Walter Ruttman
A secondary important figure in defining and examining the absolute film movement within Germany
during the 1920s is Walter Ruttman. Unlike Richter he began as a student of architecture and graphic
design, which shaped his identity as an experimental filmmaker and accounts for the prominence of
shapes and lines within his films. He began his career as filmmaker directly after his release from a
hospital in Berlin for treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder caused by his experiences in WW1.
His works are said to be the very first examples of completely abstract film, meaning that they are
composed solely of the arrangement of various forms (geometric and arbitrary) with no outside
reference to anything or to any particular meaning. His first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In his first two Opus shorts he used the paint on glass technique employing oil paints in different
streaks, curves, blobs and lines of various colors. Unlike Richter s Rhythm 21, Opus I and II
incorporate different colored shapes as well as tints and tones over the lens of the camera which have
been said to evoke a certain mood within the rhythmic movements. What we see is basically a dance
of both these soft arbitrary forms moving around the frame as well as (towards the end of I and
moreso in II) other hard edged triangular shapes that are not quite as organic. Moving through his four
films within the series we can see both a refinement of his technique in addition to new approaches
that seem to have been influenced by Constructivist perspectives. In Opus II he uses a technique
known as kinestasis, which uses movement of the camera to make still figures appear to have motion.
By Opus IV all color has been removed, shapes have lost their organic quality and are only geometric
(as they are in Richter s works) and there is much less evocation of feeling. Instead he shows only the
essential capacity of the camera as a device and uses only light, framing and time as his

training can continue as long as a student is initiating the interaction. Observation of behavior will be
for the entire 6 hour day to measure the effects of the treatment. A parental survey will be given at the
onset of treatment and at the end of the 6th week.
Materials
PECS icons and a PECS book have been obtained as well as a laminator and this researcher will select
5 icons measuring 2 x 2 with a Velcro adhesive on the back. The icons have been predetermined via
reviewing previous session notes to determine what factors seem to be most linked to maladaptive
behaviors. For example, this student is highly motivated for the iPad, so there ... Show more content

Physical Aggression Defined as striking others with any part of the client s body such as hitting,
kicking, scratching, pinching, head butting, grabbing, throwing objects at others and/or using an object
to strike another person.
Tantrum Defined as the occurrence of one or both of the above listed topographies of behavior that
continue to occur for longer than 10 seconds. A tantrum ends after 30 seconds of appropriate behavior
(e.g., sitting quietly, watching television, playing with toy, etc.).
Communication Defined as vocal behavior which may be echoic or intelligible which is in response to
a stimulus. Vocal approximations to words will also be counted as a vocal attempt such as pees for
please .
Independent Variable The independent variable for this study will be the PECS exchange, which has
been modified from two trainers to one. The researcher will play the part of both communicative
partner and physical prompter, if necessary. The exchange will consist of the subject picking up the
2x2 icon, reaching towards the researcher and placing the icon in the researcher s hand. This will
constitute one instance of PECS regardless of whether it is initiated by the student or the researcher.
During the treatment phase CG s mother will be reminded daily to make her duplicate icons available
to him at all times.
Design
A multiple baseline across behaviors design will be utilized to ascertain whether or not the use of

ABSTRACT
Background: With the incidence and the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) increasing
worldwide and its economic repercussions, a detailed haematological workup of such patients is
necessary to detect the type of anaemia, as there is a general tendency to consider anaemia to be of the
normocytic normochromic type. However in India, a co existing iron deficiency is also common.
Anaemia is an independent risk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Materials and Methods: This observational study included 100 patients of chronic kidney disease, who
were included, irrespective of their age, sex, aetiology and their clinical profiles. A thorough clinical
examination and evaluation were conducted, which included serum iron studies. By using Chi square
analysis, the parameters which were used for a statistical correlation were the levels of anaemia with
respect to the stages of the kidney disease, the type and the severity of anaemia, thrombocytopaenia
with the bleeding time, leucocytosis and elevated ESR values.
Results: Although most of the anaemia was of the normocytic type, nearly a third of the patients had
microcytic hypochromic and a mixed type of anaemia. Those with a microcytic hypochromic picture
correlated with a severe degree of anaemia. The elevated Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) levels
were more distributed in the lower levels of the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR). There was no
association between the platelet levels and the bleeding time. The leucocytosis was not necessarily
associated with infections.
Conclusions: It is pertinent to detect and treat subclinical iron deficiency in patients with CKD and to
not over investigate the minor haematological variations.

Backround Of The Study On Victims Of Stalking
Chapter One: Introduction
Backround of the Study Stalking, according to The National Institute of Justice, October, 2007, is
defined as
a crime of power and control, is conservatively defined as a course of conduct directed
to a specific person that involves repeated (two or more occasions) visual or physical
proximity, non consensual communication or verbal, written, or implied threats, or a
combination thereof that would cause a reasonable person fear . Stalking behaviors may
also include persistence patterns of leaving or sending the victim unwanted items or
presents that may range from seemingly romantic to bizarre, following or laying in wait
or the victim, damaging or threatening to damage the victims property, defaming the
victim character, or harassing the victim via the internet by posting by posting personal
information or spreading rumors about the victim. Stalking can be carried out by two
methods in person and electronic mechanisms (phone, fax, GPS, cameras, computer
spyware and the internet/social media). According to a National Institute of Justice
violence survey in 2007, 1 in 6 women and 1 in 19 men nationwide have been stalked
during their lifetime. For both females and males victims, stalking was often committed
by people they knew or with whom they had a relationship. Two thirds of the females
victims of stalking (66.2%) reported stalking by a current or former intimate partner and

Naval Academy Observation Report
Life at the Academy especially the first year is tough. There are days the midshipmen will love it and
other days when they hate it. Eventually I understand that the loves out weigh the hates, however, in
the beginning, during plebe year, it may feel overwhelming to many of them. As a lot of Naval
Academy graduates say about the Naval Academy, It s a good place to be from, but not a good place
to be. Concerning that, there were some regulations that I only discovered with further observation.
For example, at all formal meals, plebes only use the front three or four inches of their chairs, sitting
at attention, with the exception of chair in the academic buildings and plebe/Fourth Class dorms. Also
when walking down corridors they can only use the center alley and chop (quick step with high knees)
with eyes in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also when eating at King Hall, they must not speak unless addressed by an upperclassman. If a plebe
needs to speak, he must first extend a fist (known as putting out the paw ) for permission to speak.
Alas, for the plebes, those are only the rules which apply in King Hall. There are also many other rules
they struggle with on the entire academy. Directly before a formal meal, during their formation outside
of Bancroft, the midshipmen must recite the menu, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. When
plebes are asked, How long have you been in the Navy, they must answer, All me blooming life, sir!
Me mother was a mermaid, me father was King Neptune. When plebes are asked, How s the cow, they
must answer, Sir, she walks, she talks, she s full of chalk. Although these myriad of disjointed
memorizations, ludicrous tasks and perpetual Panic mode as a plebe may seem to have very little to do
with the profession of arms, the sole purpose of the regulations is to make them into better officers as
a whole. In the real world, these traditions encourage the quick execution of orders, discipline,
knowledge of your environment, and respect

Social Reforms During The 1840s
Social Reforms of 1840s
There were so many reforms that happened during the 1830s and 1840s; many of which made a great
impact, some didn t make any impact, and some had an impact that took place a great deal later.
Below are just some of the movements that were believed, created and fought for:
 William Lloyd Garrison wrote The Liberator to speak for abolition, called for immediate freedom
without compensation
 Frederick Douglass runaway and freed slave, eloquent speaker who claimed slavery was a sin
 Sojourner Truth runaway and freed slave, journeyed around preaching for abolition
 Angelina and Sarah Grimke objected male opposition to their antislavery work
 Lucretia Mott firmly campaigned after getting barred from an antislavery convention
 Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony campaigned for women s right to vote, property
rights, and legal rights
 Mary Hunt head of Women s Christian Temperance Movement and fought strongly for the effect of
alcohol on voters
 Susan B. Anthony fought widely for the banning of alcohol
 Dorothea Dix led the movement, successfully won legislation in Massachusetts to provide aid to the
insane
 Horace Mann led the movement, wanted to help unruly children become civilized, and also
achieved public education
In 1831, Garrison founded The Liberator, a militant abolitionist newspaper that was the country s first
publication to demand an immediate end to slavery. On the front page of the first issue, he

Human Gender and Mathematics Essay
Human Gender and Mathematics
Is there a difference in the mathematical ability between men and women? Historians have no precise
method of quantifying or comparing their individual accomplishments (Olsen). Not only in
mathematics, but also in many other career areas in the past, women were looked upon as inferior to
their male counterparts. Women were not encouraged to pursue a career in mathematics. Historically,
women were seen working around the home, cleaning the house, taking care of the children, and
cooking the food. Even if they did pursue a career in mathematics, their research was sometimes
viewed as questionable. I will defend the fact that, Women have the same capabilities of achieving in
mathematics than men do. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hypatia was born in 370 in Alexandria, Egypt. Hypatia was known as a mathematician, scientist, and
philosopher. She was credited with the invention of the astrolabe, a device used in studying
astronomy. However, she was better known for her work in mathematics, primarily for her ideas on
conic sections. Her concepts developed ideas on hyperbolas, parabolas, and ellipses. Hypatia was the
first woman to have such a profound impact on the survival of early thought in mathematics (Scott).

The Dynamics Of Prosecuting Attorneys. Prosecuting Attorneys
The Dynamics of Prosecuting Attorneys
Prosecuting attorneys have been enforcing law and order for many years, trying criminal cases while
representing local, state, or federal governments. They interview witnesses and victims, look at police
reports, and do legal research to plan prosecutions for cases. After the information is collected, it is
used in court to present a case against the defendant. Most of the time cases are begun by reviewing
police reports and conducting research. To be able to be successful in this field you have to know how
to conduct research and be excellent at problem solving. ( Prosecuting ).

There are some barriers before starting law school. Before you are accepted into the law school of
your choosing you must pass the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). To become a prosecutor, you
have to earn a bachelor s degree and a Juris Doctor Degree. After finishing law school, you have to
pass the states bar exam. Passing the bar exam is the only way to get a license to practice.
( Prosecuting ).
Potential prosecutors should focus on criminal law while earning their degree. Criminal law is a
system of law that is devoted to the punishment of people who commit crimes. In general, Criminal
law asks and answers three questions: 1. Did an individual commit a crime? 2. Which crime did an
individual commit? 3. Does the individual have a defense? The way each state prosecutes criminals is
different because each state has its own criminal code. Which means each state decides what
punishment is appropriate for each crime. Criminal codes vary greatly among state and federal
government. Some statues resemble the common law criminal code, but others, like the New York
Penal Law, almost mimic the Model Penal Code (MPC). Common law is when law is taken from
judicial decisions instead of from written law. Model Penal Law was influential work that played a
very important part in the revision and process of arranging laws.

Difficult Intravenus Access Essay
Difficult intra venous access is cauterized as multiple attempts and/or the prediction of special veins
that are easier to access and maintain peripheral venous access. Predictive issues for difficult IV
access include obesity, history of IV drug use, and edema. Factors associated with difficult IV access
in adult include chemotherapy, multiple prior hospitalization, and diabetes. [1] it is noted that
intravenous cannulation that s done by more experienced emergency medical staff was associated with
higher success rate. IV cannulas with smaller gates were commonly associated with failure
cannulation. This result was concluded to be due to the choice of person applying IV cannulation, and
the predicted difficulties of insertion. [2] Intravenous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

cannula insertion. Success rate and time to apply intra venous cannula is mandatory to obtain the best
resuscitation of critical patients. Difficult intra venous cannulation can be challenging even to the most
experienced emergency nurse. Central venous catheterization (CVC) is an alternative route for
cannulation in patients with difficult intra venous access. CVC provides a fast effective intra venous
access for flued resuscitation and for Central Venous Pressure monitoring. However, venous
thrombosis, catheter associated bloodstream infection, arterial puncture and pneumothorax are most
common Central Venous Catheterization (CVC)

The Encoding of Contextual Fear Conditioning
The formation of new memories requires protein synthesis dependent changes in synaptic structure
and plasticity in the hippocampus. Studies in humans and animals suggest that these memories are
initially stored in hippocampus but later transferred to cortex for permanent storage. This phenomenon
is described as systems consolidation of memories. While the specific role for new protein synthesis in
hippocampus in early encoding of memories is established, whether protein synthesis in medial
prefrontal cortex play a major role in encoding of memories is unclear. To address this question, we
used contextual fear conditioning (CFC) of mouse, a behavior training that induce long lasting
memories. A single training session produces robust lifelong memory (8) that can be measured using
automated procedures (9). Several studies have used CFC training as a model to study hippocampal
cortical communications and mechanisms underlying systems consolidation of memories. Contextual
fear memories are initially stored in hippocampus and then moved to medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC)
for long term storage.
We assume that if encoding of contextual fear memories require protein synthesis at both
hippocampus and PFC, we will be able to identify translationally active mRNAs in hippocampus and
PFC. Because RNAs associated with polyribosomes indicate translational activation, we first isolated
polyribosomes from mPFC and hippocampus at two time points (one hour and six hours, hereafter T1

ZIKV Case Study
Relative to many other viruses previously studied in this course, discovery of the Zika Virus (ZIKV) is
a fairly recent development. ZIKV was first isolated in 1947 from the serum of rhesus monkeys
located in the Zika Forest of Uganda. These monkeys were displaying signs of fever and served as a
sentinel animal for the surveillance of Yellow Fever Virus (YFV). Approximately nine months later,
ZIKV was isolated in the same region from the Aedes africanus mosquito species (Seitz, 2016). ZIKV
primarily infected monkeys in an enzootic mosquito monkey mosquito cycle, with only occasional
transmission to humans. In 1952, ZIKV was first reported in humans, but remained confined to
Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. Very few reports ... Show more content on

ZIKV preferentially infects and injures neural progenitor cells (Tang et al., 2016). A study in Rio de
Janeiro tracked 88 pregnant women who reported potential symptoms of ZIKV infection (Brasil et al.,
2016). A Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test confirmed a ZIKV infection in 72 of these women
who were between 5 and 38 weeks of gestation. Fetal ultrasonography was performed in 42 ZIKV
positive and 12 ZIK V negative pregnant women. In 12 of the 42 ZIKV positive and none of the 16
ZIK V negative pregnant women, fetal abnormalities including central nervous system defects were
observed. These studies led World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), and other health authorities to publish recommendations for pregnant women
living in countries affected by the ZIKV epidemic. Because of these recent ZIKV outbreaks and the
potential for complications resulting from infection, ZIKV is an important emerging pathogen. ZIKV
is an arbovirus of the Flaviviridae family, which includes dengue, West Nile, yellow fever, and
Japanese encephalitis viruses, that causes a mosquito borne disease transmitted by the Aedes genus of

Elements Of Reasoning And Reasoning
The elements of reasoning were created to make people aware of their personal thoughts, as well as
other people. These elements include: purpose, point of view, assumptions, implications, data,
inferences, concepts, solve a problem (Paul, Elder, 2012, pg.68). No element is more important than
the other for reasoning and they all work together. Elements of reasoning are connected to the art of
critical thinking. Critical thinking has been defined many ways and is often described in association
with problem solving and decision making (Lovelace, Eggers, Dyck, 2016, p. 101). Problem solving

Schopenhauer Doctrine Of Transcendentalism
The Schopenhauer s doctrine of Transcendental Idealism states that the existence of the world as

fundamental idea of Schopenhauer s transcendental idealism is that the external world the world of

Women, African Americans And Literature
Women, African Americans Literature in the Progressive Era One of the greatest turning points in
American history was the Progressive era due to the advancements and social responses led by women
and people of color. Many depictions of this era through secondary sources can be used to see the
conflicts faced by the individuals of the time period and the political movement that ensued right after.
Many favorable outcomes resulted from this time period including the start of reformation from
women and people of color, and new entertainment source being literature. The nineteenth century

The welfare of the city was a priority for many women during this time period. Compared to some
progressive husbands, the wives had a tendency to be more independent and efficient workers.
Ultimately, with the help of the progressive movement, women gained the right to vote on August 18,
1920. In the mid 19th century, the suffrage movement took on a new life. Due to the fact that women
could not vote, they got politically involved. Beginning in the year of1890, women were creating
organizations including the General Federation of Women s Club, and the National Ladies
Government Union. Strikes were being held for women solidarity, including the Triangle Shortwaist

the new libraries and schools in their communities. The role of women in the household and

Essay On Soccer In America
When you travel to Madrid, Spain you look around and you see soccer, otherwise known as futbol
there, everywhere possible. On the day of a soccer game, the streets suddenly empty, the stadiums fill,
and people everywhere else sit by their televisions and root on their favorite soccer club. As they cheer
on their teams, they understand the game and get into the game like one would do for football in
America. When you travel 4500 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, it s a whole different lifestyle.
America s flip their TV on and scroll through the ESPN and sports section and see nothing but
basketball, baseball, football, and occasionally a hockey game. If you are a fan of soccer though it s
obvious, you aren t going to find anything on TV having to do with it. Why must soccer be so
overlooked in the United States? Why is the world s most popular sport so cared about so little in
America? If you are talking about sports in a normal American setting, teams like the Yankees, Red
Sox, Cowboys, or Lakers will most usually come up. These are obviously the most common sports
teams in the US today, but why don t we hear about teams like LA Galaxy, Real Madrid, or
Manchester United? This is simply because soccer isn t respected in the United ... Show more content

Periodontal disease is very common, and is widely regarded as the second most common dental
disease worldwide after dental caries. Periodontitis is initiated by gram negative tooth associated

treatment modality for periodontal health is scaling and root planing either during surgical
intervention or in a non surgical approach with the endpoint of bringing a root surface that is
biologically acceptable for healing processes. [1] These mechanical procedures are accomplished by

Social Status Essay
I think that my three most important ascribed social statuses are that I am an American, I am eighteen
years old, and I am a white male. Ascribed social statuses are the social status that a person is assigned
at birth or given later in life. First and foremost, being an American is something that many people
take for granted. We have the chance to obtain a great life that not everyone has the chance at. It has
opened so many doors for me including an education, security, opportunity, and so many more.
Growing up an American has taught me many lessons. I have learned that while not everything is easy,
I could have it much worse off, and I should be grateful for the opportunities that present themselves. I
have also learned not to take anything for granted. I am very blessed with the life I have, but nothing
is guaranteed. You have to enjoy the good things in life, and embrace the hard ones. One more lesson
is that life is full of choices, and the life that you end up with is more or less a result of those choices. I
m not saying that it is a completely fair playing field, but I do believe that everyone generally has the
opportunity at a successful life. The next important ascribed social status is my age. Obviously this is
ever changing as time ticks on, but it has a major influence on how I live my life. Because I am
eighteen years old I am still in school, and I will continue to be in some sort of school for quite some
time. I do not have a quality job, and I still

The Discovery Of Saudi Arabia
I asked a friend of mine to come with me to visit the Asian Art Museum. I told him that the Museum is
exhibiting pieces of recent archeological discoveries of Saudi Arabia. Since we were both Saudis, we
felt curious to explore the museum for the first time. When we arrived to the museum, we paid 15
dollars each because we were adults. It was not until we finished our visit that we realized that we
could have used our student identification cards to pay only 10 dollars each. However, we did not feel
bad about it because we agreed that our visit was totally worth the price; if not, what we paid for the
entrance was very little.
Brief exploration of the Museum s galleries:
I was taking notes about my visit while exploring the content of the museum. The Asian Art Museum

Roads of Arabia section is divided into four galleries. Each gallery contains objects that present a
theme. For example, the first gallery, which takes place in the Ocher gallery, has the theme of
Prehistoric Arabia. The gallery contains archeological objects and tools that date back to a million
years ago. Some archeological discoveries such as tools and stones show the presence of prehistoric
human settlements in today s Saudi Arabia. The theme of the second gallery is Incense Roads, as it is

Religious Opinions and Views on Abortion Essay
Religious Opinions and Views on Abortion
In examining religious opinions on abortion, one must find common ground on which to form a
foundation of comparison. With most of the religions to date, that common ground lies on the
argument of whether or not a fetus is an actual person. Some religions protest by saying a fetus isn t a
conscious being therefore there is no loss in doing away with it. But for those religions that do believe
there is a life or any spiritual being in a fetus, it is clearly a crime to have an abortion.
Through research an overall conclusion can be provided that most earlier religions, that is those before
1400 A.D., relied on the opinion of the doctor to determine whether abortion was right or ... Show

So from this we can safely say that Catholics view, and have always viewed, abortion as evil. Then
again, we are relying on something uncertain how you determine the humanity of a being. Clearly
Catholics do not view a fetus as a human being.
This being known, it doesn t make sense that a Catholic church should practice fetal baptisms, which
were practiced primarily in the 1700s. They were obviously practiced by churches with views much
less forward than McCarthy s. This is simply one instance where a religion contradicts itself:
McCarthy, an acclaimed Catholic theorist, claims that a fetus is not a human being. Yet fetal baptisms
are performed on miscarriages (Dombrowski 93). Miscarriages thought not fully developed, are
apparently human enough to undergo baptism and be saved by Jesus Christ.
Once again it is necessary to state that most of the religious opinions are based on when human life
begins. In the case of Hinduism, there is no acceptance of abortion. According to the Vedas, abortion
is a sinful activity. There is no question of when a fetus becomes a person. Or even when morality is
reached (when a baby is actually born). Abortion in Hinduism is evil in all cases,

My Trip To The Great Smoky Mountains
It was the middle of the day, but the sky was a darker blue than usual and there were a few stars out. It
was a bit chilly despite being a clear day in August. The mountains I saw ahead were too dark to be
distinguishable from one another. For that brief minute, the sun had disappeared. Seeing the total solar
eclipse was the best experience of my summer and one of the best experiences of my life. My family
and I went to go see it in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. I had been really
excited for this moment because of how long I d been anticipating it. Plus I d been to the Great Smoky
Mountains before and I really enjoyed being there, so I was looking forward to going back.
A great aspect about this day was that I was on Clingman s Dome, the highest mountain in the park,
and it was one of the best places to see the eclipse because there was a beautiful view of the park from
up there and the eclipse was not blocked out by clouds, unlike other places along the path of totality.
My family purchased tickets ahead of time to get up there because it was going to be closed off on the
day of the eclipse to prevent it from being too crowded. We arrived at the parking lot early where they
were loading up the coach buses to go up the mountain and we made it on the first bus and there we
received our solar glasses. The glasses felt like cheap paper glasses, but they had a solar filter in them
that allowed me to look at the sun without hurting my eyes. We were lucky to have these glasses
because when the eclipse was coming near, solar glasses were in very high demand and a lot of people
had trouble getting them.
The ride up to the mountain took about twenty minutes and it was kind of scary because of how high
we were, but I saw some amazing scenery of the Smokies while going up so it wasn t too bad. Once
the bus reached the top of the mountain, I saw the landscape of mountains stretched out ahead as far as
the eye could see. While up on the mountain, people working for NASA had activities going on and
were even handing out solar glasses. Everyone in my family grabbed some NASA solar glasses
because they might be more reliable than the glasses we were given previously and they would make a
neat souvenir.

Atheism Is Not An Easy Belief
Atheism is just as misunderstood as theism in today s realm, specifically when one is precarious of the
other. Theists have some misunderstandings about atheism, but atheists have their specific
misconceptions about theism. These two world understandings are two risky points of view regarding
thoughts of God. Atheists do not trust that God exists, but theists believe in a God, who made the
world and earth. In his article, On Being an Atheist , H.J. McCloskey tries to convince his listeners
that Christianity is not an easy belief. He honors the three opinions that theists use to protect their
belief as evidences. The three opinions are the cosmological argument, the teleological argument and

No matter if an individual is a theist or atheist, he or she has at some time asked why God would
permit or generate evil. The reply is as intricate as responding to the question of reality. If McCloskey
anticipates getting proof of why God permits evil of any kind, there is little proof that is obtainable.
There are just some objects that cannot be solved until one perishes and witnesses life after death.
There is just no complete way to exactly prove whether there is life after death and definitively
whether God exists. H.J. McCloskey attempts to answer the following questions. Is the existence of
God rational? Do the so called opinions for the reality of God have any truth value? Can an atheist live
a more content and ultimately calmer life? McCloskey allegations say that atheism, not theism is a
better interpretation for the world we observe. In this paper I will try to challenge some of the interests
that McCloskey makes about the proofs of God, specifically the Cosmological and Teleological
Arguments. I will then focus on his concerns to an morally impeccable God who allows sin and evil to
happen in an earth that he made. Lastly I will try to describe McCloskey s allegations that life, as an

In 1966, many Alaska Natives protested due to the ANWR being threatened by dirty oil and gas

Jackson s Theory Of The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906
The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 devastated citizens from San Francisco. After the disaster, new
technology advanced when detecting earthquakes. Different theories grew from the elastic rebound
theory to the theory that the soil determines the severity of the earthquake. Building developed new
plans to keep buildings from being destroyed by fires. Harry Fielding Reid, a geologist, discovered a
time difference between the preliminary tremors and the regular waves. Reid concluded that the first
set of tremors would have a lower amplitude than the second set of tremors. Time became an essential
part in determining the severity of the earthquake, so more precise instruments of measurement were
needed to help determine earthquakes.
Using this new information, Reid theorized that earthquakes are triggered by a fault slipping. Reid
referred to this process as a elastic rebound . Reid s theory observed that the eastern side of the fault
moved towards the southern region and away from the northern region. When observing the western
side, the results were the opposite. Reid continued his research on this theory by conducting
experiments using deformed jelly with a fault line.
With this information, scientists gained new information about the San Andreas Fault. The San
Andreas fault followed the border of California. The 1906 earthquake rupture started in Shelter Cove
and continued until Grizzly Flat, and the fault line ran through all of these cities. The information

of Somme, led to his diagnoses of shell shock and order to return to Britain. While Owen underwent
treatment at Craig Lockhart War Hospital, he met one of his literary heroes Siegfried Sassoon.
Sassoon provided Owen with encouragement he needed to write about experiences he had throughout
the war. However, it was not until the summer of 1917 that he found his true voice. Owen is widely
recognized as one of the greatest voices of WWI. The Wilfred Owen Association was formed in 1989
to commemorate Wilfred Owen s life and work. The poems for which Owen is remembered for were
written in a period between August 1917 and September 1918. Owen self appointed himself with the
task of speaking out for the men in his care. He did this by showing the pettiness of war, which Owen
also expressed his distaste for the war in his letters home. Owen s somber practically, energy and

2016 Lectures On Human Evolution
CARTAApril 29, 2016 lectures on human evolution
The CARTA lectures on human evolution included lectures from Joshua Akey from the University of
Washington, Kay Prüfer from the Mark Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, and Tony
Capra from Vanderbilt University. Each of the speakers talked in some detail about the interbreeding
of Neandertals, Denisovans, and modern humans. However, each speaker talked about a different
aspect of the breeding. Akey spoke about Neandertal and Denisovan DNA in modern humans and
their effects. Prüfer discussed the interbreeding of Neandertals and Denisovans and how it affects the
relationship of Neanderthals and Denisovans to modern humans. Lastly, Capra spoke on the
phenotypic effects of Neandertal DNA in modern humans.
Akey opened his lecture with a question: how widespread were ancient introgression events? He
sought to answer how long ago did archaic humans and modern humans interbred and how many
times did they interbreed. Akey mentioned that for a while there was a debate whether hybridization
even occurred between archaic humans and modern humans. This was an ongoing debate until fairly
recently when there was data that was obtained through sequencing the Neandertal and Denisovan
genomes that supported that archaic humans did indeed mate with other modern humans. He
mentioned that a problem with sequencing is that it can be hard to find a suitable specimen that has
been well preserved.
Akey and his student wanted to excavate

Lymphedema is the swelling of soft tissues as a result of the accumulation of protein rich fluid in the
extracellular spaces. Secondary lymphedema is precipitated by an event causing blockage or
interruption of the lymphatic vessels. It is a potential complication that may affect quality of life of
patients treated for breast cancer. Life long risk factors of post breast cancer lymphedema are related
to the extent of axillary node involvement, type of breast surgery, and radiation therapy, as these
factors decrease lymphatic drainage and increase stasis of fluid in the areas of skin and subcutaneous
tissues that drain to those regional lymph nodes. Breast cancer related lymphedema (BCRL) can

In addition to invasive breast cancer, 60,290 new cases of in situ breast cancer weare expected to
occur among women in 2015. Moreover, an estimated 40,290730 breast cancer deaths weare expected
in 2015 [2]. However, as a result of advances in early detection and treatment, compared to today
breast cancer patients can expect survival that is similar to age matched women without the disease,
[3]. Tthe 5 year relative survival for women diagnosed with localized breast cancer has increased from
80% in the 1950s to 899% today [2].
Although breast cancer treatments, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hormonal
therapy, have improved patients outcomes, they cause patients to potentially suffer from substantial
adverse effects [34]. One complication of these treatments is lymphedema, a chronic health problem,
troublesome to both patients and health professionals [5]. Lymphedema describes a set of pathological
conditions in which there is an accumulation of protein rich fluid in soft tissues as a result of the
interruption of lymphatic flow [46, 7]. It is most commonly found in the extremities; however, it also
can be found in the head, neck, abdomen, lungs, and genital regions [58]. Although the incidence of
breast cancer related lymphedema is unclear due to differences in diagnoses, the different
characteristics of the patients studied, and

Observation In A Classroom
I observed that Saint Cloud High School s facilities were flawless, and the green areas were well kept,
it has modern and innovative technology that provide students with permanent opportunities for skill
preparation. I also detected that the security is, for instance, well intentioned to keep the students safe.
Surveillance cameras are installed throughout the building and the surrounding areas of the school.
The Mrs. Sanabria classroom was very organized and safe too. She used technology and classroom
physical resources cleverly because the way she fixed the classroom chairs that seemed appropriate
for her planned learning activities. One of the main advantages I noticed of having such chairs setting
is that she was able to address more often all her students. Consequently, the amount of interaction
between her and the learners was evenly distributed. From my point of view, the instructional setting
of this class was warm, open and tolerant. The overall setting of the classroom was pleasant and
productive. There were a good rapport and friendly balance between instructor and learners
interchange. Students participation was dynamic and enthusiastic. The pupils also seemed well
ordered, so the classroom rules must have been well founded. No discrimination or unfairness
prevailed at all. The students seemed to get along and respect one another. Mrs. Sanabria attitude

Philosophy Is Not An Impossibility
Nowadays, philosophy is seen as a simple art where people instantly question everything. People who
practice this discipline are perceived as crazy and are not understood by the society. Noticing that this
science sub exist since the former time, it has to have a value as other science that we maybe we did
not perceive as first sight. Fortunately, Russell, one of the people who practice this science, enlightens
us on the purpose of the philosophy. By extrapolating the philosophy, the comprehension of this
science could be grasp by its origin, then its significance and finally its place in the world.
Indeed, the philosophy is not an effortless subject to grasp. It could be misunderstood by those
unfamiliar to the topic. It is apodictic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A love could be more important that the one who love depending to the degree we put in it. However,
love mostly has a connotation which leads toward an entirely; this wholly that we can either pursue or
be with. But a question to our momentum could be who that wisdom that we could love be.
Wisdom might be defined as a knowledge that we use as discernment to know what could be good or
bad. A wisdom which come from the adjective wise is also having some experience in one particular
subject. We could notice in this simple word wisdom disclose intrinsically a lexical field of knowledge
inside or outside its being which is abstract.
In addition, love an intangible which is wisdom could not reveal from the physic, the material. This
discipline can only target what we can not see which has a relation with the mind. Thus, love of the
wisdom commonly known as philosophy which display two abstract notions, one is a strong feeling
which push us to significantly bewitch what we love with great interest, the other as a judgment or
experience derivative of the knowledge which appeared not strong but discreet and sober. This
paradox is what philosophy is: a chase of wisdom, a passion concerning the study of knowledge, a
sane thirst of apprenticeship concerning the different experience of life. Knowing its origin could not
be necessarily mean grasp what philosophy is.

Pere s Theory Of Te Wheke
In this essay I will be talking about Dr Rangimarie Turuki Rose Pere and how her theory Te Wheke
has influenced education in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Pere is a Tohuna Tipuna which means the sower
of the sacred seeds of knowledge and keeper of secrets. She wrote her theory based on the knowledge
she gained 12,000 years ago in Hawaiiki. Pere is an International educationalist who has a lot of
knowledge about education from preschool to tertiary level study. Rose s monograph is used by
government agencies in New Zealand as a training model. Dr Pere, wrote a book Te Wheke: A
celebration of infinite wisdom and is being used overseas. Pere also contributed to the Te Whariki:
National Early Childhood Curriculum guidelines New Zealand.
Pere s theory of Te Wheke has eight dimensions; Wairua, Taha Tinana, Ha Taonga Tukuiho (breath,

Economic Globalization And Chinese Poverty
Economic globalization has been a crucial role and a very commonly discussed issue in today s world.
As explained in the book International Business , the term economic globalization means increasing
economic interdependence of national, regional and local economies across the world through
acceleration of cross border movements of goods, services, technology, and capital (Joshi). Many
people s first impression of economic globalization would be the significant economic growth and
higher living standards it creates, especially in East Asian developing countries. Recently, a heated
conversation about economic globalization centers around its effectiveness in reducing worldwide
poverty. Economic globalization has shown an unprecedented ... Show more content on

Therefore, economies that joined globalization grow significantly faster and steadier, and the growth,
in turn, will prompt developments in poverty reduction.
Economic growth is the most powerful instrument for reducing poverty and improving the quality of
life in developing countries by creating jobs, transforming society and driving human development. As
trade goes on, economic globalization introduces new companies to another and increases
employment across the globe. When people have a job, they have a relatively stable income, and thus
become better off than before. One key of UN Millennium Goals is to halve the proportion of people
living under the international poverty line of $1.25 per day by 2015 from its 1990 level. Thanks to the
amazing speed of economic globalization, this prime target of the Millennium Development Goals
was achieved around 2008, seven years earlier than planned (Chandy and Gertz). It is more surprising
that only the six years from 2005 to 2011 would likely reduce half a million of people in poverty while
the same feat had taken 25 years up to 2005. Needless to say, the speed continues to increase.
Economic globalization is never simply a notion suggesting theoretical benefits in textbook, but has
been making great actual progress in the recent decades.
China has been the biggest winner in this reallocation of resources and

Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë is an English classic that tells the tale of star crossed lovers.
Despite the love for one another, society separates the two lovers and a rivalry between their two
homes begins. Throughout the novel, the characteristics of the occupants of the two homes,
Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights, are noticeably different. Following the death of Catherine
Linton, the traits of those living in both homes are integrated.
Ever since the Earnshaw family had taken in Heathcliff, his adoptive brother, Hindley, has treated him
like a servant. Hindley s sister, Catherine, however formed an inseparable bond with Heathcliff.
Despite their love for each other, Catherine marries Edgar, a young man of social grace, which
attracted Catherine. Feeling wronged Heathcliff vows revenge on Hindley for trying to keep him from
Catherine and treating him as a servant, and Edgar who stole the woman he loved and for not
accepting him socially.

  • 2. Walter Ruttman A secondary important figure in defining and examining the absolute film movement within Germany during the 1920s is Walter Ruttman. Unlike Richter he began as a student of architecture and graphic design, which shaped his identity as an experimental filmmaker and accounts for the prominence of shapes and lines within his films. He began his career as filmmaker directly after his release from a hospital in Berlin for treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder caused by his experiences in WW1. His works are said to be the very first examples of completely abstract film, meaning that they are composed solely of the arrangement of various forms (geometric and arbitrary) with no outside reference to anything or to any particular meaning. His first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his first two Opus shorts he used the paint on glass technique employing oil paints in different streaks, curves, blobs and lines of various colors. Unlike Richter s Rhythm 21, Opus I and II incorporate different colored shapes as well as tints and tones over the lens of the camera which have been said to evoke a certain mood within the rhythmic movements. What we see is basically a dance of both these soft arbitrary forms moving around the frame as well as (towards the end of I and moreso in II) other hard edged triangular shapes that are not quite as organic. Moving through his four films within the series we can see both a refinement of his technique in addition to new approaches that seem to have been influenced by Constructivist perspectives. In Opus II he uses a technique known as kinestasis, which uses movement of the camera to make still figures appear to have motion. By Opus IV all color has been removed, shapes have lost their organic quality and are only geometric (as they are in Richter s works) and there is much less evocation of feeling. Instead he shows only the essential capacity of the camera as a device and uses only light, framing and time as his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

PECS can also be initiated by the test subject, as Frost and Bondy (2002) recommend that training can continue as long as a student is initiating the interaction. Observation of behavior will be for the entire 6 hour day to measure the effects of the treatment. A parental survey will be given at the onset of treatment and at the end of the 6th week. Materials PECS icons and a PECS book have been obtained as well as a laminator and this researcher will select 5 icons measuring 2 x 2 with a Velcro adhesive on the back. The icons have been predetermined via reviewing previous session notes to determine what factors seem to be most linked to maladaptive behaviors. A tantrum ends after 30 seconds of appropriate behavior (e.g., sitting quietly, watching television, playing with toy, etc.). Communication Defined as vocal behavior which may be echoic or intelligible which is in response to a stimulus. Vocal approximations to words will also be counted as a vocal attempt such as pees for please . Independent Variable The independent variable for this study will be the PECS exchange, which has been modified from two trainers to one. The researcher will play the part of both communicative partner and physical prompter, if necessary. The exchange will consist of the subject picking up the 2x2 icon, reaching towards the researcher and placing the icon in the researcher s hand. This will constitute one instance of PECS regardless of whether it is initiated by the student or the researcher. During the treatment phase CG s mother will be reminded daily to make her duplicate icons available to him at all times. Diagnosis Of The Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease THE HAEMATOLOGICAL PATTERN OF THE PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE IN A TERTIARY CARE SETUP IN SOUTH INDIA Dr.S.Palaniandavan** Dr.M.V.Bhargavi*** *Professor and head of the department **Assistant professor General medicine department Sree Balaji medical college and hospital, Chromepet, Chennai. ABSTRACT Background: With the incidence and the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) increasing worldwide and its economic repercussions, a detailed haematological workup of such patients is necessary to detect the type of anaemia, as there is a general tendency to consider anaemia to be of the normocytic normochromic type. However in India, a co existing iron deficiency is also common. Anaemia is an independent risk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Materials and Methods: This observational study included 100 patients of chronic kidney disease, who were included, irrespective of their age, sex, aetiology and their clinical profiles. A thorough clinical examination and evaluation were conducted, which included serum iron studies. By using Chi square analysis, the parameters which were used for a statistical correlation were the levels of anaemia with respect to the stages of the kidney disease, the type and the severity of anaemia, thrombocytopaenia with the bleeding time, leucocytosis and elevated ESR values. Results: Although most of the anaemia was of the normocytic type, nearly a third of the patients had microcytic hypochromic and a mixed type of anaemia. Those with a microcytic hypochromic picture correlated with a severe degree of anaemia. The elevated Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) levels were more distributed in the lower levels of the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR). There was no association between the platelet levels and the bleeding time. The leucocytosis was not necessarily associated with infections. Conclusions: It is pertinent to detect and treat subclinical iron deficiency in patients with CKD and to not over investigate the minor haematological variations. INTRODUCTION Chronic renal failure or chronic kidney disease is defined as Kidney damage Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) 60 ml/min/1.73 sq.m For a period of 3 months (As per the National Kidney ... • 5. Backround Of The Study On Victims Of Stalking Chapter One: Introduction Backround of the Study Stalking, according to The National Institute of Justice, October, 2007, is defined as a crime of power and control, is conservatively defined as a course of conduct directed to a specific person that involves repeated (two or more occasions) visual or physical proximity, non consensual communication or verbal, written, or implied threats, or a combination thereof that would cause a reasonable person fear . Stalking behaviors may also include persistence patterns of leaving or sending the victim unwanted items or presents that may range from seemingly romantic to bizarre, following or laying in wait or the victim, damaging or threatening to damage the victims property, defaming the victim character, or harassing the victim via the internet by posting by posting personal information or spreading rumors about the victim. Stalking can be carried out by two methods in person and electronic mechanisms (phone, fax, GPS, cameras, computer spyware and the internet/social media). According to a National Institute of Justice violence survey in 2007, 1 in 6 women and 1 in 19 men nationwide have been stalked during their lifetime. For both females and males victims, stalking was often committed by people they knew or with whom they had a relationship. • 6. Naval Academy Observation Report Life at the Academy especially the first year is tough. There are days the midshipmen will love it and other days when they hate it. Eventually I understand that the loves out weigh the hates, however, in the beginning, during plebe year, it may feel overwhelming to many of them. As a lot of Naval Academy graduates say about the Naval Academy, It s a good place to be from, but not a good place to be. Concerning that, there were some regulations that I only discovered with further observation. For example, at all formal meals, plebes only use the front three or four inches of their chairs, sitting at attention, with the exception of chair in the academic buildings and plebe/Fourth Class dorms. Also when walking down corridors they can only use the center alley and chop (quick step with high knees) with eyes in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also when eating at King Hall, they must not speak unless addressed by an upperclassman. If a plebe needs to speak, he must first extend a fist (known as putting out the paw ) for permission to speak. Alas, for the plebes, those are only the rules which apply in King Hall. There are also many other rules they struggle with on the entire academy. Directly before a formal meal, during their formation outside of Bancroft, the midshipmen must recite the menu, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. When plebes are asked, How long have you been in the Navy, they must answer, All me blooming life, sir! Me mother was a mermaid, me father was King Neptune. When plebes are asked, How s the cow, they must answer, Sir, she walks, she talks, she s full of chalk. Although these myriad of disjointed memorizations, ludicrous tasks and perpetual Panic mode as a plebe may seem to have very little to do with the profession of arms, the sole purpose of the regulations is to make them into better officers as a whole. In the real world, these traditions encourage the quick execution of orders, discipline, knowledge of your environment, and respect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Historians have no precise method of quantifying or comparing their individual accomplishments (Olsen). Not only in mathematics, but also in many other career areas in the past, women were looked upon as inferior to their male counterparts. Women were not encouraged to pursue a career in mathematics. Historically, women were seen working around the home, cleaning the house, taking care of the children, and cooking the food. Even if they did pursue a career in mathematics, their research was sometimes viewed as questionable. Prosecuting Attorneys The Dynamics of Prosecuting Attorneys Prosecuting attorneys have been enforcing law and order for many years, trying criminal cases while representing local, state, or federal governments. They interview witnesses and victims, look at police reports, and do legal research to plan prosecutions for cases. After the information is collected, it is used in court to present a case against the defendant. Most of the time cases are begun by reviewing police reports and conducting research. Passing the bar exam is the only way to get a license to practice. ( Prosecuting ). Potential prosecutors should focus on criminal law while earning their degree. Criminal law is a system of law that is devoted to the punishment of people who commit crimes. In general, Criminal law asks and answers three questions: 1. Did an individual commit a crime? 2. Which crime did an individual commit? 3. Does the individual have a defense? The way each state prosecutes criminals is different because each state has its own criminal code. Which means each state decides what punishment is appropriate for each crime. Criminal codes vary greatly among state and federal government. Some statues resemble the common law criminal code, but others, like the New York Penal Law, almost mimic the Model Penal Code (MPC). Common law is when law is taken from judicial decisions instead of from written law. • 13. The Encoding of Contextual Fear Conditioning The formation of new memories requires protein synthesis dependent changes in synaptic structure and plasticity in the hippocampus. Studies in humans and animals suggest that these memories are initially stored in hippocampus but later transferred to cortex for permanent storage. This phenomenon is described as systems consolidation of memories. While the specific role for new protein synthesis in hippocampus in early encoding of memories is established, whether protein synthesis in medial prefrontal cortex play a major role in encoding of memories is unclear. To address this question, we used contextual fear conditioning (CFC) of mouse, a behavior training that induce long lasting memories. A single training session produces robust lifelong memory (8) that can be measured using automated procedures (9). Several studies have used CFC training as a model to study hippocampal cortical communications and mechanisms underlying systems consolidation of memories. Contextual fear memories are initially stored in hippocampus and then moved to medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) for long term storage. We assume that if encoding of contextual fear memories require protein synthesis at both hippocampus and PFC, we will be able to identify translationally active mRNAs in hippocampus and PFC. Because RNAs associated with polyribosomes indicate translational activation, we first isolated polyribosomes from mPFC and hippocampus at two time points (one hour and six hours, hereafter T1 and T2 ... ZIKV was first isolated in 1947 from the serum of rhesus monkeys located in the Zika Forest of Uganda. These monkeys were displaying signs of fever and served as a sentinel animal for the surveillance of Yellow Fever Virus (YFV). Approximately nine months later, ZIKV was isolated in the same region from the Aedes africanus mosquito species (Seitz, 2016). ZIKV preferentially infects and injures neural progenitor cells (Tang et al., 2016). A study in Rio de Janeiro tracked 88 pregnant women who reported potential symptoms of ZIKV infection (Brasil et al., 2016). A Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test confirmed a ZIKV infection in 72 of these women who were between 5 and 38 weeks of gestation. Fetal ultrasonography was performed in 42 ZIKV positive and 12 ZIK V negative pregnant women. In 12 of the 42 ZIKV positive and none of the 16 ZIK V negative pregnant women, fetal abnormalities including central nervous system defects were observed. With most of the religions to date, that common ground lies on the argument of whether or not a fetus is an actual person. Some religions protest by saying a fetus isn t a conscious being therefore there is no loss in doing away with it. But for those religions that do believe there is a life or any spiritual being in a fetus, it is clearly a crime to have an abortion. We arrived at the parking lot early where they were loading up the coach buses to go up the mountain and we made it on the first bus and there we received our solar glasses. The glasses felt like cheap paper glasses, but they had a solar filter in them that allowed me to look at the sun without hurting my eyes. We were lucky to have these glasses because when the eclipse was coming near, solar glasses were in very high demand and a lot of people had trouble getting them. The ride up to the mountain took about twenty minutes and it was kind of scary because of how high we were, but I saw some amazing scenery of the Smokies while going up so it wasn t too bad. Once the bus reached the top of the mountain, I saw the landscape of mountains stretched out ahead as far as the eye could see. While up on the mountain, people working for NASA had activities going on and were even handing out solar glasses. Everyone in my family grabbed some NASA solar glasses because they might be more reliable than the glasses we were given previously and they would make a neat souvenir. ... • 36. Atheism Is Not An Easy Belief Atheism is just as misunderstood as theism in today s realm, specifically when one is precarious of the other. Theists have some misunderstandings about atheism, but atheists have their specific misconceptions about theism. These two world understandings are two risky points of view regarding thoughts of God. Atheists do not trust that God exists, but theists believe in a God, who made the world and earth. In his article, On Being an Atheist , H.J. McCloskey tries to convince his listeners that Christianity is not an easy belief. He honors the three opinions that theists use to protect their belief as evidences. The three opinions are the cosmological argument, the teleological argument and the problem of evil. Even though these opinions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No matter if an individual is a theist or atheist, he or she has at some time asked why God would permit or generate evil. The reply is as intricate as responding to the question of reality. If McCloskey anticipates getting proof of why God permits evil of any kind, there is little proof that is obtainable. There are just some objects that cannot be solved until one perishes and witnesses life after death. There is just no complete way to exactly prove whether there is life after death and definitively whether God exists. H.J. McCloskey attempts to answer the following questions. Is the existence of God rational? Do the so called opinions for the reality of God have any truth value? Can an atheist live a more content and ultimately calmer life? McCloskey allegations say that atheism, not theism is a better interpretation for the world we observe. In this paper I will try to challenge some of the interests that McCloskey makes about the proofs of God, specifically the Cosmological and Teleological Arguments. I will then focus on his concerns to an morally impeccable God who allows sin and evil to happen in an earth that he made. Lastly I will try to describe McCloskey s allegations that life, as an atheist, is more relaxing than a life based on the acceptance of a supreme existence. For a better description, this refuge has been named spiritual, recreational, historical, and cultural. However, not all would agree that the arctic refuge is a rather safe place. In 1966, many Alaska Natives protested due to the ANWR being threatened by dirty oil and gas development. Since then, many laws and acts have been passed and signed so that the ANWR would be kept safe. For example, in 1960 President Eisenhower established the Arctic National Wildlife Range to preserve wilderness, wildlife, and recreation. • 38. Jackson s Theory Of The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906 The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 devastated citizens from San Francisco. After the disaster, new technology advanced when detecting earthquakes. Different theories grew from the elastic rebound theory to the theory that the soil determines the severity of the earthquake. Building developed new plans to keep buildings from being destroyed by fires. Harry Fielding Reid, a geologist, discovered a time difference between the preliminary tremors and the regular waves. Reid concluded that the first set of tremors would have a lower amplitude than the second set of tremors. Time became an essential part in determining the severity of the earthquake, so more precise instruments of measurement were needed to help determine earthquakes. Using this new information, Reid theorized that earthquakes are triggered by a fault slipping. Reid referred to this process as a elastic rebound . Reid s theory observed that the eastern side of the fault moved towards the southern region and away from the northern region. When observing the western side, the results were the opposite. Reid continued his research on this theory by conducting experiments using deformed jelly with a fault line. With this information, scientists gained new information about the San Andreas Fault. The San Andreas fault followed the border of California. The 1906 earthquake rupture started in Shelter Cove and continued until Grizzly Flat, and the fault line ran through all of these cities. Each of the speakers talked in some detail about the interbreeding of Neandertals, Denisovans, and modern humans. However, each speaker talked about a different aspect of the breeding. Akey spoke about Neandertal and Denisovan DNA in modern humans and their effects. Prüfer discussed the interbreeding of Neandertals and Denisovans and how it affects the relationship of Neanderthals and Denisovans to modern humans. Lastly, Capra spoke on the phenotypic effects of Neandertal DNA in modern humans. Akey opened his lecture with a question: how widespread were ancient introgression events? He sought to answer how long ago did archaic humans and modern humans interbred and how many times did they interbreed. Akey mentioned that for a while there was a debate whether hybridization even occurred between archaic humans and modern humans. This was an ongoing debate until fairly recently when there was data that was obtained through sequencing the Neandertal and Denisovan genomes that supported that archaic humans did indeed mate with other modern humans. He mentioned that a problem with sequencing is that it can be hard to find a suitable specimen that has been well preserved. Akey and his student wanted to excavate ...
