Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time
Messiaen s Quartet for the End of Time Quator Pour Le Fin Du Temps
Technical and Interpretative Challenges Presented to Performers in Messiaen s Quartet for the End of
Time
Olivier Messiaen (1908 1992) played a significant part in the evolution of twentieth century music,
influencing a number of other composers with his innovative compositional techniques. The Quartet
for the End of Time, is not one of Messiaen s typical works due to the circumstances in which it was
composed (his main outputs were organ, orchestral and choral works), but it marks the start of the
significant use of some of these techniques.
In 1940, Messiaen was called up to serve in the army as a hospital orderly, but was soon captured by
the Germans and taken to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Interpretative challenges presented by theological ideas behind the Quatuor
The Quatuor is based on Revelation 10.1 7, in particular the phrase there shall be no more time. Time
is represented musically in different ways throughout the Quatuor and the addition of this theological
basis to the piece may well have been prompted by the prisoner of war conditions in which he found
himself, in which time might indeed have seemed literally endless, and the Apocalypse close at hand .
It is difficult to know, though, to what extent this theological basis must be considered and portrayed
when performing the Quartet for the End of Time. The words that it is based on appear in the title and
preface, but the challenge to the performer is deciding to what extent the text should be interpreted as
a narrative or programme.
Similar challenges are presented by Romantic music; if a composer does not provide an explicit
programme e.g. Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique it is up to the performer to interpret whether one was
meant and to what extent it should be portrayed in a performance.
The deciding factor in the case of the Quatuor is to consider movements 5 and

During The Iron Age Between 590-529 B.c
During the Iron Age between 590 529 B.C.E., the Assyrian Empire was taking its final footsteps, and
breaking down into smaller regional powers, the Egyptians, the Medes, the Lydians, and the New
Babylonians (Making Europe 51). Along with these new regional powers, was the kingdom of Persia,
which was established around 700 B.C.E., and for the first 150 years of the Persian Kingdom, the
Persian Kings were vassals of the Medes (Making Europe 53). In 553 B.C.E., the Persians began to
revolt against the Medes and finally defeated them in 550 B.C.E., which marked the beginning of the
Persian Empire. In 547 B.C.E. looking to expand commercial activity, the Persians attacked and

After dreaming that Cyrus would eventually overthrow him, Astyages ordered for Cyrus to be killed,
but the Shepherd who was supposed to kill Cyrus decided to raise Cyrus as his own son. In 553
B.C.E., Cyrus revolted against the Medes, and in 550 B.C.E., defeated Astyages and the Medes,
becoming the first ruler of the Persian Empire. Looking to expand his empire in 547 B.C.E., Cyrus
then attacked Lydia, capturing both Lydia and the Mediterranean coast of Anatolia (Making Europe
53). A few later, in 539 B.C.E., Cyrus ventured into Mesopotamia, capturing Babylon with barely any
retaliation. Based upon the respect that Cyrus showed towards the Babylonians, the cities of Syria and
Palestine soon respected the authority of Cyrus the Great (Making Europe 54). In 535 B.C.E., Cyrus
also displays his religious conciliation of his subject peoples by allowing the Jews to leave Babylon
and return home, which first began the Jewish Diaspora. It is evident that Cyrus rule over his growing
Persian Empire was filled with tolerance and respect towards his subject peoples.
After the defeat of the Medes and the beginning of the Persian Empire in 550 B.C.E., Cyrus was
looking to expand his empire. According to Kidner, the Persians had a great interest in economic
development and expanded commercial activity (53). Cyrus goal of economic development was
apparent in his capture of Lydia. In 547 B.C.E., the Persians attacked and captured Lydia along with

Greek Life Pros And Cons
Have you ever seen the television series Greek? It suggests drugs, alcohol and sex are the three most
important elements that make up a typical sorority girl or frat boy s life. Students involved in Greek
life are always throwing wild parties and drinking until they pass out, getting involved in relationship
drama, sending their pledges on crazy tasks in the middle of the night, and never seeming to take any
responsibility. However, there is one thing missing from this hit reality series: the truth. In their late
works about Greek life, Evan Wright, Caitlin Flanagan s and Whipple and Sullivan s articles argued
that Greek life has its pros, but merely more cons. Whipple and Sullivan believed that the Greek
communities face a number of high challenges. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you re shy, it s an easy way to make friends and divide from your high school group. You ll make
friends even more so than just your particular house. You ll meet people during the recruitment and
rush process and at Greek activities, such as socials and philanthropic events both in sororities and
fraternities. If you re attending or planning to attend a larger school, it makes campus seem a lot
smaller because you re included in the Greek community. Feeling like a small fish in the ocean can be
pretty daunting, so making campus feel smaller can be quite comforting at times. In other words,
modern Greek life is a little more different from Wright s and Whipple and Sullivan s times; the 19th
century. The Modern Greek life has change quite tremendously; from the hazing policies, to the
amount of alcohol intakes and partying. The Greek system on Stetson University is quite a Greek
system alright. Getting the chance to speak with one of the Public Safety officers on campus, they
have concluded that they made approximately five trips to the Greek houses for partying; being very
low for a University frat party. Comparing the Greek life at Stetson to one of a HBCU s (Historically
Black Colleges and University), Greek life will be extremely different. From the partying, to amount
of alcohol intake, to the assaults and lastly the expulsion of a fraternity or sorority for hazing. Stetson

Security Protecting Their Information Technology And The...
Unit 13 P1:
Security:
Security protects organisation or properties from an individual without authorisation. Security protects
your computer from assault, theft and fraud etc. In business there needs to be a document stating how
the company can protect their information technology and the company s material. This all needs to be
written down. The company s security policy is always updated because of the employee and
technology. There are many security threats on the internet, here are a few of them:
Identity theft:
Identity theft is when a criminal gets hold of your personal information. For example bank account
details.
Virus:
Virus is a code that attacks the network system and computer. This happens because the data files are
contaminated and this is done on a system through the internet or disk. The virus tries to hid it self and
send it self to others. The virus is harmful to your computer.
Trojan:
Trojan is a virus that makes the user believe that it is good for their computer and this virus is hard to
remove this treat.
Trend analysis:
Trend analysis predicts the potential movements of a stock that is based on past data. There are
different types of charts that you can create. For instances you can make a chart Traders get an idea of
what might happen in the future, they get this idea from what has happened before in the past. The
three types of trends are long, short, and intermediate term. Trend analysis is good because it does not

Biology of a Squid Essay
Biology of a Squid
Squids are among the most varied and unique of all invertebrates. They are mollusks of the Class
Cephalopod, along with the nautilus, cuttlefish, and octopus. Squids are highly evolved, and have
developed a number of traits uncommon to most other mollusks. Fossil records of cephalopods have
dated back the Cambrian Period (about 600 million years ago). Structurally, squids have only small
variations of a basic theme common to all cephalopods. They are spherical or cigar shaped with two
fins used to stabilize movement when swimming. Ten arms are easily distinguished emerging from
near the mouth Eight of these arms each have four rows of suction cups encircled by rings of chitinous
(horny) hooks. These suction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Squids (and cephalopods in general) possess several unusual abilities that help them deal with their
predators (which range anything from large fish to sperm whales). Their lack of an external shell
allows them to squeeze into very tight places, enabling them to conveniently and easily hide from their
enemies. When confronted with a dangerous animal away from hiding places, however, squids seem
to have a disadvantage when compared to other mollusks with external shells. If attacked, they have
no exterior protection. To counter this potential crisis, they have adapted a number of tactics. First,
they are capable of temporarily altering the color of their skin, in effect camouflaging themselves.
They can shift their appearance from a deep brown color, to a white, or almost transparent quality.
Along with this, they are able to slightly change the texture of their skin. This form of camouflage
allows the squid to take the form of rocks, seaweed, or other ocean dwelling objects. If a hazardous
foe is not fooled by camouflage, the squid can release an ink cloud. The ink cloud has a number of
helpful characteristics that can ward off enemies. The cloud initially causes the nearby water to
become dark and cloudy, reducing the enemy s visibility and allowing the squid to escape from
danger. Some deep sea squids contain bacteria in their ink so that the cloud glows, and scares away
harmful rivals.

Q
The greatness of Alexander III, as he was originally, has been disputed in the past. His legend has
survived for thousands of years, and his name is well known, but just how great was he? In answering
this question it is necessary to define the terms deserve and great . For these purposes, to deserve will
mean to be worthy of. Great has many meanings, and will be defined as: important; grand;
distinguished; remarkable in ability or character; competent; or above what is normal, with implied
admiration. Alexander, son of Philip, the king of the Macedonians, was more than most men. His
achievements were admirable, and his success brilliant. His accomplishments were grand, momentous
and distinguished, having huge impact on the history of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alexander had remarkable ability, and so was great in many different ways. On top of doing great
things, Alexander was a great leader, and a political and military genius. His goal to conquer Persia
was one that he would let nothing stand in the way of. As leader of his troops, he suffered their same
wounds, being one of the last great leaders to personally take the risk of death in battle. Alexander
listened to every man he had, and so became very close to his men. Some argue his ability in
motivating and inspiring his men was in fact the greatest ever seen, half defeating the opposition in
nerves before a battle began. He was also remarkable with military tactics, employing strategies still
used today. As the Encarta Encyclopedia put it: Alexander was one of the greatest generals of all time,
noted for his brilliance as a tactician and troop leader and for the rapidity with which he could traverse
great expanses... He succeeded politically as well, earning respect from many people. Alexander s
charisma and adoption of Persian customs gave him strong loyalty needed in order to control his
massive empire. However, the greatness in his work here is questionable: often he used brutal force,
sometimes killing thousands of civilians, or selling them into slavery. But overall, Alexander must be
seen as great man in terms of a leader and a military commander. There is one major area of Alexander
where heated debates often occur: his character and

Rome, a vast empire that could not control itself, due to how much it had grown, was in a dire need

a civil war. An unstable Republic and a near civil war brought three men to set aside their differences
and even contempt for one another to join forces and dominate the government of Rome, even

Caesar heard the news in Ravenna, and knew that he had to make a choice between prosecution and
rebellion; preferring the dignity of war over the humiliation of a process, Caesar chose to rebel,
quoting his favorite poet Menander, the die is cast. In the night of 10/11 January, the Thirteenth legion
advanced to Rimini, where he could control the passes across the Apennines. In doing so, he crossed
the river Rubico, thereby invading Italy and provoking the Second Civil War. However, it turned out
that the Senate had made a disastrous mistake. It had believed that the issue was between a rebel and
the legitimate rulers, and it had expected that the towns of Italy would send troops in defense of the
authority of the Senate and the Roman People s liberties. But Italy was skeptical about its champions,

Love And Vengeance
Portrayal of Love Vengeance in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni s
The Palace of Illusions
Is the desire for vengeance stronger than the longing to be loved?
Love and vengeance are two emotions that have an astounding level of control on us. However which
is a stronger driving force remains questionable. Love without fear and spite is the most powerful
human emotion; and still, it can be easy to slip back into an old way, a jealous rage, a resistance or
belief that one isn t worthy. Though it s a hard feeling to pinpoint, it s presence can be felt in everyone
s life. It is a practice like most of one s life lessons, and it can be abundant if one sticks with it and
expels the darkness from their heart and mind. Rightly said by Divakaruni ... Show more content on

She understood that perhaps they loved her but as a man they loved the notion of honour, of loyalty
towards each other and reputation more than her suffering. Then she decides that she will remember
the lesson taught to her and will use it to take revenge, no matter what its price. The questions
Draupadi raises, the things she resists and the emotions which drive her strengths in her discourse all
leave us, inquisitively, questioning our reception and reading of the Mahabharata. The distinctness of
Draupadi s narrative stands with the fact that Draupadi s feministic retelling, which is somewhat a
modern rendering fits into the plot of Mahabharata. Draupadi s story is more close to humanised
rendering, her anger, resentment, and suppressed desire make her one like us. She develops a concern
for the role of women which is distinctly modern and contemporary.
The Palace of Illusions is a story of vengeance. Panchaali s father vowed to avenge himself upon the
man who stole half his kingdom, and Panchaali herself later seeks her revenge for the action that
shamed her and took away everything she and her husbands had. Vengeance and pride coil together
within Panchaali, giving her no rest. But the big question is would vengeance really give her

Recommendation On Future Policy For The 30 % Solar...

SUBJECT: Recommendation on future policy for the 30% Solar Investment Tax Credit
I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Created in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the 30% Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is the solar
industry s most important and only public policy that supports the deployment of solar energy in the
United States to both the residential and commercial sectors. The 30% ITC has been successful in
increasing deployment and lowering costs of solar energy. Since the eight year extension created by
the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, solar prices have consistently fallen year after
year while installation rates and efficiencies have continued to rise, thus equaling the average cost of
solar energy dropping by more than 73% and a 6500% annual growth rate since 2006, as reported by
an independent analysis done by Bloomberg New Energy and Finance dated September 15, 2015,
commissioned by the Solar Energy Industries Association. However, the ITC is set to expire
December 31, 2016, and a failure to extend the ITC, according industry experts reported by PR
Newswire July 22, 2015, would result in 90 percent of all solar companies going out of business and
thousands of jobs lost . In response to the looming expiration date, Ari Natter, Bloomberg Energy
Reporter, reports the solar industry is launching an all out push starting in 2015 to extend the
investment tax credit . At this point, there are 3

The Sorrow of War Essay
The Sorrow of War
Bao Ninh s The Sorrow of War is a novel that is a personal view of the Vietnam War from the
perspective of a Vietnamese soldier. Like the American novel The things they carried , this novel
brings about the effects of war on people, and especially how it defeats the human capacity for things
such as love and hope. Bao Ninh offers this realistic picture of the Vietnam War s impact on the
individual Vietnamese soldier through use of a series of reminiscences or flashbacks, jumping
backwards and forwards in time between the events most salient in memory, events which take on a
different theme each time they are examined. His main protagonist Kien, who is basically Bao
himself, looks back not just at his ten years at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Along with not seeing the bigger picture soldiers lost their ordinary lives due to the war and the
contrast was so different between pre and post war that it was hard to cope with life for the men
fighting in the war. For Kien, the most attractive, persistent echo of the past is the whisper of ordinary
life, even though the sounds of ordinary life have been washed away by the long storms of war. It is
the whispers of friends and ordinary people that are the most horrifying. (63) The strongest emotions
occur as the story unfolds and life takes over from childhood fantasies, destroying individuals and
their families as a whole society is remade for instance Kien s sweetheart before the war. Kien
abandons his lover and instead spends the next years plodding through the jungle where everything
dies. no jungle grew again in this clearing. No grass, no plants (26). He had no true friends and he
learned not to fear death but rather wish it. When war ends he has a struggle to rebuild that was once
loss, he can no longer see the good of things while he slowly goes insane with out love and hope and
of course no sweetheart to aid him. A very sad and classical effect of a war that was worthless to its
soldiers and people. The war had changed people in so many ways, as their former character of being
sincere, at peace, and loving was slowly changed to chaotic, indecisive and unhopeful lives. People
began to forget who they really were all due to the war, It

Physical Appearance Of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Kayla Caputo
Ms. Schindler
English IV

Physical Appearance
In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley shows that appearance does not represent internal character by the use
of contrasting characters. Shelley uses the characters of the monster and Victor to show that looks don
t determine your personality. Physical appearance is related to internal character due to the fact that
people judge on looks before anything else. Social media, making people more concerned with their
looks, has influenced the importance of appearance. Different studies show that people pick their
friends and spouses based on appearance. Physical appearance is not an indicator of character, but still
the acceptance of someone who looks different lies in the eyes of judgmental people.
In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, physical appearance plays an immense role in the way characters are
treated. Many would believe that a beautiful exterior represents a beautiful soul, but that is not the
case. Victor creates a hideous monster that later becomes mistreated and judged solely on his
appearance. The monster is never given a chance by anyone besides Mr. De Lacey to show his inner
self. I am blind, and cannot judge of your countenance, but there is something in your words which
persuades me that you are sincere (Shelley 120). Since De Lacey is blind, he does not have the power
to judge the harmless monster on his appearance. He accepts the monster into his home, not running in
terror from his harsh exterior.

I think that animal testing is a cruel and inhuman thing...
I think that animal testing is a cruel and inhuman thing to do especially if you are hurting the animal
on purpose. Even though animals don t have rights you should still not abuse them by burning them,
pulling their eyes out, or just beating them. Did you know that over hundred million animals are
abused in U.S. labs every year? Imagine if you were in the animals place how would you feel, would
you try to do something about it?
Animals are used to test on for things like medical studies, cosmetic testing, and behavioral studies.
Animal testing first started in early Greek in the 2nd and 4th centuries BCE.
Some famous researchers from the early ages who tested on animals are people like Abenzoar, an arab
physician and Moorish Spain who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And only about 36 percent that are in pain are given anesthesia to help relieve the the pain, so that
means that the other 64 percent of animals are are in pain. I think that rules for animal testing should
be strict so that not every year 100 million animals are in pain, suffering, or slowly dying because of
us humans. There are many different things we can use instead of testing on animals and killing them
like for example we can use human cells or we can use dead humans but the person being researched
on has to know and be okay with it just like a donor. Most of the test that are tested on are for
cosmetic testing, toxicology testing, drug testing, biomedical research, and also for educational
reasons. And most the animals that get tested on usually the drugs work on them but end up not
working on humans, another reason why animal testing is bad. Rabbits get tested on for contact lenses
and after researchers have put the lenses in the rabbits the take lenses out and take the rabbit s eye out.
Humans have rights and animals are pretty similar to humans so why shouldn t animals have rights.
Animal testing laws should be more strict so not a lot of animals end up dying. Animals are an
important part of this world, and if we don t take good care of them and keep on killing them, then
what are researchers going to do. Just like if you take out an animal out of a food chain then the whole
entire food chain gets affected, if we take out animals

The Use Of Enhanced Interrogation Techniques ( Eits )
The one lesson we ve learned from history is that we have not learned any of history s lessons
(Unknown Author, n.d.). The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the use of Enhanced Interrogation
Techniques (EITs) such as waterboarding and extraordinary rendition (aka black sites ) by CIA agents
for American intelligence interests and to analyze the drastically apposing views of the legalities,
morality, and effectiveness of these methods. Is the CIA s use of EITs and extraordinary rendition
equivalent to torture, and therefore, acts in violation of international law? The definition of torture
under statute 18 U.S.C. 2340 states, torture means an act committed by a person acting under the color
of law specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering (other than pain or
suffering incidental to lawful sanctions) upon another person within his custody or physical control
(United States Code, 2011). This definition expands with specific identifying characteristics of an act
and varies to include humiliation of an individual. Of course, pain and suffering is a subjective
experience. The worlds historical practice of torture reinforces lessons that human s imaginative
capacity for inflicting pain and terror on our fellow human is disgracefully boundless; yet, parallel
behaviors of violence and humiliation reemerge with disturbing regularity (Smith, 2013). The events

Trichotillomania Onset Pregnancy
Introduction:
Trichotillomania is characterized by recurrent episodes of hair pulling behavior leading to noticeable
loss of hair, increasing tension before hair pulling or while coping with the urge to pull out hair, taking
pleasure or a sense of relief while pulling out hair, and social, occupational, and functional
impairment1.
Trichotillomania can involve any area in the body; however, the most common areas are the scalp,
followed by the eyebrows and eyelashes in children and in adults2. The seriousness of the pulling
behavior is perceived over time, and the disease exhibits a chronic course and it is resistant to
therapy3. It has been reported that patients with trichotillomania often did not feel pain while pulling
out hair, followed a particular pattern of hair pulling, and often chose strands with unusual appearance,
and exhibit repetitive behavior such as engaging oral stimulation after hair pulling4 5. Some studies
have suggested that trichotillomania had many common features with obsessive compulsive disorder4
5.Here we discuss a patient with trichotillomania onset pregnanacy case.

Mental Health Care In Prison
The number of aging people in the prison system has and will continue to have a major impact on
health care. Not only while they are in jail but once they are released the cost of health care for these
individuals is still a burden. While incarcerated many illnesses go untreated. Usually there are a
couple different factors in this situation, one is mental health and the other is unmet psychosocial
needs. Many people that are employed by the prison system don t have the proper training to know
how to test for the vast mental illnesses that need to be tested for. Then on the other hand if they have
the training they are understaffed and don t have time to get to everyone that needs the help. While
there has been many studies on how to improve health care while in prison, there is still a lot of
research that needs to be done to get a better handle on the financial aspect. ... Show more content on

Criminal Justice Health Care, older prisoners is at the root of a healthcare crisis. ( I just used the title
and the sentence that is marked 1). While many of the older inmates are putting a major stress on the
criminal health care system, it is not only effecting them but the public health care as well. It is hard
for those who are released back into the public to get on the insurance that they require. A parolee can
wait months to get some kind of insurance, in the months that are spent waiting they often go to the
emergency room. They often cannot pay the fees that come along with going to the emergency room,
because it is harder for them to get employment. They are not as likely to be employed based on their

Views On Death And Dying In Western Culture
1. Reflect on Miller s (2015, p.599) Views on Death and Dying in Western Culture : These perceptions
dealing with aging and death in Western societies are unfortunately very true and I find some of them
disappointing. I think it is sad that we have come to the point of seeing our health almost as if it s not
important. It makes me upset that some ignore their health situation because they are in denial, do not
want to seem weak, or believe that they will lose their self worth. Also, it seems that some may
believe that they can control their death or sickness by taking advantage of new medical advances. It
is completely disregarding the power of God and choosing to designate the power to their physicians.

The last appointment is one that almost everyone, no matter how religious, elderly, or bored with life,
would like to postpone. The reason that we re reluctant to confront the end of our existence is not
simply that we enjoy life so much. For many of us, it s the fear of death and the process of dying that
makes us avoid the subject.
Some fears may center on the event of death itself, but many people seem more concerned about the
events that lead inexplicably to death. People fear the dying process as much as death itself. Perhaps
this is true of you. Think about it for a minute. Which do you fear most? (pick ONE response)

_______ I fear dying more than death.
_______ I fear neither. X I fear both of them.

flood risk areas are broken down into High risk, Moderate and Low risk areas with many layered
categories of all three levels. After re reading my Preferred Risk Policy/Flood Policy Declaration, for
my houses in Hawaii and Colorado, they both fell under Flood Risk Zone X, which is classified as a
moderate flood hazard area. For example, my home in Colorado, the flood map area is 08041C0575F,
and since it is not classified for risk for floods, it was classified as an X. Through the Flood Insurance

with a $20,000 coverage for the building and $8,000 coverage for personal belongings, both with a
$1,000 deductible, our yearly premium is $417.00. I thought this was an acceptable premium
considering the unknown risk, but I should be more cognizant in my community to get an actual

owners and by encouraging communities to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations.

The Iroquois Creation Myth
Exegesis Many Native Americans tell stories of the creation of earth that explain how they came to be
before the Europeans entered North America. Creation myths vary among all cultures; however, they
all have one thing in common; heaven and earth. One of the most popular creation myths was the
Iroquois creation myth. The Iroquois or Haudenosaunee meaning People of the Longhouse (Iroquois
Indian Museum, n.d.) consists of six Indian nations that include the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga,
Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora tribes. In the beginning, there was a belief that before the creation of
earth, there were two realms, the sky, and the lower world that consisted of water and water creatures.

He flung her head into the night sky and threw her body into the ocean, resulting in the Sky Woman

grandsons depicts the beginning of the world and creates the belief that everyone is born with good
and evil in them. The significance of nature influences how the Native Americans belief that nature,
animals, and humans are equal counterparts. If it had not been for the help of the animals, Sky Woman
would have died and the creation of earth would not exist. The twins play a significant role among the
Iroquois that the good and evil are necessary for the world to be in balance. The belief that Sky
Woman is the leader of all female life who controls the rise and fall of the waters and a companion to
the stars (Olan, n.d.) and regulates the monthly cycles of all females in which guarantees new life will
be born (Olan, n.d.). The myth signifies the Native American belief of how the creation and
reincarnation of humans connects to the rise and fall of the sun and moon. The Iroquois Creation Myth
is a detailed and complex myth that has many different versions. The earliest complete transcription
and translation of the Iroquois creation myth by David Cusick s Sketches of the Ancient History of the
Six Nations (Cusick, 1828). In different versions of the myth, Sky Woman gives birth to twin boys,

Pride And Prejudice By Jane Darcy Essay
When pride encounters prejudice. The novel Pride and Prejudice revolve around two characters
Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy from different socioeconomic class and their impression of
each other. As the title indicates, one character is prideful and the other prejudice. As the protagonist
of the novel, Elizabeth overcomes her prejudice feelings in to find happiness. But the path towards
finding romantic happiness involved two phase in the novel: the first phase involved Elizabeth finding
Mr. Darcy to be abhorrent in the beginning and the second phase is involved her overcoming her
misconception of Mr. Darcy. The shift in Elizabeth perception of Mr. Darcy leads to her falling in love
with Mr. Darcy. The first impression is the hardest impression to overcome. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy
did not have a very smooth first interaction. Because of his social status, Mr. Darcy comes across as
very pride during his first interaction with Elizabeth. Mr. Bingly (Mr. Darsy s friend) suggests that Mr.
Darcy dances with Elizabeth at a social event a ball. She [Elizabeth] is tolerable, but not handsome
enough to tempt me; I [Mr. Darcy] in no humour to present to give consequence to young ladies who
are slighted by other men. It is at this even that both characters reveal their flaws to each other. Instead
of saying no politely, Darcy shows his prideful character by insinuating that Elizabeth was not

In The Heart Of The Sea Analysis
In the time of The Essex and In the Heart of the Sea, Nantucket had a population of about 7,000, most
of the population living along a road on a rising hill marked with windmills and church steeples. At
the waterfront, four large docks extended more than 100 yards into the sea from the harbor. Tied up to
these docks were typically 15 to 20 whale ships, along with dozens of other small fishing boats and
ships that carried trade goods to and from the island. The first whaling boats were only 20 feet long,
launched from beaches along the island s south shore. Usually a boat would comprise of five
Wampanoag (Nantucket Natives) and a white man steering the boat. These boats were only used for
whaling around the island, as the had to be rowed back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They found their new target in that of the sperm whale. The oil found in the sperm whale s blubber
was far superior to that of the right whale found around Nantucket, providing a brighter and cleaner
burning light, but its block shaped head contained a much larger reservoir of this oil. This is where the
wealth of the island came from, nowadays Nantucket has a population of about 20,000 which, during
the summer, increases to about 50,000. The evidence of the island s former glory can still be seen
along the upper reaches of the town s Main Street, where the cobbles dip and rise like the sea and
where the houses evoke the humble spirituality of the island s Quaker past. The whaling business of
the 1800 s gave Nantucket it s incredible wealth. An average house in Nantucket costs more than in
other vacation destinations such as Long Island s Hamptons, with much of the population living there
only part time. Nantucket still has a large pull towards the ocean, with a large harbor and fishing boats
coming and going. Yet whaling is a thing of the past due to fishing regulations and laws, so without
this Nantucketers embrace the island s past and head to the sea in hopes of the biggest fish they can

The Key Elements Of Trust
When working with clients on trust, many of whom work for corporations and are faced with issues of
trust (or lack thereof) daily, understanding the three key elements of trust can be very helpful to them.
My guess is they will also be helpful to you first in enabling you to better distinguish specifically why
you don t trust someone and second in helping you become more effective in building trust yourself
(or repairing it when damaged).
To illustrate the inter relationship between the three core elements of trust, picture this in your mind.
Envision three circles drawn on a piece of paper all interlocking together in a Venn diagram so that
each overlaps with each other and in the middle, is a space in which all three overlap. That space
symbolizes the presence of all three elements of trust.
Whenever a person is perceived to act in a way that undermines trust in any of these three areas, trust
overall is diminished. Let s take a look now at each one of these areas.
Competence: The element of competence is what I call domain specific in that it depends on what area
of expertise or skill you are assessing someone to be trustworthy in. For instance, I trust my husband
implicitly; but I wouldn t trust him to give me a root canal. You may trust your spouse or a colleague
to be sincere and reliable, but would you may not trust them enough to remove the dead tree from
your backyard or do your tax return (you get the idea?). So the question you want to ask here is

Essay Josef Ackermann leadership style
Portfolio Essay: Final Draft
Josef Ackermann (Deutsche Bank/Germany)
Using Darling and Leffel s (2010) framework, this essay will evaluate on how Josef Ackermann
demonstrated his leadership style as a Swiss banker, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of
Deutsche Bank and Chairman of Zurich Insurance.
As defined by Peter Northouse (2001), leadership is a process, in which an individual influences a
group to achieve a common goal. And to achieve that goal, a visionary leader should put forth much
effort to critically apply his leadership skills and knowledge. In general, leadership is more than
management. To be successful, a leader has to be strategic, show motivation and innovation, and
should be flexible and focused ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of his biggest goals was turning Deutsche Bank into one of the world s top three advisers on
mergers and acquisitions and returning its status to the top ten in market value (Guyon , 2004).
As a Director level leader, Josef Ackermann has been well regarded and recognised by many as a
successful and effective manager and leader, shifting the style of management from a conventional
mode to one that focused on the needs of shareholders and on international expansion (Mitchell,
2010). According to Lussier and Achua (2010), leaders such as Ackermann are able to take swift and
decisive action, even in the most difficult situations, and take calculated risks while persevering in the
face of failure. Strong communication skills, self confidence, the ability to manage others and
willingness to embrace change also characterize a successful leader.
Ackermann has also been a member of the influential Washington based financial advisory body, the
Group of Thirty and also served on other company boards, including Bayer AG, Deutsche Lufthansa
AG, Linde, Mannesman, and Siemens AG. Ackermann changed the distribution of power within
Deutsche Bank, resulting in criticism from traditionalists and praise from those who shared his global
focus, allowing him to become the most powerful man in Germany s financial industry (Loades
Carter, 2005). Ackermann successful steered his bank through the 2008 global financial crisis. Quoted
in his speech before the Atlantic Council, Germany will

Cochlear Implants In Children
In today s society there is an ongoing debate of weather children who are deaf should receive cochlear
implants. A cochlear implant is a device that takes sound wave and changes the waves into electrical
activity for the brain to interpret. Wire called electrodes are surgically implanted into the cochlear
nerve which receives a signal from the microphone attached to the transmitter and speech processor.
The microphone captures the sound from the environment and the speech processor filters the noise
versus speech. Then the transmitter sends an electrical signal through the electrodes to stimulate the
cochlear nerve. Every person has a different thought depending on their experiences in their life
whether deaf children should receive cochlear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Studies have shown that if a child receives a cochlear implant before the child is 18 months old
followed by intensive therapy the child is likely to develop language skills that are comparable to their
peers and many children are able to attend mainstream schooling. This sounds great to parents, but
what happens when the cochlear implant doesn t work or if the child doesn t receive the necessary
therapy for understanding sound using the cochlear implant. Because the children were not exposed to
American sign language (ASL) this can delay the children education and learning compared to their
peers. When children are born to hearing parents they want the child to be like them and be able to
hear. To the hearing, deafness is a disability and if there is a way that they can make their child hear,
most parents will do everything in their power to make sure they can give that to their child. Then
again, many parents forget is that living with a cochlear implant is a lifelong process and involves
years to decades of therapy for their child. And if a child receives the implant later than 18 months old
it becomes harder for the child to understand speech from a cochlear implant and more intensive
therapy for the child. Children start learning language from their parents listening to them talk to
others and talk to the baby. If the child is deaf, they are missing this important development of speech,
which makes it harder for the child to learn to speak and understanding language. Also, most hearing
parents don t know ASL or sign fluently to be able to teach their children the language and help them
to start learning and be able to communicate with society. Today there are still parents that will not
learn ASL even though their child is deaf or maybe they received a cochlear implant and it didn t
work. This

Women In The Chrysanthemums
In the early 20th century, women across the world, mainly in America, began to act on their cravings

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and The Chrysanthemums authored by John Steinbeck, the two women

John Dewey on Education
John Dewey focuses on what he considers as the audacity of imagination being one of the most vocal
theorists on education and the related policies. He defines education as a process of instruction,
whereby it is unified by encouraging good. His theory of inquiry concentrates on the evolution of the
human race with respect to their surroundings. In addition, Dewy adopted the theory of evolution
initiated by Charles Darwin. Hence he is of the view that organisms in respect to their surroundings
evolve due to the need to survive since their natural environments determine the causes of action as
well as the behaviour. Dewey used what is considered as pragmatism, whereby the students are
expected to learn from hands on approach (Dewey, 1966). This is executed by individual experiences
in the classrooms as well as in non classroom settings. He believed that students are tasked with
learning for the individual process, as life is the best learning process and environment for accruing
essential knowledge. In addition, he believed that education could be attained through psychology,
which was a good basis for learning and accrual of an excellent education. Dewey distinguishes three
phases of education and learning processes. He identifies that the process of learning is instigated by
what is considered as a problematic situation (Dewey, 1966). This situation is defined by an individual
who has instinctive or habitual responses as a part of the human cognitive functions, which

  • 2. Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time Messiaen s Quartet for the End of Time Quator Pour Le Fin Du Temps Technical and Interpretative Challenges Presented to Performers in Messiaen s Quartet for the End of Time Olivier Messiaen (1908 1992) played a significant part in the evolution of twentieth century music, influencing a number of other composers with his innovative compositional techniques. The Quartet for the End of Time, is not one of Messiaen s typical works due to the circumstances in which it was composed (his main outputs were organ, orchestral and choral works), but it marks the start of the significant use of some of these techniques. In 1940, Messiaen was called up to serve in the army as a hospital orderly, but was soon captured by the Germans and taken to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Interpretative challenges presented by theological ideas behind the Quatuor The Quatuor is based on Revelation 10.1 7, in particular the phrase there shall be no more time. Time is represented musically in different ways throughout the Quatuor and the addition of this theological basis to the piece may well have been prompted by the prisoner of war conditions in which he found himself, in which time might indeed have seemed literally endless, and the Apocalypse close at hand . It is difficult to know, though, to what extent this theological basis must be considered and portrayed when performing the Quartet for the End of Time. The words that it is based on appear in the title and preface, but the challenge to the performer is deciding to what extent the text should be interpreted as a narrative or programme. Similar challenges are presented by Romantic music; if a composer does not provide an explicit programme e.g. Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique it is up to the performer to interpret whether one was meant and to what extent it should be portrayed in a performance. The deciding factor in the case of the Quatuor is to consider movements 5 and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. During The Iron Age Between 590-529 B.c During the Iron Age between 590 529 B.C.E., the Assyrian Empire was taking its final footsteps, and breaking down into smaller regional powers, the Egyptians, the Medes, the Lydians, and the New Babylonians (Making Europe 51). Along with these new regional powers, was the kingdom of Persia, which was established around 700 B.C.E., and for the first 150 years of the Persian Kingdom, the Persian Kings were vassals of the Medes (Making Europe 53). In 553 B.C.E., the Persians began to revolt against the Medes and finally defeated them in 550 B.C.E., which marked the beginning of the Persian Empire. In 547 B.C.E. looking to expand commercial activity, the Persians attacked and defeated the kingdom of Lydia, which also gave the Persians control ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After dreaming that Cyrus would eventually overthrow him, Astyages ordered for Cyrus to be killed, but the Shepherd who was supposed to kill Cyrus decided to raise Cyrus as his own son. In 553 B.C.E., Cyrus revolted against the Medes, and in 550 B.C.E., defeated Astyages and the Medes, becoming the first ruler of the Persian Empire. Looking to expand his empire in 547 B.C.E., Cyrus then attacked Lydia, capturing both Lydia and the Mediterranean coast of Anatolia (Making Europe 53). A few later, in 539 B.C.E., Cyrus ventured into Mesopotamia, capturing Babylon with barely any retaliation. Based upon the respect that Cyrus showed towards the Babylonians, the cities of Syria and Palestine soon respected the authority of Cyrus the Great (Making Europe 54). In 535 B.C.E., Cyrus also displays his religious conciliation of his subject peoples by allowing the Jews to leave Babylon and return home, which first began the Jewish Diaspora. It is evident that Cyrus rule over his growing Persian Empire was filled with tolerance and respect towards his subject peoples. After the defeat of the Medes and the beginning of the Persian Empire in 550 B.C.E., Cyrus was looking to expand his empire. According to Kidner, the Persians had a great interest in economic development and expanded commercial activity (53). Cyrus goal of economic development was apparent in his capture of Lydia. • 4. Greek Life Pros And Cons Have you ever seen the television series Greek? It suggests drugs, alcohol and sex are the three most important elements that make up a typical sorority girl or frat boy s life. Students involved in Greek life are always throwing wild parties and drinking until they pass out, getting involved in relationship drama, sending their pledges on crazy tasks in the middle of the night, and never seeming to take any responsibility. However, there is one thing missing from this hit reality series: the truth. In their late works about Greek life, Evan Wright, Caitlin Flanagan s and Whipple and Sullivan s articles argued that Greek life has its pros, but merely more cons. Whipple and Sullivan believed that the Greek communities face a number of high challenges. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you re shy, it s an easy way to make friends and divide from your high school group. You ll make friends even more so than just your particular house. You ll meet people during the recruitment and rush process and at Greek activities, such as socials and philanthropic events both in sororities and fraternities. If you re attending or planning to attend a larger school, it makes campus seem a lot smaller because you re included in the Greek community. Feeling like a small fish in the ocean can be pretty daunting, so making campus feel smaller can be quite comforting at times. In other words, modern Greek life is a little more different from Wright s and Whipple and Sullivan s times; the 19th century. The Modern Greek life has change quite tremendously; from the hazing policies, to the amount of alcohol intakes and partying. The Greek system on Stetson University is quite a Greek system alright. Getting the chance to speak with one of the Public Safety officers on campus, they have concluded that they made approximately five trips to the Greek houses for partying; being very low for a University frat party. Comparing the Greek life at Stetson to one of a HBCU s (Historically Black Colleges and University), Greek life will be extremely different. From the partying, to amount of alcohol intake, to the assaults and lastly the expulsion of a fraternity or sorority for hazing. Stetson University defined ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Biology of a Squid Essay Biology of a Squid Squids are among the most varied and unique of all invertebrates. They are mollusks of the Class Cephalopod, along with the nautilus, cuttlefish, and octopus. Squids are highly evolved, and have developed a number of traits uncommon to most other mollusks. Fossil records of cephalopods have dated back the Cambrian Period (about 600 million years ago). Structurally, squids have only small variations of a basic theme common to all cephalopods. They are spherical or cigar shaped with two fins used to stabilize movement when swimming. Ten arms are easily distinguished emerging from near the mouth Eight of these arms each have four rows of suction cups encircled by rings of chitinous (horny) hooks. These suction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Squids (and cephalopods in general) possess several unusual abilities that help them deal with their predators (which range anything from large fish to sperm whales). Their lack of an external shell allows them to squeeze into very tight places, enabling them to conveniently and easily hide from their enemies. When confronted with a dangerous animal away from hiding places, however, squids seem to have a disadvantage when compared to other mollusks with external shells. If attacked, they have no exterior protection. To counter this potential crisis, they have adapted a number of tactics. First, they are capable of temporarily altering the color of their skin, in effect camouflaging themselves. They can shift their appearance from a deep brown color, to a white, or almost transparent quality. Along with this, they are able to slightly change the texture of their skin. This form of camouflage allows the squid to take the form of rocks, seaweed, or other ocean dwelling objects. If a hazardous foe is not fooled by camouflage, the squid can release an ink cloud. The ink cloud has a number of helpful characteristics that can ward off enemies. The cloud initially causes the nearby water to become dark and cloudy, reducing the enemy s visibility and allowing the squid to escape from danger. Some deep sea squids contain bacteria in their ink so that the cloud glows, and scares away harmful rivals. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In answering this question it is necessary to define the terms deserve and great . For these purposes, to deserve will mean to be worthy of. Great has many meanings, and will be defined as: important; grand; distinguished; remarkable in ability or character; competent; or above what is normal, with implied admiration. Alexander had remarkable ability, and so was great in many different ways. On top of doing great things, Alexander was a great leader, and a political and military genius. His goal to conquer Persia was one that he would let nothing stand in the way of. As leader of his troops, he suffered their same wounds, being one of the last great leaders to personally take the risk of death in battle. Alexander listened to every man he had, and so became very close to his men. Some argue his ability in motivating and inspiring his men was in fact the greatest ever seen, half defeating the opposition in nerves before a battle began. He was also remarkable with military tactics, employing strategies still used today. As the Encarta Encyclopedia put it: Alexander was one of the greatest generals of all time, noted for his brilliance as a tactician and troop leader and for the rapidity with which he could traverse great expanses... He succeeded politically as well, earning respect from many people. Alexander s charisma and adoption of Persian customs gave him strong loyalty needed in order to control his massive empire. However, the greatness in his work here is questionable: often he used brutal force, sometimes killing thousands of civilians, or selling them into slavery. Three powerful men would rise to the occasion and answer the call. Everybody thought that the split of power was going to work out, but what they didn t know was it would lead to a civil war. An unstable Republic and a near civil war brought three men to set aside their differences and even contempt for one another to join forces and dominate the government of Rome, even controlling elections, for nearly a decade, (First 1). Caesar heard the news in Ravenna, and knew that he had to make a choice between prosecution and rebellion; preferring the dignity of war over the humiliation of a process, Caesar chose to rebel, quoting his favorite poet Menander, the die is cast. In the night of 10/11 January, the Thirteenth legion advanced to Rimini, where he could control the passes across the Apennines. In doing so, he crossed the river Rubico, thereby invading Italy and provoking the Second Civil War. However, it turned out that the Senate had made a disastrous mistake. It had believed that the issue was between a rebel and the legitimate rulers, and it had expected that the towns of Italy would send troops in defense of the authority of the Senate and the Roman People s liberties. Love and vengeance are two emotions that have an astounding level of control on us. However which is a stronger driving force remains questionable. Love without fear and spite is the most powerful human emotion; and still, it can be easy to slip back into an old way, a jealous rage, a resistance or belief that one isn t worthy. The distinctness of Draupadi s narrative stands with the fact that Draupadi s feministic retelling, which is somewhat a modern rendering fits into the plot of Mahabharata. Draupadi s story is more close to humanised rendering, her anger, resentment, and suppressed desire make her one like us. TO: American Public FROM: Schuyler Ream, PPD 225 Student DATE: 11/18/2015 SUBJECT: Recommendation on future policy for the 30% Solar Investment Tax Credit I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Created in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the 30% Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is the solar industry s most important and only public policy that supports the deployment of solar energy in the United States to both the residential and commercial sectors. The 30% ITC has been successful in increasing deployment and lowering costs of solar energy. Since the eight year extension created by the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, solar prices have consistently fallen year after year while installation rates and efficiencies have continued to rise, thus equaling the average cost of solar energy dropping by more than 73% and a 6500% annual growth rate since 2006, as reported by an independent analysis done by Bloomberg New Energy and Finance dated September 15, 2015, commissioned by the Solar Energy Industries Association. However, the ITC is set to expire December 31, 2016, and a failure to extend the ITC, according industry experts reported by PR Newswire July 22, 2015, would result in 90 percent of all solar companies going out of business and thousands of jobs lost . In response to the looming expiration date, Ari Natter, Bloomberg Energy Reporter, reports the solar industry is launching an all out push starting in 2015 to extend the investment tax credit . • 13. Physical Appearance Of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Kayla Caputo Ms. Schindler English IV 23 March 2015 Physical Appearance In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley shows that appearance does not represent internal character by the use of contrasting characters. Shelley uses the characters of the monster and Victor to show that looks don t determine your personality. Physical appearance is related to internal character due to the fact that people judge on looks before anything else. Social media, making people more concerned with their looks, has influenced the importance of appearance. Different studies show that people pick their friends and spouses based on appearance. Physical appearance is not an indicator of character, but still the acceptance of someone who looks different lies in the eyes of judgmental people. In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, physical appearance plays an immense role in the way characters are treated. Many would believe that a beautiful exterior represents a beautiful soul, but that is not the case. Victor creates a hideous monster that later becomes mistreated and judged solely on his appearance. The monster is never given a chance by anyone besides Mr. De Lacey to show his inner self. I am blind, and cannot judge of your countenance, but there is something in your words which persuades me that you are sincere (Shelley 120). Since De Lacey is blind, he does not have the power to judge the harmless monster on his appearance. He accepts the monster into his home, not running in terror from his harsh exterior. ... There are many different things we can use instead of testing on animals and killing them like for example we can use human cells or we can use dead humans but the person being researched on has to know and be okay with it just like a donor. According to Lussier and Achua (2010), leaders such as Ackermann are able to take swift and decisive action, even in the most difficult situations, and take calculated risks while persevering in the face of failure. Strong communication skills, self confidence, the ability to manage others and willingness to embrace change also characterize a successful leader. Ackermann has also been a member of the influential Washington based financial advisory body, the Group of Thirty and also served on other company boards, including Bayer AG, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Linde, Mannesman, and Siemens AG. • 28. Cochlear Implants In Children In today s society there is an ongoing debate of weather children who are deaf should receive cochlear implants. A cochlear implant is a device that takes sound wave and changes the waves into electrical activity for the brain to interpret. Wire called electrodes are surgically implanted into the cochlear nerve which receives a signal from the microphone attached to the transmitter and speech processor. The microphone captures the sound from the environment and the speech processor filters the noise versus speech. Then the transmitter sends an electrical signal through the electrodes to stimulate the cochlear nerve. Every person has a different thought depending on their experiences in their life whether deaf children should receive cochlear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Studies have shown that if a child receives a cochlear implant before the child is 18 months old followed by intensive therapy the child is likely to develop language skills that are comparable to their peers and many children are able to attend mainstream schooling. This sounds great to parents, but what happens when the cochlear implant doesn t work or if the child doesn t receive the necessary therapy for understanding sound using the cochlear implant. Because the children were not exposed to American sign language (ASL) this can delay the children education and learning compared to their peers. When children are born to hearing parents they want the child to be like them and be able to hear. To the hearing, deafness is a disability and if there is a way that they can make their child hear, most parents will do everything in their power to make sure they can give that to their child. Then again, many parents forget is that living with a cochlear implant is a lifelong process and involves years to decades of therapy for their child. And if a child receives the implant later than 18 months old it becomes harder for the child to understand speech from a cochlear implant and more intensive therapy for the child. Children start learning language from their parents listening to them talk to others and talk to the baby. If the child is deaf, they are missing this important development of speech, which makes it harder for the child to learn to speak and understanding language. Also, most hearing parents don t know ASL or sign fluently to be able to teach their children the language and help them to start learning and be able to communicate with society. Today there are still parents that will not learn ASL even though their child is deaf or maybe they received a cochlear implant and it didn t work. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. John Dewey on Education John Dewey focuses on what he considers as the audacity of imagination being one of the most vocal theorists on education and the related policies. He defines education as a process of instruction, whereby it is unified by encouraging good. His theory of inquiry concentrates on the evolution of the human race with respect to their surroundings. In addition, Dewy adopted the theory of evolution initiated by Charles Darwin. Hence he is of the view that organisms in respect to their surroundings evolve due to the need to survive since their natural environments determine the causes of action as well as the behaviour. Dewey used what is considered as pragmatism, whereby the students are expected to learn from hands on approach (Dewey, 1966). This is executed by individual experiences in the classrooms as well as in non classroom settings. He believed that students are tasked with learning for the individual process, as life is the best learning process and environment for accruing essential knowledge. In addition, he believed that education could be attained through psychology, which was a good basis for learning and accrual of an excellent education. Dewey distinguishes three phases of education and learning processes. He identifies that the process of learning is instigated by what is considered as a problematic situation (Dewey, 1966). This situation is defined by an individual who has instinctive or habitual responses as a part of the human cognitive functions, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
