What Is The Theme Of Survival In The Road By Cormac Mccarthy
The ability to paint beautiful ideas on a canvas of dark events and imagery is an essential skill in
the arsenal of an accomplished writer. In his novel The Road, Cormac McCarthy demonstrates his
understanding of this skill. A reviewer from the San Francisco Chronicle described The Road
saying, [McCarthy s] tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy s stature
as a living master. It s gripping, frightening, and, ultimately, beautiful. These descriptions of the tale
are true throughout the novel, but particularly at the ending of the story. In the final pages of the
book, McCarthy continues to engage the reader with gripping and frightening moments, to
emphasize the theme of survival, and to reveal beauty and the miracle of goodness.
Throughout the novel, survival is a constant objective for the boy and his father. McCarthy s
gripping and frightening moments are most obviously interwoven with this theme. Soon after the
death of his father the boy looks up and sees that someone was coming. He started to turn and go
back into the woods but he didnt. He just stood in the road and waited, the pistol in his hand
(McCarthy 281). With the approach of this new potential threat, the boy s safety and survival are
brought into question. As the strange man comes near, a tension builds while the boy tries to make
a decision that could quite possibly affect the rest of his life. The tension dissipates when it is
revealed that the man is not a threat, but a

Accounting Minefields Essay
Tread Lightly through These Accounting Minefields
Tremendous pressure is placed upon accountants and executives to provide favorable financial
conditions of their organization (Sherman Young, 2001). As such, accounting practices are
continually a source of question and concern for many organizations in reporting profits and
corporate financial information to shareholders, stock markets, and government filings. Hence, the
role of the ethical accountant and executives becomes crucial to the continued success and
operation of the organization. Consequently, pitfalls or minefields of questionable accounting
practices must be avoided.
Said pitfalls include revenue measurement and recognition, provisions for uncertain future costs,
asset valuation, derivatives, related party transactions, and information utilized in bench marking
performance (Sherman Young, 2001). While impossible to fully eradicate the occurrence of
questionable, unethical or illegal accounting practices regarding accounting minefields,
organizations must implement procedures, controls, and culture to minimize the potential of such
practices occurring within their establishments.
Revenue Measurement and Recognition Revenue is an increase in a business equity resulting from
the sale of products or services (Warren, Reeve Duchac, 2012). As such, organizations should
recognize revenue upon the completion of transactions resulting in the earning of said revenue
allowing for its recognition within

The Story Of My Life
Mom, Leya s gonna be over any second to pick me up for school. I figured I d go ahead and tell you
bye since you don t look like you re coming down anytime soon. I plucked a sloppy kiss on her
cheek as she gave me an awkward half hug while shuffling through some more papers on her desk
in a nonplussed manner.
Sorry, Babe. Have a good day at school. Oh, before you leave! I dreadfully turned back to face her
in the doorway, aware that I now had her full attention for a reason I could tell that I wasn t going
to like. This Charlie kid... he seems pleasant enough. Are you two... more than just friends, by
chance?
UM, MOM! I placed a hand to my temple exasperatedly. We re just psych partners. No need to

If you re more than that, does that mean I get to come into your room?! he called from behind me

This caused me to snap my head back with my mouth completely agape as I took in the same
stupid smile on his face. How dare you?! Just... wait out here! UGH! He had me flustered, and
he knew it; I could tell by the cackle that next rose from the depths of his throat. I proceeded to
change into the only clean clothes I appeared to have left: an off the shoulder, mid sleeve cream
blouse that Eric s ex girlfriend had gotten me for my birthday (it was one of his longest
relationships, and she was one committed gal) and a pair of blue jean shorts that Leya had left at
my place. It was just my luck that I had to wear the most uncomfortable thing I owned the day
Charlie unexpectedly decided to show up.
Mal? That you? Is something the matter? my mother called from the farthest reaches of her study.
Nothing, Ma! Just forgot my textbook! I yelled back.
All right! Be careful next time! We can t afford anything that s going to hinder you from getting a

Course, Mom! I then slipped quietly out the door and cleaned up the yogurt with the paper towels I

The influence of grass roots marketing to build brand loyalty is down played as a strategy to reach
consumers effectively. Shifts in culture have proved that response to mass media marketing is
declining and there are other alternatives to build your brand. Lifestyle clothing companies have
started to implement strategies to reach youth consumer markets in a personalized way. Through
the use of grass roots consumer marketing brands can capitalize on the growing field of youth
consumers to build brand loyalty and create returning customers for life. By investigating the

Project Delivery Process For Solid Waste Management Essay
CLIP (Collaboration/Conflict, Legitimacy, Influence, Power) is both a powerful tool and a
process for providing insights into the stakeholders of a project. It is especially useful for more
complex projects, with a large and diverse range of stakeholders
Defining stakeholders in solid waste management
We have found evidence that all of the groups described below are important in the project delivery
process for solid waste management services. Stakeholders will not always fall into the above
categories. In particular, whether a group is classified as secondary or external clearly depends on
the specific project objectives.
Background
Solid waste management involves the storage, collection, transport and disposal of waste which is
generated in the home, commercial premises and institutions.
Good solid waste management is an important component of a strategy for improving
environmental health. In addition to the obvious aesthetic importance of a garbage free living
environment, uncollected solid waste rapidly putrefies in tropical climates, creating noxious smells,
giving rise to polluting leachates, providing breeding areas for countless flies and, in the wet
season, mosquitoes. A particularly important indirect effect is the blocking of drains, which causes
local flooding with its associated environmental health risks and economic disbenefits.
Understanding how solid waste management works
Whose responsibility is it? Municipal corporations and councils are charged with

Plot Summary Of The Movie The Castle
Introduction: The Castle, directed by Robert Sitch and produced in 1997, is arguably one of the
greatest Australian movies ever created. It is a peculiar, boorish and above all, humorous film, that
is loved by most Australians. With great use of trademark Aussie humour, amateur camera work
and Australian stereotyping, the movie can be very relatable to Australian viewers, typically those
of the blue collar working class level. Even with light hearted humour that could be taken
offensively, and seen as a dig at Australian culture, in my opinion, the Castle portrays the typical
Australian working class family and has an underlying message of being resilient and never giving
up! Plot Summary: Set in Melbourne, The Castle is a movie... Show more content on

the role of the father in the Kerrigan family fantastically, contributing to the high degree the film s
success. His role incorporates the appearance, behaviors, and traits, that most Aussies can relate to.
Darryl is the illustrious face of the Kerrigan family in the movie, possessing the usual Australian
attributes of being devoted, diligent and very family orientated. M.C s character is acted out

Pros And Cons Of Performance Enhancing Drugs
Performance Enhancing Drugs Should Be Banned In today s society sports are extremely popular
and followed by a countless number of fans. The level of competition has risen with the followers
making many sports more aggressive. As a result athletes have taken to the use of performance
enhancing drugs. The effect of these drugs have exponentially blown up the level of competition in
sports. Some might say these drugs increase the performance quality of sports. Essentially making
the sport more fun to watch because the playing field skill is at an extremely high competition
level. However, performance enhancing drugs can pose huge health risk to athletes at the
professional and recreational level, and professional athletes can influence children or other adults
alike into thinking it is okay to use these drugs. Furthermore performance enhancing drugs can be
deadly no matter your age. Performance enhancing drugs are substances, chemicals, or procedures
that are used to provide the user with an athletic advantage. Performance enhancing drugs have
been known to be deadly and are blamed for the early death of some very influential athletes. For
example in Performance Enhancing Drugs, Keith Burgess Jackson with a J.D. and PhD in
biography states In general, I m not a paternalist, but some of these drugs are dangerous. Ken

Guilt And Appreciation In Those Winter Sundays By Robert...
Something so simple as thanking someone for holding the door open or smiling at passerby s
can make a big difference in someone s day. So, it is even more important to treat loved ones
with respect and to show them appreciation, as it means much more than a simple smile from a
stranger. Guilt is a very difficult thing to live with. It is better to be courteous of others and
thoughtful than to deal with the dreadful guilt. The themes of guilt and appreciation are shown in
the poem, Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden. To appreciate and respect a loved one shows
them how truly special they are, and lets them know that they are noticed and their actions are not
taken for granted. Everyone deserves to know that they are loved and appreciated.

Comparison Of Kuhn And Popper s Understanding Of Science
In this section we will compare and contrast Kuhn s understanding of science with Popper s
understanding of science. These two methods are narrower when it comes to levels of scrutiny.
They are also more open and willing to embrace change because they seek to change the status quo
which is traditional science. Both scientists agree that the traditional method of science is too
broad and ignores many different variables that could change the outcome of the results. They
also concur on the idea that a subjective approach to science and reason is more suitable to reach
a correct answer rather than shooting wildly in all directions and accepting the bullet that is
closest to our target. Kuhn and Popper looked at traditional science as a method based on
assumptions and estimates rather than exact truths or data. They do differ however in some ways.
Kuhn does not believe that falsifying theories is necessary to ascertain the truth like Popper does.
He simply believes that society is rapidly changing and therefore the methods of science must
change also. Popper does not necessarily concern himself with sociological opinions or status quos.
He focuses more on the procedures of traditional methods and works to disprove theories. Karl
Popperwas an Austrian British philosopher as well as a professor of science. He grew up in a
wealthy family and surrounded himself with education and knowledge. He attended various
lectures and soon found himself accepting the socialist ideas of Karl

Cuneiform Vs Hieroglyphics
Cuneiform and hieroglyphics were both writing systems that emerged at the dawn of humanity, but
their legacy and impact were vastly different. The two systems not only demonstrate the early
concept of writing but show contrasting elements of civilization in globalism vs nationalism,
internal vs external, connection vs isolation. The two systems certainly diverged from one another,
but to understand this, the origins of the two writingsystems must be examined. Around the dawn of
civilization, in the last half of the third millennium, abstract symbols (meaning letters, numbers, and
other things that represent abstract thought) started to form from proto writing that had been
present for millennia in the Nile valley before the first abstract... Show more content on

But it is undeniable that hieroglyphics had more influence on history than cuneiform did, in spite of
the fact that cuneiform was more advanced for its time. This is the first way that these systems
contrast; sophistication. Cuneiform was a more advanced system than hieroglyphics simply
because cuneiform was more abstract and it was far quicker to write Sumerian with it.
Hieroglyphics was, for much of its existence, a logographic system, making it in some ways closer
to drawing than to abstract writing such as cuneiform. However, in the Neolithic times,
sophistication had an inverse relationship with influence, that is to say, that less advanced writing
systems had more influence and clout with other cultures. This may have been because it is hard to
teach an illiterate culture who may adopt a writing system, a complex, writing scheme, or a system
that doesn t work in their language. Or, it may because the more advanced a writing system is, the
fewer people in your culture understand how to use it. This can be seen with cuneiform and
hieroglyphics in a very stark way. Not many cultures used cuneiform, and when they did it worked
poorly with the language it was being used in, while hieroglyphs informed many other writing
systems, such as Hebrew, Greek, and Phoenician; it cannot be understated the

The Power Of A Group
The power of a group is immense. Although composed of individuals, a group functions as a
separate entity, and it bears the capability to heavily influence the thoughts and actions of its
members. This manipulation can alter the perception of the entire group and, as a result, lead to a
psychological phenomenon known as groupthink . Research psychologist, Irving Janis, defined
groupthink as . . . a deterioration in mental efficiency, reality testing and moral judgments as a result
of group pressures (84). Janis further categorized groupthink into eight symptoms, spanning three
types; overestimation of the group, close mindedness, and pressure toward uniformity (Rose 38).

Although there was a clear disregard for the well being of others, members of the group had the
thought of justice instilled within them. And so, violence, arson, and stealing may have been
viewed as mainly positive, because it was done in the name of Gray. However, Gray s mother did
not see it that way, saying I want y all to get justice for my son, but don t do it like this here (Yan
and Ford). For protesters, Gray s death was seen as worthy of such an extreme response.
Type two, close mindedness, mainly sees a group disregarding outside opinions. In August of 2016,
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel staff reported riots breaking out in Milwaukee after officers shot and
killed armed suspect Syville Smith (Glauber et al.). With the exception of serious harm toward
officers, events occurred similar to that of the Baltimore riots. The factor that distinguished the two
was the protester s stereotyping of out groups . Which is described as a refusal to reason with out
groups due to stereotypes (Janis 86). Intern for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Asian American,
Aaron Mak experienced this directly. He along with another white photojournalist were reporting
on scene, when they needed to hide behind a vehicle to avoid violence. Protesters had spotted the
photographer, and Mak heard Get your white ass out of here! and You better not

Christian Inaccuracies In The Bible
Introduction
Every day people are introduced to the Bible, whether it be through Christians or non
Christians. Christians will try to convince people that the Bible is true, while non Christians will
say that there are too many inaccuracies in the Bible for it to be true. As Christians, we should
take a look at what the other side has to say, so we are aware of what others believe and so that
we can accurately talk about the other side s claims. Another reason that Christians should
conduct their own research on the accuracy is so they can defend their faith and know why they
believe what they believe. There are many people in our would today that believe certain facts

This account was an early example that shows us that even before Jesus came, God the

Eric Knorr, select, rank and compare your top five trends. Discuss the reasons for your ranking?
The below listed topics are ranked and compared accordingly to the argument of innovation and
global need. The given reasons generate reasonable understanding of the trends and their
importance in enterprise systems: 1.The triumph of the public cloud I ranked this trend first
because I believe it is one of the most advanced and talked about topic in tech world in present
year. This controversial topic is creating buzz all over the world. With advancement of
technology, various tech companies have increased their effort to provide a free cloud storage
system. Eric Knorr also listed this topic as a number one tech trend in his list. I believe this topic
itself is one of the major challenges for public and private companies in term to provide certain
product which not only is hard to maintain as well as complex and costly to generate. IT
Companies can shift their fundamental competitive landscape by fabricating a new platform
which will help to create and deliver values businesses have to its stakeholders (IBM, 2012). The
cloud based storage can be used by companies to generate Enterprise data which can be used as
various decision making and evaluation tools. (Stair and Reynolds, n.d.) 2.Liquid Computing: Eric

voice echo in the garage, she explained what I was listening to. It was her recorded suicide note

Management Functions Within The Operations Management Essay
Sustaining Operations
When a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Japan, no one would think any business in its
path could survive such a tragedy. Nissan was able to survive the devastating effects of this natural
disaster by having a plan to sustain operations. In order to sustain operations, it is essential to
explore the use of process management functions within the operations management (OM)
processes. Nissan was impacted by the earthquake, but fortunately they were able to explore the use
of process management and incorporate them into operations management (OM) functions. Nissan
has been able to use key advantages from three different operation theories: Just in Time (JIT),
Toyota Production System (TPS), and Lean Production as well as integrate concepts such as triple
bottom line, ISO 14000 standards, and incorporate corporate responsibility principles to maintain
sustainability into their operations.
Nissan has incorporated theories such as Just in Time (JIT), Toyota Production Systems (TPS), and
Lean production into their OM functions. JIT is a process that focuses on supply chain
management to reduce carrying costs by having supply provided and output produced exactly when
they are needed (Linton, 2016). JIT emphasizes forced problem solving, which is one JIT s biggest
advantages. This allows Nissan to focus on the problems, ultimately reducing inventory and cutting
variability and waste. Nissan implemented JIT prior to the earthquake catastrophe,

but for the first time the question of how well one performed and their role became significant.
Conversely, Weber does not consider that belief in a calling is adequate to explain the spirit of
capitalism. With this in mind, a calling can adhere to traditionalism since it implies that an
individual should assume their position in society without further motiviation to become more.

Normative Context Of Advice
In Goldsmith and Fitch s 1997 article The Normative Context of Advice as Social Support the
dilemmas associated with giving, seeking, and taking advice are examined. The overarching goal
of this study is to analyze what the normative actions of support, specifically advice, are. The
research questions that were taken into consideration are as follows: what goals are pursued as
people ask for, and give, advice; what identity and relational implications of advice shape givers and
receivers reactions to advice; and what situational, conversational, and cultural constraints are
relevant to participants evaluation of advice? (Goldsmith Fitch, 1997) Multiple dilemmas were
found pertaining to advice including honesty versus support, caring vesrsus intrusive, and respect
versus autonomy. Each of these qualities are present in every interaction in which advice is given,
asked for, or received. As for the first pair of qualities, honesty and support, it manifests itself in the
situation. How the advice is taken is dependent on the present circumstances, rather than on
relational context. For example, if someone were to ask to be brutally honest, this does not
constitute perpetual honesty; instead, it allows a temporary period during which being... Show more

Comparing Voice In Poetry And Psalms 6
Voice is a main force that drives along a piece of literature, it adapts to new paths and takes on new
meanings based on the speaker, addressee, context, and many other factors. In If You Want to Sing
from Islamic Mystical Poetry and Psalms 6, through similar basic structures, both writings deploy
voice in order to describe suffering and affirmation of each respective speaker s position. However,
through this fundamental parallel, the differences in the particularities of the voices employed are
further highlighted. The similarity in the general voice and structure allow for higher scrutiny of
the individual texts, accentuating the particular differences in emotionality and clarity that the
respective voices carry. Though seemingly different on first look, the two writings follow a similar
pattern and basic plot. In both, there is an encouragement... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In terms of voice, generally, both deploy a very declarative voice, announcing their struggles and
sufferings. Towards the end, however, both move to a more affirmative voice that sustain their
stable positions in triumphing against their enemies. Through this similar scheme and movement
though different voices, a greater window is created to inspect more meticulously at the detailed
differences between the two works in terms of voice. Although they both do deploy a declarative
voice in the beginning, there are nuances that give the writings a different meaning and light.
Specifically, Psalms 6 brings more emotionality to the way suffering is described. For example,
Psalms 6 spends verse two, three, six, and seven just describing in detail how much anguish is felt.
In verse six, crying is illustrated through two different ways, flooding the bed and drenching the
couch, which constructs a tangible picture in the readers minds. However, this may be due to the
fact that there are simply more details and quantity of the text for the suffering as compared

Abstract: Nowadays, using robots instead of humans in risk operations is an interesting point in
the field of robotics. In this paper we introduce an integrated approach for search and rescue
operation of detecting gas sources in large areas; e.g. houses, factories, and labs. This aims at
saving people s lives at bottlenecks resulting from gas leak and ignition of fires. Experiment is
performed using master Khepera robot supplied with gas sensor circuit to search map, in addition
to two slave Khepera supplied with gripper to take the best path to clinch the victim.
Moreover, this paper proposes an improvement of Albers exploration algorithm to reduce the time
required to explore unknown map with different polygon obstacles. The proposed approach aims to
minimizing the overall exploration time, making it possible to localize fire sources in an efficient
way, as demonstrated in
Vrep simulation as well as real world experiments with Khepera III robot. A comparison among
different algorithms has showed the effectiveness of the proposed one where the percentage of
performance speedup is about 30% to 57% depending on size of the map and number of obstacles.

The Problem Of A Firm Needs Improvement
There are many ways to determine if a firm needs improvement in control. Some things to look
for are a waste of resources and excessive costs. In addition, if too many errors or defects in the
productivity are noticed, this can be a sign of needing improvement. If changes are made and there
is an inability to adapt to these changes you might need improvement. Finally, the lack of
managerial capability in complex and difficult situations. There are different ways to tell which
type of control needs improvement. First, managers should look at the operations control. This can
be used to help improve the transformation process by providing extra training to reduce defects
and errors. Second, the financial control is the best one to use for... Show more content on

Decentralized control attempts to safeguard employee commitment to organizational objectives by
the use of group norms and culture, a flat structure, and a high level of input from lower level
workers. Decentralized control is focused on attaining superior performance above the satisfactory
minimum and centers on group performance. While bureaucratic control is speedier and simpler to
cultivate and offers straightforward direction to managers, it can be inflexible, it does not reward
excellence, and workers may be discouraged by too many rules and the deficiency of involvement.
Decentralized control allows for opportunities of contribution, recompenses superiority and
creativeness, and welcomes collaboration. Yet, decentralized control can be vague and costly, and
can take a great deal of time to cultivate. A large reason that individuals resist control is due to over
control, or the attempt by the organization to regulate too many things. People also tend to struggle
when the concentration of control is unfitting or when they dread too much accountability. There
are numerous methods managers can use to minimize opposition to change. If a good control
system and accurate controls are implemented from the beginning, employees are less likely to
resist the system. Individuals are more likely to adhere to controls if they are contributors to their

Factors Affecting The Homeless Epidemic Essay
4. Different There are a lot of factors that construe the homeless epidemic. Factors the contribute
to homelessness includes job loss, divorce, domestic abuse, foreclosure of home, serious illness,
mental and physical illness, substance abuse and even natural disasters all help to contribute to
homelessness. Which shows it can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion and
even social class. Even with government regulations, there can occur a loss of financial
sustainability by zoning regulations resulting in eminent domain over people s properties when
they have no place to go and with the high cost of housing either for purchase or to rent have
skyrocketed. These people really do not have a choice but to be homeless and at the bottom of the
caste system deemed the untouchables . The homeless have become the hunters and gatherers of
modern society. They feed themselves by begging, scavenging, and raiding garbage for
(particularly that of restaurants) food. (Kottak p234) Even when factories relocate to other
countries where labor is cheaper, cost families, their livelihood and for some that is the only job
skill they have, these people would eventually become homeless if they cannot secure another job
with the same or lower job skills that they possess. And also due to the fact that the migrants are
being housed first and been providing care over U.S. citizens with this current administration. The
Obama Administration has made it very clear that

The Importance Of Fingerprinting And Blood Testing
Fingerprinting and Blood testing are essential methods of identification to prove if a defendant
committed a crime or if there is a relationship between victim and defendant. Information of this
nature is critical to criminal proceedings; however, there is no testimony being taken; therefore,
counseling is not needed because a defendant cannot refuse such testing on the grounds of the Fifth
Amendment. Fingerprint identificationevidence is equated with guilt, while the lack of fingerprint
identification evidence infers a weakness in the prosecution s case (Lawson, 2013). Fingerprint
identification is one of the most important criminal investigation tools due to two features: their
persistence and their uniqueness. A person s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
DNA analysis permits the identification by reference to the information contained in any human
nucleic cell; considering, which body part the cell came from; therefore, DNA evidence helps
articulate the procedure for use in a criminal investigation. (Gans Urbas, 2002) Crime
investigators utilize DNA profiles from two sources: human bodies and small samples of
human bodily material (Gans Urbas, 2002). DNA is an effective weapon for both prosecutors
and defendants; therefore, the DNA crime investigators need to compare a profile believed to
be from a crime perpetrator with a known person s profile. (Gans Urbas, 2002) DNA
conclusively establishes identity using such specimens like hair, blood, tissue, and semen from
suspect to determine guilt or innocence. (Hall, 2014) DNA evidence is most commonly used in
sexual assault and murder cases; it s not perfect; nevertheless, it s sufficiently reliable for
admission into evidence. DNA testing is used to compare a profile from an unidentified person
or corpse with a known person s profile. All fifty states are authorized to collect DNA from
individuals convicted of terrorism, violent, sexual, and some property crimes and these samples
are entered in CODIS. (Hall, 2014) Law enforcement agencies use DNA fingerprints to place a
name to file the charge and obtain an arrest warrant

Lao Tzu Oligarchies
Throughout the time of recorded history, humans have had the natural desire for protection and
order. That desire is where government comes in. There have been many forms of government
throughout history, according to Aristotle, there have only been two types, oligarchies and
democracies. Aristotle goes on to say that there are variations of these governments; for example,
an aristocracy is considered to be an oligarchy where the wealthy land owners make the decisions in
government. Later in that same paragraph, he states that a republic is a form of democracy; these are
not the only variations of democracies and oligarchies as there are many variations of these two
types of government along the spectrum (Aristotle 3). Societies all through history have one thing
in common, they all had some form of government; This raises the question though, what is the
difference between a good and bad government? Lao Tzu has an insight on the differences
between a good and bad government in his philosophical writing, Thoughts from the Tao te
Ching, where he states that a good government shall not make their people want, they should
provide everything that their people need. He also states that wars cause chaos and a good
leader would not wage war and sacrifice his or her people and be moral in their decisions (Tzu
19). In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson lists his grievances against King
George III. The first of these grievances is that King George refused to

What can be stated as a welcome relief for the educated traveler might pose real challenges for
the hotel business. To better understand the scenario, it should be noted that hotels are presently
facing severe shortages in occupancy rates which are at their lowest since 1971. Such a crisis and
lack of funds can definitely hamper any efforts to install appliances that comply with the LEEDS
standards (Leadership in Energy Environmental Design). Some experts agree that a trade off may
lead hotels into removing free amenities that include little bottles of shampoos, jams and free
basket of fruits; all of which are the hallmark of these eco lodgings.
Where are the Workers gone?
The hotel industry gives employment at a very large proportion of part time workers, who after
gaining substantial experience, leave for other lucrative jobs at restaurants and outdoors. Low
wages in the hotel industry is one of the primary reasons for low retention rates.
Hotel industry Gurus are already thinking of ways to attract and retain qualified workers by
increasing the pay scales and by reducing the long working hours. The top management is now
devising constructive methods that will retain the existing workers by sponsoring education and

Socialist Party Research Paper
It would be safe to say that in a perfect world, Utopian Communities would be ideal. The Socialist
Party was fueled by the idea of Utopian Communities, in which communities possessed highly
desirable or perfect qualities. Is this a realistic concept? Most would say no; it is impossible to
create a perfect society, where there are no problems, as human nature does not allow this. People
would try to construct utopies on earth via ideologies such as communism. Communism, as we
know, is a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in
which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities
and needs.
The Socialist Party would form strong alliances with a number of labor organizations, because of
their similar goals. In an attempt to rebel against the abuses of corporation workers, they believed

Persuasive Essay On Older Adults
In today s society, the older adults are often left behind and forgotten about. Society is often less
concerned about this population when they should be more concerned. As discussed above, as
some transition into later life, it is almost like they are entering a new world that they must
readjust to. They have to get comfortable in their new living environment, sometimes without their
spouse and with fewer friends and family members around. As a society, if we don t start
monitoring this population, the high rates will continue to rise and more older adults will
continue to self harm which will lead to a huge social justice matter. In order to advocate for this
population, we must first educate those who are not aware. I think it would be beneficial to start
small programs or fairs throughout different communities where families can be educated on
exactly what to look for and how they can care more for their older adultfamily members. In order
to make this possible, resources are need. Educators, physicians and social workers can all come
together to provide the necessary curriculum to those being educated. Certain policies should also
be in place that will prevent the misuse of prescription drugs. Instead of quickly responding to
chronic painwith medicine, maybe other things should be in place such as physical therapy or
natural herbs, to help those individuals work through their pain. As older adults visit health care
more often, physicians should take time for screening

The Catcher in the Rye is narrated by Holden Caulfield, a 16 year old boy who has just flunked
out of his third private boarding school. Unwilling to remain at school until the end of the term,
Holden runs away to New York City. He does not contact his parents, who live there, but instead
drifts around the city for two days. The bulk of the novel is an account, at once hilariously funny
and tragically moving, of Holden s adventures in Manhattan. These include disillusioning
encounters with two nuns, a suave ex schoolmate, a prostitute named Sunny, and a sympathetic
former teacher who may be homosexual. Finally, drawn by his affection for his ten year old sister,
Phoebe, Holden abandons his spree and returns home.
Salinger s depiction of Holden Caulfield is considered one of the most convincing portrayals of an
adolescent in literature. Intelligent, sensitive, and imaginative, Holden desires acceptance into the
adult world even though he is sickened and obsessed by what he regards as its quot;phonies, quot;
including his teachers, parents, and his older

The Future of Fiber Optics
I. What is Fiber Optics? Fiber optic technology is often discussed in a wide range of
conversations. This may be when people talk about TVs, phones, internet, or general technology.
Fiber optics may also be referred to when talking about light and optics. An optical fiber is defined
as a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly
thicker than that of human hair (Wikipedia). These fibers are used as a means of light
transmission from one end of the fiber to the other end of the fiber and this is referred to as fiber
optic communications. These fibers are quite technologically advanced because they have the
ability to transmit more data and at a quicker rate than normal cables made of wire. There is also
much less lost data when using fiber optic technology. Clearly, the benefits of fiber optics are
much greater than traditional wired cables. Fiber optic cables are also used for the purpose of
lighting and sensing. There are already many practical applications of the technology such as lasers,
but these applications are just the beginning of the potential of this powerful technology.
II. How was Fiber Optics Discovered? Fiber optics as we know it today has been the result of a
long chain of inventions that all began with John Tyndall s 1854 discover that light can be
conducted through water and bent. Later in 1895, a

An Analysis Of Porter s Value Chain
The value chain shows the internal steps a company or organization takes to transform inputs into
outputs (Jurevicius, 2013). As the products pass through each stage or activity, value is added until
they ultimately are ready to reach the consumer. Value chain analysis a process where a firm
identifies its primary and support activities that add value to its final product and then analyze these
activities to reduce costs or increase differentiation (Jurevicius, 2013). The use of value chain

The next primary activity is operations. This is the step where the raw materials are converted into
their output, or final product (Bhasin, 2017). Next, is outbound logistics, which is where the final
product is where the finished goods are sent from the manufacturer to the retailer, or distribution
center for sale (Bhasin, 2017). The next step is marketing and sales, where the company applies
different marketing strategies to attempt to increase sales. The amount of profit the company
obtains relies solely on sale of products and services, therefore making this step vital for company
success (Bhasin, 2017). Value can be added here if the marketing of the product, and company,
are done properly. Proper marketing that is done is such a way that enhances the brand name and
equity, as well as does not make false promises to the consumer (Bhasin, 2017). With these in

Importance Of Self-Regulation In Children
Developing Self Regulation in Children: Techniques, Tools, and Parenting Styles Self regulation is
sometimes difficult to practice, even adults lose control of their emotions or behavior. Self
regulation is useful in different types of events whether a person is trying to change their lifestyle
or trying to finish a paper but learning how to practice self control should start very early on before
being faced with these types of events. By learning and using the process model of self control a
person can effectively prevent undesirable actions and manipulate and minimize the struggle of
controlling a their impulse (Duckworth, Gendler, Gross, 2016). Learning is half of the fight the
other half sometimes is more important: when something like self regulation is learned. Infants,
toddlers, and young children all have many things in common this includes: brain plasticity,
emotional unpredictability, and tantrums (Flook et al., 2015). It is common for young children to
face a world that is teaching them new ideas, emotions, and objects. Sometimes they are able to
cope with new concepts and sometimes they do not know how handle certain situations. It is
important for these developing brains to also be taught the importance of self regulation and

Re Astor s Settlement Case Summary
The essence of a trust lies in the principle that a settlor appoints a trustee, who then holds onto a
property for a beneficiary. The trustee has power of the property but also duties to perform as a
part of their role. The beneficiary is the ultimate owner and has all the associated rights to the
property. The beneficiary principle states that in every non charitable trust there must be
ascertainable beneficiaries. This means that there must be an actual human to which the court can
decide in favour of. This rests on two propositions, firstly, a trust that cannot be enforced must
fail. This view is widely accepted. The second view is that only beneficiaries can enforce trusts and
this view is less accepted, as it is believed that beneficiaries... Show more content on

The rule is that one must be able to determine that before the end of the perpetuity period, that the
trust will definitely come to an end. The perpetuity period defined as the age of the life in
question, plus 21 years. However, the problem with private purpose trusts is that they often don t
have an ascertainable beneficiary, and so where this is the case, the court will define it as the
twenty one years. The perpetuity principle can be problematic in that where there is no named
beneficiary, or where the trust is for the purpose of maintaining monuments as in the case of Re
Hooper. However, in Re Hooper, the settlor had stated that the trustees were to carry out the
purpose as far as was legally possible and this was found to be saving words, meaning that the trust
was upheld and in line with the perpetuity principle. However, in the absence of such saving words,
all trusts will fail. In Musset.v.Bingle there was no perpetuity period stated for the upkeep of the
monument and it failed on that part, but was upheld on the actual erection of the monument, as it
was assumed that the monument would be completed within 21

Concentration Of Zinc And Sodium Lab Report
Discussion: As figure 1 shown, ammonium sulphate have different concentrations from 0.1mol in
200ml water to 0.4mol. When concentration is increasing, the average change is from 0.26g 0.1g.
Also Ammonium Dihydrogen Phosphate have the same inverse relationship that when the
concentration is increasing, the weight of change decreases from 0.5 0.06g as shown in figure.... In
addition, the higher the concentration, the more effective the flame retardant is. Both ammonium
sulphate and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate are Inorganic salts. Such as K2CO3 or MgCl2 that
are inorganic salts can suppress flaming combustion of cotton textile. As a flame retardant, it lowers
the combustion temperature of the material, decreases maximum weight loss rates, and

Influence Of British Imperialism On South African Society
The British Empire has left everlasting legacies in many nations across all seven of the world s
continents. As a matter of fact, one of the countries colonized by the British Empire in the historical
globalization era was South Africa. This nation is well known for its historical sites, beautiful
beaches, and its modern landscape. Furthermore,Can it be believed that this nation was once in the
hands of Britain?, tThere is a great amount of British influence in this African nation. So the
question arises for us to think, to what extent has the British Colonization of South Africabenefited
the present South African society. During the early 1800 s Britain was suffering from severe
unemployment, and thus in 1820, Lord Somerset sent a handful... Show more content on

Britain s motive to expand the growth and development of South Africa had a positive influence
on South Africa s economy and on the whole nation. As a matter of fact, the British discoveries
of diamonds and other natural minerals and resources in South Africa has played a huge factor in
transforming the nation into an advanced economy. Some of these discoveries include highly
precious diamonds and gold. In fact, the most extreme transformations in South Africa s economy
occurred between 1870 and 1902. As a result of these transformations, the nation was on the
verge of urbanization and industrialization as it began to emerge as an international trader of it s
valuable minerals. One of the industries responsible for inaugurating the transformation of the
South African economy is the diamond industry. This industry commenced operations when
thousands of British citizens moved to South Africa in order to seek their fortune in the 1860s.
This incentive resulted in rapid industrialization as they started diamond diggings in the British
colony of South Africa due to the high probability of striking diamonds. This eventually led to
the mining industry since the mining capitalists purchased the diggers as a joint stock. The gold
industry, started in 1886 and by 1899, it had produced about three tenths of the world s gold and
had investments worth more than 100 million US as gold was used for the world s currencies
and was thus had a very big need for it everywhere. It also had a workforce greater than 100
thousand people thus creating employment for the society. Apart from the diamond mining and
gold, the British who were farmers by profession played a big part in the agricultural industry of
South Africa greatly as they planted rye, barley, and maize. The British traders played a significant
role in growing the business sector of South Africa which

Benefits And Side Effects Of Lithium
disorder is treated, each method working for some, but not for others; each method also has its
benefits and side effects. Doctors tried for years to find the treatment for this disorder, but were
unsuccessful until the discovery of Lithium. Prior to the discovery of Lithium, people with
disorders did not have a way to deal with their disease because earlier forms of treatment, such as
psychotherapy, ECT, and antidepressant did not work and sometimes the drugs even triggered an
episode. Lithium was a known substance found in simple mineral salts, but it was not until 1949
when John cade was doing an experiment on rats that he found how useful lithium was in calming
the effects the disorder (Comer 2013). The use of Lithium was approved by the FDA in 1970 and
was shown to improve the symptoms of more than 60% of manic patients and also help prevent the
symptoms from ever developing. The amount of lithium dosage given to patients is a critical
process because too little of the medicine can have little effect, but too much can result in lithium
intoxication which can lead to nausea, vomiting, sluggishness, tremors, dizziness, kidney
dysfunction and can possible result in death. Patients should also have their doctors check the
lithium level in their blood to avoid intoxication. Despite the effectiveness of this drug, it has some
side effects. Lithium can cause dry mouth, restlessness, bloating or ingestion and many more
changes in the body (National Institution of Mental

Theme Of Mental Asylum In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
How Realistic the Mental Hospital Was In One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest Ken Kesey s novel
One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest depicts a story of a sane man, Randle McMurphy, who decides
to escape imprisonment by entering a psychiatric ward instead. The entire story is viewed in the
eyes of a schizophrenic patient, Chief Bromden. This novel is set around the 1950 s in a mental
asylum in Oregon. Besides the plot of the story, Kesey also manages to illustrate a realistic 1950
s mental hospital. The facilities, therapy and the release of patients in mental asylum in One Flew
Over the Cuckoo s Nest by Ken Kesey realistically depicts the conditions of mental hospitals
during the 1950 s. The facilities provided to the patients in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s... Show

In the novel, they separated the patients in the ward into two groups, the Acutes and the Chronics.
The Acutes were those that can get cured and eventually leave, while the Chronics are in for good
(Kesey 19). The two groups received different treatment and care from the nurses throughout the
novel. In the 1950 s, short term patients often received better care than long term patients that were
not expected to recover (The Short Story). In both the book and in real life, the mental hospitals
both separated patients that had potential to get better and leave the institution and from those that
did not; the Acutes were the short term patients and the Chronics were the long term patients.
Moreover, those that could leave eventually were either voluntary or involuntary patients.
McMurphy said to Harding Why didn t you tell me she could keep me committed in here till she s
good and ready to turn me loose (Kesey 166). McMurphy is an example of an involuntary patient.
During the 20th century, a person involuntarily admitted could be discharged from the approval of
the superintendent and the consent of a psychiatrist (Nesnera and Baldwin 27). In the novel,
McMurphy only became aware of his situation in the ward after he spoke to the lifeguard. On the
other hand, Harding explained to McMurphy, I m voluntary. I m not committed (Kesey 167). In the

Comparing The Contender And Creed
The Contender and Creed are so much alike, in many ways. The Contender is about a boy,
Alfred, who has gotten into some trouble, he wants to learn to fight to defend himself. Creed is
about a boy, Adonis, who is in and out of homes and ends up in juvie for fighting. He eventually
moves in with his grandma and wants to be like his father, who was a fighter. Both are about
boxers and makes them more similar. The characters of Adonis and Alfred are similar, for the
fact, that they are both about boxing and helping each of them finding their way. They are also
different because Adonis is trying to become a champion and Alfred is trying to become a
contender. A champion is a person who has defeated all rivals in a competition. A contender is a

Human Construction Workers
Since the introduction to computers and the evolvment of them, humans are being replaced in all
industries including construction. In fifty years from now, human construction workers will be
drastically reduced or totally replaced. To once was thought of as science fiction, like CP30 and
R2D2 from Star Wars, this has become our new reality. In researching the question, will
computerized robots replace humanconstruciton workers? My answer is yes. In this paper, I will
explain and demonstrate, through my research, why I believe that computerized robots will be
replaced by human construction workers.
The industry has evolved from human hand drawn paper blueprints to computer generated
blueprints and home designs. For example, in certain fields they are using computer laser guided
cutting systems for granite glass and concrete. As far as the robotic end of it, we ve got remote
controlled boom trucks that lift materials. There are also concrete pump trucks that are remotely
controlled to pour concrete. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

International Economic Policy in Times of Crisis Essay
Governments face all kinds of crises every day, the approaches may be different but the goal is
always the same maintain stability. While, wars and crimes against humanity tend to take a toll
on the population, infrastructure and terrain quite literally, financial crises can psychologically
cripple a country. There s something about a financial crisis that conjures a level of panic that
could rival the outbreak of a deadly disease. Maybe this is caused by a lack of visible end, as it
seems the light at the end of the tunnel is only made clear at the end of the crisis. Even with
examples from history to refer to, each financial crisis seems to take on a version all its own like a
new strain of a deadly virus. The government tries to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Great Depression of the 1930s is often used today as a point of reference to learn from failed
protectionist policies. Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929 marks the horrifying beginning to the
Great Depression with the most devastating collapse in the stock market until the recent crisis. The
U.S. government passed the Smoot Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 in reaction to the financial crisis.
The act raised tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods to the second highest levels in American

Old School Rap Research Paper
Music is the vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce
beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion, as stated by Google. As a result, many
forms of music are produced. Music is divided into three groups: Hip Hop/ Rap, R B/Soul, and
World. Hip Hop and Rap are segregated into three subtopics: East coast, West Coast, and Old
School. East Coast rap is based in the New York region with an aggressive tone enclosing hard
beats. Artist like Nas, the Notorious B.I.G., and DMX characterize this culture of rap. West Coast
rap originates from California with a laid back sound resembling a funkrhythm. Tupac Shakur,
Snoop Dogg, and N.W.A are eminent West Coast rappers. The third group is the Old School rap.
Old School rap were the first rap groups coming in the 70 s and 80 s. Old School rap followed a
strict pattern, had simple raps, and were created to interpret a good time. Grandmaster Flash, Run

Liang Bua and the Specimen Liang Bua 1
Introduction On the island of Flores, Indonesia, a skull was extracted from a cave in 2003. This
cave was known as Liang Bua and the specimen became known as Liang Bua 1 (LB1). When
researchers first discovered this skull, they thought it belonged to a young child about three or
four years old because it was so small (Baab 2012). As days went on, more of the cranium and
mandible became exposed and they determined this skull did not belong to a small child.
Eventually, arm bones along with leg, feet, and wrist bones were discovered for LB1. LB1 was
very short, approximately 3 6 , which was similar to the other specimens found on this island
(Baab 2012). LB1 is the specimen for the species Homo floresiensis, also known as the Hobbit
(Baab and McNulty 2009, Dennell and Roebroeks 2005, Van Heteren 2013). Due to lack of
evidence, the evolution of Homo floresiensis remains very controversial. At the very beginning, it
was thought that the morphology of LB1 was due to island evolution (Aiello 2010). The isolation
from being on an island was considered to be the reasoning for the short stature and dwarf like
characteristics and that this species was a descendent of a large bodied hominin (Baab and
McNulty 2009). The morphology of the cranium and mandible has presented many different
interpretations of the evolution of H. floresiensis. As of now, there are two competing hypotheses
to possibly explain this evolution. Initial evidence shows that Homo floresiensis was a diseased

My Manfathers
People have different beliefs about who our ancestors are. In other words, how humans came
into existence on the mother Earth, and who they were. There are many different types of origin
stories, ranging from tribal specific Native American stories to the story of Adam and Eve and
beyond (Perea 18, 2014). As a Muslim, I believe all humans are the sons and daughters of Adam
and Eves. However, it is not clear if heaven that mentioned in the story is that magical place we
all think of, or was it just the mother Earth, but in much better form. I am from the Middle East,
where most of the oldest civilizations are located, and the origin of Islam, Christianity and
Judaism. Since it is the oldest known origin of humanity, the answer to where my ancestors
came from is nearly impossible to answer, because in order to find the answer you have to look
back at maybe not only 10,000 years back, but maybe millions, who knows? However, if you are
asking me about my ancestors that I have heard of, I still can not give you a clear answer due to the
fact that I come from a dry land, and as we all know water is an essential element of life, so the
way ancestors had been living in the desert is by following water, they were always moving.
Geologists now say that the desert was full of life, because there was a plenty of water, and that
led to the existence of many old civilizations. However, when the land starts drying out, people start
immigrating to other places, like Europe, Africa, the rest of Asia and the Americas.
In pow wow space, it is amazing to see the way that Native Americans are organizing themselves
around the drum and why. Dr. Hoehner described a pow wow as taking place within four circles
(Perea 25, 2014). Any culture has their own way of organizing themselves in a social gathering
such as singing, but I have always thought that American Indians pow wow space is built
differently to what mentioned in the book. The circle starts with fire, dancers mostly females,
drums and both singers and audience. Of course, that was not true.
The spacing topic made me think of a type of tribal singing that starting to disappear in the Arabian
Peninsula that had been practiced for thousands of years. It happens when two

  • 2. What Is The Theme Of Survival In The Road By Cormac Mccarthy The ability to paint beautiful ideas on a canvas of dark events and imagery is an essential skill in the arsenal of an accomplished writer. In his novel The Road, Cormac McCarthy demonstrates his understanding of this skill. A reviewer from the San Francisco Chronicle described The Road saying, [McCarthy s] tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy s stature as a living master. It s gripping, frightening, and, ultimately, beautiful. These descriptions of the tale are true throughout the novel, but particularly at the ending of the story. In the final pages of the book, McCarthy continues to engage the reader with gripping and frightening moments, to emphasize the theme of survival, and to reveal beauty and the miracle of goodness. Throughout the novel, survival is a constant objective for the boy and his father. McCarthy s gripping and frightening moments are most obviously interwoven with this theme. Soon after the death of his father the boy looks up and sees that someone was coming. He started to turn and go back into the woods but he didnt. He just stood in the road and waited, the pistol in his hand (McCarthy 281). With the approach of this new potential threat, the boy s safety and survival are brought into question. As the strange man comes near, a tension builds while the boy tries to make a decision that could quite possibly affect the rest of his life. • 3. Accounting Minefields Essay Tread Lightly through These Accounting Minefields Tremendous pressure is placed upon accountants and executives to provide favorable financial conditions of their organization (Sherman Young, 2001). As such, accounting practices are continually a source of question and concern for many organizations in reporting profits and corporate financial information to shareholders, stock markets, and government filings. Hence, the role of the ethical accountant and executives becomes crucial to the continued success and operation of the organization. Consequently, pitfalls or minefields of questionable accounting practices must be avoided. Said pitfalls include revenue measurement and recognition, provisions for uncertain future costs, asset valuation, derivatives, related party transactions, and information utilized in bench marking performance (Sherman Young, 2001). While impossible to fully eradicate the occurrence of questionable, unethical or illegal accounting practices regarding accounting minefields, organizations must implement procedures, controls, and culture to minimize the potential of such practices occurring within their establishments. Revenue Measurement and Recognition Revenue is an increase in a business equity resulting from the sale of products or services (Warren, Reeve Duchac, 2012). It is especially useful for more complex projects, with a large and diverse range of stakeholders Defining stakeholders in solid waste management We have found evidence that all of the groups described below are important in the project delivery process for solid waste management services. Stakeholders will not always fall into the above categories. In particular, whether a group is classified as secondary or external clearly depends on the specific project objectives. Background Solid waste management involves the storage, collection, transport and disposal of waste which is generated in the home, commercial premises and institutions. Good solid waste management is an important component of a strategy for improving environmental health. In addition to the obvious aesthetic importance of a garbage free living environment, uncollected solid waste rapidly putrefies in tropical climates, creating noxious smells, giving rise to polluting leachates, providing breeding areas for countless flies and, in the wet season, mosquitoes. A particularly important indirect effect is the blocking of drains, which causes local flooding with its associated environmental health risks and economic disbenefits. • 10. Comparison Of Kuhn And Popper s Understanding Of Science In this section we will compare and contrast Kuhn s understanding of science with Popper s understanding of science. These two methods are narrower when it comes to levels of scrutiny. They are also more open and willing to embrace change because they seek to change the status quo which is traditional science. Both scientists agree that the traditional method of science is too broad and ignores many different variables that could change the outcome of the results. They also concur on the idea that a subjective approach to science and reason is more suitable to reach a correct answer rather than shooting wildly in all directions and accepting the bullet that is closest to our target. Kuhn and Popper looked at traditional science as a method based on assumptions and estimates rather than exact truths or data. They do differ however in some ways. Kuhn does not believe that falsifying theories is necessary to ascertain the truth like Popper does. He simply believes that society is rapidly changing and therefore the methods of science must change also. Popper does not necessarily concern himself with sociological opinions or status quos. He focuses more on the procedures of traditional methods and works to disprove theories. Karl Popperwas an Austrian British philosopher as well as a professor of science. He grew up in a wealthy family and surrounded himself with education and knowledge. He attended various lectures and soon found himself accepting the socialist ideas of Karl ... The two systems not only demonstrate the early concept of writing but show contrasting elements of civilization in globalism vs nationalism, internal vs external, connection vs isolation. The two systems certainly diverged from one another, but to understand this, the origins of the two writingsystems must be examined. Around the dawn of civilization, in the last half of the third millennium, abstract symbols (meaning letters, numbers, and other things that represent abstract thought) started to form from proto writing that had been present for millennia in the Nile valley before the first abstract... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But it is undeniable that hieroglyphics had more influence on history than cuneiform did, in spite of the fact that cuneiform was more advanced for its time. This is the first way that these systems contrast; sophistication. Cuneiform was a more advanced system than hieroglyphics simply because cuneiform was more abstract and it was far quicker to write Sumerian with it. Hieroglyphics was, for much of its existence, a logographic system, making it in some ways closer to drawing than to abstract writing such as cuneiform. However, in the Neolithic times, sophistication had an inverse relationship with influence, that is to say, that less advanced writing systems had more influence and clout with other cultures. This may have been because it is hard to teach an illiterate culture who may adopt a writing system, a complex, writing scheme, or a system that doesn t work in their language. Or, it may because the more advanced a writing system is, the fewer people in your culture understand how to use it. This can be seen with cuneiform and hieroglyphics in a very stark way. Not many cultures used cuneiform, and when they did it worked poorly with the language it was being used in, while hieroglyphs informed many other writing systems, such as Hebrew, Greek, and Phoenician; it cannot be understated the ... Research psychologist, Irving Janis, defined groupthink as . . . a deterioration in mental efficiency, reality testing and moral judgments as a result of group pressures (84). The overarching goal of this study is to analyze what the normative actions of support, specifically advice, are. The research questions that were taken into consideration are as follows: what goals are pursued as people ask for, and give, advice; what identity and relational implications of advice shape givers and receivers reactions to advice; and what situational, conversational, and cultural constraints are relevant to participants evaluation of advice? Abstract: Nowadays, using robots instead of humans in risk operations is an interesting point in the field of robotics. In this paper we introduce an integrated approach for search and rescue operation of detecting gas sources in large areas; e.g. houses, factories, and labs. This aims at saving people s lives at bottlenecks resulting from gas leak and ignition of fires. Experiment is performed using master Khepera robot supplied with gas sensor circuit to search map, in addition to two slave Khepera supplied with gripper to take the best path to clinch the victim. Moreover, this paper proposes an improvement of Albers exploration algorithm to reduce the time required to explore unknown map with different polygon obstacles. The proposed approach aims to minimizing the overall exploration time, making it possible to localize fire sources in an efficient way, as demonstrated in Vrep simulation as well as real world experiments with Khepera III robot. A comparison among different algorithms has showed the effectiveness of the proposed one where the percentage of performance speedup is about 30% to 57% depending on size of the map and number of obstacles. 1 INTRODUCTION Autonomous Robots are meant to perform searching operations inside buildings, mines and caves , which are considered extremely serious. These people really do not have a choice but to be homeless and at the bottom of the caste system deemed the untouchables . The homeless have become the hunters and gatherers of modern society. They feed themselves by begging, scavenging, and raiding garbage for (particularly that of restaurants) food. DNA is an effective weapon for both prosecutors and defendants; therefore, the DNA crime investigators need to compare a profile believed to be from a crime perpetrator with a known person s profile. • 28. Lao Tzu Oligarchies Throughout the time of recorded history, humans have had the natural desire for protection and order. That desire is where government comes in. There have been many forms of government throughout history, according to Aristotle, there have only been two types, oligarchies and democracies. Aristotle goes on to say that there are variations of these governments; for example, an aristocracy is considered to be an oligarchy where the wealthy land owners make the decisions in government. Later in that same paragraph, he states that a republic is a form of democracy; these are not the only variations of democracies and oligarchies as there are many variations of these two types of government along the spectrum (Aristotle 3). Societies all through history have one thing in common, they all had some form of government; This raises the question though, what is the difference between a good and bad government? Lao Tzu has an insight on the differences between a good and bad government in his philosophical writing, Thoughts from the Tao te Ching, where he states that a good government shall not make their people want, they should provide everything that their people need. He also states that wars cause chaos and a good leader would not wage war and sacrifice his or her people and be moral in their decisions (Tzu 19). The Socialist Party was fueled by the idea of Utopian Communities, in which communities possessed highly desirable or perfect qualities. Is this a realistic concept? Society is often less concerned about this population when they should be more concerned. As discussed above, as some transition into later life, it is almost like they are entering a new world that they must readjust to. They have to get comfortable in their new living environment, sometimes without their spouse and with fewer friends and family members around. As a society, if we don t start monitoring this population, the high rates will continue to rise and more older adults will continue to self harm which will lead to a huge social justice matter. In order to advocate for this population, we must first educate those who are not aware. Fiber optic technology is often discussed in a wide range of conversations. This may be when people talk about TVs, phones, internet, or general technology. Fiber optics may also be referred to when talking about light and optics. An optical fiber is defined as a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of human hair (Wikipedia). These fibers are used as a means of light transmission from one end of the fiber to the other end of the fiber and this is referred to as fiber optic communications. These fibers are quite technologically advanced because they have the ability to transmit more data and at a quicker rate than normal cables made of wire. There is also much less lost data when using fiber optic technology. Clearly, the benefits of fiber optics are much greater than traditional wired cables. Fiber optic cables are also used for the purpose of lighting and sensing. There are already many practical applications of the technology such as lasers, but these applications are just the beginning of the potential of this powerful technology. II. As a matter of fact, the British discoveries of diamonds and other natural minerals and resources in South Africa has played a huge factor in transforming the nation into an advanced economy. Some of these discoveries include highly precious diamonds and gold. In fact, the most extreme transformations in South Africa s economy occurred between 1870 and 1902. As a result of these transformations, the nation was on the verge of urbanization and industrialization as it began to emerge as an international trader of it s valuable minerals. One of the industries responsible for inaugurating the transformation of the South African economy is the diamond industry. This industry commenced operations when thousands of British citizens moved to South Africa in order to seek their fortune in the 1860s. This incentive resulted in rapid industrialization as they started diamond diggings in the British colony of South Africa due to the high probability of striking diamonds. This eventually led to the mining industry since the mining capitalists purchased the diggers as a joint stock. The gold industry, started in 1886 and by 1899, it had produced about three tenths of the world s gold and had investments worth more than 100 million US as gold was used for the world s currencies and was thus had a very big need for it everywhere. It also had a workforce greater than 100 thousand people thus creating employment for the society. • 47. Benefits And Side Effects Of Lithium disorder is treated, each method working for some, but not for others; each method also has its benefits and side effects. Doctors tried for years to find the treatment for this disorder, but were unsuccessful until the discovery of Lithium. Prior to the discovery of Lithium, people with disorders did not have a way to deal with their disease because earlier forms of treatment, such as psychotherapy, ECT, and antidepressant did not work and sometimes the drugs even triggered an episode. Lithium was a known substance found in simple mineral salts, but it was not until 1949 when John cade was doing an experiment on rats that he found how useful lithium was in calming the effects the disorder (Comer 2013). The use of Lithium was approved by the FDA in 1970 and was shown to improve the symptoms of more than 60% of manic patients and also help prevent the symptoms from ever developing. The amount of lithium dosage given to patients is a critical process because too little of the medicine can have little effect, but too much can result in lithium intoxication which can lead to nausea, vomiting, sluggishness, tremors, dizziness, kidney dysfunction and can possible result in death. Patients should also have their doctors check the lithium level in their blood to avoid intoxication. Despite the effectiveness of this drug, it has some side effects. Lithium can cause dry mouth, restlessness, bloating or ingestion and many more changes in the body (National Institution of Mental ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Theme Of Mental Asylum In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest How Realistic the Mental Hospital Was In One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest Ken Kesey s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest depicts a story of a sane man, Randle McMurphy, who decides to escape imprisonment by entering a psychiatric ward instead. The entire story is viewed in the eyes of a schizophrenic patient, Chief Bromden. This novel is set around the 1950 s in a mental asylum in Oregon. Besides the plot of the story, Kesey also manages to illustrate a realistic 1950 s mental hospital. The facilities, therapy and the release of patients in mental asylum in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest by Ken Kesey realistically depicts the conditions of mental hospitals during the 1950 s. In the novel, they separated the patients in the ward into two groups, the Acutes and the Chronics. The Acutes were those that can get cured and eventually leave, while the Chronics are in for good (Kesey 19). The two groups received different treatment and care from the nurses throughout the novel. In the 1950 s, short term patients often received better care than long term patients that were not expected to recover (The Short Story). In both the book and in real life, the mental hospitals both separated patients that had potential to get better and leave the institution and from those that did not; the Acutes were the short term patients and the Chronics were the long term patients. Moreover, those that could leave eventually were either voluntary or involuntary patients. McMurphy said to Harding Why didn t you tell me she could keep me committed in here till she s good and ready to turn me loose (Kesey 166). McMurphy is an example of an involuntary patient. During the 20th century, a person involuntarily admitted could be discharged from the approval of the superintendent and the consent of a psychiatrist (Nesnera and Baldwin 27). In the novel, McMurphy only became aware of his situation in the ward after he spoke to the lifeguard. On the other hand, Harding explained to McMurphy, I m voluntary. I m not committed (Kesey 167). • 50. Human Construction Workers Since the introduction to computers and the evolvment of them, humans are being replaced in all industries including construction. In fifty years from now, human construction workers will be drastically reduced or totally replaced. To once was thought of as science fiction, like CP30 and R2D2 from Star Wars, this has become our new reality. In researching the question, will computerized robots replace humanconstruciton workers? My answer is yes. In this paper, I will explain and demonstrate, through my research, why I believe that computerized robots will be replaced by human construction workers. The industry has evolved from human hand drawn paper blueprints to computer generated blueprints and home designs. For example, in certain fields they are using computer laser guided cutting systems for granite glass and concrete. As far as the robotic end of it, we ve got remote controlled boom trucks that lift materials. There are also concrete pump trucks that are remotely controlled to pour concrete. ... • 51. International Economic Policy in Times of Crisis Essay Governments face all kinds of crises every day, the approaches may be different but the goal is always the same maintain stability. While, wars and crimes against humanity tend to take a toll on the population, infrastructure and terrain quite literally, financial crises can psychologically cripple a country. There s something about a financial crisis that conjures a level of panic that could rival the outbreak of a deadly disease. Maybe this is caused by a lack of visible end, as it seems the light at the end of the tunnel is only made clear at the end of the crisis. Even with examples from history to refer to, each financial crisis seems to take on a version all its own like a new strain of a deadly virus. The government tries to... • 53. Liang Bua and the Specimen Liang Bua 1 Introduction On the island of Flores, Indonesia, a skull was extracted from a cave in 2003. This cave was known as Liang Bua and the specimen became known as Liang Bua 1 (LB1). When researchers first discovered this skull, they thought it belonged to a young child about three or four years old because it was so small (Baab 2012). As days went on, more of the cranium and mandible became exposed and they determined this skull did not belong to a small child. Eventually, arm bones along with leg, feet, and wrist bones were discovered for LB1. LB1 was very short, approximately 3 6 , which was similar to the other specimens found on this island (Baab 2012). LB1 is the specimen for the species Homo floresiensis, also known as the Hobbit (Baab and McNulty 2009, Dennell and Roebroeks 2005, Van Heteren 2013). Due to lack of evidence, the evolution of Homo floresiensis remains very controversial. At the very beginning, it was thought that the morphology of LB1 was due to island evolution (Aiello 2010). The isolation from being on an island was considered to be the reasoning for the short stature and dwarf like characteristics and that this species was a descendent of a large bodied hominin (Baab and McNulty 2009). The morphology of the cranium and mandible has presented many different interpretations of the evolution of H. floresiensis. As of now, there are two competing hypotheses to possibly explain this evolution. Initial evidence shows that Homo floresiensis was a diseased ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. My Manfathers People have different beliefs about who our ancestors are. In other words, how humans came into existence on the mother Earth, and who they were. There are many different types of origin stories, ranging from tribal specific Native American stories to the story of Adam and Eve and beyond (Perea 18, 2014). As a Muslim, I believe all humans are the sons and daughters of Adam and Eves. However, it is not clear if heaven that mentioned in the story is that magical place we all think of, or was it just the mother Earth, but in much better form. I am from the Middle East, where most of the oldest civilizations are located, and the origin of Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Since it is the oldest known origin of humanity, the answer to where my ancestors came from is nearly impossible to answer, because in order to find the answer you have to look back at maybe not only 10,000 years back, but maybe millions, who knows? However, if you are asking me about my ancestors that I have heard of, I still can not give you a clear answer due to the fact that I come from a dry land, and as we all know water is an essential element of life, so the way ancestors had been living in the desert is by following water, they were always moving. Geologists now say that the desert was full of life, because there was a plenty of water, and that led to the existence of many old civilizations. However, when the land starts drying out, people start immigrating to other places, like Europe, Africa, the rest of Asia and the Americas. In pow wow space, it is amazing to see the way that Native Americans are organizing themselves around the drum and why. Dr. Hoehner described a pow wow as taking place within four circles (Perea 25, 2014). Any culture has their own way of organizing themselves in a social gathering such as singing, but I have always thought that American Indians pow wow space is built differently to what mentioned in the book. The circle starts with fire, dancers mostly females, drums and both singers and audience. Of course, that was not true. The spacing topic made me think of a type of tribal singing that starting to disappear in the Arabian Peninsula that had been practiced for thousands of years. It happens when two ...
