Darwin And The Scientific Method
Summary Darwin and the Scientific Method There has been an apparent disagreement between how
Darwin conducted his experimentation and how he publicized his findings to the public. Ayala
describes that Darwin follows and inductive approach derived from British philosophers such as John
Stuart Mill and Francis Bacon; they believed in making observations without criticizing as to their
significance and to gather several of them in order to reach a final conclusion. As Darwin traveled on
the H.M.S. Beagle he was in pursuit of knowledge that required observation and experimentation,
otherwise known as empirical evidence. In this case, he wanted to explain the origin of organisms and
to see if his theory of natural selection is true. Darwin had the fear of being accused in making
evaluations based on poorly measured results. There was this urge in formulating hypotheses that can
be tested by observable experimentation rather than having ones that appear to be afterthoughts. It has
been a false mindset that science advances by gathering experimental results and drawing a
conclusion. Bacon and Mill suggested inductive reasoning as a way to gain empirical conclusions not
based on personal feelings or opinions. Basically, an ideal scientist should observe any occurrence and
record without worrying as to what the truth may be. However, every scientist must have a plan as to
what kind event to study and obtain answers to questions they may have on something that interests
them. A

Double Standards In Victorian Society
In both novels the double standards in society are notable, as women always take the blame and were
punished for the same actions that men partook in regularly. Both authors cleverly expose the
hypocrisy and double standards in society through the portrayal of their female protagonists.
In Hardy s novel, the double standards of society greatly affect Tess s life experience. Tess was
expected to work, marry, and support her family as she was the eldest daughter. When she was a
young virgin girl, she is seen as desirable by men and society. Consequently, after her relations with
Alec D Urberville, she is considered a fallen woman and immoral by Victorian society. Women in
Victorian England were expected to be chasted, wholesome and most ... Show more content on

Beneath the gun were several magazines with curling corners. Mariam opened one. Something inside

wore no shirts, no trousers, no socks, or underpants. They wore nothing at all. They lay in beds amid
tumbled sheets and gazed back at Mariam with half lidded eyes. In most of the pictures, their legs
apart, and Mariam had a full view of the dark place between. The sequence of questions which follow,
shows the double standard of Rasheed s demands for Mariam and reveals him to be a hypocrite, Who
were these women? How could they allow themselves to be photographed this way? ... And what
about all his talk of honour and propriety, his disapproval of the female customers, who, after all, were

some of them must. At least, they had brothers. If so, why did Rasheed insist that she cover when he

Jack Rapke
Yesterday, I was granted the opportunity, as a New York Film, Academy alumni , to attend a Q A given
by producer, Jack Rapke, preceded by a screening of his newest film, The Walk which is based on a
true story. The movie stars Joseph Gordon Levitt (whom Rapke called Joe ) who plays French
tightrope walker Phillippe Petit who in 1974, strung a rope connecting the buildings of the world trade
center then tightrope walked across it. The movie, directed by Robert Zemeckis (who Rapke called
Bob ), starred Joseph Gordon Levitt, who, much to my surprise, did all of his own stunts and speaks
fluent French. His acting performance paired with the fact that he had to switch off speaking French
and speaking English with a French accent while also balancing tediously on a tightrope was nothing
short of astounding. Even with an all star cast and crew, the movie flopped at the box office.
After the movie and before the Q A, they set up the lights and the cameras, but not just for the guest
speaker. I heard someone yell striking , not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every single student that asked a question was from a different country with a different dialect. I could
have remembered this from when I did the NYFA summer program. They love having that diversity
and I loved hearing people here and there talk in other languages to one another.
It was wonderful to listen to such an experienced person in the industry share his insights on the
business. One of the more unusual truths I learned was that talent agents for actors are petrified of
their clients. No one wants to break the tough news to one another and agents are no exception. This
came as a surprise to because, as an actor, we want desperately to be taken in by an agent, that we fear
them and what they will think of us. To realize that they re afraid of their actors too is mind boggling.

Montresor Kills Fortunato
Does wine lead you to your own death or is there another accomplice? Edgar Allen Poe wrote a short
story named Cask of Amontillado. The protagonist Montresor plots about killing his enemy Fortunato.
He takes him to his families vault and builds a wall around him. Montresor lures Fortunato with wine
to get the revenge he so well deserved. Montresor accomplishes his quest to kill Fortunato because of
his brilliant mind, vengeful nature, and his guilt. Montresor was very organized and knew how to trick

Last Flight by Amelia Earhart
February 9, 2017
For so much of our history as a people, we are often reminded of the many successful men that
accomplished things to make this world a better place. We are reminded about their long, devastating
journey to reach their goals and maintain their prosperity; however, not once do we hear of their wives
or female siblings. In the early 1900 s it was still presumed that this was the role of the man. A woman
from Kansas, however, rose beyond the clouds of prejudice her name Amelia Earhart. Determined and
hard working, this woman set on surpassing the limits previously placed on women, and in her book,
Last Flight, Amelia Earhart fought the many odds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On April 8, 1931, she set the altitude record by flying 18,415 feet. On January 11, 1935, she became
the first person to fly across the Pacific from Honolulu to Oakland (Earhart 89 93). All this was done
during a time and place where people lossed their jobs, and the economy was bad. Unemployment rate
almost tripled between 1930 and 1933 as it jumped from 8.9 percent to 24.9 percent. Americans relied
on Earhart s successes as national achievements and viewed them as encouragement through all of the
unrest of the great depression. It was a signal that while America s economy was still weakening, the
country s spirit to accomplish was still strong. It was also a symbol that the American dream was still
active and that, at least in some way, those who worked hard would be compensated. Her
accomplishments proved to the world that women were equal, and lifted America to the center stage of
civil rights.
In conclusion, the book Last Flight, by Amelia Earhart, portrayed a critical moment in American
History; traditional viewpoints were challenged, aviation became ingrained in the American culture,
and women became major players in the American Dream. Amelia Earhart s accomplishments have
jarring similarities to Valentina Tereshkova the first woman in space, orbiting the earth forty eight
times. She put the previous four American astronauts all male to shame with their combined total of
thirty six. These

Examples Of High-Class Conflict In The Great Gatsby
The cynosures of the 1920s were people in the high class society . They had abundant amounts of
money, as well as bragging rights to do as they please. One of the most prominent themes in The Great
Gatsby is the social class conflicts in the 1920s. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays this through rich versus
poor conflicts, as well as through Old Money versus New Money conflicts. In this novel, rich are
treated significantly different from the poor. The first time the reader really sees this conflict is when
Daisy makes fun of their butler. As if spreading gossip, Daisy bluntly asks, Do you want to hear about
the butler (Fitzgerald pg17)? She then goes on to explain that he can not smell because of his old job,
which was for lower class people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tom is a rich man who lives in East Egg, whereas George is a poor man who lives at a gas station in
the Valley of Ashes. Since the rich only marry rich, and Gatsby was not available at the time, Daisy
Buchanan marries Tom and keeps her title as a rich individual. On the other end of things Myrtle
Wilson, who lives in the Valley of Ashes hates her life at the gas station , and wants more for her life
than a man who only faked his wealth to be with her (Sam January 17, 2013). Because of this mishap,
Myrtle strives to be with the prosperous Tom Buchanan throughout the book, but no man would step
down in class just to be with a woman at the social status that Myrtle is at. As a result of the social
status difference, Myrtle has no right to speak about Daisy because she is so far below her. This issue
becomes present at the end of chapter 3 when Myrtle, out of spite and ignorance, begins to shout
Daisy s name. Tom is the most dominant character throughout the novel, and with one swift upward
motion broke her nose with his open hand (Fitzgerald pg41). Tom believes his actions were acceptable
because Myrtle was speaking out of place. This example shows the extreme actions taken against
someone of a different class, and just how regular it really was to treat them a completely different

Protein And Carbohydrates Essay
Protein and carbohydrates are both macronutrients required for health reasons. But which one of these
macronutrients before a run affects running performance more favorably? Most people recognize
protein as something that helps build stronger muscles. But is that the only thing that protein helps
with? Carbohydrates which are also called sugar is stored as glycogen in the muscles and comes from
healthy (fruit) and unhealthy (candy) places. Researchers were curious to know, what macro nutrient
has a more favorable effect on running, protein or carbohydrate (sugar)? People can improve their
running by improving their diet. Sugar is a carbohydrate. When runners eat sugar the sugar is turned
into glucose in our blood. Then it is stored into the muscles which are called glycogen. Glycogen
gives people the energy to run for a longer amount of time. Sugar is energy. Runners mostly eat
natural sugar like fruits because of the vitamins and minerals and not processed sugar like candy and
junk food which can cause diseases like diabetes. Glycogen can be stored through a runner s liver as

Protein is healthy for people s organs. Runners would rather have a few eggs that are healthy for
humans and give them energy, than having candy or junk food that will potentially hurt the stomach.
The great thing about protein is that not only does it help humans lose weight, but it is a backup for
sugar. What this researcher means is that when runners run out of energy in their muscles, then protein
will give the muscles energy. Protein is used to help the muscles heal faster after running. The runners
will drink a protein shake after their run to help their muscles heal from the soreness from their
marathon or the run they took. Protein also helps runners/people receive stronger or better muscles in
their arms, legs,

`` Everything That Rises Must Converge By O Connor
Many people realize sometime in their lives that generations have very different ways of expressing
themselves. Rudimentary ideas get passed down throughout generations, but the ways in which people
interact change due to the different to social differences. In today s world people go about their day
using smartphones to text and call people. This was something that previous generations were not able
to do, thus creating a change in the ways that people express themselves to others. This idea is exactly
what Flannery O Connor was writing about throughout Everything that Rises Must Converge . O
Connor uses the theme of racism to emphasise the similarities and differences between Julian and his
mother s generations, but how they still are mentally very similar.
Julian and his mother have very similar personalities even though they think that they are the exact
opposite. Julian s mother thinks a lot about the way that people view her. She cares about the
appearance that she gives off so everyone can see how rich or great she is. She shows this off in one
way by the house that she lives in Since this had been a fashionable neighborhood forty years ago, his
mother persisted in thinking they did well to have an apartment in it (O Connor 273). This explains
that even though it was a nice neighborhood many years ago that Julian s mother still wants to live
there. Her mind is stuck in a world that she no longer lives in. Julian has a very similar situation that

The Causes Of The Protestant Reformation
The Protestant Reformation regarded the followers of the Catholic Church finally rebelling and
realizing all of the corruption happening in the Church. The Protestant Reformation took place in the
16th century and led to the revolutionization of Europe. The Reformation sparked the Scientific
Revolution, Industrial Revolution, and the Enlightenment. The Reformation s challenge to Church
authority revolution Europe because people did not accept earlier authorities, questioned earlier
authorities thoughts, and started to think for themselves and said that God was not always the answer.
During the Scientific Revolution, questioning applied to the natural world led to yielding the full
understanding of nature. Copernicus was someone that questioned the natural world; he did not follow
what people said before him without question. Copernicus question mathematicians in 1543 because
he wanted to understand astronomy better. Other ways, questioning the natural world happened when
people started to interrogate nature. Interrogating nature means: observing what is there and ask
questions about it. In 1628, William Harvey wanted to know more about how the heart worked, so to
gain the new knowledge he performed vivisection and observed his findings. Vivisection means
dissection of a living animal. William Harvey found that blood is continuously pumped by the action
of the heart from the vena cava to the arteries and from the arteries to various organs, the pulse drives

Diarrheal is an intestinal disorder in which an individual is induced to frequently release fecal. This
consistent fluid loss leads to dehydration and nutrient loss. If an individual is not able to replace the

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of State Owned...
State owned enterprises are regarded as a particular circumstance of business organisations and
considered as the basis of economic growth in many countries (Zhang, 2011). It can be seen that the
proportion of state owned companies has increased from nine percent in 2005 to 23 percent in 2014
especially in China which has a proportion of 15 percent in 2014 (PwC, 2015). Furthermore, state
owned companies might be a necessary tool for development in emerging countries, because they can
be directed and achieved by governments. Although state owned companies have played an important
role in an economy, they sometimes seem to perform poorly compared with private sectors on average
in many countries, partly because the goals of public policy sometimes are complicated to be achieved
(World Bank Group, 2014). Therefore, many countries have decided to privatise because they have
expected that private sectors would operate and perform better than the government would do. Thus,
privatisation has become an international phenomenon globally particularly in addressing inefficiency
from state enterprises. However, there might have some benefits and drawbacks of privatisations, but
all of the procedures are most likely to depend on the quality of contracts and regulation in each
circumstance. For this reason, this essay will examine: firstly, the agency costs that seem to occur in
state owned companies, secondly a privatisation will be analysed as a result from those costs. Thirdly,

How Does Delillo Present The Fear Of Death In White Noise
The fear of death is one of the most prominent themes in White Noise. Everything in the novel from
Hitler to the toxic airborne event circles back to how human beings are subconsciously afraid of
dying. DeLillo s novel displays how life attempts to push this fear away, almost saying out of sight,
out of mind . Yet, as we see in the characters of Jack and Babette, the fear continues to rear its ugly
head and fill them with terror. DeLillo shows this close relationship between life and death. He could
be trying to show how death lingers dangerously in the background of our lives. The toxic event
changed the way Jack Gladney feared death. Not only did it make his fear worse, but it made him
absolutely terrified of it. During the event, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This could be based on the fact that no matter who you are or what you do, death is inevitable. I
believe that Jack relates to a Hitler like persona because he relates to this idea of life credit . When
Jack is talking to Murray, Murray mentions that to kill another person is to gain life credit. The more
people you kill, the more credit you store up (DeLillo pg. 277). This is similar to Hitler, from my own
knowledge, I already know that Hitler thought the more people he killed the more power he would
gain and the more invincible he would feel. Jack seems to have the same mindset because he thinks
killing a man will give him more time. He is almost trying to cheat death and outlive the chemical
inside of him. I feel like Jack thinks that if he kills someone, he gains whatever years they had left. As
any rational person would know, this is just simply impossible, but Jack seems to believe this illusion
is his ticket to maximizing the time he has left. The common theme between these two passages is that
death is an inescapable process. I found it very interesting that the toxic event happened before Jack
shot Willie Mink. The toxic event only made it more clear to Jack that he is going to die because of his
chemical exposure, however it also hastened his dying process. This is why I find it so strange that
Jack tried to kill Mr. Mink. From my understanding, Jack was under the impression that killing
someone would extend his life, however he knows that he

Black English Essay
Stories have existed since the beginning of mankind. Going back as far as ancient Greece in history, or
even further back, one can examine the many different types of stories that have been passed down.
The Ancient Greeks wrote about gods and developed drama; the Romans passed down biographies of
Caesars containing their life achievements as well as their failures; numerous stories questioning the
institution of slavery were produced here in American. Usually by reading the work of an author one
is able to find a message or a moral hidden beneath the storyline. In most cases, authors dictate their

With this being stated throughout the studies of Black English, one cannot attain that Black English is
flat out racist either.
The use of dialect sets a distinguishing setting throughout a story. Without dialect the reader may be
lost or confused about where the story may be taking place and what initially is going on at the time of
the story. This is an advantage for dialect that helps the reader understand on a non racist level,
especially if the reader is not from the same culture as the writer or story teller. In her story, When
Brer Deer and Brer Terrapin Runned a Race, Emma Backus, says, So he say, Brer Coon did, how Brer
Deer and Brer Terrapin shall run a seven mile race, and the one what get there first shall surely have
the gal , cause he feel that sure in he mind, Brer Coon do, that Brer Deer nat rally bound to outrun old
Brer Terrapin (Lauter, Alberti, and Brady 37). This clearly sets a setting for the story and makes the
reader clearly understand that this story is from long ago and is not in present time. The dialect used
only portrays how the story was told and in no way should it have a racist affect on the reader. When
an author uses dialect, he or she creates an entire world, which directly reflects their very own
experience. Without it, the story becomes less interesting and more boring to a reader. Dialect
generates a more personal outlook on what the author is really trying to state throughout

Many people traditionally send flowers, plants, and fruit baskets. This is thoughtful and shows you
care. On the other hand, when my sister experienced a death in her family last year, she became
overwhelmed with what to do with all of the flowers that came to the house in the first couple of days,
and then a week later the flowers were dead and she felt so lonely. Like I said, when someone dies,
normal things can become very difficult, often in unexpected ways.
So what is the appropriate etiquette for gift giving for sympathy and funeral occasions? You want to

Send yourself. Be present. It is easier to see what the needs are when you yourself are physically
sharing the hard moments with the bereaved.
2. If you can t be there yourself, this is when flowers, cards, plants, and baskets become more
meaningful. Again, remember that flowers die quickly, and the bereaved will have to throw them
away. Potted plants usually work better they require little maintenance, last a long time and symbolize
hope and peace (Peace Lilies for example).
3. Make a donation in the name of the departed. In my sister s case, when her son died, we ended up
making a donation to a nonprofit that collects the playful drawings of school children and delivers
them to the elderly, shut in, and infirm. We did this to try to share the love he brought into the world
with others less fortunate, even though he was gone.
4. Give the family a permanent keepsake something with the departed s initials, a favorite saying of
theirs, a shadowbox of their most precious belongings, or special photos. For Christmas the year after
my nephew died, my aunt gave the family a toy train in which each car of the train was a letter of his
name. This was very meaningful and the kind of thing that lasts

Arguments Against The Exclusionary Rule
In the United States, there have been rules established to protect its citizens. One such rule, the
exclusionary rule was put in place to do just that. A legal rule, which is derived from constitutional
law, this rule protects citizens by preventing evidence to be presented at trial that was obtained while
violating the defendants Fourth Amendment rights. The Fourth Amendment protects citizens against
illegal search and seizure, therefore any evidence that is collected by law enforcement illegal will not
be admissible in court the court of law. The exclusionary rule is frequently used in the American
courts to suppress evidence collected by law enforcement. One such case in 1913, was Weeks vs The
United States. In this case, law enforcement used a key to enter Weeks home after suspected him using
the postal system to transport lottery tickets. Police collected all the needed documents to have Weeks
indicted and found guilty. Filing an appeal, Weeks argued that all articles collected and used as
evidence against him should have been suppressed, due to the fact it was collected in violation of his
4th amendment. Having reached the Supreme Court, it was ruled unanimously that the evidence had
been collected without ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, those who support the rule, argue that having such rule deters members of law enforcement from
illegal search and seizures of citizens. Police know that if evidence is found to have been collected
illegally, and in violation of the defendants 4th amendment right, that evidence will be admissible in
court. This could possibly result in the defendant walking free. Secondly, another supporting argument
is that the exclusionary rule upholds the Fourth Amendment. This rule protects citizens constitutional
right to be protected from illegal search and seizure, and causes law enforcement to operate within the
boundaries of the law when making an

Talent Development Meeting Report
The Professional meeting that I attended was for the Association for Talent Development. The meeting
itself focused on The Future of Talent Development. The opener for the meeting stated that: is
predicted that everything training wise would be moved to a digital platform. AnnaMaria Levich,
Haley McCullian, and Kyle Salembier, also attended this meeting. The Association for Talent
Development group is something that I have heard of in at least two of my AOD classes and if given a
chance to attend a meeting I decided I would go. I was unaware of where the meetings met and who

The concept of training when it comes to adult learning has a very prominent link to how employees
train new hires of the millennial generation. The meeting solidified how important it is for to stay up

how adults learn best for training purposes can help all companies overall. From the day, a person is
officially hired up until the first day of official training occurs; the new hire goes through a getting to

Tetralogy of Fallow is a surgically, treatable disease characterized by all or a combination of at least
four congenital birth defects. It accounts for 10% of all congenital heart defects that modify the
formation of the heart. It also alters the way blood flows through the heart. Tetralogy of Fallow is
usually diagnosed at birth or infancy and with surgery a child can live a relatively normal life. The
prefix tetra means four and the term fallot is named after a French doctor who first discovered the
disease in the 1800 s. Appropriately named after the discovery, Tetralogy of Fallow came about
because of the four heart defects observed. One major complication that manifest from Tetralogy of

This obstruction causes a decrease in oxygen perfusion to the lungs also resulting in cyanosis.
Newborns with severe narrowing are cyanotic. A characteristic murmur is usually always present.
Severe pulmonary stenosis causes heart failure. The third defect is Right Ventricular Hypertrophy,
which causes a thicker than normal right ventricle. Right ventricular hypertrophy occurs because the
heart pumping action becomes harder creating an increase in the hearts work load. Subsequently, this
causes a thicker and more muscular heart muscle. This defect causes also causes a reduction in oxygen
flowing to the body. The left side of the heart may be underdeveloped from increased work load on the
right side of the heart. The fourth and last defect involves an overriding aorta. According to the
American Heart Association, this occurs when the artery that carries oxygenated blood is displaced
and arises above both ventricles. Therefore, oxygen poor blood flows straight into the aorta (Jacobs
9/2012). The major complication with an overriding aorta as it relates to Tetralogy of Fallow is a
deficit in blood flow makes it difficult for oxygenated blood to reach the lungs to gain oxygen for the
body tissues. The normal flow of blood through the heart is disrupted. Even though, Tetralogy of
Fallow is a congenital heart condition with four abnormal defects implicated as the cause, with early

Gennett Record Case Study
On October 3, 1993, the Palladium Item asked the citizens of Richmond, Indiana to clip a coupon and
answer a pressing question: Should we Save or Raze it? The remaining buildings in the Whitewater
Gorge, better known to locals as Starr Valley, was the it in question. Starr Valley was a twenty five
acre industrial complex that was once home to both the Starr Piano Company and Gennett Records.
Starr Piano was one of the largest manufacturers of pianos in the United States in the late nineteenth

in 1915. They were amongst the first companies to release American vernacular forms of music, such

In the 1980s, several local citizens, many who worked at Starr Piano or for the Gennett family
explored ways to preserve and commemorate the historic and finally created a not for profit
organization, the Starr Gennett Foundation. Their initial goals and plans called for a museum to be
built in Starr Valley and the remaining buildings preserved. Several factors, including funding and
local indifference, cause the Foundation to seek other paths to preservation and interpretation. They
arrived at a plan to repurpose the remaining building into an events venue and turn the site into a
Greenway. Additionally, the foundation installed historic interpretation markers and a Walk of Fame.
Each September, the foundation inducts new musicians into the Walk of Fame and promotes several
concerts and community events to celebrate and acknowledge this story. But it is still developed as a

Integration between the Christian Creation Story and the Scientific Big Bang Theory
In our modern age of scientific revolution there seems to be a growing tension between the scientific
and religious understanding of this world. This tension is not surprising as the two worldviews exist
on different realms in many ways. The Christian faith, grounded in the revelation of God through
Christ for humanity s salvation, clashes with science on many levels especially concerning human
nature, as well Divine authority, as compared to the scientific rational and mechanistic understanding
of matter. However in this age of scientific revolution there has been a more concerted effort to
develop ways to integrate the scientific and Christian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Christian practices like prayer, baptism and communion are all drawn from the Bible. Humanity holds
prime importance as we are created in God s image. God is the creator and sustainer of all life on this
earth. These Christian beliefs have come under more scrutiny in an age of scientific revolution.
Science thrives on seeking to provide a framework of understanding for the natural and physical world
of matter. This endeavor involves taking an ever curious approach towards the observable world and
constantly seeks to unravel more of the scientific knowledge of this world. The field is often
concerned about mechanisms and processes that drive the natural phenomena we observe. Scientific
methods often involve the formation of hypothesis from observation of matter, development of
experiments to tests hypotheses, formation of theories and models from conclusions of experiments,
and further refinement of theories to fit other data or new observations. Science often seeks to
generate laws underlying the occurrences in nature, be it the laws of thermodynamics or the
Newtonian laws of motion. Symbols, notations and mathematical equations are often used to provide
this scientific lens of understanding this world. Knowledge gained from scientific endeavor is used to
benefit humanity, in the curing of diseases and technological machinery.

Criterion referenced tests:
According to the Glossary of Education Reform, 2014, criterion referenced assessments are
constructed to measure a learners performance versus an established set of predetermined criteria or
learning standards; written descriptions of expectations for students at a specific stage of their
education. In elementary and secondary education, criterion referenced tests are utilized to evaluate
whether students have learned a specific body of knowledge or acquired a specific proficiency set, for
instance, the curriculum taught in a course, academic program, or content area. (Glossary of Education

Learners that perform at or above the determined expectations let s say, answer a specified percentage
of questions accurately, will pass the test, meet the expected standards, or be considered proficient. On
a criterion referenced test, every student undertaking the exam could hypothetically fail if they don t
meet the expected standard; on the other hand, every learner could earn the highest possible score.

Reasons Behind Head Shaving In The United States
The act of head shaving ranges from pure laziness to punishment, to identifying oneself. Here in
America it is common to see people with shaved heads but there are some cultures or tribes that don t
allow their members to shave their head let alone any part of their body. But in cultures that do the
reasons behind head shaving are plenty.
There are quite a few reasons the military in countries such as the United States, Russia and several
other countries have their soldiers shave their heads, not completely, but short. For example, on D Day
many allied soldiers shaved their heads so that Germans wouldn t have anything to grab onto during
close encounters. Often, when people see military men on the streets with little to no hair they

Cannabis Has Been Proven to Have Therapeutic Benefits
Marijuana has been successfully used in pain management due to its analgesic and anti nausea
properties. Due to this reason, medical practitioners have in the past prescribed it to terminally ill
cancer or AIDS patients and muscle spasms victims. Currently, 15 states have legalized marijuana for
medical use making it easily available too not only terminally ill but others who report chronic pain or
severe nausea . This trend is likely to give rise to substance abuse with socioeconomic impact on the
society.
What is Cannabis? Cannabis occurs naturally as dried flowering of cannabis sativa plant.[1]
Commonly known as marijuana, It is either consumed by smoking or as an infused edible form.
Cannabinoids are the active compounds extracted from cannabis. Currently, marijuana may be
obtained at registered pharmacies over the counter in many states only on the recommendation of
physician. As it is not classified as medicine, prescription cannot be dispensed in measurable quantity.
Not only is it available in raw form but is also sold as a constituent of other edible products such as
muffins, lemon bars, lollipops and gummy bears! This availability of the product in such infused
forms gives the users a false sense of harmlessness associated with its use. The two proven indications
for the use of the synthetic cannabinoid (dronabinol) are chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting
and AIDS related anorexia. Other possible effects that may prove beneficial in the oncology include

The Digital Assistant, Or Pda
The personal digital assistant, or PDA, was a small hand held electronic device that was intended for
use as a simple organizer, including features like a calendar and tasks list. Today, the PDA has fallen
into disuse, replaced by its more popular and powerful successor: the smart phone. Voice recognition
technology is giving rebirth to the spirit of the PDA in the form of new intelligent digital systems
designed to help you manage your affairs. These reborn personal assistants are gaining popularity in
both consumer and business markets due to their ability to streamline commonplace tasks. As new
technologies are discovered, additional applications and markets will be uncovered for this technology
to take root in. A Brief History The idea of digital personal assistants has been around in the public
realm quite a while thanks mainly to Hollywood since the 1960 s. Many movies back in the sixties
would depict computers or other devices that had the ability to plan and organize events with limited
human interaction. Due to the production of several science fiction titles such as Star Trek, Star Wars,
and A Space Odyssey, the early conceptions of such beings as cognitive personal assistants came to
the public eye. Early examples of such devices included Star Trek s talking computer, the Hal 9000,
and R2D2; devices that could in most cases assist or come up with plans instead of requiring humans
to do the organization, reasoning, or brainstorming of all factors in the decision

Power Of Power By Thomas Hobbes
Hobbes (50 Points)
Thomas Hobbes belief was morality arose out of a state of nature that operates outside of your own
being. According to the Leviathan, Hobbes beliefs entailed a state of nature in which all human beings
remain in a constant state of war, where there exists no peace, no justice or injustice, simply force and
fraud(Hobbes, Chapter XIII). Everyone is equal since in the natural state everything is a free for all;
we each have equal vulnerability and no one has true ownership of anything, therefore everything is
free; we are all equal leading to endless war. All that does exist in a natural state is desire,
predominantly one for power. According to Hobbes, power is the most natural and desired out of all
natural things since power leads to one s ability to satisfy his ever changing desires. Desires are
endless and infinite; they lead to the persistence of war in nature. Power satisfies one s need for war
since the more power one has, the more desires of his that he can meet. A common inclination of
humanity is for more power since it is the strongest and most infinite desire; we are left always
wanting more than what we have. Power enables a person to swap and obtain things that meet new
desires as they arise. For a prime example, Hobbes lived during the English Civil War where the King
and royalists fought against the Parliament in a struggle for power. King Charles believed he had
divine power, from God, to rule England and therefore had the power to meet

Josh s The Message

After hearing Josh s presentation, I feel more appropriately informed about this genre s history and the
ways in which its founders and early promoters used this musical form as both an escape and a means

life is forced to turn to prostitution and acquire a pimp because she is unable to maintain an income
otherwise, and the different mentions of theft, an inadequate education system, infestation of rats and
cockroaches in homes, and the filth of the community which was the only place many could afford to
live. The forced laugh at the end emphasizes an achieve happiness, or at the least maintain sanity. The
rappers weren t blissful or happy about the circumstances they described, and the way in which the
laugh is articulated in a choppy and forced nature makes that very clear. Ultimately, I really enjoyed

Re Thinking Queer Bodies Through Law
RE THINKING QUEER BODIES THROUGH LAW
The paper is an attempt to examine body and its construction in the colonial period and its post
colonial impact. I locate this body in the category of queer subject. The colonial administration created
the category of the queer subject as a result of governance, i.e. through the adoption of Indian Penal
Code ( IPC ) in 1860. Section 377 of the IPC criminalized sexual offense against the order of nature
(non procreative sex). The paper historically draws out Section 377 of the IPC. Through a close
reading of the judgment the paper focuses on analysing the limits that the law poses to a discussion of
sexuality. The paper, while recognising the importance of law and legal spaces acknowledges the ...

the use of knowledge to rationalise, systematise and police the Indian subjects), is used as a
framework by post colonial analysts in analysing the constitution of the subject to the formation of the
state. India has two parts to the colonial history. The former when East India Company had the reigns
of command and latter when the Crown controlled the functioning of India. The two differed in the
way in which power was exercised.
Post the Revolt of 1857 saw a reconstitution of the colonial power. One of the most significant one
was the adoption of the IPC in 1860. The IPC was introduced without either an understanding of the
Indian community or consultation with Indian leadership. The colonial administration implicitly
created the queer subject by criminalizing sexual intercourse against the order of nature in Section 377
of the IPC. The primary occupation of the paper is to provide a different reading of the 2009 Delhi

out the frame of my analysis. In the third section in the paper I provide my different reading of the
judgment. In the last two sections I provide the critique of the judgment, examine the limits of law the

  • 2. Darwin And The Scientific Method Summary Darwin and the Scientific Method There has been an apparent disagreement between how Darwin conducted his experimentation and how he publicized his findings to the public. Ayala describes that Darwin follows and inductive approach derived from British philosophers such as John Stuart Mill and Francis Bacon; they believed in making observations without criticizing as to their significance and to gather several of them in order to reach a final conclusion. As Darwin traveled on the H.M.S. Beagle he was in pursuit of knowledge that required observation and experimentation, otherwise known as empirical evidence. In this case, he wanted to explain the origin of organisms and to see if his theory of natural selection is true. Darwin had the fear of being accused in making evaluations based on poorly measured results. There was this urge in formulating hypotheses that can be tested by observable experimentation rather than having ones that appear to be afterthoughts. It has been a false mindset that science advances by gathering experimental results and drawing a conclusion. Bacon and Mill suggested inductive reasoning as a way to gain empirical conclusions not based on personal feelings or opinions. Basically, an ideal scientist should observe any occurrence and record without worrying as to what the truth may be. However, every scientist must have a plan as to what kind event to study and obtain answers to questions they may have on something that interests them. A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Double Standards In Victorian Society In both novels the double standards in society are notable, as women always take the blame and were punished for the same actions that men partook in regularly. Both authors cleverly expose the hypocrisy and double standards in society through the portrayal of their female protagonists. In Hardy s novel, the double standards of society greatly affect Tess s life experience. Tess was expected to work, marry, and support her family as she was the eldest daughter. When she was a young virgin girl, she is seen as desirable by men and society. Consequently, after her relations with Alec D Urberville, she is considered a fallen woman and immoral by Victorian society. Women in Victorian England were expected to be chasted, wholesome and most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Where I come from, one wrong look, one improper word, and blood is spilled. Where I come from, a woman s face is her husband s business only. I want you to remember that. Do you understand? The interaction between Rasheed and Mariam reveals the double standards in society, men set the rules and claimed ownership of women, while women had no say and were regularly silenced by men. He forces her to cover herself, but Mariam discovered in his drawer, Beneath the gun were several magazines with curling corners. Mariam opened one. Something inside her dropped. Her mouth gaped of its own will. One every page were women, beautiful women, who wore no shirts, no trousers, no socks, or underpants. They wore nothing at all. They lay in beds amid tumbled sheets and gazed back at Mariam with half lidded eyes. In most of the pictures, their legs apart, and Mariam had a full view of the dark place between. The sequence of questions which follow, shows the double standard of Rasheed s demands for Mariam and reveals him to be a hypocrite, Who were these women? How could they allow themselves to be photographed this way? ... And what about all his talk of honour and propriety, his disapproval of the female customers, who, after all, were only showing him their feet to get fitted for shoes? ...Surely the women on these pages had husbands, some of them must. At least, they had brothers. If so, why did Rasheed insist that she cover when he thought nothing of looking at the private areas of other men s wives and sisters? Rasheed isn t a devote Muslim, as during Ramadan he didn t observe the fast and came home in a sour mood yet forces his wives to strictly follow religious codes. • 5. Jack Rapke Yesterday, I was granted the opportunity, as a New York Film, Academy alumni , to attend a Q A given by producer, Jack Rapke, preceded by a screening of his newest film, The Walk which is based on a true story. The movie stars Joseph Gordon Levitt (whom Rapke called Joe ) who plays French tightrope walker Phillippe Petit who in 1974, strung a rope connecting the buildings of the world trade center then tightrope walked across it. The movie, directed by Robert Zemeckis (who Rapke called Bob ), starred Joseph Gordon Levitt, who, much to my surprise, did all of his own stunts and speaks fluent French. His acting performance paired with the fact that he had to switch off speaking French and speaking English with a French accent while also balancing tediously on a tightrope was nothing short of astounding. Even with an all star cast and crew, the movie flopped at the box office. After the movie and before the Q A, they set up the lights and the cameras, but not just for the guest speaker. I heard someone yell striking , not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every single student that asked a question was from a different country with a different dialect. I could have remembered this from when I did the NYFA summer program. They love having that diversity and I loved hearing people here and there talk in other languages to one another. It was wonderful to listen to such an experienced person in the industry share his insights on the business. One of the more unusual truths I learned was that talent agents for actors are petrified of their clients. No one wants to break the tough news to one another and agents are no exception. This came as a surprise to because, as an actor, we want desperately to be taken in by an agent, that we fear them and what they will think of us. To realize that they re afraid of their actors too is mind boggling. It s like everyone functions under a mutual terror of one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The protagonist Montresor plots about killing his enemy Fortunato. He takes him to his families vault and builds a wall around him. Montresor lures Fortunato with wine to get the revenge he so well deserved. Montresor accomplishes his quest to kill Fortunato because of his brilliant mind, vengeful nature, and his guilt. Montresor was very organized and knew how to trick Fortunato. In this way he had a brilliant mind. • 7. Thesis Of Last Flight By Amelia Earhart Ibrahim Albaba Mrs. Seeger APUSH || Period 1 Last Flight by Amelia Earhart February 9, 2017 For so much of our history as a people, we are often reminded of the many successful men that accomplished things to make this world a better place. We are reminded about their long, devastating journey to reach their goals and maintain their prosperity; however, not once do we hear of their wives or female siblings. In the early 1900 s it was still presumed that this was the role of the man. A woman from Kansas, however, rose beyond the clouds of prejudice her name Amelia Earhart. Determined and hard working, this woman set on surpassing the limits previously placed on women, and in her book, Last Flight, Amelia Earhart fought the many odds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On April 8, 1931, she set the altitude record by flying 18,415 feet. On January 11, 1935, she became the first person to fly across the Pacific from Honolulu to Oakland (Earhart 89 93). All this was done during a time and place where people lossed their jobs, and the economy was bad. Unemployment rate almost tripled between 1930 and 1933 as it jumped from 8.9 percent to 24.9 percent. Americans relied on Earhart s successes as national achievements and viewed them as encouragement through all of the unrest of the great depression. It was a signal that while America s economy was still weakening, the country s spirit to accomplish was still strong. It was also a symbol that the American dream was still active and that, at least in some way, those who worked hard would be compensated. Her accomplishments proved to the world that women were equal, and lifted America to the center stage of civil rights. In conclusion, the book Last Flight, by Amelia Earhart, portrayed a critical moment in American History; traditional viewpoints were challenged, aviation became ingrained in the American culture, and women became major players in the American Dream. Amelia Earhart s accomplishments have jarring similarities to Valentina Tereshkova the first woman in space, orbiting the earth forty eight times. She put the previous four American astronauts all male to shame with their combined total of thirty six. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Examples Of High-Class Conflict In The Great Gatsby The cynosures of the 1920s were people in the high class society . They had abundant amounts of money, as well as bragging rights to do as they please. One of the most prominent themes in The Great Gatsby is the social class conflicts in the 1920s. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays this through rich versus poor conflicts, as well as through Old Money versus New Money conflicts. In this novel, rich are treated significantly different from the poor. The first time the reader really sees this conflict is when Daisy makes fun of their butler. As if spreading gossip, Daisy bluntly asks, Do you want to hear about the butler (Fitzgerald pg17)? She then goes on to explain that he can not smell because of his old job, which was for lower class people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because of this mishap, Myrtle strives to be with the prosperous Tom Buchanan throughout the book, but no man would step down in class just to be with a woman at the social status that Myrtle is at. As a result of the social status difference, Myrtle has no right to speak about Daisy because she is so far below her. This issue becomes present at the end of chapter 3 when Myrtle, out of spite and ignorance, begins to shout Daisy s name. Tom is the most dominant character throughout the novel, and with one swift upward motion broke her nose with his open hand (Fitzgerald pg41). Rudimentary ideas get passed down throughout generations, but the ways in which people interact change due to the different to social differences. In today s world people go about their day using smartphones to text and call people. This was something that previous generations were not able to do, thus creating a change in the ways that people express themselves to others. This idea is exactly what Flannery O Connor was writing about throughout Everything that Rises Must Converge . O Connor uses the theme of racism to emphasise the similarities and differences between Julian and his mother s generations, but how they still are mentally very similar. Julian and his mother have very similar personalities even though they think that they are the exact opposite. Julian s mother thinks a lot about the way that people view her. She cares about the appearance that she gives off so everyone can see how rich or great she is. She shows this off in one way by the house that she lives in Since this had been a fashionable neighborhood forty years ago, his mother persisted in thinking they did well to have an apartment in it (O Connor 273). The Reformation s challenge to Church authority revolution Europe because people did not accept earlier authorities, questioned earlier authorities thoughts, and started to think for themselves and said that God was not always the answer. State owned enterprises are regarded as a particular circumstance of business organisations and considered as the basis of economic growth in many countries (Zhang, 2011). It can be seen that the proportion of state owned companies has increased from nine percent in 2005 to 23 percent in 2014 especially in China which has a proportion of 15 percent in 2014 (PwC, 2015). Furthermore, state owned companies might be a necessary tool for development in emerging countries, because they can be directed and achieved by governments. Although state owned companies have played an important role in an economy, they sometimes seem to perform poorly compared with private sectors on average in many countries, partly because the goals of public policy sometimes are complicated to be achieved (World Bank Group, 2014). Therefore, many countries have decided to privatise because they have expected that private sectors would operate and perform better than the government would do. Thus, privatisation has become an international phenomenon globally particularly in addressing inefficiency from state enterprises. However, there might have some benefits and drawbacks of privatisations, but all of the procedures are most likely to depend on the quality of contracts and regulation in each circumstance. For this reason, this essay will examine: firstly, the agency costs that seem to occur in state owned companies, secondly a privatisation will be analysed as a result from those costs. Thirdly, ... Yet, as we see in the characters of Jack and Babette, the fear continues to rear its ugly head and fill them with terror. DeLillo shows this close relationship between life and death. This is similar to Hitler, from my own knowledge, I already know that Hitler thought the more people he killed the more power he would gain and the more invincible he would feel. Jack seems to have the same mindset because he thinks killing a man will give him more time. He is almost trying to cheat death and outlive the chemical inside of him. I feel like Jack thinks that if he kills someone, he gains whatever years they had left. As any rational person would know, this is just simply impossible, but Jack seems to believe this illusion is his ticket to maximizing the time he has left. The common theme between these two passages is that death is an inescapable process. I found it very interesting that the toxic event happened before Jack shot Willie Mink. The toxic event only made it more clear to Jack that he is going to die because of his chemical exposure, however it also hastened his dying process. • 30. The Digital Assistant, Or Pda The personal digital assistant, or PDA, was a small hand held electronic device that was intended for use as a simple organizer, including features like a calendar and tasks list. Today, the PDA has fallen into disuse, replaced by its more popular and powerful successor: the smart phone. Voice recognition technology is giving rebirth to the spirit of the PDA in the form of new intelligent digital systems designed to help you manage your affairs. These reborn personal assistants are gaining popularity in both consumer and business markets due to their ability to streamline commonplace tasks. As new technologies are discovered, additional applications and markets will be uncovered for this technology to take root in. A Brief History The idea of digital personal assistants has been around in the public realm quite a while thanks mainly to Hollywood since the 1960 s. Many movies back in the sixties would depict computers or other devices that had the ability to plan and organize events with limited human interaction. Due to the production of several science fiction titles such as Star Trek, Star Wars, and A Space Odyssey, the early conceptions of such beings as cognitive personal assistants came to the public eye. Early examples of such devices included Star Trek s talking computer, the Hal 9000, and R2D2; devices that could in most cases assist or come up with plans instead of requiring humans to do the organization, reasoning, or brainstorming of all factors in the decision ... • 33. Power Of Power By Thomas Hobbes Hobbes (50 Points) Thomas Hobbes belief was morality arose out of a state of nature that operates outside of your own being. According to the Leviathan, Hobbes beliefs entailed a state of nature in which all human beings remain in a constant state of war, where there exists no peace, no justice or injustice, simply force and fraud(Hobbes, Chapter XIII). Everyone is equal since in the natural state everything is a free for all; we each have equal vulnerability and no one has true ownership of anything, therefore everything is free; we are all equal leading to endless war. All that does exist in a natural state is desire, predominantly one for power. According to Hobbes, power is the most natural and desired out of all natural things since power leads to one s ability to satisfy his ever changing desires. Desires are endless and infinite; they lead to the persistence of war in nature. Power satisfies one s need for war since the more power one has, the more desires of his that he can meet. A common inclination of humanity is for more power since it is the strongest and most infinite desire; we are left always wanting more than what we have. Power enables a person to swap and obtain things that meet new desires as they arise. For a prime example, Hobbes lived during the English Civil War where the King and royalists fought against the Parliament in a struggle for power. King Charles believed he had divine power, from God, to rule England and therefore had the power to meet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Josh s The Message I found Josh s presentation on The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five to be very compelling. Rap music is the most popular genre of music amongst American adolescence, and especially amongst Latino and African American adolescence. Although an immensely popular genre, and one which I am a regular listener, I was completely unaware about the origins of this music genre. After hearing Josh s presentation, I feel more appropriately informed about this genre s history and the ways in which its founders and early promoters used this musical form as both an escape and a means of articulating their hardships. In his presentation, Josh provided a thorough history and explanation of the circumstances in which the song s writers lived, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The chorus exposes how painfully difficult it was to maintain sanity for the individuals living in South Bronx at times, and each set of lyrics presents a new reason as to why the circumstances are bleak. For example, discussing how a young woman moved to the city in the hopes of pursuing a more exciting life is forced to turn to prostitution and acquire a pimp because she is unable to maintain an income otherwise, and the different mentions of theft, an inadequate education system, infestation of rats and cockroaches in homes, and the filth of the community which was the only place many could afford to live. The forced laugh at the end emphasizes an achieve happiness, or at the least maintain sanity. The rappers weren t blissful or happy about the circumstances they described, and the way in which the laugh is articulated in a choppy and forced nature makes that very clear. Ultimately, I really enjoyed Josh s presentation because he gave the class a thorough, insider perspective into life in South Bronx by elaborating on the history and explaining the meaning behind various lines in The ... • 35. Re Thinking Queer Bodies Through Law RE THINKING QUEER BODIES THROUGH LAW The paper is an attempt to examine body and its construction in the colonial period and its post colonial impact. I locate this body in the category of queer subject. The colonial administration created the category of the queer subject as a result of governance, i.e. through the adoption of Indian Penal Code ( IPC ) in 1860. Section 377 of the IPC criminalized sexual offense against the order of nature (non procreative sex). The paper historically draws out Section 377 of the IPC. Through a close reading of the judgment the paper focuses on analysing the limits that the law poses to a discussion of sexuality. India has two parts to the colonial history. The former when East India Company had the reigns of command and latter when the Crown controlled the functioning of India. The two differed in the way in which power was exercised. Post the Revolt of 1857 saw a reconstitution of the colonial power. One of the most significant one was the adoption of the IPC in 1860. The IPC was introduced without either an understanding of the Indian community or consultation with Indian leadership. The colonial administration implicitly created the queer subject by criminalizing sexual intercourse against the order of nature in Section 377 of the IPC. The primary occupation of the paper is to provide a different reading of the 2009 Delhi High Court Judgment on Section 377 of the IPC(Naz Foundation (India) Trust vs. Government of India Ors WP (C) No.7455/2001 (Delhi High Court July 2, 2009).
