Critical Analysis Of Steven Pinker s In Defense Of...
In disagreements, the goal is to persuade others to believe and think the same way you do. The way to
lure them to your side is to find ways to make your argument stand out, and make them really think
about why they felt the way they did, to begin with. Steven Pinker, a psychologist, and professor
wrote an essay called, In Defense of Dangerous Ideas, where he argues that dangerous ideas are only
considered to be dangerous to those who believe in the label society has given them. Pinker defines
dangerous ideas as being, ideas that are denounced not because they are self evidently false, nor
because they advocate harmful action, but because they are thought to corrode the prevailing moral
order. Pinker uses this essay to attempt to effectively argue that dangerous ideas are only that if people
allow them to control how what is said makes them feel. Pinker uses poor terminology, sarcastic tone,
and poor ethos through lack of structure, making his argument ineffective.
Ethos has a great impact on the argument due to when and how the author s language is used to make
is points as strong as possible, and the author Pinker has an issue with this. His use of language, his
diction, come off very aggressive. Pinker chooses the words he uses carefully throughout the essay to
intentionally try to offend the audience. He starts off his essay with a list of questions that he hopes to
get your blood pressure rise. Then later states, The ideas listed above, and the moral panic that

A Perfect Health Care System
I feel as if we will never have a perfect health care system in place. No matter what we try, something
will always need tweaked. We need to find a way that makes health care more affordable for everyone.
With Obama care we had an option for everyone to get health insurance. Now what the government is
trying to pass through will cause million of people to lose their health care. Also, Medicaid is going to
be reduced by millions. So many poor, disabled, and old people will lose their insurance making it
hard for them to get the help they need. Politicians make us think there is just a simple fix to our
health care system, but it s much more complex then that. I don t believe there is just one simple fix to

Personal Lessons Learned
From an early age I was taught the importance of personal integrity and the importance of being
adaptable and prepared for any stressful situation that life may throw at you. During my time as a boy
scout I was constantly taught to be prepared and to also to always be at the service of others. At the
end of our camping trips we would be told repeatedly to leave this place, better than when you found
it and this lesson has translated into my own life. I want to make the world a better (safer) place than
when I found it. As I grew up, these lessons continued to play a key role in the decisions I made and
have made me into the man that I ve become today.
While in middle school and into high school I had the opportunity to be exposed to many cultures that
were different than my own. I volunteered weekly through my church in a predominately Hispanic
community that was located in the Port of Houston. The neighborhood was extremely impoverished
and many of the students were involved in gangs, or had one or more parents that were incarcerated.
The more I worked with these young men and women, the more I learned about myself and that the
lesson I learned years prior of making the world better than when you found it rang true. This

The Intent Behind the Enuma Elish (Creation Epic) Essay
The Intent Behind the Enuma Elish
The Enuma Elish, often known as The Creation Epic, is often considered the primary source of
Mesopotamian cosmology. However, to view the Enuma Elish as a cosmological myth obscures the
true intent of the epicís author. The cosmological elements of the Enuma Elish are secondary to the
authorís effort to explain the supremacy of Marduk, to justify absolute oriental monarchy, and to
defend Babylon as the axis mundi.
The Enuma Elish was composed in Babylonin the early second millennium B.C.E. The decay of
Sumerian civilization allowed the Old Babylonian Empire to become the cultural and political center
of Mesopotamia. Babylon was governed by absolute and despotic kings capable of wielding ... Show

Furthermore, the transfer of power to Babylon is illustrated by the subjugation of all gods to the rule
of Marduk. After erecting a throne for Marduk, the gods proclaim, Thou art (the most) important of
the great gods; Thy destiny is unequaled, thy command is (like that of) AnuÖTo thee we have given
kingship over the totality of the whole universe ( Enuma Elish, 36). This statement reflects the reality
of the times. During the writing of the Enuma Elish the Old Babylonian Empire weilded supreme
power in Mesopotamia.
Moreover, the recognition Mardukís absolute rule is etiological in relation to the power of the
Babylonian kings. According to Assyriologist Benjamin Foster, the Enuma Elish explains the
evolution from early government by elders to absolute monarchy. As the battle between Marduk and
Tiamat illustrates, Foster notes the catalyst for this change is portrayed as outside threat calling for a
war leader. The leader demanded, as his terms for leadership, absolute obedience, even when the
threat of war was removed (Foster, 9).
Once the writer of the Enuma Elish set forth the supremacy of the Babylonian God and the precedent
for earthly monarchy, he/she turned to the task of translating divine superiority to earthly. The process
of translating divine power to earthly power begins on line 50 of Tablet IV of the Enuma Elish.
Grateful for Mardukís leadership, the gods construct the

The Leader And The Follower
Quote from Jerry Rice Today I will do what others won t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others
can t . Leadership is not a title; it is not a trade, or some sort of hierarchy. Positive leadership is really
something more. For leadership to exist, the leader has to have influence to lead oneself, and to lead
others. Leadership at its core is a process of influence, meaning the influence must be transactional.
The leader must affect the follower by setting goals, and the follower must affect the leader by setting
goals. As the leader and the follower come together in a common understanding, and with a common
sense of purpose, only then can they begin to move together to accomplish a common goal.
Self Assessment: Social motives, Leadership Style, Styles of Conflict, Leader Member Exchange. The
definition of an achievement leader is for management to set challenging goals, assists in training,
emphasize improvement, and expect the highest levels of performance. I personally believe an
achievement leader is one who believes it is the best to get the job done right, by keeping their
employees happy. Positive results from this are creativity in the workplace, departments working
together as a team, motivation within the company, and a low retention rate. The negative results are
too much responsibility for the employee, with no guidance from the leader. Including low
performance skills and failure to do the task that are presented. The modern business environment

Essay On Ideology Of Pakistan
The consequences of independence from British control over India and demise of British colonial
power in the South Asian subcontinent led to the genesis of a new country up on the world map on
14th August 1947. Undoubtedly, the fundaments of the demand of a separate country were based on
the religious identity and an intention to provide a secure haven for the Muslims from Hindu
dominated India. However, Pakistan was not meant to be a theocratic state, in which the rulers of
government are vested with the uncontrolled power of religion. Instead, the founder of Pakistan
Muhammad Ali Jinnah not only wanted an independent state for Muslims, in which Islam had primary
role affirmed by the apparatus of the state but also a place in which other faith groups could live with

2.2 Ideology of Pakistan
The ideology of Pakistan was two nation theory, according to which, Muslims and Hindus are two
distinct nations from every aspect of their lives. One of the core reasons of the separation of the
Subcontinent was that, post colonial Indian state failed to offer reasonable options to its Muslims
minority to sustain in India. Therefore, the problem of minority rights was the cutting edge of all the
political debates revolving around the formation of Pakistan.
While Jinnah s approach represented a state having equality for all and free from any kind of
discrimination of religion, caste and creed, there was a demand from fundamentalist Islamic leaders
for a strict Islamic mechanism to run the state affairs. Jinnah demanded a state for Muslims minority
in India, where religious freedom offered to other faith groups could be observed as the matter of
tolerance and acceptance on behalf of the Muslim majority.

Impact Of Space On The Space Industry
Space Industry is a broad term. It includes a huge variety of different sectors and industries. It is not
easy to track down an accurate definition of its boundaries. Estimation of the global value of the
industry present significant discrepancies. It can be agreed, however, that the Space industry generates
important revenues: SIA estimates USD 322.7 billion of global revenues for the industry in 2014,
while the Space Foundation estimates USD 330 billion.
The space economy has presented a constant and sustained growth over the last 40 years. As we can

In broad terms, the literature distinguishes between three different sectors: scientific, military, and
commercial.
The scientific sector aims to develop new academic and technological knowledge, providing other
sectors the capabilities needed for their activities. Universities and research institutes are important
scientific and technological actors. The military sector, on the other hand, provides the conditions
required to secure national assets. Last but not least, the commercial sector aims to create richness and
business growth out of the Space industry. It is of fundamental importance for the sustainability of the
Space sector as a whole, as, differently from the scientific and military, is the only one specifically
designed to be profitable.
As the final objective is to provide an overview for the development of a sustainable Space strategy in
South Australia, the commercial sector will be the crucial unit of analysis of the paper, but not the only
one, as each sector is closely linked with the others, and has no chance to survive in isolation.
SPACE INDUSTRY S VALUE CHAIN
When asked about space activities, most people tend to think about big government and public funded
projects such as the International Space Station (ISS), the Voyager program, which is now exploring
the boundaries of our solar system, or the Mars Rover, which is studying Mars surface. This is
understandable, as such

Teaching Is An Effective Teacher And Create A Better...
The community in which I will be teaching believes that character education should be taught in the
schools. As I plan to teach first and second graders in the elementary schools, I will include character
education in my classroom by using four simple rules. Be honest, be caring, have respect and listen.
Students, parents, faculty members and I will be expected to follow all of these simple rules upon
entering my classroom. We will be honest and truthful in the things we share. We will care about
others feelings, and make it a priority to have my classroom as a comfortable setting in which my
students can learn. We will have respect for all of whom enter into the walls of my classroom. We will
listen to the instruction given and follow it to its entirety and fullness. When we fail to maintain one of
these rules or standards, we will simply try again. As I plan to apply these rules in every aspect, my
goal is to become an effective teacher and create a better learning environment for my students. In
essence, I will have a classroom in which other students and teachers will look to. I know that one way
that I can apply these standards is by motivating my students in learning and in their lives. Students
need to be involved and learning as much as they can. From personal experience, I know that where I
learned the most was in settings in which were comfortable, there was respect. My teachers cared and

Criticism Of Praise Praise
Praise is an action that parents, teachers, and adults overly use when they desire an action from
students and children. Most of the time, adults say phrases such as Good Job or Fantastic to boost the
moral of students or children. But praise doesn t always lead to positive growth of an individual in the
long run. There is, however, a stronger alternative to praise that many 21st century Western societies
haven t quite accepted. This is known as criticism. We see criticism everywhere in our daily lives;
from the workplace, to sporting events and competitions, and even in schools across America. It s a lot
stronger than praise because it provides students with a basis of comparison, and truth and honesty.
Therefore, criticism has a better long term effect on feedback and growth and should be balanced with
praise because it allows students to learn from previous mistakes or issues, forcing them to make a
positive change about themselves that could potentially help in the future. There are many problems
that appear with the use of general praise on its own. For one, praise feeds into the ego of a student,
forcing them into a lazy mindset from the overflow of approval. Carol Dweck, a theorist of human
motivation, believes that praising traits feed the belief that talent is fixed, which makes kids less
willing to take on new challenges that might expose them as less naturally able (Kamenetz). With
praise, the child will be less determined to take risks and complete

The threat of substitutes, however, is a very real threat. The soft drink industry is very strong, but

could have a serious affect. Of course, both Coke and Pepsi have already diversified into these

Themes Of Feminism In Harriet The Spy
It is often questioned whether tween literature is too mature for its targeted age group. With themes of
murder, sexual abuse, neglect, and other forms of violence, both physical and psychological, there
seems to be one topic that is slightly more prevalent when speaking about tween literature. Tween
literature and culture is often marketed towards young girls and their parents, because of this, it
becomes easy to talk about themes of feminism in tween literature. More specifically, due to the time
period in which tween culture became mainstream, postfeminism is a topic that is often heavily
discussed around tween literature. Both Gail Levine s novel, Ella Enchanted, as well as Louise
Fitzhugh s novel Harriet the Spy, can both be analyzed using a postfeminist lense. By using a
postfeminist lense in analyzing these books, the issues of postfeminism become apparent when
addressing issues such as a false sense of choice for young girls, an idea that they must be ashamed for
who they are and the views that they hold. It is further complicated when it becomes apparent that due
to postfeminist ideology, women, and specifically young girls have lost the ability to articulate sexism
when it affects them. Through these points of contention regarding postfeminism, it becomes aparent
that society is not quite ready to hold postfeminist views, since there is still an imbalance of power
that women face on a day to day basis. It is important to have a baseline understanding of what

Literary Analysis of the Enlightenment Period and...
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the literary world witnessed the birth of the
Enlightenment and Romantic Periods. There were similarities as well as very notable differences
between the two. There were also two prominent voices that gained notoriety during each of these two
periods. Voltaire is considered to be the pioneer of the power of reason and Rousseau is looked upon
as a legendary figure of Nineteenth Century Romanticism. This analysis will evaluate the two eras,
both writers and a literary piece.
The Enlightenment Era gave way to an age of reasoning. During this time, the writers were regarded
as philosophers. They came up with diverse theories and possessed different points of view. Never the

The focus is now shifted to individualism, emotions, and nature. (James 485)These themes provided
new ideas and different means to interpret and understand the world in a whole new light. Reasoning
was no longer the most important concept that guided society s way of looking at the world.
During the Romantic Era, the individual became more important than in the past. According to J.M.
Cohen, this era encouraged people to look at themselves not as fragments extending from heaven to
the natural world but as inimitable entities eminent in their own authenticity. (Cohen, 7) This idea
indicates that man is a distinct being entitled to explore and express his own feelings and thoughts.
Simply put, examine the man as an individual and not as a unit.
The Romantic Era was a period of that examined emotions and put them into words. Romantics
abandoned the logical traditional Western World thought which believed that intelligence was the
method used to understand the world. However, the Romantics opted to espouse imagination and
feelings as a veritable approach to empathize the world. (James ,488)
Lastly, the Romantic Era blended human emotions with nature. The interfacing of emotion and nature
was emblematic of Romantic poetry, whether it engrossed the idea of bequeathing human emotions to
an innate article like a river or connecting the scenery to the temperament of the writer. (James, 491)

The History of the First Emperor of China
On March 29, 1974, a couple of workers were digging a water well on the east side of Mount Li
outside of the city of Xi an. The workers uncovered a single terracotta figure and called the
government authorities who investigated the matter. Soon, government archeologists were sent to the
site. The unearthed great clay army that has baffled modern day craftsmen, intrigued archeologists,
and amazed the general public. Before this discovery, no one knew about the First Emperor of China.
Forty years later, we know a good deal about his legacy. Ying Zheng was born in 259 BCE to the King

Lack of historical records makes some historians question the association between the First Emperor
and the construction of the wall. What is certain, however, is that if the First Emperor gave the orders
to build the Great Wall, it was not built as we know it today. The walls would have been made of
stones or earth, depending on what was more readily available. The philosophies of the time included
Confucianism and Legalism, as simplified by modern scholar Arthur Waley in his book, Three Ways
of Thought in Ancient China. Confucianism was considered bad and impractical, based on the idea
that it was ruler based and hind sighted. The Legalists were considered good and practical because the
administrations they set up were run by qualified men, used agriculture to stimulate the economy, and
created clear laws. In fact, the First Emperor ordered the burning of several Confucius texts part of the
Five Classics including the Book of Poetry and the Book of Documents. This was knows as the
Burning of the Books. This burning also included other literature such as poetry, historical documents,
and philosophical texts. This was done because the emperor felt threatened by those below him with
something critical to say. [All] persons in the empire daring to store [these books] should go to the

Media Portrayal Of Violence In The Media
The risk of developing aggressive behavior is high among children who were raised in a negative
environment such as social and economic factors play a huge role. The primary place a children is in
is at home. Poverty has a significant impact on a child s social behavior these children that are raised
in poor environments have a higher risk of behavior problems. Impoverished communities have a
wide range of people living there not all the people in that neighborhood may have the same parenting
styles or teach their child to behave. Children in impoverished neighborhoods can often play with
other kids outdoors and since other children may not be raised to behave well they will bring that
behavior in their homes and begin to use it. Potential behavior that can arise from other children who
do not behave can lead to not respecting others, anger, and violence.
The media has been linked to aggressive behavior in children. The outcome of media portrayal of
violence can have lasting effects such as children can be begin to feel less sensitive to the pain and
suffering of others. Sometimes watching violence can even be enjoyable because of how the media
plays it out to be. It may be funny or no consequences or punishment to violent act committed.
Violence seems to be everywhere, on television, news, video games and especially movies this creates
a distorted view of what reality truly is. Children that watch violence on television will at some point

Essay Question: Critically evaluate either the music, tourism, hospitality or events sectors role as a
vehicle for sustainable development.
The events sector has a big impact on the economy, creating substantial and seasonal job
opportunities. The profound development of the sector over the years has created a sustainable
environment for it to expand therefore being a strong vehicle for sustainable development. Sustainable
development being a process which has means to maintain the ability of natural systems whilst
meeting particular needs of the present. Doing this without negotiating the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs. Future focus is the main goal however this does not necessarily mean we lose
out now as we cannot achieve this unless we change the way things are now for better. Focusing on
the way we work and achieving a higher quality is the main key. Looking at sustainability in the

clearer then in Siddhartha. These were some of the factors that combined to produce a situation where
Never Cry Wolf captured my attention more than Siddhartha. It was for these reasons that I chose the
novel by Farley Mowat.
In my opinion, Never Cry Wolf placed humans in the role of intruders as far as nature is concerned.
Mowat cites several instances where humans violate nature and represent a threat to its sanctity. Even
though this threat is not reciprocated by nature, humans continue to infringe upon nature and then
deny the consequences of their actions. Two prevalent examples of this occur: when
Mowat accidentally wanders into the wolves den when the wolves are there, and again when he
discovers a herd of deer that have been slaughtered by hunters.

The pigment called melanin is found in this layer. Melanin protects the sensitive cells beneath, from
the harmful effects of the sun. The greater the exposure to sunlight the greater the production of
melanin. 2. The dermis or the inner layer is located just under the epidermis. This layer is highly
sensitive because it contains nerve endings. It also contains numerous blood vessels, lymph vessels,
sweat glands, sebaceous glands and hair follicles. These are held together by collagen and elastin
fibers, which together give the skin its strength and resilience. Page 4 Back to the Table of Contents.

Each hair follicle has a sebaceous gland, which produces sebum. Excess sebum makes your skin look
and feel oily. If the neck of a sebaceous gland is clogged, sebum accumulates, giving rise to acne. A
deficiency in the production of sebum produces dry skin. Your teenage years could be your best time
or your worst time depending on your hormonal activity. Generally, puberty is a bad time for your
skin. If you are spared the onslaught of acne and pimples usually associated with the teenage years,
then more than likely your 20 s and 30 s should be trouble free. During your 20 s your skin should
look its best. It can however be adversely affected by allergies, hormonal imbalances, stress, and

Executive Summary
Primary problem
Mr. Hyland is trying to find suitable markets for expanding his granite rock business profitably by
relinquishing some control of his business. Mr. Hyland is also concerned with achieving a balance
between his local business interests and family life in Canada.
Alternatives 1. Keep ongoing operations as is (status quo) 2. Service Boston, Hamburg and London

Higher prices lead to lower demand compared to the competitors granite products. Delays will also
lead to poor service, meaning lower goodwill as well as lost sales. 2. The average cost of auto propane
trading worldwide at US$6.40 is expected to rise given growing global fuel demand. The higher cost
of auto propane will also increase the price of the granite products that MNG intends to ship to foreign
markets. 3. The Canadian gardening market is heavily saturated, and even more so as the granite
business grows. With the advent of the internet, customers have more options to find cheaper
alternatives to MNG s products. This also means the company s market share is significantly reduced.
4. Language and social differences in potential markets act as barriers to business activities. Without
knowledge of the foreign languages, conducting business transactions becomes harder. The culture
differences make it even more complicated, since there are differences in business etiquette depending
on the country. 5. Balancing family time and business is also important for Mr. Hyland. Running a
business like this is time consuming and gets in the way of his aim for more family time.

Instructional Design Models Are Not Just Boxes And Arrows
In my opinion Instructional design models are not just boxes and arrows, they have practical value in
real life instructional design projects and to clarify that, I will first of all define what is instructional
design, define instructional analysis, define instructional design models, discuss component of models
and finally using one of the most widely known and used instructional design model to create a
practical real life instructional design project with topic titled ENGLISH LANGUAGE SENTENCES
AND PHRASES. Instructional design is defined as a system using learning theory that creates
specifications for the development and implementation of learning experiences, materials, and
environments (Whitmyer, 1999). According to Dick and Carey, An instructional analysis is a set of
procedures that, when applied to an instructional goal, results in the identification of the relevant steps
for performing a goal and the subordinate skills required for a student to achieve the goal Thus, the
instructional analysis breaks the skills described in your goal statement down into smaller steps, and
then identifies any other relevant skills that might be necessary. The instructional analysis is
developed from your goal statement, which highlights the importance of making sure your goal
statement is well written and worthwhile. Dick and Carey actually break the instructional analysis step
into two parts: Goal Analysis and Subordinate Skills Analysis. Instructional design models serve as

How Is Canada A Reborn Nation
The following source should be embraced to its full extent, as Canada was a changed and almost
reborn nation in terms of its people s undying pride. While our people endured unfathomable
hardships, we became a stronger nation. Throughout our lives, we endure through hardships unique to
which we are. A much more extreme version of this can be seen through Canada and the First World
War. For example, on a soccer team, someone can expect a wide variety of different challenges seen
through games. You may face a team who challenges you more than any other, and you may face a
team who against all odds you must beat. However, through these games and battles, a team grows
closer and takes pride in their efforts and victories as a whole. The same can be said for Canada s
efforts in the First World War. Against all odds; a country not known for their military might ... Show

Vimy Ridge thought to be impenetrable. With the British facing numerous casualties and little
progress on taking Vimy Ridge, Canada pushed forward and with a plan and the might of nearly 1000
artillery weapons laying down fire, Canada was awarded a crucial victory. Brigadier general A.E Ross
stated, In those few moments, I witnessed the birth of a nation. Canadians from all over the country
and different divisions of the army stood together and fought side by side to win this victory. To this
day there is a memorial in France in recognition of the great sacrifices of Canadians. On this day,
Canada proved that they were a nation that would not bend to the will nor the might of others, and
would not turn away in the face of great risk and challenge. This victory gave Canadians a symbol of
our might and an example of what we could achieve. Our pride, strength, and overall nationalism were
given a victory we could give face too. We gained recognition from larger, more powerful countries

BACKGROUND
The United States has a quite different educational system than China. In China, there is not
something like GMAT or GRE in the process of application. After the students pass the national exams
for English politics and math, they will need to go through the major course test of the university in
which they applied. Chinese students can just apply for one university s master degree in the end of
their senior year. However, if international students want to apply for master degrees in the United
States, they need to start in the end of their junior year. In addition, there are also many additional
requirements for international students in the admission process. As a result, most international

Persuasive Essay On Childhood Obesity
A Deeper Look into Childhood Obesity The percentage of children with obesity in the United States
has more than tripled since the 1970s ( Healthy Schools. ). Childhood obesity is a medical condition
that affects children and teenagers who contain excess body fat. This condition is very common today,
having about 3 million cases per year ( Healthy Schools. ). A sign that a child is suffering from obesity
is when their weight is well above the average for a child s height and age. Today about one in five
school children, ages 6 19, are obese ( Healthy Schools. ). I will be addressing the causes, health
complications, treatments, controversy, and supporting obese students. First and foremost, the most
common causes of childhood obesity are genetic factors, overeating, and not exercising enough.
Although obesity may run in a family, it does not determine whether a child will be obese or not (
Obesity in Children ). If a child who comes from a family of obesity, happens to become overweight
like them, the likely cause is due to bad eating and activity habits. Many children today spend more
time inside the house eating and watching television, rather than being active outdoors ( Obesity in
Children ). This is due to the recent popularity of having electronics such as television, games, and
phones serve as entertainment. Another reason for the excessive eating is because parents are often too
busy to cook healthy foods on a regular basis, leaving children to rely on fast food or

a) The different majors of students taking MM207.
b) The number of hours spent on school work by students in MM207.
9. Using the range rule of thumb estimate the standard deviation for the number of credit hours
students in this sample are taking and the shoe sizes of the females in the class. Then using StatCrunch
compute the actual standard deviation. Compare the results.
a) Does the range rule of thumb overestimate or underestimate the standard deviation for number of
credit hours?
The range rule of thumb over estimates the standard deviation for credit hours. The estimates
deviation is 3.75 while the actual is 2.56
b) Does the range rule of thumb overestimate or underestimate the standard deviation for shoe sizes of
females?
The range rule of thumb overestimates again this time only by a little, with the estimate at 1.75 and the
actual at 1.29.
c) How does the shape of the distribution impact what you conclude?
The shape of both data sets fall within the rule of thumb estimate and that actual standard deviation.
There is a much high range for both and that is because there are several data samples that fall outside
of the standard deviation.

Benigni s Life Is Beautiful
Distance the film maintains from realistic depictions of the holocaust enables the director to use
history to remind the audience of the moral lessons that it contains. Life is Beautiful begins by stating
that it is a fable, defying genre yet still it still sets out in its goal in influencing or creating new values
and attitudes. A fable is a story often beyond reality, to provide a moral lesson. Fairy tale cannon
bookends the movie, it begins with a voiceover, This is a simple story, but not an easy one to tell. Like
a fable, there is sorrow and, like a fable, it is full of wonder and happiness. The film is closed with,

We say tiredness , fear , pain . But they are free words created by men who lived in comfort and
suffering in their homes... Benigni taps into a new aspect of history and focuses on the social attitudes
of the time and tries to impact the current state. Negative reviews claim the representation of the past
could have a detrimental impact, There is a serious point there if we see films like that, at least
subconsciously they end up giving the message that maybe it was not quite so bad after all. In his
representation Benigni was not trying to undermine the holocaust, from the beginning Benigni states
that he is depicting a fable, not a historical documentary he just wants to share moral lessons, as
mentioned before he did not want to offend Jewish people through his depiction, he wanted to show
their strength. The charge of holocaust distortion... embodies the assumption the audience s
understanding of the holocaust would be modified through their identification with the child s point of
view seems to underestimate the sophistication of the film and its audience. In representing the past
through a child s perspective Benigni aims to influence or create values and attitudes essential to the
moral consciousness post holocaust rather than accurately depict

In agreed value insurance policies, you are in control of the amount your classic motorcycle is insured

figure you and your insurance provider agreed to.
An agreed value policy reduces the risk of you not being able to rebuild or replace your classic

American Treatment of the Indian Tribes Essay
American Treatment of the Indian Tribes
The American Indian lived a life being one with nature. In their way, they understood the ecological
demands of the land and knew that if they took care of the land the land would take care of them. They

The American Indians were known as migratory hunters who followed the buffalo as their main
staple. This led to the belief that Indians had no attachment to any particular lands. This belief ignored
the facts that some tribes harvested crops and lived in settled villages. Further push to the West to
develop the land resulted in the removal of Indians from those lands.
As the Civil War closed, the Indians with the white settlers moving into their lands and a main source
of livelihood the buffalo threatened with extinction, was faced with a fundamental choice: surrender or
fight. Many chose to fight. In 1887 the Dawes Act made it possible for Indians to own their own land.
This Act aiming to end tribal life authorized the President to allot portions of land to individual
Indians 160 acres to each head of family and 80 acres to others. The land was to be used to establish
private farms, and authorized the Secretary of Interior to negotiate with the tribes for purchasing
quot;excess quot; lands for non Indian settlement. The real purpose of the act was to further break up
the tribes by acquiring more land. Tribes as a whole were not willing to give up any portion of the
land, but as individual owners, the Indians were more liable to sell the land. This resulted in the Indian
land holdings decreasing from 138 million acres to 48 million half of this being barren land.

  • 4. Critical Analysis Of Steven Pinker s In Defense Of... In disagreements, the goal is to persuade others to believe and think the same way you do. The way to lure them to your side is to find ways to make your argument stand out, and make them really think about why they felt the way they did, to begin with. Steven Pinker, a psychologist, and professor wrote an essay called, In Defense of Dangerous Ideas, where he argues that dangerous ideas are only considered to be dangerous to those who believe in the label society has given them. Pinker defines dangerous ideas as being, ideas that are denounced not because they are self evidently false, nor because they advocate harmful action, but because they are thought to corrode the prevailing moral order. Pinker uses this essay to attempt to effectively argue that dangerous ideas are only that if people allow them to control how what is said makes them feel. Pinker uses poor terminology, sarcastic tone, and poor ethos through lack of structure, making his argument ineffective. Ethos has a great impact on the argument due to when and how the author s language is used to make is points as strong as possible, and the author Pinker has an issue with this. His use of language, his diction, come off very aggressive. Pinker chooses the words he uses carefully throughout the essay to intentionally try to offend the audience. • 6. A Perfect Health Care System I feel as if we will never have a perfect health care system in place. No matter what we try, something will always need tweaked. We need to find a way that makes health care more affordable for everyone. With Obama care we had an option for everyone to get health insurance. Now what the government is trying to pass through will cause million of people to lose their health care. Also, Medicaid is going to be reduced by millions. So many poor, disabled, and old people will lose their insurance making it hard for them to get the help they need. Politicians make us think there is just a simple fix to our health care system, but it s much more complex then that. I don t believe there is just one simple fix to our health care. • 7. Personal Lessons Learned From an early age I was taught the importance of personal integrity and the importance of being adaptable and prepared for any stressful situation that life may throw at you. During my time as a boy scout I was constantly taught to be prepared and to also to always be at the service of others. At the end of our camping trips we would be told repeatedly to leave this place, better than when you found it and this lesson has translated into my own life. I want to make the world a better (safer) place than when I found it. As I grew up, these lessons continued to play a key role in the decisions I made and have made me into the man that I ve become today. While in middle school and into high school I had the opportunity to be exposed to many cultures that were different than my own. I volunteered weekly through my church in a predominately Hispanic community that was located in the Port of Houston. The neighborhood was extremely impoverished and many of the students were involved in gangs, or had one or more parents that were incarcerated. The more I worked with these young men and women, the more I learned about myself and that the lesson I learned years prior of making the world better than when you found it rang true. • 8. The Intent Behind the Enuma Elish (Creation Epic) Essay The Intent Behind the Enuma Elish The Enuma Elish, often known as The Creation Epic, is often considered the primary source of Mesopotamian cosmology. However, to view the Enuma Elish as a cosmological myth obscures the true intent of the epicís author. The cosmological elements of the Enuma Elish are secondary to the authorís effort to explain the supremacy of Marduk, to justify absolute oriental monarchy, and to defend Babylon as the axis mundi. The Enuma Elish was composed in Babylonin the early second millennium B.C.E. The decay of Sumerian civilization allowed the Old Babylonian Empire to become the cultural and political center of Mesopotamia. Babylon was governed by absolute and despotic kings capable of wielding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, the transfer of power to Babylon is illustrated by the subjugation of all gods to the rule of Marduk. After erecting a throne for Marduk, the gods proclaim, Thou art (the most) important of the great gods; Thy destiny is unequaled, thy command is (like that of) AnuÖTo thee we have given kingship over the totality of the whole universe ( Enuma Elish, 36). This statement reflects the reality of the times. During the writing of the Enuma Elish the Old Babylonian Empire weilded supreme power in Mesopotamia. Moreover, the recognition Mardukís absolute rule is etiological in relation to the power of the Babylonian kings. According to Assyriologist Benjamin Foster, the Enuma Elish explains the evolution from early government by elders to absolute monarchy. As the battle between Marduk and Tiamat illustrates, Foster notes the catalyst for this change is portrayed as outside threat calling for a war leader. The leader demanded, as his terms for leadership, absolute obedience, even when the threat of war was removed (Foster, 9). Once the writer of the Enuma Elish set forth the supremacy of the Babylonian God and the precedent for earthly monarchy, he/she turned to the task of translating divine superiority to earthly. The process of translating divine power to earthly power begins on line 50 of Tablet IV of the Enuma Elish. Grateful for Mardukís leadership, the gods construct the ... • 9. The Leader And The Follower Quote from Jerry Rice Today I will do what others won t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can t . Leadership is not a title; it is not a trade, or some sort of hierarchy. Positive leadership is really something more. For leadership to exist, the leader has to have influence to lead oneself, and to lead others. Leadership at its core is a process of influence, meaning the influence must be transactional. The leader must affect the follower by setting goals, and the follower must affect the leader by setting goals. As the leader and the follower come together in a common understanding, and with a common sense of purpose, only then can they begin to move together to accomplish a common goal. Self Assessment: Social motives, Leadership Style, Styles of Conflict, Leader Member Exchange. The definition of an achievement leader is for management to set challenging goals, assists in training, emphasize improvement, and expect the highest levels of performance. I personally believe an achievement leader is one who believes it is the best to get the job done right, by keeping their employees happy. Positive results from this are creativity in the workplace, departments working together as a team, motivation within the company, and a low retention rate. The negative results are too much responsibility for the employee, with no guidance from the leader. Including low performance skills and failure to do the task that are presented. The modern business environment requires ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Undoubtedly, the fundaments of the demand of a separate country were based on the religious identity and an intention to provide a secure haven for the Muslims from Hindu dominated India. However, Pakistan was not meant to be a theocratic state, in which the rulers of government are vested with the uncontrolled power of religion. Instead, the founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah not only wanted an independent state for Muslims, in which Islam had primary role affirmed by the apparatus of the state but also a place in which other faith groups could live with ... One of the core reasons of the separation of the Subcontinent was that, post colonial Indian state failed to offer reasonable options to its Muslims minority to sustain in India. Therefore, the problem of minority rights was the cutting edge of all the political debates revolving around the formation of Pakistan. While Jinnah s approach represented a state having equality for all and free from any kind of discrimination of religion, caste and creed, there was a demand from fundamentalist Islamic leaders for a strict Islamic mechanism to run the state affairs. Jinnah demanded a state for Muslims minority in India, where religious freedom offered to other faith groups could be observed as the matter of tolerance and acceptance on behalf of the Muslim majority. 2.3 Objective ... It is not easy to track down an accurate definition of its boundaries. Estimation of the global value of the industry present significant discrepancies. It can be agreed, however, that the Space industry generates important revenues: SIA estimates USD 322.7 billion of global revenues for the industry in 2014, while the Space Foundation estimates USD 330 billion. The space economy has presented a constant and sustained growth over the last 40 years. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In broad terms, the literature distinguishes between three different sectors: scientific, military, and commercial. The scientific sector aims to develop new academic and technological knowledge, providing other sectors the capabilities needed for their activities. Universities and research institutes are important scientific and technological actors. The military sector, on the other hand, provides the conditions required to secure national assets. Last but not least, the commercial sector aims to create richness and business growth out of the Space industry. It is of fundamental importance for the sustainability of the Space sector as a whole, as, differently from the scientific and military, is the only one specifically designed to be profitable. As the final objective is to provide an overview for the development of a sustainable Space strategy in South Australia, the commercial sector will be the crucial unit of analysis of the paper, but not the only one, as each sector is closely linked with the others, and has no chance to survive in isolation. SPACE INDUSTRY S VALUE CHAIN When asked about space activities, most people tend to think about big government and public funded projects such as the International Space Station (ISS), the Voyager program, which is now exploring the boundaries of our solar system, or the Mars Rover, which is studying Mars surface. As I plan to teach first and second graders in the elementary schools, I will include character education in my classroom by using four simple rules. Be honest, be caring, have respect and listen. Students, parents, faculty members and I will be expected to follow all of these simple rules upon entering my classroom. We will be honest and truthful in the things we share. We will care about others feelings, and make it a priority to have my classroom as a comfortable setting in which my students can learn. We will have respect for all of whom enter into the walls of my classroom. We will listen to the instruction given and follow it to its entirety and fullness. When we fail to maintain one of these rules or standards, we will simply try again. As I plan to apply these rules in every aspect, my goal is to become an effective teacher and create a better learning environment for my students. In essence, I will have a classroom in which other students and teachers will look to. I know that one way that I can apply these standards is by motivating my students in learning and in their lives. Students need to be involved and learning as much as they can. • 13. Criticism Of Praise Praise Praise is an action that parents, teachers, and adults overly use when they desire an action from students and children. Most of the time, adults say phrases such as Good Job or Fantastic to boost the moral of students or children. But praise doesn t always lead to positive growth of an individual in the long run. There is, however, a stronger alternative to praise that many 21st century Western societies haven t quite accepted. This is known as criticism. We see criticism everywhere in our daily lives; from the workplace, to sporting events and competitions, and even in schools across America. It s a lot stronger than praise because it provides students with a basis of comparison, and truth and honesty. Therefore, criticism has a better long term effect on feedback and growth and should be balanced with praise because it allows students to learn from previous mistakes or issues, forcing them to make a positive change about themselves that could potentially help in the future. There are many problems that appear with the use of general praise on its own. For one, praise feeds into the ego of a student, forcing them into a lazy mindset from the overflow of approval. Carol Dweck, a theorist of human motivation, believes that praising traits feed the belief that talent is fixed, which makes kids less willing to take on new challenges that might expose them as less naturally able (Kamenetz). • 15. Themes Of Feminism In Harriet The Spy It is often questioned whether tween literature is too mature for its targeted age group. With themes of murder, sexual abuse, neglect, and other forms of violence, both physical and psychological, there seems to be one topic that is slightly more prevalent when speaking about tween literature. Tween literature and culture is often marketed towards young girls and their parents, because of this, it becomes easy to talk about themes of feminism in tween literature. More specifically, due to the time period in which tween culture became mainstream, postfeminism is a topic that is often heavily discussed around tween literature. Both Gail Levine s novel, Ella Enchanted, as well as Louise Fitzhugh s novel Harriet the Spy, can both be analyzed using a postfeminist lense. By using a postfeminist lense in analyzing these books, the issues of postfeminism become apparent when addressing issues such as a false sense of choice for young girls, an idea that they must be ashamed for who they are and the views that they hold. It is further complicated when it becomes apparent that due to postfeminist ideology, women, and specifically young girls have lost the ability to articulate sexism when it affects them. Through these points of contention regarding postfeminism, it becomes aparent that society is not quite ready to hold postfeminist views, since there is still an imbalance of power that women face on a day to day basis. The focus is now shifted to individualism, emotions, and nature. (James 485)These themes provided new ideas and different means to interpret and understand the world in a whole new light. Reasoning was no longer the most important concept that guided society s way of looking at the world. During the Romantic Era, the individual became more important than in the past. According to J.M. Cohen, this era encouraged people to look at themselves not as fragments extending from heaven to the natural world but as inimitable entities eminent in their own authenticity. (Cohen, 7) This idea indicates that man is a distinct being entitled to explore and express his own feelings and thoughts. Simply put, examine the man as an individual and not as a unit. The Romantic Era was a period of that examined emotions and put them into words. Romantics abandoned the logical traditional Western World thought which believed that intelligence was the method used to understand the world. However, the Romantics opted to espouse imagination and feelings as a veritable approach to empathize the world. (James ,488) Lastly, the Romantic Era blended human emotions with nature. Lack of historical records makes some historians question the association between the First Emperor and the construction of the wall. What is certain, however, is that if the First Emperor gave the orders to build the Great Wall, it was not built as we know it today. The walls would have been made of stones or earth, depending on what was more readily available. The philosophies of the time included Confucianism and Legalism, as simplified by modern scholar Arthur Waley in his book, Three Ways of Thought in Ancient China. Confucianism was considered bad and impractical, based on the idea that it was ruler based and hind sighted. The Legalists were considered good and practical because the administrations they set up were run by qualified men, used agriculture to stimulate the economy, and created clear laws. In fact, the First Emperor ordered the burning of several Confucius texts part of the Five Classics including the Book of Poetry and the Book of Documents. This was knows as the Burning of the Books. The primary place a children is in is at home. Poverty has a significant impact on a child s social behavior these children that are raised in poor environments have a higher risk of behavior problems. Impoverished communities have a wide range of people living there not all the people in that neighborhood may have the same parenting styles or teach their child to behave. Children in impoverished neighborhoods can often play with other kids outdoors and since other children may not be raised to behave well they will bring that behavior in their homes and begin to use it. Potential behavior that can arise from other children who do not behave can lead to not respecting others, anger, and violence. The media has been linked to aggressive behavior in children. The outcome of media portrayal of violence can have lasting effects such as children can be begin to feel less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others. In my opinion, Never Cry Wolf placed humans in the role of intruders as far as nature is concerned. Mowat cites several instances where humans violate nature and represent a threat to its sanctity. Even though this threat is not reciprocated by nature, humans continue to infringe upon nature and then deny the consequences of their actions. Two prevalent examples of this occur: when Mowat accidentally wanders into the wolves den when the wolves are there, and again when he discovers a herd of deer that have been slaughtered by hunters. Childhood obesity is a medical condition that affects children and teenagers who contain excess body fat. This condition is very common today, having about 3 million cases per year ( Healthy Schools. ). A sign that a child is suffering from obesity is when their weight is well above the average for a child s height and age. Although obesity may run in a family, it does not determine whether a child will be obese or not ( Obesity in Children ). If a child who comes from a family of obesity, happens to become overweight like them, the likely cause is due to bad eating and activity habits. Many children today spend more time inside the house eating and watching television, rather than being active outdoors ( Obesity in Children ).
