to the wet floor with tears falling from her eyes as she turned off ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some devices can do many things, like a phone can make calls or get on the internet. Other forms of technology have a greater impact on our lives, for example, medical equipment. Ray Bradbury demonstrates technologies advantages for humans everyday lives through The Veldt and The Pedestrian. Undeniably, technology can have a negative effect on everyday lives, especially for children. Ray Bradbury shows how mixing spoiled children with technology is never a good combination, And brush my own teeth and comb my hair and give myself a bath? (The Veldt, page 7) In the story, Peter Hadley is livid about hearing he might actually have to do everyday essentials for himself. While a small amount of help in life is fine, too much can lead to laziness and the lack of knowledge on daily chores. Everyday life is changed for the family in this house when the house helped cook food and clothe them. The technology to create a house that cooks is cutting edge. It is a concept people like Bradbury could only dream of. The convenience of a house that cooks opens free time to start a hobby or just relax from the stress of everyday life. • 5. Teaching Tenure, The Most Common One Is Job Protection Essay While there are several reasons educators say they need tenure, the most common one is job protection. This could possibly stem from the time before tenure when educators were fired for any reason. Many like to point out that the time before was possibly one of the worst times to be a teacher because of all the petty reasons one could have been fired. For example, if one was from a different political party than the principal then said educator could be fired. Many female educators like to point out how prior to 1886 they could have been fired for wearing pants and how previous to coherent tenure laws, pregnant women were required to take two unpaid years off of work. Unfortunately many of the reasons cited for the terminating of teachers is being ineffective. While the meaning of the word not producing an significant or desired effect seems black and white there are many shades of gray in between when discussing tenure. One major question when trying to determine effectiveness is how exactly it should be determined. While it seems easy for school districts to determine who is and is not effective in their schools, it is hard for them to do so and stay within the law. Many laws protect teachers from being fired without a due process, meaning that tenured educators about to be fired are entitled to a trial of their peers. This requires several different lawyers, substantial evidence, and of course copious amounts of money. While this is a hassle for school districts, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Sarah-Elizabeth Atunrase Final Paper Sarah Elizabeth Atunrase Final Paper 5/9/18 Final Paper The two behavioral concepts I recognized in the DeWaal paper were true altruism and empathy. Altruism is defined as altruism without obvious advantages for the actor (DeWaal). Reciprocal altruism is the act of giving aid or preforming an act of kindness in order to receive delayed benefits or even immediate benefits (Lecture 23: Empathy and Altruism). In order to participate in altruistic acts the species must have empathy. Empathy is important because in order to perform these acts of kindness one has to understand the emotion of another and be able to imagine what someone else is going through. Dewaal discusses how altruism in animals must stem from something other than actions with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, he allowed his new friend to protect him and help him ward off competition when it came to eating. Because geese mate for life the tortoise was lucky enough to find a companion and protection. It can t be determined if the tortoise understood the actions of the goose. I choose this example because it lacks the feel good feeling or helping someone in need of aid. I do not see examples of empathetic behavior in this scenario. Another relationship that was less altruistic was the dog and the cheetah. This is because they never performed beneficial acts at their expense in order to help each other. They had companionship built over many years no doubt, but they appeared more like orphaned siblings who have developed their own ways of communication and no true acts of altruism or reciprocal altruism were demonstrated. As outlined previously, acts of altruism require the actor to have self awareness and the ability to have empathy for another. I think it is because Atlas the Gibbon and the Capuchin troop are cultural close and their forms of communication and playfulness allow them to understand each other altruism and empathy are easiest to spot in their ... Statics displaying proceedings in the TCC over a 10 year period dropped from 1,778 in 1995, to only 390 cases in 2004, a drop in 78%. However, these statistics are not as dramatic as they sound, as many trials in 1995 would not come to court these days. All this changed due to the introduction of the Woolf Reforms, embodied in the 1998 Civil Procedures Rules (CPR) which came into force on the 26th April 1999. A consequence of this is litigants must fulfil numerous requirements of protocols involving alerting the other party of the nature of one s case prior to commencing proceedings. This weeds out disputes that previously a decade ago would not have intended to go to a trial. CPR had an effect across the court system, proceedings dropped dramatically. Within two years of the reform, civil litigation overall was down by 37%. Whether you are on England s side or American s you cannot deny the fact of the bettering of the world, with America rising as the world s new superpower. But before all this America had to win a war, a war against its parents, the then, worldly superpower. A great introduction is The Fifth of March by Ann Rinaldi. This story is about a fourteen year old girl who is forced to choose between loyalist or patriot, in her case she is faced with many people who influence the final decision. Three great examples of character traits that Rachel (main character) grows and adapts to, are confidence, empathy, and perseverance. Before the essay is brought to a start an intro to the background of the US is needed. The King of England sent the Americans to the new world to grow his power, but the Americans felt left out in the decision making so they revolted. The formed their own country, the King still believing he was all and powerful didn t like this. DSCA Command Relationships during Katrina SFC Marson, Kellen Master Leader Course Class 18 001 Introduction On August 29th, 2005, Hurrican Katrina, a Category 4 hurricane, made landfall. Katrina left severe destruction along the Golf Coast and evenutally breached the New Orleans levee system putting the city under water. The death toll was estimated at 1,245 people and an estimated $105 billion dollars in damage occured (Knabb 2011). During Katrina, command relationships failed because of political differences between President Bush and Louisiana Governor, Kathleen Blanco as to who should command the National Guard, delays at the National Guard Bureau (NGB) in deploying troops and equipment, and failing to create a unity of effort between National Guard and Active Duty forces. National Guard The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina left tens of thousands of people in New Orleans without adequate water, food, shelter, and physical security. Law enforcement was in disarray as 200 New Orleans Police officers left their post. The Louisiana National Guard was short on personnel and much of their equipment was unserviceable due to flooding. Thousands of people needed help and critical distribution of resources from Defense Support of Civilian Authorities (DSCA) failed. As New Orleans spiraled out of control, looting and crime were becoming a serious problem. The Louisiana National Guard focused on rescue missions, rather than keeping Law Order. The public began to blame President Bush and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco for their poor response to the recovery efforts. In a meeting on Airforce One, President Bush tried to convince Governor Blanco to federalize the National Guard in order to have all forces under one central command. Governor Blanco refused this offer, believing that Bush s attempt to federalize the Louisiana National Guard was just attempt to blame her for post Katrina problems (Farazmand, 2014). Richard Strout was married to Mary Ann, who was most likely fed up with his hot temperedness that always seemed to get him into fist fights. He, his wife and friend Trottier will be forever scarred by the responsibility of keeping the secret of murder. Water is also a scarce commodity among some communities around the world. Privatization of water would allow firms to make it a profitable venture. Both domestic and global business environments have interesting ethical dilemmas to navigate. Peter Brabeck, the former Nestle CEO noted that water is not a basic human right but a commodity that should be privatized and controlled. Although the Universal Bill of Human Rights declares that withholding the resource takes away human dignity it fails to specifically grant the right to water. However, if water is a basic human right, it should be justly and freely available to all. Therefore, water is a right entitled to all human beings and thus should not be privatized. Proponents of water privatization assert that private production of water is advantageous for both taxpayers and consumers. Brabeck, on his part explains that people do not use water for hydration and hygiene, which leads to wastage. Privatization of water would lead to price increases thus more conservation. It would also foster sustainable development among developing regions. Further, private companies are better at maintaining infrastructure than public companies in addition to increasing oversight. Webster s New World Dictionary says that satire is the use of ridicule, sarcasm, etc. to attack vices, follies, etc. Using that definition, I think that all of the pilgrims in the Canterbury Tales are satirized to some extent; some of the satirizations are more subtle than others. The Knight is one of the pilgrims that is more subtly satirized. Chaucer satirizes knights and chivalry in two different ways: in the prologue and in the Knight s Tale. After examining the introduction of the Knight s character in the General Prologue of the Canterbury Tales, Ms. Hodges said that Chaucer intended his Knight to be the one true to life portrait of a knight of the 14th century an every knight of sorts. She also concluded that Chaucer wanted to go against the normal chivalric ideal of a knight by presenting a knight as he really might have been: a basically good person, but with imperfections. I disagree with Hodges about Chaucer s intentions when characterizing the knight. I don t think the knight was meant to be a true to life portrait of the every knight . Hodges was mostly examining the Knight s clothing, with only references to the rest of the Knight s description in the prologue, and only briefly mentions the Knight s Tale. In the third stage, oligarchy, the oligarch works under the sway of greed. Democracy, is the fourth stage, where the democrat is slave to the destructive thirst for freedom. To this effect the speaker uses nature and its seasons to convince the reader that youth should be used to acquire as many joyful experiences as possible. To do this, the speaker implores to the youths that Old time is still a flying (Herrick 2) and that Tomorrow will be dying (Herrick 4). • 37. Essay on The Tragedy of Jean Rhys Wide Sargasso Sea The Tragedy of Wide Sargasso Sea In Jean Rhys novel Wide Sargasso Sea, whether Antoinette Cosway really goes mad in the end is debatable. Nevertheless, it is clear that her life is tragic. The tragedy comes from her numerous pursuits for love and a sense of belonging, and her failure at each and every one of these attempts. As a child Antoinette, is deprived of parental love. Her father is a drunkard and has many mistresses and illegitimate children. According to Daniel Cosway s account, old Cosway is cruel to his own son. Education Reform Across The World As with most things in society, there is never one right way to approach an issue, and education reform across the world is one of the many examples that prove this to be true. Over time, there has been a growing importance on the quality of education across the globe, which is measured through standardized testing. This new way to measure the quality of education students are getting has grown to create high competition among the countries as each strives to obtain the highest ranking country title. However, not all countries are able to compete, let alone test at all, as they are much less economically stable and usually have a very poor education system in place. While students in the United States or China are spending many sleepless nights preparing for one of their many examinations, children in Ghana or Brazil are struggling to merely find a way to both get an education and help to support their family. The countries that are a part of the developing world are all very diverse, however many share similar defining characteristics and face similar problems in their education system. These nations are typically those that were colonized by western nations and now suffer extreme economic polarization and political instability as a result. Their economies are often based on agriculture and the extraction of natural resources, which causes problems as they are exporting goods of a lower value and importing goods of a higher value. Addressing a narrative that at best illustrated the young activists as naïve and mislead, and at worst as criminal and self centered demagogues to be blamed for the dissolution of the interracial civil rights coalition, Joseph centers his works around the emergence of a rather apolitical Black Nationalism that turns its focus increasingly toward a more activist stance. Concurrent with the evolution of Malcolm X, the politics of Black Power, Joseph argues, became more and more politicized, culminating in separate parties, which, independently of the political mainstream, pursued a politics of African American self determination. Comparison between Metropolis and Blade Runner Comparison between Metropolis and Blade Runner From the silent epic of Fritz Lang Metropolis 1927 to Ridley s Scott s spectacular Blade Runner 1982 the connection between architecture and film has always been intimate. The most apparent concepts that connect these two films are the overall visuals of both films and their vision of city of the future. The futuristic city of both Scott and Lang are distinct in their landscapes, geography, and social structure. These two films sought to envision a future where technology was the basis by which society functioned. Technology was the culture and the cities would crumble without it.
