The Big Sleep- the Depiction of Marlowe as a Modern-Day...
The Big Sleep The depiction of Marlowe as a modern day knight
The novel The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler was published in 1939 during the heart of the Great
Depression. The novel is written in a very sinister, dark and kind of a gangster tone and carries much
of the cynicism of 1930s America. The Big Sleep is a story of intrigue, corruption, delinquency and
obliquity with a rather complex plot which can be very confusing. The main character in the Big Sleep
is the private detective Philip Marlow who is very masculine man with values and a good moral. His
strong moral is often evidenced throughout the novel. Marlowe is the only one in this complex world
who cannot be corrupted because the other characters are all described as sleazy, ... Show more

There is another passage where he is looking down at a chess board saying: I looked down at the chess
board. The move with the knight was wrong. I put it back where I have moved it from. Knights had no
meaning in this game (95). It is clear that he depicts himself as the knight and he is referring to his
cold case and the mistakes he has made so far in solving the crime. The sentence knights had no
meaning in this game refers to his chivalrous behavior and that this has not been helpful so far in
solving the crime and that frustrates him. Furthermore, his behavior has no meaning or value for the
other characters that are included in this crime and he is instantly reminded that he is the only one in
this game who is faithful and morally. However, the description of chivalry is not only portrayed
through the imagery in the novel but moreover through the behavior of Philip Marlowe. For hundreds
of years, the knight is one of the most fascinating figures or motives of the history which has not lost
his symbolic brightness and power. If one is looking for a definition of a knight it always includes
certain terms like strong, noble, chivalrous, morally straight or protector of the weak as well as the
existence of a certain code. According to this code it is the duty of a knight to protect women, children
and to have faithfulness. This is exactly the behavior that Marlowe displays throughout the novel.
Within the novel there are several passages and examples

Comparing Roman and Greek Art Essay example
Comparing Roman and Greek Art
Throughout history art has consistently reflected the cultural values and social structures of individual
civilizations. Ancient art serves as a useful tool to help historians decipher some important aspects of
ancient culture. From art we can determine the basic moral and philosophical beliefs of many ancient
societies. The differences in arts purpose in Greece and Rome, for example, show us the fundamental
differences in each culture s political and moral system. The primary objective of Greek art was to
explore the order of nature and to convey philosophical thought, while Roman art was used primarily
as a medium to project the authority and importance of the current ruler and the greatness of ... Show

The Protogeometric and Geometric periods are good examples of such advanced thinking. The
beginnings of the Protogeometric period display a distinct interest in mathematical order. During this
period, artists decorated vases with circles and symmetrical patterns. As the dominant style changed
from Protogeometric to Geometric, this order and precision was amplified. The popular ?circle and
semicircle patterns were replaced by linear designs, zigzags, triangles, diamonds, and meanders?
(Cunningham, 40). The increased interest in order seems to have been a reflection of the Greek
fascination with nature, and man?s relationship to nature.
This interest in the order of nature eventually evolved into a fascination with the human form and the
idea of human perfection. The way in which the perfect human form was portrayed by Greek artists
was of a highly intellectual nature. The early sculptors of the period explored basic human anatomy
and its aesthetic value, creating such sculptures as the Kritios Boy, of the Acropolis. The precision and
realism of this sculpture captured a more accurate portrayal of the human form than ever before seen.
This accomplishment in itself showed strong advancements in intellectual thought, and inspired future
generations to further explore aesthetic and order. Artist such as Polyclitius later envisioned human
perfection as a series of mathematical proportions. The

Divorce Court Cases
One of the earliest examples of divorce was in Massachusetts Bay. When it was a colony, the people
had created a small judicial group that specifically dealt with divorce matters in 1629. This legislative
group was allowed to grant divorces on the grounds of adultery, desertion, bigamy (being married to
multiple people), and impotence (a man s inability to have sexual intercourse). In the northern
colonies, they tried to make divorce available to the people. However, southern colonies, due to their
more conservative views, tried to prevent the act of divorce, even if they had the same legislation (The
History of Divorce Law in the USA, 2014). Many of the American states had divorce legislation after
gaining Independence from Great Britain, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
California was the first to adopt the law in 1969 and later on, other states (Iowa being the second) did
too (The History of Divorce Law in the USA, 2014). Over the years, divorce has increased as the
stigma against it has started to decrease since the 1800s. Divorce rates went from less than 3% to
about 7% from the late 1800s to the late 1960s. Before 1867, divorce statistics were not recorded.
While there was a large amount of dishonor attached to divorce in the 1800s, divorce still happened
every once in a while. One of the influences on divorce statistics at the time was that women outside
of marriage didn t have the same economic opportunities that men had. While divorce rates still weren
t that high compared to later on, divorce began to slowly increase. Divorce rates during the 1900s
were still low because you couldn t acquire a divorce without proving abuse, adultery, or
abandonment. Divorce continued to rise at a steady pace, significantly increasing in the 1970s. This
was because no fault divorce had just been made available and people could now file without the
hassle of having to prove something had caused the marriage to fall

Bladder Cancer
BLADDER CANCER Bladder cancer is the growth of malignant cells in the urinary bladder. Most
forms of bladder cancer start in the superficial layer of the transitional epithelium, and most often
affect the transitional cells. It may also be called transitional cell carcinoma or even urothelial
carcinoma. Urothelial carcinoma is also a term used for transitional cell cancer in the renal pelvis,
ureters, and urethra. Bladder cancer is a relatively common disease. It is the fourth leading cancer
among men (following prostate, lung, colorectal cancers), and the tenth leading cancer among women;
occurring in men about three times more often than women. Like most types of cancer, bladder cancer
usually involves epithelial cells, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Urine flow may be routed out of the body through a stoma, or a variety of surgeries have been
developed to form artificial bladders from parts of the large or small intestine. In addition to surgery,
radiation and chemotherapy may be used in the battle against bladder cancer. More than 70% of
bladder cancer diagnoses are made when the cells affect only superficial layers of tissue. Of course,
this is excellent news because the survival rate for cancers caught early is much better than for cancers
caught in stage three or later. Even so, bladder cancer has an unusual habit of growing in several
places at once, so although it may be possible to catch one or two tumors, any invisible third, fourth,
and fifth tumors may not become symptomatic for another several months. This means that the
reoccurrence rate for bladder cancer is surprisingly high; up to 80% percent of bladder cancer patients
have at least one reoccurrence. The relation between bladder cancer and carcinogenic substances is
one of the most clearly demonstrated links between environmental exposures and cancer. The good
news is the bladder cancer is probably a completely preventable disease, if exposure to the
carcinogenic substances is limited or eradicated. References

Introduction
The issues in the case of Hawthorn Blood Supplies Co Ltd , which is a listed company on Australian
Securities Exchange (ASX), are concerned protection of shareholder s and creditor s interests. We will
identify possible legal issues in the relation to the Corporation Act 2001 and discuss whether they
have been any breaches of relevant common law rules and statutory provisions in relation to capital
maintenance , share buy backs , financial assistance and payment of dividends . We will also briefly
discuss particular relevance of section 588G in relation to Roger.

Section 260A(1)(a) permits a company to give financial assistance provided that the assistance does
not materially prejudice either the company, its shareholders or the company s ability to pay its
creditors (Ciro 2009).
In the case of Hawthorn Blood Supplies Co Ltd, Roger convinces other directors to give him a $10
million loan. Roger uses his company to use some of the loan money to buy shares in Hawthorn Blood
Supplies Co Ltd to boost its share price and then sell it. By giving Roger this loan Hawthorn Blood
Supplies Co Ltd will subsequently reduce its capital and put shareholder s and creditors at risk. This
would breach s260A1 (a). Section 260A(1)(b) permits a company to give financial assistance even if
this would materially prejudice the interests of the company or its ability to pay its creditors, provided
that the assistance is approved by shareholders pursuant to s260B. This procedure is very similar
approval for selective capital reductions and selective share buy backs. In our case the board of
directors has failed to get shareholders approval when they decided to lend Roger $10 million. There
is clearly a breach of s260A(1)(b) and a possible breach of conflict of interests.
Relevance of section 588G
A director has a duty to prevent a company from trading whilst insolvent. A company is insolvent if it
cannot pay all its debts as and when they

No matter how many years you have kept them, they WILL sting you! Bees, like many other insects
and even animals are quite protective of their territories and their honey. So you will most definitely
need protective gear even if you are a seasoned beekeeper. A beekeeper hat is therefore one of the
most important part of that gear. The moment you think of protection against the stings, the hat should
be your first thought. A beekeeper hat is a specially designed hat that ensures you are kept safe of the

Plastic hats for instance are quite effective in terms of the clarity whilst looking through them but at
the same time they can make you feel stuffed up in there because of the ventilation system. The best
types are the ones attached together with a veil that is at least shoulder long. The mesh should be tight
enough to not allow the bees to slip through the holes. The beekeeper hat as is with other protective
clothing should be white in color. Bees don t consider the white color as a threat. However, just show

For some reason, they do not like the color white and will get distracted and not see you as an enemy

Terracotta Etruscan Vase Analysis
I saw a terracotta Etruscan vase at the Walters Museum, on November 4, 2015. Created by Micali
Painter, it stands 16¾ high and has a circumference of 10¼, excavated between 500 490, BCE in
Cerveteri, Italy. The museum provenance for the container states that it was purchased in 1902 by
Henry Walters from the Don Marcello Massarenti Collection in Rome ( Black Walters). A close look
at the vase reveals unclothed, energetically running satyrs. Above them, birds face in the opposite
direction, closer to the neck of the vessel. The wild satyrs with their powerful physique caught my
imagination and attention. The amphora was created in the Archaic Period, historians use the term

Their use caused them to be indispensable, and their presence desired along with Greek imports. We
can form an idea of the main differences between Greek and Etruscan vases. Greek images are used
for their narrative qualities and symbolism; the erotic pleasures of mortal life and a prospect of eternal
feasting in the afterlife. Etruscan paintings conveyed a clear sense of an exuberant enjoyment of life,
with dancing couples and other human characters looking strong, healthy and filled with life. The art
captured human emotion much better than the more stylized Greek art. During the 4th and 5th
centuries BCE, Greek fleets began to plunder the coastal cities, the Gaul s overtook the Po Valley, and
without unity among the citizens, the Etruscans were overwhelmed. Extensive sculpture and artwork
were destroyed when around 396 BCE, Etruscans were overcome by the Romans and absorbed into
the empire ( Etruscan Collins). The short time period when the culture survived independently, they
created amphora that was magnificent in style, in my opinion, and vital in its use. The symmetry of the
handles suggests the stability of the symmetrical piece. While gazing at the item, I realized that this
ancient and delicate artifact is in remarkable condition. To imagine all of the individuals that utilized
the amphora in some way, and its travels throughout its life during the last 2500 years, is a journey I

Naturalism In Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau lives by an ideology of minimalism and simplicity, conveniences of his era are
gratuitous for a life of prosperity. He entered the woods to explore life living deliberately and to tread
a road of existential self actualization. Thoreau is a transcendentalist so it is only expected that he does
not align with centralized authority through religion and government which leads to the the overall
theme of naturalism and self reliancy. Essentially the theme thoreau advocates is that a simplistic
lifestyle allows one to live freely and wholly without the binds of tyranny and modern conveniences.
Within Henry David Thoreau s passage, probably the most conspicuous example of Thoreau s theme
of minimalism and transcendentalism is when he states, Our life is frittered away by detail. An honest
man has hardly need to count more than his ten fingers, or in extreme cases he may add his ten toes,
and lump the rest. Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! (Thoreau 6) Essentially Thoreau advocates an
honest man has no need for even the slightest of complexity in life and that a suspended state of
ignorance from what is deemed as extraneous details is bliss. In this quote the word honest is a strong
piece of rhetoric that exclaims that honesty and morality is primarily attained through simplicity and
not through gluttony in curiosity. This connects back to my theme that thoreau advocates that a man
can live virtuously only with simplicity, hence, Shams and delusions are esteemed for soundest truths,
while reality is fabulous. If men would steadily observe realities only, and not allow themselves to be
deluded, life, therefore of delusions created by this superfluous reality is responsible for the many of
the problems we have in modern society.
Thoreau once again exclaims that complexities in life are extraneous when he states, Still we live
meanly, like ants; though the fable tells us that we were long ago changed into men; like pygmies we
fight with cranes; it is error upon error, and clout upon clout, and our best virtue has for its occasion a
superfluous and evitable wretchedness. (Thoreau 6) like ants; though the fable tells us, our lives are
comparable to the regimented lifestyle of ants

Descartes s Meditations On First Philosophy
We Think, Therefore We Are Throughout history man has always wanted to understand themselves,
and to understand others. Humans have this innate wondering, this curiosity, as to what makes us who
we are. What is it inside of us that allows us to exist? Sometimes the answer is as simple as looking
inwards, or as René Descartes would call it, meditation. These meditations are moments of reflection,
time spent with one s thoughts, and time to figure out where one is placed within the world. During
one of these meditations, Descartes creates the phrase, cogito ergo sum , I think, therefore I am, in his
monumental book, Principles of Philosophy, though it was written in another form earlier, ego sum,
ego existo , I am, I exist, in his book Meditations on First Philosophy. This phrase, put so eloquently,
means that because Descartes is able to think, because he is able to ponder his own existence, he
therefore, exists. Descartes is correct in saying that his self exists because he can think, and ponder his
existence. Descartes use of, cogito ergo sum addresses the issue of doubt in the world, and how to deal
with our own existence because of this. We, as humans, have an underlying desire to understand
reality, and to know what is, and what isn t. For example, dreams can be perceived as being reality, as
they carry all the necessary attributes for living. Inside of a dream we walk, we can eat, we can have
different sensations, though, once awake it is obvious that none

Tourette s Syndrome Case Study
DESCRIPTION
Tourette s Syndrome, often shortened to TS, is an inherited neurological disorder. Although the cause
is unknown, studies suggest that it occurs when the nerves in the brain have trouble communicating
and when there is a disturbance in the balance of neurotransmitters.
It is characterized by repetitive, sudden, and involuntary movements or noises called tics. The tics can
be both motorized and vocalized. Motor tics are body movements that can be simple, such as rapid eye
blinking, shoulder shrugging, or nose twitching or complex, such as jumping, kicking, hopping, and
spinning. Simple vocal tics include grunting, sniffing, and throat clearing, while complex vocal tics
include repeating the words of others or repeating one s own words (ghr.nlm.nih.gov). About 10% of
those diagnosed with TS have coprolalia, usage of obscene language, and copropraxia, making
obscene movements. The syndrome does not directly affect a person s intelligence, as they function
normally besides the tics, unless there is another co existing disorder. ... Show more content on

To be diagnosed with TS, a patient must have two or more motor tics and at least one vocal tic. The
tics must have begun before the patient has reached 18 years of age and have occurred for at least a
year. Opposingly, Chronic Motor or Vocal Tic Disorder may be diagnosed if the patient has one or
more motor tics or vocal tics, but not both that have been persistent for over a year and has not been
diagnosed with TS. In the case of Provisional Tic Disorder, the patient has symptoms identical to
Chronic Motor or Vocal Tic Disorder, aside from the fact that the tics have not been present for longer

The Back to the future trilogy is by far my favorite of all time; especially the first one, that movie
alone is on my Mount Rushmore of movies. The trilogy is about a teenager who accidently travels

now he has to figure out a way to get back to the future and get his parents back together. The entire
trilogy is great; even thought it has its bad moments, but hey, what trilogy does not? The series is a

Global Warming is a Hoax Essay
The essay opens up with McKibben talking about how the political campaign against global warming
is flawed because at our current point there is nothing much that can be done to fix it.(Mckibben,1) He
then goes to state that humans are the biggest culprit behind global warming and supports this by
giving examples such as SUVs and American ignorance.(2,9) He concludes by saying that if ten

government s attention to pass laws making everyone go green. (11)

Rising water temperatures actually have beneficial effects on coral. It is like leaving a plant in the sun.
I watched a documentary where the famous marine biologist, Jean Michel Cousteau, talks about the
Great Barrier Reef and how temperature affects it. Normally it sits comfortably between 85 to 74
degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures lower than 70 can cause the coral to turn white and die. However,
after the existing coral dies, new coral grows on top of it and the cycle starts again. Aside from this
this, coral has been known to adapt to survive in waters where the temperature can get below 60 or
rise above 90. So the coral population is in no real danger.
Another point he makes is that Polar bears are getting scrawnier because the seal habitat has declined
because global warming causes the ice to melt. This is false. A common fact global warming
supporters forget to mention is that arctic and Antarctic snowfall replenish the ice each year. Polar
bears and seals are more in danger of poaching than losing their habitat to global warming. Both
species are on the endangered list. However, weighing anywhere between 775 to 1,200 pounds. Polar

The Types Of Bone Tissue
Bone tissue is a connective tissue with an abundant matrix of intercellular substances that encloses
widely separated cells. The bone matrix is made up of an inorganic component known as mineral salts
that hardens the bone, and an inorganic component collagen fibres and an amorphous mixture called
ground substance, which gives the bone its strength (Tortora, Grabowski 2001). There are three types
of cells that can be found in the bone, they are osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes. Osteoblasts are
the cells that synthesizes a specialized organic material called osteoid which is important in the build
up of mineralized bone, osteoclasts are relatively larger multi nucleate cells made up of mitochondria
and lysosomes that are responsible for the continuous erosion of bones. Lastly the last cells found in
the bone are osteocytes, these are adult osteoblast cells found in the lacunae that have been surrounded
by mineralized matrix. (Thibodeau, Patton 2003).Osteocytes are responsible for maintaining
metabolism within the bone such as the exchange of nutrients with the blood.
There are four types of bones short bones, long bones, flat bones and irregular bones, which have
different characteristics so at to be able to function effectively. Long bones are greater in length than
width and is made up of varying numbers of ends and a shaft, an example is the humerus which is
located in the arm. Short (sesamond) bones are almost as broad as they are long, such bones can be

The Coward s way A Sound of Thunder (Ray Bradbury) and The Lottery (Shirley Jackson) are both
connected through a specific quality that characters in both stories contain. That quality is the inability
to make good decisions. When faced with alarming or stressful situations, Eckels, Travis, and the
townsfolk in the lottery, make bad decisions. The townsfolk blunder through their life, blindly
following the unjust tradition to stone someone to death each year. Eckels and Travis are both
cowards, and cowards tend to make bad decisions because they are selfish. Both stories are connected
by these cowardly people that make bad decisions. The lottery townsfolk are put under pressure by not
a person, but by tradition. Tradition makes them scared, and fear blinds people. Traditions can have
many beginnings, but ones such as this, with no positive result, are simply a terrible decision.
However, the townsfolk believe in tradition, and this pressures them into going along with this
horrible idea. When Mrs. Hutchinson is chosen, she also makes a bad decision. Fear can cause denial,
which, in Mrs. Hutchinson s case, can lead to your death. Instead of turning tail and running from her
fate, she stands and lets the other townsfolk surround her, simply saying, It isn t fair, it isn t right, (The

Kevin s Heart Analysis
J.Cole : K.O.D Kevin s Heart J.Cole just recently released his new album K.O.D which conveys his
emotions through his real life experiences. In Kevins Heart he accurately paint pictures and makes the
listeners feel his emotions by his natural play on words. The song Kevin s Heart portrays the message
that he doesn t need another lover in his life because he already has the woman of his
dreams.Although temptation is lurking in his life.He tries so hard to make things right, but at the end
of the day he is only human and needs to learn from his mistakes. Kevin s Heart is very lyrical in

J.Cole is implying that he s already has the love of his life . No one could possibly replace, but when
he is called upon by other possible lovers he hesitates to decline.J.Cole was probably trying to say that

is on a constant loop and almost the same throughout the whole song which indicates a rap song. In
Kevin s Heart J.Cole is very rhythmic and constantly is switching between his faster paced rap and his
calm, soft singing voice. In this line If I take this cookie now one day I ll do the time.....Slip me a

Of Captain Misson And His Crew By Daniel Defoe Summary
Daniel Defoe has been acknowledged as the author of A General History Of The Pyrates , published in
1728, throughout the centuries of the early modern period. Being pursued as Captain Charles Johnson,
the author seemingly imitates a false characterization in order to portray a different perspective to the
commentary on the life of Of Captain Misson and His Crew . Defoe introduced this volume of fiction,
among many chapters, seeking the inequality and insincerity of the english society attributing to the
commission of piracy throughout the population. He familiarizes his passages in mostly, different
narratives as he describes a quite peculiar and distinctive acknowledgement implied to the proper
intentions of a well known captain pirate. On the contrary, most argued that piracy had different

Rediker agues that piracy lured certain economical crimes that brought the english civilization to a
disadvantage through the violation of respected authority. Over social relations and apprehensions, he
describes the act of piracy as a distress to the community since the piratical act appointed their crimes
as terrorizing which seemingly opposed to a utopian nature. This essay will discuss both point of
views according to these specific authors while assessing the commentary of governmental and
custom issues during the act of piracy in the Early Modern Period.
Defoe introduces a particularly new statement according to the law of piracy during the 18th century.
Through the illustrations of Captain Charles Johnson, Captain Misson was emphasized throughout the
book regarding the idealization of the colony known as Libertalia. The government on Misson s ship
followed with Libertalia s territory, was mostly known to the crew as the pirate code . This indicated
that pirates would assemble their own set of rules regarding booty and also contribute to the

The Industrial Revolution And Its Impact On Society
Do you ever look around in our busy everyday life full of car rides, texting, internet, high speed travel,
etc. and wonder how and when we made the jump from horse drawn carriages to modern day life? The
Industrial Revolution is one of the greatest and most impactful time in our nation s history that made
all of these changes come to life and impacted not just the people who lived during the time, but even
the life we re living today. The Industrial Revolution created many new types of industries, businesses,
and products that changed the consumer culture of the time along with society as a whole. This not
only includes society from that time period but for modern day life as well. The Industrial Revolution
started in Europe and it really took off in Britain in the early 1700 s. Prior to the revolution people
lived in small rural town and most life revolved around farming or very low income jobs. Many
people made their own cloths, built their own tools, made there own furniture, and produced their own
food. The Industrial Revolution was the movent that changed this way of life and made it so the rural
lifestyle wasn t the main way of living anymore. Britain was the ideal society to start off the Industrial
Revolution because they had a politically strong economy at the time, and they sat on huge deposits of
iron and coal which was a great influence on the Revolution and its needs. Eventually this Revolution
made its way to the United States. During the time of the 19th

The Chinese Room Argument Essay
John Searle formulated the Chinese Room Argument in the early 80 s as an attempt to prove that
computers are not cognitive operating systems. In short though the immergence of artificial and
computational systems has rapidly increased the infinite possibility of knowledge, Searle uses the
Chinese room argument to shown that computers are not cognitively independent. John Searle
developed two areas of thought concerning the independent cognition of computers. These ideas
included the definition of a weak AI and a strong AI. In essence, these two types of AI have their
fundamental differences. The weak AI was defined as a system, which simply were systems that

The assumption is that the person is capable of understanding Chinese, simply because he can manage
to assemble a set of answers to questions that would be indistiquishable from a person who speaks
Chinese. The problem is that the person in the room does not understand any of the answers, but is
simply following instructions. Searle utilizes a system s ability to pass the Turing test as a parameter
in the study, though the person would still indeed not understand Chinese. Searle proceeds to refute
the claims of strong AI one at a time, by positioning himself as the one who manipulates the Chinese
symbols. The first claim is that a system, which can pass the Turing test, understands the input and
output. Searle replies that as the computer in the Chinese room, he gains no understanding of Chinese
by simply manipulating the symbols according to the formal program, in this case being the complex
rules. (Searle, 1980) It was not necessary for the operator to have any understanding of what the
interviewer is asking, or the replies that produced. He may not even know that there is a question and
answer session going on outside the room. The second claim of strong AI, which Searle objects to, is
the claim that the system explains human understanding. Searle asserts that since the system is
functioning, in this case passing the Turing Test, (Brigeman, 1980) there

`` Animal Liberation `` By Richard Ryder
To start with, The term Animal Rights did not emerge until the late 1970 s, according to Encyclopedia
Britannica. In Particular, Richard Ryder, a British Psychologist, expressed his boldest ideas, but in
order to get his word out around the world he needed assistance from one of the top Australian
philosophers, Peter Singer. Singer published numerous of notable books such as Animal liberation
which described in vivid detail, the grueling agony animals had to suffer. In fact, Pete Singer got his
inspiration for his book Animal liberation from his view on utilitarianism, the belief that a morally

Los Angeles Riots In Twilight By Anne Deavere Smith
According to Karl Marx s Theory, taken from his Communist Manifesto the struggles between the
upper class and the lower classes will eventually lead towards civil riots and possible even a
revolution. While Aristotle s Theory in Poetics argued that social change is inevitable and a means to
an end . The book Twilight : 1992 by Anne Deavere Smith exemplifies these ideas through the use of
multiple perspectives from individuals who witnessed, participated or in someway were affected by
the Los Angeles Riots of 1992, which she personally interviewed. On April 29, 1992 the areas of
South Central Los Angeles and the surrounding Cities became a war zone, with businesses being

their lives in the five day rebellion that injured 2,383; caused over 600 fires; led to the arrest of 15,000
people; and at least $785 million in property damage breaking all previous records for American civil

Polytetrafluoroethylene
Polymers have been changing the way we live for over 100 years. Their availability and diverse
qualities ensure that they are always in high demand, and new polymers are always being discovered.
Where does this leave the now commonplace polymers which once were ubiquitous in commerce?
Polymers such as polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride (Bakelite) and polytetrafluoroethylene
(PTFE) were first synthesised in 1907 and 1938 respectively, making them old by polymer standards.
Although the original polymer applications are now redundant, they have found uses in new areas of
society. This dynamic aspect of polymers is due to their unique structure. Polymers are created from
many small molecules (or monomers) reacting with each other, and arranging ... Show more content

It was discovered in the 60s that a reaction between PTFE and magnesium produced a violent and
exothermic reaction. This occurred because magnesium is a highly reactive metal, which when
burned, gives of an intense, white light. (S.I.F., 2013) In addition, magnesium emits infrared when
burned, making it ideal for military use as a decoy flare. However, magnesium requires an oxidiser a
material that takes electrons from the fuel allowing the reaction to take place. This is why flares are
made of PTFE and magnesium, as it is the fluorine in PTFE that allows the reaction to take place.
Fluorine is a proficient oxidiser, more so than oxygen, as it contains more gaps for valence electrons,
allowing the reaction to obtain a higher temperature of combustion. Figure 6 shows magnesium s
preference for reacting with the fluorine in teflon over oxygen to form MgF2(l), a discovery made in
an experiment undertaken by L.V. de Yong and K.J. Smit in

Fires of Jubilee- Nat Turner s Fierce Rebellion
Amber Laughlin Professor T. Rioux February 18, 2013 Fires of Jubilee Exam Nat s Rebellion August
21, 1861 proved to be a day of sorrow, pain and lessons learned. The Fires of Jubilee is a historical
account of the events that led to the bloodiest slave rebellion in southern history. Nat Turner is painted
as a fairly intelligent and prophetic slave who believed he was chosen to free his people from their
slave bondage. Nat s rebellion last almost two whole days before being halted by militia men from the
state of North Carolina, leaving upwards of 50 whites murdered in the aftermath. Although it took
some time to fully accomplish, the rebellion of Nat Turner ultimately led to the freeing of the slaves
some years later. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of Nat s visions gave him the final push he needed to bring the plan into full swing. At one point,
a black spot appeared on the surface of the sun, for Nat this symbolized a black hand over the sun.
This was his sign that God wanted him to rise up against his white enemies. Jehovah was commanding
Nat to rise and move. Nat s trusted generals stayed by his side as this revolt happened without
warning. The violence raged on for more than twenty four hours. Many were left dead and
dismembered in the aftermath. The consequences of the rebellion were very well known in the state
and county. Immediate consequences were obviously the lost lives of the fifty something whites.
Many other slaves lost their lives as the militia began to fight and shut down Nat s group. The entire
county and state was on alert for any suspicious activity coming from any slaves. There was no way to
tell if this was just the beginning or the ending. Rumors spread quickly throughout the state that Nat s
rebellion was only the beginning and that many other slaves outside of his county were planning to
revolt as well. These rumors proved to not be true, but because the residents of the state were on high
alert, many innocent, free blacks and slaves were killed simply for being suspicious. There were trials
and hangings publicly in Virginia and North Carolina. The lives lost due to this rebellion went far
beyond the men and women killed on the first two days by Nat and his crew.

Data, Information, And Knowledge And How They Are...
Students Name: Marsil Hana
1. Describe the terms Data, Information, and Knowledge and how they are related to each other.
Data: is a collection of facts and studies, it can be thought of as a description of the world. For
example, when I say I have brown hair, hazel eyes and live in Chicago, those are all data.
Information: information is much more refined data, because it evolved to the point where it can be
useful and helpful to study a certain case or form of analysis.
Knowledge: it is basically what we know, maybe insights and facts that we ve learned in our life, or
some experience that we applied to data and information.
In my opinion, they are related to each other because everything started from facts and our knowledge
on specific topics and facts, and it all evolved to information and helpful data.
2. Describe 5 components of the database system and why they are important part of the system?
1 Data: it s very important because most companies and organizations generate, store and process
large amounts of data.
2 Hardware: it s also an important component because we store our data in the storage devices like
CD, DVD, floppy disk, and all the important parts like the processor and memory.
3 Software: it consists the DBMS that acts as a bridge between the user and DB. It also interacts with
the user through application and programs.
4 People: users are the human beings that need the data and information to help them with their daily
lives and work by interacting

The Book Thief Literary Analysis
I guess humans like to watch a little destruction. Sand castles, houses of cards, that s where they
begin. Their great skill is their capacity to escalate (109) quotes Death, right before the bonfire of
banned books is lit. The novel The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, is filled with pages of destruction
and mortality. Although it is unclear what Death, the narrator really is, he is mostly portrayed as an
immortal human who shares the same feelings as we do. During the reign of Nazi Germany, Death is
occupied picking up souls of soldiers and Jews. To distract himself, Death describes the vivid colors
he sees during one s death. He is troubled by the way humans destroy one another because in the end
we all die. Death finds peace in telling the story of Liesel Meminger, an adopted girl who helps her
family hide a Jew in their basement. Liesel steals books and understands the power of language at the
time of Nazi propaganda. When Himmel street is bombed and Liesels life is changed forever, Death
takes the autobiography that Liesel was editing. He then narrates the story of Liesel along with the
events of both destruction and mortality taking place in the rest of the world. That s the sort of ...

The Decision Struck Down A Statute
In 1976, by a 7 2 decision, the Court adopted an intermediate level of review for gender classifications
in the case Craig v. Boren. The decision struck down a statute that allowed women over the age of
eighteen to purchase beer but only men over the age of twenty one. Using this intermediate scrutiny,
the Court has invalidated gender segregation across the board. However, while this heightened level of
scrutiny has drastically helped women, it has not been equal in its effect on men. Since Craig, the
Court has upheld a requirement that only men register for the draft (Rostker v. Goldberg) and a
statutory rape law where only adult men were punished for having sex with an underage individual of
the opposite sex (Michael M. v. Superior Court). While these cases occurred in the 80s, this trend of
favoring women over men in gender discrimination cases has continued, especially in regards to
administrative law and protection. Recent Supreme Court cases reveal that men are still being
unfavorably ruled against over women, leading one to believe a push for strict scrutiny is key in
bridging that gap and implementing a federal statute that all States must obey in order to ensure
gender equality is achieved on both sides of the spectrum.
Beginning in the 70s, even before the decision of Craig, one is able to notice a trend of men seeming
to fail where women have strived in court. A notable case is Frontiero v. Richardson which involved a
lieutenant of the United States Air Force

  • 2. The Big Sleep- the Depiction of Marlowe as a Modern-Day... The Big Sleep The depiction of Marlowe as a modern day knight The novel The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler was published in 1939 during the heart of the Great Depression. The novel is written in a very sinister, dark and kind of a gangster tone and carries much of the cynicism of 1930s America. The Big Sleep is a story of intrigue, corruption, delinquency and obliquity with a rather complex plot which can be very confusing. The main character in the Big Sleep is the private detective Philip Marlow who is very masculine man with values and a good moral. His strong moral is often evidenced throughout the novel. Marlowe is the only one in this complex world who cannot be corrupted because the other characters are all described as sleazy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is another passage where he is looking down at a chess board saying: I looked down at the chess board. The move with the knight was wrong. I put it back where I have moved it from. Knights had no meaning in this game (95). It is clear that he depicts himself as the knight and he is referring to his cold case and the mistakes he has made so far in solving the crime. The sentence knights had no meaning in this game refers to his chivalrous behavior and that this has not been helpful so far in solving the crime and that frustrates him. Furthermore, his behavior has no meaning or value for the other characters that are included in this crime and he is instantly reminded that he is the only one in this game who is faithful and morally. However, the description of chivalry is not only portrayed through the imagery in the novel but moreover through the behavior of Philip Marlowe. For hundreds of years, the knight is one of the most fascinating figures or motives of the history which has not lost his symbolic brightness and power. If one is looking for a definition of a knight it always includes certain terms like strong, noble, chivalrous, morally straight or protector of the weak as well as the existence of a certain code. According to this code it is the duty of a knight to protect women, children and to have faithfulness. This is exactly the behavior that Marlowe displays throughout the novel. Within the novel there are several passages and examples ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Comparing Roman and Greek Art Essay example Comparing Roman and Greek Art Throughout history art has consistently reflected the cultural values and social structures of individual civilizations. Ancient art serves as a useful tool to help historians decipher some important aspects of ancient culture. From art we can determine the basic moral and philosophical beliefs of many ancient societies. The differences in arts purpose in Greece and Rome, for example, show us the fundamental differences in each culture s political and moral system. The primary objective of Greek art was to explore the order of nature and to convey philosophical thought, while Roman art was used primarily as a medium to project the authority and importance of the current ruler and the greatness of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Protogeometric and Geometric periods are good examples of such advanced thinking. The beginnings of the Protogeometric period display a distinct interest in mathematical order. During this period, artists decorated vases with circles and symmetrical patterns. As the dominant style changed from Protogeometric to Geometric, this order and precision was amplified. The popular ?circle and semicircle patterns were replaced by linear designs, zigzags, triangles, diamonds, and meanders? (Cunningham, 40). The increased interest in order seems to have been a reflection of the Greek fascination with nature, and man?s relationship to nature. This interest in the order of nature eventually evolved into a fascination with the human form and the idea of human perfection. The way in which the perfect human form was portrayed by Greek artists was of a highly intellectual nature. The early sculptors of the period explored basic human anatomy and its aesthetic value, creating such sculptures as the Kritios Boy, of the Acropolis. The precision and realism of this sculpture captured a more accurate portrayal of the human form than ever before seen. This accomplishment in itself showed strong advancements in intellectual thought, and inspired future generations to further explore aesthetic and order. Artist such as Polyclitius later envisioned human perfection as a series of mathematical proportions. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Divorce Court Cases One of the earliest examples of divorce was in Massachusetts Bay. When it was a colony, the people had created a small judicial group that specifically dealt with divorce matters in 1629. This legislative group was allowed to grant divorces on the grounds of adultery, desertion, bigamy (being married to multiple people), and impotence (a man s inability to have sexual intercourse). In the northern colonies, they tried to make divorce available to the people. However, southern colonies, due to their more conservative views, tried to prevent the act of divorce, even if they had the same legislation (The History of Divorce Law in the USA, 2014). Many of the American states had divorce legislation after gaining Independence from Great Britain, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... California was the first to adopt the law in 1969 and later on, other states (Iowa being the second) did too (The History of Divorce Law in the USA, 2014). Over the years, divorce has increased as the stigma against it has started to decrease since the 1800s. Divorce rates went from less than 3% to about 7% from the late 1800s to the late 1960s. Before 1867, divorce statistics were not recorded. While there was a large amount of dishonor attached to divorce in the 1800s, divorce still happened every once in a while. One of the influences on divorce statistics at the time was that women outside of marriage didn t have the same economic opportunities that men had. While divorce rates still weren t that high compared to later on, divorce began to slowly increase. Divorce rates during the 1900s were still low because you couldn t acquire a divorce without proving abuse, adultery, or abandonment. Divorce continued to rise at a steady pace, significantly increasing in the 1970s. This was because no fault divorce had just been made available and people could now file without the hassle of having to prove something had caused the marriage to fall ... Most forms of bladder cancer start in the superficial layer of the transitional epithelium, and most often affect the transitional cells. It may also be called transitional cell carcinoma or even urothelial carcinoma. Urothelial carcinoma is also a term used for transitional cell cancer in the renal pelvis, ureters, and urethra. Bladder cancer is a relatively common disease. Urine flow may be routed out of the body through a stoma, or a variety of surgeries have been developed to form artificial bladders from parts of the large or small intestine. In addition to surgery, radiation and chemotherapy may be used in the battle against bladder cancer. More than 70% of bladder cancer diagnoses are made when the cells affect only superficial layers of tissue. Of course, this is excellent news because the survival rate for cancers caught early is much better than for cancers caught in stage three or later. Even so, bladder cancer has an unusual habit of growing in several places at once, so although it may be possible to catch one or two tumors, any invisible third, fourth, and fifth tumors may not become symptomatic for another several months. This means that the reoccurrence rate for bladder cancer is surprisingly high; up to 80% percent of bladder cancer patients have at least one reoccurrence. The relation between bladder cancer and carcinogenic substances is one of the most clearly demonstrated links between environmental exposures and cancer. The good news is the bladder cancer is probably a completely preventable disease, if exposure to the carcinogenic substances is limited or eradicated. References Bladder Cancer. (2008). Section 260A(1)(a) permits a company to give financial assistance provided that the assistance does not materially prejudice either the company, its shareholders or the company s ability to pay its creditors (Ciro 2009). In the case of Hawthorn Blood Supplies Co Ltd, Roger convinces other directors to give him a $10 million loan. Roger uses his company to use some of the loan money to buy shares in Hawthorn Blood Supplies Co Ltd to boost its share price and then sell it. By giving Roger this loan Hawthorn Blood Supplies Co Ltd will subsequently reduce its capital and put shareholder s and creditors at risk. This would breach s260A1 (a). Section 260A(1)(b) permits a company to give financial assistance even if this would materially prejudice the interests of the company or its ability to pay its creditors, provided that the assistance is approved by shareholders pursuant to s260B. This procedure is very similar approval for selective capital reductions and selective share buy backs. In our case the board of directors has failed to get shareholders approval when they decided to lend Roger $10 million. There is clearly a breach of s260A(1)(b) and a possible breach of conflict of interests. Relevance of section 588G A director has a duty to prevent a company from trading whilst insolvent. Bees, like many other insects and even animals are quite protective of their territories and their honey. So you will most definitely need protective gear even if you are a seasoned beekeeper. A beekeeper hat is therefore one of the most important part of that gear. The moment you think of protection against the stings, the hat should be your first thought. The beekeeper hat as is with other protective clothing should be white in color. Bees don t consider the white color as a threat. • 12. Terracotta Etruscan Vase Analysis I saw a terracotta Etruscan vase at the Walters Museum, on November 4, 2015. Created by Micali Painter, it stands 16¾ high and has a circumference of 10¼, excavated between 500 490, BCE in Cerveteri, Italy. The museum provenance for the container states that it was purchased in 1902 by Henry Walters from the Don Marcello Massarenti Collection in Rome ( Black Walters). A close look at the vase reveals unclothed, energetically running satyrs. Above them, birds face in the opposite direction, closer to the neck of the vessel. Their use caused them to be indispensable, and their presence desired along with Greek imports. We can form an idea of the main differences between Greek and Etruscan vases. Greek images are used for their narrative qualities and symbolism; the erotic pleasures of mortal life and a prospect of eternal feasting in the afterlife. Etruscan paintings conveyed a clear sense of an exuberant enjoyment of life, with dancing couples and other human characters looking strong, healthy and filled with life. The art captured human emotion much better than the more stylized Greek art. During the 4th and 5th centuries BCE, Greek fleets began to plunder the coastal cities, the Gaul s overtook the Po Valley, and without unity among the citizens, the Etruscans were overwhelmed. Extensive sculpture and artwork were destroyed when around 396 BCE, Etruscans were overcome by the Romans and absorbed into the empire ( Etruscan Collins). The short time period when the culture survived independently, they created amphora that was magnificent in style, in my opinion, and vital in its use. The symmetry of the handles suggests the stability of the symmetrical piece. While gazing at the item, I realized that this ancient and delicate artifact is in remarkable condition. To imagine all of the individuals that utilized the amphora in some way, and its travels throughout its life during the last 2500 years, is a journey I will never fully ... • 13. Naturalism In Henry David Thoreau Henry David Thoreau lives by an ideology of minimalism and simplicity, conveniences of his era are gratuitous for a life of prosperity. He entered the woods to explore life living deliberately and to tread a road of existential self actualization. Thoreau is a transcendentalist so it is only expected that he does not align with centralized authority through religion and government which leads to the the overall theme of naturalism and self reliancy. Essentially the theme thoreau advocates is that a simplistic lifestyle allows one to live freely and wholly without the binds of tyranny and modern conveniences. Within Henry David Thoreau s passage, probably the most conspicuous example of Thoreau s theme of minimalism and transcendentalism is when he states, Our life is frittered away by detail. An honest man has hardly need to count more than his ten fingers, or in extreme cases he may add his ten toes, and lump the rest. Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! (Thoreau 6) Essentially Thoreau advocates an honest man has no need for even the slightest of complexity in life and that a suspended state of ignorance from what is deemed as extraneous details is bliss. In this quote the word honest is a strong piece of rhetoric that exclaims that honesty and morality is primarily attained through simplicity and not through gluttony in curiosity. This connects back to my theme that thoreau advocates that a man can live virtuously only with simplicity, hence, Shams and delusions are esteemed for soundest truths, while reality is fabulous. If men would steadily observe realities only, and not allow themselves to be deluded, life, therefore of delusions created by this superfluous reality is responsible for the many of the problems we have in modern society. Thoreau once again exclaims that complexities in life are extraneous when he states, Still we live meanly, like ants; though the fable tells us that we were long ago changed into men; like pygmies we fight with cranes; it is error upon error, and clout upon clout, and our best virtue has for its occasion a superfluous and evitable wretchedness. (Thoreau 6) like ants; though the fable tells us, our lives are comparable to the regimented lifestyle of ants ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Descartes s Meditations On First Philosophy We Think, Therefore We Are Throughout history man has always wanted to understand themselves, and to understand others. Humans have this innate wondering, this curiosity, as to what makes us who we are. What is it inside of us that allows us to exist? Sometimes the answer is as simple as looking inwards, or as René Descartes would call it, meditation. These meditations are moments of reflection, time spent with one s thoughts, and time to figure out where one is placed within the world. During one of these meditations, Descartes creates the phrase, cogito ergo sum , I think, therefore I am, in his monumental book, Principles of Philosophy, though it was written in another form earlier, ego sum, ego existo , I am, I exist, in his book Meditations on First Philosophy. This phrase, put so eloquently, means that because Descartes is able to think, because he is able to ponder his own existence, he therefore, exists. Descartes is correct in saying that his self exists because he can think, and ponder his existence. Descartes use of, cogito ergo sum addresses the issue of doubt in the world, and how to deal with our own existence because of this. We, as humans, have an underlying desire to understand reality, and to know what is, and what isn t. For example, dreams can be perceived as being reality, as they carry all the necessary attributes for living. Inside of a dream we walk, we can eat, we can have different sensations, though, once awake it is obvious that none ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Tourette s Syndrome Case Study DESCRIPTION Tourette s Syndrome, often shortened to TS, is an inherited neurological disorder. Although the cause is unknown, studies suggest that it occurs when the nerves in the brain have trouble communicating and when there is a disturbance in the balance of neurotransmitters. It is characterized by repetitive, sudden, and involuntary movements or noises called tics. The tics can be both motorized and vocalized. Motor tics are body movements that can be simple, such as rapid eye blinking, shoulder shrugging, or nose twitching or complex, such as jumping, kicking, hopping, and spinning. Simple vocal tics include grunting, sniffing, and throat clearing, while complex vocal tics include repeating the words of others or repeating one s own words (ghr.nlm.nih.gov). About 10% of those diagnosed with TS have coprolalia, usage of obscene language, and copropraxia, making obscene movements. I watched a documentary where the famous marine biologist, Jean Michel Cousteau, talks about the Great Barrier Reef and how temperature affects it. However, after the existing coral dies, new coral grows on top of it and the cycle starts again. Aside from this this, coral has been known to adapt to survive in waters where the temperature can get below 60 or rise above 90. So the coral population is in no real danger. Another point he makes is that Polar bears are getting scrawnier because the seal habitat has declined because global warming causes the ice to melt. This is false. • 20. The Types Of Bone Tissue Bone tissue is a connective tissue with an abundant matrix of intercellular substances that encloses widely separated cells. The bone matrix is made up of an inorganic component known as mineral salts that hardens the bone, and an inorganic component collagen fibres and an amorphous mixture called ground substance, which gives the bone its strength (Tortora, Grabowski 2001). There are three types of cells that can be found in the bone, they are osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes. Osteoblasts are the cells that synthesizes a specialized organic material called osteoid which is important in the build up of mineralized bone, osteoclasts are relatively larger multi nucleate cells made up of mitochondria and lysosomes that are responsible for the continuous erosion of bones. Lastly the last cells found in the bone are osteocytes, these are adult osteoblast cells found in the lacunae that have been surrounded by mineralized matrix. (Thibodeau, Patton 2003).Osteocytes are responsible for maintaining metabolism within the bone such as the exchange of nutrients with the blood. There are four types of bones short bones, long bones, flat bones and irregular bones, which have different characteristics so at to be able to function effectively. That quality is the inability to make good decisions. When faced with alarming or stressful situations, Eckels, Travis, and the townsfolk in the lottery, make bad decisions. The townsfolk blunder through their life, blindly following the unjust tradition to stone someone to death each year. Eckels and Travis are both cowards, and cowards tend to make bad decisions because they are selfish. Both stories are connected by these cowardly people that make bad decisions. The Industrial Revolution is one of the greatest and most impactful time in our nation s history that made all of these changes come to life and impacted not just the people who lived during the time, but even the life we re living today. The Industrial Revolution created many new types of industries, businesses, and products that changed the consumer culture of the time along with society as a whole. Searle utilizes a system s ability to pass the Turing test as a parameter in the study, though the person would still indeed not understand Chinese. Searle proceeds to refute the claims of strong AI one at a time, by positioning himself as the one who manipulates the Chinese symbols. The first claim is that a system, which can pass the Turing test, understands the input and output. Searle replies that as the computer in the Chinese room, he gains no understanding of Chinese by simply manipulating the symbols according to the formal program, in this case being the complex rules. • 32. Data, Information, And Knowledge And How They Are... Students Name: Marsil Hana 1. Describe the terms Data, Information, and Knowledge and how they are related to each other. Data: is a collection of facts and studies, it can be thought of as a description of the world. For example, when I say I have brown hair, hazel eyes and live in Chicago, those are all data. Information: information is much more refined data, because it evolved to the point where it can be useful and helpful to study a certain case or form of analysis. Knowledge: it is basically what we know, maybe insights and facts that we ve learned in our life, or some experience that we applied to data and information. In my opinion, they are related to each other because everything started from facts and our knowledge on specific topics and facts, and it all evolved to information and helpful data. 2. Describe 5 components of the database system and why they are important part of the system? 1 Data: it s very important because most companies and organizations generate, store and process large amounts of data. 2 Hardware: it s also an important component because we store our data in the storage devices like CD, DVD, floppy disk, and all the important parts like the processor and memory. 3 Software: it consists the DBMS that acts as a bridge between the user and DB. It also interacts with the user through application and programs. 4 People: users are the human beings that need the data and information to help them with their daily lives and work by interacting ... • 33. The Book Thief Literary Analysis I guess humans like to watch a little destruction. Sand castles, houses of cards, that s where they begin. Their great skill is their capacity to escalate (109) quotes Death, right before the bonfire of banned books is lit. The novel The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, is filled with pages of destruction and mortality. Although it is unclear what Death, the narrator really is, he is mostly portrayed as an immortal human who shares the same feelings as we do. During the reign of Nazi Germany, Death is occupied picking up souls of soldiers and Jews. To distract himself, Death describes the vivid colors he sees during one s death. He is troubled by the way humans destroy one another because in the end we all die. Death finds peace in telling the story of Liesel Meminger, an adopted girl who helps her family hide a Jew in their basement. Liesel steals books and understands the power of language at the time of Nazi propaganda. When Himmel street is bombed and Liesels life is changed forever, Death takes the autobiography that Liesel was editing. He then narrates the story of Liesel along with the events of both destruction and mortality taking place in the rest of the world. That s the sort of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Inner voices called out to me. Why him and not me? (389). The prisoners were forced to march from camp to camp, they were most likely killed if they stopped. The condition of the Jewish prisoners shows the awful cruelty of the Nazi soldiers. The prisoners are exhausted, starving, and many are near death, yet the Nazis show no sympathy whatsoever. While the rest of the community is watching, Hans feels compelled to do something. Therefore, Hans Hubermann, one of the onlookers, offers a small piece of bread to one of the old prisoner. Upon seeing this the soldier whips both Hans and the old man. The act and quote portray that many Jews wanted to die rather than be tortured for choosing their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Decision Struck Down A Statute In 1976, by a 7 2 decision, the Court adopted an intermediate level of review for gender classifications in the case Craig v. Boren. The decision struck down a statute that allowed women over the age of eighteen to purchase beer but only men over the age of twenty one. Using this intermediate scrutiny, the Court has invalidated gender segregation across the board. However, while this heightened level of scrutiny has drastically helped women, it has not been equal in its effect on men. Since Craig, the Court has upheld a requirement that only men register for the draft (Rostker v. Goldberg) and a statutory rape law where only adult men were punished for having sex with an underage individual of the opposite sex (Michael M. v. Superior Court). While these cases occurred in the 80s, this trend of favoring women over men in gender discrimination cases has continued, especially in regards to administrative law and protection. Recent Supreme Court cases reveal that men are still being unfavorably ruled against over women, leading one to believe a push for strict scrutiny is key in bridging that gap and implementing a federal statute that all States must obey in order to ensure gender equality is achieved on both sides of the spectrum. Beginning in the 70s, even before the decision of Craig, one is able to notice a trend of men seeming to fail where women have strived in court. A notable case is Frontiero v. Richardson which involved a lieutenant of the United States Air Force ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
